Avignon carries a reputation built on papal history, the broken bridge of song, and theatrical summer festivals. Yet beyond the stone walls and cobbled lanes lies a softer, greener rhythm that often goes unnoticed by first-time visitors. The city’s parks and gardens offer a quiet counterpoint to the crowded Place de l’Horloge, providing shaded benches, formal flowerbeds, and sweeping views of the Rhône.
For locals, these green spaces are an extension of daily life—a place to read the morning paper, walk the dog, or let children burn off energy after school. For travelers, they provide a chance to slow down, catch your breath, and experience Avignon the way residents do. Many of these gardens sit directly beside major monuments, making them easy to weave into a day of sightseeing without adding extra transit time.
The horticultural character of Avignon reflects its Mediterranean climate. You will find plane trees offering dense shade, sculpted boxwood, gravel pathways, and the scent of lavender and rosemary in the warmer months. Fountains play a central role too, cooling the air and adding a gentle soundtrack to an afternoon pause. Understanding this local landscape style helps you appreciate why each garden feels distinct despite sharing similar plant palettes.
Accessibility varies from one site to the next. Some are flat, paved, and fully wheelchair-friendly, while others climb rocky outcrops with uneven steps. Knowing what to expect before you go allows you to match a garden to your energy level, mobility needs, or simply the kind of experience you want—whether that is a panoramic viewpoint, a picnic lawn, or a hidden rose arbor.
This guide draws on the practical details that matter when planning a visit: location, atmosphere, seasonal highlights, and nearby landmarks. It is written for travelers who want more than a quick photo stop. These are places to linger, observe, and let Avignon reveal its quieter character.
Below is a curated selection of the most rewarding parks and gardens in and immediately around Avignon, chosen for their beauty, historical interest, and genuine local value.

I bet lots of tourists don't even know these gardens are here. But what a gem. When facing the Palace, walk up one of the ramps or stairs to the left and you'll eventually reach a high garden with the most magnificent views over the Rhone, Pont D'Avignon and city. We walked up around 7.30am and had the place almost to ourselves. Very peaceful with just the bird song. Highly recommend 🙌

Lovely garden easily accessible after visiting Palais des Papes. Seems to be very popular with local families (at mid-day Monday). Beautiful river views from the terrace, however I would not go out of the way to visit the park since it’s relatively small.

Beautiful place to have a brief rest and escape from the sun. Lovely views and a well maintained park with benches, toilets and a little pop up cafe. Worth an early morning visit in particular

It's a very small garden but it's pretty, with fragrant herbs and flowers. Entry was included with the tickets we got for the castle, dont think i would have wanted to pay for it otherwise.
Samantha Platt★★★☆☆
These garden are beautiful but they are relatively small.
We purchased a 3 pack ticket which gave us entry to the palace, the gardens and the bridge for just £17.
We visited in the afternoon and perhaps the lighting and photographs would have been better in the morning.
Worth a visit and very well maintained.
Seokjin Ham★★★★☆
Located on the eastern side of the Palais des Papes, these gardens once served as a private retreat and botanical garden for the popes during the Middle Ages. Today, visitors can access the gardens through the palace itself.
※ Included in the Avignon City Pass.
Enjoy life★★☆☆☆
Real disappointing knowing that it's a garden with wine leaves, rosemary and other aromatic herbs and artichokes ... for a Palace's garden it's a bit light and out of purpose ! Let alone that you have to pay 5 Euros for this ...
Tom G★★★★☆
Thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The iPads were useful but were a distraction. If more if the information views were in English, would have made the tour more fluid. Desired more information on what parts of the buildings were reconstructed or original. Feature information and subsequent history post the popes was lacking. Was disappointed with having to pay a fee for the gardens which were a disappointment and did not meet expectations.

Just some greenery in the passage from papal palace, not worth to be a destination of its own, unless you happen to pass by.
Seokjin Ham★★★★☆
Named after Pope Urban V, a 14th-century pontiff, this urban orchard garden lies just below the eastern slope of the Palais des Papes. Originally, the area served as agricultural land owned by the papal court during the medieval period. In 2012, the city of Avignon, in collaboration with local organizations, revitalized the site as an urban ecological garden. Today, it blends historic continuity with sustainable city gardening, offering a peaceful, green retreat within walking distance of the old city.

Clean and quiet in the urban center. Play ground is for bigger kids than our one year-old but still nice place for her to walk around. Also, if you’re not parents, it opens at 7:30 AM

Small hidden park with water fountains. Ideal for cooling off in the hot summer days especially with kids.

A small well maintained oasis a few minutes from Les Halles.
A few benches and very peaceful in the midst of a lot of concrete. Worth the effort to find this beautiful garden. There is a small playground.

A small park on a street corner, right in the city center. A cool and shady oasis. A lovely playground for children. Water fountain.
It's a shame about the lack of maintenance. (I saw it during a heatwave).

One of the rare children play grounds in Avignon!
Thibault Lejeune★☆☆☆☆
At first glance, this playground seems peaceful and pleasant, with facilities that are quite well-designed for young children. But in reality, safety leaves much to be desired. Many older children, even teenagers, come to play soccer right in the middle of the areas reserved for younger children, smoke, and sometimes even drink right next to the slides. The toddlers try their best to enjoy the space, but it's difficult to let them play peacefully under these conditions.
The neighborhood, once quieter, has unfortunately changed, and there is no visible police presence or park attendant. Where are they? Once again, we're told about overloaded schedules at the town hall… But in the meantime, it's the parents who have to take matters into their own hands to protect their children. Thanks again to the Avignon town hall for this exemplary "oversight."
Alexandre Leca (innervisionary)★★★☆☆
A rather pleasant and quiet spot, although the covered area could use some cleaning of bird droppings. The population is very diverse; sometimes you hesitate to let your children play, but the play equipment is in very good condition and the atmosphere is friendly nonetheless.
Celine Buchaillard★★☆☆☆
What a disappointment. The manager was unfriendly. The waitresses were pleasant but seemed a bit lost. But worst of all, the portions were tiny and insufficient. A shame, given the high price and the otherwise enchanting setting.

- benches for sitting.
- a small playground for toddlers.
- a meeting place for high school students between 12 and 2 pm during their lunch break.

The park and lake are nice for a short walk. There are benches everywhere and a small playground for toddlers.
PANA★★★★☆
Beautiful park, but please avoid throwing your rubbish in the water; it's a sad sight.
Eria Cathalifaud★★★★☆
It needs some maintenance (bench needs repairing, table needs cleaning). The water is very polluted, and some parts of the lake sometimes turn into dumps (it's fairly clean at the moment). A beautiful park, one of the only real parks in Avignon. It sometimes feels like Canada. Locals also call it "Duck Park" because of the ducks, swans, and geese that inhabit it, and sometimes seagulls. Very recently, a pair of great cormorants stayed there.

Charming cozy park in the city center with a few statues, garden and remnants of historic ruins of Gothic cloister. Originally the square was the site of botanical garden in 19th century, and you can unmistakably see this origin in park’s layout.
Maxi Minimalist★★★★☆
Small garden with old stones and colourful trees nearby one of the main gates to the old city, lpcatwd just behind the Tourism promotion board (Office du Tourisme). Clean, quiet and pleasant, a lovely place for a nap or a conversation with a good friend under the trees' canopy. This is a non-smoking zone.

Small but charming, with trees, benches, and a fountain, Agricol Perdiguier Park is very pleasant. You can admire the architecture of the Saint Martial Temple in peace and quiet. Be sure to also see the bust of Agricol Perdiguier at the entrance to the square.

Becca Técher★★★★★
We discovered a historical gem: a magnificent building surrounded by a well-maintained park where it's easy to find a place to relax (picnic tables, deck chairs). Besides the bird species you might spot and the variety of trees you can admire during a stroll, there's a lovely children's playground with a nearby water feature, as well as a still-usable ping-pong table and a pétanque court. (The only downside: the foosball table is damaged and not all the pieces are there).
In short, a wonderful discovery and a lovely walk, accessible and free!
Paap Demba Ndiaye★★★★☆
A beautiful park right in the centre of Avignon. Very suitable for children's games with plenty of greenery and space.
Plasman Lucas★★★★★
A truly beautiful park! Throughout the day, we encountered several animal species, such as a wild Naël, one of the most harmless and slowest-moving creatures in the park! It doesn't exceed 2 km/h, so there's no need to be wary! It won't catch you unless you take more than 24 hours to make a round trip!

The Papal Palace in Avignon is a place I had dreamed of visiting for a very long time.
It is incredibly beautiful, atmospheric, and absolutely massive — a place you truly need to experience in person.
Take your time for it. Before visiting, grab a delicious ice cream, enjoy a cup of coffee, and then simply go and immerse yourself in this beautiful place — its atmosphere, incredible history, stunning gardens, spiral staircases, and the grand architectural vision of the entire palace.
I highly recommend walking around Avignon first, then visiting the Papal Palace and truly soaking in the history of France — a magnificent country with an incredible heritage.
Mike Z★★★★☆
It is most popular visitor attraction in Avignon. The exterior architecture is grand and impressive, but not so much on the inside as there is no period furniture to make visit experience richer. Few rooms with leftover original frescos… Here is the positive note though: it is the only museum in the city open on Mondays.
Ktpearie★★★★★
The Palais des Papes is an absolute must-see in Avignon. The scale alone is extraordinary, and it is hard not to be impressed walking through a 14th-century palace that once stood at the center of the papacy in Europe. The Gothic architecture, massive halls, courtyards, and surviving painted rooms make the history feel unusually tangible. One of the defining sights of Avignon and an easy 5/5.
C J★★★★★
Just awe inspiring. We almost had every room to ourselves. We got there as it opened at 9am, which I recommend. It's just an incredible self guided tour through history. Each doorway leads to something new. I'll put a photo at the end, as I circled back in to see how busy it was at 10am... Yikes
Volodymyr Romenskiy★★★★☆
Interesting. But I would say there are plenty more to see in Avignon and if one has a limited time choose carefully. Beautiful frescoes but not much paints.
Practical Tips for Visiting Avignon’s Parks and Gardens
A little local knowledge goes a long way in making your green-space visits more comfortable and rewarding. The following tips reflect how Avignon’s climate, layout, and culture shape the experience of using these outdoor spaces throughout the year.
Visit early or late in summer. Avignon can feel intensely hot between noon and 4 p.m. from June through August. Most gardens are far more pleasant before 11 a.m. or after 5 p.m., when the light softens and the shade deepens. Carrying water is essential, even for short walks.
Check seasonal opening hours. Some gardens close earlier in winter or shut entirely during periods of high wind, especially those on exposed heights like the Rocher des Doms. Municipal green spaces occasionally close for maintenance or event setup, so a quick check at the tourist office can save a wasted trip.
Wear suitable footwear. Gravel paths, uneven stone steps, and dusty slopes are common. Flat sandals may be fine for formal parterres, but anything involving a climb or a riverside path is easier in cushioned walking shoes.
Pack a small picnic, but respect the rules. Many parks welcome picnickers on lawns or designated benches. Avoid spreading out on formal flowerbeds or blocking narrow walkways. Some gardens have nearby bakeries and markets, making it easy to assemble a simple lunch of bread, cheese, and fruit.
Combine gardens with nearby landmarks. The best way to experience Avignon’s green spaces is to weave them into a walking route. A morning at the market can flow into a shaded garden break, which then leads to a museum or viewpoint. This approach reduces backtracking and gives your feet a rest between cultural stops.
Look for drinking fountains. Public water fountains appear in several parks and along main pedestrian routes. Refilling a reusable bottle is cheaper and more sustainable than buying plastic bottles, especially during the hot festival weeks.
Be mindful of quiet zones. Some gardens, particularly those near residential buildings or historic cloisters, function as peaceful retreats. Keep phone calls brief, use headphones for music, and let the space retain its calm atmosphere.
Avignon rewards travelers who allow themselves unstructured time outdoors. A bench under a plane tree, the sound of a fountain, or a sudden view of the Rhône can become the most memorable part of your day. These green spaces do not demand tickets or timed entries; they simply ask you to pause and notice the city from a different angle.
As you plan your itinerary, leave room for spontaneity. The best garden moments often happen when you turn a corner without expectation and find a shaded path, a quiet rose bed, or a view across the rooftops that feels entirely your own. That is the quiet gift of Avignon’s parks and gardens, and it is available in every season.
