Sipping a chilled glass of local rosé on a sun-drenched terrace is a quintessential part of the Provençal lifestyle, but the social scene in Aix-en-Provence extends far beyond the region’s famous vineyards. This elegant university town, known for its golden limestone facades and bubbling fountains, hides a vibrant nightlife behind its historic doors.
From hidden speakeasies tucked down cobblestone alleys to bustling brasseries that spill out onto the grand Cours Mirabeau, the city offers a diverse array of drinking establishments. Whether you are a wine connoisseur, a craft beer enthusiast, or a cocktail aficionado, Aix provides a sophisticated backdrop for your evening out.
Navigating the city’s drinking culture is about understanding its rhythm. The "Apéro" is sacred here, typically starting around 6 PM, where the focus is on conversation, light snacks, and quality beverages rather than loud music or rapid consumption.
To help you experience the best of the Aixois nightlife, we have curated a list of venues that capture the essence of the city. We have focused on places that offer exceptional quality, distinct atmospheres, and authentic local character rather than just tourist traps.
Below, you will find the definitive guide to the best places to drink in the capital of Provence. These selections range from historic institutions to modern mixology bars, ensuring there is a perfect spot for every mood and occasion.

This is a legendary, grungy but cool pub. I have been drinking here over three decades and it remains true to it's origins as a quirky, alternative and cool place.
Love this place, the atmosphere, and ambiance.

I don’t know if this place hates tourists or if they’re terrible at math but one has to be true. They attempted to drastically overcharge me whilst trying to cover the price on the card machine that I was tapping on. Avoid at all costs.
Sheba Boris★★☆☆☆
Not sure why there are so many rave reviews about this place. It’s very small, dark and crowded with young student-types but if you’re 20 and don’t mind the bar guys smoking inside right next to your table then it’s the place for you.
Might be better in summer when you get to sit outside with the smokers instead.
Basically if you don’t mind smoke it’s an ok place to have a Guinness .

Nice waitress, 2 big beers (means in countries except Austria 🇦🇹 and Germany 🇩🇪 0.4l 😂😂): 7€
That's really ok!
Tables outside, nice atmosphere, young guests, metal/rock fans. Advisable!

Bar person tried to rip us off. Check what they are charging on the machine before you tap your card. Second time this has happened in the last 24 hours in Aix-en -Provence which is a shame.

I did watch watch the Euro 2024 final in this bar, it was not bad and enjoyed some apple juice. Unfortunately it was not possible to order lunch there as they don’t serve it.

This is one of my favorite spots and I call it my HQ. Always have great ambiance, indoor seating with a couple of screens for sport fans, play darts, wide drink varieties. Outdoor seating under a canopy or by the fountain right in the middle of it all. Great spot to chill 😎

It's a nice bar and a good place to stop for a pint and watch a football match. However, it can get extremely crowded during France matches or even on Weekend nights with students around. If you can find a seat, however, it's a very nice place to have a beer and they do have some tasty options.

Honestly I would give zero if I could.
Worse possible service - this place is just lucky they have a nice location in town and they clearly survive with bad attitude.
We booked a table paying a 75 Euros deposit to find an awful standing table.
We politely asked to change since there were other tables available, but staff was like “no don’t even ask” - refusing to even try to find a solution which - to us, could be possible.
Nice location but bar is just BAD
Libby Lewis★★★★★
Great tapas and drinks - perfect for a light dinner! Our server was so friendly, pleasant and helpful with recommendations for my wine choice. Quintessential French sidewalk experience at dinner time when the work day was over and everyone was out socializing and connecting. A lovely and practical French experience.

Believe the minus 3 star reviews. We paid 75 euros for 3 seats for a soccer match and were told to come at 7:30pm to get good seats for a 9pm match… got there at 7:30 and see that we have the only high table with stool seats with a piss poor view of 1 screen tv…. I requested a regular table as the place was empty but was told no… Why the hell do you tell me to come early for a better table?!! Poor communication and poor service. Had to raise my voice to get my money back and left. Went to Le Mignet bar and the team there were so nice and kind and got us a table. Beware of this place… don’t go. The neighbor bar cocoron has better vibes and service too.

We went there on a Saturday evening around 10pm. The bouncer did let us in easily. As we entered we decided after less than 1 minute to leave, because it was a very young crowd partying on very mainstream music decades ago. As we left, the bouncer asked us if we saw the bar downstairs. He was very friendly and guided us the way to get there. So downstairs there is a very nice and cozy bar, where there is no loud music playing. We had two rum for in total 32 €. You should be aware about the prices, but the rum was really good. We had a nice evening in the end.

I knew barracuda would be good when I first saw the blood running down the street outside in September. After that, it became an inside joke for my friends and I. In the past couple months we’ve started going for happy hour (buy one get one cocktails), and I can’t recommend the Jack Danny Sparrow enough! Easily one of the best cocktails I’ve had and happy hour makes it affordable. Not to mention we like to go to Tortuga sometimes😉 We love taking Snapchats on the tablet out front. We’ve carved our names into the bathroom door with a key. My friend smoked a cigarette inside the bar and nobody cared! And all my friends have matching Barracuda shot glasses because they are so easy to steal from over the bar. Basically, it’s a wonderful haven of freedom and chaos. I thrive off of the energy this place exudes. What can I say? We just loveeeee Barracuda! America needs to take notes because Barracuda is the best and most chaotic bar in the world🏴☠️🐟🍻

Absolutely terrible !
The staff is mediocre, the drinks are nothing special and expensive but the worst part are the people.
Although the bar is gay friendly , the people there are very unfriendly to English speakers.
There is an annoying atmosphere at the bar.
I’m never going there again and if there is another option to go to, don’t hesitate to skip this bar

Finally, a real beer bar in Aix-en-Provence! Great atmosphere, chill, relaxed. It's a must-do in Aix. We've been waiting 40 years for a beer bar like this in Aix. Go without hesitation, the food is fantastic. Forget the cheap tapas you find everywhere else. It's cooked, it's carefully prepared, it's delicious. They also host great events.

Great place to come and relax for amazing service and great food. The burgers are amazing and the location is perfect. Only thing that would make this even better is if they took American Express for American travelers in the area. But for sure it’s a must if you are in Aix!

Best fish sandwich in Aix. Delicious fresh fish perfectly cooked with fresh ingredients and real cheddar & delicious bun. The side potatoes were delicious also and change from usual fries. This is not a tourist spot, the burger cook is very talented I saw the other creative burgers prepared and they looked phenomenal. Look at the extensive burger options offered for all tastes. Place is loaded with locals at lunch. They have an extensive menu of creative burgers. Very nice and efficient service. Wonderful outdoor patio great for people and trend watching. What’s a la mode today? Just grab a burger and enjoy the scenery! Meilleur sandwich poisson d’Aix. Menu extensif avec des burgers élaborés et créatifs. Service très professionnel et sympathique. Très belle terrasse pour observer les tendances actuelles. Restaurant rempli de locaux à midi, pas du tout touristique comme beaucoup d’endroits à Aix. Go fish!

We ate here last night and had an amazing time. The gentleman who served us was awesome. We do not speak French and he was very accommodating. I decided I would come back each day for the remainder of my trip. I returned today, without my husband, and was treated so rudely by the person there, not the gentleman from last night. I was simply asking what time they opened and he was gruff and apparently annoyed by my presence as he waived me off shouting we are closed. Saying he spoke no English, which could be true but unlikely. He and the man at the business next door went on to their conversation and cigarette smoking as if my question didn’t deserve an answer. How do you have an entire restaurant that is American themed and your attitude towards Americans is so poor. I’m pretty positive it’s just this particular person. He ruined a place that was going to be a stop on every trip to Aix. I don’t come all the way here to be treated as if I am not welcome. I reluctantly went to Five Guys instead.

Terrible service. A guy who has long (shoulders )hair is always touching his hair when he arrives are your table. He has this terrible expression on his face that tells you that he doesn't want you there. He seems disgusted, just tired at seeing you there. Then you ask him something and he doesn't seem to copy you. He just leaves comes later and asks again what you asked for. He brings the things cold and doesn't seems tocare. His whole attitude screams he doesn't want to serve.you. He Took away my fries while I was talking my hand looking desperately for my fires🤣and I hadn't finished. I went to the manager, she seemed understanding but hey not really. she brought me a bunch of COLD fries that seem collected from the rest of other plates. Voilà your review. I work in the industry and I know how awful clients can be, but hey, you need ethics to work there. My table didn't deserve tour treatment. Why do you work in customer service when you cannot stand people?
Elif Canfezâ Gündüz★★★★★
It's a very cozy place with great service and atmosphere. I love mussels and potatoes dish. Since mussels are not cooked this way in the country I live in, I always eat mussels when I travel. I have nothing to say about taste. It was very delicious. But half of the mussels were broken and I had to eat the shells of some of them. It would be good for them to pay attention to this. The waiter was incredibly sweet, positive and caring. I'll come again next week.

They could wait until i get the money and then serve me.

What a discovery! Visiting Aix-en-Provence 34 years after meeting there as students thanks to the Erasmus European scheme, we are delighted we decided to have a drink at the Novo yesterday, around 6:30pm. First of all, we spotted the Happy Hour, then we were greeted by Albert, so kind, charming and dynamic. We enjoyed Provence wine and delicious tapenade. We're back today! We have had apricot beer, rosé and red wine, delicious and copious tapas (beef tagliata, calamari and Marseille panisse with pesto) and are now considering dessert... Bravo, Le Novo!!!

Tried out this venue for lunch and were positively surprised
The restaurant offers indoor and outdoor terrace seating options.
Welcome was friendly and service efficient
From the menu we selected a salmon tartare with french fries and a slow cooked bull (the past one available that day....due to high demand!) and both dishes were delicious.
Definitely a venue recommended to those after a great bistro style meal at great value for money in a relaxed setting right in the heart of Aix en Provence

Such an amazing meal here. They accommodated us without a reservation and late in the evening. The steak was incredible and the Bordeaux was to die for. I wish I would’ve taken a photo of the bottle or written down the name. Service was top-notch will definitely go back.

I went there for lunch by myself. I did have to wait awhile for a server (that’s fine, that seems to be everywhere). Once served my drink, while waiting for my food, I noticed that all other tables that ordered food were given a tablecloth and silverware. (This is also typical if you order more than drinks in the cafes here)
I was not given a tablecloth and the silverware was place on a dirty table. Once food was served, I noticed that every table was also given bread, I was not. It felt very awkward sitting in between other tables (that are very close together) to be the only one treated differently. It felt very clearly because I am not French and perhaps because I am American. I was very upset to be treated less than everyone else. I do not recommend going there unless you are French.

Good variety of food, great ambiance! The restaurant offers a nice selection of dishes, including some vegetarian options. The outdoor seating is lovely, and the service is relatively fast. The mocktails were delicious! Would definitely recommend.

We heard a lot about this restaurant and decided to try it so we finally did on Tuesday afternoon for lunch. The food, their beef tartare is one of the best I’ve ever had. Thank you!

We dined on Halloween and the staff had all entered in to the spirit of the evening. Great cocktails, aperol spritz was good and the mojito was excellent. We had fillet de boeuf and chicken tagine. Great outside seating area next to the fountain and a quirky fun indoor decor. Unfortunately we had higher expectations of the food given it’s Google rating. Burger was just “good”, the entrecôte was so chewy that the person that ordered it chose to eat only half, and the cordon bleu was incredibly small even for European standards - and just ‘okay’. The non-alcoholic drinks were very tasty though - Pimp My Beer and Mojito.
Sam Cryer★★★★★
Went here for an early dinner and had the 1.2kg cote de beouf. The whole meal was sublime. The meat was very high quality, great marbling, expertly cooked to perfection and so flavourful. The three sauces alongside (pepper, gravy, BBQ) were unctuous and made for perfect dipping. The fries were crisp and the vegetables simple but nicely cooked too. Service was super friendly and accommodating. Couldn’t recommend highly enough.

Highly recommend ordering from the Signature Menu for top options of an appetizer, entree, and dessert. Get the chicken cordon bleu, is a fantastic preparation, WOW! Atmosphere on patio was lovely. Inside is very much a “in the club” vibe for those wanting flashing lights and loud music during their meal.
Javier Troncoso★★★★★
The three-course menu was delicious but it felt like simply too much food! After an excellent entree and salmon tartar, I am greeted with by far the biggest tiramisu dessert I’ve seen. I can only complain about my own inability to finish such a delicious dessert.
My only recommendation is to not get the menu and instead choose only two out of the three courses. Other than that, excellent food, service and decoration! Super friendly staff.
H P (Phlash)★★★★☆
The staff and the ambiance were lovely. Their patio in the plaza was great on a warm evening.
We ordered the arranchini, which was great. And the milk flower ice cream and the berry panna cotta was delicious.
Be sure to ask for the by-the-glass menu if you don’t want a bottle.
I ordered the Entercôte with bernaise sauce, I’m not sure what type of cut I was served but it was not good. It was a mangled mess that I had to dissect off the fat and tendons to find the meat. The tartar was “okay” per my friend.

Mary Feiz★★★★★
place open late,
arriving tired from Monaco as the night grew quiet.
cozy that felt less like a restaurant
and more like home.
The French chef welcomed us with kindness,
serving not just food, but care.
Cannelloni, tender meat,
each dish speaking softly of comfort and craft.
tiramisu,
the perfect ending, light and sweet,
a gentle pause before the night closed.
A late-hour gift,
where generosity, flavor, and warmth met beautifully.

Tips for Enjoying the Bar Scene in Aix-en-Provence
To make the most of your evening in Aix, it helps to understand the local customs and logistics. While the city is welcoming, a little insider knowledge can transform a good night out into a truly memorable Provençal experience. Here are some practical tips to help you navigate the scene like a local.
Embrace the Apéro Hour
The French concept of "l’apéro" is the golden hour of drinking. Most bars offer discounted prices or specials on drinks between 5 PM and 7 PM. This is the best time to secure a prime spot on a terrace, as seating fills up quickly once the offices close.
Check for Seasonal Closures
Aix-en-Provence is a student town, and the rhythm of the city changes drastically with the academic calendar. Many bars close for several weeks in August when the students and locals flee the heat. If visiting in late summer, always call ahead or check social media to confirm a venue is open.
Dress the Part
While Aix is generally relaxed, it is a distinctly chic city. Flip-flops and beachwear are rarely seen in the evening bars, especially in the Quartier Mazarin or on the Cours Mirabeau. Opting for "smart casual" attire will ensure you blend in seamlessly with the stylish local crowd.
Explore Beyond the Cours Mirabeau
While the main boulevard is beautiful, the prices here often reflect the view rather than the quality of the drink. Venture into the narrow streets of the Old Town (Vieil Aix), particularly around the Place des Cardeurs or Rue de la Verrerie, to find hidden gems with more character and better value.
Don’t Skip the Wine Bars
You are in Provence, so while cocktails are trendy, the true expertise lies in wine. Don’t be afraid to ask the sommelier or bartender for a recommendation based on your taste preferences. They often have access to small-batch local vineyards that never make it onto international export lists.
As the evening winds down, you will find that the true magic of Aix-en-Provence lies not in loud, flashy venues, but in the art of lingering. The joy of a night out here is found in the conversation between friends, the clinking of glasses on a historic square, and the warm breeze that carries the scent of lavender and plane trees.
Whether you spent your night tasting natural wines in a cozy cellar or sipping a perfectly balanced cocktail under the stars, Aix offers an intimacy that is rare in modern nightlife. It is a city that invites you to slow down, savor the moment, and drink in the history that surrounds you.
