15 Best Affordable Restaurants in Avignon

Dining out in Avignon does not have to drain your travel budget. While the city boasts a rich gastronomic heritage rooted in Provençal traditions, it is also incredibly welcoming to travelers seeking value. The key is knowing where locals go to enjoy generous portions, fresh market ingredients, and authentic atmosphere without the premium price tag attached to tourist hotspots.

Many visitors assume that affordable means sacrificing quality or settling for fast food, but that is far from the truth here. Avignon is home to a vibrant scene of bistros, couscous restaurants, and family-run eateries where the focus is on honest cooking. These establishments often offer fixed-price lunch menus, known as "formules," that provide exceptional value for a multi-course meal.

The culinary landscape of Avignon is heavily influenced by the surrounding Rhône Valley and the Mediterranean. You can expect to find dishes rich in olive oil, fresh herbs, and seasonal vegetables. From hearty daubes (Provençal stew) to fresh seafood and North African specialties, the diversity of the cuisine means there is an affordable option for every palate.

Navigating the cobblestone streets, especially around the Place Pie or the Rue des Teinturiers, reveals hidden gems tucked away from the main squares. These quieter streets often house the best budget-friendly kitchens, where the rent is lower and the focus is purely on the food. Eating affordably here is about exploring the side streets and following the aroma of garlic and rosemary.

To help you experience the authentic flavors of Provence without overspending, we have curated a list of the best value-driven dining spots in the city. This selection focuses on restaurants that deliver consistent quality, welcoming service, and a true sense of place, all while keeping prices accessible for everyday dining.

Whether you are looking for a quick savory crêpe, a slow-braised tagine, or a classic steak frites, Avignon has a table waiting for you. Here are the best affordable restaurants in Avignon to satisfy your hunger and your wallet.

It was excellent in every way. I love the vintage style Every table is personalized with love. The owner cooks herself. Very very delicious! She and her mom serve with LOVE - thank you for the exceptional welcome!

This was an incredible experience! We were warmly invited to sit, encouraged to enjoy the sun, and informed of options that were available but weren’t on the menu. Our host was so kind and lovely, as well as especially patient and helpful as we practiced our French, all while taking excellent care of us. The food was fantastic and we were thrilled at the atmosphere of sitting outside, watching people interact, and enjoying the perfect Provençal day! Many thanks to Chez Nine. 💙

Even with an injured knee, you came to cook for strangers. we have gone to many fancy places eat but this is the first real home cooked we have had since arriving. We are glad to have found this place. thank you so much!

We had a great lunch at Chez Nine. It’s small, quirky and cozy. It was a bit crowded but they made sure to accommodate our group of 5. I ordered the Planche Nine and it was super tasty! In addition, I would like to highlight their help and flexibility to ensure our friend with milk protein allergy also had a great meal! Definitely recommend!
Mark Mc Laughlin★★★★★
Chez Nine is the type of local restaurant you always dream to find when visiting a new town. The food is like eating in a chef's home kitchen with everything cooked from scratch and the menu changes daily. Nine and her mum couldn't have been more kind. We had the best salad with local and fresh ingredients, incredible omelette and our daughter had a french style pizza that she loved. If coming from the main train station avoid the touristy restaurants before Palais des Papes and take a right and is a 2-3 minute walk. Nine and her mum gave us the best tip to go the jardins and then up on to the hill with the best view of the city and the Pont d'Avignon. Couldn't recommend this restaurant highly enough and can't wait to go back.

Excellent atmosphere and food! Very friendly staff and welcoming to all. The owner Steven, is a true gentlemen and welcomed us even though we are just learning French. Steven and his staff speak some English and are very helpful. Fantastic restaurant in a beautiful village.
Ilaria Varenna★★★★★
We had lunch here. The food is amazing and topically French. Amazing dessert and a nice service The French atmosphere is wonderful and the location too A place to visit again in the future!
Rob Tulloh★★★★★
Stopped here for a light dinner after heavy lunch earlier in the day. They had a nice selection of salads which were the perfect choice for us.
Aleksandra Danilina★★★★★
One of the few places where you can have lunch past 14:00 😅 The food was very delicious, and the staff is very welcoming
Josh★★★★★
This was our most reliably enjoyable restaurant while in Avignon. I loved their salmon toasty, soup, aperitifs, and many desserts, especially the caramel cake. The restaurant has a 1940s interior, two dining rooms of several tables each, and a few more tables on a tree shaded square across the street. The staff are warm and friendly. The hours are more accessable than most nearby restaurants. We ended up coming back here frequently for snacks between meals or for dessert after others.

This is the best food I’ve had in France so far. We started with the falafel and hummus appetizer, which was outstanding. I ordered the steak tartare—fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with high-quality ingredients. My wife and daughter had the chicken pita plate, and both finished everything on their plates. The service was excellent, and the owner was incredibly friendly—he even treated me to a beer.
Maria K-W 84★★★★★
We found this little spot on a quiet side street in Avignon, and it felt like stepping out of the city noise for a bit. The owner made it feel personal from the moment we walked up to it The owner was super nice and actually wanted us to enjoy our evening. We had the shakshouka and beef tartare, and both were better than we expected, rich in flavor and honestly almost too generous to finish. Portions didn’t feel skimpy or pretentious, just the right kind of plentiful. You could talk without shouting, which doesn’t happen enough when you’re eating out. It’s the kind of place that sticks with you because of how it made you feel, not just what you ate. If we were staying longer in Avignon, we’d go back without thinking twice.
aimeecolcomb★★★★★
The reviews are definitely accurate and the food, atmosphere and owners live up to the hype. Everything was incredible! Salem (owner) was so kind and even wrote us a list of places to visit for the rest of our time in France. Such a great experience and if we had more time in Avignon we would 100% come back again. Thank you from two very happy & full Canadians 🇨🇦🍁!
Fabiana Jikal★★★★★
We never expected the food to be this good. My kids, my husband and I all thought this was by far the best restaurant we ate in all of our vacation. When we came at first the attendant was very kind and even gave us tips for where to go! He was very friendly to my kids and even gave us some cold beverages because of the hot temperatures! We would like to go there again! Very recommended!!
Ellen Hepburn★★★★★
We had an incredible experience at this restaurant! The hospitality and kindness shown to us was amazing alongside the absolutely stunning food! We were spoilt for choice with the menu but everything we picked was incredible. We would highly recommend this restaurant as the perfect lunch stop on a trip to Avignon.

The menu and the place seem to be very chic and special but behind it was a disappointing experience. The salad was a collection of vegetables not mixed together. In general the portions were small with huge dishes. The menu didn’t have many options and the prices were definitely high for what the food reflected. The dessert was interesting but disappointing. Felt like mousse with Nutella and not tiramisu. We didn’t finish it. Not coming back.
Regan Olsson★★★★★
We made reservations here for our wedding anniversary. It was a wonderful evening. The goat cheese salad was so delicious - I would come back for just that alone. I enjoyed the truffle risotto and my husband had the fish of the day which was salmon. Then we topped off with the dessert sampler. All paired with a delicious red wine. Highly recommend.
Stu Oleson★★★★★
Very friendly service and tasty food! Took in a couple travel weary Americans with no reservations and minimal French and provided us a very yummy meal and desserts! Fun, laid back atmosphere that's equally appropriate for a date or group of friends or a family dinner.
Karen Koopman★★★★★
Wow! What a cook!! We had a fantastic dinner. Great flavours, nice decorated plates an d very friendly service. They do speak enough English to communicate. Can advise to go for a nice dinner!! And very reasonable price Sorry we only took a picture of our dessert 😋

The service was friendly, knowledgeable, and very welcoming. My husband has the pureed butternut squash with hazelnut soup had a delicious stock with a well seasoned squash. I had the veal steak with a mushroom sauce was perfectly seared and served with a buttery polenta and roasted squash. The server recommended the perfect glass of wine to pair with each dish. Definitely a restaurant you'll enjoy.

Gorgeous cafe with classy/delicious food - the entree of asparagus the best I have ever had and the plat de jour - rigatoni with spring vegetables - peas, more asparagus PERFECT - with the rigatoni al dente. Followed by the clafoutis - fresh summer fruit - magnificent - highly recommend here for lunch and will be back

The best salmon tartine! Fresh, generous amount of salmon, love the cream cheese and sprinkles of black pepper that compliment the salmon

Came here as the reviews are great. Meet my expectations. The lady in the front manage very well during the busy hours. The menu- La complete with the avocado toast was super, made me tres full. Good vide in a quiet corner of the city.

The food was great. We went there for breakfast and we really liked it. The place is very cozy and the service was great. They served our food quickly and it was delicious. Definitely saving this place in case we visit Avignon again.

Amazing hidden little gem in Avignon . Since we discovered this place we did not go to another breakfast place . Everything is fresh and tasty from the smoothies to the avocados and I can’t even describe the bacon. Prices are also very reasonable for the quality . Definitely one of our favourite place in Avignon .

Best location, best food, best service. Our group of seven had every plate and each house wine. Lovely and tasty. I especially enjoyed the duck. Find this place and go.

A hidden gem, not to be missed when visiting Avignon! All our dishes prepared in perfection with reasonable price❣️. Lovely intimate setting right next to Saint Pierre church🤩
Rong Mao★★★★☆
A cute, rustic little French restaurant in the middle of a small square next to the old St Peter’s cathedral in Avignon’s old town, only a few minutes’ walk from the Pope’s Palace. Service was very friendly. The food was Excellent. We had the L'Épicerie plate, which was a surprisingly filling salad with various little dishes to sample, and the steak with potato gratin and vegetables, both very good. The cheesecake dessert was artfully plated and also very good. Overall a great place to eat when visiting Avignon.
Bela Pentek★★★★★
Enjoyed a lovely dinner here a few weeks ago (8 June) as we sat in a peaceful courtyard in front of the Basilica St. Pierre. Even though we did not have a reservation (and the place was nearly full), the owner graciously arranged a nice table for 2. Our dinners, from a small focused menu, were fresh, flavorful, thoughtfully presented, and of course...delicious. Paired with a nice bottle of chardonnay simply added to a delightful evening. Highly recommend having dinner at this gem. You will not be disappointed. Reservations recommended.
Enrico★★★★☆
Atmosphere is great, we had our dinner outdoor just in front of the church facade. Service is quick and kind. The food is good, well served. I had higher expectations on the quality and the available choices that I found a bit limited. All in all a great place to be to live the Avignon scene.

Went here for lunch in September. We did not understand the current high rating. Food was mediocre at best, service was cute but with lots of flaws (wrong orders, slow, out of many of the desserts at 1pm). Terrace on the street next to garbage bins.

Best meal I’ve had in France. Not even exaggerating. Please do yourself a favor and eat here!
Stamatia Zavitsanou★★★★☆
Very limited opinions in terms of food. In 3 main options there were two tartare. Unfortunately a pregnant woman cannot eat here. The burger was very very good but seriously undercooked for a well done. The fries accompanying the meals were bad. You can do better
Jean L★★★★★
Their frog legs special was garlicky, buttery, and truly…special (no pun intended)! Wine list was small but exceptional. Menu was also small and seasonal, which is always a good sign. I love that every plate, including the kids’, came with a very fresh, robust salad with light dressing. Service was very kind and friendly.
Ruby Goldberg★★★★★
Without a doubt one of the best meals of our visit! There is a small team and they were so welcoming and lovely. The chicken burger and pasta were both phenomenal, and they had wonderful options for wine from the region. We loved it so much we went back twice during our visit. A fantastic lovely restaurant!!!!
Elizabeth Genois★★★★★
We came on our first night to Avignon and were blown away. An intimate restaurant with a small staff that has perfected every item on their menu. Local and fresh ingredients highlighting culinary excellence. I’ll never enjoy another burger quite like this one. Quick service and every dish made on the spot. Fun to watch them prepare while you wait! So many tourist traps right on the square- wander over here, and you will not regret it!

Food was good, especially beef and frog legs, and desserts were excellent. Aside from that, it was a terrible experience: we were treated with indifference, and the owner put his fingers in his ear while taking orders. Overall, I don’t recommend it due to their bad manners.
Charlie Liu★★★★★
What a lovely meal! We tried several French classics — escargots, frog legs, and duck terrine to start, followed by hanger steak and veal liver for mains. Everything was cooked perfectly and full of flavor. The liver was very tender, and the red wine sauce is really tasty. I dip the bread with the sauce. The steak juicy and well seasoned, but some part is a little bit hard to bite. Both came with fries. The escargots and frog legs were especially fun to try — rich, garlicky, and so satisfying. The vibe of the place is super cozy and welcoming — relaxed, but with heart. It really feels like a place locals go to enjoy comfort food done right. Service was friendly, and the pacing of the meal was just right. Would definitely come back for another comforting French dinner if I stay longer. Plus the price is quite reasonable!
Julia Dixon★★★★★
Great meal - very busy so book a table as the waiter was turning people away most of the night! Nice setting by the church. Three course set menu was good value. Nice quality wine list too. Waiter is charming and speaks excellent English!
fleur★★★★★
ChatGPT recommended me this place, and it was lovely. Just perfect. The food tasted so well! Passionate people as well. When it became busy, I offered to eat my dessert later/somewhere else (coz I was with one on the table), but the owner said: no no, please take your time. Also, it’s situated next to a church, nice authentic environment.

We came here for a meal after sightseeing in Avignon. The food and service were fantastic! We had the friendliest waitress who gave us lots of good tips on museums, and generally was just such a delight! Food was great and just what we wanted - great beef and vegetarian burgers for a good price. Overall, fantastic!

Quite literally one of the best dining experiences we had during our two weeks in Europe. The burgers were so good. Crispy fries. Chicken salad was fresh and flavorful. Exceptional service and hospitality!! I hope you have the same experience as we did.

We went there for lunch. 0 waiting time. The first waiter didn’t speak English and didn’t bother trying and was quite rude. The second one was much nicer and try to speak with us in English. We had 2 steak that came with unlimited fries and salad. The beef was very good and the paradise sauce is also tasty. The bill came out at 56 euro. Not too bad for tourist centric place in the middle of Avignon
Kelly Olson★★★★★
Very tasty and good value! Bottomless French fries and a very awesome top sirloin, cooked just right (rare for me) and a Paradis sauce that was really wonderful! The sauce was very buttery with just a hint of mustard and a delicious portion of herbs! The Rossini with foie gras and a brown delicious sauce was also amazing!!! Great English is also spoken making it an easy place to enjoy a meal, a 1/2 liter of wine with locals speaking French all around. We were afraid it would be too touristy, but I don’t think it was! The nearby tabacc sells stamps for their postcards 👍!
Matej Kukučka★★★★★
By far the best restaurant we have visited in Avignon. Steak was amazing, as was the desert. And what stood out was the service provided by the owner himself, outstanding!
Michelle Tan★★★★★
Nice mains. I like the fries, but too much for one pax. This plate of fries looks more like it's for 2 pax or a group as it's a standard plate size. Like the location and environment. Outdoor sitting is under a huge tree, so even in a summer, it's not too hot.
Poh Howyuin★★★★★
Service was excellent! The family loves the food and service of the staffs 😉 they were really friendly. The food were good too, set menu is a must order especially for the beef. Free flow homemade fries were a hit with the kids!

Best gluten free choices for both starters, main courses, and desserts in Avignon. They are reasonably priced in contrast to the restaurants in the area. The food is delicious and a great place for vegetarians and those who have to, or prefer to, eat gluten free. I highly recommend it.

Healthy, hearty meals served by friendly staff in the city center of Avignon. Feel like home there when travelling. Highly recommended.

Very very friendly service, helpful, understands also English. Cool and modern concept. The lasagne was good, with a bit too much bechamel sauce. The tables are very simple. Nice to have portions without gluten, good sized portions for a good price. Can recommend!

Great concept. You simply pick the courses you want direct out of the fridge. If warming is needed the waiter heats it for you. Great, as in G R E A T value for money. Best glutenfree place for me till date, and I am not the person looking for glutenfree, but my partner. However I found it great without any reservations. Bravo.

Incredible flavor, especially the eggplant parmesan, and the gnocchi (€8.5 each). We also had the quinoa (€4.5), and little loaves of bread (for just €0.50) and carrot cake! All very reasonably priced. It is premade in glass containers and they heat it up do you. It looked like all glass, metal, or paper is used. So nice!! And super friendly staff! Really enjoyed eating outside in the courtyard, but there is also seating inside. 100% will do back!

La Cigale offers a delightful dining experience just a short walk from Avignon's famous Palais des Papes. This charming restaurant stands out not only for its delicious food but also for its remarkably efficient service, making it an ideal spot for tourists on structured schedules. The menu successfully bridges casual and refined dining. We sampled their burger, which came with expertly cooked fries and proved to be a satisfying choice, alongside delicate ravioli that demonstrated the kitchen's versatility. Both dishes were expertly prepared and delicious, showing that La Cigale can execute both classic comfort food and more traditional fare with equal skill. A standout moment was their pear and chocolate pastry - a sophisticated dessert that balanced sweet and rich flavors beautifully. Paired with their well-crafted espresso, it provided the perfect ending to our meal. What truly sets La Cigale apart is the staff's exceptional hospitality. The service team was extremely warm and inviting, creating a welcoming atmosphere that enhanced the overall dining experience. Great friendly service, perfect shade when noon rolls around. I almost ate all the kids chicken nuggets, so good and crispy. Burgers are hearty.

Tips for Eating Well on a Budget in Avignon

Understanding the rhythm of French dining can significantly reduce your food expenses while enhancing your experience. The concept of the "menu du jour" or "formule" is the budget traveler’s best friend, offering a starter and main course, or main course and dessert, at a fixed price that is almost always cheaper than ordering à la carte. By aligning your main meal with lunchtime rather than dinner, you can access the same high-quality kitchens for a fraction of the evening cost.

  • Embrace the Lunch Formula: Look for chalkboards advertising "Formule Midi" or "Menu du Midi." These set menus are typically available Monday through Friday and offer two to three courses for between €15 and €20, often at restaurants that would cost double that in the evening.
  • Step Away from the Place de l’Horloge: The main square offers great views but often inflated prices. Walk just five minutes away to streets like Rue des Marchands or Rue de la Bonneterie to find more authentic pricing and better food quality aimed at locals rather than tourists.
  • Visit the Les Halles Market: For a high-quality, low-cost meal, head to the covered market. Many stalls sell ready-to-eat dishes, fresh oysters, and regional cheeses. You can assemble a gourmet picnic for a few euros and eat it in the nearby Jardin des Doms.
  • Order the Carafe d’Eau: Instead of paying for bottled water, ask for a "carafe d’eau" (tap water). It is free, safe to drink, and a standard request in French restaurants. This small saving can add up over the course of a trip.
  • Look for Ethnic Cuisine: Avignon has a fantastic selection of North African, Middle Eastern, and Asian restaurants. These spots often offer incredibly generous portions of couscous, kebabs, or noodle dishes at prices that are significantly lower than traditional French brasseries.
  • Skip the Soda, Keep the Wine: Soft drinks are often marked up heavily in France. If you are of legal drinking age, a glass of local house wine (vin de la maison) is frequently cheaper than a Coca-Cola and offers a more authentic taste of the Rhône Valley.

Finding affordable food in Avignon is less about compromising and more about adapting to the local culture. By eating your main meal at lunch, exploring the side streets, and taking advantage of the incredible local markets, you can eat like royalty on a backpacker’s budget.

The true taste of Provence is not hidden behind a white tablecloth; it is found in the bustling bistros and family kitchens where recipes have been passed down for generations. Enjoy the journey, savor the sauces, and rest easy knowing that a memorable meal in this historic city doesn’t have to be an expensive one.
