Granada is a city that refuses to be rushed. Beneath the shadow of the Alhambra and the snow-capped Sierra Nevada, the narrow cobblestone streets of the Albayzín and the bustling plazas of the center hold centuries of culinary history. It is one of the last bastions in Spain where the art of the complimentary "tapa" remains sacred, turning a simple drink into a full meal. But beyond the free snacks, the city boasts a deep-rooted gastronomic identity shaped by Moorish influence, monastic traditions, and the fertile lands of the Vega.
For the traveler, eating in Granada is not merely about sustenance; it is a cultural immersion. You can trace the history of Al-Andalus through a single spoonful of spiced soup or understand the region’s geography by tasting the wild game from the mountains alongside vegetables from the coast. The challenge, however, is navigating the noise. In a city filled with tourist traps serving microwaved paella, finding the genuine article requires local knowledge.
This guide is designed to cut through the clutter. We have walked the streets, spoken to the owners, and sat at the worn wooden bars to curate a list that prioritizes authenticity over trend. Whether you are seeking a rustic taverna that has served flamenco singers for decades or a family-run establishment where the recipe hasn’t changed in a hundred years, we have you covered.
The following selection focuses on "traditional" dining. This means establishments that respect the seasons, use local produce, and maintain the soul of Granadan cooking. These are places where the crockery might not match, the wine list is often written on a chalkboard, and the atmosphere is loud, warm, and utterly unpretentious.
You will find no fusion experiments or deconstructed tapas here. Instead, expect slow-cooked stews, perfectly fried fish, Iberian pork, and the distinct, earthy flavor of local olive oil. We have prioritized restaurants that offer value for money and a genuine sense of place, ensuring that your memory of Granada is tied to its flavors long after you leave.
Before we dive into the specific recommendations, remember that dining times in Granada are later than in much of Europe. Lunch typically begins at 1:30 PM and dinner rarely starts before 8:30 PM. Arrive early or be prepared to wait, as the best traditional spots are small and do not usually take reservations for the first seating.

Food was delicious and service was excellent! We came early and let us sit in the shade. The food is worth waiting for. The octopus and oxtail was well worth our trip. Didn’t have any of the mother in law’s croquettes unfortunately but opted for cod as per Marco’s recommendation - was really good! Overall would recommend and bring my family and friends here thank you!

Came to Europe for a couple of weeks through France (Paris, Lyon) and Spain (Madrid, Valencia, Granada). We stopped by this restaurant in Granada because we had been hunting for highly rated and recommended restaurants online. This was one of the best we've been to.
We highly recommend the chicken croquettes. We also ordered the albondigas and the octopus - the flavor and texture of both were excellent.
Additionally, the atmosphere is really welcoming. Julio and his chef are both nice and friendly people. The food was amazing and the price was very affordable. This is one of the places I hope to visit again and will remember from our vacation!

Booked ahead as advised by other reviewers. Intimate dining experience, a few outdoor seating available and mostly inside. The restaurant was efficiently ran by Julio and the chef. Our dishes were made fresh. All of which we enjoyed.
We liked the Tinto verano and ordered it twice. The tomato salad was a nice touch with warm bread. The iberico ham was delish. The codillo and rabo de toro were both wonderful and full of flavours. The oxtail was tender and fell off the bone as it should. The pulpo looked great but we had it the day before so we ordered other things. We also added the croquetas (chicken and fish) - they were great too but I was already too full to enjoy it.
Great find! Glad we dined here. Gracias!

Great dinner choice, really good quality ingredients, friendly staff, good local wine. Marcelo even with the a busy night handled the service pretty well. Chef have the passion for cooking and so careful with the clients

Highly recommend this beautiful homely restaurant in Granada. Our server Julio was able to communicate with us what was popular on the menu, we ordered the Rabo de toro (oxtail), bacalao con pisto de verdura (cod with ratatouille) and pulpo a la gallega (octopus). All of the dishes were cooked to perfection and seasoned perfectly. I found the dishes here to be superior to most of the tapas/dishes I’ve tried in Spain. The service was absolutely excellent, we were able to score a table because we came right at opening but Julio was turning away most tables afterwards because they were fully booked. I highly recommend trying this place as a certified food lover.

We had a fantastic dinner at La Telefónica and would definitely recommend it!
The food was absolutely delicious and the portions were very generous — definitely come hungry! The ribs were huge, beautifully cooked, tender and full of flavour. Everything we tried was really tasty, and we especially loved the little surprise of getting a free tapa with our first drink. Such a nice Spanish touch and a great way to start the meal.
The atmosphere is warm and lively, and the restaurant itself has lots of character. What made the evening even better was the service. Fernando Iluna looked after us and was absolutely wonderful — friendly, welcoming, attentive and genuinely enthusiastic. He made us feel very comfortable, gave us great service throughout the evening and added a lot to the whole experience.
We also really appreciated the little drink at the end of the meal — a lovely finishing touch.
Great food, huge portions, good atmosphere and excellent hospitality. Special thanks again to Fernando Iluna for making our dinner so enjoyable. We would happily come back next time we’re in Granada!

Exceptional food! Free tapa with the drinks as in most places in Granada. Even though we didnt have a reservation they accommodated us within 20 mins on a busy day. Shoutout to our server Luna for making the dinner that much better:)

Fantastic lunch at La Telefónica. We enjoyed wonderful Andalusian specialties—torreznos, cogollos enteros, and costillar ibérico. Everything was absolutely delicious and beautifully presented. The online menu is very helpful, with photos and clear allergen information. Fernando provided excellent, friendly service and great recommendations. Very reasonable prices. Highly recommended! 😋😋😋

Kind of lucky to get in for an early dinner and we saw several people get turned away so I recommend reservations. The atmosphere is so darn nice and intimate. The staff and service is excellent, professional and friendly.
The food was mostly really good to excellent with a few misses. Artichoke seemed to lack just a bit of flavor, Octopus the same and the desserts also lacked some extra oomph but we had 4 other dishes that were home runs and were outstanding. The Cod was one example along with another fish and you can tell the owners put a lot of effort in creating a memorable place.

Baby boom quite interesting taste it's even quite good with fried egg. Flamenquín casero without any wow effect - it reminds Cordon bleu a little bit (but it's pork not chicken) or de volaille (but cordon bleu and de volaille are much better. Starter free tapas salad with tuna and potatoes was very good. I'd said that it was quite propoer food but I haven't been impressed very much.Service was very good and polite.

The friendly staff made us feel very welcome. Though we tried to brush up on Spanish for this trip, the English menu was handy. We sat outside on the terrace. The complimentary tapas with our first wine was roast pork that was really tender and juicy. Then we moved on to the black rice with seafood. The flavors didn't pop as much as I expected, but was still satisfying and tasty. The tapas that came with the next glass of wine was a Spanish omelette, which was pure heaven. In all, a thoroughly enjoyable meal.

I had high expectations after reading amazing reviews, but sadly I didnt agree.
For a starter we shared the three croquettes, this was the highlight of the meal. I really loved the interesting blends of black pudding with onion, and the cauliflower white chocolate was a new flavor to me.
For our entrees, my boyfriend got the guacamole toast with chicken, and I got the black rice after the high reviews. Portions were absolutely huge. I thought it as good, but nothing that stood out to me in terms of paella, I’ve definitely had much better than this.
The menu is all over the place honestly. I came here looking for an authentic food experience, authentic is in the name after all, right? But to serve poke bowls (Japanese), wok noodles (Chinese), it seemed strange to have these Asian flavors randomly thrown in the menu. I wouldn’t say it’s fusion, that requires blending two flavors together. I just didn’t like the overall menu options honestly, don’t get the hype. Definitely one of the heavier meals and more forgettable ones.

We had an amazing dinner here. The best paella in town! Highly recommend!. We also ordered the patatas Bravas, croquetas, salad, and a delicious tarta Santiago for dessert! Five stars are simply not enough for this restaurant that welcomed us warmly on a busy weekend walk-in. The food was already excellent, paired with great wine, but the service truly made the experience unforgettable.
In addition to the dishes we ordered, we were generously treated to several tapas and even a complimentary Kahlúa milk cocktail. Our server, Eduard, managed the entire dining room with professionalism while still making us feel genuinely cared for. Before we left, he even recommended a wonderful gelateria and a great churros spot for breakfast.
If we had the chance, we would happily come here every evening. Such a warm and comforting place.

Had a wonderful Sunday lunch here!!! We didn't regret a single dish here: sirloin was excellent, croquettes were HUGE and delicious, calamari was perfectly fried and not overly salty, and eggs with ham and potatoes were our favorite. Shout out to Romi for being a wonderful hostess (and advising us that we were over-ordering like typical tourists)!

No doubt the best steak we have eaten in Spain by far! We reserved a table for 2 and got our plates served in less than 15 minutes after ordering. The restaurant is fairly small but that's what makes it authentic and truly south Spanish. We ordered the entrecot and the solomillo which were both very fairly priced (24.90€ & 26.90€) and truly tasty. Recommend to all steak lovers in the area!

My partner and I went here for dinner as our host recommended it for tapas. We were seated quickly and all the servers were kind. We ordered three dishes (fried eggplant with honey, a seafood dish mix, and pasta with cheese and spinach). These all arrived at the same time. The fried eggplant was good but the other two dishes weren’t. The spinach pasta dish arrived very very cold like it was taken out of the fridge and the seafood was lukewarm. We ended up asking the server if the spinach pasta dish was supposed to be served cold (it wasn’t). Once it was reheated it was 10x better. I only gave the food one star because it was served ice cold and the seafood was room temperature and not flavorful at all (tasted like seafood water). I unfortunately would not recommend, there are tons of other restaurants that serve better food.

From the exceptional service to the outstanding food, everything was absolutely impeccable. We loved it so much that we returned the very next night! This spot was highly recommended to us for our trip and we’re glad we went! The service is exceptional. They were attentive, kind and answered all our questions patiently .
Since we went for lunch we tried the Menu del dia which is very affordable and the quantity is very generous.
We tried the house red and white wine which were lovely and came with a free tapa- squid ink rice with aioli- it was so good that we planned to come back another day just to get a full portion of it.
For first course the Gazpacho was delicious ! Perfect with some bread on the side .
For the second course we tried their fish with vegetables- it was slightly underwhelming and lacked depth in flavour. The meatballs with fries were a better choice! The sauce was very rich and delicious.
For dessert we tried their flan and brownie , both served with whipped cream. The perfect end to our meal.
Would definitely recommend it when in Granada.

We had an excellent experience at los Manueles. Juan was our server and was very attentive. We came here for a late afternoon tapas and drinks. The food was delicious and the patio was a great place to relax. We had a great time and would highly recommend this restaurant to those visiting Grenada.

Los Manueles is truly a culinary experience. The quality of the food was superb, and the service was prompt and attentive—every recommendation was spot on.
Nereida welcomed us with great warmth and courtesy, offering excellent suggestions. We started with the pimientos del piquillo rellenos de rabo de toro, and it was absolutely out of this world. Thank you, Nereida!
For our main course, we had the solomillo de ternera, which was perfectly cooked and full of flavor. To finish, we enjoyed a coulant de chocolate con helado de vainilla—a delicious ending to an outstanding meal.
Pablo, who took care of us throughout the meal, was amazing. I also noticed how hard the entire staff works—they are efficient, attentive, and genuinely focused on making sure every guest has a great experience.
Highly recommended if you’re visiting Granada. So far, the best dining experience we’ve had here.

What a find. Granada used to be very traditional and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that, but to see the traditional brought up a peg is excellent. Great selection of dishes, with good produce and a lot of love from the kitchen, delivers an excellent experience. You know you’re in the right place when the bread they serve as standard is warm and tastes really good, and you haven’t started on the Mains yet! Cozy tables, terrace also available, and all in the centre of Granada. This will definitely be one of our regular places to eat at going forward for sure.

Such a lovely cosy restaurant. A little on the pricy side, but the food was excellent! The "Patatas Pimienta Rosa" were particularly great! The service was also excellent, I wish I had got the waitor's name because such a happy, helpful & positive waitor is hard to come by & he is a credit to the restaurant! A really great experience overall & the perfect setting for a cute dinner spot! We will definitely be back! Thank you 😊

Incredible meal - everything we ordered was out of this world. Franky’s service was energetic and responsive. Even sitting outside on a hot night was a vibe (spoiler they have misters). Highly recommend the cannelloni, Artechole flowers, beef cheek and dry rice. All bloody delicious!

This is a great restaurant!
The first thing you notice coming in is the excellent service, everyone was friendly and accommodating. We came with our young child and the whole team was very helpful and understanding. The service was also fast and efficient, and food came out fairly quickly.
The food was top notch. We’ve traveled Spain extensively and this is one of the top seafood rice dishes we’ve had (we got the squid ink one). The seafood is well mixed into rice and the flavours and textures blend well together. The artichoke and grilled squid were also excellent. I am a huge fan of artichoke and too often restaurants make it under seasoned/bland/undercooked. The way they make the artichoke here is unique - the Parmesan is not overwhelming and the romesco added a perfect amount of acidity to it. Overall the food was seasoned and garnished, had a unique mix of flavours, and great presentation. They were also accommodating of an allergy and double checked each item with the kitchen to make sure it was safe. This is what I imagined a top Andalusian restaurant should taste like.
Thank you!!

We got a table for lunch. They have good variety of food. The service was fine compared to street restaurants. The food was really good. What we didn't like we ordered one dish and they didnt inform us it was not available. Until they served the others so we ended up with one person without food.

Amazing Moroccan restaurant with authentic flavors and great hospitality. We ordered chicken and lamb skewers, beef kefta, hummus, and traditional Moroccan tea — everything was delicious and full of flavor. The service was also excellent, with very friendly and attentive staff.
The only downside for us was the price, as we found it a bit expensive for the quantity. Still, overall it was a very enjoyable experience and I would definitely recommend it!

Chicken skewers was a nice treat. Was not too keen on the rice they gave with it.
What destroyed the meal was the Meze. Lamb one I. Particular. The meat was somewhat soft. But the veg smelt. It was awful. A massive waste of money. It was horrible. Smelt like vomit. We actually left and got a pizza lol. Would not recommend this one unfortunately.

Love this restaurant!!!! After a few days in Granada, the fam and I wanted to eat something else other than tapas so Moroccan food won! The hummus, lamb tagine, veggie cous cous, tomato and red pepper dish were so delicious! Next time we’re in Granada, we will come back

This is good spot. The portions are smaller than what we’re used to in Spain, certainly for the price. Skip if on a budget. Otherwise the service is super attentive, the food is actually very tasty — we ordered the 6 skewers (chicken and lamb) and the humus. Only one pita bread and the portion of rice is rather small. I appreciated fewer carbs during dinner. The ambience is nice, the decor has a lot of Moroccan elements. Would recommend to someone taking a break from tapas.

El Orejas made our night in Granada unforgettable. We arrived late without a reservation, and the hostess kindly found us a table.
The food was outstanding, from a foamy tomato soup amuse-bouche and hot, fresh bread to the parpatana tuna and carrillera, both perfectly executed. The tuna was rich and cooked to perfection, while the carrillera was melt-in-your-mouth tender. It was like eating the clouds.
Even the Aperol spritz, though not on the menu, was the best I’ve ever had, better than in Italy. We ended with a chocolate coulant, the perfect finish.
What truly elevated the experience was the service. Valeri and Valeria were superstars—warm, attentive, and gracious. The blonde-ish server (we didn’t get her name) with glasses was equally wonderful!
We only wish we had discovered this place earlier in our trip. I would have loved to try their steaks. We’ll definitely be back on our next visit to Spain.

Our second ever visit to this restaurant and on both occasions the staff were fantastic. Something I will point out early on is that it was also the same staff, after a 10 month gap. In the catering industry staff move and change often, but it says a lot about a location if the staff stay for a long time.
I had the sausage starter and steak for a main. I then shared the cheesecake for two and every meal was fantastic. I asked for a medium well steak (I'm not precious about how it comes), but that should give you a rough idea of what it gets you here.
You won't be disappointed in this place, we love it and will return every time we're in Granada.

Our evening at El Orejas will be remembered almost entirely because of Esteven.
In many years of travel, truly exceptional service has become increasingly rare. Esteven embodied every quality one hopes for in a great professional: attentive without hovering, knowledgeable without pretension, calm under pressure, genuinely warm, and deeply invested in ensuring guests leave happy. Perhaps the restaurant is named El Orejas for a reason — Esteven certainly knows how to listen to his guests.
We had spent quite some time throughout Spain searching unsuccessfully for a proper Rabo de Toro. The moment Esteven described theirs, we immediately recognized it as the traditional preparation we had been hoping to find. Unfortunately, when we ordered, we were told they had just run out. Rather than simply apologizing and moving on, Esteven somehow managed to locate one final portion for us, which speaks volumes about both his professionalism and care.
The dish itself was magnificent: rich, thick sauce, deeply comforting flavors, and tender meat that melted effortlessly from the bone. Exactly as it should be.
The grilled vegetables were excellent, the beer cold and refreshing, and the entire meal thoroughly enjoyable. But it was Esteven who transformed a good dinner into a memorable evening. Restaurants may serve good food everywhere. Service at this level is far more difficult to find.

A special thank you to Matthaios for taking such great care of us and helping us choose the dishes. His recommendations were spot on and made the experience even more enjoyable.
Definitely one of the best dining experiences we had in Granada. Highly recommended!

Nice restaurant, very tastfull courses. Friendly staff and nice atmosphere. Best to reserve a table, but if you're lucky, you might be able to get a table. I was recommended this place and it was fantastic! I popped in on my own and went for the menu del dia - (Mon-Thurs) and had a mixed salad for starters and delicious big meatballs with hand cut chips in sauce. They then offer a coffee or dessert. Excellent value! What made it was the service. Brilliant and so friendly, they really took care of me and were kind and checked in on me. I felt very comfortable and content 😊
The place itself is light and fresh, very well air conditioned indoors (where I chose to be out of the sun for a while) and it has 2 terraces outside. 1 on the street in the sun and 1 covered with mist fans. When I arrived, I ordered a tinto de verano and recieved a tapa plate of really tasty rice with minced meat 😍
Great mixed menu and I highly recommend it.

This is a great location and nice, authentic Spanish restaurant. Nice outdoor seating. Food was really good. But the spicy beef tips were incredibly salty. The pumpkin meatballs were AMAZING! The waiters were very nice and spoke some English. We would return.

We just had our first meal in Granada and we choose this restaurant. The paella, croquettes and sangria were very good. Eva was exceptional. She was very kind to explain us everything we need, give us good suggestions and understand our needs. 🙂

Could be a confusing system- in order to get tapas, sit inside, There’s no separate tapas dedicated menu, u can refer to ‘para picars’ for typical tapas- for foreigners, but thanks to Carlos for being kind to explain the system for us and we enjoyed our dinner here. Foods were great. And remember that they will serve you free tapa whenever you order a drink. Better not to order too many dishes! xD

We could tell that this was a happening place just by the lunch line. Nice, modern interior with moderate noise level, we sat overlooking a small side street. Service was fast and friendly (English spoken to help my bad Spanish). We honestly ordered too much - we tried two croquettes, fried eggplant sticks with honey, and the pork paella (2 person min). All were outstanding. The place gets packed and can seem frenetic but that is pretty much all of downtown Granada. Stay in line, it was well worth the wait.

Read the reviews and decided to plan a visit during our trip to Granada. Made a reservation in advance!! That is key!!
Overall, superb experience!!!! It’s a bit of a walk uphill to get there from the city center. But, it’s worth it!!! Absolutely the best views of Alhambra!!! And the food…wow!!! Wonderful!!

Excellent food and impeccable service. Appetizers were delicious, plating was 👌🏽. My favourite was the free-range egg with boletus. It was creamy and sweet on the bottom. The foie on the sirloin steak tasted smokey. Meat main dishes were all melted in our mouth. My family and I didn’t get to taste the dessert as we were quite full. We keep it for our next visit.
Keep it up team Las Tomasas!

We were there with a group on a business trip. The resturant staff was very helpful seating everyone and helping the food and drinks rolling. All of our food was pre ordered so the was no wait with courses. All the food was amazing and drinks were delicious. We tried almost 10 different plates. This was my 3rd time at the resturant and the quality was spot on again.

Ideal place for lunch with a view! Went here purposely for the view of the Alhambra. Stunning! Was an early lunch, as soon as the restaurant opened and got lucky because this is a busy place. Nice table near the windows. The waiter was very helpful, deploying the shade so we were comfortable out of the sun yet with that vista of the castle. Food tasty, fresh, and pleasant to see. Wine list has excellent options to pair with whatever you order. Staff all helpful, knowledgeable, and courteous, always taking care of things with a smile. There are various rooms for dining. Best to make a reservation. I hope to return to enjoy another fine meal.

Excellent dinner with an excellent view. The portions were very big and fantastic food. We especially loved the duck rillettes and baby squid
How to Eat Like a Local: Essential Tips for Dining in Granada
Navigating the culinary landscape of Granada requires a slight shift in mindset, especially if you are accustomed to the dining habits of Northern Europe or North America. The system of tapas, the timing of meals, and the style of service can vary greatly from neighborhood to neighborhood. To ensure you get the most out of your experience at the restaurants listed above, and any others you might stumble upon, it is helpful to understand the unspoken rules of the table.
1. Embrace the Tapa Culture
In Granada, the tapa is a right, not a privilege. When you order a beer, a glass of wine, or a "tinto de verano" (red wine with lemon soda), a plate of food will arrive automatically. Do not expect to choose your tapa in most traditional bars; it is "la tapa del día" (the tapa of the day). The quality of the free tapa often reflects the quality of the kitchen, so if you like the free sample, consider ordering a "ración" (full portion) from the menu.
2. Order the Local Wine
Skip the international brands and look for wines from the province. Ask for a "verdejo" from the region or, better yet, a local red from the Contraviesa-Alpujarra area. The local bars often serve "calicasas" or "vino de la tierra" which is young, fruity, and incredibly cheap. It pairs perfectly with the heavy, meat-based traditional dishes of the region.
3. Look Beyond the Menu del Día
While the "Menú del Día" (Menu of the Day) is excellent value for lunch, it often features generic international fare designed for volume. To experience true Granadan cooking, order "a la carta" (from the menu). Look for specific local dishes such as "habas con jamón" (broad beans with ham), "papas a lo pobre" (poor man’s potatoes), or "remojón granadino" (an orange and cod salad).
4. Stand at the Bar
In traditional establishments, the prices often differ between the "terraza" (outdoor seating), the "mesa" (table), and the "barra" (the bar). Standing at the bar is not only the cheapest way to eat but also the most authentic. Here, you can watch the waiters shout orders, see the food being prepared, and chat with locals who are usually happy to recommend their favorite dish.
5. Timing is Everything
Granadinos eat late. If you arrive at a restaurant at 7:00 PM, you will likely be dining alone with the staff setting up. For lunch, aim for 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM. For dinner, 9:30 PM is the sweet spot. If you are hungry earlier, do what the locals do: have a "merienda" (afternoon snack) of a pastry or a small sandwich around 6:00 PM to tide you over.
The beauty of dining in Granada lies in its spontaneity. While this list provides a solid foundation of the best traditional restaurants, do not be afraid to wander down a side street in the Realejo or the lower Albayzín. Often, the most memorable meal is found in a nameless bar where an elderly owner serves a single, perfect stew that has been simmering since dawn.
Take your time, savor the olive oil, and appreciate the ritual of the sobremesa—the lingering conversation that follows a meal. In Granada, food is the thread that connects history, family, and community, and there is no better way to understand the city than by pulling up a chair and taking a bite.
