Paris changes the way you think about everyday errands. In a city defined by its boulangeries, fromageries, and open-air markets, the supermarket might seem like a purely functional afterthought. Yet for residents and long-stay visitors, knowing where to find a reliable, well-stocked grocery store is essential for managing a budget without sacrificing the French culinary standard.
The landscape of food retail in the capital has evolved dramatically over the last decade. The best options balance quality, price, and atmosphere, turning a simple restock into a genuine Parisian experience.

This Carrefour grocery store in the Saint Germain area was a very handy place to stop and pick up supplies during our stay.
We used it for waters, snacks, and most importantly, some really good wine. Their wine selection was very decent, and the prices were very good.
Self checkout was fast, and overall the experience was good.
Worth stopping by if you are in the neighborhood and need to pick up a few items.

We made a special stop at La Grande Épicerie de Paris on our last night in the city, and it was the perfect way to wrap up our trip.
The store itself is beautiful — not just a grocery store, but more of a food lover’s paradise. Everything is thoughtfully displayed, and you can find just about any French specialty you could want. It feels upscale without being intimidating, and it’s easy to spend way more time there than you planned.
Our mission was to pick up the famous French butter to bring back home to the States. They vacuum seal it for you, which makes traveling with it much easier and gives you peace of mind for the flight. Pro tip: make sure you pack it in your checked bag. TSA can (and likely will) confiscate it if it’s in your carry-on or personal item — even if it’s vacuum sealed.
If you’re in Paris and want high-quality food products or edible souvenirs to bring home, La Grande Épicerie is absolutely worth a visit. It’s a very nice grocery store and a great final stop before heading home.
Fa10★★★★☆
La Grande Épicerie de Paris is a paradise for food lovers. The selection is simply incredible, with an impressive variety of products from France and around the world. Whether you’re looking for fine chocolates, spices, pastries, cheese, wine, gourmet ingredients, or unique international products, you’ll probably find it here.
The store is beautifully organized, making it enjoyable to explore even if you’re just browsing. The quality of the products is excellent, and there is always something new and interesting to discover.
Another advantage is its location right next to Le Bon Marché, making it a perfect stop during a shopping trip in the area. Even if you don’t plan to buy anything, it’s worth visiting for the experience alone. A true gourmet destination in Paris!
Ramon Klose★★★★★
Grande Épicerie was a lovely stop during our Paris trip. The store has an impressive selection of gourmet foods, French specialties, pastries, cheeses, wines, and other high-quality products. Everything felt elegant and beautifully presented, and it was fun exploring the different sections. We found some delicious treats and gifts to bring home. Definitely worth visiting while in Paris!
Özge Ergün★★★★★
It is a must visit. On the ground level, there is the most elegant supermarket with great variety of everything, but there is something special in every corner, you can find great products from France and other countries to take home or give as a gift. There is a cellar downstairs with a wide selection of wines and spirits, it is not to miss. There are also places inside to sit and enjoy a delicious treat.
Michael A.★★★★☆
La Grande Epicerie de Paris was recommended to us as a food destination while in Paris, so we decided to stop by and visit this luxury food hall.
There is definitely a huge variety throughout the store, including pastries, breads, meats, cookies, biscuits, chocolates, gifts, and a very large wine selection on the ground level. There are multiple things to choose from, including some gluten free items as well.
The main staircase leads you upstairs, where there are a lot of home goods and also a restaurant Cofee bar area, which was sunny and bright.
One thing I did notice is that prices seem to be more on the expensive side, but this place is also more about the experience of walking around, looking at the different products, and seeing the variety of labels and specialty items.
It is about a 20 minute walk from the Saint Germain area, but it is a pleasant walk through the neighborhoods.
Worth stopping in if you enjoy food halls, specialty items, wine, gifts, and the overall Paris food experience.

Fine assortment, good for snacks, (cold) drinks and simple ready made meals. Staff are mostly indifferent. No cutlery to go with your salade.

They have a limited selection of food items as well as wine. Unfortunately, as some other reviews have stated, some employees are very rude. I went to purchase a bottle of wine. In the Gare du Nord region, wine can only be purchased from 7 am to 5 pm. I attempted to purchase a bottle at 8 am. The cashier told me in French I could not purchase a bottle until 9 am. I replied, in French that the sign right behind her clearly stated 7 am. She rudely replied, in French that she could not explain any easier that it was 9. She implied that maybe I could not understand her even though I am a French teacher although I am from Canada and my accent is different.
I left the store frustrated and will not return for the remainder of my visit.

Every time I go here a bald short man man working at the automatic registers is super mean and likes to yell at people. I think that he thinks that he has all the power. Go to the Monop upstairs, they are much nicer.
Mateusz Mąkinia★★★☆☆
The shop is located at the metro Saint Lazare level minus 1. The shop does not have too much choice but you will buy the most necessary things at reasonable prices as per the Paris conditions. I recommend.
MT C★☆☆☆☆
Constantly disorganised, cash registers are nearly all self service, and workers hurry and pressure you out the door 40 minutes before closing 'Go, we are closed'. Management needs to clarify to their team that all customers deserve to be treated with respect until the doors are closed for the day.
Jessy J★★★★☆
Clean, simple supermarket with not as many items (because that is the concept). A good place to buy last minute snacks before your journey. The cashier I met is very friendly too 👍🏻. He automatically spoke in English when he noticed that I cannot speak in French.
J. K.★☆☆☆☆
Personnel très désagréable. Faites bien attention aux caisses. On m’a pas rendu le bon montant. Arnaque.
This place is in a location that attracts people in a rush. They must count on that because the employees are very unprofessional. I was so ripped off here. I’m sure they thought I wouldn’t notice but when I confronted them they were so shady about it. Pay attention to prices and the change you get back. Or better yet pay at the self checkout with your card.

Monoprix for me is Paris’ version of Target?? This is where I get all snack supplies to take back to the U.S. All their chips that we don’t have here are available like the simple Lay’s but chicken rotisserie flavored! Don’t forget to get their own nougat. It’s waaaay cheaper that at the airport and tastes even better. Not to forget their small bakery section. Their Suisse chocolat is bomb! 💣 😋
Magda G★★★★★
This supermarket ud absolutely packed with affordable French products and feels like a great place to browse local items.
They carry a selection of French cheese flavored crackers & basil as well. They carry several local French sweets companies; most items are very affordable, many under €3. They carry Kusmi tea and Frech mustard and high quality flavored salt.
There’s also a nice range of small French souvenirs like mugs, eyeglass cases, notebooks, and beautifully tin packaged chocolates near the register that would make great gifts.
I was also happy to see a good vegan selection, including yogurts, cheeses, tofu, soy beef and other imitation meats.
They have a quite large selection of wines ans beer as well.
If you’re looking for inexpensive French snacks, souvenirs, or local products all in one place, this is definitely worth stopping by.
Make sure you keep youd receipt to exit the store.

Very convenient and well stocked store.
This Monoprix location is perfect for quick grocery runs or picking up everyday essentials. The store is clean, well organized, and offers a great selection of fresh food, snacks, and household items. I especially appreciate the quality of the products and the variety available.
The staff are efficient and polite, and the late opening hours make it even more practical. A reliable and easy stop in the city center. I come here often and always leave satisfied. 😊
Chris Churcher★★★★☆
A little pricey but the selection of fresh produce is fantastic, a variety of beautifully presented fruits and vegetables that you won't find at Carrefour, along with everything else you'll need. Tip: Make sure you weigh and price up the fresh produce downstairs with the scales provided, you won't be able to do it at the tills upstairs. I forgot this with some of the items and was in a rush, thankfully the young lady at the self-checkouts helped me out so I didn't have to go back down and do it, very friendly service and a nice food shopping experience that feels a bit more special than your average supermarket.

Allen★☆☆☆☆
I had a very unpleasant and insulting experience at this location during my trip to Paris last month. I remember the exact date because it was my first day in Paris (May 23, 2026).
I visited this Franprix to buy water and a USB cable. The USB cable was secured beside the cashier area, so I approached the cashier and politely asked to purchase it in English.
Instead of helping me, this tall Black male cashier kept saying "Bonjour, Bonjour, Bonjour, Bonjour, Bonjour..." while refusing to assist me. It was obvious that he was not trying to help but was trying to make a point because I had not greeted him first.
As a first-time visitor to France, I was completely unaware of the custom of beginning a conversation with "Bonjour." Had the cashier politely explained this cultural expectation, I would have happily apologized and greeted him properly. Instead, I was made to feel embarrassed and unwelcome.
What makes this even more disappointing is that this store is located right next to the Louvre Museum, one of the most visited tourist attractions in the world. A business operating in such a tourist-heavy area should expect customers from different countries and cultures. Staff should be trained to assist visitors, not mock or lecture them for not knowing local customs.
I respect French culture and have no issue with the expectation of saying "Bonjour." My issue is with the way I was treated. Customer service means helping people understand local customs, not refusing assistance and repeatedly saying the same word in a condescending manner.
This happened on my very first day in Paris and unfortunately left a lasting negative impression. As an international visitor whose first language is English, I felt disrespected despite speaking politely and respectfully. I tell all my friends and people I know not to visit France because of this experience, unless they want to be treated like idiots simply because they didn't say "Hi."
WELL DONE, FRANPRIX!
I hope management addresses this issue and provides better customer service training for staff who regularly interact with tourists from around the world.

The employer must be horrible. The staff deserve medals. It is incredibly hot in the shop and they continue to serve customers politely. Why is there not even a fan over the tills? For goodness sake get out there and see the conditions the staff are working in. Even so...The salad bar is very good. Yesterday the iceberg lettuce was a bit sad, but mixed leaves vibrant and fresh.
mile★☆☆☆☆
This was an absolutely unpleasant experience.
When I was leaving the store, a staff member asked to check my bag. I understand that stores may have security procedures, but the way this was handled felt rude, intrusive, and disrespectful. There was no clear explanation, and I was made to feel as if I had done something wrong simply for shopping there.
If bag checks are part of the store policy, they should be carried out politely, clearly, and consistently — not in a way that makes customers feel targeted or humiliated. Customer service is not just about selling products; it is also about treating people with basic respect.
I left the store feeling very uncomfortable and disappointed. I would not recommend this location unless they seriously improve how they deal with customers.

Kay★☆☆☆☆
I am extremely disappointed with my experience at this supermarket where I am a regular customer.
I arrived this evening at 8:40pm, knowing exactly what I needed, and was moving quickly through the store — I was not browsing or wasting time. Instead of being treated like a customer, I was aggressively rushed by a male employee who spoke to me in a very disrespectful and hostile manner, as if I were doing something wrong.
If the store closes at 9:00pm and customers are no longer welcome after a certain time, this should be clearly communicated at the entrance. No one informed me when I walked in that I needed to hurry. There was a vague announcement over the loudspeaker, but it was unclear and easy to miss.
I understand that employees are tired — I work too, and I respect that. But that does not justify being treated like a thief or being spoken to with such impatience and disrespect.
What made the situation even worse is that when I asked for the employee’s name in order to file a complaint, his colleagues refused to provide it. This lack of accountability is unacceptable.
I left the store feeling humiliated and frustrated. Customers deserve basic respect, even at closing time. This experience was completely unprofessional, and I hope management takes this seriously.
Even though I live right next to this supermarket, I will absolutely NOT spend my money in here anymore!
Very disappointed!

I have changed this from a two star to a one star review. Despite the manager's comments below to my earlier review, the street out front is disgusting with trash. The sidewalk is filthy. But the inside of the store is also filthy. There is so much random trash and papers on the dirty floors. We stopped shopping there. The people are friendly but are not trained to pick up trash. That is management's fault.

Admittedly, this is an inner-city location, which comes with challenges, but from the moment we walked in, things felt off:
No baskets available at the entrance
Had to hunt around near the checkouts just to find one
Immediately felt overcrowded and chaotic
👥 Overcrowding & Layout Issues
We visited around 4:30pm, and the store was extremely busy:
Aisles packed with people
Checkout queues stretching halfway down the aisles
Difficult to move, browse, or even find products
At times, it felt like there were 30–100 people queuing, which made the whole experience stressful rather than convenient.
📦 Stock & Store Condition
Several shelves were empty
Boxes and clutter left in aisles
General feeling of disorganisation
It didn’t feel like the tidy, efficient Lidl experience we’re used to.
⏳ Checkout Problems
This is where it really broke down:
Very slow-moving queues
Self-checkout wasn’t any quicker
Our queue had a technical issue with an item that took 5–10 minutes to resolve
Staff communication (even with headsets) didn’t seem effective
In today’s world, you’d expect these issues to be handled much more smoothly.
🤔 Overall Thoughts
We understand this is a busy central Paris location, and peak times will always be challenging. But:
The number of people inside felt unmanaged
The experience became unpleasant and inefficient
It may benefit from some kind of capacity control or better queue management
⭐ Final Verdict
We’ve had great experiences with Lidl elsewhere, but this one unfortunately didn’t live up to expectations on either visit.
A frustrating and overcrowded experience – 2 stars ⭐⭐☆☆☆

This is what we have right in front of our door/building on a regular basis - LIDL delivery products take place from an entry at rue du faubourg Saint Martin. Big containers block the street, packages, boxes and other materials block the side walk, all making it highly dangerous. We people/families living in the same building (entries at 8 Boulevard de Strasbourg and 17, rue du Faubourg Saint Martin) are frequently blocked to get in or out due to the amount of stuff and garbage. Neighbors on the area both private and professional complaint on a regular basis and are willing to a formal complaint to be sent to join the city hall of the 10th district and ask to take due measures to stop this bloodshed. Moreover, the façade of LIDLs technical entrance to groceries (17 rue du Faubourg Saint Martin) is completely destroyed and do not comply to urban rules (the building is classified as art deco). More pictures and comments will follow until LIDL reacts to this.

Not as cheap as you’d expect given the quality vs other higher quality places in the area. Shop is pure chaos, but thankfully there are self service machines 💚
Shockingly this place sells no water but a huge amount of sugary garbage.
Poor choice for vegans and the shop isn’t that big at all.

Lidl is a solid, reliable store for everyday and on-the-go items.
When we travel, we like stopping into Lidl to see how locals shop, and it never disappoints. There’s a wide selection and very good variety of products, making it easy to pick up snacks, basics, and quick meals.
It’s practical, efficient, and consistently good value. A dependable option whether you’re stocking up or just grabbing a few essentials.

I went there between 5:00 and 6:00 p.m., it was a bit of a mess. Very busy, you could barely move around inside. The prices are fair but the difficulty in making purchases is real.

Shelves empty, fruit mouldy, self checkout machines all broken. This place looks like it's ready to close down.

Staff was able and polite. Store was well stocked with food items and drinks. Short walk from the Louvre. Definitely a good place to go

It has all of the basic items you need. The coffee vending machine was not working for me, and a female employee was very sweet and kind to help me get my double espresso.

BE CAREFUL!! On two separate occasions they charged us extra for an item we didn’t have. Make sure you ask for a receipt that has all the purchased items listed and double check it.

Tips for Navigating Parisian Supermarkets
Shopping for groceries in Paris operates under a slightly different set of social rules and practical realities compared to other major cities. Understanding these nuances will save you time, money, and potential embarrassment at the checkout counter. Here is how to shop like a true local.
1). Bring your own bags and weigh your produce
Plastic bags are largely a thing of the past in France, and while reusable bags are sold at the register, bringing your own is cheaper and more sustainable. In the produce section, you must weigh and label your fruits and vegetables using the provided scales before heading to the cashier; forgetting this step often means a delayed transaction and a frustrated line behind you.
2). Do not expect to rely on a car
Most Parisian supermarkets are designed for pedestrians. Many locals use rolling shopping carts (chariots de course) or sturdy tote bags to carry groceries home. If you are driving, be aware that underground parking is often tight and paid; the metro or a short walk is usually the most efficient way to shop.
3). Check the “Drive” and delivery options
Traffic and crowded aisles can make shopping feel like a chore. Most major chains, including Monoprix and Carrefour, offer robust home delivery or click-and-collect services. For a small fee, you can order online and have heavy items like water, milk, and canned goods delivered directly to your apartment door, often on the same day.
4). Understand the pricing structure
Prices can vary wildly depending on the arrondissement. A supermarket in a wealthy area or near a tourist hub will often price identical items higher than a branch in a residential neighborhood. Look for “prix bloqués” (locked prices) or discount banners like Lidl and Aldi if you are cooking on a strict budget.
5). Respect the checkout pace
Parisian cashiers do not rush. It is considered polite to greet the cashier with a “Bonjour” and to organize your items on the belt with the barcode facing down. You are expected to bag your own groceries quickly and efficiently, as the next customer’s items will arrive immediately after yours.
6). Look for the “Fait Maison” and regional labels
If you want to bring home a taste of France, look beyond the standard brands. Many supermarkets feature a dedicated aisle for regional products, such as Breton salted butter, Provençal tapenades, or Alsatian wines. The “Fait Maison” label indicates items prepared in-store, which are often fresher than pre-packaged alternatives.
Finding your preferred supermarket in Paris is often a process of trial and error, but the reward is a deeper connection to the rhythm of the city. The right store becomes more than just a place to buy milk; it becomes a part of your weekly routine, a place where you discover a new cheese or a perfect baguette.
Whether you are planning a lavish dinner party or simply need a quick snack before heading to the Louvre, these markets provide the foundation for an authentic Parisian lifestyle. Bon appétit and happy shopping.
