Peñíscola’s coastline is a mosaic of golden sand, pebbled coves, and crystalline Mediterranean water, all watched over by the town’s famous medieval castle. Whether you are traveling with toddlers, seeking a romantic sunset spot, or planning an active day of snorkeling, this stretch of the Costa del Azahar has a beach tailored to your needs.
Most visitors are drawn to the postcard-perfect sweep of sand that curves beneath the old town, but venturing just a few minutes north or south reveals quieter, wilder stretches that feel a world away from the summer crowds. The local microclimate keeps the sea warm from late spring through early autumn, making Peñíscola a reliable choice for an extended beach holiday.
Accessibility is one of Peñíscola’s strongest selling points. The main urban beaches have ramps, showers, and lifeguard stations, while the more remote coves offer a rugged, natural escape for those willing to walk a little further with a beach bag over one shoulder.
Water quality across the municipality is consistently excellent, with many beaches holding Blue Flag status for their cleanliness, safety, and environmental management. Families can swim with confidence, and snorkelers will find clear visibility around the rocky headlands that frame the shoreline.
The town’s dual identity as a historic citadel and a modern resort means you can alternate between culture and relaxation without ever getting in a car. Morning castle tours, afternoon beach naps, and evening promenade strolls are the rhythm of a perfect Peñíscola day.
Local amenities are never far away, from chiringuito beach bars serving ice-cold horchata to rental kiosks offering sunbeds and parasols. Even in high season, the long, wide beaches absorb the crowds well, leaving space for everyone to spread out a towel.
Choosing the right beach depends on what you value most: convenience, scenery, water sports, or solitude. Below is a curated guide to the five best beaches in Peñíscola, each offering a distinct experience of this beautiful Valencian coastline.

Lovely looking beach, around near the Castle on the North beach it is extremely calm, barely a ripple. Very fine sand and miles of it too. We were there in November, so just walking tourists, but probably packed in summer we'd guess.

Landmark & Scenic Beach
This is a great beach with a view on the Castle. It is very impressive and nice. It has all the usual amenities, and is large and long in terms of beach. It is not very shallow so goes deep quite fast.
What sets this beach apart is the view. Not many beaches in Spain have such an amazing view like Peniscola on a beautiful Castle that seems to sit on the water.
Highly recommended beach!

Superb beach in all places! A perfect place for families to go for a day out or more. The beach also has views of the old town and Peñíscola Castle
Good bars and restaurants a stone throw away.
The ocean floor is extremely clear as the sand on this side becomes solidified and feels very solid and comfortable to walk on. You can see small/medium sized fish swimming amongst your feet and it feels really peaceful.
So good I'd recommend going to this beautiful town even if it was just for the beach, although the town is amazing.

Peñíscola beach on a cloudy, rainy day just hits different. There’s something so nostalgic about the mood, I loved it. Also picked up a bunch of souvenirs along the way.

What a lovely beach. We are used to big waves in the pacific but the calm consistent lapping of baby waves and shallow waters were warm and clear. The sand is soft and despite the amount of people a perfect beach day. We stayed in the castle walls which you CANNOT drive through, so you have to find parking in the lots and surrounding areas. Great restaurants along the beach! Lifeguards. Safe. Beach chairs and rentals. Paddle boards.

Beautiful beach with amazing views 😍❤️ Calm, cosy place for couples, families or friends.

We always use the south beach, it is usually very calm, also shallow for the young toddlers. The nearby facilities include a wide range of eating establishments, and the working port is alongside, you see all the fishing boats return at 1530 to 1600 weekdays, fitness apparatus on the beach for those so minded.

Great beach. Fantastic views. Has all amenities

Its a lovely little beach. Very quiet during the week. Gets busier the weekends but still not as busy as the main beach.
You need footwear it’s a bit rocky but Cristal clear.
I don’t know what the bad review is about, its a public free beach. There’s nothing you need or even could book.
Alex B★★★☆☆
Not worth snorkelling here as there are very few fishes, moreover visibility in the water is not great. Both the coves are right by the road with little space to lay towels. There is much better in the area!
Lind★☆☆☆☆
We went there, the safe keeper didn't let us in, we came all long way to here and she required us to reserve it some days before. I didn't know this before, nowhere it is written. That was really pity, I'd recommend to go other beaches instead of wasting time here
George Corway★★☆☆☆
Poor parking. Need good footwear due to very stoney beach and a lot of submerged rocks.

Perfect wild isolation....just what you need to feel free. Paradise of the shells, waves calling like mermaids to lose yourself in the depth of the sea..... simply exquisite!!! Go if you can! It's worth it!

Plage Nord

Enjoy life★★★★☆
Lovely beach crowded in the hot season but one of the most spectacular beaches in the region, with a five-kilometer stretch of fine, golden sand offering unparalleled views of the iconic Papa Luna Castle. This magnificent setting makes Playa Norte an ideal place to relax in the sun and stroll along the Mediterranean Sea, while admiring the castle's historic majesty.
Dejan Braki★★★★★
We came here with our rented car (an hour drive) from Valencia, recommended by our hotel.
Beach is really beautiful, far better than Malvarossa in Valencia. Playa Norte is mostly free, but also have parts to rent sunbeds and umbrellas for a reasonable price. Numerous drinking and dining options just across the beach road. The hilltop picturesque old town of Peniscola adds to its beauty
TJ★★★★★
Beautiful beach with a great view of the castle. The beach tends to get busier later in the day. You can find many chairs and umbrellas to rent for a reasonable price. The sidewalk in front on the beach also offers plenty of cafes, bars and supermarkets
Helena Sunny★★★★★
A pretty beach in a pretty town. North Beach of Peniscola is long, clean, and beautiful. Located on the coast of Mediterranean, Peniscola is a fabulous historic town with a medieval castle. Great holiday destination. A few photos.
Djafarca Jeremy★☆☆☆☆
This is the dirtiest sea I've ever seen. The water is so contaminated. If you are planning to swim, it is the worst place ever.
Practical Tips for Enjoying Peñíscola’s Beaches
A little local knowledge goes a long way when planning your beach days in Peñíscola. The following tips will help you avoid common pitfalls, stay comfortable in the Mediterranean heat, and discover the best of the shoreline without unnecessary stress.
- Arrive early in July and August if you want a prime spot near the waterline, especially on weekends when Valencian families flock to the coast.
- Bring water shoes for the northern and southern coves, where pebbles and rocky entries can be tough on bare feet.
- Use the public foot showers before leaving the sand, but bring a small dry bag for valuables since lockers are not widely available.
- Check the wind forecast before planning a day at the northern beaches, as afternoon breezes can make umbrellas difficult to secure.
- Pack a reusable water bottle and refill it at beachfront fountains, especially during heatwaves when dehydration sets in faster than you expect.
- Visit the main urban beach after 6 p.m. for a quieter swim and a golden-hour view of the castle glowing above the water.
The real joy of Peñíscola’s beaches lies in their variety. One morning you might be snorkeling over seagrass meadows teeming with small fish, and by late afternoon you could be stretched out on fine sand with the castle walls rising dramatically behind you.
Wherever you choose to lay your towel, the combination of warm water, reliable sunshine, and that unmistakable silhouette of the old town on the headland makes every beach day here feel like a scene from a travel film. Pack your sunscreen, leave a little room in your schedule for spontaneity, and let the Mediterranean set the pace.
