La Rochelle’s healthcare landscape is vibrant, with numerous officines spread across the historic center, the university district, and the quieter residential neighborhoods. French pharmacies are unique in the level of care they provide.

Thank you to the lovely blonde woman (sports coach), pharmacist or pharmacy technician, for her help when I felt faint this morning in your pharmacy. Excellent pharmacy and very pleasant staff. Thank you again! 🙏🏻

While passing through La Rochelle, I stopped by this pharmacy. I was received very courteously, discreetly, and with a big smile (thank you to the very pleasant Lolita for that). Moreover, they have a truly exceptional selection of products. Personally, I can never find a brand that suits me for creams against hemorrhoids and genital yeast infections... Imagine my surprise when I discovered that this brand was sold in this pharmacy, and above all, the advice was excellent. You can tell the staff really know the products they sell. I recommend it 2000%!
Maugan Le Rhun★★★★★
Best pharmacy in La Rochelle. The welcome is pleasant and professional; the team takes the time to answer questions and give clear advice. The selection of over-the-counter products is vast, the prices are unbeatable, and the products are varied and well-presented. There's little waiting time, and the staff is attentive. I recommend it 100%.

I was discharged from the hospital following a workplace accident. The two pharmacists forced me to pay for the entire splint without even taking my health insurance card, despite having the workplace accident certificate and the prescription, and most importantly, despite the law! €135 out of my pocket. No empathy, no possibility of dialogue, and a complete lack of understanding of the law... in short, I would have been better off going to my usual pharmacy. I got reimbursed by my employer, who confirmed this practice was totally illegal!

Always top-notch, the welcome, the service, etc... Even though I haven't lived in Port-Neuf for a long time, I still make the trip there and will continue to do so because there's no better pharmacy with such pleasant and friendly staff, as usual for years 👍😍 Don't change a thing, you're all lovely 💞

A customer since 2020, the welcome is always warm, the team is excellent, and a special mention goes to the managers who always take the time to explain your prescription, all with a team that's always smiling 😉😁

I went to the pharmacy on the public holiday of November 11th because they were on duty, and I was truly delighted with the service I received. The team was very professional: they had me undergo the necessary tests and explained the treatment very clearly and patiently. The pharmacist was particularly kind, attentive, and reassuring. A big thank you for their availability and kindness, even on a public holiday! I highly recommend this pharmacy.

I haven't lived in the neighborhood for very long. I first visited in May and then again in June. It's a very good pharmacy run by three partner pharmacists. The pharmacy is very welcoming, and the staff is very kind and helpful. They take the time to explain things clearly. They are truly caring people. I've rarely seen such a welcoming pharmacy.

Horrible, unhelpful and unfriendly pharmacists and staff. Offered to order in a product for me for the next day, ran there before closing (as we were leaving the city) and told me they sold it or just didn’t get it in. No apology, nothing. Go to a good pharmacy.

The team must have changed. I don't get the same level of service anymore. In fact, this is the second or third time I've had problems with my prescriptions. Beware of the manager who told me, "The doctor can't send prescriptions by email," or the pharmacy technician who says she called and couldn't get through to the right department for an advance on medication, while I called and got the right one immediately. She made it very clear she was displeased at being upset. And don't even get me started on the mess with the flu vaccine prescription, even though I'm a priority case and it needed to be done urgently. I'm giving it three stars, but only halfway through, because I did get my medication eventually, maybe because I said, "Well, once you have it, you'll deliver it to me."

I wish to leave a review concerning a specific pharmacist, and not the entire team, as several other staff members are very professional and respectful. I regularly come to pick up a complex medication, including a biologic for a debilitating condition. On several occasions, this pharmacist (the most senior member of the team, for context) has been sarcastic and condescending towards me. During my last visit, having run out of a medication and having an appointment with my general practitioner a few days later to renew my prescription, I asked if it would be possible to get an emergency refill. Her response was: "I can't, that's just wishful thinking," in a tone that clearly implied I was lying. I tried to explain my situation: I suffer from a debilitating illness that makes travel difficult and sometimes inadvisable. I also explained that my 85-year-old mother lives in Saint-Martin-de-Ré, which means a risky car journey for her, and that public transport would require a long and inconvenient bus trip. Despite these explanations, the pharmacist told me that my mother could travel and suggested I take the bus myself, which I found particularly lacking in empathy given my medical situation. Unfortunately, this isn't the first time this person has behaved this way. During a previous dispensing of my biologic medication, she berated me in front of other customers because I hadn't brought the special bag for transporting the medication, which put me in an awkward position. When I reminded her of this incident, she claimed not to remember it. I want to reiterate that this review does not reflect the entire pharmacy, where I encountered other competent and respectful professionals. However, when faced with a serious illness, a minimum of listening and consideration is expected. That's why I decided to change pharmacies.

I have been diagnosed with epilepsy in April. I experience generalized tonic-clonic seizures and partial seizures (where I don't lose consciousness and there's no need to go to the hospital). My usual pharmacy is Gambetta, but it's closed on Saturday afternoons. I live in Saint-Xandre but I'm currently in La Rochelle. Fifteen minutes ago, I had a partial seizure, and I usually have two or three more during the day. I went to this pharmacy where, last time, I saw a lovely man and got my Valium in ampoules. I explained that I had a seizure fifteen minutes ago, showed them my medical report, my two most recent prescriptions (the last one was at the beginning of the month and is renewable three times), and the letter from the MDPH (Departmental House for Disabled Persons) declaring me disabled. I asked them to give me a benzodiazepine tablet, any kind, so I wouldn't have another attack and could feel better so I could go home, since my medication is there. The woman refused to look at my documents. She categorically refused to help me, telling me to go to the emergency room even though I was exhausted, would have to wait three hours or more, and it was very far away. The other woman aggressively claimed to have a letter from social security saying they weren't supposed to give me any medication. I asked to see this letter, but she refused awkwardly, even though I had it with me. It only concerned my ADHD medication, which I have to take at Gambetta Hospital. She refused to look at it. The second woman started yelling at me, telling me to stop treating them like idiots, and threatened to throw me out, becoming extremely aggressive. I thought a pharmacy's purpose was to help and care for its "patients." The gentleman is lovely, but the two women are awful and give a very bad impression of this pharmacy, making it seem like a business to make money off its customers and not a place to help its patients. I'm sitting on a bench and hoping I can get home. I don't need to be in the emergency room; I haven't lost consciousness, and I need to go home—I'm exhausted. I'm not registered with any other pharmacy, so I'm not even going to try. They don't know my medical history, unlike the pharmacy at the market, contrary to what they claim. They're also lying when they say there's no history on my health insurance card. This is completely unacceptable. I'm going to file a complaint with the pharmacists' association.

I was passing through La Rochelle, and not knowing the area, I went into the first pharmacy I came across. I wasn't disappointed at all; I met Roxane who was lovely. Thank you again for the warm welcome!

This morning, when an elderly person fell down a flight of stairs and badly scraped their arm, the pharmacist, with great compassion and kindness, offered to dress the wound. She did so gently and professionally. This kind of behavior is so rare these days that I wanted to highlight it and reiterate my gratitude to this dedicated individual.

A very pleasant neighborhood pharmacy. I thank the management and staff for their kindness and welcome; always available and attentive. I highly recommend them!

Very unpleasant staff. They treat customers with disdain. The staff don't even check if the medications are in stock. Their manner of speaking is very unpleasant, especially the short brunette with glasses. Avoid this pharmacy.
Merci Merci★☆☆☆☆
Avoid this place at all costs! She treats people with contempt. We left shocked by the woman's behavior, and after discussing it with others, I wasn't surprised when they confirmed this attitude based on the way she looked at people. Honestly, walk a few meters further and go to a real pharmacy.
Philippe Moreau★☆☆☆☆
The manager is awful! Avoid this pharmacy at all costs! She's so bitter and haughty! She's only interested in lining her own pockets at the expense of her customers! Including young people! Shame on you! This is definitely not the pharmacy where you'll be offered reimbursement through your health insurance card! Even if it is reimbursed for young people! Oh no 🤣 according to her; "you can pay even if it's reimbursed, it doesn't change anything, oh dear," in a very sarcastic tone. Well, no, Madam! I don't pay into the system for that! Some young people might not be able to afford it! Shame on you, come back down to earth, or maybe eat some carrots, I don't know, it might make you, if you're lucky, perhaps pleasant.
classyandress★☆☆☆☆
Avoid this pharmacy at all costs!! If you want an unpleasant response after their mistake (they didn't ask for my health insurance card for reimbursement), when you later point it out, they reply, "There's no harm in paying," in a very haughty manner. I pay into the system for a reason, and now I understand that this pharmacy has no compassion whatsoever and only cares about lining their own pockets!!!!

I went to this pharmacy last night (not my first time) because it was open, and I was served by a very kind gentleman who gave me more advice than the on-call doctor, who didn't know what was wrong with me. I left with a smile despite the pain. And indeed, he was right. I had a good night's sleep. Thank you so much! 😀

I'm not usually one for negative reviews, but this... A debilitating migraine was starting, and the heat was unbearable. I rushed to the pharmacy and politely asked to buy a box of Doliprane and a glass of water. The woman's response: "We don't give out glasses of water. Go ask for a carafe of water at the Café de La Paix; it's free." Am I dreaming, or is there a problem? This is a pharmacy! There were two of us customers, and you were two sales assistants, and you responded to my request with: "We don't give out glasses of water."
Coralie Owczaruk★★★★★
A very good pharmacy located in downtown La Rochelle. Both the pharmacist and the pharmacist take the time to talk with their patients, answer their questions, and guide them as best they can. I'm quite surprised to read some reviews that seem to think a pharmacy is a supermarket or a café. There's no obligation to provide water in a pharmacy.
Manon Chamballon★★★★★
The manager gave me a most pleasant welcome, offering valuable advice and being a great listener. When I read some of the comments, I find it hard to believe we're talking about the same person... some people just want to stir up hatred and give a bad name out of jealousy or perhaps boredom. In short, you can go there with complete confidence; you'll be taken care of very professionally! I've been a customer for years and I won't be changing pharmacies. Thank you to you and the whole team for your kindness; keep up the good work!

One star because I have to. Avoid at all costs! Appalling service. They can't even read a prescription to order a product! I had to go three times to finally pick up the urgent item I needed! I called, they told me the product was available, I arrived the same day, and it wasn't available; it was a different product. You give them the prescription, they order the product, they take your money upfront, but in the end, they don't even call to tell you the ordered product has arrived. You go back, and the product isn't the right one. They refund the difference! Not even an apology! I had to place a new order and go back again to pick up the product! Furthermore, when you ask for a specific product, they try to sell you something else! A serious lack of professionalism. I won't be going back. Avoid at all costs!!!

The heatwave plan for the most vulnerable and isolated people isn't just PR; it's practical and based on common sense. Home deliveries aren't mandatory, but many pharmacies do them ethically, even morally. Not to your home, and without providing a reason.
Thierry Jean★★★★★
I stopped going to my local pharmacy, even though it was just a few steps from my home, for reasons many others have shared. The final straw was when I saw large flyers prominently displayed on the counter, "protesting" against the street's redevelopment. So, I ended up going to Puilboreau instead—ironic, isn't it? Since then, with the new pharmacists, everything has changed. The pharmacy has been completely renovated, the service is discreet yet very efficient and friendly. They offer advice and listen attentively. In short, the Lafond pharmacy has become my neighborhood pharmacy again, easily accessible, and much more convenient than going anywhere else. It will be even more so once the renovations are finished.
Sue Gayraud★★★★★
The service was excellent, both on the phone and in person. It's much appreciated when a visit to the pharmacy can be made pleasant despite one's needs or health condition.

I'm happy with my pharmacy. The service is always friendly. Thank you for the advice: screening for viral or bacterial tonsillitis with a rapid test. They can even detect cystitis. Good to know when you don't want to clog up the doctors' waiting rooms. 👌

Well-located, well-organized, and convenient pharmacy with a wide selection of cosmetic and dermatological products. Very friendly and competent staff. They are a supplier to my workplace, very fast and efficient. I recommend them in La Rochelle.

I didn't usually go to this pharmacy, living in Mireuil, and I can certainly understand why. The service was practically nonexistent. There were two people at the counter, one young and one older, who had a mask under her chin (might as well not wear it at all in that case). They seemed more interested in chatting than serving customers. When I was finally served, I knew I was bothering them. They answered me, but I could tell I was being rushed off my feet so they could get back to their conversation. Don't worry, I'll get it! It's a shame because I received excellent service from two young people a year and a half ago. What a pity...
Soso Allstar★☆☆☆☆
I thought I was going into a pharmacy, but given the noise and the number of children behind the counter, it felt more like a daycare. The service at the counter was impeccable; kudos to the person who maintained their composure and professionalism throughout our interaction. I don't know whose three (unruly) children these are, but it seems to me that daycares/nurseries/nannies still exist these days!

Tips for Choosing a Pharmacy in La Rochelle

Finding the right pharmacy goes beyond simply picking the one closest to your front door. A little research can save you time, reduce stress, and ensure you receive the best possible advice. Here are some practical tips to help you make an informed choice, whether you are settling into La Rochelle long-term or just passing through.

Check the on-call schedule in advance. French pharmacies operate on a rotating system for nights, Sundays, and public holidays. You can find the pharmacie de garde for La Rochelle by checking the local newspaper, asking at any pharmacy window, or using the official service-public.fr website. Knowing this before an emergency arises can save precious time.

Look for language accessibility. La Rochelle welcomes many international visitors and students. If your French is limited, seek out pharmacies near the tourist areas or the university where staff are more likely to speak English or Spanish. Clear communication is essential when discussing symptoms or medication instructions.

Ask about specialized services. Many pharmacies offer more than dispensing medication. Some provide vaccination services, home delivery for those with reduced mobility, or rental of medical equipment like crutches and breast pumps. If you have specific needs, a quick phone call can confirm whether a pharmacy can accommodate you.

Consider the parapharmacy selection. If you regularly purchase skincare, baby products, or natural remedies, the size and quality of the parapharmacy section matter. Larger pharmacies in La Rochelle often carry premium French dermo-cosmetic brands and can offer samples or personalized skincare advice.

Build a relationship with one pharmacist. Even if you use multiple pharmacies for convenience, having a primary pharmacist who knows your medication history is invaluable. They can spot potential interactions, remind you about renewals, and provide continuity of care that improves your overall health outcomes.

Navigating healthcare in a new or familiar city is always easier when you have reliable local knowledge. The pharmacies highlighted in this article represent some of the most trusted options in La Rochelle, known for their dedication to patient well-being and professional excellence.

The right pharmacy becomes more than a place to pick up medicine; it becomes a cornerstone of your daily health and peace of mind in La Rochelle.
