15 Best Bakeries in Saint-Malo

Saint-Malo is a city of granite, sea spray, and deep maritime pride. For visitors, the fortified corsair city is famous for its ramparts, tidal extremes, and the nearby beaches of the Émeraude Coast. For locals, however, the rhythm of daily life is often measured in flour dust, butter, and the first crack of a crisp baguette.

While savory crêpes and fresh oysters dominate the culinary conversation, the bakery scene in Saint-Malo is an essential part of the local identity. From traditional Breton specialties to refined French pâtisserie, the city’s ovens produce some of the finest baked goods in Brittany. Knowing where to find the best croissant or kouign-amann can elevate a simple breakfast into a memorable travel experience.

Brittany is historically known for its use of salted butter, and this regional distinction transforms even the most basic pastry. The caramelized, buttery layers of a true kouign-amann or the dense crumb of a traditional far breton require skill, patience, and high-quality ingredients. In Saint-Malo, many bakers still honor these traditions while adding contemporary flair.

Because the city is compact and highly walkable, it is easy to plan a self-guided tasting tour. Whether you are staying within the Intra-Muros walls or venturing out to the Paramé or Saint-Servan districts, a world-class bakery is rarely more than a short stroll away. The challenge is not finding a bakery; it is choosing which one deserves your limited appetite.

To compile this guide, we considered consistency, ingredient quality, mastery of regional classics, and the overall customer experience. These are not simply tourist stops; they are establishments that locals trust for their daily bread and weekend treats. Each one offers something distinct, from organic sourdough to award-winning viennoiserie.

Below is a curated list of the best bakeries in Saint-Malo. Whether you are looking for a quick pastry before exploring the ramparts or a beautiful cake to celebrate a special occasion, these addresses represent the pinnacle of local baking.

This boulangerie deserves every bit of its incredible 4.9-star rating—it truly offers out-of-this-world pastries and is a must-visit in Saint-Malo. This was my second visit, and I consistently find the desserts to be culinary masterpieces; the coffee is also excellent. The ambiance is lovely, and the service is generally wonderful and thoughtful. We ordered a large haul today—desserts to go, items to eat there, coffee, and granola to take away. I especially appreciated that the staff offered to keep my delicate dessert box refrigerated until I was ready to leave. Furthermore, as a tourist (and for families visiting), the dedication to being baby-friendly stands out. The baby changing table in the bathroom is a huge, necessary plus that other establishments often overlook. It makes this place a top-tier choice for tourists with small children. However, my final interaction left me with a bad taste, which is disappointing after such a wonderful visit. As I was leaving, I went to the cashier to collect my items. I had a box, the granola, and a separate bag of croissants, and I simply needed a paper bag to consolidate everything for the walk back to the hotel. I was told the paper bag costs 20 cents. Since there was a long line behind me and I only had my credit card out, I told the cashier to forget about it rather than hold up the queue for a 20-cent charge. After spending a significant amount of money and having such a high-quality experience up to that point, the reluctance to provide a simple paper bag was jarring. It's a minor policy detail that feels inconsistent with the otherwise generous and thoughtful service (like refrigerating my dessert). Verdict: The best boulangerie for quality and atmosphere in Saint-Malo. The products are delicious, and I highly recommend it. I hope the management reviews its policy and provides an updated customer service training—can be the one tiny detail that leaves an otherwise thrilled customer feeling nickel-and-dimed on the way out the door.

The pastries are very delicate and well balanced! The service is incredible! The sandwiches are so fresh!!!! MUST GO fellow Americans

Well well well, what can I say. This Boulangerie isn’t a normal Boulangerie. I think they are just blessed by god. Like god gave them talent and they transformed it in magic. Everything, and I weight my words, everything is awesome. Good is not a stronger word to say my thoughts its just marvelous. First of all the place. The furniture are so Cosy and so well chosen that you have to spend at least one breakfast there. Reminding me the Scandinavian style with a touch of Montessori kiddergarden, the place feel like home. But ok let’s pass the place and concentrate in the food. Bakery, all type of awesome bread, croissant and pain aux chocolate and of course a lot of revisited traditional danish. Guys its like being transported at each bit. Oh god, it’s so good. Pastry then, well, again, it’s simple and tasty it’s Exotic, it’s all here. From a traditional lemon tart to a Paris Brest revisited with pistachio and raspberry… I’m in love. Finally the lunch/ salad take away…. Even that is revolting. A mix of flavor and taste, consistency and originality. 3 days in a row and I know that I won’t have time to try everything. Life is just simpler when you have a shop like that near you. Using the best product and doing what we love with care can only result with perfection. Thank you for it Maison Malecot

So glad we came across Madison Malècot during our visit to St Malo! The displays of breads, pastries, desserts are mouthwatering. Clearly a go-to spot for the locals/French holiday-goers too - the line went out the door by around 10 AM on a Saturday morning. The staff/service were very kind. Recommend asking for the “formule” which was, for €15 per person, a hot drink, a glass of delicious fresh pressed local apple juice, 2 large slices of fresh bread with jam and butter, and your choice from among several incredible pastries (Kouign Amman (sp?), brioche a la canelle, etc). Going back again tomorrow!

Delicious pastries with large selection. We tried four different pastries over our couple days in town. All were substantial and very well made with fair prices. The coffee was also tasty, and service was friendly. Highly recommend!

We visited Boulangerie Pâtisserie de la Cathédrale in Saint-Malo and overall had a good experience. We tried some of the traditional pastries, and they were delicious. A few of them had that nice homemade feeling, with good quality ingredients and a simple, traditional taste. At first, the staff seemed to look at us a little suspiciously, but that was only our first impression. In the end, they were friendly and the service was fine. Overall, it is a good bakery and a nice place to try traditional pastries while visiting Saint-Malo.
Tamara★★★★★
Excellent little bakery! Great place to grab breakfast and sit outside in their tables to enjoy it. Their goat cheese a tomato quiche was the highlight. The veggie quiche was completely flavorless. Their croissant is just ok. And their rustic breads are pretty good and they will slice them for you! So this is the perfect place to get your picnic bread. I also appreciate that it opens when other places do not, the service is friendly, and their baked goods are overall fresh and tasty.

This is not the place to have a sweet tooth! Everything we bought was amazing

I came here to buy some pastries for breakfast. The variety of pastries and food was not only amazing, but the smell when you walk in, I could have bought the whole shop! The service and food is amazing! Highly recommend and would return.

IMO, the best bakery inside St-Malo walls. They're closed from June 29 through the first week of July for their summer holiday. Great selection of sweets treats in addition to traditional breads and baguettes. FYI, this bakery, like many others, uses a capsule coffee machine, not a traditional espresso machine.

First time in Saint-Malo with my family and we wanted to have a quick bite for breakfast before visiting the old town. It is one of the first shops that emerges in our sight once entering through the main gateway of Saint-Vincent. We tried a lovely "Far breton" (kind of custard with vanilla, prunes)... Just delicious! An upstairs room allows visitors to dine-in and use the toilets (found clean).
Bishoy Louis★★★★☆
Quite good for a quick bite, with really good value for money. In a central location in the old town. Only down is that they don’t have wifi. Otherwise, an okay place to work for a couple of hours if needed. Also a good option for a snack during your city walk.
Henry Claude Nana Monnier (Henry)★★★★★
Crêpes with Bordier butter and cane sugar. Oh my! They have a bunch of other stuff that looks super good too. And they are super cheap too. The summer staff was also super duper nice. We had lots of laughs together. Yeah, when you go there 4 times in 2 days they start recognizing you 🤭
Chris Britton★★★★★
We (family of four, with two young children) both lunch and a crepe here. Lunch was lovely, our youngest had a croissant (her favourite food!) and we all had a wrap, roll and hot ciabatta. The food was all lovely, my wife and I had a coffee and these were excellent as well. While it is not cheap, it was certainly worth the money - and the staff were brilliant and friendly.
Caroline Blair★★★★★
Our stop for coffee and croissants after getting off the ferry. Welcoming, great tasting coffee, light as air pastries. Lovely seating area upstairs with some friendly little sparrows looking for some crumbs. Parking nearby. Super clean customer toilets

Completely renovated bakery. Functional layout with a bright and modern decor. Everything is delicious, from the seeded baguette to the whole wheat bread. The croissants are excellent. The pastries are original, with individual "trompe l'oeil" cakes. Well done, I highly recommend it.
Manoel Crouzatier-Braet★★★★★
Go without hesitation, this bakery has everything going for it; the trompe-l'œil decorations are magnificent, especially the lemon one. The bread is perfect! Thank you so much.

A must-visit bakery/pastry shop in Saint-Malo!!!! If you're local or just passing through, go! You've won our hearts, us Northerners, and we wish you a long and successful future!!!! We were welcomed with such kindness; you went out of your way to ensure our complete satisfaction, and for that alone, we were deeply touched. A truly lovely shop where French savoir-faire is perfectly showcased: magnificent breads with beautiful baking, stunning puff pastry, refined pastries, and those trompe-l'oeil creations ❤️ were a real treat. A feast for the eyes and the taste buds. A huge Bravo!!! Thank you again for everything.
Sandra Toucheboeuf★★★★★
A superb, newly renovated bakery… and the pastries are simply a delight for the taste buds, both the cakes and the viennoiseries… Special mention for the peanut trompe l'oeil. And a great selection of different breads… Bravo to this young team, and we'll be back even if the bakery isn't in our neighborhood; it's worth the trip… and the quality/price ratio seems unbeatable, especially with these trompe l'oeil cakes that rival those of top Parisian pastry chefs.
Marine Ponaire★★★★★
Excellent bakery and pastry shop. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The pastries are as beautiful as they are delicious. I had breakfast and desserts there at lunchtime, and the whole family loved them. Thank you!

Delicious pastries and the seating area is very cute/well decorated. There is a huge selection of treats to choose from and I thought the prices were reasonable. The boxes that they package the pastries in have pretty floral designs.

We discovered this gem very early on in our holiday, and we ended up coming back here twice more! We made sure to try something different every time, because it all looked so good. The food is absolutely divine, with good vegetarian options available. It’s the perfect combination of bakery and cafe, with a quiet and peaceful seating area behind the main counter. I can’t recommend it highly enough.
Paul Ericsson★★★★★
Incredible find. After getting off the ferry and heading south, we stopped here for coffee and breakfast. This place has the most wonderful croissants and pain au chocolate I’ve had in ages, clearly fresh from the oven. Wonderfully strong coffee too! We didn’t get anything else, but the selection of breads and pastries was very impressive. The queue was a bit long, but it’s clear they’re used to that and we got through fairly quickly. Lots of seating inside as well, and a fully functioning A/C system too! It’s a must after the ferry.
Daniel Banh★★★★★
Busy spot for a morning bakery run, but busy for a reason. Cakes and deserts were splendid, as were the pastries. Would recommend the Saint Honore Caramel
Nigel Houghton★★★★★
Visited for breakfast after arriving on the early morning ferry at Saint Marlo. We stopped Here for breakfast last year and again this year. The food is fresh, a huge choice and the staff are friendly and helpful. The place has great atmosphere and although large is divided up well. We'll be back!

Glad to ignore today's Google rating at this establishment (2.8 stars), and believe the queue of 20 people deep at 7:45am. Over two weeks into a road trip across France, the croissants and bread are some of the finest we have had the pleasure of tasting. We are staying here for 5 nights, and will be along every morning. Formidable!
Trev LaGoon★★☆☆☆
My family and I are regulars here, but I am extremely bothered by the sanitary practice at Robino's. They use the same hands to touch cash (paper bills and coins) and touch your food. This is disgusting. If this is the sanitary standard in the front of the shop, it's not difficult to imagine what lack of sanitary practice goes on in the back of the shop in the kitchen. We want to love Robino's, but this has to change. Simply use a tong to grab the baked goods, or have one hand with gloves that only touches food, and the other hand only touches cash and the cashier screens and keyboard. This is really the standard practice in any modern food establishment.
Ken Octon★★★★☆
Open 6 days a week. Open 7 til 7. Speciality is "wood-fired oven" so the temperature can vary. Day 1 the bread was all very dark and super-crusty. Day 2 it was much lighter and scrunchy - much easier to eat. Also sells a small range of pastries, cakes and viennoiserie.

Still dreaming of the pain au chocolat and the eclair that I bought here, the pain au chocolat ranks up there in the top ones I’ve had in my life, perfectly buttery, chocolatey and with that beautiful honeycomb. Everything else my friends tried was also great. There is street parking on the same street or a small spot in front of the store to stop by for a quick purchase.

During our camper-van road-trip through Bretagne we visited Saint-Malo and decided to buy a piece of far Breton from this pastry shop. What a delicacy! Not overly sweet, perfectly cooked, moist and tender inside, and with dried prunes marinated in rum. We loved this regional dessert, cooked to perfection. In addition the owner was extremely kind, and attentive. Highly recommend!

The Kouign Amann from Saint-Malo was absolutely incredible! Perfectly caramelized on the outside with a rich, buttery, soft interior that melts in your mouth. Sweet but not overpowering, and freshly baked with amazing texture. One of the best pastries we’ve had in France — truly unforgettable and worth trying again!

Amazing ham cheese and egg galette for breakfast - enough for at least two people as it’s very rich. Great Kouign Amann. Fast and friendly service.

I got the traditional with Nutella and it was really good. Its Krispy on the outside and the centre piece is the best.

I tried their Kouign Amann, the traditional one, and it is delicious, very sweet, buttery, chewy, and served warm! It is definitely a must-try. I also enjoyed their Ker-y-pom. It is a small cake made of buttery shortbread dough with apples inside. In addition to the traditional versions, they offer other options with chocolate and other fruits.
Yewen Tan★★★★★
I ate my first Kouign-Aman at this place. Fresh, warm, just out of the oven. It was very good. The staff was efficient. I also had a galette. It was not as good as the Kouign-Aman but it was alright. I think the Kouign-Aman is worth the 2.5 euros, so go and get one or two.

My all time favourite Boulangerie in St. Malo! There is a wide variety of baked goods, which are all very high quality. I personally love their croissants & their Far Breton (a sweet flan with plums inside, which is traditional to Brittany). They also have lots of great sandwich options on some incredibly tasty baguettes & other equally amazing smelling bread options.

I'm picky when it comes to pastries, and this was truly delicious! I chose an assortment of cream puffs, and I was very pleasantly surprised. The ganache was excellent, and the chocolate cream puff was a real success. It's becoming difficult to find good cream puffs and éclairs, because the ganache often lacks flavor when they're frozen. But here, you can really taste the pastry chef's skill, the chocolate flavor is pronounced! The praline was also very good, very smooth. And the texture of the cream puff was perfectly crisp, just the way I like it! We'll be back!

Absolutely loved this place. The coffee was incredibly delicious and perfectly made, and the pan du chocolat.. honestly, beyond words absolutely magnificent. We got here early on a wet day and the quiet atmosphere and warmth was so cosy.. but the highlight- especially as an Aussie- they use FRESH MILK in their coffee!!! Best pastries I've ever had. Well worth the trip. Recommend Chloe and Eliott's to all visitors. Particularly enjoyed the ice cream.

Best macaron of Saint Malo and don't even get me started on delicious ice cream. The owners made this place pretty special. Many thanks to Chloe and Elliott

A magnificent pastry shop! The cakes are excellent, and they have a beautiful selection of chocolates with plenty of choice and delicious macarons. It's a real pleasure to shop at a pastry shop run by an artisan who makes everything from scratch! The welcome and service are also impeccable. I highly recommend it.

This is a belated review, but it had to be done. We've ordered from them several times, and their cakes are excellent, no exaggeration (the same goes for their ice cream). We also ordered cakes for our engagement, and they were very attentive and responsive (especially since we booked at the last minute). Since then, I've never been able to find cakes as good as those from Gatelier, whether in Rennes, Paris, or anywhere else.

Tips for Choosing the Best Bakery in Saint-Malo

Navigating the bakery scene in Saint-Malo is a pleasure, but a few local insights can help you make the most of your visit. The French bakery experience is built on timing, etiquette, and knowing what to look for. Use the following tips to eat like a local and avoid common tourist mistakes.

Go early for the best selection. French bakeries bake in small batches throughout the morning, but the most sought-after viennoiserie, such as pain au chocolat and croissants, often sell out by 10:00 AM. Arriving between 7:30 AM and 9:00 AM guarantees the freshest product and the widest variety.

Look for the “Artisan Boulanger” label. This designation means the bread is kneaded, shaped, and baked on the premises. It is a reliable indicator of quality and authenticity. Avoid places that simply reheat industrial frozen dough.

Prioritize the regional specialties. In Saint-Malo, do not leave without trying a kouign-amann. This dense, caramelized butter cake is a Breton icon. Also look for far breton, a prune-studded custard cake, and palets bretons, thick and crumbly butter cookies.

Buy your bread unsliced. If you are purchasing a traditional sourdough loaf or a baguette tradition, ask for it “non coupée” and tear it by hand. Slicing accelerates staling, and tearing preserves the texture of the crumb and crust.

Check the baking schedule. Many bakeries have specific times when hot baguettes come out of the oven, often around lunchtime and late afternoon. Asking “À quelle heure sort le pain chaud?” will help you time your visit for a warm loaf.

Bring cash for small purchases. While most bakeries now accept credit cards, some smaller artisan shops have a minimum spend for card payments. Carrying a few euros in coins ensures a smooth transaction when buying a single pastry.

Do not overlook the savory options. Many of the best bakeries in Saint-Malo also excel at savory items like quiche lorraine, pizza slices, and filled baguettes. These are excellent, budget-friendly options for a picnic on the beach or a quick lunch between sightseeing stops.

Saint-Malo’s bakery culture is deeply tied to its geography. The salt air, the cool maritime climate, and the region’s famous butter all influence the texture and flavor of the bread. Bakers here understand that they are not just feeding people; they are preserving a cultural heritage that stretches back centuries.

As you explore the city, let your senses guide you. The smell of caramelizing butter wafting from a bakery doorway is one of the most authentic experiences Saint-Malo has to offer. Take your pastry to the ramparts, find a bench overlooking the sea, and enjoy the simple pleasure of eating something made by hand in one of France’s most beautiful coastal cities.
