15 Best Rooftop Bars in Montpellier

Sipping a cocktail while watching the sun dip behind the Cathédrale Saint-Pierre is one of the most underrated pleasures in the South of France. While Montpellier is famous for its medieval streets and vibrant student energy, its vertical landscape has transformed dramatically over the last decade. Today, the city boasts a thriving scene of elevated terraces that blend Mediterranean vibes with urban sophistication.

Unlike the sprawling beach clubs of the Riviera, Montpellier’s rooftop culture is intimate and design-forward. Here, you are more likely to find a hidden garden terrace in Écusson than a massive pool party. The aesthetic leans towards lush greenery, warm terracotta tones, and panoramic views of the Pic Saint-Loup in the distance.

The local climate plays a significant role in the experience. With over 300 days of sunshine a year, these elevated spaces are usable from early spring straight through to late autumn. The gentle Tramontane wind often keeps the air fresh, making even the hottest July afternoons bearable with a chilled glass of local Picpoul de Pinet.

Navigating the narrow streets below can be chaotic, but ascending to a rooftop offers a moment of calm detachment. Whether you are looking for a craft cocktail, a natural wine, or a sunset spritz, the city’s elevated bars cater to a diverse crowd of locals, students, and discerning travelers.

This guide curates the essential elevated experiences in the city, ensuring you know exactly where to go for the best views, vibes, and vermouth. We have climbed the stairs and tested the menus so you can spend less time searching and more time soaking in the skyline.

Below is the definitive list of the highest quality terraces and rooftop concepts currently defining Montpellier’s nightlife.

We made a reservation for our first night because we knew we would be tired and wanted something easy to get to. (Just a short elevator ride away. 😊) It was an absolutely wonderful experience. We started in the bar area enjoying a drink prior to our reservation time. Then we moved to the dining room. Our servers were fantastic! When our limited French ran out they were extremely helpful and happy to switch to English. Our meals were excellent and the service was too. Later in our trip we opted for a late afternoon/early evening out by the pool. We enjoyed food from the bar menu and stellar service once again. We will definitely return to the Pullman as well as Le Vertigo!!
WG Pei★☆☆☆☆
Very disappointed. The area was scary. The photos in google are clearly over filtered because the rooftop was not chic at all but more for a family gathering. The main course does not worth 25 euro. The wine was from the supermarket. If you expect a chic experience don’t come here.
Tamás Csala★★★☆☆
Amazing atmosphere, very well presented but mediocre tasting food, as well as mediocre service. And you pay 4 euros for purified tap water.
J.J. Bresolin★☆☆☆☆
Horribly frustrating service. They clearly would rather that patrons NOT join them for dinner and they make it painfully obvious. Great place for smokers.
Lucian Ene★★★☆☆
Prices are too high for the taste of food. Also, a bit of disorganisation with serving.

Delightful. A little expensive as you would expect for cocktails at a rooftop bar, but no more than you would pay in most places. Really relaxed, lovely view, great staff. Tried 2 cocktails and they were both incredible! Would 100% recommend. Really nice and out of the way so not too busy!

This is a gorgeous rooftop bar and restaurant. The menu is varied and good value, and there's a great selection of beers and wines. The view of the Lez, L'Arbre Blanc, the new Hôtel de Ville, the sunset and even the Pic Saint Loup is unrivalled. And there is a pool. Tuesdays and Thursdays are event nights I think. Friendly service too.

I was intrigued by this place, which is always lit up, so we finally booked the restaurant and then, before leaving, a trip to the rooftop itself. I loved the atmosphere; the waiter was super friendly and accommodating. Cocktails: I tried and enjoyed a floral gin and tonic. Excellent. It was my first time eating pasta in a French restaurant. The presentation was excellent, and the taste was excellent. To finish, I had a tarte tatin. All accompanied by wine! The prices are moderately high, but that's how it is in France. We'll definitely be back.

This is the second time in a month that we've visited the Miranove restaurant; we were so pleasantly surprised. We tried several appetizers, main courses, and desserts, and everything was excellent. The wines and cocktails were also very good. The service was impeccable. We were warmly welcomed and attentive throughout the meal, with a waitress who was clearly dedicated to making sure we were well looked after.

Excellent place, great atmosphere, special mention to the servers who were lovely, the food is very good. I highly recommend it.

We visited this bar and really liked the overall atmosphere. The place is nicely designed, and the music was great, creating a fun and enjoyable environment. However, once it got crowded, the experience was not as smooth. The staff seemed a bit understaffed, which meant it took quite a while to get our drinks. As for the cocktails, they didn’t fully meet our expectations. They felt quite diluted, with a lot of ice and not much of an alcohol presence. We also ordered some tequila shots, and unfortunately, they gave a similar impression of being watered down. Overall, it’s a nice spot for the vibe and music, but there’s definitely room for improvement when it comes to drink quality and service during busy times.

Went on Friday 11th October The bread (pita and baguette) were still cold from fridge (or freezer). The wrost fries I ever had in my life. All bowl look huge but there is not much hummus, fries, tzaziki in it. The entire table was disappointed by the food. Atmosphere was great, DJ killed it 👏 Waiters with a lot of energy 🩵 Will give them an other chance soon

Don’t understand why this is in the Michelin guide. Disappointing to say the least. Overcooked steak swimming in a pool of oil, soggy chips cooked in lukewarm oil. First night in Montpellier. Hope it’s a one off and the other restaurants are better.
Mabelle Makary★★★★★
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (If I could give 6 stars, I would!) I genuinely don’t understand how L’Arbre doesn’t already have a Michelin star — it absolutely deserves one. The entire experience was flawless. The chef himself is present throughout the evening, caring and passionate, personally explaining the menu. The staff is equally attentive and warm, making you feel truly welcomed. Every dish was a highlight: the Angus beef was a delicacy, perfectly cooked; even the simple salad and fries were elevated to something exceptional. The filet of turbot was sublime, especially with its rich and flavorful sauce. And the desserts… works of art. The fraisier was unbelievably light, and for chocolate lovers, the royal is next level. A special mention for the kindness of the team: I mistakenly booked for the next day, but the chef didn’t say a word — he just quietly found us a table. I only realized the error later when I got a confirmation message for the following night. Truly an unforgettable dining experience. Bravo to the whole team!
Berenika Wyrzykowska-Novi★★★★★
Haven’t been to the restaurant (yet!) but the bar is great, especially during sunset - the stuff and music are nice, the drinks are quite expensive but generous. A great place to start a party or to bring your friends from outside of Montpellier, as the bar is one of its kind in the city, and the architecture of the building is definitely standing out.

This Is a wonderful place to spend a lovely evening. The food is excellent and the athmosphere is extremely pleasant with a combination of simple elegance and sophistication. I love it and recommend it !

A very nice restaurant located in a beautiful section of Montpellier. The service was excellent and the staff welcoming and helpful. My wife ordered the ris de veau and I the langue du boeuf. Both were excellent. I highly recommend the langue, it was prepared perfectly. The ambiance was nice, but a little austere. Quality versus price, excellent. Worth a detour.
Ulises Sotomayor★☆☆☆☆
The aperol spritz sucked. I think they used cheap prosecco. You pay for the view and low quality drinks.
Daniel Albert★★★★★
Went out of my way to visit this iconic and architecturally significant condo building. One of the most interesting and unique buildings I have ever witnessed in-person.

Fantastic building from the outside. Montpellier has great architecture but this one was the most surprising and amazing.
Graham Johnson★☆☆☆☆
Nice ambience, but service and food are dreadful. I ordered lamb, and they brought a fish dish, which I sent back. The lamb came 10 minutes later, burnt on the outside and raw on the inside. When I complained, they clearly weren't surprised or bothered. I then ordered coffee with milk, and they couldn't manage to get that right either. What was supposed to be a nice meal for the two of us was ruined. I told them, in french, I wouldn't be coming back and got the gallic shrug.

We presented our new ranges of heat pump and boiler equipment to over 120 people at the magnificent O’Rooftop in Laverune. The catering, the organization, the equipment delivery, the kitchen equipment (refrigerators, freezer, ice machine, chairs, etc.), the multimedia equipment, the layout of the hall and the rooftop—everything was perfect. Thank you, Sandrine, for everything. I highly recommend this venue for all your events.

We had the pleasure of discovering O Rooftop in Lavérune and highly recommend this venue. Our contact with Sandrine, the owner, was reassuring, very professional, and particularly pleasant. Her support and availability greatly contributed to the success of our event. The setting is magnificent, just a few minutes from Montpellier. The indoor and outdoor spaces are spacious, modern, perfectly maintained, and offer numerous layout possibilities for all types of events. Whether for a private reception, wedding, birthday, or corporate event, O Rooftop is an ideal venue. The value for money, the services offered, and the quality of service are simply excellent. We wholeheartedly recommend this establishment and will not hesitate to use their services again for future events. The Andrieux Catering Team

It's more on the noisy party side, with indoor and outdoor tables. Dishes are fairly small, tapas-type. The cocktails tasted good but contained very little alcohol, if any at all. Inside, there were small flies around the table and a funky smell. Of course, no English menu, no wifi, so not really foreign-friendly.
Ana★★★★★
Went by chance with my partner, was surprised at the atmosphere - very lively, lots of people! Yet the food was really good, and it arrived in time - there was no extra waiting time 🙂 overall would recommend!

We were invited for a birthday party in that place, we have mixed feelings about the place. I wouldn’t recommend this venue for birthdays. My friends and I were very upset with the organization. We had seen the staff on other occasions putting on hats and bringing flames around the tables, which we assumed was part of a birthday celebration. However, we found out that this is just something the restaurant does every night at 11:00 PM and not related to birthdays at all. Regarding the birthday cake, we learned too late that you need to reserve it 48 hours in advance. Despite this misunderstanding, my friend asked for the birthday gesture, but it wasn’t possible, even though the cake arrived just before 11:00 PM. Beyond that, the food was underwhelming. The tapas we ordered were bland, and the drinks were off. I ordered a Piña Colada, but it tasted strange with passion fruit, which I hadn’t requested. The atmosphere was lively, but also unbearably loud. Even when we were singing "Happy Birthday," we couldn’t hear ourselves over the noise. Overall, I wouldn’t recommend celebrating your birthday here. The hats and dances are part of their regular routine, not a special birthday touch.
Kirill Maksimkin★★★★☆
Food is tasty and I like it but the place was really crowded. At one moment it became so load (talking and music playing there) so we could barely hear each other.

This hotel was great, very clean and comfortable. The staff were friendly, welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. The rooms were cleverly designed with kitchen facilities such as fridge, dishwasher and microwave plus all the cooking equipment, cutlery and crockery you could need to make a meal. There was a restaurant, room service and breakfast available but also places to eat in walking distance. There’s also a small pool and rooftop bar. A tram stops outside to go to Montpellier but we walked and it took 20-25 minutes - not particularly scenic until you get nearer to central Montpellier. We were able to leave our luggage all day while we went into Montpellier before an evening flight. It’s very convenient for the airport - 15 minutes in a taxi and 12 euros. All in all Miranove was very good and very reasonably priced.

From the moment we arrived at Reception we were met by Julia. She was absolutely amazing, friendly and so professional. She went out of her way to make our stay fantastic. Booked the restaurant so we could celebrate our 50th anniversary with good food. She took time to show us how and where to get the tram, where to go for the best of Montpellier. Julia keep up your wonderful friendly service. You are an excellent asset for this Hotel. Ivan and I wish you the best and hope you are appreciated. The room was lovely and really big and clean. Fabulous huge fluffy towels and a clean bathroom. Breakfast was great, nice choices and great coffee. Loved the tram right outside the hotel. Took us to all the sights etc etc and so easy. We were sad to leave today but will hopefully e back again.

JOST Hotel Montpellier is a vibrant and stylish hotel with a unique personality. The modern rooms are comfortable and thoughtfully designed, while the lively bar and restaurant create a welcoming atmosphere. The generous breakfast buffet is an excellent way to start the day. Throughout the hotel, everything appears clean, fresh and well maintained. If you're looking for a contemporary hotel with character and a relaxed vibe, JOST is an excellent choice for a stay in Montpellier.
Thomas Altenburger★★★★★
Breakfast was excellent, with a wide variety of options to choose from... like different types of bread and spreads, cereals, pancakes, croissants, yogurts, and more. Actually, the breakfast buffet felt comparable to that of a higher-end hotel, so I haven't seen hostels where you get so much to eat. The restaurant and bar have a great atmosphere, making it a pleasant place to relax. The background music (a mix of chill-out, pop, and house) was nice too. You can also order food there in the evening. I ordered a pizza, which I really enjoyed. The location is very convenient as well, being close to the railway station. In the dorm itself, the hallway outside of the sleeping room was a bit noisy, so at night you should not be too loud in order to not disturb the others.
Carol H★★★★★
I stayed at Jost in Montpellier for 4 nights at the end of December. I am a mature solo traveler and really appreciate that Jost invests in good mattresses for the travellers who chose to stay in the dorms. I always have a good sleep at a Jost location. The staff at Jost are great. Helpful and friendly. The hostel is a few minutes walk from the train station on a walkable grade and there is a good grocery store close by. It is a 15 minute walk to town but there are trams close by too. The dorm beds are spacious and comfortable. Great blackout curtains and all plugs worked. The guest kitchen was a bit of a mess when I first arrived but it was the holiday season and they fixed the problem as soon as it was mentioned. Kitchen dishes and cutlery was in short supply. Overall, Jost Hostel is a very good safe place to stay while visiting Montpellier.
Harry Johnson★★★★☆
A modern and lively hotel with a good location near the train station and city center. Rooms are clean and tidy but often quite small, so it’s better suited for short stays. The strongest impression comes from the common areas and design, while noise and occasional crowds can be an issue for light sleepers.
irina lezaic★★☆☆☆
We stayed at Jost Hotel two times both in the 8 people dorm. Once for a night where the room was in good condition and the ac was working fine. On the second stay for two nights we had bedbugs in our bed, we reported it to the receptionist and later filed a complaint through their Website. Jost never responded. I'm dissapointed in the service that was provided, bedbugs caused us a lot of hastle and mental strain and our issues was ignored.

The panoramic terrace was closed at 5 PM today, even though the sign displayed off-season opening hours of 10 AM to 7 PM. The least they could do is display accurate information (reason/duration of closure, so we know whether to come back later or not).

A disgrace in terms of accessibility for disabled people; half the elevators are out of order, you have to call a number that doesn't answer to get in, it's truly pathetic that it's been like this for months, with the old, useless disabled access sign outside that only gives false information. In short, avoid it at all costs!

My sister and I came by Bikube for dinner and what an amazing experience. The food was amazing, the wine (selected graciously by the chef) was incredible. The atmosphere in the courtyard was relaxed and cozy. Service was equally as great! The staff was kind and the chef was happily helpful in finding the right wine for our meal. All in all a great experience. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a place for a great meal (and a little more) in Montpellier.

The hotel itself is nice, but the brunch we had was inedible and super expensive. 27 euro each for mushy sandwiches, super sweet pancakes, something described as a pita that was about a half cup of yogurt on a soft roll (also soggy). Maybe other meals are better.

Tips for Enjoying Montpellier’s Rooftop Scene

To truly maximize your experience in this sun-drenched city, a little local knowledge goes a long way. The rooftop culture here operates on a Mediterranean rhythm that differs slightly from Northern European or American standards. Understanding the timing, dress codes, and reservation policies will ensure you are not turned away at the door or left waiting in a stairwell. Here is how to navigate the heights of Montpellier like a seasoned local.

1. Time Your Visit with the Golden Hour
The French concept of apéro is sacred, typically starting around 6:00 PM or 7:00 PM. Arrive at your chosen rooftop before the sun begins to set to secure the best seats, as most terraces operate on a first-come, first-served basis for the best railings. The light hitting the limestone buildings during golden hour is spectacular, but it is also when the crowds peak, so plan to arrive slightly earlier than the local rush.

2. Dress Smart-Casual
While Montpellier is a student city with a laid-back vibe, the higher-end rooftops enforce a smart-casual dress code, especially after dark. Leave the beach flip-flops and damp swimwear at the hotel. Opt for linen shirts, sundresses, or clean sneakers. The French term is chic décontracté—effortless but polished.

3. Make Reservations for Large Groups
Most rooftop terraces have limited square footage due to the historic nature of the buildings in the Écusson (old town). If you are traveling in a group of four or more, it is highly recommended to call ahead or book a table online. Many venues reserve their plush lounge seating for reservations, leaving only bar stools for walk-ins.

4. Understand the "Consumption" Policy
Unlike a standard bar where you can simply order a soda and sit for hours, some of the more exclusive rooftops in Montpellier require a minimum spend or a "formule" (set menu) to access the premium view areas. Check the menu posted at the entrance or ask the host about the policy before being seated to avoid surprises on your bill.

5. Check for Weather Closures
Because most terraces here are open-air and subject to the Mistral or Tramontane winds, they will occasionally close the rooftop section for safety reasons. If the weather looks blustery or if there is a sudden summer storm, call ahead to confirm the terrace is open. There is nothing worse than arriving for a sunset view only to find the upstairs cordoned off.

6. Explore the Neighborhood Beforehand
Many of the best rooftops are hidden within boutique hotels or shopping centers in the historic center. Give yourself extra time to get lost in the winding medieval streets. Parking is notoriously difficult in the center, so utilize the city’s excellent tram system and walk to your destination.

As the evening deepens and the city lights begin to twinkle below, you will understand why Montpellier has become a benchmark for Southern French hospitality. The transition from a casual afternoon drink to a vibrant evening scene is seamless here, often accompanied by the distant sound of live music echoing up from the Place de la Comédie.

Whether you are a visitor exploring the Languedoc region or a local rediscovering your city from a new angle, these terraces offer a unique perspective. Choose your favorite from the list above, order a refreshing Lillet Spritz, and toast to la belle vie high above the terracotta rooftops.
