Finding a great steak in Dijon means stepping into a city where Burgundian tradition meets modern French bistro culture. While the region is world-famous for Boeuf Bourguignon and Charolais cattle, the capital of Burgundy also boasts a vibrant scene dedicated to perfectly seared cuts of beef. From historic cellars to contemporary brasseries, the city offers a surprising depth of choice for carnivores.
The local dining culture heavily influences how steak is prepared and served. In France, the default doneness tends to lean toward rare or medium-rare, often described as "bleu," "saignant," or "à point." If you prefer your meat cooked longer, it is always wise to specify "bien cuit" to the server, though many chefs recommend embracing the local preference for maximum tenderness and flavor.
Quality is deeply rooted in the surrounding terroir. The lush pastures of the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region are home to the iconic Charolais breed, prized for its lean yet marbled texture and deep beefy flavor. Many of the top tables in Dijon proudly source their meat from local farms, ensuring that the journey from pasture to plate is short and sustainable.
The atmosphere in Dijon’s steakhouses ranges from rustic and cozy to sleek and contemporary. Whether you are looking for a romantic dinner in a vaulted medieval cellar or a lively lunch with local business people, there is a venue to match your mood. The common thread is a dedication to French culinary technique, often featuring sauces like béarnaise, pepper, or the famous Époisses cheese sauce.
Navigating the menu can be a delight for meat lovers. Beyond the classic entrecôte or filet, you may find regional specialties such as Charolais tartare or slow-braised cuts. Side dishes usually include the ubiquitous but delicious "frites maison" (homemade fries) or a gratin dauphinois, making for a hearty and satisfying meal.
To help you narrow down the options, we have curated a list of the best destinations in the city for a premium beef experience. These selections have been chosen for their consistency, quality of meat, and authentic atmosphere.

We had a lovely lunch at le Sauvage with "Clint Eastwood". The pate and terrine to start then the steak tartar and brochette of beef with chips and a great sauce epoisses then a fromage blanc sure and a really spectacular crepe suzette. Well served quality local ingredients and fast friendly service. We were recommended to go by a local and suggest you search them out in Dijon hidden away in a little courtyard.

The good stuff: atmosphere is very cozy and the service is amazing! The people are fast, superkind and have a smile on their face, we really appreciated that.
The good food: escargots are absolutely amazing, and the gratin potatoes were smashing!
The less good food: kidneys were very dry and the bone marrow was extremely limited; only managed to get 3 thee spoon scoops out of 1 half and the taste was limited! I don’t feel the price/quality/portion size ratio was good unfortunately…

Very cozy spot. We chose to eat inside as we had enough of the Parisian summer 24 heatwave. Our cute waitress was warm and attentive. Very extensive wine list from the region. The escargot was delicious, and our mains were expertly prepared. Good bang for the buck.
Justin Miller★★★★★
Delicious meal, friendly staff, and good ambiance. I had the bone marrow, boeuf bourguignon, and crepe Suzette flambée. The total price for a meal for two was 109€ including cocktails and a bottle of wine.
Matthew Earl Styers★★★★★
What a lovely little spot. Don't let the name fool you, the folks here are friendly and engaging and even tolerated my english (and my world-class comedy) in this typically cozy, old-fashioned french restaurant. The open kitchen really gives you an impression on what comes next and makes the whole space smell amazing from the moment you walk in. The steak was wonderfully done and the service top notch. Price was very doable too which made this a perfect fit for our short stay in Dijon. A special thanks to Manuel who served us and the bubbly young french lady who's name I didn't catch. Thanks a lot!
If you are looking for an intimate spot to unwind with true Burgundian food and wine and without having to fight with google translator to *MAYBE* get what you want, definitely stop by Grill Le Sauvage and ask for Manuel! Tell him Richard sent you!

A great place for eating dinner later at night (all the surrounding places were closing early on Saturday evening). We had the beef skewer and the entrecote for the mains. Instead of medium, the entrecote was medium rare, but delicious nonetheless.
Sadly, the sugar on the creme brulee wasn't completely melted.
In the end we had a great time with delicious wine and friendly staff.

We couldn’t have chosen a better place for our very first French meal in France than Le Restaurant Gril’Laure in Dijon. The long line of locals waiting outside was already a clear sign of how beloved this place is. We arrived just before noon, queued without a reservation, and were fortunate enough to be seated.
A very special shoutout goes to Hanna, who made the entire experience exceptional. She was attentive without being intrusive, always checking on us regularly, ensuring we always had water, never rushing us to order, and offering helpful recommendations. Her warmth and professionalism elevated our first French dining experience into a memory we’ll never forget.
The food itself was simply outstanding, with portions more than generous. We enjoyed two formules du midi:
• Pizza Gril’Laure, hearty and delicious.
• L’assiette bourguignonne, a wonderful sampler that brought together Dijon’s specialties in miniature form. Yes, there’s an escargot mini burger. They use firewood for the grilling and you can see it live.
For starters, we had escargots, a must-try in Burgundy. For dessert, the café gourmand (espresso with an array of miniature desserts) and fromage blanc were the perfect finish. To drink, we discovered the local Kir, a Dijon specialty of raspberry syrup flavoured wine.
Every dish was beautifully prepared and full of flavor. Combined with Hanna’s impeccable service, the experience was unforgettable.
👉 Our advice: arrive by 11:45 if you don’t have a reservation. it’s worth the wait!
À Hanna,
Nous te remercions énormément pour ton accueil et ta gentillesse. Merci d’avoir fait de notre premier repas à Dijon un très beau souvenir. 💐

Staff were absolutely incredible. Food missing the mark by far. Definitely edible. But for the price and what is described on the menu it misses the mark by far! If you’ve travelled Europe and had good food you will be disappointed by the food quality. Wine and kids menu was the best part of the night. Kids meals are €10. But €50 for a bottle of wine and €50 per adult for food we left disappointed. Overall, I would rate the experience good , but not anywhere near my expectations.

Service was excellent. Really enjoyed the escargot and foie grass starters. The rib steak was excellent, and you could taste the wood it had been cooked over. Great wine selection as well, and a really good creme brulee. A couple of issues; the 3 x skewers (beef, duck and chicken) were cut inconsistently so most were overcooked and pretty tough, and the Thai style pasta dish had overcooked pasta and could have used a bit more Thai flavor. Still had a great evening, and recommend.

If I could give this place six stars, I would! We had a wonderful dinner—the food was exceptional, and the atmosphere was perfect. Our waiter was incredibly attentive and proactive in making sure everything went smoothly. Even though we don't speak French, he made communication effortless and welcoming. Highly recommended!

Few restaurants are open Sunday in Dijon so we were a bit uncertain about a hotel restaurant. It was wonderful!
The atmosphere was warm welcoming and comfortable with a great vibe that is certainly cheeky. Service was attentive despite being quite busy suddenly. The duck confit croquettes needed a little salt but otherwise were crisp and creamy in all the right ways. The steak tartare was cut perfectly and was well balanced while the luxurious (dare I say over the top) pasta with ham cheese and poached egg left us stuffed. What better way to finish then an espresso and a surprise Ace.
Nicely done.

It was Christmas Eve. The restaurant was super busy. You can tell some staffs were part-timers, but doing their best. We ordered too much and were too full, otherwise the foods would be magnificent.

The meat platter was actually quite delicious and filling. We contemplated ordering more food after that. We also ordered the duck and steak. The steak was a tiny bit burnt but really really good. The restaurant has a very classic fun vibe to it. I’d probably dine here again!

We have been here for dinner. We made a reservation in advance and were placed in far last corner of the room. It felt like being punished ..
The service is terribly slow, we had to cancel the last order, because they did not manage to bring it in time.
The food itself was ..well, ok. It was nothing special to be remembered and it wasn’t so bad that you couldn’t eat it.
For a town which is known for good food and wine, this was a complete desaster..I‘m sorry guys, but that’s my honest opinion..

Food was so good
The services was just ok
The location was convenient
The sofa where we sat was uncomfortable 😣
We had lowerback pain after dinner.

A beautiful restaurant which welcomes dogs.
We made the reservation because of the excellent google reviews and were really looking forward to our dinner.
We ordered four different meals. The fish of the day was good and the risotto was okay, but not worth the excellent reviews this restaurant has.
The duck on the menu was not further specified as “grilled”.
The duck was ordered medium rare. It came black on the outside and more rare than medium rare on the inside.
We have never given back a dish in a restaurant before but more than 3/4 of the duck tasted burned and was dry on both ends.
We politely told the waitress about the situation and she politely excused herself and took the plate.
So far so good. What followed was the unthinkable:
She was sent back from the kitchen with the very same plate and - openly embarrassed - put the dish back on the table expressing that the kitchen told her to say the meat was good, prepared on the grill and that the taste of burn and everything else was normal.
We then told her to please take away the plate because none of us would eat it anymore as we had already told them before.
Another waitress was sent to us telling us - pretty rudely and angrily - that the food was perfectly fine, that the kitchen staff tried it and that they wouldn’t prepare another duck but we should choose a different dish. Obviously we gladly accepted the offer and thought - finally - the situation was resolved. I personally wasn’t able to enjoy my own fish of the day any longer because of the huge scene it caused that we sent back the one plate that was actually not edible.
Stil, they actually took the escalation one step further and sent out the restaurant boss, a piece of duck in hand and mouth, chewing, telling us in French how well it tasted.
We speak nearly no French but English, Spanish, German & Dutch, he only spoke French so a communication was impossible and he went away chewing on the duck he liked so much.
All in all it was the worst dinner of my life. I felt terribly uncomfortable and was really sorry to have spent 402€ in this person’s hotel next to the restaurant for 1 night and 175€ for the dinner and still been treated that way.

A French diner chain with a personable name and a strong appeal to young people. The space is definitely sufficient.
Those who received a recommendation from the Holiday Inn receive a 15% discount, although the menu offers are already calculated very fairly.
There are four types of draft beer, countless desserts and of course everything to do with steaks and burgers. The house brands of mayonnaise and mustard are damn tasty and definitely recommended.
The staff is very quick and friendly. We keep the evening in good memory.

The burger beef patty is so small and thin; the whole burger is small actually. Does not look like the menu picture. It tasted good but I was surprised by how small it was for the price. Not worth the money.
Thomas Kunselman (Thom K in Aix)★★★★★
Great food, specializing in grilled meats.
I didn't enjoy the duck. It tasted like beef to me, but the proprietor insisted it was duck. It was very tasty beef, so I did enjoy my meal after the initial surprise.
This resto doesn't snub non-French diners. You always know when that's happening because they don't bring you bread and are always surprised, difficult and slow when you ask for une carafe d'eau.
This resto was not that way at all. The bread was fast and quickly refilled, both without asking. The tap water showed up soon after being requested.
The grilled skewers of meat were cooked to perfection and the menu has a handy guide to request the perfect state of doneness.
Very important in France where the French love their beef bloody.
The fraish creamed? cheese and basil appetizer was good and a nice change from pesto. The ouef mayonnaise, I was expecting devilled eggs, but was a hard boiled egg cut in half with a mayonnaise mustard mix spread on top. Delicious but would have been better if the yolk had been mixed in it: Both in appearance, taste and texture.

I recently visited a charming restaurant that left a lasting impression from the moment I walked in. The ambiance was warm and inviting, with soft lighting, tasteful decor, and a calm atmosphere that made it perfect for both casual dining and special occasions. The staff were attentive, professional, and genuinely welcoming, ensuring that every detail of the experience felt effortless.
The menu offered a well-balanced selection of dishes, combining fresh ingredients with creative presentation. I ordered the grilled salmon, which was cooked to perfection—tender, flavorful, and complemented by a beautifully seasoned side of vegetables. The portion sizes were generous without being overwhelming, striking a satisfying balance.
One of the highlights was the attention to quality and consistency. Every dish served at nearby tables looked equally appealing, suggesting strong kitchen standards. The dessert, a rich chocolate fondant, was the perfect ending—decadent without being overly sweet.
Overall, this restaurant delivers a refined yet comfortable dining experience. Whether you are looking for a relaxed evening or a memorable meal, it stands out as a place worth returning t

Just for the location of this restaurant, next to the magnificent building of the "Grand Théâtre" and opposite the churches of "Saint Stephen's" and "Saint Michael's", it is worth visiting to absorb the beauty of the space on the "place du Théâtre".
The food was excellent! Especially the "Joue de boeuf à la Bourguignonne" was delicious. Also, the "Croustillant de Chèvre Chaud" had a special and distinct taste, which is worth trying.
Finally, do not miss the wonderful wine "Pinot Noir Bourg".
Cinny Tsai★★★★★
We arrived here quite by chance, and it turned out to be the best meal of our trip in Dijon.
Joue de bœuf bourguignon was super flavourful, well-balanced, and really comforting.œuf meurette was also great. And the red wine we randomly picked (Mercurey 1er Cru 2020) paired perfectly with everything.
If you’re in the mood for good, traditional French food, this place is definitely worth a stop.
Natalia Govor★★★★☆
We went here very spontaneously but it was definitely a good idea! The food was pretty good and the portions were equally filling. They have a few typical french dishes on the menu which was nice. The Service was decent. Especially the women staff there are very friendly and welcoming. I would recommend reserving a table if you want to sit inside though because its seems to be very popular. It is a bit more on the expensive side but it makes sense, because of the calm area and the nice view you have while eating:)

We had high expectations given the many 5 star reviews, but must report that the food fell well short of 5 stars. For entrees, I had roasted chestnut soup and my wife had lentils. The lentils were very tastie with many layers of flavor, and was presented beautifully, 5-star. My soup was good, but the cream was placed by a heavy hand which overwhelmed the chestnuts and the lack of truffles was disappointing, though again, a nice presentation, 4-star.
Wife's plate was pappardelle with pumpkin cream sauce. The pasta was dry and barely warm, without much flavor, tasting neither of pumpkin, sage nor pecorino, 2-star. My plate was "roasted" chicken with a celeriac slaw. The chicken was indeed Sous vide, not roasted. If chef is serving sous vide chicken, it should be finished on a charcoal grill or at least a very hot pan. It wasn't finished, was rubbery and tasteless, nearly inedible. The supreme sauce lacked richness and was less than supreme. Overall the chicken dish rated 2-star, saved from 1-star only by the celeriac slaw.
Overall the presentation of the plates was beautifully accomplished, unfortunately the flavors didn't match the pretty food. It's not enjoyable to leave a review as poor as this one, but I believe it to be objective and fair.

We were guests of our friends. A very quaint restaurant. I found the menu way too limited, however what we received, although modified a bit without cream, was delicious. Service was good initially then was non existent when our food was delivered. Bread was not offered, although was sitting in a basket on the counter next to us. Not our kind of place to return to.

A must-try in town.
Saison manages to provide an elevated experience both in terms of cuisine and service while managing to maintain a cosy environment, complimented by the abundance of natural light in both the FOH and the spacy terrace.
The menu provides a good equilibrium in homy Italian feel, and modern French eatery. The drinks menu also offer a refreshingly varied selection of soft drinks, in addition to a carefully curated wine list.
Alice Buszard★★★★★
Flavourful seasonal food that is both classical and creative. The restaurant is impeccably designed and each table feels very private despite being in an open setting. Walking in, you feel assured about the quality of the menu and service, neither of which disappoint. The lunch menu is very affordable for what feels like a special meal (€35 for entrée, plat, dessert). Our waitress was friendly and attentive, providing excellent advice on wine pairing. Definitely recommended if visiting Dijon for a refined but unfussy meal.

Worth every penny! Best value during lunch hour, set menu for 30-35 euro including appetizer, main course and deserts. Each dish was well prepared with layers of tastes in the mouth. The best meal

I love L’Abenfant. Behind the unassuming exterior and decor are a team of consummate hosts and confident chefs. The welcome and service was warm and friendly and the pacing of the meal was perfect. I chose the poultry pate croute to start, the pork with beetroot and blackcurrant for the main course and the fig, tarragon and honey to finish. The pork dish was the highlight of the meal - the pairing of the sweet pork and earthy beetroot made for a well-balanced dish. The dessert was also delicious, and showcased the quality and flavour of the fresh fruit, which was accompanied by delicately sweetened cream and a buttery biscuit tart base. The only thing that would have made the meal even better is if the pork was a touch less ‘done’. I would most certainly return to L’Abenfant when next in Dijon. Thank you for such a thoroughly enjoyable meal.

New comments after the owner’s reply:
I didn’t complain because you was not able to give me a table, the reason I complained was your attitude! The way you talk to me, the reason I have been trying to check whether I can sit outside, finish earlier or wait for if any cancellation will be made was all because it was my last night here and I was very hoping to eat in your place, and I was asking in a very nice and almost begging even, but what you did and how you replied was so impolite, arrogant and impatient. Look at other comments in google with lowest rating, all because of the same reason! You are not honest to yourself and couldn’t realise your problem and no idea at all about the appropriate way to manage a restaurant, sorry for you and good luck!
You even want to put rating for your customer, ridiculous it is. You really need a customer service training.
Original comment: I can’t say anything about the food as I wasn’t able to sit here. The owner is very arrogant and impolite, I was told no chance to have a table tonight as it was fully booked. But the way he said to me was very rude and make me feel embarrassing, I don’t understand it why he is treating customer like that. He was just saying I can’t take any more people, keep repeating it and then turn back to me and go away. Shocked! All Dijon people have been sooooo nice until I met him. Customer service is one of most important elements for hospitality and restaurant, and I won’t go back to here even if it’s 5 star rating!

The perfect place in Dijon to experience the local atmosphere and taste. In front of the old Justice Court, around the corner of Liberation Square, this absolute gem serve fresh local dishes for the ridiculous price of €31,- for a 3-course dinner. The waiter is very friendly and knowledgeable and even gave us amazing tips for local bars and go-to’s. We enjoyed it so much that we immediately made a reservation for the next day. Be aware that the restaurant only serves between 19h00 and 21h00 and was fully booked on the two days that we visited (Thursday and Friday), so I advise you to make an reservation to avoid any disappointment 🙂 Would absolutely recommend!

Hidden gem in the center of the city but away from the crowds and noise. The waiter was really nice and helped us to understand every dish of the menu in English, really good traditional french food and right price for good quality. I highly recommend it!

We had great lunch experience in this charming restaurant. It is one man band show - chef is also serving you. In this regard even more impressive as dishes are creative, tasty, visually appealing. Chef is very nice, explains everything and is very generous in wine pouring 😊. Value for the money - great.

Top notch dining experience. Jeremy, who is both the chef and server, ensured we understood the options thoroughly, had wonderful wine pairing recommendations, and delivered on deliciously unique and beautifully plated cuisine that exceeded our expectations. Delightfully engaging and knowledgeable, we were well taken care of while he also tended to his other groups (one of which was a birthday celebration that he delivered a pastry with a massive sparkler atop).

It was raining like cats and dogs and the waiter has refused to give us a sit pointing out that they do not speak English and push us to the door. Not friendly, not welcome.

We were excited to try this restaurant when we stumbled upon it while planning our vacation. The photos that people have posted show how much attention they pay to display, but their beauty pales in comparison to their taste. Between the three of us we tried almost everything on the April 2025 menu. From the delicate and creamy egg and asparagus tart amuse-bouche all the way to chocolate egg mousse at the end, the flavours were delicate and balanced, paring beautifully between each of the three dishes presented. As someone who does not know much about wine, the option to include drink pairings was a blessing that really enhanced the experience for me. The escargot with black garlic oil was a standout - I don’t think I have tasted anything so wonderful before. The ravioli with mustard sauce was my wife’s favourite. The lone waiter did an amazing job looking after all the patrons and made us (who do not speak French very well) feel extremely welcomed. If you are in or near Dijon, I cannot recommend Trilogie et Saveurs highly enough. Merci Beaucoup!

The chef is the server and he is a delight. Full of great wine recommendations and heavy pours. The food was fun, each course delicious. We especially loved the dessert of ice cream and meringue (vacherin).

Fantastic Experience Near Les Halles.
We stopped in without a reservation and were still seated within about 15 minutes, which already felt like a win. The owner herself greeted us-she was incredibly sweet, welcoming, and genuinely accommodating. She even ended up serving us personally, which added such a warm, family‑style touch to the whole evening. The food was absolutely delicious. I had the boeuf bourguignon, rich and perfectly cooked, and my wife enjoyed the escargot and duck-both dishes were outstanding. Everything tasted fresh, comforting, and authentically local.
The location right next to the Les Halles market makes it an easy and charming stop during a day in the area. Overall, a wonderful experience with great food and even better hospitality. Highly recommend.

A very nice place, in the center of Dijon where you can fully enjoy the Burgundian cuisine.
The food was excellent and the service waiting times were good considering the the place was almost full.
In full season a reservation is highly recommended for dinner.
See the attached pictures to see some of the dishes we had and we are highly recommending.

We were lucky enough to get the last table for two without a reservation. Simple wholesome food - the gratin ravioles was my only option (vegetarian) but I was more than happy with it.
Highly recommended - book in advance, though 😏.
Dijon is beautiful.

Maybe it’s my expectation that’s misaligned with the places intention, but it felt like cheap American fast food. The potatoes are very oily, and the salad is just a leaf of lettuce.
Don’t get me wrong, it tastes nice. But it’s not good quality.

Tips for Ordering Steak in Dijon
Understanding the local customs and menu terminology will significantly enhance your dining experience. French steakhouses operate slightly differently than their American or British counterparts, and knowing what to expect ensures you get exactly the meal you are craving without any surprises when the bill arrives.
- Understand the Doneness Scale: French terms differ from English. "Bleu" is essentially seared on the outside and cold inside, "Saignant" is rare, "À point" is medium-rare to medium, and "Bien cuit" is well done. If you want medium, ask for "à point" rather than "médium."
- Look for Charolais on the Menu: This is the premium local breed. If a restaurant specifies "Boeuf Charolais" or "AOP Charolles," you are likely getting a high-quality, locally sourced product. It is worth the slight premium.
- Check the Sauce: While a great steak can stand alone, French sauces are half the experience. Don’t skip the "Sauce au Poivre" (peppercorn) or "Sauce Béarnaise." If you see a local variation with Époisses cheese or Dijon mustard, order it.
- Reservations are Essential: Dijon is a compact city, and the best tables fill up quickly, especially on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. Even for lunch during the week, it is highly recommended to call ahead or book online.
- Sides are Usually A La Carte: Unlike many steakhouses in the US where a side salad and potato are included, in France, your steak often comes alone. You will usually need to order "frites," "gratin dauphinois," or a green salad separately.
- Embrace the "Formule": Many brasseries offer a "Formule" or "Menu du Jour" at lunchtime. While it might not always feature a premium cut, it is an excellent way to taste the chef’s style at a fraction of the dinner price. Check if a steak option is available on the set menu.
The steak scene in Dijon is a testament to the city’s rich culinary heritage. It is not just about the meat itself, but the entire ritual—the crusty bread to mop up the juices, the robust local Burgundy wine in your glass, and the convivial atmosphere of a French dining room. Whether you are fueling up after exploring the Ducal Palace or celebrating a special occasion, a meal at one of these establishments offers a true taste of Burgundy.
Ultimately, the best steakhouse is the one that matches your specific vibe, whether that is a historic cellar or a modern grill. Trust the local sourcing, be adventurous with the sauces, and enjoy the leisurely pace of French dining in one of the country’s most gastronomically significant cities.
