12 Pharmacies in Santander City Centre

Finding a reliable pharmacy is rarely a planned activity. It often happens when you are dealing with a sudden headache, a child’s fever, or the realization that you left essential prescription medication at home. In a bustling urban environment like Santander, knowing exactly where to go saves valuable time and reduces stress. This is especially true in the city centre, where the density of streets and the mix of tourist attractions and local businesses can make navigation feel overwhelming for visitors.

The Spanish pharmacy system is highly regulated and trusted, offering a level of care that often surprises international visitors. Pharmacists here are highly trained healthcare professionals who can diagnose minor ailments and dispense medication that might require a doctor’s visit in other countries. They serve as the first point of contact for non-emergency medical advice. When you walk into a farmacia in Santander, you are not just entering a retail store; you are accessing a community health hub.

Santander’s city centre is a vibrant blend of historic architecture, shopping districts, and coastal promenades. Whether you are staying near the Cathedral, shopping along Calle Burgos, or waiting for a ferry at the docks, you are never far from medical assistance. The city operates a rotating schedule of "Farmacia de Guardia" (on-duty pharmacies) to ensure that residents and visitors have 24-hour access to medication, even on Sundays and public holidays.

Understanding the layout of the city is key to accessing quick care. The central district is compact and highly walkable, meaning most pharmacies are located within a short stroll of major landmarks. They are easily identifiable by their illuminated green crosses, which glow brightly at night. Inside, you will find a mix of prescription services, over-the-counter pain relief, baby care products, and specialized dermatological lines that are popular in Spain.

For travelers, navigating the linguistic barrier can be a concern, but many pharmacists in central Santander speak English, particularly those located near the tourist-heavy areas of the Paseo Pereda or the Sardinero border. They are accustomed to helping visitors with issues like sunburn, motion sickness for the ferry rides, or lost luggage medication. Their expertise ensures that you receive the correct generic or brand-name equivalent available in the European market.

This guide focuses specifically on the heart of the city, covering the areas where you are most likely to be when the need arises. We have compiled a list of centrally located establishments known for their professional service, convenient hours, and accessibility. Whether you need a late-night antibiotic or a specific brand of contact lens solution, this information will help you navigate your options quickly.

Below is a curated selection of establishments in the central area, organized to help you find the nearest professional care without a frantic search.

Without a doubt, the best pharmacy in Santander for the service they provide. They even gave me samples to make sure I chose the right medication and didn't waste my money. And all with a smile and helpful advice. I wish I could find that kind of service in every shop.

A pharmacy is supposed to be there to help others. Here, you need to call the police, but you can't do it with your phone. You're alone and looking for a quick and effective solution, so you go to the nearest pharmacy. The pharmacist was incredibly unfriendly. If I had been a customer, I would have left without hesitation, but in this case, she simply told me no, without showing the slightest concern. So I went to find help elsewhere. One less customer.

Absolutely terrible. Unpleasant service and they left me half-assed. I won't be back. Saturday the 21st in the morning. Middle-aged woman. What a shame, considering how many people are eager to work.
Marisol Rodriguez★☆☆☆☆
We went today to buy toothpaste and the service was terrible from one of the employees. It seemed like she didn't want to be there. She gave us a dirty look as soon as we walked in, and when she finally served us, she was unfriendly. Out of politeness, we bought what we needed, but honestly, we just wanted to leave so we wouldn't have to feel so uncomfortable. We don't plan on going back; they're not worth our money. There are plenty of pharmacies in Santander where you'll get much better service.

The service I received at this pharmacy was terrible. I used to be a customer, and it's one of the pharmacies I frequented and spent money at most often, but that's over now. The treatment I received from one of the employees was appalling; she even lied to me to avoid taking responsibility. I told her I needed eye drops prescribed by my ophthalmologist, and she replied that they didn't have them at that moment, but that they could bring them from Vizcaya the next day. I told her that if they couldn't get them, I would go to another pharmacy because my private ophthalmologist had prescribed them, and it was urgent that I use them. To quote her verbatim, she said, "Don't worry, you'll have them here tomorrow afternoon; they're bringing them from Vizcaya." I asked, "Are you sure?" And I repeated how important it was. She said, "Yes, don't worry, I'll take your information anyway." So she took my name, surname, and phone number. I went at night at 10:30 PM (she told me she'd be there around 4:30 PM) and she told me she wasn't there. Not only that, she lied to me to avoid saying otherwise. I told her she was lying because she had assured me they would have it. If she didn't guarantee it, I would obviously go to any other pharmacy. And on top of that, I told her I found it unbelievable that she had the nerve to deny what she'd said and not admit that, having my contact information, she could have easily called me. To which she replied: "Yes, you're right about that." I will never return. She and her colleague have absolutely no empathy or sense of responsibility for their work. When they saw how angry I was, they called the pharmacy in Los Castros and told me, "Well, you have 15 minutes to get to the pharmacy in Los Castros before they close." (But they did it in a way that's completely incomprehensible for someone who has made a mistake. It was as if they were telling me to sort it out myself, even though I had a very red and irritated eye because I urgently needed eye drops.) I understand that anyone can make a mistake. However, I don't understand the indifference and irresponsibility when someone makes a mistake at work, much less lying to avoid responsibility. After 18 years of shopping there, that will be my last day. If all the employees are like this, they should prepare to lose customers and jobs.
Ane Pérez Martínez★☆☆☆☆
It's a disgrace that both online and on their own door they advertise their hours as being until 11:00 PM, but when you arrive at 10:36 PM, two-thirds of the shutter is down. I go in under the shutter because, as they indicate, they should be open. A fairly friendly assistant helps me, and while she's looking for my medication, a very unpleasant woman appears shouting: "EVERYONE OUT OF THE PHARMACY, it's already past 10:30 PM!" All of us inside are stunned, since they haven't finished helping us, but the woman repeats: "Everyone out! Didn't you hear me? Don't make me raise the shutter more than once!" I really don't know what she's trying to do. Does she want me to take the medication without paying? Or leave her colleague in the middle of her job...? If the pharmacy really closes at 10:30 PM, they should seriously consider changing the hours they advertise. If the service is provided outside the pharmacy, that should also be indicated. I wanted to thank the young woman who served me, as she was very kind and finished giving me the medication despite her colleague's shouting.
LAURA Laura Laura★☆☆☆☆
I've never experienced such unprofessional and uncouth service. I won't be returning. I'm leaving with a feeling of insecurity about what I bought, which is very sad because it's right in the heart of our city. I didn't want to be more explicit, but since you asked, I went in with my son because he had a problem. I politely asked the girl at the counter for help. We got off to a bad start; she didn't even say good morning, but I greeted her politely. I explained the situation, and she replied, "Oh, and what do you want?" My response was, "Well, I don't know. If I did, I'd be a pharmacist, but I'm not, so give me whatever you think is best." Without looking at the child, without showing any interest, nothing. She gave me a medication that cost me €14, and I had to go to my usual pharmacy on Monday. They examined him, gave him a different medication, and it was much better—just what could relieve his pain. I kept the original medication as a souvenir. Thank you for your attention. I don't like leaving negative reviews, but I don't like a lack of education and humanity.

With a valid, official prescription from the Madrid regional social security system, filled out and stamped by the doctor, they want to charge me as if it were a private prescription. April 24, 2026. In response to yours: It must have been so poorly filled out that it was dispensed without any problem at another pharmacy. They only asked for my health insurance card.

First of all, greetings, and I thank the staff at Alameda Pharmacy for their excellent service, their hospitality, the enthusiasm with which they greeted me, and the good advice they gave me. I am very grateful for how they have helped me and recommended me, and I am happy with the results I see in myself.

I went to a double facial cleansing workshop where they taught us how to thoroughly cleanse our faces and gave us tips and tricks to improve our appearance with a personalized routine. They were very kind and patient with our questions. I had a great time, felt very comfortable and at ease asking questions. I will continue adjusting my routine with more products that I will need throughout the seasons and according to my skin's needs, with the help of Silvia, who is a delight.

I found the various workshops I attended very useful. The staff coordination was excellent, as was the attention and empathy shown by David, Samantha, and Silvia.

They're complete rip-off artists. A hydrolyzed baby formula (necessary for babies with CMPA) that costs €30 in every pharmacy in Spain is being sold for €37. They have no shame. Update: We all make mistakes, but while I was there, I insisted that it always cost €30. The girl didn't even bother to answer me. I insisted again, and the older gentleman, who probably has more experience, heard me and could have come to verify it. I was just passing through Cantabria and I'm not going to be able to get my money back. €7 isn't going to change my life, but if a customer is insisting that the price doesn't seem right (for something as specific as a formula for special medical uses), the logical thing to do is listen and verify it instead of ignoring them.
Alicia★★★★★
Marcos is the only professional at this pharmacy. The rest... well, they're a whole other story. Neither professional nor friendly. You place an order with every detail to make things easier for them, and they order or bring you whatever they feel like. It's always packed because of its continuous opening hours and location, not for any other reason. It's a shame. I'm a regular customer.
Montserrat★☆☆☆☆
It used to work really well with the boys and girls who were there, but I went this afternoon and there were two ladies who didn't know what they were doing and were also very rude... a shame, but I'll have to look for another one.

I'm delighted with Farmacia La Avenida in Santander. I always receive friendly and professional service, but what I value most is their advice on facial care. They help me choose the creams that best suit my skin, explaining everything with great patience and care. Special thanks to Laura and Zaira for their attention and availability through various channels. It's clear they care about each customer and know their products very well. Without a doubt, it's a reliable pharmacy I always return to.
Nuria Ferrera★★★★★
Wonderful service, very friendly and professional staff. They give excellent advice and answer all your questions with genuine dedication. It's a pleasure to find a pharmacy like this. Highly recommended.
Andrea Velasco Santos★☆☆☆☆
This morning I went to the pharmacy with a prescription to buy some medication. A very kind and pleasant young man was helping me, but when there was a minor issue, a short-haired blonde colleague with terrible customer service skills came out and told me she wasn't paid anything for that prescription (which I believe is none of the customer's business). I was also going to buy sunscreen, but given this woman's rudeness (not the young man who was helping me), I decided to go to another pharmacy. They've lost a potential new customer in the neighborhood.
rebeca moira★★★★★
The pharmacy is lovely, with a wide range of products, and they also have their own brand. My experience with the staff has always been excellent; they are very friendly and helpful. Highly recommended.

The behavior of these people is appalling. My husband went to pick up an antibiotic he had ordered that morning, and when he asked for his card, instead of giving him the antibiotic, they gave him everything on the card and more because they didn't have it in stock at that moment. When he complained, their response was: "You're from another region, and we won't accept it." I've always said I won't be returning because of the owner's bad temper, but they shouldn't worry, they've lost customers like me. There are many other pharmacies, and in case you didn't know, they've opened a new one below the Augustinian building. They are kind, polite, and very professional.
Andy Gonzalez★☆☆☆☆
Good morning... a few weeks ago, my partner and I picked up some medication that's hard to find. When we went to pay, we were surprised by the price compared to where we usually buy it. We mentioned it to the clerk, and he said that was the price... which was more than 50 euros compared to our usual pharmacy, especially for something for a serious illness that requires constant care. There needs to be a bit more empathy.

Fast, professional service. Basic English, but enough to understand. Helpful staff.

Amazing from start to end! Lovely lady named Maria. Very helpful. Absoluetly stress free pharmacy. Tall guy (sorry forgot your name) also amazingly helpful. If from overseas or local honestly is the best place in the area. Many, many thanks.

I had a prescription from a private clinic; the medication was for two boxes. The woman there told me she only had one box and that I could order or buy the other one at another pharmacy. I asked her several times if she was sure it wouldn't be blocked and that I could get it, and she said yes, definitely. In short, I went to another pharmacy, and sure enough, I was right—they had blocked the prescription, and now they won't let me get another one because of the woman at this pharmacy, and I'm going to be left without my medication. Thank you so much.
Maribel del Toro★★★★★
Excellent service and attention. I placed my order online and it arrived quickly, well packaged, and in perfect condition. The website is clear, easy to use, and they offer good prices compared to other online pharmacies. Highly recommended if you're looking for reliable and effective health products.

This pharmacy has been a real find: I was looking for a specific facial cream for rosacea, and I found it here at a much better price than elsewhere. The service was also very friendly. Of course, I've already recommended it to a friend; she's also compared the products she uses and prices, and she'll be placing an order soon. 100% recommended. Thank you.

Tips for Visiting a Pharmacy in Santander

Navigating healthcare in a foreign country can be daunting, but a little local knowledge goes a long way. Spanish pharmacies operate slightly differently than those in the UK, the US, or other parts of Europe. Understanding these nuances will ensure your visit is smooth, efficient, and gets you back to enjoying the beautiful Cantabrian coast as quickly as possible. Here are essential tips to keep in mind when seeking medication or advice in the city centre.

Know the "Farmacia de Guardia" System
While regular pharmacies typically operate from 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM and 4:30 PM to 8:00 PM, medical needs don’t stick to business hours. Every pharmacy in the city displays a sign on their door or window listing the nearest "Farmacia de Guardia" for that specific night or weekend. You can also ask at your hotel reception or check local listings online to find the pharmacy currently open 24 hours.

Carry Your Passport for Prescriptions
If you need to fill a prescription from your home country, it is not legally valid in Spain. You will need to see a local doctor for a Spanish prescription. However, if you have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or a UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC), you can use these at pharmacies to access state-subsidized medication. Always carry a physical ID, as some controlled substances require identification for purchase.

Don’t Underestimate Over-the-Counter Advice
Spanish pharmacists have the authority to dispense many medications "behind the counter" that would require a prescription elsewhere. If you have a urinary tract infection, a mild allergic reaction, or a bad cold, describe your symptoms directly to the pharmacist. They can legally provide antibiotics or stronger anti-inflammatories in many cases, saving you a trip to a public health clinic.

Bring the Empty Box
If you have run out of a specific medication, always bring the empty blister pack or box to the pharmacy. Brand names differ significantly between countries. By showing the pharmacist the active ingredient (the generic name) on the packaging, they can instantly match it to the Spanish equivalent. This prevents confusion and ensures you receive the exact correct dosage.

Look for the Green Cross
In the narrow, winding streets of the city centre, pharmacies can sometimes blend into the historic facades. They are always marked by a distinct, often animated or illuminated, green cross sign. If you are in a rush, look for this symbol rather than relying on Google Maps, as the map pin might be slightly off in pedestrianized zones.

Ask About Generic Brands
Spain is a strong proponent of generic medications (medicamentos genéricos). If a pharmacist offers you a generic version of a brand-name drug you requested, it is strictly regulated and contains the exact same active ingredients. Opting for the generic version is often significantly cheaper and is standard practice for locals.
