12 Best Traditional French Restaurants in Biarritz

Biarritz has long balanced its reputation as a glamorous surf capital with a deep-rooted Basque identity that reveals itself most intimately at the dinner table. While the coastal city is known for its breathtaking views of the Bay of Biscay and its elegant Belle Époque architecture, the true soul of the town is often found simmering in a copper pot or roasting over an open fire. For travelers looking to move beyond the trendy tapas bars and beachfront cafés, the traditional restaurants of Biarritz offer a portal into a culinary heritage shaped by the Atlantic Ocean and the Pyrenees mountains.

The local cuisine here is distinct from the rest of France, relying heavily on the specific terroir of the Basque Country. You will encounter ingredients like Espelette pepper, Bayonne ham, and fresh seafood sourced from the nearby port of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, all prepared with recipes passed down through generations. Dining in these establishments is rarely a quick affair; it is a leisurely ritual meant to be savored with good wine and better company. Understanding this culture is the first step to selecting a restaurant that offers an authentic experience rather than a tourist-focused imitation.

The challenge for visitors is navigating the dense landscape of dining options to find places that have maintained their integrity over the years. Many restaurants in the city center have adapted their menus to suit international palates, losing the rustic edge that defines true Basque cooking. To help you avoid the traps of generic "French" dining, we have focused on venues that prioritize local sourcing, seasonal menus, and time-honored cooking techniques. These are the places where locals go to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, and Sunday family lunches.

In this guide, we have curated a list of the most respected traditional establishments in and around the Biarritz area. Whether you are looking for a rustic cider house experience, a refined dining room with white tablecloths, or a hidden bistro tucked away from the main promenade, there is a table here for you. Each of these venues offers a unique window into the flavors that define the Basque Coast.

These restaurants are known for their consistency, their adherence to tradition, and their ability to make diners feel like guests in a Basque home. From hearty stews designed to warm you after a winter surf session to delicate preparations of line-caught fish in the summer, the menus change with the rhythm of the sea and the soil. By choosing any of the options below, you are ensuring a meal that respects the history of Biarritz while supporting the artisans who keep these traditions alive.

Below is our carefully selected list of the best traditional French restaurants in Biarritz, categorized by their unique atmosphere and culinary specialties.

Very friendly and quick service. The presentation of the food is very good and the atmosphere is nice! The food itself is decent, but still a tiny bit rough around the edges. The intestines of the crevettes were not removed, some of the chips (fries) were not cooked so well and the squid tentacle was a bit dry. I am not saying the food was bad, this is critique on a high level, but this is what takes a star away for me.

A really great experience at Chez BB: Bistroquet Biarritz. The hot dog and monkfish tail were delicious. We also had calamari as a starter — highly recommend it 🙂 The service was excellent, and the waiters spoke English 🫶 Definitely recommend visiting! 🇺🇦

Excellent sand quick service when ordering Moules Frite. They came pretty small but don't let the size fool you, they were delicious. Soft and delicate, moules marinière we're everything we expected. This came with fries and bread. A comment on the fries, very good! Unusual size and seasoned with paprika, would definitely come back here for this dish, or try a new one! I've been coming to Biarritz a long time and there's always been a restaurant here, don't remember if it was always Chez Bibi but we recommend a visit. Don't be in a rush, enjoy the ambiance and French food!

The hidden gem in Biarritz. The small restaurant with a homemade dish. Very dish are delicious. The quality and quantity are the same. The price is reasonable (cheaper than others restaurants in Biarritz)

Don’t be put off by its location, this is a wonderful couple run local restaurant. The food is beautifully cooked. I asked for just simple salad for starters and I was given beautifully dressed white asparagus, Toms and lettuce, we also had hot buttered snails. Dish of the day, mussels and chips, absolutely delicious, also had rare duck. Good local carafes of wine. Lovely friendly service

This is an absolute gem of a restaurant in Biarritz and you absolutely must add it to your itinerary. Run by a married couple (speaking French and Spanish) they will delight you with a small but perfectly cooked menu which includes homemade desserts. The value for money you get here is second to none. I HIGHLY recommend the escargot and the duck dishes. The pistachio Panna cotta we had afterwards was an absolute treat!

Having made the rounds of several Bouillons across Paris and Bordeaux, I can say with some authority that this one stands apart — a cut above its siblings in every culinary respect. The kitchen delivers with a confidence that the others rarely match, and the room hums with that particular energy one quietly hopes for but seldom finds. A reservation is not merely advisable — it is essential. Tables are claimed within moments of opening, and rightly so. Do not leave this to chance.

We had amazing duck Confit with fries, but it was so great we forgot to take photos, and we got Mousse au chocolat, they were quite generous with portion as you can see. Atmospheres was great, amazing stuff and really tasty food! Highly recommended!

We had a great dinner at Bouillon Hortense in Biarritz. I ordered the chicken, which was incredibly juicy and full of flavor, especially with the creamy sauce — simple, comforting, and perfectly cooked. Philippe had the beef, and after tasting it I can confirm it was just as delicious and tender. The food felt classic and well-executed, exactly what you hope for in a place like Bouillon Hortense. We’d happily come back.

Excellent restaurant close to the sea with great food for a very affordable price. Atmosphere : the place is located close to the casino, 1min away from the beach. We sat outside and it was lovely. Food wise : we got to try many things. The eggs with truffle, rillettes, beef tartare, fish of the day, duck confit, sausage and mash potatoes, It was all good. Price wise : very affordable for the type of food and quality served. Service wise : they were very accomodating with us, got us a table outside big enough for our group. All good. Overall it’s a total recommendation. I’ll certainly come back.

Hidden gem! This restaurant is a bit outside of the city center, but certainly worth the ~15 minute walk. It’s the perfect combination of casual and elegant — the food was absolutely delicious and reasonably priced! Both of the people who served us were friendly, helpful and spoke great English. I’m Not a huge dessert person, but wow, this one blew my mind! 👌🏼

The friendliest team in Biarritz! I was lucky to get a table without a reservation and ended up having an absolutely fabulous meal. Chef Max is skilled and creative. The menu will make you want to order every dish, and every dish you’ll order will be worth It, believe me! Cécile en salle will take care of you and make sure you get the best service ever. The atmosphere is warm and cozy. I dined solo but had a charming patron nearby who kept me entertained 🐶 Merci a toute l’équipe et à la prochaine ⭐️

What a delightful restaurant that serves fine quality offerings. The starter ham with cream starter was delicious. Followed by escargot coated with deep fried potato strings in a rich butter cream saice. The beef steak was tender and juicy and one of the tastiest steak i have had cooked perferctly medium with a rich meat sauce. No room for dessert. Service was also great. Kudos to the professional waiter.

This is a great place to watch the sunset while dining. The food itself was pretty good. The cod was very tasty, but one could‘ve gotten more out of the lobster pasta. Our waiter was a friendly, funny and patient. All in all, a pretty good place if you want a nice ambiance at the beach.

Friendly welcome, efficient service, tasty food, great view to the Atlantic. Thanks to the team at L'Impératrice.

Best escargot and hake we have had in France on this trip. The cocktails we had before dinner were really excellent and the sommelier made great wine suggestions for dinner. Price was very reasonable for what all we had.
C R★★☆☆☆
I ordered a salad and french fries from the menu as a main course and received the kitchen leftovers.. I had to call and ask the waiter if this was the salad, and he replied it was called “the salad of the day” when asked, bc it was looking like anything but a salad, instead it was consisting mainly out of stewed broccoli and cauliflowers (which was cut with a contaminated knife bc I could taste the shrimp out of it) hummus, and a not so fresh decorative salad leaf with cherry tomatoes on top… and the French fries? In oil soaked chunky potato wedges... The only thing nice was the ambience, now it has 2-3 hours passed since I had the dinner and my stomach is still upset. I don’t like leaving negative thoughts and reviews on the internet but as a vegetarian I felt very disappointed. So I wouldn’t recommend it if you are a strict vegan/vegetarian.

Lovely experience here. Best restaurant we went to in Biarritz by far! We enjoyed it so much that we went back again. Reasonably priced, nice bistro vibe and good honest food. Can recommend!
David Stewart★★★★★
Great casual and affordable restaurant in Biarritz. We had a mixed appetizer plate of grilled peppers, calamari, ham, and croquetas, a seafood risotto, fish and chips, a beer, and a 50cl bottle of wine, all for 69 euros. The food was delicious, the service was friendly (and multilingual), and the ambiance was excellent. I'd definitely go back.
Cherine★★★★★
The combined platter was a nice choice, I wasn’t hungry but wanted to try the specialties of the region all in one plate: serrano ham, pimentos dal padron, accras de morue and the fried calamars. Outstanding really, i was tempted to try other dishes but unfortunately this plate was more than enough for me.

Dinner at Marloe, located in the outskirts of the city in an austere modern building with the interior a bit more modern, expansive and cold than we expected from such a highly rated French Bistro. Luckily the food and service made up for the visual let down. The Chickpea soup, Scallops, and seafood Cannelloni were well prepared and presented.
Molly Boyd★★★★★
My sister and I went on a quick trip to Biarritz from San Sebastián and we’re recommended Marloe. We enjoyed the tasting menu with wine pairing and were beyond impressed. We loved every dish and were so satisfied with the service. We would give this 10 stars if we could!
Tim Wong★★★★★
A perfect dinner experience with great decor and atmosphere, polite service and awesome food. I had the autumn velouté soup with chestnuts and mushrooms, the chef’s signature lobster with its bisque and risotto, and the crepes suzettes (which was made from scratch and the steps explained to me). Overall definitely highly recommend, I only had 1 night’s stay in Biarritz and felt very fortunate I got to dine here! Thanks to the whole team at Marloe for a great dinner.
Eric Beydoun★★★★★
Great experience, food and service at Le Marloe Biarritz. We ordered a number of appetizers, entrees, drinks, and desserts, and were blown away by all of them. Of course I personally had to try the Xmas specialty of the moment Volail with truffle and foie gras. I've never eaten such a moist piece of chicken. The customer service was exceptional and the chefs specialty the "Omar" was bursting with flavor. A must, if you're ever in Biarritz.
Francesco★★★★★
Absolutely exceptional 👌 the greatest service and accomodation I experienced in Biarritz. Not a single dish disappointed, they were all very exciting, but the carpaccio was the most memorable. If in Biarritz, this place should be amongst your top selection.

Stopped by for a drink while sightseeing. Set in a hotel courtyard, it’s a lovely spot for a short break, enjoying tapas and a glass of wine. Recommendations: CROQUETAS DE JAMBON SERRANO • 10€ TATAKI DE THON • 13€ CHIPIRONS GRILLÉS EN PERSILLADE • 12€ Perfect for spending a wonderful sunset moment with friends.

Good food, albeit not special and a bit too expensive for small portions. We had the chipirons, coer de boef tomato, some paté, basque cake, lemon cheesecake (v good)
Sabrina Popescu★★★★★
Super tasty dishes. The sauce for the beef skewers was delicious, and the service very nice and quick
Ivar Zantinge★★☆☆☆
Nice corner of the city, good looking terrace in the shade below some beautiful trees. Good atmosphere and friendly staff. Food was nice, not super nice but good enough. However, VERY small portions for quite high prices. Both for the wine (looked like half a glass) as well as the main course (we had tuna tartar). They were almost out of fries and saved what they had left for kids, nice gesture. Slow in serving, or checking for additional drinks/ dessert etc. After quite a wait we went to the cash register to pay and left without dessert or leaving a tip. Also: one toilet for women, men and disabled is a bit spare. Too bad, potentially a really good place.

Fresh local cuisine. Exceptional service. Wonderful meal experience. All the dishes were excellent, but the Onglet de Boeuf, Chipirons, and Tomates and burrata were standouts for us.

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our lunch at Marius. We were experiencing some travel problems and the staff pushed back our booking an hour without any hesitation at all. Upon arrival a lovely lady put our suitcase and baggage away for us without any fuss. The food that followed was nothing short of perfect. We had ham and sardines to start which were both divine. Then we had tuna and pork, also very lovely. Cooked to perfection. Sides were vegetable and salad, simple and beautifully fresh. We shared il flottante for dessert, an absolutely perfect end to the meal. So light and fluffy! The surroundings of the restaurant are just stunning, surrounded by beautiful green countryside, with some horses trotting around happily in a field a few metres away from where we ate. A gorgeous experience, beautiful food- this is a must if you are in Biarritz!!

My husband & I were traveling abroad San Sebastian and others towns nearby. We had made an stop in Biarritz. We booked Marius in early advance. We were not disappointed at all. We find out that Marius dishes were delicious, we plenty fresh & cooked vegetables and great meat dishes. Desert was chocolate suffle. Delicious Country Basque Cuisine! There is a beautiful small hotel next door. Beautiful views from the Restaurant.

Absolutely wonderful!! Setting idillic. Food exceptional. Service perfect. So happy we were fortunate enough to visit!!
Anisa White★★★★★
We visited this restaurant just 15 minutes from the center of Biarritz, and although we hadn’t heard anything about it beforehand, we quickly realized we had found something special. As soon as we arrived, we noticed almost every table had the same dish — cod with clams — so we knew we had to try it. And it did not disappoint. The flavors were incredibly refined — this is far from a typical restaurant. Each dish felt like a carefully crafted culinary experiment. Even the bread deserves special praise — simple yet exceptional. Everything we tried was delicious. The service was wonderful, warm and attentive. You truly feel like staying longer, especially with the beautiful terrace and horses quietly passing nearby. A hidden gem.

The food and the view outstanding. We had seafood and fish, very fresh, tasty and beautifully served. If you drive there, go to the car park which is just in front. Parking on the street is rather impossible. The lady at the reception very nice, the waiter a bold shaved pal very nice, humorous and professional. The rest of the people were not really nice or attentive, they were a bit rude. That’s why 4* for the service.
Chris Nigro★★★★★
Our girls had the chicken dish and one of them said this is the best chicken I have ever had. I had a great fish dish and my wife had the tuna tartar but it was a little too heavy on the wasabi but still full of flavor. Presentation was amazing. Wine pours were a little small but the price per glass was also less than other restaurants we had been to.

Four of us dined here for lunch on Oct 15 and while portions were not overly large they certainly were sufficient if sharing some tapas, each having an entre, followed by dessert. Staff were welcoming and attentive without being intrusive. All the dishes were delicious.

I had the escalope for stater then the lobster for main course. I will order disserte in a minute but wanted to write a review right now because I am so excited to post my review before I head out. An excellent experience from start to finish. The tasting menu was thoughtfully designed, with creative and flavorful dishes. The service was impeccable: attentive from the very beginning, asking about any allergies and paying close attention to every detail. A restaurant I would highly recommend for anyone looking for a high-quality dining experience. As a small suggestion for improvement, I chose the fully vegetarian tasting menu, while my companion selected the vegetarian menu with fish. In our opinion, the fish portion in the latter was quite small, and we felt it could have played a more prominent role to better distinguish it from the fully vegetarian menu.
Carsten Matthäus★★★★★
My 16-year-old son and I visited Dialogues one Wednesday evening. It was a real treat. The sophistication of the dishes, the way the courses were presented, the atmosphere, the service – everything was of such a high standard that it provided the perfect end to our trip to France. We’re taking home many wonderful culinary memories. Thank you very much!
Magdaléna Guráňová★★★★★
Fair to say I had the best meal of my life there! We stumbled upon this restaurant by accident and it absolutely blown us away! We had the 7 course lunch menu for 55€ and we thought the first course alone was the entire menu! 🥹 the starter came with lots of little canapés and other delicious treats. We were almost ready to go and pay when they started bring in another amazing dish after dish 😱the value for many is absolutely amazing! The ambience of the place is also great and service equally professional. I can’t stress enough how amazing this place is!
Yulia Plakhotnyuk★★★★★
This was one of the best dîning expériences in my life. It was rather a gastronomic theater than a dinner. Expensive, but it worths the price. As they don’t serve meat (only sea food and veggies), I didn’t have this heavy feeling of overeating after compare to the majority of other set menu.
Alun Williams★★★★★
The food was absolutely stunning, really thoughtfully combined flavours and vegetables elevated to be the main star, all beautifully presented. t looks a bit intimidating from outside but the service was excellent too, really helpful and friendly waitress.

Tips for Choosing the Right Traditional Restaurant in Biarritz

Selecting the perfect spot for dinner can be tricky in a city with such a high density of restaurants. While the list above provides a curated selection of the finest venues, knowing how to navigate the local dining scene will enhance your overall experience. The following tips are designed to help you dine like a local, avoid common tourist pitfalls, and ensure that every meal you have in Biarritz is memorable for the right reasons.

Prioritize Seasonal and Local Menus
The best traditional restaurants in Biarritz change their menus frequently to reflect what is available at the local markets. Look for menus that feature specific local ingredients like chipirons (baby squid), pigeon from the region, or cheese from the Basque mountains. If a restaurant is serving the exact same menu in August as it does in February, it is likely not sourcing fresh, local produce. Authentic kitchens rely on the arrival of the seasons; ask your server what is "fresh today" to gauge the kitchen’s connection to the market.

Book Ahead, Especially During High Season
Biarritz is a bustling destination from June to September, and the best tables at traditional restaurants are reserved days, if not weeks, in advance. Unlike larger cities where you can wander in and find a seat, the intimate nature of Basque dining rooms means capacity is limited. If you have your heart set on a specific restaurant from the list above, make a reservation as soon as your travel dates are confirmed. This is particularly important for Friday and Saturday nights, as well as Sunday lunches, which are sacred family affairs in France.

Look for "Fait Maison" and "Artisan" Indicators
Since 2014, French law has required restaurants to label dishes that are homemade as "fait maison." This is a useful tool for identifying kitchens that do not rely on industrial pre-packaged food. While this doesn’t automatically guarantee a traditional Basque recipe, it is a strong indicator that the chef is preparing food from scratch. Additionally, look for mentions of local suppliers or "producteurs locaux" on the menu, which signals a commitment to the regional economy and quality ingredients.

Understand the Difference Between a Bistro and a Gastronomic Restaurant
In Biarritz, you will find a range of dining formats. A traditional bistro or "brasserie" will offer a more casual, convivial atmosphere with hearty portions of stews and grilled meats. A gastronomic restaurant will offer a more formal, multi-course experience with intricate plating. Both can be traditional, but they serve different moods. If you want a loud, lively evening with wine and charcuterie, choose a bistro. If you are celebrating a special occasion and want to experience the pinnacle of French culinary technique, choose a gastronomic table.

Don’t Skip the Regional Wine List
While Bordeaux is close by, the Basque Country has its own unique wine culture that pairs perfectly with the local food. Look for Irouléguy wines, which are grown in the Pyrenees foothills and are the only appellation in the Northern Basque Country. These wines, whether red, white, or rosé, are produced in small quantities and offer a distinct minerality that cuts through the richness of dishes like axoa (veal stew) or piperade. A restaurant that features Irouléguy on its list is demonstrating a true commitment to the region.

Dining traditionally in Biarritz is about more than just eating; it is an act of cultural immersion. When you sit down at one of these tables, you are participating in a ritual that has defined this coastline for centuries. The sound of a cork popping from a bottle of local wine, the sight of a perfectly roasted chicken being carved tableside, and the aroma of Espelette pepper hitting a hot pan are the sensory memories that will stay with you long after you leave the beach.
