Toulouse may be famous for its aerospace industry and distinctive pink terracotta architecture, but the true soul of the "Ville Rose" is found on a plate. From the bustling stalls of Marché Victor Hugo to the intimate bistros lining the cobblestone streets of the Carmes district, the city offers a culinary landscape that is as rich as its history. However, experiencing the authentic flavors of southwestern France does not require a reservation at a Michelin-starred establishment or a hefty expense account.
The beauty of dining in Toulouse lies in its accessibility. The local cuisine, heavily influenced by Gascon traditions, is inherently rustic, hearty, and designed to be shared. Staples like cassoulet, Toulouse sausage, and duck confit are foundational dishes that many kitchens perfect without inflating the price. This means that budget-conscious travelers and students can eat just as well as luxury seekers, provided they know where to look.
Finding affordable dining in a major French city can sometimes feel like a treasure hunt. Tourist traps often lurk near the Capitole, charging premium prices for mediocre, reheated fare. To truly eat well on a budget, you need to follow the locals. The best value is often found in the formules du midi (lunch set menus), which offer two or three courses at a fraction of the dinner price.
This guide is designed to help you navigate the culinary scene without breaking the bank. We have focused on establishments that prioritize fresh, local ingredients and traditional cooking methods while maintaining fair, transparent pricing. Whether you are looking for a quick bite between sightseeing or a leisurely dinner that captures the essence of the Southwest, there is an option here for you.
We have scoured the city center and its vibrant outer neighborhoods to compile a list that balances quality, portion size, and atmosphere. These are not just the cheapest places to eat; they are the places where the value-to-quality ratio is the highest. You will find a mix of traditional French cooking, international flavors, and modern bistro concepts.
Below is a curated selection of the best affordable restaurants in Toulouse that prove you don’t need a big budget to eat like royalty in the Pink City.

Don’t pass this up! Great cordial service. Very calm pleasant atmosphere. Food excellent, best huîtres since coming to France. Fabulous saumon tartar. Great bottle of wine on recommendation.

Great food, lovely people - great value
Great choice of wines by the glass or bottle

Cool tapas bar conveniently located close to the Capitole. A variety of freshly made tapas are served in a modern and vibrant environment. A terrace is available to eat outside. The staff is friendly and welcoming, a real plus!

First time eating at a tapas bar. Really nice place with a good atmosphere. It was warm so all the doors and windows were open so the good vibes out in the square filtered in too. Food was excellent as was my cocktail. Friendly staff and we had the pick of where to sit.
Maria S.★★★★☆
Fun place on the street or inside bar…had to try here as it was hopping and obviously a popular choice! Need a reservation but as luck would have it they got a cancellation just as we arrived. Food is inventive, flavorful and varied. My Aperol Spritz was perfect! Good choice to soak in the local atmosphere, enjoy the exuberance of the patrons and kick back with an interesting array of “bites.”

This was a wonderful, authentic dining experience with fabulous food. Our server was delightful and very helpful with wine recommendations.

I highly recommend. Fresh food, local herbs, cooperative with local farmers, honey producers. The chef is preparing food so you can watch it. The taste is unbelievable! And the place is lovely, you can feel Toulouse's style in surrounding buildings. The place is quiet. Small, private. The prices are good.

Not many gluten free options but the vegan celery risotto and japanese salad( ginger carrot) tasted great! Vibe like a fusion Japanese izakaya~
Maria Achilleia★★★★★
Petit voyage is a small restaurant in Toulouse with a capacity of around 12 tables so better to make a reservation, I did not so I had to rush my dinner between bookings. The risotto was tasty but the portion was small for me. And the carrot 🥕 cake was rich and not too sweet. The stuff was friendly. Recommend it!
Elise Hiddink★★★★★
Loved eating in this little spot! I was looking for a place to eat around 13.00u, and this had amazing reviews and was close by.
And reviews were right! The lady serving people was amazing. Her english was great, and if I felt that if I needed help, she would give it. Menu was divers and loved the specials of the day.
I chose a special of the day, which was a risotto. It tasted amazing!
I would really recommend this place! No spacious seating, but enough for a good!

We really enjoyed the food and atmosphere here. We had the mussels, leeks, sautéed squid, skirt steak and croque monsieur. Every dish was very tasty. It was way too much food for two people but we brought our dog (she’s a big eater!). Our waiter was terrific and he spoke excellent English. This is a great spot to have lunch, dinner or just drinks. Prices were super reasonable too. Overall, we felt this was an excellent value.
Kevin M★★★★★
Very cool spot! We tried a few different dishes and they were all great. The stand outs for me were the bone marrow (so flavorful, melt in your mouth), and the gnocchi (the gravy like sauce with it was so good) The decor is very interesting too, very French artsy. And you’ve gotta check out the bathrooms! The staff were also great, very friendly! I’d recommend this place for sure!
Tim Lofts★★★★☆
An excellent evening meal. Really outstanding Tataki Thon and Ceviche, plus my wife enjoyed the moules.
Ate at a pavement table and, even tough there was a staff shift change, the service was seamless.
Petronella Wa★★★★☆
We had a reservation online, rhis worked well. It was a saturday lunch and it was very full. We had to wait for the food quite long, but when it came,it was all ok. The tataki thon was very very good and also the little pulpos with wild rice.
The frittes are not crispy at all, but they taste very well 👌
Filet mignone du pork tasted well, but I prefer it rose, this time it was slightly over and a little dry. But the zucchini was superb
Sebastian Czyżo★★★★★
The service was genuinely warm and friendly, making the whole experience very enjoyable. Both the food and the beer were good, and everything was served with a smile. A nice place to relax and enjoy a meal – I’d happily visit again.

Le May is an nbsolutely amazing place to grab lunch located in a beautiful street with plenty of outdoor seating and amazing food. Everything was great and at a very generous price. Ordering from the du jour options was very fun as well. I'll have to come by again next time I come to Toulouse.
Lauren★★★☆☆
The restaurant is located on a very cute side street without much traffic or noise. I think if you are a meat eater, this is a great restaurant - the people I was with really enjoyed! But as a vegetarian, there are not many options. I was happy to see a veggie plate but it was pretty lame and seemed like vegetables taken from a jar and put on the plate.
Kieran Hill★★★★★
Had a good meal. Service was quick and friendly. Food and wine was tasty.
Marin Ianev★★★★☆
We booked a table as it was busy the night before. Staff was very friendly and helpful with our little French. We got first drinks (4) for free. Food was good. Delicious. Home cooked. We had duck ,beef steak and some starters. Wine was good. Good value for money.
ertug kuran★★★★★
We loved this place for dinner—it was the perfect remedy for our exhaustion.
The restaurant's atmosphere and service were warm and welcoming, making us feel right at home. The price-to-quality ratio was excellent.
For just 49 euros, we enjoyed a fantastic menu:
- **Toulouse casserole** (made with beef) that simply melted in the mouth
- **Duck pâté**, rich and flavorful
- **Grandma’s simmering dish**, featuring tender, delicious duck drumsticks
- A **Tarte Tatin** so light and heavenly, I couldn’t even pause to take a photo
- Plus, a **35cl bottle of wine** to round out the meal
A truly wonderful dining experience!

Lovely garden under vine branches providing shadow and repose, good for a relaxed lunch in small parties. We had a vegetarian plate with aubergine quiche, lentils and a small yet delicious salad. The place is family-run and the staff is kind, hospitable and talkative. Prices are average for Toulouse (in general on the higher end).

Wonderful simple food.
Tasty ingredients executed with simplicity. It’s extremely affordable. Its a gem. The service is also very attentive. It feels like eating in a home more than a restaurant which the only caveat being they make better tasting food than what you could do at home.
100% recommend :-)!!

Delicious, inexpensive local French cuisine, charming restaurant with beautiful terrasse in summer shaded with vines. Popular with local salariés. Very friendly and welcoming staff. Artistic, informal cafe decor. Only open weekdays at lunchtime, so it feels like best kept secret of Toulouse. Take-way possible during confinement. Recommended.

Came in here with seven friends and the lovely people at the front were so welcoming despite the sudden rush of orders, giving us personal recommendations and favourites.
The toulousain sandwich was absolutely delightful. If you’re looking for somewhere to grab a nice sandwich in Toulouse, I couldn’t recommend a better place. Great prices too!
Tânia Seixas (500milcoisas)★★★★★
I stopped here on my last day in Toulouse and it was one of the highlights of the trip. The sandwich was fresh, delicious and made with high-quality ingredients, but what really made the experience special was the service.
The staff were incredibly kind, welcoming and patient, making me feel genuinely welcome. Sometimes it's not just about the food, but about how a place makes you feel, and I left with a big smile.
If you're looking for a great sandwich and a place where you'll be treated with genuine warmth, I highly recommend it.
Mayra Martinez★★★★★
Visited them today and wow! The sandwich was really good! I arrived just as the owner was opening the shop and he was very welcoming and accommodating speaking in English and explaining everything. He is definitely not greedy with the ingredients of the baguette of your choice and boy mine was full of delicious stuff! The flavour of everything paired perfectly with the quality of the bread and overall I will be very happy to visit them again 🙂
Dhanya Venkatesh★★★★★
The sandwich was indeed gourmet! It had good quality ingredients which were generously prepared. The person who took the order was super friendly. I did a takeout.

A dinner that felt like being let in on a secret
From the moment you settle onto the terrace — bread tucked into a crumpled paper bag, a deep garnet cocktail glinting in a crystal highball — Aux Pieds Sous la Table sets a tone that is both effortless and considered.
The kitchen plays with contrast beautifully.
A silky starter of whipped mousseline crowned with toasted nuts and green herbs arrived in a bowl the colour of the Mediterranean.
Then, a main course of slow-cooked duck breast and glistening charred leek, scattered with sesame and micro greens, resting in a shimmering olive-green pool — a dish that was as lovely to look at as it was to eat.
The waiters moved through the room with genuine warmth, attentive without hovering, knowledgeable without performing. A rare thing.
This is the kind of restaurant you find yourself already planning to return to before you have even finished dessert.
Great food, exceptional hospitality, and a terrace that feels like the best-kept secret in Toulouse. An evening I will not forget.

Very nice place for dinner in Toulouse. They make really good food, I like all dishes from appetizer to dessert, all taste good. Plating and presentation was nice, all dishes look very artistic. A special note to highlight is that they do very nice vegan menu if you need. I would definitely come again.
Mathew L★★★★★
Excellent service with friendly and attentive staff, a cozy atmosphere near Arnaud-Bernard, and exquisite cuisine that beautifully blends modern creativity with traditional flavors. Every dish was thoughtfully prepared, with careful attention to presentation and balance of taste. A memorable dining experience that fully lives up to its reputation, and one we look forward to repeating.
Gustavo Carneiro★★★☆☆
Cozy and dim ambient. Service varies a lot depending on luck and on who serves you. Food is decent but the portion sizes are a bit small for my taste.
Makram Chehayeb★★★★☆
Went there for Valentines and took the set menu.
The place had a good atmosphere, great for a couple’s dinner.
We started with the cocktails: “First Kiss” and “Last Kiss”. The first was cassis based and the second citrus fruit and peach based. Both were good.
The tasting menu was also good, the main dish though, the fish, had an amazing idea that fell short. A croissant based sauce! The dish lacked seasoning, and acidic flavours to make it more well rounded.
The service, though was slow, was great in the sense that they offered us 2 glasses of champagne to compensate for the error which led to us waiting a long time for the food. Always a nice gesture!

Great food, nice staff! Had the full meal, entrée, plate and dessert, all three were top-notch! Don't come here asking for your meat burnt to crisp, just let these people show you what good food looks and tastes like.

One would think they offer simple dishes but I was gladly surprised of how good they were.
The beef salad is really nice (they add flavorful dry tomatoes and the meat was good too).
Service is kind and patient. I think it's very good for the price.

I was in Toulousse and stumbled upon this restaurant. The server was very friendly and helped with my lack of French. The menu is in French but google translate works great.
My food was superb! I met the very handsome and friendly owner too.
Highly recommend!
Toilette is clean. Staff is kind and happy.
Loved it!!
Miroslav Harant★☆☆☆☆
We came in for lunch as a group of 5, the interior is quite eye-catching, leaves a good first impression. Sadly, the experience itself was far from good from then on.
Three out of five meals were bad - one of them was lasagne, burned at the edges which was covered up with a layer of tomato sauce. The other two were steaks, specifically ordered as medium and well done rare - what was brought to us was red, bloody at places and totally raw. We politely returned the steaks (the lasagne was eatable), the waitor came back with them looking slightly better, half of the steak was fine, the other was full of sinews and still containing some raw parts.
While returning the meals, the staff was nice, didn't say any sort of apology though. Plus, there were at least two other people returning their meals.
The prices are mediocre, it's not expensive, but even in the cheapest bad-looking pub I wouldn't expect 'quality' like this.
If you're looking for a place to eat in the center of Toulouse, there's plenty of other restaurants I recommend going to more.
Matěj Martiník★☆☆☆☆
I've decided to try here a rib steak for almost 20 €. I got just raw meat little roasted on sides. A waiter took us the dish without any apologize and few moments later we got the same piece that has been taken away but more grilled. Sorry, but this is unacceptable behaviour for me, moreover the meal wasn't the cheapest.
Btw. I saw more people returning their dishes.

This place is absolutely delicious. Everything is homemade. You get a great meal for right around €15. Gets very crowded at about five minutes after 11. We had aubergine with beef, Salmon with cauliflower, and everyone in our party said it was the best meal that they had in Toulouse up to that point.

Very delicious home made food, I like how they have a different plat du jour everyday and I can plan my visit by deciding beforehand what I want to eat. Efficient service too. The parmentier i had was yummy and prices are extremely reasonable for the quality and quantity. Will definitely be back.

Incredible Moroccan restaurant in the heart of Toulouse! Found it purely by chance and I didn't hesitate to have lunch here, since it's 100% vegetarian. The menu costs 15€ and it includes a delicious and refreshing chickpea salad, tajin of your choice (I had the one with green beans and eggplant, simply delicious) and dessert. The food is very flavorful, hearty and healthy at the same time. The man who runs the restaurant is incredibly kind and pleasant. I totally recommend it!

Simple, but very delicious, vegetarian cous cous or tagine. The staff are great, very friendly, and even brought me a second helping!
The set menu had split pea and cumin soup, the main course and a choice of pastries for dessert, and a choice of tea to accompany the meal - we had a Ginger, and a mint tea.
Really great place for lunch

I’m sure the chef doesn’t need another five star review judging by the already high score he got here. I just wanna shout out to the fellow gourmands to dine there asap before the chef win a Michelin star and raise the price!
I was truly impressed by the asparagus desert I had today, a symphonic explosion of clean, precise, balanced tastes. A dish speaks for the chef, non-pretentious yet passionate and talented, I bet 5 bucks he couldn’t care less about fame and money, someone just simply enjoys cooking and creating, and wanna make his dinners happy!

It was innovative, delicious and celebration of seasonal produce and with equally innovative, tasty options for vegetarians as well and not just a plate of vegetables or risotto like in many French restaurants. And above all, it was affordable - budget friendly too!

A group of 8 of us found this restaurant last year and had the most amazing and delicious experience! Amazing place to have food. High quality sandwiches, quick service and great value. One of the best sandwiches I've had in the world. It would be a big mistake not to eat here.

Always seeing a long queue outside and today we decided to try it for ourselves. The ingredients are indeed good and fresh but the bread was too hard for us. But maybe its just our preference. Will still recommend as its still probably one of the better sandwicheries in town.

Legitimately top quality sandwiches here. We tried a couple and both were extremely tasty. They're not the cheapest, but the price to quality (and quantity) ratio is more than reasonable. One of the best sandwiches I've had in France, not just Toulouse. Guys were also sound blokes and willing to explain and advise if you want or need.

They also offer drinks outside the norm, which is refreshing (litteraly).
My colleague loved both his sandwiches, myself I didn't do much of a good job when chosing mine. I was almost sure I had picked a sweet and sour one (called "le Notre"), however I got a bland sandwich, just ham, mozarella and green leaves, to be honest I was a bit underwhelmed. It was surely my fault though, so I'll return and I'll pick another sandwich next time.

This is a friendly, lively sandwicherie in the heart of Toulouse that has many options to choose from! I am vegetarian, and the veggie sandwich was delicious. On top of this, my friend and I do not have the best French yet but the owner and workers were still very friendly with us and made a damn good sandwich. Please note that it can get very busy in this little shop (indication that it is just so delicious), so please be sure to get your sandwich and go eat nearby, by the lovely riverside
Merci beaucoup 😊

Wonderful restaurant, first the service is really nice. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful, we had excellent advice on the wine selection and the eventually propsed wine was an excellent match to the meals we ordered. Second the starters and mains were just excellent, portions are quite royal and you will not leave this place hungry. There were wonderful options to choose from and I understood the menu rotates relatively frequently. Then finally the deserts... oh my... just wonderful. I have added some picture to illustrate but you have to taste it to experience it. I doubt you will disappointed, we definitely were not and will return when possible. Highly recommended!

We had a delicious 3 course dinner at the end of a long day of touring. I booked the day before and was excited about the food we might be offered as it depended on what was available that day…
The staff were excellent too as they were able to explain the menu in English.

Wonderful restaurant. We booked a table for 2 for lunch. Everything was spot on. We were glad that we booked our table in advance. The place is fully booked. And that is very understandable. We will definitely be back.

We came for lunch, and got the full entree plat dessert course. Food was delicious, service was friendly and efficient. Nothing to complain about as quality was very good considering the price for the lunch menu. Portions were also reasonable and we ate well. Reservations are definitely recommended.

We went to this gorgeous little restaurant in the evening! We are very impressed , firstly the quality of food and the taste is simply outstanding. The main course was brought hot which in my opinion is essential. The veal meat was cooked to perfection. The starter terrine de canard was also delicious . We had ice cold champagne and we loved the cheese at the end and the millefeuille. The service was warm and attentive. This restaurant is impeccable with report quality and price. We want to come here for sure !
Tips for Eating Well on a Budget in Toulouse
To maximize your culinary budget in Toulouse, it helps to understand how the local dining culture operates. The French approach to meals is structured, and if you work within that structure, you can unlock significant savings. By adjusting when and how you order, you can often dine at high-end venues for a fraction of the standard cost.
1. Master the "Formule du Midi": The most significant savings in Toulouse occur at lunchtime. Almost every restaurant, from casual cafes to upscale bistros, offers a fixed-price lunch menu (usually served between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM). This often includes a starter and main course, or main course and dessert, for a price that would only cover a single entrée at dinner. If you want to try a famous restaurant, go for lunch.
2. Embrace the "Plat du Jour": Instead of ordering à la carte, always ask for the daily special. The plat du jour is designed to use seasonal, abundant ingredients that the chef purchased at the market that morning. It is usually the freshest item in the kitchen and is priced aggressively to move quickly. It is often served with a small side or bread, making it a complete meal.
3. Order "Carafe" Water and House Wine: In France, tap water is safe and free. Simply ask for "une carafe d’eau" instead of bottled water to save several euros per person. Similarly, skip the expensive wine list and ask for "vin de la maison" or a "pichet" (pitcher). House wines in Toulouse are often locally sourced from the Fronton or Gaillac regions and are both excellent and affordable.
4. Look for Student Areas and Markets: Neighborhoods around the Université Toulouse Capitole or Jean Jaurès often have lower price points to cater to student populations. Additionally, the Marché Victor Hugo is a great resource. While some restaurants upstairs are pricey, you can often buy fresh bread, cheese, and charcuterie downstairs for a fraction of the cost of a sit-down meal, perfect for a picnic by the Garonne river.
5. Avoid the Main Squares for Dining: Restaurants with terraces directly facing the Place du Capitole or Place Wilson are paying a premium for that view, and they pass that cost on to you through the menu. The food is often geared toward tourists. Instead, walk two or three blocks back into the side streets of the Carmes, Saint-Cyprien, or Arnaud Bernard districts. You will find more authentic cooking and significantly better prices.
Toulouse is a city that rewards the curious eater. By venturing slightly off the main thoroughfares and adopting the local dining rhythms, you can experience the rich, decadent flavors of Occitanie without the decadent price tag. From the slow-cooked comfort of a traditional cassoulet to the vibrant spices of international street food, the Pink City ensures that good taste is never exclusive.
Whether you are refueling after a visit to the Cité de l’Espace or warming up on a chilly evening after walking along the Canal du Midi, these affordable restaurants offer a genuine taste of local life. Bon appétit!
