10 Best Seafood Restaurants in Montpellier

Nestled just a few miles from the Mediterranean coast, Montpellier is a vibrant university city where history and modernity collide beautifully. While the region is often celebrated for its wine and pastoral landscapes, the city itself boasts a dynamic culinary scene that rivals much larger French metropolises. From the narrow, sun-drenched streets of the Écusson to the breezy esplanades near the Place de la Comédie, the air is often perfumed with the scent of garlic, saffron, and fresh shellfish.

The proximity to the Étang de Thau and the Gulf of Lion means that local chefs have access to some of the finest seafood in the country. Unlike landlocked cities, Montpellier’s menus are dictated by the tides and the morning catch, ensuring that what lands on your plate is remarkably fresh. Whether you are craving a simple platter of oysters or an elaborate bouillabaisse, the city offers a diverse range of options to suit every palate and budget.

Navigating the dining scene in a city known for its gastronomic pride can be overwhelming, especially for visitors seeking an authentic experience. You want to avoid the tourist traps with frozen fish and find the hidden gems where locals linger over long lunches. The key is to look for establishments that prioritize "pêche locale" (local catch) and have a reputation for respecting traditional French techniques.

This guide aims to cut through the noise and direct you to the very best seafood the city has to offer. We have considered not only the freshness of the ingredients but also the atmosphere, the quality of service, and the value for money. Whether you are looking for a romantic dinner spot or a lively lunch with friends, this list has something for everyone.

Montpellier’s dining culture is deeply rooted in the Mediterranean lifestyle, meaning meals are meant to be savored slowly. Seafood here is often prepared simply—grilled with herbs, drizzled with olive oil, or served raw with lemon—allowing the natural flavors to shine. It is this respect for the ingredient that defines the best kitchens in the city.

Below, you will find a curated selection of the top seafood destinations in Montpellier. These restaurants have been chosen for their commitment to quality, their unique takes on Mediterranean cuisine, and their ability to provide a memorable dining experience.

We were looking for a quick and decent dinner, driving around found this restaurant. It was very interesting, the fish was out on display raw to be picked. it looked fresh. We ordered two bufala salads and two mixed fish plates. We didn’t expect the flavor and quality we got. It was delicious 😋! Cost was low compared to the quantity and quality. I definitely recommend!

Great place, great value for money, no alcohol, dogs welcome.

Not a great neighbourhood, but the food was good, reasonably priced and very fresh. We got it to takeaway as we didnt feel comfortable eating in.

The food amazing even if i was sceptical first. Looks like shop when you can buy fish to eat. Service spoke only French. It was okay
David Izquierdo Azzouz★★★★★
I'm a very skeptical guy and I gotta say this has been a big positive surprise, fresh fish, great variety, fair prices, nice restaurant indoors (don't be fooled by the rather popular quarter), it's got AC, no flies, everything is clean and tidy as you'd expect in an A class restaurant, staff is very kind and attentive, shout out to the dinning hall waiters, Elias and the tall bearded guy, they even helped me in Spanish (my mother tongue) always with a smile, top service, I hope they'll keep the good job up, totally recommended 👍

Very friendly service and good seafood! It's just beside a road so it could be a bit noisy on the terrace side but normally you would be busy enjoying the food!

Had an amazing meal at Le Panier du Pêcheur! We went for a seafood platter with extra oysters and oh boy, did it not disappoint. When in Montpellier be sure to head down their way!

Best oysters I've ever had! We ordered 2 dozen oysters and they were prepared exceptionally well. Next time you're in Montpelier, this is the seafood lunch shop to visit.

My wife and I stumbled upon this gem when we visited in 2021. We are back and made a point of eating here. The menu is simple, only very fresh fish and the food is prepared expertly. The people are very friendly. This is where the locals in-the-know eat.

This is the best fish restaurant in Montpellier. We went there twice and tried shrimps, salmon and other fish. Everything is so fresh and delicious. Reservation is required because it is a small and popular place. Highly recommend this place for everyone who love fresh sea food.

Service is abhorrent. I was lured in by the positive reviews but I’m not sure what others see in this establishment. I walked in to the store and made my way towards the back as there was no one there to receive guests. I saw a bartender / waiter and asked her if I could have a table. Her reply was a curt “WAIT.” Excuse me but I believe you meant “please wait, I will be with you momentarily.” When I was seated, no menu is provided or any explanation about how the service / menu works. 5 mins later, the same lady comes around and slams down a bottle of water on my table. Not a single word. Does the same thing at another table. A few mins later, she brings in this big chalk board with menu items and slams in front of my table with no explanation. Again no single word. Was she just re-locating the menu board? If you dislike your job, find a new one! It’s like she was throwing a tantrum and taking out some issue on everyone. I soon realized that this place is a joke (at the very least the side that is masquerading as a restaurant with some resemblance of service) and decided to leave. It was not worth it to stick around to try the food. Clearly no respect for patrons so why should I believe the food is prepared with respect as well? Fellow travelers, you are forewarned.
Johannes Schertler★★★★★

Very nice place. Something truly new. I celebrated my birthday here and it was warm and welcoming. Special thanks to Axelle - our waitress on that day. The illumination and productions are amazing but there is still a chance to sit somewhere far form the most beautiful view. So I strongly recommend reservation in advance.
Anders Sjöberg★★★☆☆
Ok food, not more. Price vs food not optimal. You only sit inside, pretty cool environment, but "American shopping mall"-setting. When paying by card we were forced to tip, even though it is included in price. Will not come back.
Chevind Appadoo★★★★★
We had a wonderful time at the restaurant, especially Axelle who was very swift and professional serving our table. We recommend the experience.
Louise Maree★★☆☆☆
Unfortunately, this was a very disappointing experience. I specifically chose this restaurant hoping to enjoy fresh seafood, only to be told that fresh seafood had been removed from the menu. That was quite surprising and disappointing for a seafood restaurant. The atmosphere also wasn't to my taste. The restaurant is kept very dark due to the light projections on the walls, which created a somewhat gloomy and slightly unsettling ambience rather than a welcoming dining experience. To make matters worse, the ladies' restroom had no toilet paper, which reflects poorly on the overall attention to detail. Overall, I was not impressed with either the food offering or the experience. I would not recommend this restaurant and would not return.
Pascal Hennig★★★★★
I really loved it here. It was a super Ambiente and the food was super delicious with a great service from Margo ! Merci for this night

Fresh seafood. Gambas and Tuna are flavory. Not a typical restaurant dinning experience, more like a food truck-pub hybrid dinning experience. The food is unforgettable.

Grabbed a lucky little table for two. Menu is quality seafood from top to toe. I had cod liver to start & my wife the cod ceviche. Mains were swordfish and an amazing sea bass. All accompanied with a Loire Sauvignon blanc that was perfect. Staff were top class. It was a little cool - pack a jumper; it’s worth it. Will be back for seconds.
Alexandra Simionov★★★★★
We had a delicious meal here and really enjoyed everything we tried. The razor clams, mussels, sardines and snails were all fresh, flavorful and beautifully prepared. The desserts were also excellent. We had the chocolate cake and the tarte tatin, so good! And the wine, oh, the wine! Many thanks also for the great service 🙂 Looking forward to be back.
Shannon Monaghan★★★★★
Thankfully even on a busy night we were able to snag a 2 top without a reservation. Exceptional meal that really showcased the freshness and locality of seafood! This all was accompanied by a great wine list! Truly enjoyed the meal and appreciated the great staff.
Paul Talbert★★★★★
Everything was amazing, one of the best tuna appetizers I've ever had. Fish was perfectly cooked and the sides were amazing. Service is friendly and helpful. Thanks for a fantastic meal!

La Morue was a blast, again! Every once in a while when we come to Montpellier, we visit this restaurant and it is always as nice as the first time! Their food is well balanced and highlights the flavours of the seafood just right🙏 their cold seafood platter (you can compose it yourself) is also very tasty and qualitative when it comes to freshness. Definitely to recommend!

Sheryl Kam★★★★★
Beautiful restaurant with a beautiful menu. My friends who are locals took us here for an amazing and fulfilling meal. The burrata was great, and the duck confit was lovely. The walnut pasta was only okay though, lacked flavor. A friend put their burrata into their pasta which was interesting. I had a bite of the octopus and it was supper good!
Bruce★★★★☆
The food and atmosphere are top notch! I suggest getting here before 12 because soon after there is a massive line to get seated. This is a place to practice patients if you are used to speedy servers. The food is worth the wait!
Dawid Stachura★★★★★
Special attention must be given to the quality of service, as it is often overlooked. The waitstaff here is an extremely tight-knit, well-organized, and incredibly fast team. Everyone is friendly, very helpful, and perfectly coordinated. Despite the high volume of customers every day, they are always impeccable. If I were the owner, I would give everyone a raise. In today’s world, good waiters are truly priceless. As for the food, it is one of a kind. I visited several times over a few days, and every time the dishes were delicious and carefully prepared. Special praise goes to the duck 🦆 — great job, chefs! If I lived in Montpellier, I would be a regular every day.
Edward Jorczyk★★★★★
Such a wonderful find! Rosemarie is in a wonderful setting with friendly staff and great food at reasonable prices. Highly recommended. Make a reservation via their website and you can avoid the long wait line. Just go to the right side of the door when arriving and say "J'ai une reservation"!
Mx★★★★★
Really good food, would recommend to try the buratta and the duck. Fast service, the deserts were so and so. Book in advance from the site so you don’t have to wait at the line.

Tips for Choosing the Best Seafood in Montpellier

Selecting a seafood restaurant in a coastal city requires a bit of local knowledge. While the restaurants listed above are guaranteed to satisfy, understanding how the local industry works will help you order with confidence and avoid common pitfalls. Here are a few strategies to ensure you get the freshest and most authentic dining experience possible during your visit.

1. Look for the "Pêche Locale" Label
Many high-quality restaurants in Montpellier proudly display signage indicating they serve "pêche locale" (local catch). This means the fish comes from small-scale fishermen operating out of nearby ports like Le Grau-du-Roi or Sète. Choosing a restaurant that supports local fishermen not only ensures freshness but also supports the regional economy.

2. Order the Fish of the Day
Avoid ordering a specific fish that is not in season. Instead, ask your server for the "poisson du moment" or "arrivage du jour." These are the fish that arrived that morning and are often prepared as a simple grilled dish. This is the best way to taste the true flavor of the Mediterranean without paying for frozen imports.

3. Don’t Skip the Shellfish
While fish is a staple, Montpellier is uniquely positioned near the Étang de Thau, which is famous for its oysters and mussels. The Bouzigues oysters are a regional specialty with a distinct, nutty flavor due to the lagoon’s nutrients. If you are a fan of raw seafood, a plateau de fruits de mer (seafood platter) is a must-try.

4. Be Wary of "Tourist Menus" near Place de la Comédie
While the main square is beautiful, the restaurants directly surrounding it often cater to tourists and may serve lower-quality, pre-prepared seafood at inflated prices. For a more authentic experience, wander a few blocks into the narrow streets of the Écusson or head toward the Antigone district where locals dine.

5. Check the Menu for Seasonal Vegetables
A good seafood restaurant in France will pair its fish with seasonal produce. If you see winter vegetables on the menu in August, or tomatoes in January, it is a sign the kitchen may be cutting corners on ingredient sourcing. The best restaurants change their menus monthly to reflect what is available at the local markets.

6. Trust the Lunch Formulas
If you are on a budget but still want high-quality seafood, visit a top restaurant during lunch hours. Most fine dining establishments offer a "Formule Midi" (lunch set menu) at a fraction of the dinner price. This allows you to sample Michelin-level cooking without the hefty evening bill.

Montpellier is a city that rewards the curious eater. By stepping away from the main tourist arteries and seeking out the places where the locals gather, you open yourself up to a world of flavor that is deeply tied to the Mediterranean Sea. Whether it is a simple plate of grilled sardines or an elegant seafood tasting menu, the city delivers with a consistency that few others can match.

As you plan your culinary journey, remember that the best meals here are often the most spontaneous. Allow yourself to linger, ask the staff for their recommendations, and pair your meal with a crisp local Picpoul de Pinet. In Montpellier, the sea is never far away, and with the right choice of restaurant, you can taste it in every bite.
