15 Best Bakeries in Arles

The golden light of Provence does more than illuminate Roman ruins and vibrant café terraces; it also warms the display cases of some of France’s most charming independent bakeries. In Arles, bread is not merely a side dish—it is a cultural institution, a daily ritual that connects residents to the terroir of the Camargue.

While tourists often flock to the city for its art history and the legacy of Van Gogh, locals know that the true soul of the city can be found in the crackle of a fresh baguette or the buttery layers of a mid-morning croissant. Navigating the city’s culinary landscape can be overwhelming, as every narrow street seems to hide a promising storefront.

To help you separate the tourist traps from the true artisans, we have curated a list of the essential stops for any bread lover. These establishments prioritize traditional methods, local flour, and the kind of hospitality that makes you feel like a regular on your first visit.

Whether you are looking for a quick sandwich to take on a walk along the Rhône or a decadent pastry to enjoy with a café crème, Arles has a baker to satisfy your craving. We have evaluated these spots based on the quality of their dough, the creativity of their recipes, and their standing within the local community.

Below is our definitive guide to the best ovens in the city, ensuring you spend less time searching and more time savoring the flavors of Provence.

Procured mini jambon quiche, tartinette trois fromage and 2 coffee eclairs 😽delicious and a mere 13.50 euros for breakfast for two - much better than the 53 euros it would have cost at the hotel for two! 😊

Passed by chance and picked up the most amazing baguette we've had so far. Such a friendly couple serving us. The raspberry macarons with pistachio filling are to die for.

Went to get a birthday cake for my brother. But as non French speaking tourists it is always a guess if you are going to be able to comunnicate with the person in the store. To our suprise, the man behind the register had perfect English, along with many other languages! He was very friendly and gave us candles for on the cake. It is a nice little store with many items to choose from, with amazing service and pricing, we will come here again:)

Sweetest lady who helped us decide what to get. We got the Pain de chocolat and the brioche de chocolat and loved it. Perfect crunch to soft ratio.
Helen Tran★★★★★
We came a bit late, thus the selection was a bit more limited. The baguette was the best one we’ve had on this trip so far. Chewy, airy inside but with a crispy crust! Cheese pretzel was also very nice with strong cheesy aroma. We also got little treats for our friends (biscuits).
scott williams★★★★★
One of the best baguettes I've ever tasted.
Stephanie Loo★★★★★
Best baguette I had in all of my stops down south! Gonna miss this so much! Highly recommended!!
Mark★★★★★
This is a place that understands the art of bread and all things yeasty. Perhaps the best chocolate brioche I’ve ever had; light, even flaky, the perfect balance of chocolate. Also has an amazing baguette. I was planning to eat it with some Chèvre as I biked along the canal du midi, but ended up just eating it plain.

On my extremely long bike packing tour, what a place to have some baked goods, baguette here is top standard, I've tested many bakerys over France, this place really gets it. Also has plenty of seating which I ate my baguette. Staff was super kind and sweet, very keen on keeping the place clean
April Way★★★★★
We visited during heavy rain when the bakery was quiet, and the service was excellent. We loved their sandwiches and baguette, and the Paris-Brest was quite good as well. A great spot to stop by!

Really cute cafe right off the main drag. Great quiches and tasty sandwiches for quite cheap. Went here two times while we were in Arles.

Were thrilled to find a place in arles that had good healthy smoothies. Also had quiche which was very good. Very helpful that the person at the counter spoke English.

Lovely atmosphere, lots to choose from. Very happy with our selecton of vege quiche and eclair. Enough tables inside for a quick sit down before heading back out to explore Arles.

This place has the best coffee drink I’ve ever had in my life. Their mochaccino is basically the creamiest, richest, best hot chocolate ever, with a shot of espresso. The pastries (a roule and a carré à la pomme) were good too, but it was really the mocha that made it such a great experience.

One of the best bakeries I've been in all of France. Super tasty desserts, friendly staff, great atmosphere. One of the best places in Arles. Check out also the garden

This bakery was out of this world so good. We got a variety of pastries that were all delicious but 2 stand outs for sure are the fougasse aux olives and the award winning FLAN !!!!! Ended up going back for a second serving. Also really appreciated the kindness of the employee who helped us out. How lucky are we to have stumbled upon this place. Thank you for making such delicious treats. I cannot wait to got back.
Jade Csy★☆☆☆☆
Went in to purchase the items they won awards for and those didn’t disappoint. The MOST disappointing part was the young lady with dark hair, short and a little bigger, had NO service at all. She didn’t greet me, I had to initiate with a ‘bonjour’ and a smile. Then she just looked at me with no smile back, asked me what I wanted. I spoke in my broken French one baguette tradition, she wrapped it with a piece of paper then asked for $. I pointed at a bag and asked in English if I could get one for the baguette, she just shook her head and gesture they didn’t have any. The guy behind me helped translated and she still said no to him. Here’s the best part, I see bags behind her. The guy was as confused as I was. Finally I asked for a small bag that’s usually for pastries, she finally handed one to me (most reluctantly). I would recommend this place if you want something quick but if you want service, go elsewhere.
Seiriol Dawes-Hughes★★☆☆☆
Below average boulangerie - pastries were clearly a day old and lacking freshness
paolo★★★★★
I had a Baguette tradition, and it was crunchy, baked to perfection, and an eclair was truly light and delicious. This bakery has a wide range of French classics, and I will visit again to try the rest. The only truly negative side is that the staff working there were really rude, and the packaging was not given for take-away, and the customer service nearly did not exist. Very sad for such a good-quality bakery to have such poor staff. Such delicious and craftily baked goods should be served by more professionally trained staff, or, to be more contemporary, by robots. They cost less, they are empathetic with all customers regardless of race, origin, or foreigners like myself, and they don't go on a strike if they break a nail. To summarize food experience was superb, customer service was very bad
Giulia Andreoli★★★★☆
Fresh, homemade baked products that go from savory "fogasses" to delicious slices of cakes. Unfortunately there's no place to seat.

I stopped by chance at 1:15 pm. Phew, still open! A friendly welcome despite the late hour. That fougasse from Aigues-Mortes was calling my name. Well, it's been years since I've had one this good, with a capital B. A true heaven. I'll definitely make the trip from Avignon again. Bravo!
Poisky !★★☆☆☆
Between the ever-increasing prices and the fact that the shop is empty at 11 am because nothing is ready, it's not great. And don't even get me started on the waitresses' behavior, which is the worst—no smiles, no eye contact, they practically make it clear they don't want to serve you... Anyway, I live right next door, but I prefer to take my car and go somewhere else.

Excellent bakery, clean and welcoming. The bread is delicious and the saleswoman is friendly and very pleasant. I highly recommend it.

Exceptional experience! You can relax get a coffee and a wonderful and masterfully prepared piece of dessert! Like the art books in the cafe, the desserts are work of art!

Loved sampling a couple of their beautiful pastries. Both were delicious. The woman working there was even kind enough to let my husband charge his phone.
Markus★★★★★
Amazing experience! The location itself is small but looks beautiful. The small pastry is pricey, but are worlds above anything I've tasted elsewhere! Selection is limited but gets more attention and love 🙂 The pastry tastes amazing, and nothing was too sweet! The coffee, we had Frappe, was also great for the warm weather. I can absolutely recommend this patisserie! 🙂

Absolutely fabulous Gluten free & vegan delight. Has the pistachio dessert and it blew me away. Such a perfect balance of sweetness and lightness in the creation. My highlight of visiting Arles.

Very very delicious, maybe the best we’ve ever tasted in France, cakes. They are in the higher price range but you can definitely taste that they are worth it! We had the chocolate yuzu one but would’ve liked to have stayed more days in Arles just to try them all 😅😋

I tasted the best and crispiest baguette in this amazing bakery. Croissants and desserts are also delicious. Nice and friendly service, pleasant atmosphere. We were very satisfied and recommend it.
Aurelie LABBE★★★★★
A lovely bakery with a very warm welcome. I came to pick up a basket through the Too Good To Go app. The quality of the products is excellent! The prices are reasonable considering the very high quality of the products! I must mention the lovely smile and friendliness of the saleswoman. Very pleasant! I recommend this charming little bakery. Thank you for your cheerful service.
Inga K.★★★★★
Vielen Dank!
Émilie Rey★☆☆☆☆
The products are okay, but the service is appalling. Leaving the bakery, I realized there was a mistake in my order. I went back to point it out. The saleswoman was condescending and spoke to me in a very unpleasant tone. After an argument between the saleswomen about who did what and the 20-cent price difference between the two items, she put what she had given me back in the display case (the hygiene was questionable) and swapped it for what I wanted without a smile or a word of apology. Unfriendly service, no manners whatsoever. What a shame.
YVES FLAMENT★★★★★

came to arles on a sunday, which as any traveller in france quickly learns, means everything is closed. was determined to find a french pastry regardless and thankfully this place was open and not too far from where the bus dropped us off. inside they had far more than just pastries, think quiches, croque monsieurs and other french classics, making it a great spot for a proper lunch stop. plenty of tables both inside and out, we sat outside and enjoyed the whole thing. the food was delicious and extremely buttery, but that is entirely expected and frankly the point of french food. the croque monsieur was especially good. ideal for a quick lunch, sunday or otherwise.
Suzie Lee★★★★☆
Good pastries and baguettes! We stopped at this bakery cafe outside the old city for a coffee and pastries. The pastries were good, but the coffee was a little watery and bitter. We took home one of their baguettes and it was excellent.

Tasty food and good people here ... recommend it ... although admittedly a busy road atmosphere is not what one would always prefer ... my only dilemma was so many simple but unusual and delicious choices while my calorie budget only allows one croissant for breakfast 😁

Disappointed that we encountered an empty machine at 9:00 Monday morning. That is apparently their day off, it's not 24 hours per day, 7 days a week as this listing has said.

What an incredible automated pastry vending machine! 🍰 🥮 🥧 🧁🍩🍪 ✨ The pastries are always fresh and absolutely heavenly. The machine is constantly restocked with a fantastic variety of different options, so there’s something for every taste. 🤤 My daughter and I love getting a little treat whenever we come to Arles. We live in Ireland, and we’re always so excited to get our hands on So’ Gourmand’s delicious pastries! 🇮🇪❤️ I’m coming back in end of October, and I’m already excited about getting to try some new pâtisseries! I honestly can’t wait. Such a brilliant concept, and the quality of the pastries is just amazing. A must-try when visiting Arles! 😍 Soumaya Kehili

Excellent desserts, ranging from donuts to intricately crafted tarts in both texture and flavor. Even the simplest pastries are expertly made and thoughtfully designed to delight those with a sweet tooth. Everything is delicious, and you'll want to try it all. It's as beautiful as it is tasty! Thank you and congratulations on your work.
Sherazade Ezine★★★★★
Absolutely fantastic concept and exceptional pastries. Despite the vending machine's huge success, it's restocked two to three times a day, which is really appreciated. There's something for everyone and every craving. Impeccable quality, more than reasonable prices, and a concept accessible 24/7. Honestly, go for it without hesitation: you won't be disappointed. By far the best pastry shop, unbeatable in both quality and price.
Mess Messaouda★★★★★
The vending machine idea is truly original; I love the concept. This is my second visit, and I must admit that today I really treated myself. I got some Nutella cream puffs for my husband, which he thought were absolutely delicious. The children loved the donuts and cookies, and I thoroughly enjoyed the strawberry cake, my favorite. Everything was excellent, high-quality products. You can taste the homemade quality, and that's truly delightful. Well done and thank you for these wonderful flavors; I highly recommend it.

The pizza and the pain au chocolate were amazing, we came here twice on our visit to Arles because we couldn’t just come once and leave. This is such a great little bakery - tucked away on a quiet side of town. The baguette cereale was particularly good. There is also a beautiful little shaded patio across the road for you to enjoy coffee with your croissant. At the time of writing it is closed on Weds & Thurs.

Really enjoyed this bakery. Unfortunately, I don't know the French name but it's a pastry with apple filled inside. It has a vanilla flavour that's just so delicious and was recommended to me by the worker. Value. Seems very reasonable too. There's some outdoor seating just across the road under a grapevine.

Lovely bakery! We stopped for lunch at this lovely bakery and had the plat de jour (chicken stroganoff). It was really delicious and terrific value for money. There were lots of other delicious treats on offer but we were too full after eating the super generous portion!

This time in Arles we discovered the wonderful Boulangerie Patisserie Poudevigne, we went back multiple times during our stay, we particularly enjoyed the cream-filled brioche, pain aux chocolat, and chausson aux pommes - all divine! We also recommend this boulangerie as a perfect stop if you are wanting a delightful small bite at lunchtime while out and about taking in the marvellous sites and events throughout the city - we loved the Italian sandwich! Highly recommend!

Essential Tips for Enjoying Bakeries in Arles

To make the most of your gastronomic tour of Arles, it helps to understand the local rhythm and etiquette. French bakeries are places of precision, and knowing how to navigate them will ensure you get the freshest products and the warmest service during your visit.

  • Go Early for the Best Selection: The best bakeries in Arles often sell out of their signature items by mid-morning. If you have your heart set on a specific pastry or a specialty loaf, aim to arrive between 7:00 AM and 9:00 AM, when the shelves are fully stocked and the goods are still warm from the oven.
  • Know Your Bread Vocabulary: While "une baguette" is universal, Arles bakeries often feature regional specialties. Look for "pain au levain" (sourdough) or "pain de campagne" (country bread), which usually offer a denser crumb and a longer shelf life, making them perfect for a picnic.
  • Order "Tradition" over "Classique": By French law, a "baguette tradition" can only contain flour, water, salt, and yeast—no additives or frozen dough. If you want to taste the baker’s true skill, always ask for "une tradition, s’il vous plaît."
  • Embrace the Quiche and Sandwich: Many high-quality bakeries in Arles double as lunch spots. A sandwich on a fresh baguette or a slice of savory quiche Lorraine offers an affordable, high-quality lunch that rivals many sit-down restaurants, saving you both time and money.
  • Bring Cash for Small Purchases: While most modern bakeries accept credit cards, many traditional artisans enforce a minimum spend for card payments. Keeping a few Euro coins in your pocket ensures a smooth transaction when you just want a single croissant or a small loaf.

Arles is a city that rewards those who slow down and pay attention to detail, and its bakeries are no exception. By stepping off the main squares and seeking out the shops where locals line up in the morning, you unlock a sensory experience that is as much a part of the city’s heritage as the Amphitheatre.

Ultimately, the best bakery in Arles is the one that makes you feel welcome and sends you back onto the sun-drenched streets with a paper bag full of warmth. Take your time, try a variety of specialties, and let the scent of butter and yeast guide your journey through this historic Provençal city.
