15 Things to Do in Honfleur

Nestled along the estuary where the Seine meets the English Channel, Honfleur remains one of Normandy’s most captivating coastal gems. Unlike the sprawling beaches of Deauville or the industrial ports of Le Havre, this town has preserved an intimate, almost cinematic character that has inspired painters for centuries. Whether you are arriving for a romantic weekend or a deep dive into French maritime history, the narrow cobblestone lanes and slate-fronted houses create an immediate sense of place.

The heartbeat of Honfleur is undeniably the Vieux Bassin, the old harbor that has remained largely unchanged since the 17th century. Here, the reflections of tall, tightly packed townhouses shimmer in the water while sailboats bob gently against stone quays. It is a place designed for slow travel, where the primary activity is simply sitting at a café terrace and watching the light change over the water.

Beyond the picturesque facades, Honfleur offers a surprising depth of cultural and culinary experiences. The town played a significant role in the development of Impressionism, serving as a gathering point for artists like Eugène Boudin and Claude Monet. Today, that artistic legacy lives on in the numerous galleries and museums tucked away from the main tourist thoroughfares.

Food lovers will find Honfleur to be a gateway to the rich gastronomy of the Pays d’Auge. The surrounding countryside provides a bounty of apples, cream, and cheese, while the harbor ensures a daily supply of fresh seafood. From bustling fish markets to Michelin-starred tables, the dining scene here rewards those willing to explore beyond the postcard views.

While the harbor is the main draw, the surrounding streets reveal layers of medieval fortifications, salt warehouses, and timber-framed architecture. Many visitors make the mistake of treating Honfleur as a quick photo stop, but those who linger discover hidden gardens, panoramic viewpoints, and quiet residential lanes that feel untouched by time.

To help you make the most of your visit, we have curated a list of essential experiences that capture the essence of this Norman treasure. From historic churches to scenic coastal walks, these attractions offer a balanced mix of sightseeing, relaxation, and local flavor.

A lovely way to spend an hour or so. It’s not massive inside. We went round the path a couple of times to make the most of it. Our four year old loved it. Rewards really looking around as there are also birds inside that perch in one spot and are easy to miss! Don’t miss the hatchery at the end with rows of chrysalis and emerging butterflies.
Forever Foodie★★★★☆
What a cute place to visit with small children! My toddler who just learned about butterflies at school was absolutely stoked to be here. It's not a super big place so 1 hour is enough to see everything but they do not specify a time limit and you can roam freely. It's a great idea for rainy weather but I recommend you wear layers that you can take off as it is quite hot and humid inside to create a suitable environment for the animals and plants. It was nice to be surrounded by butterflies and birds flying around 🙂

Loved it here. Great spot for children. Lots of birds and butterflies (and gift shop). Maybe a bit small, takes an hour or so to walk around if you take your time. My children loved it . About 10 euro per person
Mason Stoecker★★★★☆
A very cute Biosphere that we found mostly by walking around the small town. It contained signs in French and in English which made the exhibit more approachable. Very memerable moment actually was a small spider exhibit where they had them fighting different creatures and sometimes other spiders in a sort of kaiju performance
C M★★★★★
As a butterfly lover, I had to see it and was not disappointed. The enchanting creatures flutter by very close to you and you can admire them for as long as you like. The birds and plants are also quite wonderful. The sultriness inside is understandable, so better not dress too thickly.

Honfleur is a very pretty coastal town in Normandy. We very much enjoyed the food and atmosphere. Lovely 15th century church, gardens, harbour and pretty carousel. Very easy to get around on foot.

Le Vieux-Bassin in Honfleur is an absolute dream of a spot and easily one of the most picturesque locations you can visit in Normandy! If you love historic harbor views, colorful architecture, and scenic waterfront walks, this iconic landmark will completely steal your heart. Walking around the old harbor feels like stepping directly into a classic painting. The tall, narrow, timber-framed buildings lined up around the water are super unique and beautiful, especially with all the sailboats and yachts docked peacefully in the basin. We visited on a weekday, and it was wonderfully calm and uncrowded. It’s an open public harbor, so you don't need any tickets or reservations—you can just wander around at your own pace, take tons of gorgeous photos, and soak in the rich coastal history. There are also plenty of lovely outdoor cafes and restaurants lining the perimeter where you can sit down, grab a drink or a coffee, and just enjoy the scenery. Whether you spend an hour taking pictures or a full afternoon casually strolling around the cobblestone paths, Le Vieux-Bassin is a absolute must-see when traveling through northern France. Highly recommended!
Chris Draper★★★★★
A truly stunning place to visit and ideal for a long weekend stay. The town is full of charm, with its picturesque harbour, cobbled streets, and beautiful old buildings. There are so many lovely places to eat out, from cosy cafés to excellent restaurants, or you can simply sit by the water with a coffee and watch the boats and people go by.
Jacek Myrcha★★★★★
Very nice Town with local shop, cafes. Great place for a slow day .

Honfleur is a beautiful town and an absolute must-visit in this region. It has preserved its authentic charm, making it a truly special place to explore. Don’t hesitate to step away from the main shopping streets, you’ll find hidden gems and picturesque spots full of character. The atmosphere is both vibrant and peaceful, offering a perfect mix of escape and romance. We enjoyed a lovely breakfast at a café by the harbor, taking the time to admire the stunning buildings and soak in the charming ambiance. A truly delightful experience!

The Church of Saint Catherine in Honfleur is not just another historic monument – it feels like a story preserved in wood. At first glance it surprises you immediately: instead of stone and cold Gothic austerity, the entire church is built from timber, almost like an inverted ship hull. You instantly understand that this is a port town – the structure was created by local shipbuilders, and you can truly sense their craftsmanship. The wooden vaults resemble the ribs of a boat turned upside-down, giving the interior a warm, human scale that is both unusual and deeply atmospheric. Inside, the light is soft and calm. The aged wood absorbs sound, creating a peaceful silence very different from large cathedrals. There is a simplicity here, but also elegance – modest altars, maritime details, and a feeling of centuries of quiet life passing through the same space. Right across from the church stands its separate bell tower, which makes the place even more distinctive. Built apart from the main building to protect the wooden structure from fire, the tower almost looks like a small watchtower guarding the square. This unusual arrangement adds character to the site and reminds you again that Honfleur has always lived between sea, trade, and danger. Standing there, you don’t feel like a tourist in a monument, but rather a guest inside the history of Normandy itself. It is intimate, authentic and memorable – one of the most distinctive churches in France and absolutely worth visiting while in Honfleur.
Michael Mayer★★★★★
A must see in Honfleur. The largest wooden church in France dates from the 15th century. It was a marvel to walk around and experience its unique warm interior. We were lucky to hear the organ being played and its mellow tones enhanced the atmosphere further.
Tom Cronin★★★★★
Honfleur was a nice river cruise port with an unbelievably good bakery. Church was a nice visit.
Elizabeth Baker★★★★★
Beautiful church and one quite unique from what I have visited before as constructed from wood. However I have never seen so many candles in a church, so hopefully fire precautions are good considering it is made from wood! Very much worth visiting and no charge for doing so but donations appreciated.
Simon Drury★★★★★
Unique and all in wood. Built by boat builders rather than masons.

Absolutely wonderful park! 💖 Dogs are allowed too so it was such a treat for the pups. Well maintained and easy to navigate. I strongly recommend it! 💖
JJ Carlier★★★★★
Such a great place to rest indeed! Far from the madding crowd of Honfleur, you will enjoy tranquility and visit many celebrities you may not have expected such as Baudelaire or Erik Satie, all connected to the place. Spring is the best to stroll in the garden, colourful and astonishing. Take your camera 📷 the light is amazing! You access the garden on foot, the most enjoyable route is to walk along the beach to the estuary. You'll see the ships go by... the seashore and the horizon melting into one... 😯
Sachi Honjo Thornley★★★★★
Beautiful park! So many big trees as well as a cute pond. We found ducks, swans and frogs. Plus it has a bust of Monet near lily pads

Beautiful garden with very relaxing atmosphere. The pond has magnificent colours and is totally in Claude Monet style. We enjoyed this garden a lot.

This is a quaint little village port situated by the ocean. My friend tells me that his ancestors left from that church in town in the 15 or 1600s, and that it is the largest wooden church in France and very impressive. There is lots to see and do here and food is excellent. Quaint little restaurants and shops abound. We ate at a pizza restaurant just up the right side from the entrance to the church. Sorry I can't remember the name but it was good.
Ben Wood★★★★☆
Lovely town but suffering from over-tourism. Also, very expensive when eating around the marina. Beautiful sculpture. Having been there I would avoid restaurants near marina and go to restaurants further into the town. A bonus to see Kaleb Cooper from Clarkson's Farm visiting.
Rich Meska★★★★☆
EASY PORT TO ARRIVE/DEPART. Old town is about a 20-30 min. Walk on flat surface. Visit the historic centerand when you need a break, head east from the carousel 200yds to the park. Nice spot with restrooms.
Jason★★★★★
Lovely little harbour town but is extremely busy in peak season. I found parking expensive and most options involved parking lots so for a motorbike involved full price in a car bay. I couldn't see any bike spaces and those on streets were full. The streets in are busy and traffic slow and busy.

I always love this place. Some good restaurants some real tourist traps. Check how many people are speaking french. If its a lot it is generally a good sign

A beautiful bridge. Great viewing area on the Honfluer side of River Seine. Looks like most of the road sections were cast in situ and the centre road sections are pre cast. Each of the supporting sections have access doorways to the top and possibly into the hollow bridge road sections. The interesting thing I notice, that there doesn’t appear to be any expansion joints in the roadway sections.
Koen★★★★☆
South of Le Havre, the imposing Pont de Normandie spans the Seine estuary. Built between 1988 and 1995, the bridge was designed by French engineer and bridge specialist Michel Virlogeux. When it opened on January 20, 1995, it was the longest cable-stayed bridge in the world, measuring 2,141.25 meters long. The 856-meter span between the two 214.77-meter-high pylons also set an unmatched record at the time. Its 52-meter clearance allows large ocean-going vessels to pass over the bridge, giving drivers the impression of driving over a steep hill. Although it hasn't held a record since 1999/2004, the Pont de Normandie remains impressive!
Dean Rayner★★★★★
We had travelled over this bridge in both directions before it was pointed out by someone that this was a true engineering marvel and one of France's more famous bridges. It is quite a long transit and we have only done it is a bus - would love to drive it. Really well worth doing.
Ferdinand Mai★☆☆☆☆
Absolutely not recommended on a bike. Whoever decided to place the bike lane unprotected right next to speeding trucks must have never ridden a bike in their life. Brutal crosswinds, trucks blasting past your handlebars. Take the footpath instead. Bridge is nice to look at but wouldn't go across again.
Sharl Adabashi★★★★★
If you can, then take a boat ride under the bridge. The view is breathtaking

Fantastic time. This train is good value for money and worth every penny. Its stops for 10 min at the church and shows you areas of Honfleur you would not see.

Make sure you ask for the translation QR code when you buy your ticket - which you do on the train. Great way to see sights you won't on foot and to hear stories about Honfleur. Here's link: https://www.petit-train-honfleur.fr/ Honfleur audio guide

Be aware not bilingual, commentary is all in French, no headphones or other audio available. Having said that understood some of commentary and was already aware of history so some of it made sense but also missed alot. Would be useful to have link to commentary in other languages even via mobile phones to listen to. Enjoyed the trip especially trip to Notre Dame de Grace and views
Kathy Hancox★★★★☆
Good fun reasonably priced goes all around hornfleur. You stop for 10 minutes to look at the church and the view.

What a gem!!! We were there during the golden hour. The birds eye view over Honfluer & Normandie bridge definitely worth the stop. We were there during the golden hour to catch some pretty photos by the chaple and church.

Worth the hike up for the view over Honfleur and the Pont du Normandie. There are 2 ways up go via the North past the church and cross where it's less steep and come down towards the East where it's mega steep.

Very nice lookout point for Pont du Normandie, and a beautiful lookout on honfleur. The walk up is quite steep. The chapel on the hill is also very charming. It's very quiet up there, there weren't too many people when we went up. Very relaxing

A small garden, located between the historic streets. It was opened a few years ago, designed by local gardeners and artists. It is a beautifull and quiet spot, worth visiting. There is a small stream and interesting sculptures.

I was looking for this park as part of a Geocaching Adventure Lab. Finding the access was part of the adventure and then I was enthralled with the natural and man made features and sculptures. The water running through was magical. It looks like this has been here for centuries!

The garden didn’t have a lot to see, but it was still pleasant to walk around and take in the atmosphere. Peaceful even if not particularly impressive. A relaxing little stop if you're nearby.

A little tiny gem in Normandy. As a musician, this was a central and important spot to visit. Whether you appreciate the magical spice of Satie's music, or not, his music is an incredible testament of its time, of pushing of cultural and religious boundaries. We played the Satie driving up to Honfleur and away from it. It was a gorgeous soundtrack to our visit.
Belgian Geek★★☆☆☆
Sorry, I did not understood the exhibit. It was very strange experience based on the surrealism and the music. Maybe if I knew nothing about Satie or If I knew everything about Satie I would have enjoyed it more
Jeroen van Drongelen★★★★★
This museum is a very interesting and artistic mix between modern art, contemporary art, original historic pieces (like documents, letters and objects), music and only lastly: information. It is like walking through a scrapbook of the thoughts and works of the composer. Artists did a good job capturing the personality of the eccentric, maverick and influential artist Erik Satie in the museum's strange visuals, its off-beat presentation and historical facts and artifacts in a very unconventional way. The visitor is shown and told (partly using a clever audio guide system that activates when pointing at something) fragments of the lifetime of the composer while walking through a surreal set of chambers, each filled with all sorts of art, original pieces and of course: Satie's music. Some highlights are: a peculiar collection of umbrellas and unopened letters, a room with a host of original manuscripts and artifacts (presented on thin sticks in the middle of a room), a strange merry-go-round contraption that visitors need to physically activate themselves to "encircle the music") and a player piano that plays Satie's three Gnossienes in a minimalistic empty room. This having been a 'regular' museum would not have done the composer justice, and the artists who created this Maisons Satie museum did an excellent job. It would do the visitor a world of good though, to first look up some information on the life and works of Erik Satie to fully understand the atmosphere of this place, as 'explanation' does not seem to have been the main purpose.
Delmer Harris★★★★★
More of an experience than a museum, but definitely an interesting experience. Wear the receiver around your neck, plug in your earbuds, and stop moving whenever you hear music or words. Each room, sometimes multiple locations in the room, or even objects in the room will trigger a Satie commentary, an appropriate Satie musical clip, or both. It is by turns serious, whimsical, surreal, or macabre. I learned that Satie did waltzes, marches, and operas as well as the more familiar and contemplative pieces. Mostly, though, I was just entertained.
Julie Smith★★★★☆
Very different museum. The entrance door is very stiff and you need to push down very hard on the handle to get in , tbh we were at the point of giving up when someone opened the door from the inside. We booked a bus called Bee le harve which took us from Le Harve to Honfluer for 19 Euros return, an excellent service and so much cheaper than MSC cruise prices. Some of the automation was not working so we were offered a half price entry. Honfluer is the most beautiful town we have ever visited in France. Wonderful medieval building as is this museum. Many shops museums etc close for lunch 12-2 ish

Friendly personnel, great museums and walks. The musee Boudin et Satie are excellent, surprising and enriching. A visit to the Lieutenance is also a must- a very modern, interractive and surprising museum in the heart of Honfleur, where one can learn a lot about the history, the geography and the rich culture and civilisation of this special place. The personnel was particularly welcoming, allowing me to come back the next day to spend more time learning and taking in the lovely views from the terrace. The other smaller museums are also quaint, informative, and definitely worth a visit. The churches offer a wonderful insight into the various neighbourhoods of the town. And, of course, a stroll through the little streets with so much character + lots of delicious local specialities will surely charm every visitor. The chocolates, the biscuits, the calvados, the cider, the sea food, the cheese...take your pick! A shop with hand made 'sabots' was my personal favourite!! The 'personalities parc' leading to the beach was also a beautiful surprise. The views at sunset were particularly memorable. Last but not least, I thoroughly enjoyed the guided tour organized by the tourist office, with Baptiste, a young student who shared many interesting facts, annecdotes and secrets about the town's history, architecture, development and traditions. All in all, a wonderful and enriching visit and a delightful townley that fully deserves its great reputation.

The town is beautiful, full of historical charm and interesting. The crowds of tourists aren't any of those things. I guess that explains why the woman on staff at the tourism office who interacted with me was so SOUR!

Only had one brochure in English that took some digging to find. It's more of a gift shop. We had a hard time communicating in the area in general. A very touristy area that's not very tourist friendly. Brush up on your French or you will be lost in translations.

Beautiful place, full of history and unfortunately... tourists. A great example of "Art de vivre a la francaise" walking around this incredible, quaint and welcoming little town. So much to do on and off the water. However tourists pouring in by thousands in summertime is a real buzz killer. Ill be back in september!

We like Honfleur. We used the car park by the Riverside. I was somewhat shocked at the speed on the Seine at Honfleur, it was really shifting. The large River cruisers were moored close by as was the local fishing fleet. All in all it was quite a pleasant place to be.

There were 3 generations in our 6 strong family group. Grandma and Grandpa, Dad and Mum and 2 teenage grandsons aged 13 and 15. We were given the harder quests due to our ages. There were easier ones for younger children to follow. We all had lots of fun working out the answers which required using observational and numerical skills as well as memory skills. We thought it great value for money and an enjoyable way of spending the afternoon. We highly recommend Honfleur Labyrinth and would definitely visit again.
Chris Rees★★★★★
Amazing maze, best thing we did in Honfleur! This year was about King Arthur, it required completing two mazes with puzzles that had two levels of difficulty. We did the easier difficulty but was still challenging and a good sense of achievement. Our son 6 loved it as did we. There was also some games including kids archery for free and a more expensive escape room. The only watch out is the toilet, which as it is in a cornfield isn't great, so go beforehand. Brilliant fun for all the family, highly recommend.
Anna Glotova★★★★★
Great place for kids of all ages! Very well organized, a lot of interesting tasks, children do not just walk through the labyrinth, but must show attentiveness and detective skills😉🕵🏻‍♂️ There are also small cars for riding and an archery area. Very nice and helpful owner, let us in, despite the fact that we arrived too late. Thank you! Definitely recommend this place.

I had the most beautiful experience at Le Jardin Retrouvé, the love of my life asked me to marry him! Apparently, he had planned to do it somewhere else during our trip but when we walked around he decided this was the perfect setting, and it was! It was truly something special, I could not have asked for better scenery and ambiance!

Tips for Visiting Honfleur

Navigating Honfleur requires a bit of local knowledge to avoid the crowds and truly appreciate the rhythm of the town. The following tips are designed to help you maximize your time, save money, and experience the destination the way a savvy local might. Whether you are driving in from Paris or arriving by train, a little planning goes a long way in this compact but bustling port.

  1. Arrive early or stay overnight. Honfleur transforms dramatically once the day-trippers leave around 5 PM. Staying overnight allows you to experience the harbor illuminated at night and enjoy breakfast without the crowds.
  2. Park outside the historic center. The narrow streets are largely pedestrianized, and parking inside the old town is extremely limited. Use the large paid lots near the Naturospace or along the Bassin de l’Est and walk five minutes to the harbor.
  3. Wear sturdy, non-slip footwear. The cobblestones around the Vieux Bassin and the steep streets leading to the Côte de Grâce can be slippery, especially after rain. Leave the high heels and slick leather soles at home.
  4. Book restaurants in advance during summer. The best harbor-view terraces and traditional seafood restaurants fill up quickly, particularly on weekends and during the Russian Film Festival or Fête des Marins.
  5. Visit the market on Saturday morning. The Place Sainte-Catherine hosts a vibrant market where local producers sell Norman cheeses, ciders, and fresh oysters. It is the perfect spot to assemble a picnic for a walk along the beach.

Honfleur rewards travelers who allow themselves to get lost in its backstreets and embrace the slower pace of Norman life. The town is not a checklist of monuments but a living canvas where the quality of light, the scent of the sea, and the warmth of the locals create the true experience. Whether you spend an afternoon sketching by the Lieutenance or an evening savoring moules-frites, the memories you make here will linger long after you leave.

As you plan your journey through Normandy, consider pairing Honfleur with the rolling hills of the Pays d’Auge or the dramatic cliffs of Étretat. However, do not rush your time in this harbor town. The true luxury of Honfleur is found in the moments of stillness—a coffee on the quay, a conversation with a gallery owner, or the simple pleasure of watching the tide roll in beneath the old wooden church.
