Marseille has long been celebrated for its bouillabaisse, fresh seafood, and sun-drenched Mediterranean terraces. But beyond the fish markets of the Vieux-Port, a quiet culinary revolution has taken root. The city now boasts one of the most exciting plant-based dining scenes in the south of France.
Gone are the days when vegetarian travelers had to survive on side salads and baskets of bread. Today, chefs across the city are embracing local Provençal produce, transforming sun-ripened vegetables, legumes, and artisanal cheeses into memorable plates. From cozy neo-bistros to chic organic cafés, the options are surprisingly diverse.
This shift reflects a broader change in French dining culture. While tradition still matters, a new generation of Marseille restaurateurs is prioritizing sustainability and creative, vegetable-forward cooking. The result is a dynamic food landscape where eating meat-free feels like a discovery rather than a compromise.
Whether you are a strict vegetarian, a flexitarian, or simply someone who appreciates exceptional ingredients, Marseille delivers. The city’s multicultural energy adds another layer, with influences from North Africa, Italy, and Lebanon enriching the vegetarian repertoire. You will find everything from vibrant mezze platters to refined tasting menus.
Navigating this evolving scene can be overwhelming, especially if you only have a few days to explore. You want to know where the locals actually go for the best falafel, the creamiest burrata, or the most inventive vegan dessert. That is precisely why we have curated this list.
Below, you will find a selection of standout addresses that consistently impress with their quality, atmosphere, and commitment to meat-free dining. These restaurants prove that vegetarian cuisine in Marseille is not an afterthought—it is a destination in itself.

As a Danish family visiting Marseille, we had a fantastic experience at this restaurant. We hadn’t booked a table and the restaurant was fully booked, but the staff managed to find us a table within half an hour. It was well worth the wait. The food was outstanding, beautifully presented and full of flavour. The service was equally excellent – warm, friendly and welcoming throughout our visit. We would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Marseille.

One of the best vegan experiences I had. We had dinner here, which is more like shared plates and the super kind waitress recommended two per person, that turned out to be the perfect portion, even though it tasted to good that I wish I could have eaten more!
Deserves all the praise.

Very flavoursome vegan food offered in a cozy cafe/restaurant. Service was attentive and quick. Portions are very generous, I think I would’ve preferred slightly smaller portions at a small discount to have room for dessert!

We came for the brunch menu and had an amazing time! The food was incredible and the employees more than lovely! I can highly recommend it to anyone that appreciates vegan nourishing food! :))

After watching PPPíter's video on YouTube about them visiting this restaurant and acting as worst customers. Seeing how incredibly kind and patient the owners were, I have to give a all star review just for the sake of my small support from different country.
This will be also marked as my go to number one visit restaurant once I'd visit France some day. Greetings from Czechia! ❤️
Wish you wonderful day!!!

We visited Mariposas for dinner after reading the really good reviews. My partner is vegan, I am omnivore and we have visited restaurants with similar vegetable-forward concepts as Mariposa‘s before. That being said we were highly disappointed, if not shocked by the experience here. First and most important: The food was lacking both flavor and texture. We ordered a bell pepper filled with rice and lentils & tomato sauce, and a mix of mushroom and aubergine served with polenta and curry sauce. The rice and lentils were completely dry, the sauce lacked flavor and only tasted of salt. The aubergine was heavily undercooked, and the whole meal in composition was just a mushy mess. Again, also a lack of flavor here. In general these dishes were reminiscient of vegan options we were served back in 2015/2016, that also were just not that good. Especially considering the price (16/17€ for mains) this was neither a reasonable experience, nor a reasonable amount of food. Service was okay-ish, the server seemed to have no idea what was actually in the food and forgot our bread basket twice. The drinks were also served without any garnishes which added to the wholly underwhelming experience. In summary Mariposas completely missed the mark for us, and was more comparable to something (badly) home-cooked by someone who looked up a random vegan recipe.

I don’t have words to express how food was amazing, service and the girl and the boy that served us impeccable, We loved it and we were there every night of our trip, didn’t even bother to find another vegan restaurant!!! please stay as you are!
Felix Körber★★☆☆☆
Food lacked flavor, a concept and texture. I think I understand what the restaurant is aiming for, but they missed it by every measure. My eggplants were essentially raw and pieces were unreasonably large? Perhaps it was a really bad day, but even though the overall vibe is nice, I can't recommend Mariposas (sadly)

The food is excellent! The chocolate dessert was my favourite, it’s amazing how a vegan chocolate sweet can taste that good. ❤️

This restaurant was very underwhelming. Based on the reviews and what the food looked like we decided to come here. The food looked good but wasn’t. We ordered the avocado toast and nachos. The avocado toast was too sour from the avocado and the bread was way too brittle. The nachos were good, though not sufficient for a meal. It
was overpriced at €60 for 4 items. Would not recommend.
Wealthy Desai★★★☆☆
Food is average. Not the best value for money. Self service and very friendly staff. Chill atmosphere sit outside and enjoy the meal! We were a party of 4 and had 3 avocado toasts. The Bread was overcooked, dressing was too much and made everything on the plate soggy.
sho j★★★★☆
Quinoa salad was good. Platter with different cheeses was okay, guess too much cheese for me. The cucumber and mint drink was good
Gabriela Gudex★★★★☆
We got the Quinoa salad and it did not dissappomt at all! Light, fresh and delicious. They were very helpful about making sure it was gluten free/not contaminated so if you are coeliac or gluten intolerant I recommend coming here!

The grand hall is a bit weird and chaotic. But La Serre has a decent meal for decent price. I had the wraps (came with deep-fried sweet potato) that were good.

Fantastic lunch near the Vieux-Port! The food was fresh and absolutely delicious. The menu is small, but everything feels carefully thought out. The staff were incredibly friendly, attentive, and efficient, making us feel very welcome throughout the meal.
As a vegetarian with celiac disease, I was so happy to find a restaurant with staff who were knowledgeable about gluten-free food and made me feel completely at ease. The gluten-free dishes were absolutely delicious. They even served the best gluten-free bread I’ve ever had with the gazpacho—and it wasn’t even on the menu!
If you’re looking for a cozy restaurant with excellent vegetarian food near the Vieux-Port, I highly recommend Mauvaise Herbe!
Praful Kapadia★★★★★
The pasta dish was delicious. I spoke to the chef and I don't know how she put so much flavour in the tangy tomato sauce. The aubergine "balls" were unbelievable too. This may be the best pasta dish I've ever had!
Desserts very nice too! The staff are great!
Whether you're vegan or not, you'll love the food here 😁

LOVED everything, AMZING food, without exaggerating almost cried because it was so good. Super kind and attentive service, great vibes of the place, I sat outside. Forgot to take pictures of all of the food because it was so good. Had the three course meal lunch. Really delicious with amazing tastes and textures. Everything was so good, literally would say it compares to or is better than Michelin meals I’ve had. Thank you Mauvaise Herbe for a meal to remember!

Wonderful! Local, beautifully cooked food, served by friendly and attentive staff, in a relaxed and charming space. It's all vegan too, but non-vegans would be equally impressed by the menu. Nice wines too! Would absolute go back next time I'm in town.

Amazing finally a great fully vegetarian restaurant in Marseille! So happy to be able to eat such good quality fully vegetarian food and at such a fair price for all of the plates we ordered ! I really loved the ambience in the restaurant and the decor, felt authentically Italian - one of the chefs even came out to explain that some of the dishes were family recipes :))

It's really a hidden gems! Begging by the service which is warm and friendly follow by the ambience Wich makes you travel directly to Grece! You won't be disappointed.
The menu is rich and a lot variety for all tastes. I have a Greek delicious wine.
And the owner has come to say hello, also to have the feedback of clients Wich is really important for me.
5 stars 🤩 because I can't give 7.

Very authentic small shop with incredibly tasty Greek and Middle Eastern food. Found by chance, enjoyed every bit of it. As a hint of its quality: inside we found locals only. Loved it.
kyläpöllönen★★☆☆☆
Not authentic and not well made. Dakos salad was hard to eat because the bread peaces were hard and too big. Really mid overall. My friends greek salad had way too much feta, whole block. Looked mid anyways. Nothing looked authentic like the moussaka on the menu. As a vegan I would make same things at home cheaper and way more better. I don't understand why the reviews are so good.

This is one of the best vegetarian restaurants in Marseille. The owner and chef take interest in explaining and catering to specific needs. First meal in Marseille and it was a perfect way to start my two days here. Every single detail of the menu, the space, and the music is carefully thought out. The service is extremely friendly and it is clear locals from the neighborhood feel comfortable stopping in to chat with each other. I asked for recommendations and was not disappointed once:
- The ciabatta raclette was delicious (the pickles almost gave me the impression of a vegan grilled cheese Reuben sandwich).
- The pumpkin spice lamington was a nice mix of salty and sweet without being too much of either.
- The espresso surprised me the most with hints of coconut, vanilla and cookie crisp.
- To top it off the owner offered a wonderfully subtle Basque mint digestif.
An absolutely lovely experience and if I lived in Marseille I would definitely come here regularly. Merci beaucoup!

Perfect lunch! I went alone and the vibe was chill for a solo traveller. The food was fresh, delicious and well presented. The beer was also decent and everything was fairly priced. The dessert I had was especially delicious and the (English speaking) owner was very friendly. Would 100% recommend to anyone looking for great vegan/gluten free food.

I just found this little plant-based bistro in Marseille. The owners were super friendly and welcoming, and everything from the focaccia to the ricotta is made in-house. I can tell these guys are passionate about the food they serve and creating a great plant-based experience. They have only been open for a week, so they can use all the support they can get. The food was absolutely delicious, and I enjoyed it so much that I wish I had time to go back and order the entire menu! Definitely go try John Silver. You won't be disappointed.

Unfortunately found the main food quite disappointing. I love the idea behind the place, the staff were so friendly and welcoming and the venue is lovely with a gorgeous terrace but I’m afraid the food we got was very mediocre.
We ordered the meat mains - assiette zaza and kofta with aubergine (arrived cold). I will say the hummus was delicious. Perhaps the starters are a bit better.
I’m sorry to give it a 2 star but the food was not up to scratch for me. Lovely staff though!

A hidden gem, nice and tasty homemade food by Zaza, a lovely staff and the owner is genuinely a good person. I've recommended it to friends and they all loved it. There's a rooftop full of plants upstairs. Love, love this place. 💕💕💕
Tip: On weekends you must reserve, specially for larger groups

I’d found this place thanks to social media research prior to my trip to Marseille. I added it to my itinerary and visited as soon as I arrived in the city (after dropping off my luggage!). It’s walking distance from Saint Charles station.
The rooftop seating was lovely, especially as it was a beautiful day with blue skies. The staff were nice, in particular one guy who spoke English well and made conversation about Marseille and my experience so far etc.
Food wise, I already knew what I wanted after having stalked Moga’s instagram before my trip! It felt like wholesome home cooked food. It set me up well for the rest of the day.
J★★☆☆☆
We were excited to try Mediterranean food in Marseille and chose MOGA as the one place to try. Unfortunately it was a very disappointing lunch menu. We ordered the manoush zaatar, sfiha, caviar de aubergine/babaganoush, and the assorted plate with chicken and kafta.
First we cannot believe the menu for lunch is so different and unremarkable vs dinner. If you look at the photos in the reviews that look good, most likely it’s dinner not lunch.
Second, on the food we did order: the caviar de aubergine was the best (not pictured). The kafta and sfiha were both dry. Chicken, manoush, and other veggies were very ordinary.
Third, the service was so slow. We waited 50 minutes for our food.
The terrace was nice enough. Hope the food and service can match.

We had breakfast there, the staff were lovely and friendly.
I had a set which costs 8€, but just 2 slides of toast with butter/ jam, coffee and orange juice.
It’s quite overpriced, maybe they could be a bread more or lower price.
Overall the experience was good and easy for taking breaks while waiting trains.

A cute little place that is vegetarian vegan . A little too heavy in shabby chic. The food I ordered was wholesome and tasty and freshly made. Seems to be a very popular place, going by the crowds! A relief to eat a wholesome plate after a week of croissant, pain au chocolat and pizzas!

I had one morning to spend in Marseille while waiting for a train. I was looking for a café to sit at as i had some work to do. A friend of mine suggested me this place and it was just perfect!
Plenty of space to sit, fit your bags in a corner, chill atmosphere to work, nice food and drinks and friendly staff.

A disappointing brunch spot. The coffee wasn't good—genuinely unpleasant and bitter. On top of that, despite ordering a small latte, they brought me a large one.
The food looked thoroughly mediocre as well, and honestly, it didn't look appetizing enough to even bother ordering.

I loved this place! It is located just one block from the right side of the Vieux-Port de Marseille, close to the Hôtel de Ville and the magnificent InterContinental hotel. The service was fantastic and warm—just as people are in the south of France. The menu was excellent, offering a great variety of dishes from seafood and beef to fresh salads. All the ingredients are local, fresh, and cooked with love. Everything is delicious, from the starters to the mains and desserts. I also highly recommend trying the local Marseille beer, La Minotte—it's really good! It's a wonderful spot to enjoy a great meal, plus it's dog- and kid-friendly with a lovely view from the terrace.

Drinks are simple, refreshing and tasty. I highly recommend this establishment.

We went to Wood La Cantine Gourmande for lunch after seeing it recommended again and again online, so expectations were fairly high.
It’s easy to find but tucked away in a lovely little hidden square above the Vieux-Port, which immediately gives it a nice, relaxed feeling.
We ordered the smash burger, Caesar salad and a couple of syrups to drink.
The food took around 25–30 minutes to arrive, which felt particularly long as several people who arrived after us seemed to be served before us. But eventually, it came.
The smash burger looked enormous: two patties, generously layered and covered in sauce. I wasn’t entirely convinced when I first saw it.
And then I tasted it.
Astonishingly delicious.
The meat was cooked beautifully, the flavours worked, the sauce made sense once you actually ate it, and even the bun was special. Genuinely one of those burgers that completely surprises you. It also came with an enormous portion of very good fries.
The Caesar was another story. It was certainly generous, with huge pieces of Parmesan, plenty of chicken and bacon, but for me there was simply too much of everything and not enough lettuce. The dressing was also quite overpowering. Having eaten a beautifully light and balanced Caesar at Marius Bar a few days earlier, the contrast was particularly noticeable.
And perhaps that’s my wider observation about eating in Marseille in summer. It is HOT, yet so many restaurants seem determined to feed you as though you’re preparing for winter! Personally, I would have happily traded half those excellent fries for a simple green salad.
We ate everything, though, and the chef was lovely.
Would I return specifically for the Caesar? Probably not.
Would I return when craving that burger?
Absolutely.
When it works, Wood really works. That burger alone is worth knowing about.

Stumbled upon this little gem of a Moroccan restaurant while exploring Le Panier district of Marseille. The kitchen itself is small with dine-in customers seated in Place de Lorette on folding tables and chairs. The owner Amaar, was very friendly and suggested the vegetarian couscous dish for my wife who does not eat meat. As for me, I ordered the Sardines Tajine. The food came out fast, and the delicious. Both the vegetarian dish and the fish were perfectly spiced. The vegetarian dish came with a side of delicately spiced curry, and there was a side of bread for both of us. The food went down well with the glass of local Provençal red wine that we both ordered. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food, especially for the price paid. For two entrees and two glasses of wine, the tab was just €49. Highly recommended if you are looking for a good place to grab dinner in Le Panier.

Super nasty kitchen, unfriendly service… we waited over 1 hour for just a salad which was completely overpriced. Never seen such a chaos inside. Tables were not clean. Just very bad. We had a delicious vegetarian lunch - amazing veggie couscous and a beautiful giant salad! Lina the waitress was very sweet and speaks great English! Highly recommend!

1st, the owner was absolutely attentive. 2nd, the food was wonderful. We had a tajine (chicken) and a couscous with chicken. Both were excellent and authentic. The owner even provided a dish of caramelized onions and raisins to accompany the couscous, usually reserved for special occasions. Everything was clean and sparkled. The local white wine was a perfect accompaniment.

Very kind man, helped us late at night while being busy to still get a chance to try some vegan asian food! Soups were really great (i especially liked the thai one), good to know the pho is less of a soup and needs rice on the side. I would for sure recommend it as the price-quality ratio is amazing 😋

Must visit for vegans, it was a blessing to have so many options - especially in Marseille! Staff were welcoming and the atmosphere was chic. I'd strongly recommend the green curry if you like a mild spicy kick! The saigonais curry had a meaty kick. Both green and yellow curries were thick like soups so we came away nice and full. Very much enjoyed their house cocktail, also.

Food so good, we practically licked our plates clean. The wait staff were really nice and funny. My favorite was the noodle soup on the vegan menu followed by the yellow curry and spring rolls. For dessert, we had a biscoff tiramisu which was excellent and was demolished in no time. They had a lot of other interesting desserts too but we didn't have room in our tummies after a truly scrumptious meal.

Fantastic experience! The food is really really good. Vegetarians and vegans have tonnes of options here to choose from (there is an entire menu), including a selection of atleast 3 desserts. The owner is such fun to talk to- friendly and funny. Would recommend this over and over again

Chicken was good, but the rest left to be desired. The service was really attentive, but the food lacked any flavor or freshness to it. We really wanted to like it, but unfortunately it fell short in every way possible.

Really good authentic Syrian food

Located on a hill just a short distance from the old port, this restaurant offers good service and a selection of Syrian dishes. The portions are well-sized for appetites large and small. The Lebanese lager was also good. Prices were fair and reasonable.

Great service and great lentil soup to start with. But then the main dishes we ordered were disappointing. You could taste the canned tomato in the okra dish; the bread was shop-bought and not fresh, the meat in the freekah was dry and tasteless etc. Nice and helpful person who serves you; but the quality of the food is disappointing. Also it is expensive for what you get.

Super good and yummy. One of the best places to eat Mediterranean food. Very faithful to their cuisine. It felt a taste of home. A bit expensive for marseille but it’s worth it. I recommend it. And the staff were super nice and friendly.
Tips for Enjoying Vegetarian Dining in Marseille
Dining out meat-free in Marseille is a genuine pleasure, but a little local knowledge goes a long way. The city moves at its own pace, and understanding the rhythm of its restaurants will help you eat better. These practical tips will ensure you make the most of every meal, from timing your visit to ordering like a local.
1). Embrace the Provençal Market Culture
The true heart of vegetarian eating in Marseille lies in its markets. Before your evening meal, stroll through the Marché des Capucins in Noailles or the farmers’ market on Cours Julien. Seeing the produce—heirloom tomatoes, purple artichokes, fresh herbs—will deepen your appreciation for what lands on your plate. Many chefs shop at these same stalls daily.
2). Book Ahead, Especially on Weekends
Marseille’s best vegetarian spots are often small, intimate affairs with limited seating. The most popular addresses in neighborhoods like Le Panier or La Plaine fill up quickly, particularly on Friday and Saturday nights. A quick phone call or online reservation will save you from disappointment and a long, hungry walk.
3). Look Beyond the “Vegetarian” Label
Some of the finest meat-free meals in Marseille are found in traditional Provençal restaurants that simply excel at vegetable cookery. Look for dishes like tian de légumes, soupe au pistou, or panisse. Lebanese, Moroccan, and Italian eateries also offer outstanding vegetarian plates, often at a lower price point than dedicated vegan cafés.
4). Learn a Few French Phrases
While many servers in tourist areas speak English, a little French goes a long way. Knowing how to say “Je suis végétarien(ne)” (I am vegetarian) or “Est-ce qu’il y a de la viande ou du poisson dans ce plat?” (Is there meat or fish in this dish?) shows respect and ensures clarity. Be aware that in traditional French cooking, animal-based stocks are sometimes used, so it is worth asking.
5). Adjust to French Meal Times
Marseille follows the southern European rhythm. Lunch is typically served from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, and dinner rarely starts before 7:30 PM. Arriving at 6:00 PM for dinner will likely leave you staring at a closed door. Plan your day around these windows, and consider a late-afternoon snack to tide you over.
6). Carry Cash for Smaller Cafés
While credit cards are widely accepted, a few of the smaller, family-run vegetarian and organic cafés in Marseille still prefer cash or have a minimum spend for card payments. Keeping a €20 note in your pocket will make your experience smoother, especially at juice bars or tiny lunch counters.
Marseille’s vegetarian scene is a reflection of the city itself: warm, diverse, and unpretentious. The best meals here are not rushed affairs but leisurely moments spent savoring the region’s bounty. Whether you are sitting on a sunlit terrace with a glass of rosé or tucked into a cozy corner of a bustling bistro, you will find that eating meat-free feels entirely natural.
As you explore the city’s winding streets and vibrant neighborhoods, let your appetite guide you. Each restaurant on this list offers something unique, but they all share a common thread—a deep respect for ingredients and a passion for hospitality. Bon appétit.
