12 Best Hotels in Carcassonne

Sitting atop a rocky hill in the Occitanie region, Carcassonne looks like it has been lifted straight from the pages of a medieval fairy tale. With its double-walled fortifications, soaring turrets, and cobbled lanes, this UNESCO World Heritage site attracts millions of visitors each year. Yet while the Cité de Carcassonne is undeniably the main draw, the surrounding “Bastide Saint-Louis” (the lower town) offers a more local, laid-back atmosphere.

Choosing the right accommodation is crucial to unlocking the magic of this historic city. Whether you want to wake up to the sight of turrets from your bedroom window or prefer a quiet retreat near the Canal du Midi, the options are wonderfully diverse. From opulent five-star addresses within the ramparts to charming boutique guesthouses just outside the walls, there is a perfect base for every type of traveler.

Staying inside the medieval citadel offers an unforgettable, atmospheric experience, especially after the day-trippers have left and the streets grow quiet. However, staying in the lower town often provides better value, larger rooms, and easier access to restaurants frequented by locals. Both areas offer distinct advantages depending on your travel style, budget, and mobility needs.

For those driving, parking is a significant consideration, as vehicles are heavily restricted within the old city walls. Many of the best hotels offer shuttle services, private parking, or clear guidance on navigating the logistics of this pedestrian-heavy zone. We have evaluated these properties based on location, historical charm, modern amenities, and genuine guest feedback to help you decide.

Below is a curated list of the best places to stay, ranging from luxurious historic conversions to cozy, family-run establishments. Each property has been selected for its ability to provide a memorable, comfortable, and authentic stay in one of France’s most visited destinations.

We loved our stay at Ibis Carcassonne! It's beautifully decorated, well located ... blah blah ... blah ... but that's not why we loved it. We loved it because of the gorgeous staff ... in particular the Spanish receptionist. She was kind and attentive and helpful. She epitomizes what hospitality is all about! She tried to meet our every need ... reassured us that our precious bikes were safe in the locked storeroom, gave us a room overlooking the pool because we are Accord members, told us when to avoid the crowds at breakfast and helped me book a hairdresser's appointment. She smiled warmly everytime we saw her and made us feel at home. In New Zealand there is a Moari saying "Māku e kiwiatu, he tangata, he tangata, he tangata" which means ... What is the most important thing in the world? Well let me tell you, it is people, it is people, it is people. And what made Ibis Carcassonne memorable was the Spanish receptionist!

Stayed at this hotel in August 2025. We loved the themed decor. Our family room was amazing with an outside area where you could see the pool. Kids loved the bunk bed. We all loved the hotel cat she was definitely a celebrity around the hotel all of the guests loved her!
Janet Cary★★★★★
Great location for visiting La Cite - the medieval town of Carcassonne. Nice breakfast which a good selection, something for everyone including fresh squeezed OJ. Nice place for dinner, 3 choices for appetizers (entree in French), main course (plat), and dessert. Very friendly and helpful staff, will go the extra mile to help.
HatBoyHarvey★★★★★
Excellent friendly hotel with clean modern rooms. Good shower, good breakfast variety with eggs, no kettle in room, but free tea/coffee station in foyer. Comfortable beds
Robyn Allwright★★★★★
Nicely located about 15 minutes from the historic town in a nice residential neighbourhood. Our room overlooked the pool, but we had no noise. Would definitely stay here again!

Host are both very welcoming and friendly. Breakfast was amazing such a choice of eggs pastures cold meat and coffee delicious. Eating in their outside area was so stunning. Rooms were comfortable. Shower superb. Only negative is the towels are tiny. I’m not even that big they should have bigger towels. Overall would definitely come back here.
Stephen Kendrick★★★★★
We started by reading Labyrinth by Kate Moss, then flying to the local small airport. Arriving at the hotel from the book we greeted reception and spoke about the book. He told us to go up to our room drop off our cases in our room then climb the final section of the staircase. Amazing the castle was just above us and lit up. So much to explore and restaurants to try, just like living in medieval times - brilliant short break
Andrew Kalinovsky★★★★★
Great option. Simple but nice. Large rooms, some have view of the castle. Well maintained. Cute courtyard.
Sophie Doherty★★★★★
We were only spending one night in Carcassonne and so picked this hotel for its location and price point. We lucked out with the room because we got one on the top floor and overlooking the city ramparts. It is a good location for not being within the medieval city itself - though be warned - it is a 10-minute uphill walk. The room was modern and well maintained, and the bathroom was excellent. The owners are really lovely and were extremely helpful in accommodating our car and pointing out where to go!
Daniel Parsons★★★★★
The most beautiful hotel, with lovely staff (and hotel cat!) and in a fabulous location. I think I somehow lucked out because my room must have been the best in the hotel, on the top floor with a stunning view of fortified Carcassonne. Beautifully decorated room with excellent facilities, super comfy bed and brilliant shower. Anyone looking to stay somewhere in Carcassonne should come here! Would love to come back.

Nice service, they let us check in 20 minutes in advance. Very close to the old town/castle. Private parking, tasty breakfast, amazing swimming pool.

This is a great little 3 star hotel. The staff are very helpful ( apart from the older lady who just seemed angry the whole time but perhaps was just being “French” ). The rooms are basic but clean with comfortable beds. There is a pool and outdoor seating area and parking. The locations is great as it is just down the hill from the medieval city.
Big Rich★★★★★
Fantastic Customer Service (Great help with translations from English to French and Vice Versa) Awesome location Good breakfast choices

Nice, clean and modern hotel almost at the foot of the old city. Has pool. We were able to lock our bikes in the garage. Typical breakfast with fresh fruit. I passed by one room with bunks. Nice *** all around.
Natalia Dorofeeva★★★★★
Perfect location , free parking on the territory, clean , comfortable beds and pillows , good breakfast for 13 euros. I haven’t used the pool , but it’s nice they have it.

What a fantastic little hotel, right on the doorstep of historic Carcassonne, so perfect for exploring on foot. The hotel is very clean, with lovely light airy spacious rooms and a wonderful small pool with relaxation area and bar, plus a secure parking area. The hotel staff were extremely helpful, going out of their way to make us feel welcome, and the breakfast is delicious. Hugo and Wally went above and beyond, recommending and booking a lovely restaurant for us and really looking after us. We have stayed twice now and wouldn't hesitate staying again, thank you!
Lee Sides★★★★★
A huge thanks to the team here, they looked after us every day & went out of their way for us. Room was immaculate every time we returned also. Travelling with a 2yr old can be demanding at times but they were great. Super breakfast also. Merci beaucoup!
Yasmin Jacobsen★★★★★
Great location. Rooms are lovely, staff are friendly. The breakfast is served to you eith a selection bread basket, egg, cheese and a slice of ham, yoghurt and either tea or coffee.
Sean Garland★★★★★
Lovely friendly staff, comfy beds and amazingly quiet. Great location for exploring the medieval city. There is a swimming pool and you can get a massage. We only stayed one night because our AirBnB was terrible but we would come back again.
Julia Liang★★★★☆
Great location - few minutes walk into the old town and outside of the Carcassonne castle. Friendly staff, small but clean rooms. No elevator was a bit challenge for old family members. The wine selection in the bar were limited and there were so so, so it might be better to go to the town to get wine if you want a drink.

John Beckwith★★★★★
Happy to find this hotel at a reasonable rate. The receptionist people (evening and morning) were very pleasant and responsive. The fellow in the evening spoke Spanish as a second language so that was our language of communication. The woman in the morning made me comfortable with my French, which I appreciated. They both knew enough English if that would be your only language. The room was modest, but very clean with a spotless bathroom. The beds were oddly saggy (I think because of an inadequate or nonexistent box spring), but firm and we slept well. Very quiet place, perfect for sleeping. The morning coffee was good, but we are not fans of the typical French (and Spanish/Andorra) breakfast buffet so we skipped it.
Jacques★★★★★
Very good quality/price hotel. We slept very well and the room had everything we need. It was great to have a small terrace and access to the garden for our dog. And having a free parking was great.
Richard Wagstaff★★★★★
Standard tourist hotel. It is the staff that made our stay excellent - very helpful and friendly. Breakfast was excellent with lots of choice and locally produced jams. The hotel is about 1.5 km from the castle and about 2.5 km from the city centre. For those with electric vehicles, there is a fast public EV charger less than 1 km from the hotel on an adjacent BMW forecourt. Would certainly recommend this hotel for friends and family looking for a stay in Carcassonne.
Robert Gray★★★★☆
A great hotel for a short stay to visit Carcassonne (france) It is a 3star hotel with 5 star Manager and staff evening meals were good Its only drawback is its light industrial location. But would definitely recommend for1/2 days.
SB★★☆☆☆
Well this is more like a 'motel' than a hotel. Something akin to an American movie hotel. The bedroom was somewhat basic and the bathroom even more so, both in urgent need of an update. Aside from the cockroach in the reception area at the start of the stay no other insects were seen. Be prepared at breakfast to be zealously watched over by a member of staff which is somewhat off putting when all you want a quiet meal first thing in the morning. Otherwise if you are a good walker you can walk to the the medieval castle walls within 40 minutes. Other than fast food outlets there are no 'real' restaurants nearby to eat at in the evening. 50/50 rating for the staff, seems they ether are in customer service mode when they feel like it or simply unhelpfully. Pleasant when in full swing, brisk when not. Best of luck....

Excellent overall. The service was particularly noteworthy. The proprietor was very attentive, polite, and helpful. He reminded me of a fine Swiss hotelier, very old school in the best possible way. I would not hesitate to stay here again.
Eva Gladek★★★★☆
This charming hotel really feels like a time capsule. Both the exterior and interior are in line with the 19th century style. The owner is very friendly and made a point of keeping the reception open past closing time so we could check in late. Facilities are a bit dated, but work. The air conditioning took a while to cool down the room. Location is great - short walk to the city center, 20 minute walk to the medieval fortress. Free parking on site. We were also allowed to leave our car after checking out to go explore.
Oliver Robinson★★★★★
Quiet, friendly, charming, traditional small French hotel. Within walking distance of the train station and well placed for the town and the old fortified area.
Virginia Day★★★★☆
Lovely hosts only too happy to make your stay as comfortable as possible. Very clean and our room was very quiet. Good continental breakfast. Private parking. Only negatives were no English TV except BBC News and very limited restaurants within walking distance. Aim to return at end of our holiday.
william jamieson★★★★★
Nice rooms and old fashioned ambience. We had a suite of 2 rooms with a shower room in between and one en suite. The patron is kind. Not far from the main square of the new town. There is a tram to the old town. Check out the terrific couscous at Comptoir Ludique about 10 minutes walk away.

Absolutely Fabulous place. Very well refurbished building with all its character and charm retained.Rooms were fantastic, spacious and very comfortable.Excellent host(Rachael) who went above and beyond and the breakfast and choice was 2nd to none. location to everything was perfect. Could not recommend enough.
Jeroen Scholten★★★★★
We have just returned from a one week stay at this beautiful Townhouse. The house is a characteristic southern French building that the owners have restored with great respect. The Townhouse is perfectly located right between the new and old town, meaning you can walk to either the old or new town within a few minutes. We stayed in the heritage suite and this is a large loft consisting of bedroom with a French balcony (large enough to stand on but not to sit on), living room and a bathroom. From the balcony we had a wonderful view of the old town. We loved that we got new towels every day, thank you for that, and the bed was also made nicely. The hostess is wonderful. She makes a different, delicious breakfast every day and is always very interested in what you're planning to do or have done the day in advance. She also has excellent tips on what to do and/or see in Carcassonne and the surrounding area. We also received very good tips from the hostess about restaurants in Carcassonne and these tips were great, we enjoyed this restaurant very much. It was also very nice to hear that the hostess had been on holiday near our home in the Netherlands a month ago (1200 kilometers away but it is a small world after all 🙂 ) The room has no air conditioning but has 2 large fans. We had very hot weather the first few days (up to 41 degrees centigrade) so we needed these fans but it still was very warm for my girlfriend to sleep the first nights even though the bed was very good. Luckly after a few days he became better for her :). We can recommend this townhouse to everybody for visiting Carcassonne as well as the surrounding area of Carcassonne.
Louise Kidd★★★★★
A gorgeous place to stay between the citadel and the town - easy walk to both. Rachel is a perfect host, her breakfasts were so good and the house is stunning. Beautifully set up and very relaxing. Plenty of local knowledge and recommendations too. Highly recommend.
Gordon hayes★★★★★
Very happy with the choice to stay at the Carcassonne townhouse. It is perfectly located between the Cite and the newer town, with views of the river from the room. Ratchel and mark were great hosts, and recommend places to eat and visit. The breakfast was a delight, different each morning, but always with fresh located produce. In all a fantastic townhouse, in a wonderful location.

If you need decent accommodation and the best value for your money look no further, this is it. 15 min walk to city center and old castle. Private parking, good breakfast and clean rooms. Also pretty quiet. Best of all is the service in the hotel that is very friendly and helpful. Very recommendable!!

This is a great budget hotel with absolutely zero frills. It’s perfectly fine for an overnight stay but not ideal if you want to be closer to the historic centre on foot or if you’re used to having a bit more space in your hotel room or a hotel lounge/bar area. Breakfast was really good, the staff were helpful and polite and I enjoyed my time there.
Christopher Percy★★★★★
Does what it says on the tin. Staff are fantastic. Breakfast OK but no hot food ( continental) basic and clean but not really many amenities in close proximity

First, the shower was clogged. So the bathroom has been quickly flooded. Then, the AC was noisy. But the worst, one of the towel smells weird. A really peculiar smell that I well know. The towel smells cat's pee!! I have a pretty good nose, I'm sure that's it! What's the heck ? At the end, in the morning, the coffee machine had a bug and I lost several minutes to ask a decent coffee to the receptionist.
Aloka Malala Kawyaswara★★★★☆
Nice place! Free parking and only five minutes away from the fort by car. The service was chill, and the breakfast was quiet and amazing. The room was nice, with a beautiful bathroom. I booked a room for three people, but the bunk bed wasn’t arranged,my brother set it up himself before sleeping. I had a great time at the hotel! At night, we heard some footsteps in the corridor, maybe other guests walking around, but the hotel could use some soundproof walls. 🙂‍↕️ Still, I was exhausted after visiting the Carcassonne fort, so I fell asleep easily. Overall, I had a really good time there! 👍🏽🔥🔥💯

Close to the Medieval city, about a 15/20 min walk, secure parking, breakfast was good, has a pool. Staff and communication were excellent, late checkout was only 9 Euros. Room was tired, looks like an old residential building complex rather than a hotel, not as good as the pictures unfortunately.

A pleasant place to stay in Carcassonne, ideally located in the city center. The staff are very friendly and the housekeeping is impeccable. The hotel residence has a lovely swimming pool open daily. An excellent choice for a stay in this magnificent city of Carcassonne.

The photos are much nicer than the reality. Rooms needs and upgrade and the same goes for the pool area. Upside is the short walk to the medieval city.

We enjoyed our stay here. It was very reasonable I think for off season. The apartment was lovely. We enjoyed visiting the area. The staff was very accommodating and helpful. We enjoyed having a chance to play in the pool with the family.

The Hotel is located on a beautiful location nearby the medieval city. The service at the front desk is very professional and quick. The breakfast is good, everything you need is present. The Hostess at the breakfast room who worked in the hotel for 28 years is perfection. She welcomes you as you are a guest in her own house. Eye for details and also quick service is her second name. The dinner was for our experience not that good , but with a good conversation with the manager we came to a perfect solution. Housekeeping is friendly and cooperative and they do a marvelous job. The room smells clean and fresh. The only thing we missed is service at the poolside. It would be nice if a waiter from the restaurant comes by to serve some drinks. But our experience is a 10 out of 10 Looking forward to visit again soon.
Yan★★★★★
Although we only booked one night, we had an incredibly pleasant stay at this hotel. The staff was exceptionally friendly and accommodating, making us feel right at home throughout our visit. It was also a genuine pet-friendly establishment, which added to our overall enjoyment. The efficient air conditioning system was a lifesaver during the scorching heat wave, ensuring our comfort. We would happily return and highly recommend this hotel to anyone seeking a delightful staycation near the medieval city.
Debbie Walker★★★★★
We stayed in Carcassone on a 2 week road trip with our dog. Many hotels claim to be pet friendly, but aren't very welcoming or don't allow dogs in many areas in the hotel. But at the Mercure, our dog was welcomed warmly - and she could be with us pretty much wherever we were. Staff were amazing with her, and we all had a wonderful stay. We would definitely stay here again if we're ever back in the region!
Emily Hahnel★★★★★
This room is so cozy & clean, the view from my room is serene, & there's even a little cubby for my travel blanket. The staff has been so helpful & accommodating. I would definitely like to come back to enjoy a longer stay here.

Basically the perfect hotel for visiting the cité. The entrance to the cité is just a minute away with a nice and secure parking space next to the hotel (even larger vehicles will fit). The self check in and parking is super easy, very convenient. The rooms are nice and clean and there's wifi. 100% recommendable.
David Fenech★★★★☆
This boutique accommodation is uniquely positioned just a stone’s throw away from the castle of Carcassonne with unhindered excellent views of it. It also offers ample parking adjacent to the accommodation and it is really amazingly convenient. The rooms have all the necessities but to be fair they are very sparsely furnished and the shower / toilet arrangement is what it is. Nevertheless its location makes up for this in droves and I would return there without thinking if I am visiting again
Elnellin Evendim★★★★★
Superb Location with Breathtaking Carcassonne Views! This hotel boasts an absolutely perfect location, offering incredible views of the medieval town of Carcassonne. We booked a room with a terrace, and the castle view from our balcony, and even from our bed, was simply amazing. You couldn't ask for a better vantage point to explore the Cité Médiévale! There are also benches outside, perfect for sipping a glass of wine while enjoying the scenery. Getting into the hotel is a breeze: there's no staff on site, and you pick up the keys from a secure lockbox at the entrance using a code sent via email before your arrival. The entrance to Carcassonne is just a two-minute walk away, and you'll find plenty of restaurants inside the medieval town for dining before or after your castle visit. While the hotel doesn't offer breakfast, there's an excellent spot directly across the street with an outdoor terrace that's ideal for meals. This is the perfect place for a romantic getaway with a historical touch! While the complimentary coffee, water, and tea facilities in the common area are appreciated, their location isn't ideal for early risers. For ultimate comfort and convenience, especially for those who need their morning caffeine fix without leaving their room, in-room amenities would truly elevate the experience.
lydia nadine★★★★☆
Great location. Simple comfy room and the shower was good. Room serviced everyday and they left you a little chocolate and coffee capsules. Coffee machine is outside the room but a kettle is in your room. The car park location is brilliant and is in a secure location.

The only thing to say and more is that this place is 1st Class.. Everything is Spotless.. 3 nights in a Lovely big suite room we stayed in. Andrew & Karen always went more than beyond.. Lovely quiet location outside the city.. Which made all the more. Sitting outside in the garden and a very lovely lounge area which is always accessable to guests. Tips for Choosing the Perfect Hotel in Carcassonne

Selecting the right hotel requires balancing your desire for historical immersion with practical logistics. The layout of Carcassonne is unique, and understanding the differences between the medieval city and the lower town can save you time, money, and unnecessary stress during your trip. Here are some essential considerations to keep in mind before booking your stay.

Decide Between the Cité and the Bastide
The medieval Cité offers unbeatable atmosphere and proximity to the main attractions, but it comes with higher prices and tourist crowds. The lower town (Bastide Saint-Louis) is more authentic for daily life, features better dining value, and is just a 15 to 20-minute walk or a short shuttle ride from the ramparts.

Verify Parking and Accessibility
If you are arriving by car, confirm the hotel’s parking situation before you book. Many hotels inside the walls cannot accommodate vehicles directly at the door, requiring you to use a paid lot outside the gates. Some properties offer valet services or golf cart transfers for luggage, which is a major advantage on cobblestone streets.

Consider the Season
Carcassonne is a year-round destination, but the summer months can be extremely hot and crowded. If visiting in July or August, prioritize hotels with air conditioning, outdoor pools, or garden spaces. For a quieter experience with mild weather, consider the shoulder seasons of April to June or September to October.

Look for Soundproofing
The old buildings within the ramparts are beautiful but often feature thick stone walls and original windows that do not block noise well. If you are a light sleeper, read recent reviews specifically mentioning street noise or thin walls. A hotel in the lower town might offer a more peaceful night’s sleep.

Check for Elevator Access
Many historic boutique hotels in Carcassonne are housed in buildings that predate modern elevators. If you have heavy luggage or mobility restrictions, ensure the property has a lift or request a ground-floor room well in advance.

Prioritize a View if It Matters to You
Not all rooms within the Cité offer views of the ramparts or the countryside. If waking up to a postcard-worthy scene is a priority, explicitly book a "view room" or a suite facing the walls. Otherwise, you may end up looking at an interior courtyard, which can be lovely but less dramatic.

Finding the right place to stay transforms a simple visit into a deeply immersive historical journey. Whether you choose to sleep within the ancient stone walls or watch the sunset illuminate the turrets from a distance across the river, Carcassonne offers an accommodation experience unlike any other in France. Take your time reviewing the options, consider what matters most to your travel style, and prepare to step back in time.
