Almería’s dining scene is a vibrant reflection of its geography, sitting at the crossroads of the Mediterranean Sea and the arid Tabernas Desert. The city offers a culinary journey that moves seamlessly from sun-drenched beachfront terraces to bustling tapas bars tucked into narrow, historic streets. Here, the produce of the “Sea of Plastic” greenhouses meets the daily catch of the local fishing fleet, creating a unique gastronomic identity.
The local culture revolves heavily around the art of “tapeo,” the Spanish tradition of hopping from bar to bar for a drink and a small bite. Unlike many Spanish cities where tapas have become an expensive luxury, Almería remains one of the last strongholds where a generous tapa is often included free with your drink. This makes exploring the food scene not just delicious, but incredibly accessible and budget-friendly.
Seafood is undeniably the star of the show, with specialties like gambas rojas (red prawns) and quisquilla defining the local palate. However, the Moorish influence is also present in the use of spices, dried fruits, and the hearty stews that sustained travelers crossing the nearby desert. You will find a beautiful tension between traditional Andalusian frying techniques and modern, avant-garde presentations.
Whether you are looking for a Michelin-starred tasting menu or a rustic plate of grilled sardines on the beach, the capital of the province of Almería has it all. The dining rooms range from historic taverns that have served wine for a century to sleek, minimalist spaces run by young, innovative chefs. The common thread between them all is the exceptional quality of the raw ingredients.
Navigating the dining hours is key to enjoying the city like a local. Lunch is the main meal of the day, typically served between 1:30 PM and 4:00 PM, while dinner rarely starts before 8:30 PM. Planning your day around these windows ensures you experience the restaurants at their liveliest and most atmospheric.
To help you cut through the noise and avoid tourist traps, we have curated a list of the essential dining destinations in the city. This guide focuses on establishments that prioritize quality, authenticity, and the unique flavors of the Almerían coast and countryside. From the finest dining rooms to the most iconic hole-in-the-wall tapas bars, this is where the locals actually eat.
Below is our selection of the best restaurants in Almería, offering a mix of traditional Andalusian cuisine, fresh seafood, and modern gastronomy.

We were driving through Almeria on our way to Malaga and I picked this restaurant as it already had 4.9 stars. It exceeded my expectations in any way possible. The server was very friendly. We ordered seafood paellla, goat cheese salad for lunch. The porsion of the salad was generous, good for 2 people. The paella was amazing. And the best part was our desserts: lava cake (one of the best I ever had and Im lava cake lover so I know what Im talking about) and the cheese cake. It came plain but the server poured melted chocolate, pistachio cream, crushed biscuit and pistachios on top of it in front of us and that was the pleasant surprise! The place was located at the heart of town, close to the cathedral, easy to find parking spot, very beautiful and cozy location. Price for the quality was very good as well. Highly recommend this restaurant. Make sure you order the lava cake, you won't regret it!

Lovely food and atmosphere. As English speakers who are bad at Spanish, the staff were very helpful and attentive. We ordered the paella and it was good for the 3x of us and very reasonably priced! Got busy after 8pm so would recommend booking in advance to secure a table. Highly recommend!

Really lovely spot in the heart of Almería. Staff are very attentive, food is made to order and is delivered fresh, hot, and delicious. Bummed we didn’t come here earlier in our stay, otherwise we would have came back.
Big portions! We got the vegetables with goat cheese log as a starter. Grilled onions, tomatoes, zucchini, sweet potato, peppers, potatoes, with a balsamic glaze and a cooked cheese log. Yes, we recommend- especially if you’re craving a veggie.
Then we got the carne paella, and it was SOOOOOO delicious. Seriously, a great dish. Would have loved to try the seafood or black paella.
Wine was lovely as well. We got a couple bonus (free) items, fried aubergine, bread and limoncello shots.
Highly recommend!!!! Come here, it’s great.

You know how sometimes you find a lemon, and sometimes a hidden gem? Well this is a hidden gem.
To be fair, we found it due to it's high reviews. But, I rang them from 2 hours away as we wanted to eat at soon as we arrived in Almería (eta 6:³⁰), but if you know Spain, you'll also know that that is neigh on impossible. Then add to that that you want a classy meal, with good service.
Limited options I can assure you. But, an incredibly agreeable and friendly person answered the phone, confirmed they serve food all afternoon and evening, and even WhatsApp'd me a local parking spot.
So, we came.
Lovely wine, some free aperitifs, salad to die for and the best Cod (pi pi) I've ever tasted.
OMG, well done us on such a good decision.
Service: Amazing
Food: Amazing
Situation: Great, in the middle of the old precinct.
Price: The right side of reasonable 😁
Seriously, this was such a nice evening.
Try it 👍

I visited this restaurant recently and had a good overall experience. The food was generally nice and fresh. The highlight of the meal was definitely the baked cheese with apple (tapas) – it was absolutely delicious. The combination of flavors was perfect, and it was the best dish we tried.
The rest of the food was good, but nothing very special. Everything was prepared correctly and tasted fine. We ordered a few tapas, and while they were tasty, the portions were a bit small. You may need to order more dishes if you are really hungry.
The drinks were also good, and we were happy with the quality. However, one thing surprised us – there was no separate drinks menu. This made it a bit difficult to choose what to order, because we had to ask the staff about the options.
The service was very nice and friendly. The staff was helpful, polite, and made us feel welcome during the whole visit.
Overall, it is a nice place to visit, especially if you want to try the baked cheese with apple. With slightly bigger portions and a proper drinks menu, it would be even better. We would definitely come back again in the future

Amazing place with fantastic service and great vibes.
Delicious and very reasonable tapas.
Worth visiting for the rolls de pepino alone!

First time in Almeria and we went to try tapas in a few places by far we enjoyed this place the most. Must try queso Frito. The service and ambiance are top notch. We will be back. David is super nice and recommended what to order.

We were really looking forward to eating here and exploring the tapas Menu. We sat down at a table outside where several other tables were free but also people were being served. The ration board looked good but when we enquired about tapas and drinks we were told that tapas were finished and that we couldn’t be served drinks. This was at 9.30 in the evening when other people were being served. The young waitress was extremely rude and dismissive and really needs to find work outside of the hospitality when she just needs to look at a monitor screen and be happy in her own thoughts. The most disgraceful service I have ever had in Spain.
Al A★★★★★
A wonderful find - this is the highest rated tapas bar on the mainly tapas street.
Owner was friendly and happy to give advice. And his recommendation of the fried cheese with caramelised apple was wonderful. It was so good, that I went to get another one the following day.
During the day, tables outside are in the sunshine. Perfect temperatures for enjoying Spring sunshine (with really cold beer).

DO NOT COME HERE the food is appalling, tuna was inedible and nasty, it was drowning in oil and even the amount of oil couldn’t cover the terrible unfresh rotten aftertaste of the bluefin tuna sashimi, not worth the price for the service given. If i was a chef and this is the quality and taste of food im giving out i will be dissapointed in my self and feel shame for my mom who had to spend 9 month carrying me. the food is a crime to society and shouldn’t be forgiven for the sin it have cause to the ingredients

A quirky place this. Kids will love it. It has some seating on a sort of scaffolding arrangement. If your elderly forget about if, get the normal seating. Is is not easy for the staff to get around due to this layout. This restaurant is located right at the beginning of the boardwalk for the beach region right after the Marina Yacht Club.
Food was ok, server tried his best in a busy night on his own most of the time.

Casa Puga is such a high energy, vibrant atmosphere. The staff is extremely hard working. All of the good is extremely rich, and flavorful. The mushrooms are to die for. The Aguja is so delicate and delicious. They use tuna belly, and it is the most rich, melt in your mouth fish I’ve had. If you need an energetic, lively night, go here. I visited 4 times in my time in Almeria , and it was 10000/10 every night I went.
Su Ni★★★★★
Casa Puga is one of those places that’s clearly popular the moment you arrive, packed both inside and outside, with a constant buzz of people. But with that popularity comes a bit of chaos. It’s not the kind of place where someone will guide you to a table or check in on you regularly, you really have to fight for a spot and be proactive if you want to get served.
We quickly realized that the bar area is mainly for tapas, and if you’re hoping to sit at a table, you’ll need some patience (and a bit of determination) to secure one. It’s all part of the experience, but definitely something to be aware of before going.
That said, once you manage to order, everything moves surprisingly fast. The food comes out quickly, and more importantly, it’s absolutely worth it. Simple, traditional, and full of flavor.
The highlights were definitely the tomatoes, fresh, rich, and perfectly dressed, and the gambas al pil pil, which were full of flavor and done just right.
Overall, it’s a lively, no-frills place where you trade comfort and service for authenticity and great food. If you go in with the right expectations, you’ll enjoy it a lot.
Ben Monks★★★★★
A great place for local Tapas and seafood! Really lively energy and we were the only tourists there which is usually a good sign! Food was delicious, only snag was we asked for the half portions and they gave us the full so it ended up being more expensive and filling them planned but still had a great meal and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
Anna A★★★★★
Old traditional tapas bar with several Michelin stars over the years. Most favourite with locals as people queue up before it opens daytime and evening. Very busy, very crowded, so get ready to embrace that ambience.

An excellent traditional Tapas bar in Almeria serving very good tapas with a drink, very busy with local people and a great atmosphere. Very good value for money and a must-visit if you're in Almeria.

This restaurant is an hidden treasure in the heart of Almeria The taxi job is at the end of the street and it look like it was just a residential street but then we saw the restaurant. It’s a very simple building but very welcoming.
Let me start by saying how amazing Lucas the Waiter, was he explained every dish out of the nine course tasting menu we had In both English and Spanish, I am English and my partner is Spanish
Now to the Food every dish has a little surprise I can’t go too much into that anyway because if you go to this restaurant which I definitely recommend you do even if you have one of the other menus let me just say that the food is amazing and I’ve eaten in some of the best restaurants in the world

We didn't have a reservation but fortunately were still able to get a seat. We enjoyed the tasting menu (the cauliflower bomb was one of our favorites). We received warm service and will never forget this experience (as well as the electric flower ☺️). Highly recommended!

My friends and I came here for our celebratory last night of our holiday and we could not have chosen a better place. The surprise tasting menu with wine pairing was genuinely exceptional and universally approved (and one or two of us can be a bit hesitant with novel flavour combinations normally). I particularly enjoyed the palate cleansers between courses and the gorgeous aesthetic details of the presentation, and our group were still talking about several of the dishes the next day (no spoilers!). Our enormous thanks must go to Lucas, our host, all the rest of the serving team, and of course, the whole kitchen for producing something so beautiful and being so very kind and friendly all evening.

We had the secret menu and we weren’t disappointed, dishes that burst with flavour and innovation including the electric flower to get your taste buds going. Excellent service.

This was such a lovely experience. Our server was fantastic and very patient with us as we fumbled through the language barrier. We did the chef's tasting menu with a wine pairing. I'm happy to report each course was tasty and unique. Our favorites were the "sashimi," the white fish with cauliflower mousse, and the short rib. The wine pairings toured us through Spain. The red wine was from Almeria - so fun! We spent €360 for 3 people: 3 chefs tasting, 3 wine pairings, 1 cheese board, 1 coffee. A fair price for what we got.

The best restaurant I have ever been. First we have appetizers. The dishes look like real pieces of arts. They all are divine in the mouth : an incredible blend of traditional and modern Spanish flavors. The wines are well-chosen and numerous. The music (classical guitar) is pleasurable. Waiters are real gentlemen. Prices are more than correct. According to me, there's everything you would expect from a Michelin star restaurant. And I hope they get one soon.

A delicious and varied selection of fresh Mexican flavours in a spacious restaurant with attentive staff and good margaritas- what more could you ask for! Excellent value for money, had to check they added up the bill right as it was so reasonable.

I visited this place because of the good reviews, but was very disappointed. I ordered the fajita de ternera. The food was lukewarm when served and therefore quickly cold. The meat was too fatty, even for veal, and very chewy. There was barely any sauce and no extras, except a tiny bit of onions and (for some weird reason) mushrooms. The tortillas were tiny. I paid way too much for what I got. I give 2 stars for the friendly service, but that's it. It's sad because I saw a lot of happy people and nice-looking dishes around me, but what I got was unappetizing.
Sarah M.★★★★★
I ate fajitas for the first time in my life and I really liked it. I took a mixed fajita with salsa verde & roja. The meat was tasty and so we're the vegetables.
I had a green apple margarita: just do it. It was so tasty.
That evening I was by myself and it's ideal for solo dinner.
I truly recommend this place.

We have just had tapas and they are great. Food was lovely, we had sardines, potato's with ibérico and eggs, croquetes, burger with goat cheese.
As soon as we got in, who we belive was the owner wearing different clothes from the rest of the staff, didn't treat us well, said the restaurant was busy inside and we would have to go outside. We were with our 6 year old in a very hot weather, although we understand it was a busy period, we would have expected a better, more kindness from the owner to perhaps say "if you wait 5 minutes I can get you a table", we decide to go outside anyway and we were served by Juan who was lovely, if you go there ask for him. He was extremely helpful and gave us some really good option to eat, he also help us get a table inside as soon as he possibly could, which took us 8 minutes waiting on the table outside.
Staff is lovely, owner might be better off staying home.

We enjoyed our tapas supper very much. The calamari was tender and tasty. The mini fritura de pescados had a mixture of squid, white bait and sardine fritters, delicious! It was a Wednesday night and the place was nearly full, but it was calm and enjoyable; mostly locals eating in there, we noticed. The staff were friendly too. The lamb chops were tasty but only small cutlets. They only have one dessert, chocolate and cheese tart with chocolate sauce(similar to cheesecake); it's sweet salty, might not be everyone's taste. Plus, if you've had too much to eat, this could be too filling for one person. I'd say, try one to share between 3 people should you need to have a pudding.

Wonderful place! Ended up here after reading the reviews & they were super accurate! Got a little corner table on the street, waiter was so busy but was doing a fantastic job. We asked him to help us select tapas and every bite was fantastic, really enjoyed the tomato salad with fish & the meat w peppers the most. Would come back if ever in the area. We got maybe 4-5 tapas and 6 glasses of tinto de verano for 35 euros.

Since we are staying in the heart of the old town we walked to this Taberna based on recommendations from our host. The restaurant is fine. However, even though they provide a QR code to the menu and there is a translation available the translation does not work. The English translation still shows Spanish text. So you are left wondering what you are ordering. Overall is was fine but it’s difficult ordering dinner when you cannot understand the menu.
UPDATE: we visited again on 31 AUGUST 2023 — the lady waitress, Baleria, is an asset to the restaurant. Her English is fine and she helped us a lot. We would have battled to understand the menu had it not been for her assistance. She was rewarded with a handsome tip accordingly. Make sure to cost this restaurant when in Almeria, if only for the atmosphere alongside the road and the helpful waitress, Baleria.

Has now gone completely downhill after getting worse the last few years on what was once one of the best AND best value places to eat in Almeria. Twice asked for a caña and got given a 45cl large glass, could not be bothered to argue. Tapas aren't really free as cost for tiny tapas is built in to expensive drinks. Tapas list now tiny compared to what it once was. worst torreznos i've ever had and a tiny amount for €8.40. Such a shame. 10 years ago this place was amazing, now not worth the journey to a pretty crappy part of town.

Perfect, just perfect. And wine selection is almost best in whole Almeria

What a lovely place, food and staff. The octopus and artichokes we had were heaven. The staff was friendly and gave us a table despite not having a booking. Booking on a weekend is a must though. The location is slightly away from the main area but worth visiting.

Great food, very nice atmosphere and best cheese cake I ever eat. The meat was cooked on metal plate and was delicious. Attached is a tomato we brought with us and prepared for us at restaurant.
Tasty wine.

If you’re looking for a no frills spot with nice food and friendly staff come here. The Tapas are delicious and very reasonably priced. I recommend the Carne con tomate, Costilla con ajos (ribs in garlic sauce) and Cazón. The waiter Samuel is super friendly and helpful when choosing food and Alba the Chef whips up these yummy treats in minutes. Highly recommend.

Incredible! The place, the food, and the service were amazing!! Sergio was super friendly as always, first asking if we had any food intolerances so he could recommend dishes according to our preferences. The special creations are DELICIOUS, and Ale was lovely and super attentive the whole time, making sure we had everything we needed 🙂 Special mention for the crunchy potato salad and the pig's ear taco as tapas, and the potatoes with eggs, ham, and truffle as a main course (not to mention the prices are fantastic). Definitely a place to return to!

I loved it! Everything I tried was delicious. Of everything I tasted, I'd especially recommend the sweet potato with mint, the mango curry chicken, and the fried chicken. And the crunchy potato salad—a salad for those of us who don't usually like potato salad! The service was very friendly and the atmosphere was welcoming. I highly recommend it. And it's gluten-free! 🙂

A fantastic experience!! The owners are amazing and the place is lovely. The food was delicious, a 10 out of 10 without a doubt!! Plus, all the dishes are homemade, and today, even though it was raining, they served me an exquisite plate of migas... wow! A truly wonderful experience. Highly recommended!

Great place, been here twice. Amazing meats! Tried Iberian pork (has really really nice grill taste) and beef sirloin steak. Also really loved the salt flakes mix. It goes so well with the meats.

Absolutely perfect! Ordered the large potion beef ribs "Americano" - the best I've ever tasted! My wife ordered one of the Iberico ham dinners -also excellent! The vegetables were delicious, the bread fresh, and the house wine (Vilano Roble) delightful.

A Must-Visit Gem in Almería!
I had the pleasure of dining at La Consentida last night and was thoroughly impressed. The food was nothing short of delicious—each tapa was beautifully presented and full of flavour. Special mention goes to the pork skewer, perfectly grilled and deeply satisfying, and the roasted baked potatoes, which were seasoned to perfection.
The atmosphere was just as delightful as the cuisine. The restaurant itself is stunning, and the terrace is thoughtfully designed, making it an ideal spot for a relaxed evening. Service was excellent—efficient, friendly, and always attentive without being overbearing.
And the desserts? Do not, under any circumstances, skip them. The tiramisu wasn’t just dessert—it was a criminally good experience. Honestly, it should come with a warning label.
Tips for Dining Out in Almería
To truly enjoy the gastronomy of Almería, it helps to understand the local etiquette and dining rhythms. While the city is welcoming and casual, knowing a few insider secrets can elevate your experience from a standard meal to a memorable cultural immersion. Here are some essential tips to help you navigate the tables and bars of this Andalusian capital like a seasoned local.
1. Embrace the Free Tapa Culture
While the trend is slowly changing in the city center, many traditional bars still serve a complimentary tapa with every beer, wine, or vermouth ordered. To maximize this, don’t order your entire meal at once. Order a drink, receive your free tapa, and then decide if you want to order a "ración" (full plate) afterward. This is the authentic way to sample multiple flavors without overspending.
2. Look for the "Jornada Continua" for Early Dinners
If you are traveling with children or simply cannot wait until 9:00 PM to eat dinner, look for restaurants that advertise "jornada continua" or "cocina abierta todo el día." These establishments keep the kitchen open through the afternoon and early evening, bridging the gap between Spanish lunch and dinner hours, allowing you to eat at a time that suits your schedule.
3. Order the Seasonal Seafood
Almería’s fish markets operate daily, and the menus should reflect the changing seasons. While red prawns and langoustines are famous, do not overlook local catches like jurel (horse mackerel) or boquerones (anchovies). Ask your server, "¿Qué hay de pescado fresco hoy?" (What fresh fish is there today?) and trust their recommendation, usually prepared simply grilled or fried.
4. Venture Beyond the Paseo de Almería
While the main promenade and the area around the Cathedral are beautiful, prices here are often higher, and the quality can be inconsistent. To find the city’s true culinary soul, walk a few blocks into the working-class neighborhoods like the Barrio de Pescadería or the streets behind the Mercado Central. You will find family-run bars serving generations-old recipes at much fairer prices.
5. Share Plates and Eat Family-Style
Spanish dining is inherently social. While tasting menus are an exception, most traditional restaurants serve dishes meant to be placed in the center of the table and shared. Do not feel obligated to order an individual main course per person. Instead, order two or three "medias raciones" (half plates) or several starters to share. This allows you to try a wider variety of the menu and is the preferred way locals eat.
Exploring the restaurants of Almería is about more than just satisfying hunger; it is an exploration of the city’s history and coastal identity. From the salt spray on fresh oysters to the smoky char of grilled octopus, the flavors here are a testament to the Mediterranean way of life. The unpretentious nature of the service and the emphasis on raw ingredients make it a refreshing destination for food lovers.
As you wander through the plazas and side streets, let your senses guide you. The sight of cured hams hanging behind a bar, the sound of sizzling garlic prawns, and the aroma of freshly baked bread are all invitations to sit down and stay awhile. In Almería, the table is a place of connection, and every meal is an opportunity to slow down and savor the moment.
