Nestled along the Alsace Wine Route, Colmar is often celebrated for its half-timbered houses and winding canals, but its culinary landscape tells an equally compelling story. For vegetarians, this story has shifted dramatically in recent years, moving far beyond a simple plate of tarte flambée or a side salad. The city now embraces a vibrant plant-based and vegetable-forward dining scene that rivals its meat-centric Alsatian traditions.
Whether you are strolling through La Petite Venise or exploring the markets near the Unterlinden Museum, you will find an array of options that celebrate fresh, local produce. From upscale bistros reimagining French classics to cozy cafés specializing in organic bowls, Colmar offers a surprising depth of flavor for those avoiding meat and fish. The key is knowing where to look, as some of the best spots are tucked away on cobblestone side streets.
This guide focuses on quality, atmosphere, and the authentic use of regional ingredients like Munster cheese, asparagus, and cabbage. We have prioritized establishments that offer dedicated vegetarian menus or demonstrate a genuine commitment to meat-free cooking, rather than simply offering a single token dish. You will find everything from casual lunch spots perfect for a quick refuel to elegant dining rooms suited for a romantic evening.
While traditional Alsatian cuisine is notoriously heavy on pork and foie gras, a new wave of chefs is proving that the region’s fertile soil yields incredible vegetarian potential. Expect to see dishes featuring spaetzle, forest mushrooms, and creamy sauces that honor the local terroir without compromising on taste. Even classic desserts like kouglof provide a sweet ending that is naturally meat-free.
Because Colmar is a compact city, you can easily walk between these restaurants, making it simple to plan a full day of culinary exploration. Many of these venues also boast excellent selections of Alsace wines, which pair beautifully with vegetable-centric plates. Remember that reservations are highly recommended, especially during the famous Christmas markets and summer tourist season.
To help you navigate the best of the city’s green gastronomy, we have curated a list of the top spots that consistently impress locals and travelers alike. Here is where you should book a table for an unforgettable vegetarian meal in Colmar.

Absolutely recommend this restaurant.
Literally just off the beaten path and mêlée of the centre of Colmar. This is a beautiful restaurant with a good mixed choice of vegetarian and meat dishes.
Service was amazing and very reasonably priced. Worth a visit

Great food. Great service. Was finally able to try one of the tartes as they offered a gluten free friendly version. Also offered a gluten free bun and several gf dessert options.

An amazing restaurant, they speak a lot languages and the menu is digital via QR code. The food is good and doesn’t take that long. There is a lot to choose from. Amazing vegan meals and choices available even for the drinks. The ambiance is great and very serene. A good place for friends, colleagues and family… The guy who served us was awesomely nice and very friendly spoke Spanish too. I was impressed by the design of the washroom! Very innovative. Everything was on point. I definitely recommend

We went to "La Cour des Anges" on a saturday afternoon, during the X-mas period. It's probably the busiest period, so get ready to be waiting a bit before getting seated. However, it is well worth it.
We have been welcomed by the chef de salle, a loud, energetic, and friendly man.
The restaurant is small, cute, and lively; a bit of Italian style. We liked it!
We took 4 "tartes flambées"; 2 standards & 2 vegans. All were great: it was the best of the one we have tried in Alsace. There was a lot of effort in the vegan ones as well. Top notch!
The restaurant offers many deserts made by a local artisan in Colmar. Those were fabulous.
We highly recommend this place. The food was great, and the service was fast and friendly and venue charming. Price wise, it seemed very reasonable and completely worth the experience.

They offer at least one vegan option in each category (entrée, plats, dessert) and it's the only restaurant in both Colmar and Strasbourg which has a vegan tarte flambée (flammkuchen)! I highly recommend it and the staff is very kind

This was one of the more charming restaurants and delicious meals I've had through my excursion through Alsace. Our host/waiter greeting us with a worried warning that this was a vegetarian establishment, which we were all to happy to reply to with a nod and a warm smile.
A simple set menu for my wife and I. I opted for the salade verte (a mix of tender lettuces, peas, dill, dried fruits, tomatoes, and a lemon vinaigrette), while she had the chilled curried lental soup. Both were a satisfyingly fresh reprieve from the oppresively heavy Alsacien cuisine we've dined on so far.
The main was a risotto consisting of leeks, dill, hazlenuts, and zuchinni. The plate rim garnished with szechuan peppercorn was an unexpected, but ingenious surprise.
For dessert, a Linz tart, and an apricot cake. The Linz was jammy, with a crumbly, oat shortbred crust. A perfect blend of fruit sweetness and salty richness. The apracot cake contained an unciousness, paired with a satisfying acidity, finished with dried lavender. Neither was too sweet, and paired well with a cup of coffee.
The meal was reasonably priced, given its quality. The restaurant itself was an open, simple but cheery room adorned with sparse art and paper lanterns from the ceiling. The waiter and cook were lovely women that appeared to enjoy their work and rounded on the guests with warm interest.
This was genuinely my favorite dining experience of the trip so far. No, it wasn't a Michelin star estabilshment or haute cuisine one expects from a French dining experience, but it was authentic, welcoming, and good for the soul.

So happy we found this little gem! The food was excellent, the atmosphere cosy and the pot of tea came with cute cups and was nice to share. You can taste the familes authenticity in every course 🫶

This is a lovely, family-run and vegetarian-only, restaurant. The only way to make a reservation is to give them a call, there is no website or online reservation available.
There is a limited choice of dishes, based on the season and available ingredients. It's quite close to the popular "Little Venice" area, but in a different league when it comes to quality. We really liked the main course and dessert options. Service is very friendly and it's nice to see how multiple generations run this restaurant.
Looking forward to another visit!

We have lunch in their spot in the Indoor Market and it was totally a success. We eat for a very reasonable price considering where it was and the great quality. The Black burger was delicious and my friend was completely full with today's meal and soup! We really recommend this place.

10:30 am, not a single other customer in sight, but they rudely tell us we cannot sit to eat the hot meal we purchased from them because I guess we didn't order a "table qualifying" item. The food was ok but bland. If they weren't so horribly rude I'd probably give the food 3 stars.

The service is good. The Tiramisu is a big lie - there is nothing that would remind tiramisu in their dessert. Very upsetting.
Option to eat when there is no access to restaurants due to a high demand

i was at their location in the marche couvert colmar. the food was ok, but at the end, they were very generous with putting extra stuff on our check (we were 2 people, ordered one dish and one bier each, spotting the extra items on the check wasn’t too hard. we sorted it out in the end, but you should be careful with them 🙂

My wife and I had our last meal in Colmar here. It was the perfect way to finish an amazing stay. The food was tremendous - extremely high quality and filling. The wine list was fantastic too. Service was so good, each and every server was helpful and you could tell by the amount of locals there that the restaurant was held in high regard. Definitely recommended.
Annabella Weisl★★★☆☆
The dinner at L’Arpège was, by a wide margin, the worst dining experience I have had in the last few years. Across the board, the food quality, service, and interior decoration were remarkably lacking, falling far below the standard expected of a restaurant in a city known for its great cuisine, like Colmar.
Culinary Failures:
The most significant issues were with the dishes, which displayed multiple basic flaws:
The bread served was doughy and had a strikingly sour, unpleasant aftertaste.
Starter - Pomponnette: The flavors in this dish—crab meat surrounded by smoked salmon, sweet mustard, curry sauce, and herring roe—were profoundly unbalanced. Both the salmon and crab meat had an unpleasant bitter note, and the accompanying sauce was surprisingly bland. We were unable to finish the dish. The roasted walnuts on our other starter did not taste fresh.
I noted with confusion that diners at an opposite table were constantly salting their food, a concern I quickly understood upon tasting our own dishes.
Main Course - Black Hen of Moselle: This dish lacked the sophistication one would expect. The meat itself was not juicy, and the promised foie gras flakes were not noticeable. Most striking was the overpowering and persistent aroma of the accompanying mushrooms, which stayed uncomfortably long in the mouth and raised questions about its preparation.
Unattentive Service:
The service was inattentive, hectic, and generally failed to meet minimum expectations. There was a distinct lack of engagement, including the critical failure of the staff to explain the dishes when served.
A specific lack of professionalism was observed when the waiter cleared our unfinished Pomponnette starter, making no remark and asking no question about the significant amount of food left on the plate. Separately, staff began cleaning a nearby table and then abruptly stopped, leaving a cleaning cloth as inappropriate "decoration" on the table.
Interior and Atmosphere:
The interior design was jarring and haphazard, lacking any sense of charming or quirky curation. The objects—such as plaster Madonnas positioned next to wine bottles and golden hedgehogs—appeared to be an arbitrary collection of discarded items placed onto the restaurant's shelves. This random and unappealing décor contributed to a deeply disappointing overall atmosphere.
Heather Morden★★★★★
Outstanding from the moment we sat down! Such a beautiful restaurant! We made a reservation 3 weeks in advance from Canada and I’m glad we did. We requested outdoor seating and it was lovely! The staff was very friendly and explained the menu perfectly! We had the Menu du Jour entrée,plat and dessert.
I choose the vegetarian option and my husband chose the fish option but with the vegetarian soup. The presentation and taste was outstanding for every dish and an amazing presentation!! One of our favourite meals of the trip! We can see why it is rated so highly! There is a lot of thought and passion involved in their food!
Thank you from Canada! We enjoyed our experience very much! The price is incredible for what you get!

We had dinner at this restaurant and were absolutely delighted! The atmosphere is cozy and well-designed, the staff are friendly and professional. The dishes were excellent, made with high-quality ingredients, and the wine selection was impressive. I’m vegetarian and I had no problem finding delicious vegetarian options! A truly enjoyable experience, we’ll definitely be back!

We hired Florence to cater a meal for 70 people for a wedding anniversary. It was important to us that the meal be prepared with local, fresh, organic, and seasonal produce. We had a Greek theme for the event. Florence listened carefully to our wishes and offered us several recipe suggestions. We opted for a vegetarian meal. All her dishes were delicious and perfectly seasoned.
On the day itself, Florence and her service team were punctual, friendly, efficient, and readily available. The meal went very well, and the portions were generous. We were delighted with the service.

A huge thank you to Florence for her expertise; our guests were delighted. This opening was a resounding success thanks to your work. The freshness of the ingredients allowed our taste buds to experience an explosion of flavor.
Thank you so much, Florence. I recommend her 400%!

We were absolutely delighted with this caterer at the opening of our premises in Bernardswiller. Their work was meticulous, beautifully presented, and eco-friendly (returnable packaging). The buffet they offered was simply delicious, both the savory and sweet options. The products were fresh and wholesome, and the creations were original, with a strong emphasis on plant-based cuisine.

We were in excellent hands from start to finish. Florence guided us with flexibility, offering helpful advice and adapting her services to our wishes right up to the last minute!

Probably the best restaurant in Colmar!
We got a table inside, with very comfortable chairs, and later the waitress offered a table outside. We chose to sit inside. The size of the restaurant fit perfectly with the amount of guests (it was half full) All the tables would be nice to sit at. There was perfect calming music, and the staff was nice. Atmosphere 5/5.
The menu was perfect, with probably around 12 dishes, it was easy to choose and they specialize in each dish. We got the Côte de boeuf pour personnes 2 (1 kg) and we split it between 1 adult and 2 kids, which was perfect. We could even choose from rare to well done or cooked. We ordered medium. I also ordered the SIROP À L'EAU with peach taste. We got the drinks almost right away, and waited 25 minutes for the food. That was the best steak I have ever tasted in my life, highly highly++ recommended. It came with crispy fries and pepper and bearnaise sauce. Both were very good. The beef was 20/10, best beef ever. The drink was fresh and sweet, and I'd rate it 9/10 and was the perfect size, I finished it exactly when I was done with my food. Probably because the food was so good, I forgot about the drink. Look no further than this review, and choose this restaurant. Food 5/5.
And then the price is very good for the food. Could have doubled the price, and I would still eat here. It cost a little under €80 for the steak and it was cheaper than other food on the menu, when we split it between 3 people. The waitress was very nice and understood English well, so we could speak with her without problems. Service 5/5
Not to mention the dessert, best chocolate fondant I have ever tasted, like all the other food, of course. I finished it in record time, I think It was like two minutes or something, but very good and the mealty inside was warm and incredibly good. We also got whipped cream and strawberries with the dessert, which was very fresh. Best dessert in the world 11/10
There is much more good to this resturant, but nobody would see the review if it was longer than this one.

Prioritize this for dinner in Colmar! The food was 10/10, absolutely incredible. We had the onion tart and burrata appetizer (pictured), the lamb with pasta (gnocchi) and salmon for entrees (not pictured), and the fondant de chocolat for dessert. Everything was “oh my gosh this is SO GOOD” worthy. Highly recommend!!

Ridiculously delicious food! One of my favourite meals on our whole trip to Europe. The salmon was cooked perfectly with the most delicious sauce and veggies, the goat cheese salad was amazing and so was the vegetarian Ethiopian plate.

We had a really great dinner at Savanna! I had the lamb and my wife had the salmon and both dishes were absolutely delicious and generous. We also shared the delicious chocolate fondant with 2 balls of vanilla ice cream. The drinks (beer and Alsace red wine) were excellent too.

Spectacular food, generous portions and warm service. My wife, children and I ended up coming here three times and it became one of the highlights of our holidays in Alsace. The burrata is the best I have ever tried!

Must visit when you are in Colmar. The flammkuchen is amazing, I had the strudel version one night and the original the next day for lunch. I did not reserve a space but it is a busy little spot. The hostess lady is one of the best for two reasons. One she remembered my drink order from the night before and secondly her interaction with guests especially speaking to Japanese tourists in their own language and seeing their amazed reactions was great to see. Definitely will be back next time in Colmar.

Tried Flambe for the first time here. We stayed 2 nights in Colmar and came for dinner each day 🙂 the food is great and the restaurant was always 90% full! Don't be fooled by the tickness of the flambe! Even if thin, it is very consistent! We bought 1 per person and it was great!
The personal are also extremely nice and welcoming!
Highly recommend!

Make reservations here! It is a very small place with an unassuming exterior (no tables lining the street, etc) but seems it is always full - we went in the evening and had to reserve for the next day. We’re here in June and they have two dinner seatings - at 7 and 9pm. They only have tartes flambées on their menu and it was the best I’ve had in Alcase! Favorite - the “Basilic”!

If you are looking for a Tarte Flambee then this is the place you need to try. Reservations are almost required because this location gets booked up in advance almost every night. It is small but the staff is friendly and the food and drinks are delicious! Worth the trip!

Looking for a flamkuchen ? look no more, you found the place to be.
If you like a bite in a not overpriced, overhyped place, go here, the owner is very friendly and better yet the flamkuchen is pretty amazing. And the beer is cold too!
Tip of the day, we saw two people ordering one at a time and share … looked like a great idea instead of ordering two if you are with someone. We found out too late, but next time we will go for the “share kuchen” as well!

Amazing restaurant.
Lovely ambiance to the dining area. The opening hours are ridiculously narrow, so plan accordingly .
The restaurant has a fixed menu and similar fixed wine options … so if you like al la cart dining this is not for you … move on with no regrets. If you do want to enjoy a chef and sommelier doing what they believe in, then these guys are well worth visiting.
To be honest this is an extraordinary good restaurant and should be visited if you want to taste amazing food

My husband and I had dinner at this lovely, cosy restaurant and had a truly wonderful experience. The staff were incredibly friendly, welcoming, and attentive. The food was outstanding, and we enjoyed the excellent selection of wines from their own vineyard.

I have truly found a place that creates and makes food with love and passion. Live food is what I called the meal I had at Cuit Lu Cru . Paula who took our order was kind and helpful who spoke fluent English and explained the menu in detail and then ..... Magic happened when they brought my dish which was as simple as soup and a salad but here is the catch , it was not only a soup and salad but it was an experience of multi flavors of different vegetables and fresh salads submerged in fresh dressings that leaves you wondering... What is in the sauce that brought a smile to my face . The desert was the final touch , No sugar No additives but still made my heart pound of happiness. Well done . Merci

As vegetarian, you don't have much choices in France, a restaurant specially offering vegetarian meals is just nice.
However, the Tagine was pretty disappointing, it's just a handful of vegetables in tomato souce for 18€ - for that price I expected more complexity or 8€ less..
All in all, okay food but overpriced.
Service could be more attentive, but was always friendly.

The food was amazing! The everything has flavour to it, the spice, the vegetables, the soup everything. You can taste the flavours and how they compliment each other. The tea! I'm not a tea person but this tea was delicious 😋
We went back...of course! Again, the service was outstanding and the ambiance takes you from France to Morocco. The food is too good! My mother and I ordered different dishes so we could have the best of both worlds and share. The flavours when hit your tongue, are like a dance party. Dad relived the expereince again by ordering the same meal as the day before. We can't highly recommend this family owned restaurant enough. From Australia 🇦🇺 ♥️

We arrived at 18:30 right at the time they opened, but the pizza was already "sold out"... that was disappointing. The Tajines that we ordered were absolutely delicious. Just make sure to order enough bread with it cause the portions are a bit on the small side.
Then there was the bill, it might be our fault for not checking it properly when we were there, but we noticed afterwards that we were billed 8 mineral waters, €4 each, while we only had one.
So all in all, not the experience that we expected.

Lovely restaurant in the centre of Colmar with very tasty authentic Moroccan food. The couscous and the tajin were delicious as well as the lentil soup. The staff were very friendly but the only problem was the restaurant's policy of charging extra for extra plate. We were a big group with 3 children so it wouldn't have made sense for everyone to get their own portion so we wanted to share. The owner said that if she were to give us extra plates to put the food on, she'd charge us the price of a full new portion. This is simply absurd in my opinion. Nevertheless, it was still overall a pleasant experience as the food, the music and the vibe at the restaurant were nice

We had the chicken and olive tangine. It was absolutely delicious. The flavors were amazing and permeated the chicken and carrots. Definitely would eat here again. The waiters were warm and friendly.

Highly recommended for all visitors who wants to try authentic French food in Colmar. Friendly service, fantastic food and most importantly, a speak friendly place to enjoy the medieval houses nearby.
We order the 3-dish dinner set and loved the Magret de canard with cherry, miso and aubergine. The best dish in my entire trip so far.
Advance reservation is preferable to secure a place for yourself. Don’t miss this eatery!

The food was absolutely exceptional and the service was spot on from start to finish. Without a doubt my favourite spot in Colmar. I can’t wait to come back!

Small family owned place where we had a pleasant time. The wine explanation we got was more than elaborate. Definitely a place we would love to visit every month, unfortunately we live three hours away..
we were sure to ask beforehand if our well behaved dog was welcome and he had a great time as well.

Essential Tips for Dining Vegetarian in Colmar
While Colmar is increasingly accommodating, navigating the local food culture with a vegetarian diet requires a bit of local knowledge. Alsatian culinary traditions are deeply rooted in charcuterie, meaning that even seemingly safe dishes can contain hidden meat products like lardons or meat-based stocks. By following a few strategic guidelines, you can ensure a stress-free and delicious experience that respects both your dietary needs and the local customs.
1. Learn the French terminology.
Knowing how to communicate your needs in French goes a long way, especially in smaller bistros. Learn the phrase "Je suis végétarien(ne)" (I am vegetarian) and "Sans viande ni poisson" (without meat or fish). Be aware that "lardons" (bacon bits) are often added to salads and tarts, so always ask if a dish contains them, even if they aren’t listed on the menu.
2. Look beyond the "vegetarian" label.
Some of the best meat-free meals in Colmar are found on menus that don’t explicitly advertise as vegetarian. Look for side dishes like gratin dauphinois, spaetzle, or seasonal asparagus. You can often build a fantastic meal by combining several entrées or side dishes, which allows you to taste a wider variety of Alsatian flavors.
3. Beware of traditional tarts and soups.
The classic Tarte à l’oignon (onion tart) often contains lardons, and vegetable soups are frequently made with chicken or beef stock. Always ask the server specifically if the soup base is vegetable ("bouillon de légumes"). If they are unsure, it is safer to choose a dish that is visibly fresh, such as a composed salad or a grain bowl.
4. Time your visit with the market.
Colmar’s covered market (Marché Couvert) is a fantastic resource for vegetarians. If you are staying in accommodation with a kitchen, or simply want a high-quality picnic, visit the local vendors selling fresh cheeses, breads, fruits, and vegetables. This is an excellent way to experience the region’s produce directly and save money on dining out.
5. Embrace the cheese culture.
If you are a lacto-vegetarian, you are in luck. Alsace produces some of France’s most distinctive cheeses, most notably Munster. While it has a strong aroma, it is a delicious local specialty that pairs perfectly with potatoes and cumin. Many restaurants feature cheese-based dishes that are naturally meat-free and deeply satisfying.
6. Reserve ahead and mention your diet.
Colmar’s best restaurants are small and fill up quickly. When booking a table, particularly for dinner, mention that you are vegetarian. This allows the kitchen to prepare something special or advise you on the best options for that evening. Chefs appreciate the heads-up and are usually happy to accommodate with a creative off-menu dish.
Colmar proves that you do not need to sacrifice culinary tradition to enjoy a vegetarian lifestyle. The city’s food scene is evolving, blending the rich agricultural heritage of the Alsace region with a modern, health-conscious approach to dining. Whether you are indulging in a creamy cheese dish or a fresh, colorful salad, you are participating in a new chapter of Alsatian gastronomy.
As you wander through the fairy-tale streets, let your taste buds guide you to these welcoming establishments. With a little planning and an adventurous spirit, your vegetarian journey through Colmar will be just as memorable as the stunning architecture that surrounds you.
