There is a particular magic to seeing Aix-en-Provence from above. As the golden light of the South of France washes over terracotta rooftops and the distant silhouette of Mont Sainte-Victoire, the city’s rhythm slows to a gentle hum.
While the cobblestone streets and bustling markets offer their own charm, the true essence of Aix is best appreciated from an elevated terrace. Here, the clinking of glasses mingles with the scent of lavender and fresh espresso.
Aix-en-Provence may be steeped in history, but its culinary scene is wonderfully modern and vibrant. The city has embraced the rooftop culture, offering everything from chic cocktail lounges to laid-back coffee spots.
For locals and travelers alike, these elevated escapes provide a sanctuary from the summer heat and the crowds of the Cours Mirabeau. They are places to see and be seen, to work remotely, or simply to watch the sunset paint the sky.
Whether you are seeking a crisp rosé, a specialty flat white, or a decadent pastry with a view, the city delivers. We have curated a list of the most exceptional elevated terraces that capture the Provençal spirit.
From hidden garden terraces to panoramic hotel bars, this guide highlights the spots that offer more than just a meal. These are the destinations where the atmosphere, the view, and the flavors combine to create an unforgettable memory.

Great cocktails with a sunset view

I regularly eat lunch here and it's always a treat. The setting is magnificent with a superb, unobstructed view of the Eguilles countryside. The menu changes often, the dishes are varied, and the daily specials are excellent 😋
Going there in the evening offers a completely different atmosphere, very pleasant with platters and tapas to share, plus amazing sunsets!
I highly recommend it!!

A really lovely place. The portions are generous. A beautiful terrace overlooking the Eiguilles hills. The waitress is very charming and helpful, and the cocktails are excellent too.
I highly recommend this establishment. ✌🏼

Recently opened rooftop bar. Very friendly staff, tasty food, very good cocktails, great value for money! What more could you ask for?
The homemade tortilla chips are definitely recommended!
Worth a try. A 5-minute walk from bus line 220.
Ample parking available.
The view is very beautiful in certain directions. Of course, it is located in an industrial zone, so on the other side you do see buildings. But this certainly doesn't bother you.

Great! The food is excellent, the staff is fantastic, and the setting is exceptional and beautifully decorated! Every lunchtime, there's a new dish; it's fresh, delicious, and reasonably priced. I highly recommend it.

So, just cane for a drink, so I cannot judge the food, but hear me out on visiting tho place. I look forward to hopefully visiting again before I leave as I have two more days to sample the food and enjoy their wonderful, subtle service.
I came in on the later side for a drink. Mr Homoe (I hope I am spelling that correctly) my server responded to my terrible French intro and gave me a seat for drink and took my order. In less than 3 minutes I had my drink.
He was quick in helping others while also fixing tables from departing guests but not losing site of customers, as I had seen other places focus on table fixing rather than guests as their priority.
I poured some sparkling water into my vodka and spilled a bit on the table and it got on my pad I was doodling on and didn’t have a napkin.
I said nothing. I made no motion for a server to help me. But my man noticed my plight and made contact with my eyes and said “I got you”. 30 seconds later I had my napkins, and continued my enamored experience.
Also the place has unique candle lighting in glass tubes that still ooze out the wax as it melts! I felt that was such a unique touch to the place where I had only experienced the rechargeable lamps that are so common now a days everywhere in every county!
Give this place a shot. At least at night. I loved finishing it off there immensely!

Had lunch. Only unfortunate thing market was breaking down and truck pulled up and blocked view. Sit inside if around time of breakdown. Had calamari and it was great. Good waiter. Friendly staff. English speaking.
Lisa B.★★★★☆
Good food and service. I had a great avocado salad, chicken cutlets pounded thin & seared, plus and French fries, which the waiter insisted I try in France! They were good, but not crispy like those at home. It’s located right on the town’s central avenue, so it’s an awesome place to people watch. Almost all the seating is outdoors and many of the patrons were smoking, something I realize is done in France but not done at home. I don’t care for that.
Cecilia★★★★★
Nice spot for people watching. Food was good, service was attentive.
The only downside was people smoking all the time, but this is France and happens in all the places. I would love to have an outside area for non-smokers, specially if you have kids

Great atmosphere overlooking the square. Beautiful setting. Friendly staff offering recommendations for food options and wine pairings. Accommodating to vegans. Would recommend.

I came with friends who had children, and we had to wait over an hour for our food. My meal was just okay. The service was slow and unpleasant. Three of us ordered the burger from the menu; mine arrived with a badly cooked, crumbly bun and a steak that wasn't rare at all.
The music was far too loud for a restaurant.

My second visit here and I was not disappointed. I ordered the Mai Tai which I originally was afraid of ordering because I thought it would be too sweet. However, I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn’t, the drink was well balanced and beautifully presented. Overall I haven’t had the best cocktail experience in France, so I was happy to finally come across a cocktail that is well prepared. My waitress was very nice and attentive. The decor is beautiful, I love the design of the first row of tables. The glassware is top notch. Bathroom was clean and the inside is beautiful. Great experience, I’d return. The drink prices are a bit steep at 12 euros for my drink alone, but we were given a free small board of cheese and prosciutto which was very yummy.
Fiona Rawson★★★★★
Recommend to us by fellow travellers we met, it did not disappoint. The service is impeccable and the food was absolutely delish as was the wine and very reasonably priced. We were also given a digestive chosen by one of the team at the end of our meal which we will be going back for in a cocktail. Thank you for having us!

This was a pleasant surprise. We were led to the garden. Great atmosphere. The food. Delicious. We had Risotto with shrimp. Our friends had avocado toast with poached eggs. Very good. Also our other friends had a BIG cheese burger. Well worth the stop.

Our food was absolutely phenomenal, the drinks were amazing and the ambiance and staff were terrific! This beautiful restaurant was a highlight on our trip to Aix en Provence! Highly recommend! Perfect dinner location. A clearly very popular restaurant and for a reason. We booked a table (a must if you want to go here) and after a short wait we were seated and served quickly. The staff were very friendly and despite us knowing little french were kind and helpful with our ordering. We had a steak and a beef tartar which was incredible. A sommelier gave us a lovely wine recommendation based on our food as well. Would definitely suggest coming here!
Krista Breaux★★★★★
The food was a mixed bag from our group but we all agreed that this place definitely had great atmosphere and the servers were all smiling, friendly, and upbeat. The menu itself had so many great choices it was honestly hard to pick- so many of our favorites. We shared a really tasty foie gras and had the squid entree. While the tops were a little rubbery, the tentacles at the bottom of the dish in the oil and citron sauce were really good. I personally ordered the duck entree and found the fatty pieces to be unusually chewy but I just ended up cutting them off which was fine. I also tried my daughter’s lamb shank which is typically one of my favorite dishes but I found this version a bit too earthy for me. Personal preference perhaps. I did not try the dishes of my other guests. I would still recommend this spot as it had a really great vibe, huge outdoor terrace, and fun staff.
Scott Dickinson★★★★★
We had an excellent dinner at Le Ramus. The veal tomahawk and slow-roasted lamb shank were both great, and the portions were generous. We had a local Château Paradis rosé that went really well with the meal, followed by crème brûlée and mango sorbet. I accidentally left my travel sling behind and when I returned, they had it safe and secure for me. Great food, great service, casual dress and definitely worth a stop in Aix.
Roops★★★★★
Great place in the heart of Aix!
Came here after returning from abroad needing a hearty meal to recuperate. Le Ramus fit the bill!
I arrived at roughly 5:30pm in the afternoon so it was very quiet. I can't therefore comment on the service as you usually know if it's good or bad when the place it packed and you can see how the staff handle the pressure. That being said, the waiter I had was very friendly, spoke French with me even through mine sucked and attended to my needs.
I ordered the panisse, a Marseillaise speciality to start, the lamb shank for main (upon recommendation from the waiter) and the pomme tarte tatin.
All the dishes were perfection and were generous in their portions. My favourite by far was probably the tarte tatin which is the best I've had anywhere ever!! My only small gripe was the Lamb Shank where they charred some herbs sticking out the bone. The smoke ruined the aroma of the dish and some of the ashes went into the sauce which ruined the taste slightly. However, the lamb itself was perfectly cooked and the accompanying elements great.
Whilst a bit on the pricey side and in a very touristy part of town, you can't really go wrong if you want traditional French food. There was a lot on the menu to choose from.
I would recommend this place.
C and M Zimmerman★★★★☆
It’s expensive for what it is but admittedly very good so the 4 rating reflects that you can do better for this price level or just as well for less money. Charming little spot and great service and a lot of choices for the wines. Tarte ration should have been caramelized and chocolate moeulleux was heavy. Daurade fish was very good, perfectly cooked, but expensive for what it was.

Very nice and authentic place in an otherwise quite touristy area. Properly done soft scramble with good seasoning served with incredible sourdough. Pancakes were fluffy and luxurious but not too sweet and very fruit forward. The smoothie was also well balanced. One of the best breakfasts I've had on the go.

I went for breakfast, it was a very hot day, around 10, I was lucky to find a table in shade. In half an hour it got crowded and the service was very slow. The food was ok

We came here after seeing great reviews and we were not let down. The service we experienced for lunch today was warm and welcoming. The server took the time to make sure we understood every ingredient on their menu (for us English speakers). And the food was phenomenal. Clearly fresh, in season, and satisfying dishes. Highly recommended.

The BEST chai latte I have ever had. Everything was spectacular. The chai was creamy with hints of cinnamon, the pear smoothie healed my weary soul, the sourdough bread was perfect, and the pancakes were thick, fluffy, beautifully arranged and delicious with a syrup that was subtly sweet. I only wish I were staying here longer. The cafe was very quiet and had many locals, so it was a nice place to enjoy a peaceful morning and enjoy the start of my day.

We came here two days in a row for breakfast. Not only was the breakfast excellent, but the coffee was definitely a highlight. It’s a wonderful place to enjoy a relaxed breakfast or brunch with friends.
Starting the day with a great cup of coffee is something this place truly offers. We even ended up buying some coffee beans to take home. The service was excellent as well. ☕️✨

I had a delicious brunch and good quality coffee here. They made espresso with Ethiopia single origin coffee and filter coffee with Peru coffee. But maybe type of coffee they use will probably keep changing. so satisfied that I drank every last drop.

Had a wonderful time at KAVA AIX! It’s usually a challenge to find a spot for a large group, but here it was incredibly easy to get a table for all of us. Beautiful location and loved the overall vibe. We ended up going on a night that had a prefix menu and a special event in connection with a local vineyard. The food was hit or miss. They made a wonderful vegetarian appetizer and main course for me. The dessert was not good. My friends had a less than stellar experience with their entire meal. Perhaps going on another night and choosing from the main menu will be a better choice. Luckily I was in great company and the wine and gin tasting were an added bonus.

My wife and I have been vacationing in Spain and France with our adult daughters. They took us to dinner here. The restaurant is in the middle of nowhere. If you like driving on narrow lanes in a foreign language this is the place for you.
Once we found the place it was superb. The menu changes regularly. We had roast pork and the salmon. The pork was for three. I had it and it was superb. It came with whipped potatoes and roasted root vegetables. There was a sauce that was v good to go with it.
For desert i had the cookie with ice cream and a caramel sauce. Others had the chocolate mouse or lemon merengue.
an excellent meal with friendly service. I would eat there regularly if i lived in Provence
Hannah★★★☆☆
This was a disappointing experience all around. We had high hopes as this was recommended by local friends but we had to wait 1 hour to be served our first appetizer followed by another hour just for mains. Atmosphere and location is truly beautiful and most people working there were very friendly but wait time did not help the experience. Food was unfortunately subpar at best - meat was overcooked and the fish did not taste too fresh. 🙁 Hopefully a blip just for the night we were dining in, but wouldnt quite recommend.

Great for coffee lovers, terrible for matcha lovers. The barista was very friendly and nice to talk to. I really wanted to love the matcha, but the quality was bad and it was not prepared properly. Please fix your matcha!

Really great frappe (3,50€). You can choose how much milk and sugar you want (less milk is very similar to a refreshing iced coffee) and if you take away it's served in a nice recyclable cup. They have several other beverages and the employees are very friendly. There wasn't an outside sitting area when we came but we just sat down on the stairs of the church just across. Definitely recommend this place!

Very central, yet no traffic. Great place to sit outside and enjoy a breakfast or brunch. Gets busy around midday, people from offices nearby getting a bite. Very friendly staff, wonderful food. The brunch offer gets you one healthy (yet tasty) dish and something sweet (I do recommend the pancakes here), as well as a hot and a cold drink. Coffee is excellent and the orange juice is fresh. Works great for Veggies.

We had a fantastic evening with friends at 5ème Soleil!
The atmosphere was excellent, with a DJ playing all night. The concept with the tattoo artist on site is cool, although we found the flash designs offered a bit basic and expensive for what they were. As for the food, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The mixed charcuterie and cheese board was really good, and the Gargantuan steak was excellent—super tender and very flavorful. The decor is nothing special, but the staff is really friendly.
In short, we had a great time and we'll definitely be back!
Yves en Provence★★★★★
Today, I got caught in a trap... A colleague suggested we try a restaurant, Le 5ème Soleil in Aix, not far from work.
On the menu, for cooking instructions, it said "Figure it out yourself." On the menu: grilled meats, kebabs, andouillettes, and a whole duck breast (yes, a whole one!!).
We were outside, under a veranda, on artificial turf, sitting around a large barrel. In the center was the grilling area. Everyone took the items for their dish and cooked them to their liking on the grill.
Encouraged by my colleague, I really messed up. I ordered the whole duck breast! I shouldn't have. Right now, at 5:20 pm, I'm still digesting.
As a side, there were unlimited homemade fries and salad (I don't know if that was also unlimited). The fries were delicious.
Everything was really good. As a bonus, the waitress was friendly and the owner came around to check on the customers to make sure everything was going well.

Incredible! We've found a gem for meat lovers and bon vivants. A place that doesn't look like much but packs a punch. The concept is super fun, the meat is absolutely delicious, and the prices are very reasonable, especially at this time of year. The waitress and the owner are lovely and incredibly attentive. If you're looking for a friendly place to enjoy great meat, don't hesitate to go to 5S. You'll receive a very warm welcome. 😊

Practical Tips for Enjoying Rooftop Cafes in Aix
Navigating the rooftop scene in Aix-en-Provence requires a bit of local insight to ensure you get the most out of your visit. While the atmosphere is generally relaxed, the city’s popularity means that the best tables with the best views are often in high demand. Understanding the local customs regarding reservations, timing, and dress codes will significantly enhance your experience, allowing you to blend in seamlessly with the Provençal pace of life.
- Time Your Visit for the Golden Hour: The light in Aix is most spectacular just before sunset. Arrive an hour before the sun goes down to secure a prime spot and watch the transition from day to night, when the city lights begin to twinkle.
- Always Reserve Ahead: Walk-ins are often turned away, especially on weekends and during the summer tourist season. A quick phone call or online booking is essential for popular hotel rooftops and ensures you aren’t left waiting in the lobby.
- Dress Smart Casual: While Aix is generally laid-back, rooftop venues—particularly those attached to luxury hotels—often enforce a smart casual dress code. Leave the beach flip-flops at the hotel and opt for elegant, breathable linen or chic evening wear.
- Be Mindful of the Mistral: The famous Provençal wind can pick up quickly, even on sunny days. If you plan to stay for a few hours, bring a light jacket or scarf, as even a summer evening breeze on a high terrace can feel surprisingly cool.
- Check for "Service Continu": Many traditional French cafes stop serving food between lunch and dinner. If you are looking for a late-afternoon snack, verify that the venue offers "service continu" (continuous service) so you don’t arrive to a kitchen that is closed.
