In a heatwave the shop had almost no water bottles in a fridge but had an abundance of fridges filled with every kind of junk like energy drinks and sugar packed juices. Absolutely ridiculous. At least their aircon was working but barely. The very next day after the heatwave when it was still about 32 degrees they either turned it down or completely off, in case they waste a penny on staff or customer welfare. On top of this, I had to show them the inside of my bag along another unfortunate customer that got profiled along with me for completely "random" reasons, even though it's my second time in Nantes as a tourist and have probably spent thousands of euros in this town. When I explained to my partner what was taking place the till lady reassured me it was not that they though I could be stealing which of course begs the queastion as to what they actually wanted to see in my bag.

I was scanning my dinner for this evening, and had just selected pay by card when a staff member demanded to search my totally empty bag that I brought with me to avoid using a plastic bag. I have never experienced this in a supermarket before. The security guards then surrounded me to try and intimidate me, even though they have no right to search people or bags. I left the goods on the till and left. Not sure why a thief would take five hand carried items to self scan if they were upto no good with a bag full of stolen champagne or whatever rather than just pay for a 20 cents bottle of water, or just walk out. Talk about insulting and punishing the innocent. It does not appear Carrefour believes in the customer is always right, instead treating them as criminals. Also deeply unfair of the employer to make the check out supervisor confront entirely innocent, but rightfully insulted, customers. Disgraceful organisation.
Hey Lo★☆☆☆☆
Boarded up (WHY???), yet open. The fist supermarket I have seen in my life on the 1st floor (WHY??) The entrance hall smelling of wee (!!!) while you want to buy something to eat or drink!! Some trglodyte riding electric scooter up moving stairs with one of the glass barriers SMASHED. A fairy near-Apocaliptic picture? No exaggeŕation, though. So what do you say?

I am from Spain and came to visit Nantes this month, and I come to this carrefour almost everyday because it is close to my hostel. But I am tired of the discriminatory treatment of the cashiers. Almost always I come, they ask me to open the small backpack that I wear on my back to see if I have robed something, but I don't see them doing the same with many other people that are wearing backpacks too. It is very humiliating and this has never happened to me anywhere in the world when I travel. I am assuming this discriminatory treatment is due to being a foreigner with tattoos.

Cool place but surprisingly no drinking water facility. Strange that the Nantes city talks a lot about ecology but for an essential like drinking water, you will have to buy plastic water bottles!!

I've been a few times in the Shopping Mall to buy goods and cosmetics. It wasn't bad, per se, but I would take attention on stuffiness. Also, there are long queues in the goods supermarket. I'm think it is not a problem of SM. It is just for your information.

I love it there!
I've been here for 3 weeks and it is for sure my favorite place to get groceries. I prefer Intermarché over carrefour.
The only hick is that the fish section smells SO BAD like it's not even funny.

I have no idea how the health inspector hasn't shut this grocery store down yet. The "fresh" produce is often moldy and we need to go out of our way to get a refund. Their selection of food here is limited and most of the stuff is not good quality. They can't even seem to properly remove feathers from chicken...
Go to leclerc, or better yet the farmers market. Monoprix gives a bad name to France.

A huge hypermarket with basically everything you'd ever need in your daily life. The selection is super good and prices are down-to-earth (unlike e.g. Casino ...). There are lots of good promotions as well.
You'll find a service desk for fresh fish and meet, I don't remember if there's one for cheese, but their cheese selection seems good anyway.
My only complaint is the size of the shop. You'll easily get your daily 2k steps done by just walking between the shelves, if you don't plan your visit well (milk for example might be hundreds of meters away from the eggs). But that's what you get with these kinds of mega markets.
Overall a good shop!

Overpriced goods, sometimes almost expired.
You'll definitely buy damaged products or products who's sell by date are well over due. Bought broken eggs and for some reason, they refused to change them. I was told that they'll be willing to take responsibility if anything happened to me 😥😥😥. Threw the eggs away and went to another store to buy my eggs. There're a lot of inconsistency either with prices or sell by dates. I do enjoy some of their products but...

How to Choose the Right Supermarket in Nantes
Selecting a store isn’t just about proximity; it is about matching the shopping experience to your cooking habits and schedule. The following practical advice will help you shop smarter, reduce waste, and discover the best that the local food scene has to offer without overspending.
Understand the Brand Tiers
French supermarkets generally fall into distinct categories. Hypermarkets (like E.Leclerc or Carrefour) offer the widest range and lowest prices for bulk shopping. Supermarkets (like Super U or Intermarché) are mid-sized and neighborhood-friendly, while convenience stores (Carrefour City, Monop’ Daily) are best for top-up shops despite higher markups. Knowing this prevents you from overpaying for a full weekly shop at a convenience store.
Check the Fresh Produce Counter Times
In many Nantes supermarkets, the fish and butcher counters operate on specific schedules, often closing earlier than the main store or shutting down for lunch. If you are planning a special dinner requiring fresh seafood—perhaps a local bar (sea bass) or mussels from the Bouchot farms—visit before 7:00 PM or during the morning to ensure the full service is available and the selection hasn’t been picked over.
Look for "Produit en Loire-Atlantique" Labels
To truly shop like a local, keep an eye out for regional branding. Many stores in Nantes prominently feature products from the surrounding region, including sel de Guérande, Muscadet wine, mâche (lamb’s lettuce), and dairy from nearby Brittany. Shopping these items not only supports the local economy but usually guarantees a shorter supply chain and fresher taste.
Leverage Loyalty Cards and Drive Services
Almost every major chain in France offers a loyalty card that translates directly into cashback or vouchers on fuel and groceries. If you have a car, consider utilizing the "Drive" (click-and-collect) services offered by E.Leclerc, Carrefour, and Auchan. You order online, and they load the groceries into your trunk at no extra cost—this saves significant time and prevents impulse buying.
Be Aware of Sunday Trading Hours
Shopping schedules in Nantes change drastically on Sundays. While most large hypermarkets on the outskirts are closed or only open in the morning, many smaller city-center stores (like Monoprix or Carrefour City) remain open until midday or early afternoon. If you need to do a major shop on a Sunday, check the specific store hours in advance or plan to visit a local market instead.
The beauty of grocery shopping in Nantes lies in its balance between modern convenience and traditional French food culture. While the large hypermarkets offer unbeatable prices for pantry staples, the smaller markets and specialty stores provide the character and quality that define the region’s culinary identity.
Ultimately, the best supermarket is the one that fits seamlessly into your daily life. By understanding the layout of the city and the strengths of each chain, you can turn a mundane chore into an efficient, and perhaps even enjoyable, part of your week.
