Montpellier’s nightlife is a reflection of the city itself: youthful, sun-drenched, and effortlessly stylish. With one of the largest student populations in France, the city pulses with an energy that shifts from lazy afternoon terraces to vibrant late-night dens.
Unlike the formal wine bars of Bordeaux or the glitzy clubs of the Riviera, Montpellier offers an eclectic mix of hidden cocktail speakeasies, rowdy craft beer halls, and chic natural wine caves. The historic centre, known as l’Écusson, is a labyrinth of medieval streets where every corner seems to hide a new drinking spot waiting to be discovered.
The Mediterranean climate plays a significant role in how locals drink. For most of the year, the preferred seat is outdoors, with a glass of local Picpoul de Pinet or a refreshing spritz in hand, watching the world go by on a sun-drenched square.
However, the scene is not just about wine and pastis. A new wave of mixologists and craft brewers has transformed the city into a serious destination for cocktail enthusiasts and beer lovers, bringing international techniques to this historic southern hub.
Navigating the sheer volume of options can be overwhelming, especially if you are only in town for a few days. To help you cut through the noise, we have curated a list of the essential stops you need to make.
From secret garden terraces to bustling Belgian beer halls, here are the 15 best bars in Montpellier that you absolutely must visit.

Veeery nice place! It starts with the disovery of how to open the door to the basement, which is relatively easy to find, but not too difficult either. Then you get to this very stylish basement with a fantastic atmosphere. All the cocktails were excellent, each with their own personality, and their own glass and decorations. Prices are very good value for money, considering the quality of the place, the cocktails and the level of service. Would 100% go again!

Just a wonderful surprise. We got what we needed, not what we expected and it's been effective: Well represented and original cocktails. Barmes know what they are talking about... We'll come again!

The cocktails were delicious! The waiting staff were nice. I’m looking forward to going again and trying some of the other cocktails.

Never expected to have such a great Irish pub experience in the middle of France. I learned more about Beer in 20 minutes than i thought possible. Once inside it’s as if you stepped into a pub in the middle of Ireland, a very authentic place. The Barman was very friendly and incredibly informative about all things Pub related Bravo! Very rare for a Wine guy you be so impressed in a beer place

Had a very nice pint and chat with the staff here around midday. Pub was clean and quiet and the seating outside was cal. And welcome after the bustling centre. Will definitely come back some day. Cheers!

Everything you would expect from an Irish Pub abroad. Good outdoor seating. Clean toilets. Not many food options unfortunately.
Luc Durand★★★★★
Genuine Irish pub in the middle of Montpelier. Good beer, food you'd expect to find in an irish pub friendly staff members and sports on TV. Oh, and there is a massive outdoor space for warm evenings, what else would you want?

I went for lunch with my partner, we had sausages and fish and chips. For dessert we had a piece of cheesecake. We also had blonde beer. The food was very nice, I recommend the fish and chips. The service was also very kind and food arrived fast and on time. I would recommend the restaurant and go again.

Over the span of years this place remain the best English kitchen restaurant in the world.
Wonderful English breakfast and delicious fish and chips that you wouldn't find in England itself.
All accompanied by a wonderful selection of beers.
Niek Verwoerd (tri_to_be_kind)★★★★★
Surprising for a vegan tourist. It's not often that I end up eating in an English pub. More often I end up in places that serve noodles or current day hipster burger or pokebowl places. So I was really happy to come here and share two meals. We had some garlic bread, the burger and the bangers. We watched a part of a football game between a French team and Madrid. It was fun! Staff speaks French and English and the location is a very picturesque street. The atmosphere was great. The burger was nice but plain and the bangers were a bit dry. But all in all with the sauces it was a really nice fast food meal.
Rose McDaniel★★★★★
Great local English bar and restaurant. Great area! We’ve gotten a few beers but finally got a burger. Would get again!
Fabian Verstraete★★★★★
A really sweet and cozy place. It really gives you that English vibe and the food is really really good. I ordered a burger and didn't have to wait even 10 minutes. The service is nice and fast. They knew English when i visited which is nice for tourists. The food isn't too expensive and great for a fast snack.
Personally for me this place is perfect, I loved it!

Don't have the saucissoni! In the morning I had vomiting and diarrhoea and no it wasn't the alcohol as I was still struggling in the evening. I had two shots of gin so I wouldn't have diarrhoea and vomiting from that. They need to change the saucisson, it ruined the next day and we aren't here for long! Quel dommage because the bartender was lovely and it was nicely set up. Needs some flavoured gins as the violet one didn't taste flavoured.

A decent selection of beers and friendly bar staff. The bar is in a vibrant street so plenty of opportunity to people watch.

We visited this bar and had a really good time. It does get quite crowded, but that also adds to the lively and energetic atmosphere.
We ordered three beers and one Aperol Spritz, and everything was as expected. The vibe of the place makes it a great spot to hang out with friends and enjoy a few drinks together.

Le Rebuffy looks exactly the same after more than 20 years, stirring deep nostalgia as the city has changed around it—even the music was straight from that era. Revisiting this spot where I spent so much time in my youth felt like stepping back in time, just as I remembered it.

Really nice café close to the botanical garden. The food was absolutely amazing, i personally recommend their avocado poké bowl. They also had a big variety of drinks and they were all fantastic, especially their porter. Finding the menu, ordering and paying was easy; you just had to scan a QR code. The prices are much cheaper than what you’d find in the center and the food is much better. I’d definitely recommend stopping by here! 🌟🌟🌟

Arrived at our apartment just before lunch so this was the nearest cafe.
Quite close to the university & as such there was a strong student vibe.
I’d try & get a table in the shade next time 🥵.
Wanted a light lunch so ordered some nachos & calamari. Both were delicious as was the Chardonnay.
Highly recommended.

Great find after a long tour of the old down - needed some straight forward snacks and a drink to keep us going. The fries were perfectly cooked - I asked for well done. Could have done with some vinegar but didn’t ask. This didn’t get lost in translation between the order and the chef! Guacamole and nachos were good with wedges of slime.

I just dropped into this place, and decided to have a traditional French dish - chips and guacamole!!! But, they put such care into making these, I asked the server to compliment the chef - they would have been lavish in San Diego! They have a decent "vin ordinaire" and while the wait staff is insanely busy, I felt very well attended. So, out of my four nights in Montpellier, I chose to go back there again! This time, roasted cheese with honey, and a plate of sausage - but with their additions of bread and tomatoes and cornichons and walnuts and croutons - I had a wonderful feast!! I highly recommend this restaurant and I will be returning!

Definitely a place to go in Montpelier for a date or pre dinner cocktail. Their featured cocktails are very inventive. Spicy whiskey drink! The small menu à grignoter (small bites) pairs well with your drink. (We had smoky olives.) Great ambiance. Seems to attract as many friendly locals too. Highly recommend checking it out and having a pop. Cheers!
Patrick Loomis★★★★★
I cannot say enough good things about this bar. Anyone who spends what must have been thousands of euros on making ice has the "attention to detail" aspect well covered. Comfortable room; qualified, educated service; and a well-curated, extensive selection of spirits. This is THE cocktail bar in Montpellier. Don't miss the "Laboratory" downstairs.
Sharon Bloom★★★★★
On any traveling adventure, we are always looking for a great place for classic cocktails. On our recent trip to Montpellier, we finally found it! Paul Perie and Friend Really know their spirits and offer the quality cocktail we have been searching for! Let's not forget the smoked salmon that was served, superb! As former Seattleites, we know our salmon... And cocktails.
Paul Bou Haroun★★★★☆
Le quatrieme tiers is a new bar in town and it was recommended to us by Bonsoir - a very cool bar as well - so we saddled up and went to give it a try on Saturday… here’s the breakdown: staff are amazingly friendly and welcoming, decor and ambiance and the place overall are pretty fantastic, almost like you’ve sketched a kitchen from a cottage and decided to make it a bar! Brilliant!! They also have a more intimate setup downstairs which is very cool… However the old fashioned needed a bit of work and the bathroom is not for clostrophobes as it’s dangerously tiny but it’s a cool place all in all. Give it a shot

We stopped by this Irish pub on a Saturday afternoon and ordered a beer along with three Irish coffees. The drinks were enjoyable and made for a nice, relaxed break.
The service was average (neither particularly good nor bad). However, the atmosphere of the place, combined with the overall vibe of the city, made it a great spot to sit down and have a good conversation with friends.

Always a great spot to have a drink. The service is always amazing, they're very positive and passionate when talking about new beer specials. The atmosphere is chill, they also have some apéro bits which are a great option if you want to share some small snacks. The beers are very fresh and tasty!

Visited in September 2024. We were 7 people and sat inside. The beer selection was great and the staff was nice and helpful. There are QR codes on the tables to access the menus and you can even get table service, which I'm not so used to for a beer bar. Everything was properly served, every beer came with its own specific coaster and glass. It took a bit of time to get the order, but that makes sense since the place was quite busy.

The worst experience in a bar in Montpellier
We went there to get some shots of tequila, and after paying the barman said that another clients Didn't pay to him and with this payment his account was balanced and if we want our shots we have to go and search another person's in a closer bar and ask them to pay.
(Persons that we didn't know and persons that left before we asked or paid our shots)
Ahaha, yes, has you heard! It sounds ilogic, i know. And it was totally ilogic for us also.
I have worked in a bar, and we know that they have to pay before the shots and beer before or at the moment that you give them. Maybe the barman didn't know how to do his job because he was new, but it was the worst experience in a bar en Montpellier

Tips for Enjoying Montpellier’s Bar Scene
Before you step out for a drink in this vibrant Mediterranean city, it helps to understand the local customs and logistics. Montpellier is a walkable city, but the nightlife is highly concentrated in specific squares and alleys, and knowing when to go—and what to order—will significantly enhance your experience. Here are some insider tips to help you drink like a local and navigate the scene with confidence.
-
Embrace the "Apéro" Culture: The sacred hour in Montpellier is between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM. This is when terraces fill up and drinks are often accompanied by complimentary snacks like olives or peanuts. Arrive early to secure a prime outdoor seat, especially during the summer months.
-
Look Beyond the Main Squares: While Place Jean Jaurès and Place de la Comédie are bustling, they tend to be touristy and pricier. Venture into the narrow streets of the Saint-Roch and Beaux-Arts neighbourhoods to find more authentic, locally loved spots with better value.
-
Dress Smart-Casual: Montpellier is stylish but relaxed. While flip-flops and beachwear are fine for daytime terraces, bouncers at the more upscale cocktail bars and clubs in the evening will likely turn you away if you look too scruffy. Aim for a clean, chic casual look.
-
Know the Last Call: While the French dining schedule runs late, most traditional wine bars and pubs will close around 1:00 AM or 2:00 AM. If you plan to stay out later, you will need to transition to a late-night club or one of the few bars with a special late license.
-
Try the Regional Wines: While cocktails are trendy, you are in the Languedoc region—one of the largest wine-producing areas in the world. Ask the bartender for a local red from Pic Saint-Loup or a crisp white from Grès de Montpellier to truly taste the terroir.
Montpellier is a city that rewards curiosity. Whether you find yourself sipping a natural wine in a candlelit medieval cellar or enjoying a hoppy IPA on a bustling terrace, the city’s drinking culture is defined by its sociability and connection to the Mediterranean lifestyle.
Take your time, chat with the bartenders, and don’t be afraid to wander down an unmarked alley—that is often where you will find the city’s best-kept secrets.
