Tours may be known as the gateway to the Loire Valley’s grand châteaux, but the city itself holds a secret that locals love to keep close: its elevated social scene. Between the medieval half-timbered houses and the elegant limestone facades of Rue Nationale, a vibrant culture of rooftop dining and drinking has quietly taken root.
For a city that prides itself on the art de vivre, there is no better way to appreciate the skyline of slate roofs and church spires than from above. Whether you are looking for a sun-drenched lunch spot or a moody terrace for evening cocktails, Tours offers a surprising variety of high-altitude escapes.
The challenge for visitors is knowing which rooftops are worth the climb and which are simply tourist traps with a view. Quality varies dramatically, from gourmet kitchens helmed by ambitious chefs to simple bars that rely solely on their vantage point to draw a crowd.
As a visitor, you want more than just a nice photo; you want attentive service, a well-curated menu, and an atmosphere that captures the relaxed sophistication of the Loire Valley. The best rooftop venues in Tours blend panoramic views with genuine hospitality and culinary credibility.
This guide cuts through the noise to bring you the definitive list of elevated terraces that deliver on both scenery and substance. We have considered the quality of the drinks, the creativity of the food, and the overall ambiance to help you choose the perfect perch.
Whether you are planning a romantic date, a casual catch-up with friends, or a solo afternoon of people-watching, these elevated spots offer a fresh perspective on the city. Here are the standout rooftops that define the skyline of Tours.

Such a lovely rooftop terrace with a stunning view of cathedral on one side and the town on the other
Drinks were gorgeous and refreshing, would come again xx

With a view like this, the place is bound to be busy. I was lucky to get a table without reservation on a Wednesday evening and ended up waiting for ages to place the order, then waiting for my drink and food. Still worth it though. The staff are friendly.

Very expensive drinks, the views are nice - not amazing.

Great place to have lunch and a drink with family or friends. Quite a few options to choose from, quick and friendly service, lots of different table sizes and seating areas. One thing that would make it even better: a few more vegetarian options for the main dishes. Other than that, fully recommended.

I only discovered this food court going to the rooftop bar I kept hearing about. Food is on the higher end but really totally worth it. I saw an amazing looking pizza, talked to the lady preparing burgers with so much passion and got convinced to eat Lobster at the Chien Fou… my husband took the onglet. Both dishes were delicious and eating on the terrace with the view on the cathedral was a real treat!

I really really wanted to like this place because it's close to my house and the concept is cool. Unfortunately, the food is hit and miss. One time, I had the pizza and it was good. Another time, the asian food was also fairly good. However, the last time I went, a friend ordered a croque monsieur and it was awful: just a tiny slice of ham and cheese between two slices of toast. No béchamel, no flavor, and the side greens didn't even have a vinaigrette! My food wasn't much better: 3 hummus-type sauces, of which only 2 were somewhat edible, and a side of cold potatoes that were supposed to be hot. A total waste of time and money.

The place is really nice.
Ideal for having a drink with friends or family and eating whatever you want (everyone can sit wherever they like and order from any stall). There's something for everyone 👌

## A Unique Culinary Experience at La Belle Vue! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
What a delightful surprise to discover this new concept at **Cap Saint Jacques**! Already well-known and appreciated at the Tours Market Hall, they've succeeded here with an innovative and bold venture.
### **The Concept: A Village of Flavors**
The location is superb: **clean, bathed in light, and very welcoming**. What makes the experience unique is the organization of the space: **each specialty has its own dedicated stand**. Whether you're craving pizza, tacos, or Asian cuisine, each vendor has its own counter where you can watch the dishes being prepared live.
The system is incredibly smooth: you can sit freely at large communal tables and order either via a **QR code** or directly from the vendors at their respective stands.
### **On the Plate**
There's plenty of variety, but quality remains the priority. We were won over:
* **The Mi Xao:** A pure delight. The fried noodles have a perfect texture, the beef is incredibly tender, the shrimp are fresh, and the vegetables are nice and crisp.
* **The Cookies:** Don't leave without trying them! They're very original, with a special mention for the **pandan** cookie, which is a real discovery.
### **The Service:** The team reflects the atmosphere of the place: **friendly, smiling, and incredibly efficient**. Despite the separate station concept, the organization is perfect: we were served in less than ten minutes.
**In summary:** A modern spot that offers a variety of options without compromising on freshness. A success that confirms its solid reputation!

After a 2 week road trip from Portsmouth, UK to Provence and back again, this was one of our favourite coffees. An actual flat white, from a barista machine, made with proper coffee beans. Impressive latte art skills too. I’d also give 5 stars for the sense of humour - felt like a home from home.
Diana A★★★★☆
The oat cappuccino was very good and reminded me of Australia. The only thing missing was a sprinkle of chocolate powder but after months of mediocre coffee I was transported and very very happy!
Unfortunately hot chocolate was less good. It is still miles better than chocomel or ovaltine in Swiss (who calls that travesty a hot chocolate???) so it is only a small gripe. It was a bit weak on chocolate flavour but still creamy. Maybe the recipe needs to be revised?
On a personal note I really liked how warm and kind the server was. The atmosphere in the cafe is very conducive to being relaxed. Will return when I’m next in Tours.

Great coffee place in the heart of Tours! Get your Flat White with Latte Art at this Specialty Coffee Place.
Unfortunately they didn’t have a real breakfast, but the cake and other baked goods were a nice alternative.

Hello,
I left my wallet in your shop on Saturday. I am really worried about it. I am in Paris on a flight back to the US. I came back but your shop was closed. Please let me know if you have it and I can arrange for someone to pick it out. I have called many times and no answer and I have left messages.

We came for a Sunday brunch for the service at 13:30. There was a wide variety of delicious food, both sweet and savory. If you can choose, try to be seated in the garden. Worth the money.

Beware asking questions about how the breakfast works or if you can have a table and grab a snack, you’ll end up with a condescending response, because of course clients should know everything by heart when they enter the door 🙂

Some of the best coffee I’ve ever had, the blend is just the right balance of fruity and smooth. The cheese cake I had with it was also very tasty , not too sweet and creamy. The owner was nice enough to put up with my terrible panicked French and the overall atmosphere of being on the quieter end of the old city make it a wonderful little spot to have a break and enjoy the word go by.
Bálint Dercsényi★★★★★
The coffee was lovely, the barista spoke good English, and the prices were very fair. €3.50 for a latte, and they didn't charge for alternative milks. Some seating available outside.

The espresso was okay and not great. The chocolate “lava” cake (cœur coulant) looked like a 5 but tasted like a 3 star dessert. The decor inside and mid of seating styles makes this place attractive to gather. The exterior had nice seating as well. In nice weather it makes for a great people-watching spot!
Sabbalonn★★☆☆☆
Eclair au chocolate was dry and creme pâtisserie was dry. Flat white over roasted and bitter. Barquette aux fruits rouge not bad tasted fresh. Mum very happy with cholcoate chaud
Kimka Duk★★★★☆
The staff were exceptionally welcoming and attentive. The quality and flavor of the dishes I chose — the quiche Lorraine and the chausson aux pommes — were absolutely delightful and perfectly suited to my taste.
Unfortunately, the éclair was somewhat underwhelming and lacked the refinement I was expecting from a French pastry.
Overall, this became my favorite place in town during my short stay 🙂

Being Sunday morning it was the only coffee available in the area so I had doubts about it, but it proved to be an excellent choice! Super nice service, excellent coffee and delicious fresh French pastry!

Great French house food always made to perfection. The weight staff is extremely attentive as well. I’ve been there three times and will be coming back again!
Sabine Thomas★★★☆☆
We visited for Sunday dinner and found the menu somewhat limited compared to what we expected. The food was decent and enjoyable enough, though it didn’t particularly stand out. Service was on the slow side, and it was often difficult to get the attention of the waitstaff when we needed something. On a positive note, the wine was pleasant, and the outdoor seating area provided a very nice atmosphere. Overall, an okay experience with some room for improvement in service and menu variety.
icegini★★★☆☆
A nice place in one if the main squares if Tours centre. Nice cocktails and cheese- charcuterie plate. Also the staff was friendly but a bit in a rush, maybe because of how busy it was.

Tips for Choosing the Right Rooftop Cafe in Tours
Selecting the perfect rooftop venue in Tours requires a bit of local knowledge, as the city’s weather and cultural rhythms can heavily influence your experience. While all of the locations listed above offer something special, understanding the nuances of rooftop culture in the Loire Valley will ensure you are never caught off guard. Keep these practical considerations in mind to maximize your enjoyment and secure the best possible spot.
Book ahead for golden hour.
The French take their evening apéritif seriously, and rooftop terraces in Tours fill up quickly between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM. If you want a prime spot with unobstructed views of the cathedral or the sunset, call ahead or use online reservation systems. Walk-ins are often relegated to interior seating or left waiting at the bar.
Check the weather and wind exposure.
Tours enjoys a temperate climate, but rooftops are naturally more exposed to breezes than street-level terraces. Even on a warm summer day, evenings can feel chilly once the sun drops behind the buildings. Bring a light jacket or scarf, and check if the venue provides blankets or overhead heating before you commit to a late dinner.
Understand the difference between a cafe and a restaurant.
Some rooftops in Tours operate strictly as bars with a limited snack menu, while others function as full-service restaurants. If you are hungry, verify whether the kitchen serves a complete dinner or just planches of charcuterie and cheese. There is nothing worse than arriving starving at a venue that only serves olives and cocktails.
Look beyond the Old Town.
While the historic center of Tours has undeniable charm, some of the best modern rooftops are located slightly outside the tourist core. Areas near the train station, the Loire riverbanks, or the newer business districts often feature contemporary terraces with innovative design. Do not be afraid to walk ten minutes away from Place Plumereau for a more local experience.
Consider the orientation for sun or shade.
Depending on the time of day, a south-facing terrace can be uncomfortably hot in July and August, while a west-facing one is perfect for sunset but blinding in the early evening. Think about whether you want to bask in the afternoon sun or relax in the shade. A quick call to the venue can clarify which side of the building the terrace faces.
Exploring Tours from above is an experience that stays with you long after you have descended back to the cobblestone streets. The city’s low-rise architecture means that even a few floors up, you are treated to an intimate view of daily life unfolding below—from market vendors packing up their stalls to the soft glow of street lamps flickering on at dusk.
Whether you choose a historic terrace overlooking the Cathédrale Saint-Gatien or a sleek modern bar near the river, the rooftop cafes of Tours offer a unique blend of history, gastronomy, and relaxation. Take your time, order a local Touraine wine, and enjoy the rare privilege of seeing this beautiful city from a bird’s-eye view.
