15 Best Cafes in Tours

Tours may not have the immediate name recognition of Paris or Lyon, but for those who appreciate the slower rhythms of the Loire Valley, it is a quiet powerhouse of gastronomy and craft. Nestled between the Cher and Loire rivers, this university city carries a distinct energy—equal parts medieval history and modern student life. It is this blend that has given rise to a coffee culture that feels both authentically French and refreshingly global.

The café scene here is not about rushing. It is about lingering over a hand-poured filter while watching the morning light hit the timber-framed facades of Place Plumereau. It is about the ritual of a perfectly pulled espresso before wandering through the bustling Les Halles market. In Tours, coffee is less of a caffeine delivery system and more of a social contract—an invitation to sit down, slow down, and taste the city.

Over the last decade, a new wave of artisans has transformed the city’s relationship with the bean. While traditional brasseries still serve their reliable noir alongside a croissant, a younger generation of roasters and baristas has introduced specialty-grade sourcing, oat milk, and minimalist Scandinavian aesthetics to the cobblestone streets. The result is a diverse landscape where a velvet-cushioned historic salon sits just a block away from a stark white third-wave espresso bar.

For the traveler, this variety is a gift. You can start your morning with a single-origin V60 in a sunlit courtyard, break for a creamy café crème at a zinc-topped bar, and end the afternoon with a cold brew in a hidden garden. The geography of Tours is compact, making it entirely possible to hop between several distinct coffee experiences in a single afternoon without ever hailing a cab.

Of course, not all cups are created equal. Some spots excel in roasting their own beans, filling the narrow lanes with the scent of caramelizing sugars. Others focus on the atmosphere, offering plush seating and quiet corners perfect for reading or writing. The best cafés in Tours, however, manage to marry both—serving exceptional coffee in spaces that make you want to stay far longer than you planned.

Whether you are a digital nomad hunting for reliable Wi-Fi, a pastry enthusiast seeking the perfect pairing, or simply a thirsty pedestrian looking for a moment of rest, Tours has a seat for you. We have sipped our way through the city’s historic center and its quieter residential fringes to bring you a curated list of the places that truly define the local scene. Here are the best spots to get your caffeine fix in the capital of Touraine.

After a 2 week road trip from Portsmouth, UK to Provence and back again, this was one of our favourite coffees. An actual flat white, from a barista machine, made with proper coffee beans. Impressive latte art skills too. I’d also give 5 stars for the sense of humour - felt like a home from home.
Diana A★★★★☆
The oat cappuccino was very good and reminded me of Australia. The only thing missing was a sprinkle of chocolate powder but after months of mediocre coffee I was transported and very very happy! Unfortunately hot chocolate was less good. It is still miles better than chocomel or ovaltine in Swiss (who calls that travesty a hot chocolate???) so it is only a small gripe. It was a bit weak on chocolate flavour but still creamy. Maybe the recipe needs to be revised? On a personal note I really liked how warm and kind the server was. The atmosphere in the cafe is very conducive to being relaxed. Will return when I’m next in Tours.
Michael K.★★★★★
Great coffee place in the heart of Tours! Get your Flat White with Latte Art at this Specialty Coffee Place. Unfortunately they didn’t have a real breakfast, but the cake and other baked goods were a nice alternative.
Michel Walter★★★★★
Hello, I left my wallet in your shop on Saturday. I am really worried about it. I am in Paris on a flight back to the US. I came back but your shop was closed. Please let me know if you have it and I can arrange for someone to pick it out. I have called many times and no answer and I have left messages. Michel

Wonderful service and honestly the best coffee in the region. Fantastic cakes and meals, too! Truly if you want great coffee you must come here.

We looked for a breakfast spot because our hotel breakfast was not good. We had to wait until they opened at 10am, but it was very worth it. All of the food was amazing. The pancakes were light crisp and decedent. The eggs were perfect eggs and the bacon was candied a little bit and superb. Highly recommend! Also it was very nice getting to see the people who work there make each other laugh.
Robert Kwok★★★★★
Came here a few times for coffees during my short stay in Tours. Had a few variations of their coffee: batch brew, long black, and flat white. They were all great and my personal preference was flat white in a small cup (which had less amount of milk than their standard version). The latte art of milk based drinks is always a welcome bonus, not just a pleasure to look at, it demonstrates the frothing technique and more importantly their passion in making coffees. They also have beautifully presented cakes and cookies (although I didn’t try any).
Karsten Lang Pedersen★★★★★
Everything on the menu is home made and very delicious. The coffee pulled to perfection from a light roast bean. An airconditioned section with games and activities is available in the back of the cafe.

Lovely café steps from Gare de Tours. We came once for coffees and snacks, loved the vibe and friendly staff and returned another day for delicious breakfast. Will definitely return.
Tiffany Alexander★★★★★
Lovely place, The Eggs, Bacon, & Pancakes were delicious, it came with a slight drizzle of real tasting maple syrup! My husband loved the the Ham, Zucchini, over toast. Both were very filling and delicious! They also have an English menu and speak English well! Mochaccino was delicious and beautiful ❤️

ROOOAAARR, an awesome café! It's a must for everyone who is into dinosaurs. If you are not into dinosaurs (why???), then it's also a great place to have a coffee or cake. My dogosaurus Mara has been well served as well.
lydwinia eathelyn★★★★★
Loved my hojocha latte. The vibe here is comforting and creative 🥰
Elodie Bishop★★★★★
Lovely dinosaur-themed cafe, with a lot of activities and art. There were gluten free cookies, and the drinks are tasty, and you can swap cow milk for a plant-based alternative free of charge !
Nastasiy’a★★★☆☆
This space is fully occupated by young people with laptops - they decided that here is their ‘office’?! One americano and work all day long? And customers who come for coffee and food should have their drinks take-away. Something is wrong guys, no? In the small places respecting their customers you’ll find ‘no laptops please’. Wish you also respect those who come for coffee, not for work in your spot

Good, slightly more creative than usual sandwiches served with salad. Sort of air conditioned inside, much appreciated during the canicule. Very good coffee (Italian style, no drip). Friendly service.

The best breakfast formula I have ever had in France. The attention to detail is spectacular. I’m definitely coming back here!

Really nice coffee. One of the best I've had in France. We had espresso. Only 2€, and wasn't the typical French dish water! The choux buns were nice too

Some of the best coffee I’ve ever had, the blend is just the right balance of fruity and smooth. The cheese cake I had with it was also very tasty , not too sweet and creamy. The owner was nice enough to put up with my terrible panicked French and the overall atmosphere of being on the quieter end of the old city make it a wonderful little spot to have a break and enjoy the word go by.
Bálint Dercsényi★★★★★
The coffee was lovely, the barista spoke good English, and the prices were very fair. €3.50 for a latte, and they didn't charge for alternative milks. Some seating available outside.
Cleo H★★★★★
Stopped for V60 and Granola after a run. The Coffee was very good (very happy that they served V60), the granola was also very tasty. You can also buy the beans and enjoy the coffee at home.

We came for the Saturday brunch and had iced tonka lattes, the French toast of the day (maple!), the eggs Benedict, and potatoes. Super yummy!
John★★★★★
We stopped here for lunch and were lucky to get a place. I had Eggs Benedict which was served with a nice salad - the eggs were perfectly cooked with a nice runny yolk. I had tap water to drink. I had a vanilla mousse with caramel and pecan followed by a good long coffee. 46€ for two is good value. I would eat here again.
Jake Norman★★★★★
Cool spot for brunch. Very tasty food. Grab a table whilst you can, queues outside the door

Just dashed in to grab a coffee and was instantly tempted by the option of cannoli to go with it... My husband and I had one each and they were absolutely delicious! Assembled fresh and with love. Came here twice during my stay. Had a americano which was great but the flat white tasted weak (it might only had one shot in it although didn’t confirm as the barista was busy).

Andreea Pasculescu★★★★★

Levin Schrey★☆☆☆☆
that was for real, the worst coffee i’ve ever had in my entire life! too hot, messed up the order and just disgusting in taste. please don’t go there!
Gail Horak★★★★★
This lovely coffee shop hits the mark for those looking for a perfectly prepared espresso or fancy pour over that you’d find in big metropolitan cities. I visited on successive days during a recent trip. The barista is welcoming to visitors and regulars alike and expertly prepares espresso drinks on a La Marzocco machine. The oat milk (lait d’avoine) doesn’t taste like the barista blend that you find in the U.S. but the espresso still sings through. This would be my daily stop if I lived in Tours!

Best value breakfast we've had in weeks traveling across France! $14.50 for a hot or cold drink, croque monsieur and a pastry. Everything is so good. We're really picky... intentionally visit high rated places....this place is legit. Very little English but wasn't a problem.
Lala Gaborz★★★☆☆
I have always supported this coffee shop from the beginning. I also love their mission and purpose. But recently, the service has been less than stellar. A handful of times now, no exaggerating you walk in and no one greets or serves you for minutes. Yesterday I walked in w 5 people around the counter working on one salad. No one looked up to say hello. I said hello. I stood at the register for several minutes. Just there in plain sight and no one came. I was about to walk out. I’m rethinking about going elsewhere. I feel like the managers are always angry. The rest of the staff are joyful and always helping. The managers look miserable . I hope management sees this and does something about it. Thanks.
Jöran Schakenraad★★★★★
Lovely cafe with great coffee. Benta and her team are superfriendly and professional, I would recommend this place.

The espresso was okay and not great. The chocolate “lava” cake (cœur coulant) looked like a 5 but tasted like a 3 star dessert. The decor inside and mid of seating styles makes this place attractive to gather. The exterior had nice seating as well. In nice weather it makes for a great people-watching spot!
Sabbalonn★★☆☆☆
Eclair au chocolate was dry and creme pâtisserie was dry. Flat white over roasted and bitter. Barquette aux fruits rouge not bad tasted fresh. Mum very happy with cholcoate chaud
Kimka Duk★★★★☆
The staff were exceptionally welcoming and attentive. The quality and flavor of the dishes I chose — the quiche Lorraine and the chausson aux pommes — were absolutely delightful and perfectly suited to my taste. Unfortunately, the éclair was somewhat underwhelming and lacked the refinement I was expecting from a French pastry. Overall, this became my favorite place in town during my short stay 🙂

Great coffe and food options. The tables outside in a sunny day are very nice

For a drink in the sun, on the terrace. French style in terms of service, speedy, snotty, efficient. The way it should be. Don't expect an American service, that's not why you're here, enjoy an authentic place and the medieval views.

Tips for Enjoying the Café Culture in Tours

Understanding the local rhythm will drastically improve your experience when exploring the coffee shops of Tours. The city operates on a schedule that balances tourist curiosity with the genuine pace of local life. To help you blend in and make the most of your caffeine-fueled explorations, consider the following practical advice curated from years of observing and participating in the Loire Valley coffee scene.

  1. Know the difference between "un café" and "un café allongé." If you simply order "un café" in a traditional French establishment, you will receive a short, intense shot of espresso. If you are expecting an American-style black coffee, you need to ask for a "café allongé" or visit a specialty shop that offers batch brew or V60 pour-overs.
  2. Sitting down costs more than standing up. In many traditional brasseries and cafés, there are two prices: one for the counter (au comptoir) and one for the terrace or table (en salle). If you are on a budget but still want the atmosphere, consider standing at the bar like a local. The price difference is usually small but notable.
  3. Embrace the "pause déjeuner" lull. Many independent specialty cafés in Tours close for a brief period in the early afternoon or shift their menu focus. If you are planning a late lunch coffee at 3:00 PM, check the hours online first. The city often quiets down between 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM before the after-work rush begins.
  4. Don’t skip the pastry pairing. In Tours, coffee is rarely drunk in isolation. The region is known for its delicate pastries and baked goods. Look for local specialties like the "biscuit de Touraine" or a simple, high-quality croissant au beurre. A good café will source these from a local artisan baker, elevating the entire experience.
  5. Bring cash for the small spots. While most modern specialty cafés accept credit cards and contactless payment, some of the older, family-run establishments or tiny kiosks in Les Halles may have a minimum card spend. Carrying a few euros in coins ensures you won’t miss out on a classic espresso at a historic counter.

The beauty of exploring Tours through its cafés is that the city is perfectly sized for walking. The distance between a historic roastery and a modern minimalist bar is often just a five-minute stroll along a pedestrianized lane. As you move from the bustling tourist hub of the Old Town toward the quieter neighborhoods near the Loire River, you will notice a shift in atmosphere. The music gets softer, the Wi-Fi gets stronger, and the locals become more prevalent.
