Biarritz transforms when the sun dips below the Atlantic horizon. While this elegant Basque coastal town is famous for its surf breaks and imperial grandeur, its after-dark identity is equally compelling. From sophisticated wine bars tucked into Art Deco buildings to lively tapas counters spilling onto cobblestone lanes, the drinking scene here is diverse and deeply rooted in local culture.
Unlike the mega-clubs of nearby Spanish resorts, Biarritz offers an intimate, distinctly French experience. The atmosphere leans toward conviviality rather than chaos, where conversations flow as easily as the local Irouléguy wine. Whether you are wrapping up a day of surfing or dressing up for a night out, there is a perfect spot waiting for you.
Navigating the city’s nightlife can be tricky for first-time visitors because many of the best addresses are hidden in plain sight. The Les Halles neighborhood buzzes with pintxos bars, while the beachfront offers breezy terraces perfect for sunset cocktails. Knowing where the locals go versus the tourist traps can make or break your evening.
This guide focuses on quality, atmosphere, and authenticity. You won’t find generic chain pubs here; instead, you’ll discover places with character, history, and a genuine connection to the Basque Country. We’ve considered the quality of the drinks, the expertise of the staff, and the uniqueness of the setting.
To help you plan the perfect night out, we have curated a list of the essential addresses in the city. This selection covers everything from natural wine specialists and rum aficionados to classic brasseries and late-night music venues.
Whether you are a cocktail connoisseur, a craft beer lover, or simply looking for a glass of crisp white wine with an ocean view, there is a bar here with your name on it. Let’s explore the best that Biarritz has to offer after dark.

The view is amazing!! The food is soooo good, i ordered a caesar salad and it was so yummy and filling 😋! The atmosphere is great, the deco is super pretty, great music and the workers are super sweet and kind ☺️. I think that the prices are very good for a restaurant / café that has SUCH a nice view !!! Amazing experience and i will 100% come back!!!

Loved the cozy atmosphere, delicious food, and friendly staff. Service was perfect, and the ocean view made it even better. Highly recommend for a relaxing break in Biarritz!

We went night exploring on our first night along the well lit beach and found everything here was chic, beautiful and calm, but this little beach bar called to us from the top of the cliffs and we walked down onto the old beach to discover a hidden gem. We arrived late (too late for food) but the atmosphere compelled us to stay and have cocktails. An excellent choice as it turned out. Highly recommend this beautiful spot 😊
Niklas Dominick★★☆☆☆
We ordered a decaf espresso and an orange juice. The juice was refreshing and nice, but the decaf espresso was almost tasteless and hardly drinkable—we definitely wouldn’t recommend this place if you’re looking for good coffee.
The service was friendly and accommodating. The waiter seemed a bit lost (maybe it was his first day), but the manager stepped in and made sure everything went smoothly.
The best part of the café is the view—it’s truly amazing. We sat outside, and while the cushions were comfortable, they could have been cleaner. We didn’t go inside, so we can’t comment on the interior design.
We didn’t try any food, and there was no Wi-Fi or power outlets available.
Overall, worth it for the view, but not for the coffee.

If I could give more than 5 stars I would. The location is absolutely amazing, the service was attentive and super friendly. The food was completely delicious, the best calamari I’ve ever had.

Really nice rooftop tapas place. We went to the higher of the two rooftops. The food and service and vibes were all really great. The kiwi daiquiri is can’t miss and the duck carpaccio was the standout food dish. We got 4 items for 2 people and it was a little too much food. I’d recommend 3 items. The cake was just alright and my espresso after dinner took like 10 min but other than that, great time.
Danny Estavillo★★★★★
The view at Olatua is unbelievable! That alone was worth a visit for a drink. We enjoyed their cocktails, wine and food. The portions were very generous, we actually ordered too much food for four people. The staff was incredibly kind and even went the extra mile since our French is not so good and accommodated with English. Our kids 9 & 11 enjoyed it and especially that you could peak over into the aquarium and occasionally see a seal! I highly recommend visiting Olatua!
G. Hauray★★★★★
Seems like a tourist trap because of its roof deck overlooking the rocher de la vierge but the food and drinks are top quality. The croquettes, carpaccio, and roasted carrots were all delicious. It is an ideal spot to relax.

Stunning views and a great vibe! Definitely recommend stopping by for a drink. Just a heads-up, it gets pretty windy up there.
Lauren Elise★★★★★
I stopped here after spending a few hours at the aquarium and had a tea.
I would come back for food because the view and vibe is great, even on a cloudy rainy day. (Playlist is great)

One of my favorite new lunch spots in Biarritz. The place is very cozy and the staff is exceptionally friendly, relaxed and attentive. There’s a changing daily plate as well as super tasty dishes on the lunch menu – each one more delicious than the next. Today I had the Ossobucco and it was awesome. What I really like here is that the cooking is honest and authentic, without too many crazy reinterpretations. The portions are huge and filling – and all at a very fair price. Thanks for that super cool food experience! I’ll definitely come back again.

Very friendly and quick service. The presentation of the food is very good and the atmosphere is nice!
The food itself is decent, but still a tiny bit rough around the edges.
The intestines of the crevettes were not removed, some of the chips (fries) were not cooked so well and the squid tentacle was a bit dry. I am not saying the food was bad, this is critique on a high level, but this is what takes a star away for me.
Serhii Shapran★★★★★
A really great experience at Chez BB: Bistroquet Biarritz.
The hot dog and monkfish tail were delicious.
We also had calamari as a starter — highly recommend it 🙂
The service was excellent, and the waiters spoke English 🫶
Definitely recommend visiting! 🇺🇦

Excellent sand quick service when ordering Moules Frite. They came pretty small but don't let the size fool you, they were delicious. Soft and delicate, moules marinière we're everything we expected. This came with fries and bread. A comment on the fries, very good! Unusual size and seasoned with paprika, would definitely come back here for this dish, or try a new one!
I've been coming to Biarritz a long time and there's always been a restaurant here, don't remember if it was always Chez Bibi but we recommend a visit. Don't be in a rush, enjoy the ambiance and French food!

We landed in Biarritz really late and by the time we made it to restaurants it was really late, 10:30 pm. Needless today, my nearly all the restaurants were closed but we found this place with their kitchen still open. We were welcomed and seated in a quiet area despite it being very busy and we appreciate that greatly as we had our baby with us. We ordered two smash burgers which were really welcome and tasty, accompanied by some good fries.
If you're out late looking for food, this is a solid option. They had a varied menu and very affordable. The restaurant across the street in comparison was also open but a solid 25% more expensive.
Marion Welton★★★★☆
Nice place with a good atmosphere. Reasonably priced and friendly staff. The confit de boef was delicious woth a large chunk of very tender beef, but unfortunately the cordon bleu wasn't really up to expectations. When it arrived at the table, half the parmesan breaded crust on the top was missing and the one on the bottom was a bit soggy. The chicken was only luke warm, quite dry and the whole dish was lacking flavour. So 5 stars for the beef, but only 2 - 2.5 for the cordon bleu
Kadir Aras★★★★★
Very nice atmosphere on a busy corner, friendly waiter, ideal for a break when wandering in the city. Very cheap compared to other places and extremely tasty food. We ordered padron peppers and special fries. I recommend this place. You can trust all the reviews about this place.

I can recomend. Food was realy tasty
marcelo rs★☆☆☆☆
I couldn't rate 0 stars unfortunately. We are tourists from London. We were refused entry by staff at the demand of the manager, without any reason initially given. This was inexplicable, a total surprise. Eventually a barman found us outside and repeated the manager wanted us out; as we were so confused, we felt compelled to ask if the refusal was because we are a gay couple. At that point we were told the manager had said one of us was acting drunk (neither of us had had anything to drink at that point), and the barman further denied they would ever refuse a gay couple. Given we were not drunk, problematic, aggressive, rude, or different from other customers in any other way, it is difficult to be persuaded.
This ruined our trip to Biarritz.

Essential Tips for Enjoying the Bar Scene in Biarritz
Understanding the local customs and logistics will significantly enhance your experience when exploring Biarritz at night. The city has a unique rhythm influenced by the ocean, the seasons, and Basque dining habits. Here is how to drink like a local and make the most of your evening.
1. Embrace the Pintxo Culture
In Biarritz, drinking is rarely done on an empty stomach. The Basque tradition of pintxos (small bites) is integral to the bar experience. When you order a drink at a traditional bar, especially near Les Halles, look at the counter. You are expected to help yourself to a small plate or two. This isn’t a sit-down dinner; it’s a social ritual that pairs perfectly with a glass of Txakoli or local cider.
2. Master the Happy Hour Timing
The French concept of "Apéro" is sacred. Most quality bars in Biarritz offer "Happy Hours" between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM. This is the best time to visit upscale cocktail bars or beachfront terraces if you are on a budget. However, note that many of the trendier natural wine bars do not discount their products, valuing the integrity of the wine over volume sales.
3. Dress Smart Casual
Biarritz is an elegant town, and this is reflected in its door policies and general vibe. While you don’t need a suit and tie, most establishments appreciate a "smart casual" approach. Avoid walking into a cocktail lounge in wet swim trunks or sandy flip-flops. A clean shirt, decent shoes, and a light jacket will ensure you fit right in with the sophisticated local crowd.
4. Plan for Late Nights
Dinner in France typically starts around 8:30 PM or 9:00 PM, which means the bars don’t get busy until much later. If you arrive at a bar at 7:00 PM, it might feel quiet. The energy peaks between 10:00 PM and midnight. If you are looking for a lively atmosphere, don’t rush out too early; instead, pace yourself with a long dinner or a sunset walk before hitting the town.
5. Explore Beyond the Seafront
While the views from the beachfront terraces are spectacular, the prices often reflect the real estate. To find the most authentic and reasonably priced drinks, walk a few blocks inland. The streets around Les Halles and the Port Vieux are dense with small, characterful bars where the focus is on the quality of the liquid in your glass rather than the view.
The beauty of drinking in Biarritz lies in its walkability. You can easily transition from a sunset cocktail overlooking the Grande Plage to a hidden wine cellar in the old port within a matter of minutes. The city is compact, safe, and designed for strolling, allowing you to sample a variety of atmospheres in a single evening without needing a taxi.
Ultimately, the best bar in Biarritz is the one that matches your current mood. Whether you find yourself deep in conversation with a local winemaker or listening to the waves crash against the rocks with a cocktail in hand, the city offers an intoxicating blend of relaxation and sophistication that is hard to find anywhere else on the French coast.
