The culinary landscape of Reims is defined by more than its world-famous sparkling wine. As the unofficial capital of the Champagne region, this historic city houses a remarkable collection of traditional French kitchens that have preserved the gastronomic heritage of the Grand Est. For travelers seeking authenticity beyond the tourist trail, the local dining scene offers a deep dive into terroir-driven cooking, where recipes have been passed down through generations without compromise.
Finding a truly traditional meal in a city bustling with international visitors requires knowing where the locals reserve their Sunday lunches. The best establishments in Reims balance the formality of classic French service with the warmth of a family-run auberge. These are places where the sauce is reduced slowly, the bread is sourced from the local boulangerie, and the menu often changes with the seasons rather than the trends.
When exploring the culinary identity of Reims, one must look beyond the ubiquitous brasseries to discover the intimate bistrots and elegant dining rooms that define the city’s soul. The regional specialties here are hearty and unpretentious, featuring ingredients like lentils from Champagne, Rethel white pudding, and the famous biscuit rose. Paired with a carefully selected local grower champagne or a robust Burgundy, a meal in these institutions becomes a cultural experience.
The value of dining in a traditional restaurant in Reims lies in the attention to detail. You will notice the difference in the texture of a homemade pâté en croûte, the depth of a properly executed coq au vin, and the crispness of a perfectly baked tarte fine. These chefs respect the classical French repertoire, understanding that true luxury often lies in simplicity and the quality of the raw ingredients sourced from nearby markets.
For the discerning traveler, navigating the dining scene can be overwhelming, as the city boasts a high density of eateries per capita. However, distinguishing a genuine culinary landmark from a tourist trap requires insight into the local reputation, the consistency of the kitchen, and the integrity of the wine list. The most memorable meals are often found in unassuming locations, where the focus remains entirely on the plate and the glass.
To help you experience the authentic taste of the Champagne region, we have curated a selection of the finest addresses in the city. These restaurants represent the pinnacle of traditional French gastronomy in Reims, offering everything from rustic charm to refined elegance. Whether you are seeking a long, leisurely lunch or a romantic dinner, these tables promise a genuine connection to French culinary history.

What makes this place really special is that it’s run and managed by Jérôme himself, who also cooks everything on the menu- the food is absolutely delicious - authentic, traditional French cuisine!
The atmosphere is just as impressive. Jérôme has an incredible sense of style, and every detail in the restaurant is thoughtfully curated by him.
What made the experience unforgettable, though, was Jérôme himself. He is a truly warm and attentive host who clearly takes pride in making sure his guests feel welcome and looked after. At the end of our meal, he even gifted me a piece of his homemade savoury cake (“cake salé”), which was such a thoughtful and generous gesture.
I left feeling genuinely impressed and grateful for the experience. This is more than just a place to eat - it’s a place to connect, enjoy, and appreciate real passion for food and hospitality.
Thank you , Jérôme! We are definitely coming back 🙂

We arrived slightly late (by French standards!) for lunch so there was only space at the bar. Jolly host Jerome looked after us until we were the last ones there! We had terrine, chicken leg, pork cheek, a plate of cheese, damson tart, chocolate torte, multiple glasses of champagne and red wine, with a couple of coffees, too. Old school but the best school. Lovely lunch!!

Best food and dessert of my life. We started with a wonderful salad, chicken sausage and ratatouille and the best dessert- apricot cheesecake. The service was from the nicest man ever. According to other reviews he’s the one man show. So sweet and really did a great job serving everyone in the restaurant. We were pressed with time to catch the train and he gave us a Tupperware container for the dessert to go. The best experience ever. A definite repeat when we come back. Thank you very much!

This was the best meal I've had in France!!!
The owner was unbelievable. He not only serves, cooks but also entertains his guests. His server was also amazing. Helped me pair my lunch with a drink and with flair. The cheese bread that was brought out before my meal was perfect. It was light, airy and moist. The salmon was my main. Cooked to perfection. The rustic baked baby potatoes and puree of cauliflower, cabbage and celery paired beautifully. For dessert I had the flan... I dont even know how he could could be so talented. At first I thought the crust was too thick but I was wrong.
As a pastry chef myself I couldn't have anticipated the absolute perfection of my meal. He's a Picasso for your palate.
Bravo monsieur.
Can not recommend this restaurant enough!!!
Also Kayla was a Superb hostess❤️

I waited a bit to publish this. I went there many times. My mind is set : very good typical French home cuisine, nice wine and Champagne choice. People are here to enjoy a quiet atmosphere, Jérôme is a wonderful host. He does everything himself !
If you plan to go there on your way back from a visit to the cellars near by : book with a large advanced time schedule.
Looking forward to returning there soon.

Absolute gem of a place. It's rare thing to see super friendly and professional service in France because usually it's 50/50. Have had multiple visits and everyone is super friendly, professional and fast in service.
Would specifically bring out Clara because she really stood out in service. Thank you for making our experience wonderful.
And special Thanks to Thomas.

Great restaurant in Reims. We had dinner there and absolutely loved it! My first beouf a la tartar and it was delicious. And lots of salad came also with it, which was for me extra good news.
Staff is really friendly and helpful. Big thanks to the team!

We ate twice at the Sacrés Petits Coches in Reims, once at the beginning of our journey, and once at the end. Both times the service was friendly, prompt, and on point, and the food was excellent. It's the kind of food you would have eaten at a roadside Inn back in the day, local ingredients and solid "cuisine de tradition", no pretentious chefs in this kitchen. It was a perfect way to open and end our travels. I highly recommend.

A lovely evening: even though we booked late, our table was ready and waiting for us. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming. The food was excellent, especially the meat dishes (steak and roast chicken). The desserts were superb. A relaxed and cosy atmosphere.

We arrived here on a Tuesday night with a reservation, but were shown a table that was less than ideal. It was so hot & noisy inside that we decided to relocate to the terrace area. It was better. We shared a baked cheese with honey dish. Then our mains of pepper steak & honey glazed salmon were fine, but not impressive. The salad was very basic. It was an adequate meal.
Eerik Heijari★★★★★
Easy French dinner with very informal setting and relaxed atmosphere. Food was really good, especially the brisket and the ribs. Fries were excellent. Personally I would prefer actual mayonnaise or more rich sauce to accompany the ketchup. No reservation needed, just queue a bit and voila! Recommended😊
Louisa Moore★★★★☆
We were staying in Reims for a couple of nights while touring the nearby champagne houses and were searching for a local but hospitable place to eat dinner, and Le Tablier looked homey and welcoming so we decided to give it a try.
This is exactly the kind of brasserie you hope to stumble into in the middle of Reims. It's right on Place Drouet d'Erlon with a big, lively terrace facing the Subé fountain. That means it gives off great people-watching vibes, although in December it was too chilly to dine outside.
The atmosphere of the restaurant hits that sweet spot between cozy, rustic, and modern. It feels relaxed but still polished, like a place that knows what it's doing without trying too hard. The tables are packed too closely together, which was a nice change as to the European norm. We were able to enjoy our dinner and conversation without touching elbows with fellow guests. To be fair, we were dining at an "off" time, so it wasn't very busy. Your mileage may vary if you visit during the popular dinner hours.
The staff were genuinely welcoming, especially to foreign visitors, which honestly stands out by French standards. English menus were available, service was friendly and easygoing, and nothing felt rushed. We were greeted warmly by the host, who immediately started speaking to us in English (how do they ALWAYS KNOW?!). We still tried to speak some French to him, which he appreciated. I swear attempting to converse in the local language does wonders when you're a tourist in Europe!
The cocktail menu is extensive and creative, and we had some excellent cocktails along with a solid house wine (typical in France) that set me back a whopping 5 Euros LOL. My hubby's cocktail was beautifully presented and garnished with dried fruit, and it was nice and strong. Even the bread basket deserves a shout out for the simple, fresh, and very snackable crusty, sliced baguette.
Food-wise, everything was quite tasty. My snail-loving hubby said the escargots (9 Euros for a half dozen) were plump, garlicky, and perfectly done. He never, ever passes up the chance to order this dish whenever we are in France, and he really raved about these. I opted for the Salmon Amandine (24 Euros), which was served with a cider and mustard sauce and butter mashed potatoes. My fish was flavorful and well-cooked, and the portion was quite large. My husband went with a steak and potatoes dish, which he said was rich and satisfying. The potatoes were fried in what tasted like duck fat, and everything was well seasoned.
Even by American standards, the portions were huge. These are definitely generous brasserie-style plates, so much so that we skipped on dessert (and the selections sounded incredible). For escargots, salmon, beef, a cocktail, glass of wine, bottled water, and all that atmosphere, we paid about €80, which felt like a great deal for the quality and location. It's not cheap, but it's worth it.
I would definitely recommend Le Tablier to visitors in the area. It's a great choice for a casual, fun meal with tasty drinks right in the heart of Reims.

Friendly service and they have a very decent vegan burger on the menu! Bit too noisy for my liking today, seems to be some kind of festival going on, and they have a live band just outside the door with the PA cranked up to full volume!

Great find in the City Centre, as most restaurants in Reims are closed on Sunday afternoon. Friendly English speaking staff, who provided great service and were willing to help.
Food was much better than anticipated, as it looked very much like a typical “Tourist restaurant”.
Escargots were delicious, in just the right amount of garlic butter. Salmon Poke bowl for main course, with lots of chunks of delicious fresh salmon. My fellow diners also commented on the quality of their meals. The XXL Profiterole, really was huge. It was filled with ice cream and totally impossible to finish.
Highly recommend Le Gaulois and will definitely return next time I happen to be in Reims

Such a great place. The waitress we had was super from the beginning to the end. We got a nice booth even we were only two people. The food was superb. Onion soup was the best we have had in ages. So much taste, but not salty. The escargots, yummy, great flavor, perfectly made. And the beef cheeks, so tender, flavorful, but not overly salted. The meet just fell apart. We had a great time there, relaxing and laid back athmosphere. They didnt stress us, even we were finished. Had a good coffee at the end. Will definately go back everytime we are in Reims. We came back the next day, for the daily lunch. Roastbeef, gosh, so good. Service was just as good.
We have been there a again since i wrote my review. Everytime just as good as before. Super.

A highly recommended restaurant! Although, it appears a bit touristy, we had the best beef tartare, and the onion soup was also very good. The staff were polite, and the service was fast.

Just steps from the cathedral’s soaring spires, this charming bistro offers swift service, which is a welcome relief for visitors balancing sightseeing and lunch. The dishes arrive quickly, allowing you to enjoy a satisfying meal without feeling rushed. The food itself is genuinely delicious — from expertly seared meat to fresh seasonal vegetables, everything is fait à la maison, and each plate has clearly been prepared with care and flavour in mind. One thing to note: the venue is so popular that there is often a long queue outside, especially at peak lunch or dinner times. It’s definitely worth the wait, but arriving a bit earlier or booking ahead is a good idea.

Tout est fait maison, préparé avec passion, et à des tarifs qui restent plus que raisonnables. Cela devient suffisamment rare pour être souligné.
Merci pour votre travail, votre gentillesse et tous ces bons moments passés chez vous. Ne changez rien !

We have traveled to France from Japan to meet my sister in Reims and she introduced this place to us.
It was amazing! The menu is changing every week and it was a very sophisticated experience of trying the real French food in a relatively casual restaurant.
We enjoyed the atmosphere of the chef talking to the guests and it was so nice to feel their passion for the food. Hope to come again!

A brilliant local experience. The menu was a very simple chalkboard that changes daily according to available ingredients. Friday night offered 2 Entrees, 3 Plat, a cheese plate and 1 dessert. The food provided a clever blend of fresh ingredient flavours and was all-round excellent. The service was first class and available in English. We felt lucky that we found this wonderful dining experience.

World class. Not to impress the reader, BUT: I’ve eaten at several 3-star restaurants around the world and more 2 and 1 star restaurants than I can recall. This place deserves 1 star without question. Delicious food, every course, with subtle surprising flavors throughout. Feel like you’re at home, very friendly. And the price is a bargain frankly. Bravo!

Lovely Cosy Family run business!! The husband is the chef and his wife in the front. The food was 10/10. The flavours were next well, all food was cooked to perfection. My lamb was so juicy melted in my mouth and my partners cod dish was also cooked to perfection. They have a lovely cave style dining area.
Beth G★★★★★
The food is amazing ..... well above average and well priced!!!! If you make a reservation ( or get there early) go downstairs as the atmosphere is like a cave (white brick). The girl who received us was a bit aloof. However the other server and the main server (maybe owner) were so over the top wonderful!!!!! Atmosphere, culinary excellence (get the trio of fish with champagne sauerkraut and fois gras) and personal service make this a must do in Reins. If you are English speaking ask for the tablet with the menu.
Joe King★★★★★
We turned up on a Friday evening without a reservation and we were lucky enough to get the last available table downstairs in the 'cave'!
What an incredible experience we had, the starter of snails and mushroom is stunning both in presentation and flavour. The main course of lamb was recommended by our wonderful waitress and it was beyond our expectation! The desert of Creme Brulee and Chocolate fondant were both perfect.
All topped off in a stunning environment with beautiful champagne... What more could you want from a dinner in Reims!

Been wanting to try this new restaurant for quite some time; having tried & enjoyed its previous version (la table amoureuse - Anna S) several years ago.
Unfortunately the experience was not the same.
The decor is a bit antique and traditional, with very stark colors (violet especially!).
Seating is comfortable enough, and kudos to our waiter (Armando) with his unique charm and energy.
Tried the foie gras with strawberry: 2 nice pieces served with a brioche bread, but lacked in seasoning (no salt flakes), the brioche was too dry, and the mix with strawberry was somewhat nice but lacked in substance. We also tried the Carpaccio of sea bass with green tea - a strong disappointment, much red fruits but the overall flavor was very lacking.
The Gilt-head bream & roasted eggplants didn't improve our impression: the filets were not fresh, the taste was that of store-bought fish, the vegetable mixture (eggplants, cucumbers, spring onions, confit tomatoes, peaches, and verbena) had a nice flavor to it, fresh with well cooked vegetables.
The best dish that we DID enjoy was the Stuffed zucchini parmesan cream: delicious creamy flavorful sauce, and nicely cooked vegetables.
We also opted for a Mailly Champagne bottle, only to be told that it wasn't available anymore (although on the menu). However, the Leclerc-Briant was an exquisite choice: smooth, balanced, and fragrant.
A bit torn for a first experience, with some highs but major lows… especially the hefty prices!
Still some way to go to get back to the previous level in my mind!

Excellent food and service! Everything was prepared so delicately and deliciously - the seasoning was on point, fresh ingredients, well-plated in appropriate portions. Highly recommended!

I have to admit, after high expectations, this was one of my most disappointing dining experience in recent years. Made reservations in advance for New Year’s Eve, we arrived on time were quickly served an amuse bouche and first round of champagne, but after that, things turned quickly… or not so quickly.
We soon found ourselves waiting for our entrees for 1h 10 min after our arrival. While this is most definitely a problem, this was exacerbated by the fact that we were never served water, and never had an opportunity to order more wine because there were only two servers on a fully reserved night.
By this point we were ready to leave and expressed this to the servers. An initial apology was made and we were asked to stay… unfortunately we fell for it, until the next plate arrived. The foie gras was foie gras, nothing revelatory, but the next dish (scallops) was lacking. The scallops weren’t anything exceptional, yet they were swimming in a purée that lacked flavor and substance. The final heartbreaker of the evening was the dessert - a poached pear with cream, biscuit rose, and what tasted like sugared ice - just fell flat. There was absolutely not any taste nor flavor for any of the items in this dish.
To add to all of this, the restaurant was freezing, especially the bathroom, and the decor has fallen behind times.
Overall, for over €220, nothing was up to the level of expectation for quality, service, nor atmosphere. We requested an immediate refund in person but were refused.

If a place has a small set menu, you expect them to be experts in what they do, and let me tell you, this place is expert in beef, fries, and addictive special green sauce! One of the best, most surprising meals of our life. The entrecôte was cooked to the rare perfection my partner asked for. I thoroughly enjoyed my smash burger drenched in the green sauce. The fries - crispy, salty perfection in unlimited quantity if you so choose. If you order the entrecôte, you have the option to have two (included) courses of it. To top it all off, the service, was fast, great, and super friendly, particularly our good homie Abdallah, he was always smiling! Would HIGHLY recommend.

Amazing food and service for a great price. I had the duck in orange sauce and it was delicious! The servers were all very friendly and helpful.
While the menu is mainly duck dishes, there are a few chicken and beef dishes available. The drinks menu had something for everyone too (and they do have champagne!).
Really recommend this place 🙂
Steve Parkes★★★★★
Didn't really know what to expect. It's highly recommended but cheap! In reality, a great little restaurant serving the very best of duck dishes. We started with the Thai Duck Croquettes which were fabulous, but they looked so nice we dived right in without taking a photo! Staff were great, and although we've had cheaper wines, it was a very nice bottle. Would 100% go back.
Niels van Elten★★★★☆
Service is amazing and good humoured, good jokes 11/10 40€ tip.
The duck is the star of the show, with amazing mayo. The side dishes are quite decent but nothing to write home about. The fries under the duck soaks them nicely in the duck fat. However, they were a bit soggy likely due to some older oil and not double frying the fries.
All in all I would recommend coming by here, and just ordering the duck.
*the cheese platter is just one type of cheese, the cheese is nice and pairs well with cote du rhone or an even bolder wine. It being one cheese better suits it as an appetiser as well.
**at night some of the upstairs tables have some bright white streetlights shining straight in your eyes. This is difficult to prevent. Maybe some little curtains at these spots would improve the atmosphere. However, I am not gonna lower my atmosphere rating for that, because the toilet had epic disco lights.

We were seated at the back surrounded by bottles. It was a Wednesday night & it was nearly full. We had the bruscetta to share for entree. It was large & covered to the max with tomato & cheese. My partner had the pork filet mignon for a main & he liked it. My salmon pasta was a bit cold, but there was a lot of salmon in it. The side of vegetables was delicious. The service was a bit up & down, forgetting some items at times. Overall, worth a visit.

A Charming Spot Right by the Cathedral ⭐⭐⭐⭐
If you're wandering the streets of Reims after visiting the magnificent Notre-Dame Cathedral, do yourself a favor and step into Bistro des Anges at 12 Rue Chanzy. This friendly brasserie with its classic large zinc bar feels like the perfect mix of local hangout and welcoming tourist stop.
The atmosphere is lively and unpretentious — think bustling conversations, a great playlist in the background, and tables that encourage people-watching or chatting with neighbors. It's ideal for both a quick lunch or a longer dinner with friends or family.
The menu changes with the seasons and offers a nice balance of traditional French classics, some international touches, and vegetarian options. Standouts include the onion soup (rich and deeply flavorful), escargot for those who love the classics, beef bavette with shallot sauce, and hearty sharing plates. The wine and Champagne list is extensive and impressive — exactly what you'd hope for in the heart of Champagne country. Knowledgeable staff (including owners Jérôme and Thomas) are happy to guide you with personalized recommendations.
Service is generally warm and efficient, though it can occasionally feel a touch rushed when the place is full. Portions are generous, and the value is solid for the quality and location.
We particularly enjoyed the desserts and the overall convivial vibe. It's not ultra-fancy fine dining, but it's exactly the kind of reliable, joyful French bistro experience that makes you want to linger over another glass of bubbly.
Would I go back? Absolutely. Perfect for pre- or post-cathedral visits, or just a relaxed meal with excellent Champagne.

Great lunch spot steps from the Cathedral. Extensive wine list featuring champagnes. The daily special was beef stroganoff was excellent. Sit outside if the weather is good, otherwise there is plenty of time inside seating.

The place was right behind our hotel and with a partial view of the Notre Dame. The food was very tasty! We loved everything we ordered. Even though the place looks and feels simple - the quality of food was very high.
The service was friendly and nice. Highly recommended! It gets quite busy which is a good sign, as we saw that the locals like it. We booked through our concierge. And it surely proved itself very well. Thank you

We stopped by on a Monday morning at around 10am hoping to have some breakfast. The owner, who was incredibly friendly and welcoming, explained that the kitchen was busy preparing for lunch and dinner. Rather than simply turning us away, he suggested we visit the local bakery, pick up some fresh pastries, and bring them back to enjoy with a great coffee at the bistro.
It was such a thoughtful gesture and we really appreciated it. We noticed other couples were invited to do the same, which created a lovely relaxed atmosphere.
The location is fantastic, with beautiful views over the square and the cathedral, making it a perfect place to sit and enjoy a coffee.
We also had a great conversation with the owner, who shared stories about his previous career as a wine distributor in London, which made the visit even more memorable.
Although we didn’t get to eat from the kitchen this time, we’ll definitely be back to try dinner on our next visit. Highly recommended for the warm hospitality alone!

Review My Trip★★★★★
Indoor and outdoor seating options on a bustling main street in Reims. Sitting outside feels like classic French café culture, while inside is much more modern and surprisingly smart in contrast.
They were very busy on the Wednesday evening we visited and you could sense some of the staff starting to feel the pressure a little, but nothing that negatively affected the experience in any major way.
We chose the €45 three-course menu along with a bottle of local Alsace Pinot Gris, which was absolutely delicious.
The standout dishes for us were the egg with parmesan — honestly, just no words — and the rose veal, which was excellent.
Would absolutely recommend this place for dinner in Reims.

My husband and I happened to come upon L’apostroohe while in Reims for the weekend. Our server, Olivier was magnificent and the food was amazing. We had the Cordon Bleu and the Veal Hanger Steak; both were delicious!

Absolutely delicious dinner. The service and atmosphere were great. The food was delicious and everything we expected. The steak frites and fish were perfectly prepared and the tart was great for desert. I would highly recommend anyone that is in Reims to eat here. The area is lively which is an added perk. This will be a repeat the next time we are in Reims!

Practical Tips for Dining at Traditional French Restaurants in Reims
Dining in France follows a rhythm that differs from many other countries, and understanding the local etiquette will significantly enhance your experience. While the restaurants in Reims are welcoming, they operate on a schedule that respects the sanctity of meal times. Knowing how to navigate reservations, pacing, and ordering will ensure you are treated not just as a customer, but as a guest who appreciates the craft of French dining.
Make Reservations in Advance
Traditional restaurants in Reims often have limited seating because the chefs prioritize quality over volume. It is common for the best tables to be booked out days or even weeks in advance, particularly on weekends or during the harvest season. A simple phone call or an email to the restaurant is often preferred over online booking platforms, and it allows you to communicate any dietary requirements directly.
Embrace the Lunch Menu
If you are watching your budget but still want to experience top-tier French cooking, visit during lunch hours. Most traditional restaurants offer a "Formule" or "Menu du Jour" at a fraction of the dinner price. This set menu typically includes a starter and main course or a main course and dessert, offering the best value for money while showcasing the chef’s daily market finds.
** Understand the Service Pace**
A traditional French meal is an event, not a quick stop. Expect the service to be measured and elegant, allowing you time to digest between courses. Do not rush the server for the bill; instead, signal when you are ready to order or pay. This slower pace is a sign of respect for the food and the dining experience, allowing you to savor the atmosphere of the historic city.
Ask for Local Pairings
While Champagne is the obvious choice in Reims, the traditional cuisine of the region pairs beautifully with other local wines, such as Bouzy Rouge or Coteaux Champenois. Do not hesitate to ask the sommelier or owner for a recommendation. They often take great pride in introducing guests to lesser-known local vintages that complement the regional sauces and game dishes far better than a generic international label.
Learn Basic French Phrases
While many staff in Reims speak English, greeting the host with a "Bonjour" and using basic phrases like "Merci" and "S’il vous plaît" goes a long way. It demonstrates a respect for the culture that is immediately appreciated in traditional establishments. This small effort often leads to warmer service and sometimes even a complimentary digestif at the end of the meal.
Choosing to dine at a traditional French restaurant in Reims is an investment in memory. It is about sitting in a room where the décor has witnessed decades of celebrations, where the cutlery feels heavy in your hand, and where the flavors tell the story of the land. These meals remind us that food is not just fuel but a profound expression of place and history.
As you plan your itinerary through the Champagne region, leave room for spontaneity, but secure your tables at these culinary landmarks. Whether you are indulging in a creamy blanquette or a perfectly roasted pigeon, you are participating in a tradition that has made French cuisine a UNESCO World Heritage treasure. Bon appétit.
