10 Best Vegetarian Restaurants in Montpellier

Montpellier has quietly become one of the most exciting cities in southern France for plant-based and vegetable-forward dining. While the region is historically known for meat-heavy dishes like cassoulet, the city’s large student population and Mediterranean climate have fueled a demand for fresh, creative, and health-conscious cooking. Today, vegetarians and vegans can eat remarkably well here without compromising on flavor or authenticity.

The local dining scene blends traditional French technique with global influences, from Lebanese mezze to modern fusion bowls. Many restaurants now work directly with organic farms in the nearby Languedoc countryside, ensuring that seasonal produce takes center stage. This shift means you are no longer limited to a sad side salad or a plain margherita pizza when dining out.

What makes Montpellier stand out is its walkable medieval center, L’Écusson, where many of the best vegetarian-friendly spots are clustered. You can easily spend a day hopping between cozy cafés, elegant bistros, and vibrant market-driven kitchens. Whether you are a strict vegetarian, a flexitarian, or simply looking for a lighter meal, the city offers impressive variety.

The following list focuses on restaurants that consistently prioritize vegetables, legumes, grains, and dairy-free alternatives. Several are entirely vegetarian or vegan, while others are omnivore establishments with outstanding dedicated vegetarian menus. Each entry was selected based on ingredient quality, creativity, consistency, and overall dining experience.

You will find options for every budget and occasion, from quick weekday lunches to relaxed weekend dinners. Some places are ideal for a romantic evening, while others are perfect for a casual meal with friends. No matter where you go, you can expect a warm welcome and a genuine commitment to plant-based cooking.

Below is a curated selection of the ten best vegetarian restaurants in Montpellier right now. These are not ranked in a strict order of superiority, as each excels in a different niche. Use this guide to find the spot that best matches your mood, location, and cravings.

We had a delicious three course lunch at this lovely family run restaurant, the food was nutritious and delicious with inventive flavour combinations and leaves you feeling happy and satisfied. The little Vietnamese pancakes, the freekah bowl and the cauliflower and paneer curry were all delicious. The home made sparkling kombucha was also very good. It’s so rare to find these kind of flavours in France, just wish we lived closer !

The food here was out of this world. Everything was just perfectly made and the atmosphere was so lovely. I wanted to hug the chef but didn’t want to creep her out (she served our food and was extremely gracious). My photos don’t do it justice - it was creative vegan food and delicious and really one of the best meals I’ve had. I recommend to make reservations!
Foteini Paschalidou★★★★☆
Everything is well made and home made, however the portion are just ok and we dont have great apetite in general. So people who are really hungry probably will not be enough. Also for 2 hot dogs and one ravioli , 1 beer and 2 juces we paid 72 euros. It was a bit expensive for what it was offered. The atmosphere and service were nice. We had dinner there

The meal was incredible and the food was very creative and fun! This meal blew my mind. The cost was super inexpensive and such a great value compared to fine dining meals I’ve had in the US. I had the wine paring with the 6 course meal and it was a full 5 glasses of wine. I had a great time and the service was wonderful. I will be dreaming about artichoke resembling a scallion. Wow. Highly recommend and I can’t wait to return!
jessae brown★★★★★
We went to Sensible for our anniversary dinner and it will definitely be on our short list of places to go for special events. The menu was incredibly inventive, audacious, well crafted, and delicious. The entrées and the desserts really shined. We opted for a wine pairing and to try to cocktail of the day and I'm so glad we did. 4 local wines that were exquisite (yay for learning more local productions!) and the gin, ginger, and celery juice cocktail was fresh and zingy. As I said, we will definitely be back. The service was friendly and prompt and while the music was not exactly to our tastes, the atmosphere was definitely curated and intentional. I hope more vegetarians (and non-vegetarians who appreciate a truly gifted culinary chef) try Sensible and keep it on their short lists too.
Patrick Nichols★★★★★
This restaurant is designed for the joy of eating and experiencing flavors you will never find again. Tried the tasting menu paired with drinks that were perfectly matched to the theme of the evening. Sit back and enjoy a finely curated journey... And plant-based?!? 🤯

delicious vegan food! so lucky to have found this. i had the 3x choose your own plate option, with a quiche, tart and zucchini salad. really worth your money. the staff were so friendly and spoke english for us which was much appreciated 🙂 thank you so much
Chania Baldwin★★★★★
I loved this place! I had the joy bowl, which was full of healthy foods high in nutritional value and in taste. I also had the blueberry cheesecake, this was good for the soul as it was delicious! Usually vegan cheesecake can be difficult, but this was incredible (maybe a little too sweet, but this is the point of dessert!). My friend also tried the cherry tiramisu and said it was delicious. Staff are super friendly and speak English too. Would recommend!

Wow. This was truly a surprise. When I looked at the menu for brunch I wasn’t sure it’d be nice. Some of the combinations were quirky. (Sweet potato pancakes) But everything was delicious and wonderful. So delicious that I bought the recipe book. (Which I’d strongly recommend) Service was warm, food was exceptional and the restauranteur is both beautiful and gifted. Really really recommended! A little gem in Montpellier
Ikey Greene★★★★★
A wonderful vegan breakfast place! The food was delicious and the staff so nice. The place is very clean and it’s nice to sit inside or outside. We had the waffles with scrambled tofu and the tart with soup, as well as the pancakes. They were all perfectly done. I ordered jasmine tea and got a huge mug of tea. 🍵 We went there twice cause we loved it so much. ☺️

Finding a gluten-free restaurant is not easy at all in France! I found this cafe by chance, and I had brunch over there! I noticed that all of their products are gluten-free, vegan, and homemade! Such a blessing in Montpellier! The cafe is so cozy with amazing service and the girl who was giving me the service, was so kind, with a beautiful smile to make my day even more blessed! I’ll go there again and I recommend it to everyone as well!

Delicious food, quick service, quiet and comfortable atmosphere. Nice amount of options, and budget friendly. Will be back! 🙂

Good tasting falafel, good volume, plenty of sauces. Note that the 10 falafels are pretty small (but the price is accordingly). Nice guy working there. The sweet potato fries and potato fries were too greasy to my liking, I wish they would make it a bit healthier! Thank you!

Clàudia Aguiló★★★★★
Excellent food, location and service. This restaurant is located in a very cute street and you can sit either outside or inside. We all loved our food. As I have celiac, this place was particularly wonderful for me. There is absolutely no risk of cross contamination. Even their beers are gluten free.
Jasmine Prisciandaro-Wood★★★★☆
Welcoming staff, very cute location, food was tasty and gluten free! Very nice nachos with good cheese sauce and good flavour. Easy lunch menu option that was nice to share between 2 for a light meal.
Farrah Ford★★★★★
Highly recommend going here!!! It is located on the famous pretty street with the coloured steps and there is indoor and outdoor seating. We ordered the vegan nachos, chips and guacamole and the curry Dahl and everything was delicious. They have a whole vegan menu which is amazing. A wonderful spot, food, service and variety!
Ivan Del Duca★★★★★
Being coeliac (or travelling with a coeliac son, like in my case) in France is a real nightmare. France is a wonderful country in every other respect, but its culture around managing coeliac disease still has a long way to go. Even grocery shopping is hard, since very few producers clearly label the absence of gluten, and cross-contamination isn't even on the radar. With restaurants it's worse: not only is it difficult to explain that this isn't a fad, but they'll swear there's no gluten and then fry the chips in the same oil they used for breaded food. So imagine the joy of discovering an entirely gluten-free restaurant like Takkito! Often that joy fades fast, because places making this choice don't measure up to "normal" restaurants. Happily, that is absolutely not the case here. Takkito exceeded every expectation, with outstanding fusion cooking on every level, dishes and drinks where aromas and spices from all over the world take centre stage, used with taste and intelligence. What's more, unlike many gluten-free restaurants, around 90% of the menu is naturally gluten-free by design - built on rice, corn tortillas, potatoes and vegetables rather than on imitations of gluten-based staples like bread, focaccia or pasta. I don't live in Montpellier, sadly, but as a non-coeliac, I'd happily eat here every single day.
Gunnar Mein★★★★★
Amazing food and friendly people in one of the prettiest streets in town. Stopped here because it smelled so good I had to. Gluten-free. When you are ready to give French restraint and subtlety a break and go for and explosion of flavor and spice!

Optimistic Myself.★★★★★
As a non-veg person, I liked the food items here. It is tasty and affordable. Nice comfy seating inside with toilette facility available. They accept card and cash payments. The order to serving took less than 10 minutes and it was really a great experience. The taste was exceptional considering that the dish is vegen. The entry is wheelchair friendly and it's a nice place.
Emilia Martinez★★★★★
The best vegetarian kebab I have ever had in my life. I usually eat regular kebabs, but after this one, I honestly don’t think I would ever go back. THE BEST IN THE WORLD. Not only was the food incredible, but the service was outstanding. I’m a foreigner and I don’t speak French, and the guy at the counter was so patient with me. He explained everything and helped me choose — and his recommendation was absolutely perfect. I paid €14.50 for fries, a kebab, and water. Totally worth it. The food was amazing, not heavy at all, and I left feeling super full but light at the same time. Highly, highly recommend. If you’re not that hungry, just the kebab is more than enough.
Jayne Robertson★★★★★
Absolutely the best vegan kebab we have ever had. Amazing service and super friendly. Let us practice our French 😂
JP Bader★★★★★
What an incredible, friendly, tasty, and wonderful place. The food was divine, the staff was sincere and kind, and the overall place is perfect. And don't forget to get a milkshake. They're magnifique! Definitely coming back next time I'm in Montpelier
Chris Preston★★★★★
Very friendly staff, it gets 5 stars because the place is 100% Vegan and the food was tasty, don't like the reference to meat dishes tho', but this place and Greenlab are no where as good as We Love Felafel in Brighton UK, all similar concept eateries, that's why I am comparing them.

Fairly decent burgers. Although, steak is beyond meat but the preparation and ingredients are excellent. There sauces are great too, white sauce is really good. We wanted to try the dessert as well, but the burgers itself were filling. Environment and the service is topnotch. We were greeted well and server explained the menu as well Overall good experience.
Sina★★★★★
That is vegan heaven 🪽incredible burger and panna cotta 🥰 cute Ambiente, fast service and a really nice server. Just perfect 🥰
Laura Carolina★★★★★
I enjoyed the 'fish' burger and fries, and the mousse de marrons with speculoos crumb topping was soooo good. My friend liked the mozza sticks and mini-dessert trio.
Emily Krauzowicz★★★★★
We visited today and we’ve both had a big gorilla burger which tasted just great. I can also highly recommend the mozzarella sticks (I don’t think I’ve ever had better ones). The strawberry chocolate great was also perfect. The service was great as well. Our dogs were welcomed too - they got water as well
Dario Scopacasa★★★★★
Excellent little restaurant, found while looking for a vegan place. My wife is vegan, I'm neither vegan nor vegetarian; we ordered two different hamburgers with fries, to our complete satisfaction. I can't remember eating a better hamburger than the one I had here, not even if I include meat ones in the stats. Desserts were nice and a bit surprising in their excellent texture despite the absence of eggs or butter. Very reasonable prices and very well-mannered staff. I'd recommend this place to anyone, regardless of the fact that they may be vegan, vegetarian or not.

Tips for Choosing a Great Vegetarian Meal in Montpellier

Finding excellent vegetarian food in Montpellier is easy once you know how to navigate the local dining culture. A few practical strategies will help you avoid tourist traps, discover hidden gems, and ensure your meal is both satisfying and authentically Mediterranean. Keep these points in mind whether you are visiting for a weekend or settling in for a longer stay.

First, always check the daily specials board. Many French bistros and cafés feature a plat du jour that changes based on what is fresh at the market that morning. Even restaurants without a dedicated vegetarian menu often offer a creative vegetable-based special. Asking about the plat végétarien du jour is a simple way to unlock options that never appear on the printed menu.

Second, do not overlook Middle Eastern and North African restaurants. Montpellier has a strong Mediterranean and Maghreb influence, which means you can find excellent falafel, hummus, couscous with vegetables, tajine, and mezze platters. These cuisines naturally center legumes, grains, and seasonal vegetables, making them reliable choices for vegetarians.

Third, time your visit around the lunch service. Many high-quality restaurants offer a more affordable fixed-price lunch menu, known as a formule midi. This often includes a starter, main course, and sometimes dessert at a fraction of the dinner price. It is the best way to experience upscale vegetarian cooking without overspending.

Fourth, be specific about your dietary needs when booking or ordering. In France, “vegetarian” can sometimes be interpreted loosely, and fish or meat-based stocks may appear in soups and sauces. If you avoid all animal products, clearly say “végétalien” for vegan or “sans produits laitiers, sans œufs” for dairy-free and egg-free. A polite, precise request will almost always be accommodated.

Fifth, pair your meal with a visit to a local market. The Halles Castellane and the Saturday market at Arceaux are excellent places to sample regional produce, cheeses, and baked goods. Shopping at these markets gives you a deeper appreciation for the ingredients that appear on Montpellier’s best vegetarian menus. It also helps you discover new fruits, vegetables, and herbs to seek out in restaurants.

Finally, do not be afraid to ask for a custom plate. French chefs are increasingly open to composing a dish from side vegetables, grains, and legumes, especially at smaller, independently owned restaurants. A warm smile and a simple request often result in a beautiful, off-menu creation that reflects the kitchen’s true skill.

Montpellier’s vegetarian dining scene continues to evolve, driven by a community that values sustainability, seasonality, and bold flavors. The city rewards curious eaters who are willing to wander beyond the main squares and explore the narrow side streets. Every neighborhood has something worth discovering, from tiny vegan bakeries to elegant plant-based tasting counters.

Whether you are a lifelong vegetarian or simply want to enjoy a few meat-free meals during your trip, you will find plenty of inspiration here. The best approach is to eat like a local: follow the seasons, trust the daily specials, and appreciate the simple pleasure of perfectly cooked vegetables. With this guide in hand, you are ready to experience the freshest, most creative vegetarian cooking Montpellier has to offer.
