15 Things to Do in Lille

Lille is a city that often catches visitors by surprise. Just an hour from Paris by high-speed train and a short hop from Brussels or London, it sits at the cultural crossroads of northern Europe. Its Flemish heritage shows up everywhere, from ornate guild houses to the rich, beer-braised stews served in its bustling estaminets.

The historic centre, known as Vieux-Lille, feels like a living museum with cobbled lanes and pastel facades, but the energy is anything but old-fashioned. Students pack the bars around Rue Masséna, contemporary art fills a converted Art Deco swimming pool, and a massive flea market takes over the streets every September.

Because the city is compact, you can pack a lot into a single day without ever needing a taxi or metro. Yet those who linger are rewarded with quieter museums, leafy citadel paths, and the chance to browse independent boutiques at a relaxed pace.

This guide brings together the essential stops for first-time visitors and the under-the-radar spots locals love. You will find grand landmarks, cosy food addresses, and practical ways to experience the city beyond the standard postcard views.

Whether you are planning a weekend break or using Lille as a base to explore French Flanders, these recommendations will help you build a balanced itinerary. They focus on authentic experiences, local flavour, and the places that give Lille its distinctive character.

Here are 15 of the best things to do in Lille, arranged to help you make the most of your visit.

Beautiful historic building with a unique courtyard full of book and antique stalls. A peaceful spot to wander and soak in the atmosphere.
vivi Chanle★★★★★
This place mainly has old books and printed posters. There’s nothing particularly special at first glance, but it’s still worth stopping by if you’re in the area. The space is a bit dark, and you do need to take your time to look around. If you genuinely like books and enjoy digging through shelves, you might find some interesting hidden gems.
Heather Mcnabb★★★★★
Beautiful huge building that dominates the large town square- fun to walk into and browse the book stalls, we purchased some small French poster reproductions.
Nadia Coombe★★★★☆
Found some real treasures at the second hand book vendors. Original TinTin too. Friendly vibe and great selection
Mamata Bait★★★★★
Excellent place for book lovers, the decor of the square itself is so alazing , taking the book buying experience to a different level level. Several book stores in row selling books, posters , plates very amazing collection. The square also is very nice with metal structure in the middle making the place look cooler . Loved the idea of open air book shop . Have seen many antique shop but not exclusively book sale like this . Very unique experience not just for book lovers but for all .

A wonderful place to spend an hour or two, especially if you want to escape the weather. Entry is free, and although security is thorough, with bag checks and a metal detector. The process is quick and the staff are friendly and welcoming. The museum has a minimalist, airy layout that lets the collection take centre stage. There are fascinating historical artworks from different centuries, including beautiful sculptures, pottery, and other decorative pieces. The cool temperature inside also makes it a comfortable place to explore on a warm day. There’s a pleasant library and a lovely café if you want to relax before or after your visit. Located in the heart of Lille city centre, it’s just a 3minute walk from Palais des Beaux-Arts metro station, making it very easy to reach. A peaceful, well curated museum that’s definitely worth visiting if you’re in Lille.
Ramona★★★★★
Must see in Lille, specially if visiting during the summer. The building is stunning!! All paintings are distributed in spacious rooms where you can appreciate the art up close or from afar. The collection is incredible. Family friendly! It has AC!!!!
Kara Culp★★★★★
Beautiful Museum, helpful employees in French and English. The art of the optical illusions in the open spaces is very unique. You will find it much less crowded than other museums in the larger cities of Europe, which allows your experience to be peaceful and gives you time to reflect on the art. I recommend checking out the relief maps on the subfloor. They are less common in many art museums, and many of their pieces were rescued and restored after the Second World War, so this is a very special collection indeed. I recommend this museum.
Sidónio Sousa★★★★★
Gorgeous building and museum, very cheap entrance fee and almost no tourists so it was quite pleasant and relaxing to be able to admire the art without the usual crowds. A must do when in Lille.
Stephanie Marlin★★★★★
We lucked out with no crowds and practically had the place to ourselves, which made the experience even better. I loved the diversity of the collection and the unexpected contrasts throughout. The giants paired with the painted museum walls themselves created such a cool juxtaposition. Calm, inspiring, and full of surprises. Absolutely worth the visit. A must see when in Lille.

Fun and interactive museum of illusions. Felt like a little girl again, wondering around the museum. Highly recommend to make a visit.
Jenny★★★☆☆
A little bit pricey for what it is (€18 per adult). The experience isn’t very long as the museum is quite small (about 30 minutes). There were only a handful of exhibits that were interesting. The rest were a bit gimmicky and not all too exciting but you’re able to get in a few photo. I got my tickets online in advance, but there was no wait to get in so you don’t have to, but that option is there.
Booska Sara★☆☆☆☆
Expensive entry given the very short time you can spend in there. Max 45mins I would say? €16 for adult and €13 for kids. Very simple setup. Kids would enjoy it, but as the person who pays for it, I would certainly save the money for other places. Staff are very friendly - that is my star to them.
Kay Tee★★★★☆
It's okay, most of the exhibits are fun and interesting and there are plenty of photo opportunities. It is very expensive though and it took us less than an hour to go round the whole thing. Maybe worth it if you can get a special offer.
Lucy Bamwo★★★★★
This was a very enjoyable museum. Lots of great photo opportunities. It only took 45 mins for us to go around. But a nice way to break up the morning.

Loved this Zoo. It is a lovely zoo with plenty of animals and birds to see. The cost for admission was 18€ for the four of us we went round it twice and we managed to see all animals. Some Enclosures have been renovated whilst others newly built. We had a great few hours. Dont miss out on the refreshment area as great choices of ice creams in tubs or cones.
Mihai Mura★★★★★
A wonderful visit to the Lille Zoo! It is a very well-maintained zoo, perfect for a relaxing family stroll. The animals seem to be well-cared for and the enclosures are beautifully arranged. The atmosphere is lovely, and the location in the middle of the park is simply stunning. The ticket price is more than affordable for what is offered. I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Lille!
chelcie cabonce★★★★☆
Had a nice time wandering around the zoo. The zoo is not very big, you can easily spend 1 hour and see everything. There is a small souvenir shop and a little shop to buy some snacks. There was a part were we couldn't see the monkeys which was a bit sad but maybe they weren't out because they were sleeping. The entrance fee is 6EUR which is very cheap compared to other zoos and if you are a local your entrance is free. So if you are in Lille, it's definitely a place I would recommend to visit.
Debbie Fawcett★★★★★
Small zoo but with well looked after animals. I saw Kookabura for the first time, and a species of wolf I hadn't been aware of before. Nice tropical area where the birds fly above you. Excellent value for money - only €3 for seniors +65 and €6 for adults. Highly recommended for all the family.
Sidónio Sousa★★★★★
Such a good exeperience, the zoo is not that big but it's extremely well maintained, the entrance fee is so cheap, so it's well worth the visit when in Lille.

Big square with a huge Colonne in the middle, and so many gorgeous buildings surrounding it. It's in the city center so very lively but at the same time peaceful. A must do when in Lille.

Nice square place. Plenty of terraces and boulangeries where you could enjoy a nice drink, meal or snack. It gets busy on sunny days. There is a McDonalds as well.

Lille is a beautiful city. The buildings are so architecturally stunning. Plenty to see and do on our 3 days trip. Lots of restaurants and coffee, patisseries. Yummy. Our hotel Mercure grand place was extremely good value and breakfast fabulous. Will visit again when its maybe not so hot 🥵
Stuart Philip★★★★★
Spent a few days in Lille and thoroughly enjoyed the trip. The architecture of the Grand Place is impressive. Plenty of places to eat and a prime place to meet friends.
Jinn Kim★★★★★
France, a country notorious among travelers for its challenging reputation, turned out to be far more charming than I expected. And for me, Lille had even more appeal than Paris. If I ever return to France, there’s no question I’ll be coming back to Lille.

A must visit architectural gem in Lille, with stunning interior! A fascinating mix of modern engineering and classic Gothic design that sets it apart from traditional European cathedrals. Entrance is free
Sidónio Sousa★★★★★
Very impressive Cathedral, the interior is just gorgeous and the hanging red chandelier is such a good example of mixture of old and new. Definately a must visit when in Lille.
Antoine★★★★☆
This beautiful cathedral has an intriguing history and I was fascinated by its splendour, especially the interior. The west façade is ultra modern until I entered and was struck by its warmth. The central nave leads straight to the Choir with left and right aisles which took me to several chapels behind the high altar. There's seven chapels and I was particularly drawn to the Chapel of Joan of Arc. There's so much to explore in this cathedral. Being a classified French monument, it's free to enter.
Mike Aoun★★★★☆
When i got to the church for a visit on a saturday noon, it was so crowded with people on their best clothes for mass. A nice sight to see locals with their religion. The church itself is nice with a mix of modern and gothic architecture and many arts displayed for the visitors to see.
Marcello Panzone★★★★★
We visited the Notre-Dame de la Treille Cathedral and overall had a very positive experience. The location is excellent, right in the city center and easy to reach on foot. The cathedral itself is not particularly spectacular or heavily decorated, it has a rather clean and simple Gothic style, which may feel less impressive compared to other major European cathedrals. That said, the atmosphere is truly beautiful and suggestive. We attended the Easter Vigil mass, and it was a genuinely special and memorable experience that we would highly recommend. Despite being a large cathedral, it still has a very local, parish-like feeling, with groups of people who clearly know each other and a strong sense of community, which makes the experience even more authentic. Definitely worth visiting, especially if you have the chance to attend a service.

Truly amazing to see this place and a nice park to rest up in in some shade when it was too hot. Attracts runners and bike riders but is really nice to hang out in.
Jessica Warburton-White★★★★★
We visited to enjoy a walk in a green space, and we weren't disappointed! Very easy to find with clear paths and plenty to see as you walk around. It was busy, but the space is so big it really didn't feel it. We just did a loop around the citadel building, but would have done more had we more time in Lille. Lots of wildlife to enjoy. We spotted two Herons! There were spaces to stop and rest, places to picnic and plenty of spaces for kids to play in various playground areas. Fab, free public space!
Murray Billett★★★★★
Had a nice walk in the park around. Was surprised at how easy it would be to just stroll into a military compound and almost did so by accident. The park is nice and the sun was out so had a nice walk.
Tay Nguyen★★★★★
Me and my boyfriend had a nice long walk along the path around Citadelle de Lille. The place is so big that we both agree that it takes the second time visit to finish exploring everything. You can see trees everywhere and it is beautiful. I highly recommend if you want a long nice walk. I am not sure about pinic here because I do not see anyone doing so. However, I could see it is a perfect place for bikers, hikers and runners. We had a lot of fun taking our time admiring the beautiful nature, there were a lot of place to rest along the way if you get tired.

Gorgeous tower that you can see from anywhere in Lille. Unfortunately we did not have time to enter and go up but i'm sure the experience must be amazing. Surely next time when we're in Lille.

Great place to visit and get a Birds Eye view of Lille. Staff were very helpful and friendly.

365° view of Lille from top platform. Awesome. 😎 We went on a whim and couldn't didn't get tickets online in advance, they were only available for the next day, and had to wait 30 mins+ until a group that had booked came out again, but worth it! You can ascend some stairs a bit for free, but have to pay (7€50 p.p. 2026/3) to get up high, by stairs or an awesomely old elevator. There's a toilet on the level where you pay and the elevator starts/ends.
Mike Aoun★★★★★
Watch out you have to be there early if you want to get a chance to get into the belfy and climb all the way up in the elevator or the escalator, but I am not sure if you can buy the tickets in advance, but you have to be able to stay within the line to get the chance to get inside. The view from there is very nice along with the history that you can read around the top of the tower you can also buy some nice souvenirs from there, and the ladies at the counter were very nice and helpful.
Ana Feroiu★★★★★
Nice experience to see all of Lille and some of Belgium too (if it's not cloudy). Tickets are 7.5 euro, you have to wait in line because they let up only 18 people at a time.

If you love modernism and the Bauhaus movement, you simply cannot miss . This house is absolutely breathtaking. The level of detail, the quality of the materials, and the research behind every aspect of the design are extraordinary. Every room reveals something new, making the visit a fascinating experience from start to finish. The €11 entrance fee is worth every cent. You receive a leaflet at the entrance, and each room has informative signs that help you understand the history and architectural choices. Don't miss the swimming pool and take the time to admire the villa from the far end of the garden—the view is spectacular. If you have any questions, ask the staff; they are knowledgeable and genuinely happy to share more about the house. If you'd like to dive deeper into its history, the bookshop has some opitions, and reading the Wikipedia article beforehand or afterwards is a great complement. Looooove it! An absolute masterpiece and one of the most impressive examples of modern architecture I've ever visited.
Jehum Jose★★★★★
went to Villa Cavrois. It is a very modern and impressive place. The architecture is unique and the spaces are well organized. The weather was nice, which made the visit more enjoyable. I visited different rooms and learned about its history. The garden is large and well maintained. It was a very interesting and enriching experience.
Martynas Video★★★★☆
We really enjoyed our visit – the villa is truly impressive and there is a lot to see. The only thing we felt was missing is that a few of the rooms could still be furnished, as they currently do not have any furniture.
Dimitri Storme★★★★☆
Beautifully restored Art Deco Palace. Nicely done. Unfortunately the furniture is not original but it gives you a great feel of how it must have been.
Yasser Sarout★★★★☆
It is worth the visit, especially if you are interested in architecture. The Villa Cavrois was built in the 1930's and restored about 15 years ago. It contains now the decorations and the furniture 100% like the original. The ticket costs 11 Euros, which I think is exaggerated.

I came to see the exhibition on 'Treasures of wool & silk' tapestry. This hospice is located in the heart of the city. 750 years of refuge founded in 1237. My visit includes admission to the Art and History Museum of Lille. Both well worth a visit.
Jonathan Vidrine★★★★★
Amazing exhibition of tapestries. The period Flemish furniture is worth taking the time to admire. Definitely worth visiting.

A really lovely museum that currently has an amazing exhibition on weaving and restoration of tapestries. Also interesting reading about the nuns who used to look after the sick there.
Mike Aoun★★★☆☆
I liked the architecture of the building itself. This place contains art that is not the normal ones that you usually see in museums around Paris with some more modern take on art there was a room with a projection that felt kind of a new idea and something interesting to see the location of the museum is very nice and it was included in my city pass.

We visited for the Kandinsky exhibition, which was very good. A great range of works, showing his evolution and different styles, as well as learning more about his life. The building and setting are lovely; yes it’s a bit of a trek - metro then bus but a nice walk through parkland too and worth it. Interesting outdoor sculptures and a range of modern art inside, a couple of hours is sufficient for a good visit.
Art Photo★★★★★
Very much enjoyed it. Beautiful gallery in a beautiful setting. Easily accessible by efficient public transport - metro from city centre then bus from metro station. All very easy, and then a discount on entry price for using the bus. Only quibble was the long wait. Every person arriving at the ticket desk had to have a long conversation with the staff member and this produced what felt like a long and unnecessary delay.
Joy Hunter★★★★★
Lovely museum in a nice part of town. I went because of the Kandinsky exhibit which was wonderful. The museum offers 3 euro refunding lockers for your bags/coats which are not allowed near the exhibits due the the worldwide vandalism to art lately. Very friendly and helpful staff and security.
Yvan Moungang★★★★★
It's a beautiful museum with lots of intriguing arts. Definitely recommend, I really enjoyed myself there.
Addie Lee★★★★★
It’s a great museum - situated in the middle of a park with sculptures around. Amazing in summer and so peaceful. Exhibits are very good. Gift shop is quite expensive (25 Euros for a Kandinsky cup). Overall great experience and staff are lovely. It is wheelchair accessible

This is Lille's Arc du Triomph and it's indeed very beautiful and not your typical arch, you can enter it for free and go down to a small garden that is very well maintained, really enjoyed this part when i visited Lille.
Antoine★★★★★
It stands on the site of the former Porte des Malades (Gate of the Sick), a medieval gate that led to a nearby leper hospital. This monumental triumphal arch symbolises the historic relationship between the old Flemish rule and new French rule. As I approached this gate from Jean-Baptiste Lebas Park it invoked a sense of history. It leads me directly towards the old city centre with the Lille Mairie on the right hand side with its 104 metres UNESCO listed belfry tower. I could just made out the statues of Hercules and Mars in the niches representing strength and war. There are two angels at the very peak. Interestingly, the gate was one of the primary entrances to Lille for travellers arriving from Paris
Mike Aoun★★★★☆
Although it is just a simple gate, i love walking in that area and admiring the architect and old historic symbol of this monument if you go very early in the morning, it will be empty, and you can take some nice pictures with the gate and the belfry in the background
Fred Alluso★★★★★
The Porte de Paris is one of Lille’s most striking monuments, a Baroque triumphal arch that feels both ceremonial and deeply human in presentation. Its sculpted stonework catches the light in a way that makes the entire structure seem alive, shifting from warm gold to cool slate depending on the hour. For fellow photographers, timing is everything. The arch is at its most photogenic in the early morning, when the sun rises behind the surrounding buildings and washes the facade in soft, angled light. Late afternoon offers a different mood; long shadows, richer contrast, and a warm glow that brings out the monument’s sculptural dimensions. If you enjoy night photography, the arch is beautifully illuminated after dusk, giving it a regal, theatrical presence. During the Christmas season, the entire area transforms. Lille decorates the Porte de Paris with festive lighting that enhances its architectural lines without overwhelming them. The surrounding plaza often features holiday installations, and the nearby streets glow with warm garlands and winter market energy. I haven't been there to dine recently, but the area has always been surrounded by exceptional cafes and bistros.
Jenny SkyIsTheLimit★★★★★
🇫🇷“Porte de Paris” is an Arc de Triomphe built in the 17th century to commemorate Louis XIV conquering the city. 🇫🇷 Across the street from the Porte de Paris, there's something commonly seen in Belgium and north of France: a Belfry (bell towers), the word comes from the Middle English berfrey, a term for a wooden tower used in medieval times. 🇫🇷 People can climb to the top of the Belfry at 104 meters to get a panoramic view of the Lille , but we did not have enough time (that is my excuse anyway 😅)

Gorgeous venue but the seating left a little to be desired. Very small about of space in the boxes and incredibly uncomfortable seats. Plenty of friendly staff though, and really enjoyed the performance we saw there.

I had an amazing experience watching a fost opera at lille’s opera. Seating was very cheap, and it was so good. Loved the performance and the architecture of the building itself both from the inside, and from the outside the staff were very friendly, and there were so many staff to help you be guided to your seat. although my seat was cheap still, I could see clearly the stage

The opera was very good, but it was such a pity that there weren’t any fans or AC inside the venue. The other people and I were melting for the entire time. Otherwise, it was a great experience with very talented performers!

Wonderful building, lovely to be able to see a contemporary French opera.

I visited the Opéra de Lille today for an evening recital, and it was an unforgettable experience from start to finish. The moment you step inside, the grandeur of the building sweeps you off your feet- from the sweeping red-carpeted staircases to the opulent chandeliers and intricate golden moldings, every corner of the opera house exudes elegance and history. The concert hall itself is breathtaking. Plush red velvet seats, ornate balconies, and a ceiling adorned with a spectacular chandelier set the stage for an intimate and atmospheric musical evening. I attended a recital featuring piano and voice, and the acoustics were absolutely stunning — every note resonated beautifully in the space. The ambiance was refined yet warm, and the entire experience felt like stepping into a different era. Whether you’re a fan of classical music or simply want to experience the cultural heartbeat of Lille, a visit to the Opéra is an absolute must. It’s not just a performance venue - it’s a piece of living art.

Tips for Visiting Lille

A little preparation goes a long way in Lille, especially if you want to experience the city like a local rather than a rushed day-tripper. These practical tips cover timing, transport, dining culture, and small customs that will make your stay smoother and more enjoyable.

  1. Time your visit around the Braderie de Lille. The first weekend of September transforms the entire city into Europe’s largest flea market. Hotels book out months in advance, restaurants serve mountains of mussels, and streets close to traffic. It is a fantastic spectacle, but not the weekend for a quiet museum trip.

  2. Use the metro and tram system. Lille’s fully automated metro is clean, frequent, and easy to navigate. A single ticket covers the metro, tram, and bus network. If you plan to use public transport more than three times in a day, buy a Pass Pass day ticket from a station vending machine.

  3. Book popular restaurants in advance. Estaminets and well-reviewed brasseries fill quickly, especially on Friday and Saturday evenings. Call ahead or use online booking platforms. Many kitchens close between lunch and dinner service, so check opening hours before showing up hungry at 3pm.

  4. Carry a mix of cash and card. Most shops, museums, and restaurants accept contactless payments, but small market stalls, independent bakeries, and some bars still prefer cash for purchases under €10. An ATM withdrawal is easy at any central bank.

  5. Learn a few French pleasantries. A simple “bonjour” when entering a shop and “merci, au revoir” when leaving goes a long way. Even if your French is limited, starting with a greeting before switching to English shows respect and is warmly received.

  6. Wear comfortable shoes for cobblestones. Vieux-Lille’s charm comes with uneven stone streets. Flat, cushioned footwear will save your feet, especially if you plan to walk from the old town to the citadel or Wazemmes market.

  7. Check museum opening days. Many Lille museums close on Tuesdays, while others close on Mondays. The Palais des Beaux-Arts and La Piscine have different schedules, so confirm before you build a day around a specific gallery.

Lille rewards travellers who arrive with a loose plan and an appetite for discovery. Its compact size makes spontaneous detours easy, whether that means following the smell of fresh waffles down a side street or stepping into a hidden courtyard chapel.

By mixing the major landmarks with local markets, quiet gardens, and authentic northern cuisine, you will leave with a fuller sense of what makes this city tick. More than a convenient stopover, Lille is a destination that earns its place on any northern France itinerary.
