12 Pharmacies in Tarragona City Centre

Finding a reliable pharmacy in the heart of Tarragona is usually a straightforward task, but when you need a specific medication, late-night service, or professional health advice while navigating the historic streets, knowing exactly where to go becomes essential. The city centre, stretching from the Rambla Nova down toward the Mediterranean coast and the ancient Roman ruins, is densely packed with farmacias that cater to both residents and the steady stream of visitors. Whether you are dealing with a sudden migraine, need a refill for a chronic prescription, or are looking for specialized dermocosmetics, the local pharmacists here offer a high standard of care.

Navigating the Spanish pharmacy system can be slightly different from what international visitors might be used to at home. While many common over-the-counter painkillers and antihistamines are available, stronger medications that might be freely sold in other countries often require a prescription from a local doctor. Fortunately, pharmacists in Tarragona are highly trained health professionals who can assess your symptoms and recommend the appropriate over-the-counter solution or direct you to the nearest medical centre if the situation requires urgent attention.

The city centre is characterized by its mix of modern commercial zones and narrow, winding alleys in the Part Alta (Old Town). This geographic layout means that while a pharmacy is almost always "around the corner," the distance can feel longer if you are unwell or in a hurry. Having a mental map of the most central locations—particularly those near the main transport hubs like Plaça Imperial Tàrraco or the bustling market on Plaça Corsini—can save you valuable time during an emergency or a tight travel itinerary.

One of the most important aspects of the local pharmaceutical landscape is the system of guardia (on-duty) pharmacies. While most shops operate during standard business hours—typically from 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM and 4:30 PM to 8:30 PM—illness does not follow a schedule. The College of Pharmacists of Tarragona ensures that there is always a pharmacy open late at night, on Sundays, and during public holidays. You can usually find the roster for the current on-duty pharmacy posted on the door of any closed shop or via a quick online search.

For those managing ongoing health conditions, the pharmacies in the centre are well-stocked and accustomed to handling both physical and digital prescriptions (e-prescriptions) from the Spanish public health system. If you are a resident with a Tarjeta Sanitaria, you can simply present your card and DNI or NIE. For visitors from the EU, an EHIC card is generally accepted, though you may need to pay upfront and claim reimbursement depending on your home country’s specific agreements with Spain.

Beyond illness, these establishments serve as hubs for wellness and beauty. You will find a wide array of high-quality sun protection—essential during the hot Mediterranean summers—as well as baby care products, orthopaedic supports, and dietary supplements. The staff are usually multilingual, particularly in the pharmacies located near the Cathedral or the Rambla, and are generally very patient with tourists trying to explain symptoms in broken Spanish or Catalan.

To help you navigate this essential service efficiently, we have compiled a list of well-regarded pharmacies located in the heart of Tarragona. These locations are selected based on their accessibility, central positioning, and reputation for professional service. Use this list to find the nearest option for your current location within the city.

Wanted to ask the price, was told to buy a mask. I literally stood outside the store to ask, the crazy lady would not let go of the mask thing. I thought pharmacists are capable of common sense!

Very good pharmacy in Tarragona. Very good and nice service. Employees make effort to speak English if needed (I also heard other languages during the summer). Two important services you can't always find in Tarragona: a) they accept American Express b) they will order whatever you ask and have it ready usually the next day. Negative: Some of the brand name cosmetics you can find a bit cheaper elsewhere.

My experience at this pharmacy was not satisfactory. The service I received was quite poor, as I didn't feel well taken care of, and there was little interest shown in answering my questions. Furthermore, the establishment didn't have air conditioning, or at least it wasn't working, which made the environment very uncomfortable, especially on a hot day. Finally, I was surprised that they wouldn't accept a return. I understand that there are legal restrictions on certain health products, but I would have appreciated it if this policy had been better explained from the beginning and if the staff had been more empathetic. I don't recommend it. There are pharmacies in the neighborhood that treat local residents better, offer better prices, and at least allow you to go inside without getting heatstroke.
Mar Gutiérrez★★★★★
The pharmacist who served me was very kind and polite, the pharmacy was very clean and organized, and the temperature was quite suitable for June 25th. It's appreciated that the premises aren't freezing cold during the summer and scorching hot during the winter, as sudden temperature changes are detrimental to the overall well-being of people who are sensitive to temperature and its fluctuations.
Joaquin Hostalotbenitez★☆☆☆☆
I went to pick up a medication my doctor prescribed and asked for the brand name instead of the generic. They told me they didn't have it, only to sell generics whenever they wanted. It's impossible that they don't have Augmentin, a very common antibiotic in a pharmacy. And to top it all off, they don't even answer the phone...

During my holiday in Spain, I visited this pharmacy and had an excellent experience. The pharmacist, Diana, was incredibly professional, kind, and attentive. She took the time to listen carefully and gave me clear, helpful advice that made a real difference. It’s rare to find such genuine care and expertise, especially when you’re away from home. I felt completely at ease and well looked after. Highly recommend this pharmacy. Thank you, Diana, for your outstanding service!

Went in to get advice x2 during our holiday. Both times the staff were very helpful and caring. On Sunday I went in to get advice for some stronger pain killers for my husband. Thankyou so much to the very helpful young lady on duty and the pharmacist. Your care and advice appear to have resolved the issue. Much as 😊

Today I went to the pharmacy and I was very well helped by a young lady named Ilham. She really took the time for me, listened carefully and gave me clear and professional advice on what I could best buy. Her kindness, patience and helpfulness really stood out to me – nothing was too much for her. Such employees really make the difference. Thank you Ilham for the excellent service! 🌟

In my opinion, the best pharmacy in Tarragona. The service is excellent, as is the space. It also has a rich history, having been founded in 1912! In conclusion, it's a very good option if you're looking for a pharmacy with a pleasant atmosphere and professional staff.

They called me to confirm the products in my order because I had requested a specific format of the medication, which raised concerns. They corrected my mistake and sent me the correct format. Then, they combined my two partial orders, which totaled over €60, and gave me free shipping and refunded my shipping costs. If I could give 10 stars, I would.

They treated me terribly. I told them they made a mistake when they gave me the pills from my prescription (there were quite a few), and they called me a liar. I'm never going back. I'm sure there are plenty of pharmacies out there.

Except for a blonde lady with bangs who's been there forever and the owner, who's really nice. The rest of the employees have very little empathy. I went one day to pick up a prescription medication on my social security card that I urgently needed for anxiety. The employee, who was completely unsympathetic, told me my refill date wasn't up yet. I explained my situation in detail, that I desperately needed the medication to cope with my 7-hour workday and to sleep better afterward. She said, "I'm sorry," completely unconcerned about my situation...seriously, you're sorry? What do you know? Twenty minutes later, at the pharmacy next door, they were incredibly kind and gave it to me without any problem. I mentioned the issue with my card date, and they said it was no problem. And another day I called to ask if they would give me Pectox... if it's available with a prescription... because I have terrible chest pain when I cough, it's the bronchitis I get every winter, and only Pectox helps, and they tell me to go to the ER... seriously? I have to go to the ER and wait 5 hours to get a prescription for expectorant syrup. I will never set foot in this pharmacy again. I'm furious. What a lack of professionalism. What a lack of experience. What a lack of empathy. And what a desire to not help a long-time customer. If you treat people who are feeling unwell and weak like this, find another profession.
Maria Ziegler★★★★★
Very good pharmacy, they have a wide variety of products and the girls treated me with great professionalism, very nice!

For me, this is the best pharmacy in the center of Tarragona. The service is excellent and inspires complete confidence in every aspect. I highly recommend asking for the saleswoman, Mari Carmen; she is incredibly kind and dedicated to her profession. All the treatments and medications she recommends always manage to solve my health problems without me having to seek out doctors. Her experience and long-standing service make all the difference; Mari Carmen is truly exceptional. Thank you so much, Mari Carmen!

Whenever I go to the pharmacy, everything is spotless and very well organized. You can tell they take great care with both cleanliness and order, which inspires a lot of confidence. The last time, I was helped by two super friendly women, Diana and Aina, and it was truly a very pleasant experience. They were very kind, approachable, and professional at all times. They took the time to listen to me and advise me with great patience. It's wonderful to encounter people like that, who serve you with a smile and make everything easier. They also explained everything very well and made sure I left with all my questions answered. The service was excellent and very personal, something that is much appreciated these days. Overall, the service at this pharmacy is a 10 out of 10: fast service, very professional staff, and a very pleasant atmosphere. I will definitely continue going there and I highly recommend it. It's so nice when you receive such good service. 😊
Suso Rodriguez★☆☆☆☆
Today, as usual, I went to pick up my medication and was served by a completely unprofessional person named Diana. I want to make sure this person's name is clear so that other people like me with reduced mobility and disabilities don't have the same experience. She was mocking me, laughing, and telling me that she wasn't going to ask me for the necessary medication notification and that I could go to other pharmacies, all while laughing. I explained that I'd always been served without any problems. I gave her my health insurance card, and she asked for my ID number and name five times, mocking and laughing with the colleague at the register because of my disability, and making rude gestures. I don't understand how they can have such unpleasant people working with the public, with so little empathy. She even called the manager herself, laughing in my face again. The manager came, and I told her that if I came back, I didn't want this girl to serve me anymore; she had treated me terribly. And her response was... We'll see! "We'll see? We'll see if I don't ask for a complaint form or call the police next time. For me, that's grounds for immediate and justified dismissal (without severance pay!). Thank you for being such good people."
Claire R. Mahony★★★★★
I went a few weeks ago looking for a specific product and they had it available at the same price as online. The first thing I want to highlight is the friendliness of the staff. Also, I couldn't find this product in other pharmacies, but I did in this one. I'll definitely be back!

This afternoon I went to the pharmacy to buy a cream for a muscle spasm. When I explained my ailment to the pharmacist, she rudely cut me off, saying she wasn't asking what was wrong, she was simply offering me a 60-gram or a 100-gram tube. After this experience, I just asked her for the prices and chose the cheaper one. It's a shame, I almost always shop there. After this experience, I don't know anymore.

Bad manners, Saturday at 9:30 PM. I went in and said good afternoon, she didn't even respond. I showed her my health insurance card on my phone, she took it without looking at me and said she should see it on her computer, still not looking at me. She gave me the medication in a bag, activated the card reader, and left, continuing to chat with the other girl. I left, said goodbye, and they didn't even respond. Anyway... I hope the problem I had with the person I was going to talk to (I won't say her name) gets resolved. She didn't give me a receipt or the slip of paper they usually give out that says when I can buy again. When someone goes to the pharmacy looking for trouble, do you do the same thing, or are you not so rude?

I went to buy my medication from another community and they treated me very well. I wasn't able to buy everything I needed, but I left happy with the attention to the public in general. In fact, they recommended another pharmacy to me to finish buying what I needed. 100%

Tips for Visiting a Pharmacy in Tarragona

Understanding the local nuances of the Spanish pharmaceutical system can make your visit much smoother, especially if you are a tourist or a new resident. While the process is generally efficient, a little preparation regarding language, prescriptions, and payment methods goes a long way. Here are a few practical tips to ensure you get exactly what you need without unnecessary delays or confusion.

Know the "Guardia" Schedule
If you need medicine late at night or on a Sunday, don’t waste time walking to a pharmacy that will likely be closed. Look for the green cross sign on the door of any pharmacy; they usually display a list showing which nearby location is currently on duty (farmacia de guardia). Alternatively, search "farmacia de guardia Tarragona hoy" on your phone for real-time information. These on-duty pharmacies are legally obligated to serve you, though they may charge a small surcharge for late-night dispensing.

Bring Your Prescription or Medication Box
If you need a refill for a prescription medication, you must bring the physical prescription from your doctor or, if you are a resident, your health card. For tourists who have run out of medication, bring the original box or a photo of the label. This allows the pharmacist to verify the active ingredients and check if an equivalent is available in Spain without a prescription, or advise you on how to see a local doctor quickly.

Prepare for "Brand Name" vs. Generic
Unlike in some countries where pharmacists automatically dispense the generic version, in Spain, doctors often prescribe by brand name. If you are looking for a specific over-the-counter drug, it helps to know the active ingredient rather than just the brand name from your home country. For example, "Tylenol" is largely unknown; asking for "Paracetamol" or "Ibuprofeno" will get you the correct medication instantly.

Don’t Expect a Grocery Store Selection
In Spain, pharmacies are strictly regulated, and you will not find them inside supermarkets or convenience stores. Furthermore, items like vitamins, contact lens solution, or even basic painkillers are sold only in pharmacies, not in gas stations or corner shops. Conversely, you won’t find snacks, drinks, or general merchandise inside a pharmacy. They are dedicated health spaces, so enter with the expectation of purchasing health-related items only.

Ask for the "Prospecto" or Advice
Spanish pharmacists are highly accessible and can often save you a trip to the doctor for minor ailments like colds, allergies, or insect bites. Don’t be shy about describing your symptoms. They will ask questions to rule out contraindications and recommend the appropriate treatment. If you buy a medication and are unsure how to take it, ask for the prospecto (the information leaflet) or simply ask the pharmacist to explain the dosage in English if your Spanish isn’t strong.

Whether you are standing on the Rambla Nova admiring the modernist facades or exploring the Roman amphitheatre, the pharmacies in Tarragona city centre provide a vital safety net for your health and wellbeing. Their central locations ensure that high-quality pharmaceutical care is never more than a short walk away.

By familiarizing yourself with the local opening hours, the on-duty rotation system, and the professional advice available inside, you can handle any minor health hiccup with confidence. The pharmacists here are dedicated to serving the community, ensuring that your visit to this beautiful coastal city remains safe, comfortable, and enjoyable.
