Carcassonne is world-famous for its fortified medieval citadel, but beyond the ramparts and cobbled lanes lies a food scene that is quietly evolving. While the region of Occitanie is historically known for cassoulet and duck confit, plant-based and vegetable-forward dining has found a confident foothold here. Travelers no longer have to compromise on atmosphere or flavor to enjoy a meat-free meal in this historic city.
For vegetarians, navigating French menus can sometimes feel like a challenge, as traditional brasseries often lean heavily on meat and fish. However, Carcassonne offers a growing selection of restaurants that celebrate fresh produce, regional cheeses, and creative cooking techniques. From cozy crêperies to refined bistros, the options are more diverse than many visitors expect.
This guide focuses on establishments that genuinely understand vegetarian cuisine rather than simply offering a single token salad. We have evaluated kitchens based on the quality of their ingredients, the creativity of their plant-based dishes, and their willingness to accommodate dietary preferences. The goal is to help you eat well without spending your holiday hunting for suitable options.
Many of these restaurants source from local markets in the Aude department, ensuring that vegetables, legumes, and cheeses reflect the terroir of southern France. Whether you are a strict vegetarian, a flexitarian, or simply looking for a lighter meal after too much rich food, you will find something satisfying here. The emphasis is on flavor, hospitality, and a genuine welcome for non-meat eaters.
Understanding the local dining culture helps set expectations. Lunch service in France is often a set menu, while dinner tends to be more à la carte. Booking ahead is wise, especially in the high season when the narrow streets of La Cité fill with tourists. A little planning ensures you secure a table at the places most committed to vegetable-led cooking.
Below is a curated list of the best vegetarian restaurants in Carcassonne, selected for their consistency and dedication to plant-based dining. Each entry offers something distinct, from casual lunches to elegant evening meals.

Unfortunately not a great meal. Bland and out-dated. The atmosphere was dead and the cost was far too high for the uninspiring food that anyone who has ever seen a kitchen before could have made.
However, the waiter did look after us very well.
We did appreciate the attempt at vegetarian/vegan options but we still would not come back here.
Anna Said★★★★★
Recommended by tourist information as vegetarian friendly. Three course set lunch €20. Beautifully presented. Choices for vegan and vegetarian with meat and fish options for whole family. Very friendly owner. Spoke English. Great atmosphere.

Beautiful place and delicious cuisine. This place could be missed at your peril! I am relieved I found it by chance and it’s excellent quality menu. Very good value for money in my view. I would say definitely make time for Le 104 when you’re in Carcassonne.
Sab Saadi-Clark★★★★★
Everything is upstairs except for the toilets. They have a terrace with half a dozen tables. The indoor section is spacious. They play background music, jazz; which was really pleasant.
The 2 waiters serving us were efficient. One was particularly funny. The other one might have been new because he never managed to answer any of our question without checking with his colleague.
My husband chose the cold soup. Very similar to a Gaspacho but obviously home made and chunky. I do not remember what my starter was but it obviously had parmesan shavings. I would have remembered it if it hasn't been nice.
I chose the fish, It rested on the vegetables, they were cooked to perfection, still a little firm. The lemon sauce seeped through into the vegetables.Yam!
However, my husband found his vegetables dry. He would have liked to have the steak resting on the vegetables, for them to absorb the jus.
The Fondant was melting to perfection and the lemon dessert was just so light, it kind of melted in your mouth.
I will come back again.

Excellent restaurant with vegetarian and gluten free options. The service was great and the food was very tasty too. I'd recommend it.

100% recommend this new place in town! Walked in at 9:30pm and warmly received for dinner. Had the most delicious tuna ceviche and crispy pork with fries and coleslaw on the side. Delicious fresh ingredients and generous portion sizes for tapas! Unfortunately we were too full for dessert but they sounded great, too.
sadie king★★★★★
Delicious wholesome food - unpretentious. Like the short menu options - means fresher ingredients.
Still some teething problems with service but hopefully, once the waitering staff are trained up, it’ll be smoother and faster.
Overall, we loved it.
Laura Kendrick★★★★★
Walked past Petani and we were curious, the food was so fresh and delicious - the Tuna especially! I think they’re newly opened but the service was great, they served us a delicious meal despite the fact I think they were closing, I recommend!

We had a lovely lunch at Petani. Everything is fresh and well prepared. Loved the fish as the starter and the chicken as a main. Definitely recommending to family and friends!

Had a lovely dinner here last night - the food overall was excellent, and in particular the mains were delicious. Our only issue was the starters, as they were priced almost the same as the mains but are far smaller in portion size.
The restaurant itself is in a beautiful location with a lovely garden where we sat for our meal. Staff were friendly and the service wasn't rushed. A very nice evening.
Kathryn Faulkner★★★★★
We decided to eat at Le Cachotier because one of us (me) doesn't eat beef or pork and I was craving some veg. This restaurant's menu looked lighter than others and it did not disappoint! We shared a starter of tomato "carpaccio" with buffalo cheese. My husband ordered the cassioulet and I ordered the salmon with roasted veg. We both thoroughly enjoyed the will presented and fresh food and left full. The back garden was so relaxing and charming and the waiter was so friendly. We'd definitely return and recommend.
Anthony Tripp★★★★★
We didn't have a reservation (advisable) but was found a very nicely situated table for two. Food and service were excellent. So many restaurants in this square. Would say this was one of the best.
Deb★★★★★
The shaded terrace is really a plus point, and they are extremely dog friendly. Service is a little slow but the food is indeed good. Definitely recommend.
Lucas Klamert★★★★★
We enjoyed our dinner here. The backyard is quiet and attractive. That makes for a much nicer dining experience than out front on the main square. The food was nice, albeit not spectacular. Value for money, considering the touristy place. Generally recommended.

Perfect pizza and home made apple tart to die for. Great spot with live music.
Mark Mentha★★★★★
Wonderful restaurant catering for both vegetarian and meat eaters. Delightful food - 3 course lunch for 25€ was great value. Attentive service in a neighbourhood of Carcassonne away from the tourist rip off restaurants. Worth the 15 minute walk from the centre for good quality nosh in a quirky setting.
Julia Dixon★★★★★
Super little restaurant in a residential neighbourhood of Carcassone. Do book a table as it’s very popular with locals! The blackboard changes daily depending on what is seasonal. The set price evening menu at €31 is great value!
Tassilo Kubitz★★★★★
It's a little hidden and you're guaranteed not to pass by by mistake. However, it's so busy at lunchtime that you need a reservation. There are lots of seats outside and lots in the shade. Everything is individually prepared with love and the service is excellent and professional. At lunchtime, there's not just the formule but also a la carte dishes. The craft beer from the Cite is a popular thirst quencher.

It was a lovely restaurant that serves French food. The atmosphere is super nice and the food is good. I ordered Duck plate and it did not disappoint. Minor annoyance: menu was not printed and it was hand written on a big desk, it was hard to read and we had to ask the hosts to explain things.

Delicious food, and the set menu was very good value. The red wine was very yummy as well. Staff were very friendly and spoke good English. Multiple buckets of free bread for the table was lovely.

Lovely restaurant.
Scorching hot Friday evening, so a nice shaded spot with a cooling breeze, great to sit outside.
Arrived just after 7pm opening so seating no problem but gradually got busier.
Had light meals but looked enviously at the wonderful looking cassoulet being served to nearby patrons.
Very reasonably priced too.
Caroline Sargent★★★★★
If you’re in Carcassonne and vegan I would definitely recommend the vegan options here. They do serve other stuff too but the vegan gazpacho, cassoulet and crumble were delicious. Friendly staff, good music, can sit inside or out. Note evening meals don’t start till 7pm
Dave Proffer★★★★☆
Came here based on Happy Cow listing. Waitstaff excellent, knew vegan selections well, super friendly.
Had the veggie crudites, shared a vegan cassolette, and a berry crumble with sorbet. All were fantastic! I think that the cassolette was a little dry for my taste, and could have used a little more spices (rosemary, herbes, pepper?), but who am I to judge.
nat M.A★★★★★
Great options for vegan people. Food nicely done and the service is very good and thoughtful.
Drinks are also well made. And the deserts for those that aren't vegan I would certainly recommended the profiteroles

Absolutely amazing scallops, great foie gras, great service.
Amazing prices!
The chocolate lava could have been hot.
Regis Bouchard★★★★☆
Very pleased overall.
The atmosphere was cozy, and the staff were attentive and focused on making our experience as pleasant as possible.
English menus were available, which was very helpful.
The food featured typical French dishes and tasted great, with a good range of options to choose from.
The only drawback was that the snails were a bit disappointing, as the flavour of the parsley butter wasn’t there.
Will definitely come back on our next visit to Carcassonne.
Paul Szydlowski★★★★★
Best meal I had in France, and the dessert what so good.
Ernesta Kondrasoviene★★★★★
A wonderful place with incredibly friendly staff. The food was excellent, and the service was absolutely outstanding. My daughter is a picky eater and doesn’t eat everything, but Thomas went above and beyond to have a new dish prepared especially for her. 😊 Everyone made us feel so welcome, and we all left happy. Thank you for such a fantastic experience we would definitely come back!

After trying way too many French restaurants and getting disappointed every time (we basically gave up on eating out), we decided to give this Lebanese spot a shot. Man, I’m glad we did. The food is really good, that hummus is amazing, and overall we weren’t disappointed at all. The service was a teenager doing his best, but the quality of the food is straight 5 stars.
Alex Coma★☆☆☆☆
I rarely write negative reviews, but given the solid ratings and the price point here, I feel this needs to be shared.
We arrived at 9:10 PM—well before the advertised 10:30 PM closing time—after a full day on the road. The restaurant wasn't full, yet the service was incredibly slow and disorganized. We waited unattended just to be seated, another 10 minutes for menus, 20 minutes for cutlery, and finally, I had to walk into the kitchen to track down the waitress to place our order.
We were finally served at 10:40 PM. While the food itself was pretty good even though the portions quite small for the price, the overall experience was severely lacking. They forgot one of our items, told us a simple mint tea was unavailable, and served us with dirty cutlery and bowls. The dining room itself was also cluttered with uncleared, dirty dishes.
To make matters worse, the atmosphere was incredibly uncomfortable. We could hear the owner screaming at the young waitress in the kitchen. When the owner eventually came out to ask how our meal was, I complimented the food but politely mentioned that a heads-up about the hour-long wait would have been appreciated so we could have made other plans. Instead of apologizing, he became aggressive, blaming us for arriving "so late" and complaining about how long his shift had been.
To top it off, I had to ask them to remove a 3€ charge for water we never received. Terrible administration, a highly unprofessional owner, and an uncomfortable environment. I should have read the lower-rated reviews before coming here. If you look at how he replies to other people's complaints online, you will see the exact same aggressive, hostile energy he directed at us in person.
UPDATE: I just read the owner's reply to my review, and his version of events is a complete lie. While we were waiting, my partner and I actually spent the time discussing how strange it was that a teenager seemed to be left entirely alone to serve and prep food, and we felt terrible for her. It turned out she wasn't alone at all, we just didn't know he was there until we heard him screaming at her from the kitchen. He never stepped foot out of the back until 10:40 PM, making his reply completely fabricated. I genuinely feel bad for what seems to be his teenage daughter, who has to endure that environment and clearly doesn't want to be working there.
UPDATE TO MY UPDATE: he since then just took down his reply to my comment stating he had come to greet us at 10pm - which is when we supposedly arrived according to his lie- and that we chose to stay there even though he warned us of the time it would take. We can see the extend of his manipulation. Hope this helps you guys make a clear decision as to what kind of business you want to encourage.

Delicious Lebanese food with authentic flavors and generous portions. The hummus, falafel, and grilled meats are outstanding, and the desserts are a must-try. Cozy atmosphere and friendly, attentive staff make you feel welcome. A great spot to enjoy a flavorful meal!

Delicious food well presented, honest, tasty quick, simple! Reassuring with allergies- my partner is lactose intolerant, pregnant and has a mushroom allergy. They understood everything, no mushrooms, great food.

A wonderful hidden gem. The restaurant is accessed by ringing a doorbell that then buzzes you in to a historic entry with dramatic wood semicircular stairway. Then you are ushered into dining rooms that are authentic and untouched. Service was extremely friendly and prompt. I had the stewed beef with potato’s & fresh vegetables, my wife had the special bento. Both were beautifully presented and delicious. Highly recommend. This will be one of our regular must-go spots from now on.
Missy Peña★★★★★
There were two vegan options on the menu when I went, with a large assortment of vegan sorbet for dessert. Loved what I got - purple rice, potatoes, and lentils, cooked and seasoned to perfection. The new location is gorgeous, seems to be inside an old home from the 1800s or perhaps even older. Worth the price for the vibe and great vegan food - hard to find in Carcassonne.
Hilary Riley★★★★★
So good we went there twice! Home cooked food with a difference, a plate full of varied grains, veg and flavours that were just beautifully presented and complemented each other! Highly recommend, Virginia was a superb host too, made us feel very welcome!
Iveta Murdoch★★★★★
We had a lovely welcome from Veirginie, the food was great we had noodles with chicken and vegs, amazing dressing, lovely little restaurant, we had a chat with the owner, who told us she used to work for big restraurants, but had enough and decided to bring her experience and run this small but unique place and prepare home made fusion food. We enjoyed few hours there and would definetely go back!

This charming restaurant right near the train station is a gem. The restauranteur is as delightful as her venue. Interesting and delicious menu - a pleasant change of pace from the standard local fare. Try the duck!

It's a truly heartwarming place. It feels like visiting good friends: delicious home-cooked food, a cozy atmosphere, and incredibly warm hospitality. It's clear the owners put their heart and soul into this place, and that's what makes you want to come back.
We tried chicken kebab, liver shashlik, and muhammara with walnuts - everything was delicious.

Some of the best food we’ve found in the area, hands down. Hand made with care and attention, served by family with a smile (and excellent English!). The hot vine leaves, kibbeh galette, shawarma, knafeh, and cardamom-laden baklava were all stunning. Will be returning for sure!

Delicious. Everything is homemade inhouse which is a luxury in today’s world. Also feels healthy despite very generous portions. Authentic too. High high recommend

Small, family-run restaurant-bar offering Middle Eastern cuisine, with charming service and very tasty, fresh food made on-site. Prices are very affordable, and the atmosphere is warm and home-like—just like during a much-appreciated family visit.
Everything is advised, prepared, and served by the owners themselves, which makes the experience truly personal and authentic. Although the place itself does not give the impression of fine dining, the culinary experience is of top quality. There is also a takeaway service available.
I wish there were more such authentic and genuinely customer-friendly places.

This is a lovely little cafe in a quiet part of Carcassonne run by a very friendly Iraqi couple. Being vegetarian we were really after something more wholesome after weeks away. Mhammara, lentil salad, baba ganoush, and falafel with salad and frites. All was wonderful. I wouldn’t say it’s a choice for a romantic evening meal but at lunchtime it was fabulous.

We had a lovely tasting menu and a lovely bottle of local Fitou. Food and service were exceptional! Only minor criticism would be that it is quite a sterile room with functional tables and table cloths.
Loaivan★★★★★
Many restaurants here felt overly touristy, but this one stood out with its cozy atmosphere. Aside from the soup, which was a bit watery and bland, the rest of the dishes were rich and satisfying. The egg special was loaded with mushrooms, and the cassoulet was a generous, hearty portion.
Sandra WILLIAMS★★★★★
We were in Carcassonne for 3 nights recently. Our first night, we picked a place at random and were very disappointed with the quality of the food, however on our 2nd night we ate at Table d'Alais which I had researched before coming and had pre-booked.
We were not disappointed. There are several levels of fixed price menu to choose from, as well as à la carte, varying from 26€ to €79 and, whilst the menu is small in options, what there is, is delicious. I had a cold veloute mise en bouche , octopus for my main course which came with a jet black cushion of potato coloured with squid ink - never seen anything like it before and it was intriguing. The octopus was perfectly cooked and the potato was creamy with hidden lardons of bacon, and a perfectly presented dessert. My friends had veal which was served pink and was lovely, and risotto, was was tasty, but could have been warmer.
The staff were efficient and allowed us to taste a few wines before committing to one we liked (not something offered everywhere) and the bill, including a decent tip came to €180 for us all - very reasonable for high quality food, wine and service.
The dining space is quite small, but is air conditioned, making it a very pleasant experience overall.
If you like elegant dining, then I recommend Table d'Alais to you.
Paul Cranfield★★★★★
Really enjoyed our lunch here. The service was great and very attentive. The food was delicious! Would highly recommend.
Michelle Nguyen★★★★★
We’ve dined here many times and are never disappointed. On our most recent visit, we chose the €65 dégustation menu, which offered more than enough food and an exceptional overall experience. The amuse-bouche — a crab bisque with octopus — was outstanding and set the tone for the meal. The canette was remarkably tender, easily among the best duck I’ve had, melting in the mouth and beautifully complemented by its accompaniments.
Every course was thoughtfully composed, with flavors that worked together seamlessly and demonstrated the chef’s excellent palate. The quality is consistently high, the portions generous for the price, and the ambiance and service both refined and welcoming. If you have the opportunity, I highly recommend visiting.
Practical Tips for Finding Vegetarian Food in Carcassonne
Even with a solid list of dedicated restaurants, knowing how to navigate the broader culinary landscape of Carcassonne will make your trip smoother. French dining culture is changing, but a few strategic habits will help you avoid disappointment and discover hidden gems. These tips come from direct experience with local menus, service styles, and seasonal availability.
Learn key French phrases. Being able to say "Je suis végétarien(ne)" or ask "Est-ce qu’il y a un plat sans viande ni poisson?" opens doors. Many servers appreciate the effort and will guide you more willingly than if you simply shake your head at the menu.
Look for crêperies and Lebanese or North African restaurants. These cuisines naturally feature vegetarian-friendly dishes such as galettes with cheese and egg, falafel, hummus, and vegetable tagines. They are often your safest bet outside dedicated vegetarian spots.
Check the "formule du midi" at lunch. Many bistros offer a fixed-price lunch menu that includes a vegetable starter and a cheese plate. Even if the main course is meat-based, you can often assemble a satisfying meal by combining starters and sides.
Ask about hidden vegetable dishes. French kitchens frequently have off-menu vegetable gratins, stuffed tomatoes, or omelets available if you ask politely. The worst they can say is no, but many chefs are proud to showcase seasonal produce.
Visit the local markets. The Place Carnot market and the covered market at Les Halles are excellent places to buy fresh fruit, bread, cheese, and prepared vegetarian snacks. Building a picnic from market finds is a wonderful way to eat well while enjoying the city’s medieval atmosphere.
Be cautious with seemingly vegetarian soups and sauces. French cooking often uses chicken stock or lardons as a flavor base, even in dishes that appear meat-free. A quick question about "bouillon de légumes" versus "bouillon de volaille" can save you from an unwanted surprise.
Carcassonne rewards curious eaters who are willing to explore beyond the main tourist drags. The restaurants listed above prove that vegetarian dining here can be as memorable as the city’s medieval architecture. With a little planning and the right questions, you can enjoy the best of Occitanie’s produce without compromise.
The city’s food scene continues to shift toward more inclusive menus, and your presence as a vegetarian diner encourages that progress. By choosing establishments that value vegetables, you support local farmers and chefs who are redefining what French cuisine can be. Bon appétit.
