12 Best Sushi Spots in Saint-Malo

Perched on the rugged coast of Brittany, Saint-Malo is a city defined by its dramatic tides, formidable ramparts, and a fierce maritime heritage. This historic corsair stronghold is not just a visual masterpiece of granite and sea; it is also a gateway to some of the freshest seafood in France. While the oyster beds of Cancale and the scallops of the Bay of Saint-Brieuc often steal the spotlight, the local sushi scene is a vibrant testament to the region’s deep connection with the ocean.

Finding exceptional sushi in a town famous for buckwheat crêpes and moules-frites might seem surprising, but the quality of the local catch demands it. The chefs here understand that great sushi is not about masking flavors but showcasing the purity of the fish. Whether you are seeking a refined omakase experience or a casual bento box after walking the ramparts, the intra-muros streets and the surrounding neighborhoods offer diverse options.

This guide is designed to navigate you through the very best sushi spots in Saint-Malo. We have considered not only the freshness of the fish and the skill of the rice preparation but also the atmosphere and value for money. You will find establishments that range from traditional Edomae-style counters to modern fusion concepts that incorporate Breton ingredients.

Because the city is compact, most of these culinary gems are easily accessible on foot from the main gates. However, a few hidden treasures in the nearby Paramé and Saint-Servan districts are well worth the short detour. Each entry has been selected for its commitment to quality, hygiene standards, and consistency, ensuring you don’t waste a meal on a subpar tourist trap.

As a coastal city, the menu can change daily based on what the boats bring in. Expect to see local sea bass, mackerel, and even lobster making appearances alongside the classic salmon and tuna imports. This local adaptation is what makes the sushi in Saint-Malo distinct from what you might find in Paris or Lyon.

Without further ado, here is our curated list of the top addresses to satisfy your sushi cravings in the corsair city.

World class. Food is 10/10. As we were eating we discussed coming back in the future, would even be worth the almost 3 hour train ride from Paris just to eat here for lunch. Ideal. Such a talented chef. Congrats. And thank you.

We had high expectations of this restaurant after driving from Nice over several days and being tired of French food. We had lunch menu plus ravioli in broth. My fish was good but a bit sweet and tasted just like French food (I couldn't taste miso). My husband's dontaktsu was nicely fried but the meat was a bit tough. The dash broth for ravioli had depth and umame but alas, it was too salty.

overrated in general -hence unfortunately over priced. Japanese dishes are authentic and mediocre (at Japan standard) at the same time, which matches its izakaya position but if anyone markets it as fine restaurant that's exaggeration. Not very happy with the rice which was cooked with too much water, and is tasteless, suggest to change to better rice.Sake selection is limited. Disappointed at the service, for lunch menu the hot dish was served before the appetizer even being touched, you have to choose either to risk the sashimi get bad exposing in room temperature for too long or let you hot dish get cold, - had not yet experiencd such in dozens of restaurants in France so far. When changing plates, the waitress put our chopsticks directly on the table, whereas they provide every guest a chopsticks holder, - lack of awareness of service standard.

Modern french-Japanese cuisine restaurant. As it’s Izakaya, it’s recommended to order 2-3 plates. Very good service and very interesting to look how they cook. Fency and exotic but little bit expensive.

Otonali was suggested to us by a friend who lived in Japan, and I can only suggest it to you! The Chef's approach to Japanese food was so delicious as it deviates away from what you typically associate with western Japanese food. Go and experience it for yourself! Our only regret was not to bring a bigger appetite. The staff were also top notch and very helpful! This will definitely be one of our first stops when we return to Saint Malo.

On our visit to St Malo, a break from heavy meals, crepes, butter, sugar. Found Hokkiaido in the suburbs. No booking but accomdated us. Soon filled up. We tried a few things yakitori, enamel, some sushi tuna avocado. Then some ramen veggie and classic charsu with extras eggs. Well worth it. A satisfying meal but not heavy. Well recommended and yakitori was standout.

man, idk. this is just not legit. first, the attitude - we got there before 7 pm, and they immediately told us they were fully booked but could “squeeze us in” if we finished in 45 minutes. ok, fair enough, but the service felt unwelcoming, which was unexpected. normally, you’d expect the friendly, super-polite japanese hospitality, but not here. the response felt abrupt, like they were in a rush to turn us away or make us order to go. second, the food - absolutely disappointing and unauthentic. we ordered two ramen and some beef skewers. the skewers? made from thin, frozen beef slices you can get from the supermarket for 10 euros a box, except here, you get two tiny slices for five euros, stuffed with some random cheese. like… why? then the ramen—soggiest, most flavorless bowl of noodles i’ve ever had. feels like they boiled the noodles hours before and just let them sit there until someone ordered. my friend loves adding vinegar to his food, especially noodles, so we asked for some. weirdly, they responded, “we don’t have chinese vinegar.” but we had only asked for vinegar in general, not anything specific. since we were speaking chinese to ourselves, we talked to them only in english, they seemed to assume we wanted chinese vinegar rather than just any vinegar at all. it was surprising that they didn’t have any vinegar available. 🥸 when my friend confronted them about the soggy noodles, the response was even worse. they straight-up said, “this is how we do it, we don’t do it the chinese way.” like… what? girl, are you for real? the racial profiling was obvious. mind you, we’ve both been to japan countless times—don’t lie and act like this is standard when it’s not. after some back-and-forth, they clearly didn’t want to make a scene, so they eventually made my friend a new bowl. and about the soggy noodles—so bad i just didn’t eat. i didn’t see the point in asking for a remake since the broth itself lacked flavor, so i just left it. my friend, though, got his new bowl, and for that i will give them two stars instead of one. the pic is my bowl of ramen and the video is to show how soggy the noodles were—you can literally split them with your 🥢

The worst service I ever received, took more than 2 hours and didn't receive all of what we ordered, instead they served us half of it and said that was all when we clearly counted it and was less 30 pieces than the 62 that compose the hokaido plateau. One of the tables left because they waited more than one hour before being served, the others had to go get their own drinks and request their food multiple times even going to the counter to demand for it. Such a shame, could be a great place to eat out but I believe if you order takeout it should be better since they can't mess your order up
Monica★★★★★
A delicious spot for Japanese! It smelled amazing when we walked in. The staff were so friendly. The restaurant was very clean and the bathroom was also very clean. We don’t like ramen much but it was a cold, rainy day so we decided to order it. It was the best ramen. It wasn’t full of starch and cloudy broth. All very fresh ingredients.

Clearly labelled vegetarian options but you have to check with the waiter if they are vegan. I had the veggie (which is also vegan) poke bowl. There were elements on the menu listed that didn’t appear in the actual dish eg the edamame beans and cashew nuts, but that wasn’t too bad, they just didn’t tell you. The portions were quite small and served in takeaway tableware. There are about 3 tables in total as it’s a very small eatery, but you can get a takeaway and sit in if someone leaves in the time you’re waiting to collect it. The service is super smiley and friendly. Little to no knowledge of English so you’ll need some basic French to order, if you’re coming from afar as a tourist!

This was one of the best experiences of Japanese kitchen in my life. Having said that I was travelling in Japan before und often dine in Japanese restaurants in Europe. The Sashimi was the best course of the evening - salmon, thuna and octopus were fantastically marinated. A great find today. A small Thai/sushi deli. The shop is small, but the selection isn't necessarily limited; everything looked tempting and delicious. We ordered a sushi platter for €20 and two dishes for around €7 each: cashew chicken (which could use a touch more seasoning for my taste) and red curry shrimp. Everything was very good. The red curry was very pleasant (although I found it a little mild in terms of spice, but that's entirely my opinion). Each dish comes with a portion of rice, and you can heat it up on the spot 👍🏻. The sushi/maki were super fresh, and it's nice to eat sushi in a generous portion (fish and rice, not just rice and a little fish). The service was very pleasant, with a very friendly saleswoman. An added bonus is their use of fresh, locally sourced ingredients. And they offer home delivery. We will definitely return and highly recommend it 🤔🤗

We had very delicious lunch at this restaurant. The place has really great food for such a touristy location. The waiter was very friendly and welcoming, even while I do not speak any French. He spoke to me with perfect English and let us move from outside to a table inside once one was free. This was the best hospitality I had ever in France.

We came here for food and drinks and were very happy with the experience. As we were sitting outside and it was very busy inside, we did feel a little forgotten, but we were not in a rush, so we’re happy with the service. The food, wow! Such an amazing variety on the menu. Would return!

First visit, the owner very helpful and guided me to a good table outside, extra blankets available against the cold. Good tapas selection, very good range of draught and bottled beers. Portions were sensible, I chose two bowls, fried cod and chicken kebabs. Good place to people watch, to talk, to enjoy life

Looking for sushi in Saint-Malo, I stumbled upon this place, which seems to have a great reputation among the locals. And I can confirm that it lives up to its name! The sushi is prepared right in front of you, with incredibly fresh and truly delicious ingredients. They offer all sorts of flavors: octopus, scallops, smoked mackerel, shrimp, and more. Beyond the quality of the meal, we met Vincent, a very welcoming owner who shared his passion for the ingredients he uses, explaining their origins and even offering us samples to whet our appetites. We spent a good twenty minutes chatting with him, sharing some fascinating stories. In the end, we paid between €30 and €40 for 30 pieces, which is incredibly reasonable considering the quality and generous portions. In short, if you're a sushi lover, this is a must-try in Saint-Malo. I recommend calling Vincent early to place your order to ensure you get the best experience. Thanks again, Vincent, we'll definitely be back! 🙏 Léa and Valentin

This was a real 'find' in the back streets of St Malo and is one of the best all-you-can-eats I have ever encountered. The range of Chinese fare is very large. And here's the bonus - there's sushi and delicious oysters. As many as you like! Price per head was just under 18 Euros. A great way to finish your holiday while awaiting the morning ferry. Cafe Cargo Clute absolutely lives up to its Google rating. The owner was incredibly friendly and spent a good five minutes walking us through the lunch menu, sharing his personal favourites and suggesting thoughtful pairings. His passion for the café was obvious, and you can tell a lot of care has gone into curating the menu. We had the lunch special and tried all three croques—each one was excellent. The salad was fresh and crisp, and the gazpacho was spot on for a warm, sunny day. Of course, we had to try the oysters too, which were fresh and juicy—an absolute treat. A great find in St. Malo—highly recommended!

Great ambiance, warm and attentive service, and an unforgettable meal. I ordered the Terre et Mer (surf and turf) crêpe, and it was outstanding. The scallops were perfectly cooked, the smoked duck was rich and savory, and the buttery buckwheat crêpe was wonderfully crisp. Everything paired beautifully with a glass of local cider. A perfect taste of Brittany!

Best crépe I've ever had! The savoury crepes were very good but the sweet one with home made chocolate and Chantilly....out of this world! Also very cheap for the quality and the amazing service!

From the moment we arrived, the team offered exceptional service — the kind that makes you feel genuinely seen and cared for. They immediately helped us find a temporary parking solution since we had our baby with us, and that thoughtful gesture set the tone for the entire visit. Inside, the staff brought a personal touch to everything: recommending dishes with sincerity, checking in with warmth, and creating a space that felt both comfortably relaxed and subtly luxurious. It’s rare to find a place that balances those two feelings so effortlessly. The galettes were superb — beautifully prepared, generous, and full of flavor. Dessert was just as impressive, indulgent without being heavy, and all at a price that felt refreshingly affordable for the quality offered. They truly lived up to their Google reviews, and in many ways exceeded them. A place that understands hospitality, craft, and heart. Highly recommended.
Daniel Banh★★★★★
Quite a busy spot so better to book in advance. Lots of options for galette and crepes, including vegetarian options. A nice spot for tea as well in the afternoon
Dennis Corsten★★★★★
Excellent place, very friendly and helpful staff, very friendly with our kids. The restaurant looks very nice. The meals are a treat for the eyes and taste wonderful. Very balanced flavours, it is listed and famous as a crêpe restaurant but their omelettes and salades are also very good. They also have a great selection of tea and have some nice wines if that's more for you. All in all, I would definitely recommend this place when visiting the port of Saint-Malo.

Essential Tips for Enjoying Sushi in Saint-Malo

To make the most of your dining experience in this unique coastal city, there are a few local nuances and practical strategies you should keep in mind. From timing your visit around the famous tides to understanding local service hours, a little preparation goes a long way in ensuring a seamless meal.

1. Book Ahead During High Season

Saint-Malo is one of Brittany’s most popular tourist destinations. During the summer months and school holidays, the intra-muros area becomes incredibly crowded. Many of the higher-end sushi restaurants have limited seating and book out days in advance. Do not rely on walk-ins for dinner; call ahead or book online to secure a table.

2. Look for Local Fish Specials

A truly great sushi chef in Saint-Malo will utilize the local market. Ask for the "suggestion du jour" or look for specials featuring local catch like lieu jaune (pollock), Saint-Jacques (scallops), or bar (sea bass). This is often the freshest option on the menu and offers a taste of the region you cannot get elsewhere.

3. Check the Tide Schedule

This might sound odd for a dining tip, but Saint-Malo experiences some of the highest tides in Europe. If you are planning to combine your meal with a walk on the beach or a visit to Grand Bé island, check the tide times first. Some restaurants offer spectacular views of the changing sea; dining during a high tide often provides a more dramatic and immersive atmosphere than when the bay is empty.

4. Consider a Bento Box for Lunch

If you are spending the day exploring the ramparts or heading to Dinard on the ferry, a sushi bento box is an excellent alternative to heavy French bistro food. Many restaurants offer lunchtime "formules" or set menus that provide excellent value for money, allowing you to enjoy high-quality fish without the price tag of a full dinner service.

5. Don’t Skip the Takeaway Options

Sometimes after a long day of travel, you just want to eat in your hotel room or Airbnb. Many of the best sushi spots in Saint-Malo offer efficient takeaway and delivery services. The packaging is usually excellent, and it allows you to enjoy premium sushi with a bottle of cider from a local market in the comfort of your own space.

The intersection of Japanese culinary discipline and Breton maritime bounty creates a dining experience that is uniquely suited to Saint-Malo’s character. Whether you are refueling after a long walk along the Sillon beach or celebrating a special occasion within the stone walls of the old city, the sushi here offers a lighter, refined alternative to the heavier regional fare.
