12 Best Rooftop Cafes in Montpellier

Rooftop culture in Montpellier is less about towering skyscrapers and more about the gentle elevation that reveals the city’s terracotta rooftops, medieval spires, and the distant shimmer of the Mediterranean. It is a city where the skyline belongs to the past, yet the lifestyle remains distinctly modern. Finding a table above the bustling tram lines and narrow cobblestone streets offers a rare moment of tranquility.

The local climate plays a significant role in the appeal of these elevated escapes. With over 300 days of sunshine a year, the open-air terraces become an extension of the living room for residents and visitors alike. Whether you are seeking a morning espresso or a late-night cocktail, the breeze at the top of a building provides a refreshing contrast to the heat of the Place de la Comédie below.

However, navigating the vertical landscape of Montpellier can be tricky for outsiders. Many of the best terraces are hidden behind unassuming facades or accessible only through boutique hotels and department stores. They are not always visible from the street, which makes them feel like secret gardens reserved for those in the know.

This guide curates the most atmospheric and quality-driven elevated addresses in the city. We have evaluated these spaces not just for their height, but for the quality of their coffee, the creativity of their mixology, and the authenticity of their ambiance. We have prioritized venues that offer genuine hospitality rather than simply a gimmick of altitude.

From the historic Écusson to the modern districts of Antigone and Port Marianne, the variety is surprising. Some offer panoramic views of the Pic Saint-Loup, while others provide an intimate view of the Saint-Pierre Cathedral. Each location serves a different purpose, whether it is a business lunch, a romantic date, or a solo retreat with a book.

Below, you will find a carefully selected list of the best rooftop cafes that capture the essence of the Mediterranean art de vivre. These are spaces where the service is warm, the design is considered, and the view adds an intangible value to every sip.

We made a reservation for our first night because we knew we would be tired and wanted something easy to get to. (Just a short elevator ride away. 😊) It was an absolutely wonderful experience. We started in the bar area enjoying a drink prior to our reservation time. Then we moved to the dining room. Our servers were fantastic! When our limited French ran out they were extremely helpful and happy to switch to English. Our meals were excellent and the service was too. Later in our trip we opted for a late afternoon/early evening out by the pool. We enjoyed food from the bar menu and stellar service once again. We will definitely return to the Pullman as well as Le Vertigo!!

Very disappointed. The area was scary. The photos in google are clearly over filtered because the rooftop was not chic at all but more for a family gathering. The main course does not worth 25 euro. The wine was from the supermarket. If you expect a chic experience don’t come here.
Tamás Csala★★★☆☆
Amazing atmosphere, very well presented but mediocre tasting food, as well as mediocre service. And you pay 4 euros for purified tap water.
J.J. Bresolin★☆☆☆☆
Horribly frustrating service. They clearly would rather that patrons NOT join them for dinner and they make it painfully obvious. Great place for smokers.
Lucian Ene★★★☆☆
Prices are too high for the taste of food. Also, a bit of disorganisation with serving.

Delightful. A little expensive as you would expect for cocktails at a rooftop bar, but no more than you would pay in most places. Really relaxed, lovely view, great staff. Tried 2 cocktails and they were both incredible! Would 100% recommend. Really nice and out of the way so not too busy!

This is a gorgeous rooftop bar and restaurant. The menu is varied and good value, and there's a great selection of beers and wines. The view of the Lez, L'Arbre Blanc, the new Hôtel de Ville, the sunset and even the Pic Saint Loup is unrivalled. And there is a pool. Tuesdays and Thursdays are event nights I think. Friendly service too.
Silvia Marinelli★★★★★
I was intrigued by this place, which is always lit up, so we finally booked the restaurant and then, before leaving, a trip to the rooftop itself. I loved the atmosphere; the waiter was super friendly and accommodating. Cocktails: I tried and enjoyed a floral gin and tonic. Excellent. It was my first time eating pasta in a French restaurant. The presentation was excellent, and the taste was excellent. To finish, I had a tarte tatin. All accompanied by wine! The prices are moderately high, but that's how it is in France. We'll definitely be back.

This is the second time in a month that we've visited the Miranove restaurant; we were so pleasantly surprised. We tried several appetizers, main courses, and desserts, and everything was excellent. The wines and cocktails were also very good. The service was impeccable. We were warmly welcomed and attentive throughout the meal, with a waitress who was clearly dedicated to making sure we were well looked after.

Don’t understand why this is in the Michelin guide. Disappointing to say the least. Overcooked steak swimming in a pool of oil, soggy chips cooked in lukewarm oil. First night in Montpellier. Hope it’s a one off and the other restaurants are better.
Mabelle Makary★★★★★
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (If I could give 6 stars, I would!) I genuinely don’t understand how L’Arbre doesn’t already have a Michelin star — it absolutely deserves one. The entire experience was flawless. The chef himself is present throughout the evening, caring and passionate, personally explaining the menu. The staff is equally attentive and warm, making you feel truly welcomed. Every dish was a highlight: the Angus beef was a delicacy, perfectly cooked; even the simple salad and fries were elevated to something exceptional. The filet of turbot was sublime, especially with its rich and flavorful sauce. And the desserts… works of art. The fraisier was unbelievably light, and for chocolate lovers, the royal is next level. A special mention for the kindness of the team: I mistakenly booked for the next day, but the chef didn’t say a word — he just quietly found us a table. I only realized the error later when I got a confirmation message for the following night. Truly an unforgettable dining experience. Bravo to the whole team!

Haven’t been to the restaurant (yet!) but the bar is great, especially during sunset - the stuff and music are nice, the drinks are quite expensive but generous. A great place to start a party or to bring your friends from outside of Montpellier, as the bar is one of its kind in the city, and the architecture of the building is definitely standing out.

A very nice restaurant located in a beautiful section of Montpellier. The service was excellent and the staff welcoming and helpful. My wife ordered the ris de veau and I the langue du boeuf. Both were excellent. I highly recommend the langue, it was prepared perfectly. The ambiance was nice, but a little austere. Quality versus price, excellent. Worth a detour.
Ulises Sotomayor★☆☆☆☆
The aperol spritz sucked. I think they used cheap prosecco. You pay for the view and low quality drinks.

Went out of my way to visit this iconic and architecturally significant condo building. One of the most interesting and unique buildings I have ever witnessed in-person.

Fantastic building from the outside. Montpellier has great architecture but this one was the most surprising and amazing.
Graham Johnson★☆☆☆☆
Nice ambience, but service and food are dreadful. I ordered lamb, and they brought a fish dish, which I sent back. The lamb came 10 minutes later, burnt on the outside and raw on the inside. When I complained, they clearly weren't surprised or bothered. I then ordered coffee with milk, and they couldn't manage to get that right either. What was supposed to be a nice meal for the two of us was ruined. I told them, in french, I wouldn't be coming back and got the gallic shrug.

We visited this bar and really liked the overall atmosphere. The place is nicely designed, and the music was great, creating a fun and enjoyable environment. However, once it got crowded, the experience was not as smooth. The staff seemed a bit understaffed, which meant it took quite a while to get our drinks. As for the cocktails, they didn’t fully meet our expectations. They felt quite diluted, with a lot of ice and not much of an alcohol presence. We also ordered some tequila shots, and unfortunately, they gave a similar impression of being watered down. Overall, it’s a nice spot for the vibe and music, but there’s definitely room for improvement when it comes to drink quality and service during busy times.

Went on Friday 11th October The bread (pita and baguette) were still cold from fridge (or freezer). The wrost fries I ever had in my life. All bowl look huge but there is not much hummus, fries, tzaziki in it. The entire table was disappointed by the food. Atmosphere was great, DJ killed it 👏 Waiters with a lot of energy 🩵 Will give them an other chance soon

Hidden gem in Montpellier. My favourite place to go, eat, drink and chill on the rooftop terrace with the amazing staff. 5* h’apple!
Gary Methven★★★★★
I loved this place, a sun drenched terrace on the 4th floor of the Lafayette Galleries end of the shopping centre. Would be a brilliant place for breakfast, but we went in the middle of the day for the best tasting duck in Montpellier which was the plat de jour and very well priced. The service was spectacular, despite being busy with people as the waiter was cheerful helpful and spoke English. With the umbrellas, heat and gentle breeze, the ambiance was great too. One very special touch was the icy glasses of beer, much appreciated on this warm day. Well done to the chef and staff for a great dining experience!

This hotel was great, very clean and comfortable. The staff were friendly, welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. The rooms were cleverly designed with kitchen facilities such as fridge, dishwasher and microwave plus all the cooking equipment, cutlery and crockery you could need to make a meal. There was a restaurant, room service and breakfast available but also places to eat in walking distance. There’s also a small pool and rooftop bar. A tram stops outside to go to Montpellier but we walked and it took 20-25 minutes - not particularly scenic until you get nearer to central Montpellier. We were able to leave our luggage all day while we went into Montpellier before an evening flight. It’s very convenient for the airport - 15 minutes in a taxi and 12 euros. All in all Miranove was very good and very reasonably priced.

From the moment we arrived at Reception we were met by Julia. She was absolutely amazing, friendly and so professional. She went out of her way to make our stay fantastic. Booked the restaurant so we could celebrate our 50th anniversary with good food. She took time to show us how and where to get the tram, where to go for the best of Montpellier. Julia keep up your wonderful friendly service. You are an excellent asset for this Hotel. Ivan and I wish you the best and hope you are appreciated. The room was lovely and really big and clean. Fabulous huge fluffy towels and a clean bathroom. Breakfast was great, nice choices and great coffee. Loved the tram right outside the hotel. Took us to all the sights etc etc and so easy. We were sad to leave today but will hopefully e back again.

Loved the service and the food and cocktail was also served fast, and were yummy! Very calm and a good option if you stay at the hotel ( can dine either on the terrace but also inside )

My sister and I came by Bikube for dinner and what an amazing experience. The food was amazing, the wine (selected graciously by the chef) was incredible. The atmosphere in the courtyard was relaxed and cozy. Service was equally as great! The staff was kind and the chef was happily helpful in finding the right wine for our meal. All in all a great experience. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a place for a great meal (and a little more) in Montpellier.

The hotel itself is nice, but the brunch we had was inedible and super expensive. 27 euro each for mushy sandwiches, super sweet pancakes, something described as a pita that was about a half cup of yogurt on a soft roll (also soggy). Maybe other meals are better.

Really good food, nice team and especially for halloween nicely decorated. We extremeley enjoyed our dinner, we came from the Bikube Appartment.

The panoramic terrace was closed at 5 PM today, even though the sign displayed off-season opening hours of 10 AM to 7 PM. The least they could do is display accurate information (reason/duration of closure, so we know whether to come back later or not).

A wonderful evening and a great cocktail! Perhaps it would have been more appreciated at €1 less.

A disgrace in terms of accessibility for disabled people; half the elevators are out of order, you have to call a number that doesn't answer to get in, it's truly pathetic that it's been like this for months, with the old, useless disabled access sign outside that only gives false information. In short, avoid it at all costs!

It's more on the noisy party side, with indoor and outdoor tables. Dishes are fairly small, tapas-type. The cocktails tasted good but contained very little alcohol, if any at all. Inside, there were small flies around the table and a funky smell. Of course, no English menu, no wifi, so not really foreign-friendly.

Went by chance with my partner, was surprised at the atmosphere - very lively, lots of people! Yet the food was really good, and it arrived in time - there was no extra waiting time 🙂 overall would recommend!

We were invited for a birthday party in that place, we have mixed feelings about the place. I wouldn’t recommend this venue for birthdays. My friends and I were very upset with the organization. We had seen the staff on other occasions putting on hats and bringing flames around the tables, which we assumed was part of a birthday celebration. However, we found out that this is just something the restaurant does every night at 11:00 PM and not related to birthdays at all. Regarding the birthday cake, we learned too late that you need to reserve it 48 hours in advance. Despite this misunderstanding, my friend asked for the birthday gesture, but it wasn’t possible, even though the cake arrived just before 11:00 PM. Beyond that, the food was underwhelming. The tapas we ordered were bland, and the drinks were off. I ordered a Piña Colada, but it tasted strange with passion fruit, which I hadn’t requested. The atmosphere was lively, but also unbearably loud. Even when we were singing "Happy Birthday," we couldn’t hear ourselves over the noise. Overall, I wouldn’t recommend celebrating your birthday here. The hats and dances are part of their regular routine, not a special birthday touch.
Kirill Maksimkin★★★★☆
Food is tasty and I like it but the place was really crowded. At one moment it became so load (talking and music playing there) so we could barely hear each other.

JOST Hotel Montpellier is a vibrant and stylish hotel with a unique personality. The modern rooms are comfortable and thoughtfully designed, while the lively bar and restaurant create a welcoming atmosphere. The generous breakfast buffet is an excellent way to start the day. Throughout the hotel, everything appears clean, fresh and well maintained. If you're looking for a contemporary hotel with character and a relaxed vibe, JOST is an excellent choice for a stay in Montpellier.
Thomas Altenburger★★★★★
Breakfast was excellent, with a wide variety of options to choose from... like different types of bread and spreads, cereals, pancakes, croissants, yogurts, and more. Actually, the breakfast buffet felt comparable to that of a higher-end hotel, so I haven't seen hostels where you get so much to eat. The restaurant and bar have a great atmosphere, making it a pleasant place to relax. The background music (a mix of chill-out, pop, and house) was nice too. You can also order food there in the evening. I ordered a pizza, which I really enjoyed. The location is very convenient as well, being close to the railway station. In the dorm itself, the hallway outside of the sleeping room was a bit noisy, so at night you should not be too loud in order to not disturb the others.
Carol H★★★★★
I stayed at Jost in Montpellier for 4 nights at the end of December. I am a mature solo traveler and really appreciate that Jost invests in good mattresses for the travellers who chose to stay in the dorms. I always have a good sleep at a Jost location. The staff at Jost are great. Helpful and friendly. The hostel is a few minutes walk from the train station on a walkable grade and there is a good grocery store close by. It is a 15 minute walk to town but there are trams close by too. The dorm beds are spacious and comfortable. Great blackout curtains and all plugs worked. The guest kitchen was a bit of a mess when I first arrived but it was the holiday season and they fixed the problem as soon as it was mentioned. Kitchen dishes and cutlery was in short supply. Overall, Jost Hostel is a very good safe place to stay while visiting Montpellier.
Harry Johnson★★★★☆
A modern and lively hotel with a good location near the train station and city center. Rooms are clean and tidy but often quite small, so it’s better suited for short stays. The strongest impression comes from the common areas and design, while noise and occasional crowds can be an issue for light sleepers.
irina lezaic★★☆☆☆
We stayed at Jost Hotel two times both in the 8 people dorm. Once for a night where the room was in good condition and the ac was working fine. On the second stay for two nights we had bedbugs in our bed, we reported it to the receptionist and later filed a complaint through their Website. Jost never responded. I'm dissapointed in the service that was provided, bedbugs caused us a lot of hastle and mental strain and our issues was ignored.

Cool, boho chique diner and hangout with a variety of foods, catering for vegan to meat lovers. Drinks also available from non alcoholic to alcoholic. Easy, relaxed vibe, great for a summer evening, Friday night vibe. Lots of variety. Music is great, service is friendly, prices are fair and quality is spot on. Well worth a visit.

Very pleasant place, there are halls for all tastes. Flat, paid parking, surprise! I entered the gates were open, I had to go back to get a ticket at the entrance, no answer on the intercom, really a shame! And I do to pay 25 euros !

Given the fact that this a place for french fries (frites), these were actually decent, no salt at all but this is preference. The real issue was with the croquette à la Crevette (5.50€). Not sure if these are frozen pre-done products, but the quality was horrible. Sauce in side is like an unflavored white creme with the most small and tasteless shrimp. As shown in the photos. If you are going to buy overpriced french fries, sure go for it. Do avoid the other products as they are tasteless and overpriced.

This is a "must" place if you are coming to Montpellier, you can find a lot of nationalities in a warm and comfy place. Not expensive , close to the city, you can have a good meal or just drink. You should give it a try! ( note: my pictures are from the Mexican restaurant in the hall , called Manita)

Tips for Choosing the Right Rooftop Cafe

Selecting the perfect elevated spot requires a bit of local knowledge. The time of day, the direction of the sun, and the specific vibe you are chasing will drastically alter your experience. To help you maximize your time above the city, we have compiled a few practical strategies used by locals to secure the best seats and the best light.

Consider the Sun and Shade: The Mediterranean sun is beautiful but intense. If you are visiting during the midday hours between 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM, look for terraces that advertise retractable awnings, pergolas, or natural shade from surrounding trees. Conversely, if you are chasing a tan, south-facing terraces in the late afternoon are ideal.

Check the Wind Conditions: Montpellier is occasionally swept by the Mistral and Tramontane winds. While these winds clear the sky and provide stunning visibility, they can make a high terrace uncomfortable. If the wind is picking up, choose a location that is nestled within the historic center rather than a completely exposed rooftop on the outskirts.

Time Your Visit for "Golden Hour": The hour before sunset is universally the most magical time on a rooftop. The light turns the limestone buildings a warm honey color. However, this is also the busiest time. Arrive 30 to 45 minutes before sunset to secure a railing seat, or call ahead to ask about reservation policies for the terrace specifically.

Look Beyond the Menu: A great rooftop cafe is defined by its atmosphere, but the best ones back it up with substance. Check if the venue roasts its own coffee or partners with local artisans. If you are going for drinks, ask if they use fresh fruits and herbs from the local markets rather than pre-made syrups. Quality at altitude should match quality at ground level.

Understand the "Consumption" Rule: In France, particularly in cafes with a view, you are paying for the real estate. Do not expect to sit for three hours with a single glass of tap water. It is customary and polite to order at least one drink or snack per person. If you plan to work remotely, confirm with the staff that laptops are allowed on the terrace, as some upscale venues restrict them during dinner service.

The beauty of Montpellier’s cafe scene lies in its accessibility. You do not need to be a guest at a five-star hotel to enjoy a view of the city’s architectural tapestry. Most of these terraces are open to the public, welcoming anyone who appreciates the simple pleasure of looking down on the world for a while.

As the city continues to grow and modernize, the contrast between the ancient stone and contemporary design becomes more pronounced. These rooftops offer the perfect vantage point to appreciate that evolution. Whether you choose a hidden garden in the Écusson or a sleek terrace overlooking the Lez River, you are guaranteed a perspective of Montpellier that few get to see.
