15 Tourist Attractions in Menton

Nestled between the jagged foothills of the Maritime Alps and the shimmering Mediterranean Sea, Menton occupies a unique geographical pocket on the French Riviera. Unlike the glitzier neighbors of Monaco and Nice, this border town exudes a distinctly Italianate charm, a legacy of its historical ties to the Republic of Genoa. It is a place where pastel facades reflect in calm waters, and the scent of citrus groves drifts down from the hills, defining the atmosphere of the last stop before Italy.

The city’s microclimate is a point of pride and a practical benefit for visitors. Shielded from harsh northern winds by the mountains, Menton enjoys an unusually mild winter, often cited as the warmest on the Côte d’Azur. This meteorological blessing has not only shaped the local culture but has also turned the town into a year-round destination for travelers seeking sunshine when the rest of Europe is wrapped in coats.

For the culturally curious, Menton offers a narrative that is distinct from the resort towns surrounding it. It is a city of gardens, art, and gastronomy, where the focus shifts away from high-stakes casinos and toward the appreciation of landscape and heritage. The visual identity of the old town, with its baroque architecture and trompe-l’œil murals, provides a rich canvas for exploration that feels authentic and lived-in rather than manufactured for tourism.

Planning a visit here requires a shift in mindset. This is not a destination to be rushed; it is one to be savored slowly. From climbing the steep ramps of the medieval old town to wandering through the flat, elegant promenades, the town rewards those who explore on foot. The layout is compact enough to navigate easily, yet dense enough with hidden courtyards and viewpoints to fill several days of itinerary.

The culinary landscape is equally compelling, heavily influenced by its proximity to the Ligurian border. Dishes here often feature olive oil, basil, and fresh seafood, with the famous Menton lemon taking center stage in both sweet and savory preparations. This citrus heritage is so central to the identity of the town that it is celebrated annually with one of the most vibrant festivals on the French Riviera.

Whether you are a solo traveler seeking a quiet retreat, a couple looking for a romantic backdrop, or a family in search of a safe and engaging environment, Menton delivers a nuanced experience. To help you navigate the best this sun-drenched corner of France has to offer, we have curated a list of the essential sights and activities that define the "Pearl of France."

This hidden gem of the city is simply amazing. From the moment we arrived, we were captivated by the stunning array of plants throughout the garden. It’s beautifully layered, offering shaded spots to relax even on the hottest days. There’s even a refreshing water fountain to fill up your bottles. The prices are incredibly reasonable! We were even more impressed after learning about the garden’s rich history. A bonus is the short walk from the beach. Just be warned, we found it a bit too late! There’s also a free park nearby if you fancy a picnic 🧺 The friendly and English-speaking staff make the experience even better. For those who prefer not to walk, a nearby bus stop is available but you’ll need to check the schedule beforehand. Overall, it’s absolutely worth the visit!
Petar Vilotijevic★★★★☆
The villa is quite beautiful the gardens especially, the weather wasnt that scorching but its very hot inside the villa and during the walk, the only refreshments we could find were ofcourse overpriced. All in all its a nice experience but wouldn’t have done it if i would go back in time and would rather find something else to do.

A very beautiful botanical garden, informally arranged, easy to explore along marked and maintained paths. I love gardens and I saw some new plants, which makes me very happy, so I recommend it to others.

Great botanical garden to visit. We wandered around for a hour or 2. Lots to see and everything is kept nice and clean. Mosquitoes are a thing ( everywhere in this region!! ) but they offer free repellent at the reception.

A breathtaking Baroque church that is the true heart of Menton's old town. The beautiful façade is impressive, but the richly decorated interior is even more stunning, filled with remarkable artwork and peaceful atmosphere. Whether you're interested in history, architecture, or simply looking for a quiet place to reflect, this basilica is a must-visit. A truly beautiful and unforgettable landmark. ⛪✨
Marie P★★★★☆
The Basilique Saint-Michel Archange is one of the most breathtaking landmarks in Menton and a must-visit when exploring the old town. Perched high above the colorful streets, the basilica is known for its stunning Baroque architecture, beautiful interior, and incredible views overlooking the Mediterranean. The climb through the charming narrow streets is well worth it, and the peaceful atmosphere inside offers a wonderful contrast to the lively town below. Whether you appreciate history, architecture, or simply beautiful scenery, this historic church is one of the highlights of Menton.
David Tapper★★★★★
Situated high above the town, overlooking the bay the Basilique dominates its surroundings. It is a true place of worship and deserves to be treated as such. The feeling of sanctity envelopes you the moment you step over the threshold. There are no shops or commercial teasers to corrupt the purity of the building, letting it speak for itself as you gaze in awe at the wonderful art on the ceilings and in the individual chapels around the sides. The stations of the cross are perhaps the best I've seen, telling the story of Jesus' last days in sculptured figurines. It almost demands you sit and reflect on how you live and conduct yourself.
JJ. DSRY★★★★★
A magnificent historical gem in Menton! The interior of this Baroque basilica is profoundly beautiful, especially the ornate main altar .The detailed sculpture of St. Michael standing tall amidst the grand gilded columns and organ pipes is a sight to behold. It is a very peaceful place to step out of the sun, slow down, and appreciate the incredible craftsmanship. Don't skip this if you're exploring the historic center!
JULIDE★★★★★
I definitely think it’s a place that must be seen. You can capture incredibly beautiful photos here—they turn out amazing. It’s an experience you should absolutely have.

Visited Jardin Biovès during the Fête du Citron and it was absolutely stunning! The giant sculptures made entirely of lemons and oranges are incredibly detailed and creative. The colors, the citrus scent in the air, and the festive atmosphere make it such a unique experience. Very well organized and perfect for families or couples. If you’re in Menton in February, this is a must see! 🍋✨
David Stanley★★★★★
In 2026 a monumental statue depicting Gaia, the Greek goddess and nurturing mother of Earth, appeared in the annual Lemon Festival (Fête du Citron) in Biovès Gardens at Menton, France. Menton boosts the largest collection of citrus trees in Europe with over 100 varieties. Every year since 1934, a festival has taken place here around Mardi Gras with lemon and orange-studded floats and sculptures. "The Russian Falconer" or "Berkut Hunt" statue in Biovès Gardens was gifted by Tsar Alexander III. This year it rose next to a giraffe sculpture. A gigantic parrot constructed of lemons and oranges also emerged from the gardens.
Puneet DWIVEDI★★★★★
Jardins Biovès offers a picturesque walkway adorned in delightful Christmas decorations. The serene ambiance invites leisurely strolls, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the festive spirit. The addition of a toy train for children adds an extra touch of enchantment, making it a family-friendly destination. The well-maintained pathways and vibrant decor create a magical atmosphere, perfect for a relaxed outing amidst the holiday cheer. Jardins Biovès proves to be a delightful retreat, blending scenic beauty with festive joy for all ages to enjoy

One of the best Petit trains we have taken. Great 45m tour of the sea side, old town, mountain side and city. They provide head sets with a very informative audio in different languages.
Timothy Kincaid★★★★☆
We are spending a month in Menton, and did last May as well, so we are fairly acquainted with the area. The audio narrative that accompanied the ride was, however, insightful and revealed details behind sights we had seen. The information regarding Dr. Voronoff's place was amusing and interesting. We pass the City Hall all the time, but never realized what was inside. We had never traversed one of the narrow streets that the train passed through. All-in-all, it is something I would recommend. But, the audio set did not fit properly and I had to keep pressing it against my ears to hear it adequately.

A short beach and a lovely walk around the headland to the ancient breakwater, the fortifications and a stroll to end to look back at the monumental view of Menton - climbing up the hills behind the bay. Even in february it was warm and delightful with dramatic storm clouds over the mountais and the sun on our brows...
Kai Neo★★★☆☆
There are loads of restaurants along this beach. Be prepared to eat with the sun blazing in your face.
Montie★★★☆☆
In the afternoon the water gets really dirty...
Fabian Johnson★★★★★
This is a fantastic beach. The water is crystal clear, beautifully turquoise, and the visibility is incredible. It’s a pebble beach with fairly large, rounded stones, so I’d definitely recommend bringing water shoes. The water also gets deep very quickly, so it’s not ideal if you’re looking for a long, shallow entry. If you have young children, make sure they’re wearing appropriate flotation devices and are closely supervised. Even in summer, it wasn’t overcrowded, making it a great spot to relax and enjoy the sea. Please don’t come here, though—I was hoping to keep this little gem all to myself.
DS Han★★★★★
The beautiful scenery of the beach comes into view. There are many people enjoying swimming. It is a beach made of pebbles instead of fine sand.

My wife and I visited while staying in Menton and would absolutely visit again! The tour was informative and immersive while also offering incredible mountain views. They offer both French and English tour which was helpful as we don't speak French. They did a good job communicating the pickup location and transporting us to the start of the tour. Lunch was delicious and plentiful as well! I'd highly recommend to anyone staying in or visiting Menton.
Deli de Leon★★★☆☆
Let’s start with the good: the food was delicious and the farm itself was very pretty to look at and take pictures of. Being able to try a lemon directly from the tree was a highlight and the shop has a wide variety of tasting samples. Just be advised: if you do not speak French (even booking the bilingual tour), you will miss a lot of information as the tour is mostly in French with a reduced translation after. This means that there is a lot of waiting around during the tour. Waiting is also a big thing as the tour is short of 30 mins and between the tour and the lunch there is a lot of time of just seating and enjoying the views and (not included in the ticket price) drinks. This could be easily solved by doing smaller groups and keeping all of the English speakers on a separate group to make the tour more time efficient. The lunch tables were a bit cramped for our taste, especially seeing that they had 2 empty tables (one of which was in the shade which would have been nice to have during lunch). Although each person gets a dish, certain additions like bread, water or honey for the cheese are only one portion for a table of 8.
Mihail Georgiev★★★★★
Amazing and unique experience which can can only happen at La Ferme des Citrons. Lemon-, Mandarin-, Olive-, Avocado- trees welcomes you with a very nice and shades and after the tour which is lead by the amazing team of the farm you end up with the experience and flavours staying forever. Defenetely a "to do" thing when in Menton. Thanks again for everything!
Paul Barker★★★★★
We didn’t see any lemons, but it didn’t matter at all!! To be fair we did see some unripened ones, but we had missed the harvest by a few weeks, but don’t let that put you off. The experience is well worth your time and we thought was good value for money. We were collected at 10:50 and dropped back at about 16:00. The intervening five hours were educational, sociable and relaxing. The aperitif and lunch were lovely. The opportunity to mix and converse with other travellers was enjoyable and the views and tranquility of the environment worth the price alone. The team are welcoming and warm. I’m generally hard to please, yet I would whole heartedly recommend booking on to this tour!
A FR★★★★★
Great place to learn about lemons. The organisation is really good, punctual and well ran. The food and drinks were great.

We did not go inside. Outside is very nice building. Beautiful sea view. Panoramic view also on the old city of Menton.
David Stanley★★★★★
Le Bastion, a 17th century fortress on the waterfront at Menton, France, has been converted into a museum of art works by Jean Cocteau. Just prior to his death in 1963, Cocteau himself selected the drawings, tapestries, and mosaics to be shown there. Cocteau decorated a famous marriage hall in Menton City Hall in 1957 and two museums in the city are dedicated to his work.
Marc Fresko★★★☆☆
The Bastion is a small fortification built on the coast in the early 17th century. Its great age make it interesting, its smallness means there isn’t much to see. It houses a “museum” – more of a small collection, really – of works by the Jean Cocteau, the famous 20th century French artist (and poet, playwright, novelist, designer, film director, and critic). Most, though not all, of the Cocteau works are prints or drawings. At the time of this visit (2025), there is an exhibition of brightly-coloured sculptural multimedia pieces by Michèle Kleijnen. Curation was mostly in French only (there might have been a little English, but not much). I felt it was barely worth the handful of euros it cost to get admission. Being inside the beautifully-restored building is a bit of a treat. It’s fascinating to see how this atmospheric bit of history was built, seemingly out of re-purposed bits of other buildings. But there is not much to it: an entrance foyer, then stairs up to one large room which has three or four very small rooms off it. And also the pebble mosaics, inside and out which apparently were hand-made by Cocteau. One unexpected pleasure was the way that one of the narrow windows framed the rocks and sea outside – see photo. Oh, and the smallest museum shop in Christendom, possibly. I’m not one for Cocteau’s art, with the exception of a very few pieces. And I did not think much of the artistry of Kleijnen’s thingies. So this really was not a place for me, save for the architectural history angle. But much better if you appreciate Cocteau.
Lynn Strauss★★★★★
Of the many genres of his work, this museum was one of his own creations, including the stone frescos throughout and the pottery, paintings and drawings. Surprising and inspiring! Merveilleux!
Leona Li★★★★★
I recently visited the Jean Cocteau Museum and had a delightful experience. The museum is quite small—you can comfortably explore everything in about 30 minutes—but it’s filled with fascinating exhibits, and they change the artwork every two years. As an English speaker, I was touched by how the staff member made a sincere effort to communicate with me. He was exceptionally friendly and knowledgeable, sharing many insights about Jean and recommending other places to see Jean’s creations. The museum’s architecture and location are also stunning. Definitely worth a visit!

The Rampes Saint-Michel are one of Menton's most magical places. Climbing these elegant Baroque staircases feels like stepping back in time, with every turn revealing beautiful architecture and stunning views of the Mediterranean. The atmosphere is peaceful, timeless, and especially enchanting in the warm evening light. A must-visit for anyone who loves history, photography, and hidden gems on the French Riviera. Highly recommended!

A truly beautiful and picturesque place! I highly recommend walking up the ramps and taking your time to explore the area. The architecture is stunning, the atmosphere is charming, and there are amazing spots for photos. It's definitely one of the must-visit places in Menton. Don't miss it!

We visited Menton with a group. The Rampes Saint Michael were a must see attraction. I think it was worth it. The view was great and the colours straight out of a painting. Definitely worth a visit, but more a fly-by attraction than a proper visit!
Fiona B★★★★☆
Pleasantly surprised. I thought that I could skip over these steps and that they’d feel like a tourist trap. However, they were actually quite charming and had a “snapshot” POV of the ocean. The walk only takes a couple minutes — I suggest going after 7pm when the crowd is a bit more quiet!
Joseph Forrester★★★★★
Amazing views when you get to the top of the steps, Menton is truly an amazing place and gives you true visualisation of what south of France should be. Definitely going back one day.

Menton is such a lovely town. Sunny most of the year. Great restaurants, eateries and cafés. Picturesque beach, coastline and harbour. Well worth a visit or day out.

🍋One of the places that is definitely worth visiting in Menton is the famous sign Menton by the Sea. At first glance, it looks like a classic city sign for taking photos, but there are a few details that make it special. I especially liked the lemon motif incorporated into the letters. The lemon is the trademark of Menton, so it is nice to see how this symbol has been creatively incorporated into the design of the sign. It is precisely this detail that gives the sign its character and immediately reminds us of the city's famous connection with citrus fruits. The sign is located in a prime location overlooking the sea, the old town and the surrounding hills, making it ideal for taking photos. It also offers a very interesting view of the Rampes Saint-Michel, whose steps look particularly impressive from this perspective. Although it is a simple attraction, the sign is beautifully designed and perfectly represents the identity of the city. If you are in Menton, it is definitely worth stopping for a few minutes, enjoying the view and taking a photo as a souvenir.
Simone Unimi★★★★★
The "Menton" sign with the lemon is a truly unique spot, perfect for taking original photos and souvenirs of the city. In addition to the sign, the spot offers a beautiful view of the Basilica of Saint-Michel, with its characteristic staircase that completes the panorama. Recommended as a quick stop during a stroll in Menton: it combines a fun photo opportunity with a truly evocative panoramic view.

The town of Menton, Very pleasant and close to Italy. I love the tranquility, its sense of well-being and the brilliance of its sunshine, even if there's sometimes a bit of rain at this time of year. Very interesting guided visit ! However , it is rather difficult to know which garden is opened and when in Menton !
Helen Bradley★☆☆☆☆
The gardens are sadly not well maintained - lots of weeds, too few plants and several looking near death. The garden structures are in poor condition - tiles falling off, plaster falling off revealing the concrete beneath, wooden props holding some up. People using parts of the garden to park their cars! Such a shame Menton hasn’t sorted out complete ownership and found funding or sponsorship to properly restore the garden.

Awesome museum spanning from prehistory to more modern excavations for only 6 euros. The first floor has Paleolithic exhibits and even showcases hominid skulls including australopithecus, homo habilis, homo erectus, neaderthal, and homo sapiens from 25000 years ago. You can see the cranial progression to modern homo sapiens and it's absolutely fascinating. Then they have information and artifacts for humans and animals dating from 5000 BCE and up to Roman times. On the bottom floor, you can see Egyptian artifacts and newer findings from the surrounding Ocean. The reception was also very friendly and they had nice souvenirs. I bought the Venus figurine replica for 6 euros. Great prices and fun times

This is an interesting little museum that tries to tell the story of humans in this region fro 1.2 million years ago.It tops it off with some information about the sea grass that has been nourishing and protecting the Mediterranean for millennia but like everything in our world is suffering from pollution and degradation at he hands of mankind. In addition there is a large collection of artefacts brought up from the seabed. It is a bit wordy but for 3€ it is worth it.

A wonderful experience! Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable, engaging, and funny. We learned so many fascinating things, and the tour was both informative and enjoyable. On Saturday September 13 we toured Jardin Maria Serena with a most excellent guide. I apologize for forgetting his name. He was very informative, funny and engaging. You could tell he was a true plant lover. We enjoyed the stories he told about the plants, their origins, uses, and insect interactions. The gardens and views of Menton were terrific. We wish all guided tours were this good. Thank you!

I had a wonderful tour of the garden led by Christophe, who can guide you in both French and English! The visit was a special late evening session. I’m truly fascinated by his passion and the interesting stories he brought about this garden: from Menton history, to its patrons and the garden biodiversity that is being kept here through the years. You’ll learn a lot about plants from all around the world! We were lucky to be the first group to visit the place this summer. I hope it will be better known. The villa cannot be visited from the inside, but you can walk on its corridor and balcony that made its feature in Agatha Christie’s Poirot series, as “Villa Marguerite” of the episode The Mystery of the Blue train. I can’t wait to attend this tour again for a morning session. Thank you Christophe!

A beautiful beach in the town of Menton. Take a dip in the warm crystal clear waters with the old town in the background. When swimming out into the sea, you have a view of Italy on your left, Monaco on your right, and the old town of Menton in the back. Like most beaches in the area, it is rocky, so beach shoes are recommended. There is a yellow round kiosk with free lockers to store your valuables. There is also a free public bathroom in one of the archways, next to the stairs. There are a bunch of restaurants on the promenade but the ones we tried were ok, at best. Read the reviews first.

Amazing setting! Beautiful buildings, mountains, beach, & water! Very clean and not over crowded at least not in May of 2025 🙂 & it’s free! Lots of places to shop, drink, or eat nearby

This beach area is very nice. There are a lot of small shops to eat and amazing views of the water and mountains. This area is very built up with seemingly all new architecture on the boardwalk, by that I mean new benches and walk ways.

This place is amazing! A lot of great benches and seats to relax. You have a nice beach in front of you and some amazing architecture behind you!

Not much shade, managed to find a bush. Lovely water, very clear and no waves. Nice views of city. Beach has small rocks, not much sand.

Tips for Visiting Menton

To ensure your visit to Menton is as seamless as it is memorable, it helps to understand a few local nuances before you arrive. The town operates on a rhythm dictated by the Mediterranean sun and Italian trading hours, which can catch first-time visitors off guard if they are unprepared. Below are key insights to help you navigate the city like a seasoned local rather than a tourist.

Plan around the microclimate: While Menton is famously warm, the winter months can still bring crisp evenings. Pack layers, especially if you are visiting between November and March, to comfortably transition from sunny afternoon terraces to cooler nighttime strolls along the sea.

Respect the lunch closure: Many independent shops and some smaller museums close for a substantial lunch break between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM. Schedule your sit-down meals during this window and save your shopping or gallery visits for the late afternoon when the town reawakens.

Wear appropriate footwear: The old town is characterized by steep, narrow staircases and polished cobblestone alleys. High heels or flat-soled dress shoes can be treacherous; opt for sneakers or shoes with good grip to explore the upper reaches of the Vieille Ville safely.

Embrace the Italian influence: Don’t be surprised to hear Italian spoken frequently in the streets and markets. Many menus feature pasta dishes alongside French classics. Ordering an espresso at the bar, standing up, is often cheaper and more authentic than sitting at a terrace table.

Time your visit with the Lemon Festival: If you love vibrant cultural events, aim for late February or early March. The Fête du Citron is spectacular but draws massive crowds. If you prefer solitude and lower hotel rates, avoid these two weeks or book accommodations several months in advance.

Utilize the train for day trips: Menton’s train station is centrally located and offers a scenic, stress-free way to explore the coast. Driving and parking in the center can be notoriously difficult due to narrow streets and limited spaces; the train is often faster for reaching Monaco or Ventimiglia in Italy.

The true magic of Menton lies in its ability to slow you down. It is a destination that resists the frantic pace of modern sightseeing, inviting you instead to linger on a bench overlooking the harbor or to get lost in the labyrinth of ochre-colored streets. The absence of overwhelming crowds, particularly in the shoulder seasons of spring and autumn, allows for a connection with the town that feels personal and restorative.

As the sun sets and the facades glow golden against the darkening mountains, it becomes clear why so many artists and writers chose this town as their refuge. Menton is not merely a list of sights to be checked off; it is an atmosphere to be absorbed. By taking your time and venturing beyond the main promenade, you will discover a slice of the French Riviera that remains elegantly frozen in time, offering a serene farewell to France before the Italian border beckons just a few kilometers away.
