If you think Toulouse is only about cassoulet, duck confit, and the violet-scented air of the “Ville Rose,” think again. Beneath its sun-baked terracotta facades and alongside the flowing Garonne, the city harbors a deeply carnivorous soul. Toulouse has quietly become a premier destination for meat lovers, blending the rustic traditions of the Occitanie region with the polished technique of modern French gastronomy.
The local dining scene is heavily influenced by the nearby Aubrac and Gascony regions, meaning the beef is often exceptional, mature, and full of flavor. From the bustling student-filled streets around Capitole to the quieter, leafy boulevards of Saint-Cyprien, the scent of searing butter and open-flame grills is never far away. Whether you are closing a business deal or celebrating a special occasion, the city offers a cut of meat for every mood and budget.
Navigating the sheer variety of options can be overwhelming, especially when you are looking for that perfect balance of crusty char, melting fat, and precise temperature. While the city is famous for its traditional brasseries, a new wave of chefs is pushing the boundaries with dry-aging rooms and Argentine-inspired fire pits. It is a landscape where a humble entrecôte can be elevated to an art form.
Understanding the local terminology is key to maximizing your experience. In Toulouse, you will often see cuts like bavette, onglet, and côte de bœuf on the menu, each offering a distinct texture and intensity. The best establishments treat these cuts with reverence, often sourcing from specific farms and aging the meat in-house to develop a deep, nutty complexity.
This guide is not a random list; it is a curated journey through the city’s most impressive meat temples. We have evaluated these establishments based on the provenance of their beef, the skill of their grill masters, the quality of their wine lists, and the overall atmosphere. Whether you prefer a classic Béarnaise sauce or a simple sprinkle of fleur de sel, you will find your match here.
Without further ado, here are the tables you need to book for the ultimate steak experience in Toulouse.

I was simply looking for a good steak close to my hotel. But walking into a steakhouse is always a gamble, regardless of the city or country. A previous review caught my attention, so I decided to give this place a try – and I did not regret it for a second.
I ordered the entrecôte with peppercorn sauce and sweet potato fries. The steak was excellent: tender, succulent and as soft as butter. And the flavour? Exactly what a great steak should taste like. Rich, perfectly cooked and full of character.
The sweet potato fries were equally impressive – crisp on the outside, fluffy on the inside, with the natural sweetness that so many places aim for but rarely achieve.
As for the peppercorn sauce, it was spot on. Rich, balanced and packed with flavour without overpowering the meat.
To top it all off, the service was warm, friendly and genuinely welcoming.
A thoroughly enjoyable meal. If you are in Toulouse and in the mood for a proper steak, this place is well worth a visit.

The food was good - staff was friendly aswell, only thing I would improve is to have an English menu available as for me I used google translate it was not a problem but for maybe older people it will be difficult. Will visit again if in the area .

The food is ok, hits and misses. Steak was good while magret canard was not the best. Obviously not the best meat I've had but still decent for the price. Great ambience, not too noisy. Service wise.. seemed to have only one server working and he was kind and liked how he told us beforehand which items were not available. However as the restaurant filled up (70% full) the service got really slow and we even had to wait an hour to order dessert.

We visited tonight with our five kids and had a lovely meal. The quality of food, presentation and service was spot on.
Zeeshan FAROOQ★☆☆☆☆
Food was not good at all. We ordered chicken steak with mushroom sauce that was not fully cooked and was very soft. We asked to cook it properly but they did not pay attention and it was not hot enough neither. Their beaf burger was not tasteful.
Service was very slow and they were excusing us all the time.
We asked to pack the leftover but they forgot and wasted it. Never going back here again.
Interior atmosphere was good. But no use when food is not as expected. Really disappointed.

For me, this is easily the best restaurant in Toulouse. I’ve been here several times, and every visit has been outstanding. The quality is consistently excellent, which is one of the main reasons I keep coming back.
The restaurant serves halal meat, and the quality is exceptional. The steaks and other meat dishes are always juicy, flavorful, perfectly cooked, and prepared with great care. Their drinks are excellent as well—the cocktails I’ve had have all been fantastic and are the perfect complement to the meal.
The service is equally impressive—friendly, professional, attentive, and efficient. The staff make you feel genuinely welcome, and the food arrives quickly without compromising on quality. The restaurant itself has a warm, cozy atmosphere that makes every visit enjoyable.
The prices are also very fair considering the outstanding quality of the food, service, and overall experience, making it excellent value for money.
Although it’s a little outside the city center, it’s absolutely worth making the trip. If you’re looking for exceptional food, outstanding service, and a fantastic dining experience, I can’t recommend this place enough. In my opinion, it’s easily the best restaurant in and around Toulouse.

This was my second time here. The staff is so friendly!! If you like meat, I suggest that you come to this restaurant. I ordered ribeye as Rare and it was cooked to perfection. Finally they give you. Tiramisu shot (it's like Heaven in a cup). I also forgot my jacket, and when I went back they placed it in a safe place. Highly recommend 😊😊

Best steak and gratin potato’s I’ve had in France! The Foie Gras on top of the steak was a first for me, and was a complete game changer. The staff is super nice and accommodating also!

Was recommended to eat here by the pub next door, Melting Pot(?). A great recommendation, the steaks and duck were exceptional, and the dauphinois potatoes were the best we’ve eaten anywhere. The prices are extremely reasonable, with fast service.
We were in town for a rugby match and ended up eating here 3 nights in a row! Highly recommended!

Food looked and sounded good but was very bland in flavour and taste. The waiter mixed our orders up so I had a well-done burger and my friend had my blue burger. He ended up vommiting after he noticed the blood oozing on his plate.
The waiter didn’t even ask how our food was.
I would not recommend this restaurant.

I wanted to come here for a long time and it did not disappoint l! Everything was very good starting from the starter and ending by the main course. I ordered the sirloin steak as rare and wow - bang on. The butter sauce was also beautiful 🤩
Thuy Vuong★★★★★
The queue was very long but the restaurant is big enough so we got it for a table of two in just about 15 mins. The steak was well cooked, not too good in comparison to other steakhouses however the sauce is the highlight. Very fragrant and herbly sauce, made just thick enough and accompanied the steak and fries so well.
Atmosphere was chill and nice, quite a vibe for a dinner.

The steak was delicious, the fries were fantastic, our waiter was friendly and attentive, and the air conditioning made the restaurant really comfortable on such a hot day. Great food, great service, and a brilliant dining experience.

Amazing food and seamless system! The concept here is straightforward and brilliant. The steak is cooked perfectly, the secret green sauce is absolutely delicious, and the fries are crispy and endless. I love how they keep half of your portion warm and serve it to you fresh as a second plate. Excellent value for money. A must-visit in Toulouse!
Rob T★★★★★
Heard a lot about this place, and finally decided to pay it a visit. Wow was very pleasantly surprised! No menu, as soon as I sat down, asked how I like my steak done.
5 mins later, salad arrived with bread. A nice light dressing on the salad. Then once I finished that, the main event, their steak and fries, with the famous sauce. Everything I hoped it would be! The waiting staff came round asking if I wanted additional fries which was very generous, but I politely declined.
For the price I paid, was a bargain considering the quality of the food and where I was. No wonder there was a big queue to get in. On that note, I arrived outside at 18:50, 10mins before opening. Despite the big queue, once doors opened, there was no wait for a table and was seated immediately.
Will definitely come back here. Friendly staff too.

During our trip to Toulouse, France, my wife discovered Les Cabochards online, and it turned out to be an incredible find! This is hands down the best spot for steak, Toulouse sausage, and, surprisingly, some of the most delicious chicken we’ve ever had. I’m still not sure how they made the chicken so flavorful, but it was unforgettable.
We didn’t have a reservation, but the friendly staff welcomed us warmly and found us a table. The food was exceptional. I have to highlight the fries—crispy, perfectly seasoned, and absolutely addictive. In fact, the food was so amazing that we returned the very next day to have the same dishes again!
Les Cabochards is a must-visit if you’re in Toulouse. The food, hospitality, and reasonable prices make it a standout dining experience. Thank you to the team for making our visit so memorable. Highly recommend!

I was at Barbaque every time I visited Toulouse. It was like a routine. The atmosphere is nice. The food is high class. But the last time I was there with my colleagues, I was truly disappointed.
I ordered the Galice dry aged 1.6kg for two of us. What came, was truly less than what we paid. Even if I remove the weight of the bone, which should be around 300g, and remove the loss of water ~100g (which is not much when you have dry aged meat), we should have had at least 500g of meat each of us. But this was clearly not the case.
The sides were this time also really small. I mean, if you pay a high price and get less than you paid, the price/kg is getting much higher.
I am disappointed and will not come back. I felt I was at the "Arnaque" and not at the Barbaque.

Everything was sooo delicious! Highly recommended place, perfect for a lunch/dinner.
We didnt reserve table in advance, but we were lucky to had a table for 6 at noon. You should book because it was crowded, what I can understand totally. Wine selection is also amazing.
Hope we can go have a lunch there again once 🙂
Thank you.

My husband and I shared our meat. First time! He eats his meat rare, and I, very very well done! Even if we didn’t eat at the same time, everything tasted great! The only negative point was the smell of the room. Humidity of the cellar?

Impressive Wine list.
Duck nems are a delish starter. Argentine Beef is very tender, well cooked and comes with fries but not salad. Magret had too many veins so go for the beef. Pain perdu is good if you can manage dessert. Friendly staff.

A beautifully decorated restaurant where the dishes are generous, high-quality, and the promise to customers is kept.
If you're looking for a haven for those who enjoy good food, this is it!
The dishes are a bit pricey, but the quality-quantity-price ratio is excellent.
We came for a birthday celebration and received a very warm welcome.
The decor is very stylish, and the wine cellar is a real showstopper in the downstairs room! For those craving good meat and hearty meals, we'll definitely be back!

This restaurant is definitely in my top 3 of the best restaurants I've been to in and around Toulouse. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal! 👍🏻 High-quality ingredients, more than generous portions, and top-notch service. 👌🏻 Honestly, don't hesitate, just go! You won't regret it for a second. I'll definitely be back. Thank you!
Darling J★★★★☆
Excellent service! The portions were very generous and good value for money. Now, to be perfectly honest, it lacked seasoning, hence the salt concept, I think. But sometimes it also lacked sauce. For example, the truffle mashed potatoes had an overpowering truffle flavor with nothing else and were more like dry mashed potatoes. The fries, on the other hand, were INCREDIBLE (maybe some of the best). The carpaccio lacked seasoning but worked well with the sun-dried tomatoes. I really wasn't a fan of the beef tartare; it was too sweet. But the duck breast was excellent. So, a mixed review for the food, which was excellent to average, but the desserts were a real highlight for me. They were all very well made and homemade, you can tell. The chocolate mousse was to die for! I will definitely be back.

We had a wonderful time as a family celebrating my partner's birthday. The restaurant offers excellent meats, and we thoroughly enjoyed our meals.
My children each chose half a chicken: it was cooked perfectly, the meat tender, flavorful, and truly high quality.
The duck breast and beef were also very good.
The atmosphere is pleasant, the service attentive, and we appreciated this convivial break over a delicious family lunch. We highly recommend this restaurant!

A nice place for everyone, I saw couples, friends, families streaming and the house was full of warmth and homely feeling. The crew made everyone feel welcome and do regularly check-in on me as I consume my dinner.
The salad starter was great, with soft, slightly heated goat cheese in the shape of a little disc, with drizzles of honey, giving it a nice complement to the overall taste.
My main was a grilled sea bream with mint sauce. With a dash of lemon, it gave that zesty feeling over the burnt skin of the fish. And oh yes, it was an entire fish, not just a fillet.
I was disappointed though with this fish, for two reasons:
- it still had gills on, it wasn't completely gutted prior to cooking
- the freshness of the flesh was below my personal expectations.
Gills.
I wasn't sure if it was a french way of cooking fish, so I consulted with the manager. Apparently, the gutting was left to the fishmonger, and the chef expects everything to be already done. His job is just to cook it.
Thus it seems that there was no prior check nor quality control. I would recommend that the restaurant does a check, and not to assume that their fish supplier does the job for them correctly. And if indeed the supplier fails, the kitchen should do due diligence in removing the gills and other innards around the head. After all, these elements are the ones giving the foulest odours for any fish cooked.
Freshness.
Well, I can agree that this is a very subjective feeling, and the level of what one considers as fresh can vary from one person to another.
For me, I am very particular about freshness, and one can tell from the structure and texture of the flesh as you bite into it and feel it in the mouth. For me, it felt mushed and grainy. It wasn't fresh enough to my standards, but perhaps my standards may be high.
noel borg★★★★☆
Food was good not great, the French fries where not crispy but soggy. The starters where free since we ordered the main course, and the portions where generous. The bread we where offered was not fresh.

Their grill meat is good. The price is very reasonable, too. I ordered the duck gizzards. It is very tender. The 4 meat mix are very good too. It is a simple grill with salt. They done well. Staff are efficient and friendly.
Tips: do not wear shorts or a skirt if taking the outdoor seats as the chairs have holes as pattern but there is no mat on the seat. So, it is not that comfortable after a while.

Everything was excellent! The marinated skewer was melt-in-your-mouth tender, served with a baked potato, Provençal tomato, and salad (I didn't have time to take a picture, but the empty plate is a good sign 😋). The chocolate fondant was also fantastic, not to mention the incredibly friendly owner 😊

A fantastic, friendly, and welcoming restaurant. The food is excellent, and the staff are smiling, welcoming, and very kind.
We've been several times, and each visit is a delightful surprise. The menu is varied, the ingredients are high-quality, and the dishes are always delicious.
I highly recommend it!

Excellent halal burgers and roasted chicken. Fries were handmade and tasted fabulous. We had the caramelised burger and roasted chicken. Total for a family of 5 was €67 which was very reasonable

What can I say about Grelha? Literally, he’s just amazing!!
The burger bun is homemade, fluffy with a neutral flavor that won’t compete with other flavors.
Their homemade sauces and fries are incredible.
I ordered a grelha burger ,the chicken is tasty and crunchy the other ingredients are so delicious too. Their prices are affordable for that amazing quality of food
Highly recommend!

The food here is incredible. Celebrated my boyfriend's birthday here. The manager was immensely welcoming and catered to all our needs. I had the black burger for the first time and it was mouth-watering. Will be going back soon👌🏾

Best grilled chicken (half a chicken + rice + soda) and for a good price on top of that. For now I was taking just takeaways, should try eating as the atmosphere looks great. Recommend this place to try out their chicken, can't say for the other choices on the menu like burgers.

Went with some friends sat at the foosball table (I think it’s called babyfoot in French) the food was so good that we forgot to take pictures, we tried some of the desserts on the new summer menu and they were awesome!

Just don't arrive at 17h30, they were very unfriendly to us and the mayonnaise and salad was not fresh at all. The salad was also dry, just salad without dressing or other vegetables. Very sad that this restaurant gets such good reviews and ruined one of our diners at our city trip in Toulouse.

Very nice restaurant with nice personnel. Unfortunately sometimes portion sizes are very small (our 8 year old daughter ordered a grown up Tartiflette last time, and it was so small she was still hungry and ate fries afterwards… that’s definitely not enough Tartiflette!)

I am so disappointed and so sorry to leave that review.
The reviews were good, the menu looked perfect.
In reality we waited more than an hour when the restaurant was almost empty. There was 1 waiter (who was nice)and 1 woman (who was doing nothing). The ribs were not good.
And the whole restaurant was so dirty. Toilet disgusting, and the floor was so slippery and sticky at the same time. Not even talking about the smell.
The fried were good, the chicken was very dry.
So much potential wasted.
Advices: Clean the floor properly and the toilet. They need to be spotless!
Work on the kitchen cause it is way too long.
Don’t let someone do nothing when people are waiting for 1 hour (better to seat at a table doing the account or something).
The waiter was nice, keep him.

Tips for Ordering Steak in Toulouse
While finding a great restaurant is half the battle, knowing how to order your steak will significantly elevate your dining experience. French culinary culture has its own specific vocabulary and preferences that differ slightly from American or British steakhouses. Understanding these nuances will ensure you receive exactly the plate you are dreaming of, cooked to your precise liking and paired perfectly with the local wine.
Understand the “Cuisson” Scale: In France, the doneness scale is slightly shifted. If you like your steak rare, order bleu (cold center) or saignant (warm, very red center). If you prefer medium-rare, ask for à point, which in France is often closer to a true medium. Ordering bien cuit (well done) is generally frowned upon in high-end establishments as it is believed to ruin the texture of quality beef.
Look for “Maturation”: The best steakhouses in Toulouse will proudly display the origin of their beef and the duration of its aging (maturation). Look for meats that have been aged for at least 30 days. This process concentrates the flavor and tenderizes the fibers, resulting in a nuttier, richer taste that cannot be achieved with fresh meat.
Trust the House Sauces: While you might be tempted to just ask for ketchup, resist the urge. Toulouse steakhouses excel in rich, reduction-based sauces. The classic Sauce au Poivre (peppercorn) and Sauce Roquefort are staples, but many modern spots offer a Beurre Maître d’Hôtel or a reduced jus that perfectly complements the char from the grill.
Embrace the “Côte de Bœuf” for Two: If you are dining with a companion, skip individual steaks and order a Côte de Bœuf. This massive, bone-in rib steak is usually aged and designed for sharing. It is often sliced tableside and served with a generous portion of pommes frites or a gratin. It represents the best value and the highest expression of the chef’s grilling ability.
Pair with the Local Southwest Wine: While Bordeaux is close, the Southwest region offers incredible wines that cut through the richness of beef. Look for a structured Cahors (Malbec) or a robust Madiran (Tannat) from just down the road. These wines have the tannic grip and dark fruit notes necessary to stand up to a heavily charred, fatty cut of meat.
Stepping into a great steakhouse in Toulouse is about more than just eating; it is a cultural immersion into the French art of living. The pace is slower, the appreciation for the produce is profound, and the atmosphere encourages you to linger over your wine long after the plates are cleared.
Whether you found a cozy corner in a historic cellar or a modern table overlooking the Garonne, the memory of a perfectly cooked piece of beef in this city is a lasting one. So, loosen your belt, order a glass of Madiran, and let the grill masters of the Pink City show you how it is done.
