12 Best Parks & Gardens in Rouen

Rouen is a city best explored on foot, where medieval half-timbered houses give way to sweeping river views and quiet green corners. While the cathedral and cobbled lanes draw most of the attention, the city’s parks and gardens offer a calmer, more local way to experience its charm. These outdoor spaces range from formal French gardens to wild hillside escapes, each with its own rhythm and character.

For visitors, a park stop can be a chance to rest tired legs, enjoy a picnic, or let children burn off energy. For locals, these green spaces are part of daily life—morning jogs, lunchtime reading, weekend family gatherings. Understanding this dual use helps you choose the right spot for the moment, whether you want social energy or near silence.

Rouen’s green spaces also reflect its layered history. Some gardens were once private estates or monastery grounds, while others were created in the 19th century as public health projects. That heritage lingers in the mature trees, old stone walls, and thoughtful layouts that define many of the city’s most beloved outdoor rooms.

The city sits along the Seine, and several parks take advantage of elevated terrain to offer unexpected views over the rooftops and river. Others tuck themselves into residential neighborhoods, rewarding those who wander beyond the main tourist circuit. In every season, there is something worth seeing—spring blossoms, summer shade, autumn color, or frost-tipped winter branches.

This guide focuses on the best parks and gardens in Rouen that are accessible to the public and genuinely worth your time. The selections include a mix of large landscaped parks, intimate botanical gardens, and scenic viewpoints. Each entry is chosen for its atmosphere, maintenance, and ability to offer a true break from sightseeing.

Below, you will find the essential green spaces to visit, along with practical advice on how to make the most of them.

Jardin des Plantes de Rouen is truly a hidden gem and one of the most beautiful gardens we visited during our trip.** From the moment we entered, it was clear how much care and dedication goes into maintaining this place. Every section is beautifully presented, with vibrant flowers, rare plants, and fascinating vegetables that you don't often see elsewhere. One of the highlights for us was discovering unusual fruits, vegetables, and exotic plants growing throughout the garden. It felt like walking through a living museum of nature, with something interesting around every corner. The paths are peaceful, the displays are well maintained, and there are plenty of lovely spots to sit and simply enjoy the surroundings. The staff deserve special recognition. Everyone we met was friendly, welcoming, and clearly passionate about the garden. Their care and attention help make this place feel truly special. Another great bonus is that **entry is completely free**, making it incredible value for families, couples, and anyone who appreciates nature. We also found plenty of free on-street parking nearby, which made the visit even more convenient. If you're visiting Rouen, don't miss this place. It's a peaceful escape from the city, full of beauty, colour, and surprises. A wonderful garden that exceeded our expectations and is highly recommended for visitors of all ages.

Nice park with benches and green space. There is a self cleaning toilet. There is a playground. There is also a waterfall over rocks with a miniature house for the birds to rest on and drink the water.

I passed through Square Verdrel on my way to the Musée des Beaux-Arts, and it’s a wonderful park. It’s calm, peaceful, and conveniently located near the main attractions.

Small park but very nice to have a waterfall in the middle of town. Great place to rest with plenty of benches. Charming 💖

A very beautiful space, mostly filled with flowers, because if I understood correctly, many of the plants had been stolen. A shame, but a very pleasant place nonetheless.

It's a lovely initiative that a small association has created and maintains a beautiful garden-orchard.

we arrived on a sunday and were not warned that there was a private party with bbq planned. it was noisy as there were many people so the visit was spoiled. We won’t stay if we were warned. Also on my opinion the price is high for quite small garden.

Filled with colors beyond belief, this garden is sure to please you.Filled with roses, hydrangeas and more, many sounds and scents fill the air on a warm and sunny day. Spend time in the white garden, too, as you enjoy the many plants.

This was by far the best of the gardens we visited last year. Madam was a delightful lady and we so enjoyed the diversity of planting and colours. We will return

Nicolas ALLEAUME (LeMajipoorien)★★★★★
One of my favorite spots for running and family walks. A real success that has contributed to the revitalization of Rouen's quays. An award-winning and popular spot (in every sense of the word) as soon as a ray of sunshine breaks through the clouds, but where everyone can easily find a place and some peace and quiet.
Tuid Tuad★★★★★
Ideal for a relaxing time; apart from joggers, there's hardly anyone there! The area has been beautifully naturalized. Remember to take your trash with you! I didn't see any bins, unfortunately, but luckily the place remains generally clean. A great spot for dogs!
Artur B.★★★★☆
A very pretty place. Perfect for walks. You can already feel spring 2025 coming 😁
Dale Chien★★★★☆
The view is good, making it perfect for a walk, but the grass is uneven and there are discarded cigarette butts, so it may need more maintenance.
Hamza El Azouar★★★★★
A generally quiet place. It's an interesting spot to contemplate the right bank of Rouen, the Flaubert bridge and the sunset behind the hills and the Seine.

Absolutely ideal for a picnic by the water or for radio-controlled model boats. A new addition in 2025, continuing the improvements made in Rouen, this area enhances the usual route for runners and cyclists. There are picnic tables for lunch or a snack, and plenty of places to sit. Bring hats for children and sunglasses for sunny days, while the vegetation is still growing.
Paola Ross Anny Granda Torres★★★★★
Great experience with the water sports. Then swimming in the canal... the children had a great time, perfect for cooling off.
romain bacouel★★★★☆
The site is very well laid out, pleasant, with a bit of a holiday feel... A space very conducive to various activities, for a diverse audience. A place that can host activities in the city or its immediate surroundings, without causing a nuisance for local residents. It's all positive 👍, for everyone. But free access, without any specific supervision adapted to such a site, seems a bit inadequate... Good luck...
Romain Privé★★★★☆
A pleasant spot, a beautiful canal, and the location is perfect for relaxing after a stroll along the quays. However, the downside is the lack of greenery and activities nearby. Why not add some children's play equipment or a few exercise tools?
Lidia Anashkina★★★★★
A new spot in Rouen, perfect for a pleasant stroll. Easily accessible from the right bank quays via the Calypso river shuttle, then plenty of parking behind number 106.

A very pleasant 4km loop trail that allows you to discover original sculptures perfectly integrated into the forest. On view until September 2026.

It's a beautiful place. If you go, don't forget to bring apples for the wild boars; they love them.

We did route 16: gravel or tarmac road for one-third of the way and dirt road for the rest. The route is marked the whole way, and there's a map at the start (see photos). The circular markers were sometimes hard to spot, so we had to look for them. The trailhead indicates a 2.5-hour walk, but we completed it in under 2 hours as a couple of adults. I recommend it.

An absolutely brilliant wildlife park. It covers a wide area with many bird species, deer and wallabies all free to roam among the remarkably tall trees. Lovely for a relaxing walk. There are also exotic birds and animals to see, including a red panda, emus, kookaburras, flamingos and marmosets. Well worth a visit 🦩🦩🦩🦩🦩😊
Kristian Þ★★★★★
This place is awesome. We visited the same weekend as doing the Monet gardens and honestly this was way better. The gardens are absolutely beautiful and there are antelope, flamingos, wallabies, peacocks and more just freely walking about whilst other animals can be found in their own enclosures or birds in aviaries. Staff were nice and explained we could leave our luggage in lockers in the picnic area over the road for which they gave us free tokens, so you don't need to drag your bags round if you're visiting with luggage (which was something we were worried about beforehand and couldn't find any information on). The village itself is quiet and quaint with a couple of bars and an upmarket brasserie
Silviu BB★★★★★
I was totally impressed. The animal park is impressive and unique as they are walking around you as you visit the park. And the little castle is quite a bonus.
Rayan Majoor★★★★☆
Beautiful parc with many old trees. Good size to spend a good part of your day here, the more so thanks to the spaceous design. The fact that you share this parc with many wild animals (especially birds) makes this a place unlike others, definitely recommended if you happen to be in the area. Only two "flaws" of the parc: - it is not allowed to eat within the parc, which forces the visitors to choose between really taking your time to enjoy the place with maybe a grumbling stomach, or leaving the parc to eat something (e.g. in the public parc on the other side of the road) maybe sooner than you wanted to; - the animals that are not walking freely (i.e. the monkeys and a fair nummer of more flighty or special birds) have too little room to really behave naturally, and as a result sometimes look quite sad.
Lena Bondaruk★★★★★
Beautiful park with so many peacocks, it was pretty amazing! Also flamingos and other birds. Very quiet on a week day, we visited on Thursday. Only 25 min by train from Dieppe.

This small park deserves a bit more attention from the town hall. A few more attractions for the large number of children living nearby wouldn't hurt. Despite this, my daughters enjoy playing there.
Mimi S★★★☆☆
A great place that's good for children after the health crisis; it's clean and has lovely greenery. My only complaint is about the municipal workers who come to close it an hour or even an hour and a half before the posted closing time. And when you politely point it out to them, they don't like it and it's disrespectful.
Mykola Synelnyk★★★★★
Even a wonderful and unexpected place in the middle of the city. A corner of living and wild nature next to a playground, a city for rest and work. A cognitive, even scientific place. It has an interesting history. There is also a sports ground and an area for walking animals. There is a place where you can relax: read, lie down, dream, chat. There is also Flaubert's Wall, a work of art with his ambiguous statements. There is also a small garden cooperative here. A very friendly place.
Bruno Wils★★★★☆
A pleasant surprise. A place surrounded by buildings where children can play, including basketball, while parents relax in the shade of a beautiful tree or play pétanque. A place to be preserved.

Tips for Visiting Rouen’s Parks and Gardens

A little planning goes a long way when visiting Rouen’s outdoor spaces. The following tips will help you avoid common frustrations, respect local customs, and enjoy each garden at its best—whether you have a full afternoon or just thirty minutes to spare.

Check seasonal opening hours. Some gardens close earlier in winter or lock gates at dusk. Always confirm current hours on the city’s official website or signage at the entrance before making a special trip.

Bring a small picnic, but pack out your trash. Many parks have benches and lawns ideal for a simple lunch. A baguette, cheese, and fruit from a nearby market make a perfect break, but bins are not always plentiful.

Wear comfortable walking shoes. Several of Rouen’s best green spaces sit on slopes or require a short uphill walk. Cobblestones and gravel paths are common, so sturdy footwear will keep the experience pleasant.

Visit early or late for quiet moments. Parks fill with families and groups on sunny weekends and weekday afternoons. Early morning and early evening offer softer light, fewer people, and a more peaceful atmosphere.

Respect the grass and flower beds. Many French parks have areas where sitting on the lawn is allowed and others where it is not. Look for signs, and when in doubt, follow what local visitors are doing.

Rouen’s parks are not just afterthoughts to the city’s famous monuments—they are essential parts of its identity. A walk through the Jardin des Plantes or a bench stop on the Côte Sainte-Catherine can shift your entire impression of the city, revealing a slower, greener, more personal side.

Whether you are visiting for a day or a week, make time for at least one garden beyond the cathedral square. The contrast between Rouen’s dense medieval center and its open green spaces is part of what makes the city so memorable.
