Nestled along the Alsace Wine Route, Colmar looks like it has been lifted directly from the pages of a fairytale. With its pastel half-timbered houses, winding cobblestone lanes, and gentle canals, it is a city that invites slow exploration. Yet, even in this storybook setting, every traveler eventually needs a moment to pause, warm up, and refuel.
Coffee culture in Colmar has evolved beautifully, blending traditional French café rituals with the modern specialty coffee movement. You are just as likely to find a historic salon de thé serving delicate pastries as you are a minimalist space pouring single-origin flat whites. It is a city where the quality of the brew often matches the beauty of the surroundings.
Whether you are starting your morning before tackling the Musée Unterlinden or seeking an afternoon escape from the crowds in Little Venice, the right café can elevate your visit. From hidden courtyards to bustling squares, Colmar offers a diverse range of atmospheres to suit solo travelers, couples, and families alike.
Navigating the options can be overwhelming, especially when you are trying to avoid tourist traps and find the spots locals actually love. You want a place with genuine charm, excellent beans, and perhaps a slice of authentic Alsatian kugelhopf to accompany your espresso.
That is why we have curated this definitive guide to the best coffee experiences in the city. We have walked the streets, tasted the roasts, and judged the ambiance to ensure you spend less time searching and more time savoring.
Below, you will find a carefully selected list of establishments that represent the pinnacle of Colmar’s café scene. Each entry offers something unique, from artisanal roasting methods to unparalleled views of the historic architecture.

Best place to taste a real authentic sweet pies, their lemon tart is so tasty and the four berries fruit as well so fresh and amazing. The service is so good, cafe au lait as well was so nice and the place vibes are so fine for those who love to stay in an old decorative place. Highly recommended while roaming around Colmar beautiful streets.

Cute little cafe!
Very limited food options, BUT IT TASTED REALLY GOOD, especially the Pain au Chocolat, I really enjoyed it so much! Croissant was great too.
Homemade hot chocolate is better than the normal hot chocolate (was wondering what’s the different so we ordered to compare it, homemade one have fragrance of milk/cream 😋

First of all, if you are reading this and trying to understand if the croissants are worth a visit or not...I tell you: NO.
The croissant was the most average and least special croissant I have had in France. Even my hotel served better croissants.
Soft, doughy and not crispy on the outside.
It was simply not good. Tasted like a supermarket croissant.
I was a victim of Chatgpt who told me this place is famous for its croissants.
And more over, when you hear "French people are rude", that image is the spitting image of the female owner of this place.
She was very rude from the moment she looked at us.
We asked for 1 croissant in English.
She said Ferme!!! Which we learned by now that means "Closed".
Another worker (apparently the nice personality hire) who was more cultured understood us and told the owner we only wanted a croissant and not to sit so we were allowed to have one croissant😂.
Croissant was 2€. Too much for what it is.
Also came with an extra flavour of our first rude French experience😂.

Everything was good, but they didn't bring us the second eclair, although they did add it to the bill later.

If you want to stop for a coffee and experience something completely different, make sure to go in. They don’t have a professional coffee machine; it’s a traditional setup. The interior feels like it’s straight out of a movie, and the atmosphere is quite surprising. However, if you don’t have patience, this place might not be for you. But I recommend it to anyone who enjoys observing and experiencing something new while sightseeing. The staff is quite elderly, which adds to the unique atmosphere. I stopped there with a friend for coffee. The coffee was good, and we had traditional macarons, which were tasty. Of course, I didn’t get the one I ordered, but that just added to the whole interesting visit. I highly recommend it, but again, if you’re not patient, don’t go in, as I saw some people leave. Go if you’re curious about the experience and want to take a break from sightseeing.

Excellent cafe with lovely service and a wonderful, comfy ambiance. We enjoyed our drinks (dirty chai latte, espresso martini, cremant rosé, riesling), chatting, and reading in this warm space. Merci!
Update: we returned 2 days later for a tasty brunch. It was a Sunday and many other places were full or closed. There was a short line waiting to get in, but the friendly host assured us they would soon have room. 5 minutes later we had a cosy table. Despite the busy hour, the staff was always friendly and felt unstressed. Great experience, again! Kudos.

The restaurant is spacious with plenty of seating, and one of the best things about it is the large indoor air-conditioned dining area, which is perfect on hot days. The menu offers a wide variety of dishes, all of which look delicious, so there’s something for everyone. They also provide free Wi-Fi, making it a comfortable place to relax and enjoy a meal.

Very nice restaurant with friendly staff. I had never been to a restaurant that serves only brunch before, so I learned something new as well haha. We ordered Porc Shawarma and Burger poulet au za’atar since it was already lunchtime, and those seemed like the only options that could replace a meal we would normally eat for lunch. The food is tasty, but a bit more seasoned than I expected and I didn’t like the sauce very much. Everything else was nicely and well prepared. The price–quality ratio is okay. All the best. 🙃

Friendly and great shakshuka. Great prices.... The shakshuka brought me back to a time I was in Barcelona ,I went to a corgi cafe and had an unfortunate experience where the corgi mauled me. He bit my face, I was bleeding profusely. It was because I had an empanada in my bag he wanted. Other that the corgi mauling, I give that cafe in Barcelona 5 stars and would go back..
Anyways, I am delirious from the Willy bus, but the shakshuka here is great and I recommend you dine in. 🥚

We ordered shaksuka and salmon pancake. Shaksuka was delicious. We preferred the spicy one and it was so good. I ordered salmon pancake and it looked and tasted so nice. If I go there again I will again order it. We waited like 25 minutes to get in. There there is a line usually. Ice tea was not that good. I want order it again. The place is small. You sit close to people. Overall it was nice and worth the hype.

Very cozy and welcoming place. The barista is kind, attentive, and clearly knows what he’s doing. Coffees are flavorful and well-balanced, definitely above average. And make sure to try the carrot cake — it’s moist, fresh, and surprisingly good. Perfect spot for a quiet break.

Very cute breakfast spot off the beaten path and away from crowds. Lots of outside seating and comfortable seating inside. You order electronically at the counter. We had iced lattes, yogurt bowl, hummus bread, and a cinnamon roll (not pictured). The yogurt bowl was huge! The hummus bread was a large portions as well- both were very good! The cinnamon roll was not great, would not recommend this but overall would definitely recommend coming here for breakfast!

A solid cafe right near to Mokxa Coffee (and they serve their coffee, I believe) that offered a decent breakfast option for American tourists as there were actually food items with protein!! I got like a yogurt and fruit bowl with a drink for about 14 euros, and there was avocado toast or eggs and such. Simple menu with about 5 options, with coffee drinks, though you could also walk next door and get the coffee. This was a great place to stop in if growing tired of morning bakery pastries!

Absolutely loved this coffee shop and the employees were so nice! They did speak English too which was helpful. Bought cute tote bags to bring home too. Highly recommend!

"Speciality Coffee" is something else! Long wait, very disappointing food and drinks.
Ordered flat white, received the drink on the picture, judge for yourself.
The table had not been wiped down from the previous guests at any point during our visit. Their plates and glasses were only cleared when staff arrived to deliver our own order. Said this multiple times to the staff while ordering, to no effect.
Ordering is done via a touchscreen, where you also pay upfront, which makes any kind of customisation a challenge.
We had to wait more than 20 minutes for flat whites looking nothing like flat whites: the drink was too hot and the milk poorly frothed. The babychino came with cacao despite us clearly ordering without, promptly fixed though.
The avocado toast arrived without a paid add on (egg). We pointed it out and were told it was "coming soon." It never came. We finished eating and drinking, and when I went to ask for a receipt — a hard-boiled egg was given instead of the receipt (3 more minutes of waiting). By that point we had already gotten up and our table had been taken by other customers. As compensation, they offered a carrot cake to go, which was genuinely delicious and a fair gesture.
That said, the avocado toast itself was just ok.
The carrot cake saves a star. The staff is friendly.
TL;DR: Dirty table never wiped, for a specialty coffee, the flat whites were a mess, and an egg add-on simply never arrived. After we finished and got up, they offered a carrot cake to go as compensation: which was lovely. The carrot cake alone keeps it from a 1-star. If you want a good coffee thats the wrong place.

We were searching for cafes in Colmar, as most are closed for the holiday season. We stumbled upon this cafe, and the Americano and café latte were decent despite its appearance.
The indoor seating is full likely due to the winter and everyone is freezing outdoor. They do offer outdoor seating.
Their specialty coffee seems to be a mixture of alcohol and coffee based on the menu, which might be worth trying next time.

The food and coffee is also magnificent. I would highly recommend to anyone traveling though and is looking for a cafe to sit.

Beautiful cafe, visited 3 times while I was staying in France near colmar. The coffee is great one of the best I’ve tasted and the food was also delicious. The atmosphere and the vibe around the place is very calming and super welcoming you felt safe and at home. Also a perfect place to go if you have a dog with you since the owners were very nice to our dog (even if ur dog is a bit grumpy) and our dog felt so safe that she immediately fell asleep. I definitely recommend going here if you’re in colmar or near colmar it’s very refreshing and relaxing. Also loved the references all around the cafe. I recommended getting one of the Bagels and the white mocha coffee and the orange muffin as a sweet treat.

Went multiple times during our short stay in Colmar! A very cozy, whimsical cafe. It also has a library in the back where you can rent out books, and a gorgeous area to read and hang out in. Beautifully and thoughtfully decorated.
The owners were so lovely and friendly, truly beautiful people! They really make you feel welcomed.
My husband got an iced American and I got a matcha strawberry latte with oat milk (they have oat, almond, and coconut milk substitutions) and they were delicious. The only place in Alsace that gives you a good amount of ice during hot days, haha.
The matcha was super smooth and creamy, and the strawberry was lightly sweet and tart.
Washrooms were nice, with actual hand towels. Temperature is nice and cool during this heat wave.
I would recommend this place to anyone visiting!

Mokka Café in Colmar is a cozy little gem that’s perfect for a slow, indulgent breakfast or a relaxed afternoon break. Tucked in a charming corner of the town, the café combines modern aesthetics with a warm, inviting vibe—exactly the kind of place you want to stumble upon while exploring the picturesque streets of Colmar.
I ordered a bowl (açaí-style), a croissant, a coffee, and a slice of pistachio cake, and each item had its own standout character.
The bowl was fresh, vibrant, and beautifully presented. It had the perfect balance of fruits, granola, and yogurt—light but satisfying, and full of natural sweetness. It felt refreshing and wholesome, making it a great choice for a healthy start to the day.
The croissant was wonderfully flaky and buttery, with just the right crispness on the outside and a soft, delicate interior. It tasted fresh out of the oven and easily rivals some of the best I’ve had in France.
The coffee was smooth, rich, and served with care. It wasn’t overly bitter or acidic, just a well-balanced cup that paired perfectly with both the croissant and dessert.
Now, the real highlight for me was the pistachio cake. It was soft, moist, and not overly sweet, with a deep pistachio flavor that tasted authentic and nutty—not the artificial kind. The texture was spot-on, and it was the kind of dessert you keep thinking about long after you’ve left.
Overall, Mokka Café offers high-quality food in a beautifully curated space. Whether you’re grabbing a quick bite or sitting down for a slow brunch, it hits the mark. I’d definitely return—especially for that pistachio cake.

The bubble tea is awful 😞 The "tea" (I got passion fruit) is just a bit syrup mixed with what ? Water ? Industrial ice tea ? All I know is that the drink is bitter, tasteless and lukewarm, cause served with no ice at all 🤯 The litchi bubbles are just as tasteless. With this hot weather, I wanted a nice refreshing drink. Ended up with a nasty, industrial tasting almost warm beverage. For 5,50€ that's just a shame.

We we visited Colmar, France in 2019 and found this lovely cafe along the canal. Plenty of seating available inside but it was a beautiful day so we choose the outdoor patio on the water. What a desire to see Swans, boats and gondolas go by as we ate a wonderful breakfast. Service was impeccable and there was no rush to get us out so of course we took our time

I have travelled the world extensively over 40 years. I ate at all restaurants ranging from pop & mom’s to Michelin three stars. This is my honest review of the café 1924 in Colmar suburb, France.
We stopped at this café located inside a shopping mall, conveniently close to a Tesla Supercharger, making it a practical place to take a break while waiting for the car to charge.
The café is clearly specialized in coffee-based drinks, with an extensive menu offering a wide range of options. The two coffee specialties we ordered were very good, well prepared and enjoyable. The freshly squeezed orange juice was also a nice and refreshing addition.
Service, however, was a bit slow and rather impersonal, which slightly affected the overall experience. Seating is fairly compact, with tables close to one another — perfectly fine for a quick drink, but less ideal if you are looking to stay longer or enjoy a more private setting.
Overall, a solid option for a short coffee break while shopping or charging your car, especially if you appreciate a good selection of coffee drinks.

Visited around 3pm on a Thursday and very much enjoyed the generous portion of café Viennois and a raspberry croissant on the terrace (just look at those layers!). It wasn't busy, the terrace was empty and I didn't wait long for my coffee. Nice spot for people-watching.
David Mak★★★★☆
This is a reasonable place to have morning tea. The €6.50 breakfast comes with your choice of coffee or tea, bottled orange juice and your choice of pastry while the €8.50 breakfast comes with an extra serving of bread, butter and jam. The orange juice however is freshly squeezed for the latter set. The cappuccino is alright but I think the cafe latte is better. They do have an exotic choice of coffee beans so do enquire. Pastry is on the cold side so if you’re after good pastry, probably the bakery next door.
Tip: The cafe shares the same compound with the bar next to it. Do note the different furnitures (bar tables chairs vs cafe tables and chairs). Pick your seat and the waitress will come to you. The tall lady seem very nice too.

First it looked like a shop for coffee beans or similar. We wanted a good breakfast around 8 am and went here based on Google maps info that breakfast is available. Spoke with the young lady in the shop and she said of course we can have breakfast. We then ordered and she made it all ready and brought it outside. It tasted wonderful and was very lovely. I had hot chocolate and it was a dream. No long-life milk with white flocks or milk powder. Together with a Croissant, exquisite!

What a perfect spot to get out of the scorching sun and enjoy a lovely, Alsatian lunch! We both had Rösti (I had Alsatian, served with ham and he had Normandy, served with smoked trout and a poached egg), both were served with a salad and were delish. Lovely coffees and dessert served with a smile so this place is easy to recommend .

Perfect place for breakfast! They had several breakfast meal options and quiches and tarts. I got one with a baguette, coffee, juice, and croissant. I thought it was good value for the money. We also got pancakes with honey and they were so good. I would definitely come back and recommend!!

Visited recently. Nice little place, but the food received was not what was described ("potatoes", but received 3 small spoonfuls of mashed potatoes). As clearly seen in one of the photos below, the portions, were perhaps more of an appetizer size than lunch. (For reference, the plate with shedded pork shown in the photo was 16€). A small dessert was included, which our selection was a small glass containing a round of cake with what seemed blueberries with sauce.
The food took a lengthy time to come out even though there were only 2 other tables being served lunch. The rest of the tables were only having "Kaffee und Kuchen".
We did found the coffee menu very small. Many teas available.
---Edit to clarify manager's response---
The menu was in French, but as it has already stated in the review, the lady up front said the dish came with "potatoes", and not "mashed potatoes".
-- As previously stated, at the time we were there, only two other tables were eating lunch.
--We made no reference to tea, only to coffee menu.

The young nice lady who served me was absolutely sweet and friendly. The poached eggs with salmon exceeded my expectations. And coffee here was the best I've drunk within my 3 days of stay in Alsace Region. Wish you much nspiration and many happy customers! High quality of food, drinks and service is something that you already have 🤗
Cheers from Berlin!

Stopped in for brunch and absolutely loved it. I had the muffin with salmon and a poached egg — it was delicious. The accompanying salad was surprisingly tasty, especially the dressing. The coffee (I had a cappuccino) was amazing: creamy, nutty, and smooth. The food was beautifully presented, with nice tableware, and the place itself is cozy and modern without being crowded. Fast, friendly service. Really enjoyed it!

Cozy café in Colmar, with very kind staff, a bit away from the historic center, but totally worth a try. I had an amazing coffee and a big slice of cake, with lower prices than elsewhere in the city. Highly recommended!

This cafe is very close to the centre of Colmar and has a lovely atmosphere. The staff was very friendly on both occasions (and multilingual) and the coffee itself was delicious. Excellent brunch menu, we recommend the syrup pancakes!

We loved our visit to this nice coffee place. We ordered the best selling items which were the hot dog and the sweet-potato pancakes. We then concluded our stay with the pink and golden lattes which were pleasant in taste. The place was crowded and we had to wait a bit for our food, and to be seated.
Tips for Enjoying Cafés in Colmar
Understanding the local rhythm and etiquette can significantly enhance your coffee experience in this Alsatian gem. While Colmar is incredibly welcoming, knowing a few insider details about timing, service, and local customs will help you blend in and secure the best seats in the house. Here is how to make the most of your café hopping in Colmar.
1. Know the difference between a Salon de Thé and a Café
In France, the distinction matters. A traditional café focuses primarily on coffee, alcohol, and light snacks, often with quicker table turnover. A salon de thé is closer to a tearoom, offering a wider selection of pastries, cakes, and loose-leaf teas, encouraging you to linger longer. Choose the type of venue based on whether you want a quick espresso at the bar or a leisurely afternoon treat.
2. Embrace the slower pace of service
Colmar operates on Alsatian time, which means service is attentive but never rushed. Unlike in some major metropolises, waitstaff will not bring the bill until you explicitly ask for it. Do not mistake this for neglect; it is a sign of respect for your space. Relax, catch up on your journal, and simply flag down your server when you are ready to leave.
3. Watch out for seasonal closures and Sunday hours
Colmar is a major tourist destination, but it is also a functioning local town. Many independent, family-run cafés close for one or two days a week, often Sunday afternoon or Monday. Additionally, some smaller establishments shut down for annual holidays in January or February. Always check recent online reviews or call ahead if you have your heart set on a specific spot.
4. Decide between the terrace and the interior
The ambiance of a café changes drastically depending on where you sit. Terraces offer incredible people-watching and views of the canals, but they often come with a premium price or require you to order food. Sitting inside often grants you access to stunning historic interiors, beamed ceilings, and a cozier atmosphere. If the weather is chilly, ask for a spot near the window to enjoy the view without the cold.
5. Pair your coffee with a local specialty
Skip the generic croissant and look for regional Alsatian treats. Ask if they have a Kugelhopf (a brioche-like cake with raisins and almonds) or a slice of Tarte aux Myrtilles (blueberry tart). Many local roasters and cafés take pride in sourcing pastries from nearby artisan bakers, making the pairing a crucial part of the experience.
6. Tap water is free, but you must ask
In France, it is standard to request a "carafe d’eau" (pitcher of tap water) alongside your coffee. It is perfectly polite and will save you money on bottled water. Simply say "Une carafe d’eau, s’il vous plaît," and the server will bring it to your table.
As you wander back out onto the cobblestones, a warm cup in your hand or a satisfied feeling in your stomach, you will understand why Colmar captivates so many. The city’s charm is not just in its architecture but in these quiet moments of pause, where the steam from a fresh espresso mingles with the crisp Alsatian air.
Whether you chose a bustling brasserie in the old town or a quiet hideaway near the covered markets, you have experienced a slice of local life that guidebooks often miss. Take your time, soak in the atmosphere, and let the magic of Colmar linger long after the last drop is gone.
