15 Best Bakeries in Dijon

The scent of warm butter and caramelized sugar drifting from a centuries-old stone storefront is one of the defining sensory experiences of Dijon. While the city is globally celebrated for its mustard, locals know that the true heart of Burgundian gastronomy beats within its boulangeries and pâtisseries. For residents and travelers alike, the quest for the perfect baguette, the flakiest croissant, or the most delicate fruit tart is a daily ritual. This guide serves as your curated roadmap to the finest dough and sugar craftsmanship the capital of Burgundy has to offer.

Navigating the culinary landscape of Dijon requires understanding the distinction between a standard bakery and an artisan establishment. The city is home to numerous "Boulangeries de France" that prioritize frozen, industrial dough for speed and volume. However, the establishments featured here focus on slow fermentation, locally milled flour, and high-grade butter, often sourced directly from Normandy or Charentes. This commitment to raw materials is what elevates a simple pastry into an unforgettable experience.

The architectural backdrop of Dijon enhances the pleasure of visiting these bakeries. Many of the top spots are located along the Rue de la Chouette or near the historic Les Halles market, allowing you to combine your pastry run with sightseeing. Whether you are looking for a quick breakfast before touring the Ducal Palace or a decadent dessert after a wine tasting, knowing where the locals queue is essential. We have evaluated these spaces based on flavor, texture, ingredient sourcing, and the consistency of their ovens.

The local bakery culture in Dijon is fiercely competitive, which benefits the consumer. A shop must master the classic "baguette tradition" to survive, but the best go further by offering regional specialties unique to Burgundy. Look for treats like the "Gougère," a savory choux pastry filled with cheese that pairs perfectly with a glass of local Chardonnay, or the "Nonnette," a small gingerbread cake glazed with honey. These regional icons are often the benchmark for a true artisan’s skill.

For the discerning food tourist, timing is everything. The best bread typically emerges from the ovens between 7:00 AM and 9:00 AM, while the peak selection for intricate pastries is mid-morning. Many of the highest-rated establishments close for several hours in the afternoon or shut down entirely for summer holidays in August. Planning your visit around these windows ensures you receive the product at its peak crispness and flavor, rather than a tired specimen that has been sitting in the display case.

We have walked the cobblestone streets, sampled the crusts, and compared the crumb structures to bring you this definitive list. It is designed to satisfy the purist looking for a perfectly scored sourdough loaf as well as the sweet tooth hunting for a modern éclair. Without further delay, here are the places that define the baking scene in Dijon.

Delicious breads and cakes. The almond croissant in particular was outstanding. Make sure to try this place.

Nothing short of phenomenal! In a city full of top notch bread and pastries, this establishment stands out. Congratulations! A giant croissant for US$1.10 and most pastries under US$3.50 isn’t that bad either 🙂 Take note @TartineSF !!!
Ivy Antunes★★★★★
Came here twice during my trip. The prices are really good and the pastries and baked goods are wonderful. I especially love their gougères and meringues, but I tried a lot of different things and liked all of them. Their Dijonaise mini quiche was also fantastic. Edit: Visited again a couple times in June, still my favorite bakery in town. Pastries are sooo good, great prices, friendly staff.

We came here for a quick boulangerie breakfast before setting back off on our road trip after reading other reviews praising the croissants and pains au chocolat. Those reviews were not wrong! I've been eating French bakery pastries all my life, across the whole of France, and these croissants and pains au chocolat are definitely up there with the very best. 100% recommend.
Ian El-Dana★★★★★
The croissant at this bakery might be the best I've had, and I've had a lot of croissants. This place is definitely worth a stop in Dijon. The almond croissant and pain au chocolate are also excellent.

Most memorable croissant I have had in the last few years. The raspberry croissant 🥐 🤯blew my mind. I will come back to Dijon just for the raspberry croissant. Also enjoyed the nut heavy chocolate chip cookie which was savory and not overly sweet. Perfect balance of flavors and texture. I’m incredibly impressed with this bakery. Nice variety of baked goods, chocolate, sandwiches and pizzas. Staff was nice as well. My kid liked the chocolate on a stick in cute shapes.
Milda Vidžiūnaitė★★★★★
Very delicious and fresh baked goods. We had the vanilla flan, strawberry cake and a chocolate desert and we're very pleasantly surprised.

The tartes, eclairs, macarons, Madeleines, and other sweet treats are absolutely DELISH! One of the BEST patisseries in all of France!
Lara Khoueiry★★★★★
Everything we tried was incredibly delicious, especially the salty items—we couldn’t resist sampling almost all of them. The flavors were fresh, perfectly balanced, and truly unforgettable. The staff was friendly and welcoming, making the experience even more enjoyable. A must-visit spot for anyone passing through Dijon!
Gaia “Food Lover” MAHA★★★★★
Finally a snackfood joint with EXCELLENT quality food. The sandwiches, the pies, the cakes, everything is of superior quality and taste, more than happy to pay those extra 1 or 2 euros to get this satisfying quality !! And if you don't want to spend much, simply try their Cannelle mini cake and enjoy the flavours !! This boutique is a god send for a bruncher like me - I often buy my brunches here and settle down right next door at Comptoir Des Colonies and enjoy the food and order for drinks. A big plus - welcoming and friendly staff - two lovely ladies !! ( a nice change from the rude and judgemental service staff you often come across in most bakeries and fast food joints)

What a find! So happy to find quality pb pastries in France. The guy in the shop was lovely and really helpful. Standout was the brioche- it was next level! Which we’d bought more of it. I’ve never had any pb pastry as good as that

Heavenly! Tried the croissant, pain au chocolat and lemon tart, and the quality was exceptional. The shopkeeper was also very sweet and welcoming. Feel only sorry we discovered it on our way out from Dijon.

This bakery was recommended by our Airbnb host, and I’d like to pay it forward by recommending it too. What a wonderful surprise to end our stay in Dijon. Now I understand why there’s a line outside. The prices are fair for the quality, and their signature baguette alone is worth the trip to this neighborhood. But what stood out was the friendliness of the staff. They were so genuinely kind and welcoming. I wish all of the French were like them!

Miled Nakhel★★★☆☆
Stopped by this boulangerie/pâtisserie for a quick snack. I tried La Figue, which was beautifully presented but overwhelmingly sweet, you get a sugar rush within the first two bites. The strawberry éclairs were also a bit disappointing, as the strawberries tasted frozen. On the other hand, the sandwiches were quite good and tasted fresh. Overall, I’d recommend this place more for its savory options rather than its sweet pastries.
Loo Yeo★★★★☆
Frémont has worked this corner of 23 rue Verrerie since 1998. Patrick Frémont trained at the CFA de Longvic and keeps the ovens in view, a quiet statement of craft. The shop featured in 2017 on M6’s La Meilleure Boulangerie de France and, in 2022, received the first “Savoir-faire 100% Côte-d’Or” plaque for committed local sourcing. Breads run from daily loaves to pain à l’Époisses; pâtisserie fills the glass cases. Our Parcours Breakfast: chocolate éclair, tartelette au cassis and tartelette aux noix with hot chocolate. Tasty, though lighter choux and tart cases would better balance the fillings. A strong 7.5/10.
Alexey Subach★★☆☆☆
The idea is nice - they offer sweet desserts, some pastries and some food as well. However, the implementation was poor - I ordered gratin but the way they warmed it up just made the outside surface of the dish hot, however the potato was still frozen inside. The staff did not speak English and communication was a bit difficult as well

We’ve been travelling across northern France for 2 weeks and this small chain, mostly located near to motorways/out of town, has become our favourite Boulangerie stop. It’s a fab stop for breakfast or lunch if travelling through, especially with kids. Plenty of comfortable air conditioned seating inside. Delicious massive baguette filled sandwiches (c €10 for a menu including a can of drink and clafoutis/vanilla flan style dessert) and pain au chocolat for a reasonable price. The counters of pastries are visually beautiful. Staff are friendly and patient with English speakers. Good parking onsite. If you’re British, think Gail’s but a fraction of the price and much nicer!
Jordy Tournier★★★★★
I stopped by this bakery at lunchtime today and everything was perfect. The welcome was warm and the space for eating in is simply sublime! It's also air-conditioned, with plenty of room to comfortably settle in alone with your laptop to work or with others. In addition, they offer a wide selection of snacks, as well as individual and sharing pastries. Special mention goes to the bacon and mushroom fougasse, which is a real treat! On the sweet side, the peanut tart and the cherry clafoutis are to die for. The products are fresh, delicious, and of superb quality. I highly recommend it and will definitely be back!
Anne G★★★★★
Discovered this new bakery! Fast service and friendly staff. You can sit either outside (small terrace) or inside, in several nicely decorated and air-conditioned rooms! Good products!
Horst★★★★★
An excellent experience! Despite my limited French, I encountered a great deal of patience, friendliness, and helpfulness from the staff. Therefore, five stars for the service. I had very good coffee and baba with rum. Delicious. Therefore, five stars for the food. I sat in the café for about two hours and found it extremely pleasant. I really liked the decor; it suited the type of establishment—clean, well-maintained, tidy, and pleasing to the eye of the guest, who, after all, is never just a consumer but also experiences joy and satisfaction while lingering [or should]. Therefore, five stars for the ambiance. Incidentally, during my two-hour stay, I didn't witness any impatient, brusque, or even rude remarks from the staff. Which brings me back to the service—five stars, as I said.

Every time I come to Dijon, I absolutely have to stop by this bakery. The welcome is fantastic and the service is very quick. They make two vegan brioches (La Dijonnaise (with or without sugar; personally, I get it without sugar because it's sweet enough for me) and La Provençale (the one in the photo, available in two sizes)) which are both delicious and incredibly soft! As for the breads, it's always so hard to choose because they're all so good. Today, I had the Chanoine with walnuts (on Saturdays, the one with seeds). It's a crusty loaf, with the promised flavor (it sounds silly to mention, but I've had seeded breads where you could barely taste the seeds, for example), and it keeps very well (for several days). I highly recommend this bakery; it's one of the best in Dijon!

The sales people are always very friendly here! Always kind and helpful as my French is still very limited. I’ve tried the other bakeries around this area and they have the best baguettes. Nice toasty exterior and wonderfully soft and chewy on the inside. The croissants and pain au chocolat are more bready/less laminated here but still good 👍

Dirty products, no doubt about it. I don't like sugar, I only eat rye bread, I just pop in quickly some mornings to buy quiches, pizzas, or focaccia! Apart from the young, dark-haired saleswoman with long hair... the other two... with very short hair... are frankly unpleasant!!! I don't know why. But it's not good publicity for this shop. Especially since I've lived in a house... 150 meters from this bakery for... 24 years. Being polite, at least a little, is a requirement in a shop; otherwise, you might as well be working in an office! That's normal.

I don't usually leave bad reviews for bakeries, but this... We ordered two trompe-l'œil cakes (pistachio and lemon) which were literally inedible! The filling in one had no taste whatsoever, and in the other, it was downright rancid. €6 for a cake that ended up in the bin.
Ibrahim Zebno★★★★★
Incredible bakery, with a wonderful variety of breads. The pastries are also superb. They make the best baguettes in all of Dijon. With some orders, the bread comes straight from the oven and is still warm—it's unheard of! The staff is also very kind and friendly. I highly recommend this bakery.
Didine didine★☆☆☆☆
I bought several pastries from this bakery. Unfortunately, due to the intense heat, the products weren't kept refrigerated and had an unusual, sour taste. I couldn't eat them. What a shame.
Sheef Woody★★☆☆☆
I was surprised that no bag was offered, even after a purchase of over €30. It's a small detail, but it matters when you leave with several items. It's a shame, because the quality of the pastries deserves service to match.

Tips for Choosing the Best Bakery Experience in Dijon

While the list above provides the exact addresses and names of the highest quality establishments, a little local knowledge can significantly enhance your visit. The rhythm of a French bakery is different from that of a typical American or British café, and understanding the etiquette will make your experience smoother. Here are some essential strategies to ensure you get the best possible product and service during your stay in Burgundy.

Look for the "Artisan Boulanger" Sign
In France, the title "Boulanger" is legally protected. A shop can only call itself a Boulangerie if the bread is kneaded and baked on the premises. If you see a sign that says "Artisan Boulanger," it is a guarantee of this standard. If the sign merely says "Dépôt de Pain," it is a reseller of bread baked elsewhere, and the quality is generally inferior.

Prioritize the Baguette "Tradition"
The standard white baguette often contains additives and preservatives to speed up production. French law strictly defines the "Baguette Tradition" as containing only flour, water, salt, and yeast. By choosing the "Tradition" over the classic baguette, you are statistically guaranteed a better crust, a chewier interior, and a more complex flavor profile.

Do Not Squeeze the Bread
It is a common instinct to test the freshness of a loaf by squeezing it, but in France, this is considered poor manners. The baker has worked hard to create a crusty exterior and a soft interior. Trust the baker to hand you a good loaf, and if you want to ensure freshness, ask for a "baguette bien cuite" (well-baked) if you prefer a crunchier crust.

Ask About the Butter
If you are buying a croissant or pain au chocolat, the quality is entirely dependent on the butter. A high-end bakery will use AOP Charentes-Poitou butter, which has a distinct nutty flavor and a yellow hue. You can ask the vendor, "Est-ce que vos croissants sont au beurre AOP?" If they are, you are in for a treat. If the pastries look pale and dry, they likely used margarine or shortening.

Embrace the Savory Window
Many visitors only think of bakeries for breakfast, but lunch is where the real value lies. Between 11:30 AM and 2:00 PM, the best bakeries pivot to savory items like quiches, pissaladière, and fresh baguette sandwiches. This is the most affordable and authentic way to eat lunch in Dijon, often beating the prices of sit-down brasseries while using the same quality of ingredients.

Bring Cash for Small Purchases
While contactless payment has become widespread in France, many traditional bakeries still enforce a minimum spend for credit cards, often around 5 to 10 euros. If you are just popping in for a single croissant or a baguette, having a few coins or a small bill will make the transaction faster and more appreciated by the staff.
