Cannes is a city that seduces the senses long before the first dish arrives at the table. Between the sweep of the Croisette, the moored yachts in the Vieux Port, and the cinematic glow of the Palais des Festivals, there is a culinary energy that feels distinctly international.
Yet for all the glamour of ProvenΓ§al fine dining and Mediterranean seafood, sometimes the palate craves the precision of sushi, the comfort of a steaming bowl of ramen, or the caramelized crunch of teppanyaki. Japanese cuisine in Cannes has evolved into a sophisticated scene that rivals the cityβs French brasseries.
The challenge for visitors and locals alike is separating the truly exceptional omakase counters from the tourist-friendly spots that rely on location rather than craft. The difference often comes down to rice temperature, fish sourcing, and the quiet confidence of an itamae who has sharpened his knives for decades.
In this guide, you will find a curated selection of the most compelling Japanese tables in Cannes. Each entry has been evaluated for ingredient quality, authenticity of technique, consistency of service, and the overall atmosphere that makes a meal linger in memory.
Whether you are looking for a discreet sushi bar after a film screening, a lively izakaya for late-night skewers, or a refined kaiseki experience overlooking the Mediterranean, this list offers something for every mood and budget.
Below, you will discover the addresses that local food writers, hospitality professionals, and discerning residents return to again and again. These are the places where the seafood tastes as bright as the CΓ΄te dβAzur air, and where the hospitality feels as warm as the Riviera sun.

Surprisingly really good experience. Already the fact that the chef is Japanese suggested confidence in this actually being a real Japanese cuisine. The menu was bit limited this week but the chef went out of his way to prepare his own creations and it was delicious. Service was really caring and attentive! Definitely would go back!

Such a lovely experience here. The food was honestly amazing - everything we ordered was full of flavour and extremely well done and well presented.
The service was also amazing, friendly and attentive and made us feel really comfortable and very special.
The place had a lovely ambience all round and a beautiful outside area.
Definitely one of my favourite places in Cannes, would 100% recommend!

We hosted a large gathering for 12 people at Shiso and it was the most perfect, cosy ambient setting, with an exceptional and exciting set menu which got everyone talking and tucking into! Both the taste and the presentation of the sushi in the sushi boat was spectacular, the tofu wok in a sweet sauce was utterly delicious, the mochi's at dessert were a mochi lovers dream (I loved the lychee). Shiso's team provided a charming and friendly, efficient service and I'd come back again in a heartbeat. Thank you for having us!

The ambiance of this place was the best part. The beef tataki was overcooked on the edges (burnt) and the cut was extremely thick and smothered in sauce which took away from the flavour. The sushi was also nauseatingly covered in sauce. The black cod miso was definitely the highlight. Overall, extremely expensive dinner and we left unsatisfied.

With the odd ai generated menus the food was not good . Broth was flavourless like literally had no garlic flavour , pork was underseasoned with no flavour either and the noodles were just ok. Egg was also stone cold and overcooked overall a disappointing experience this is not authentic Japanese ramen itβs anything but that. Itβs a noodle shop run by Chinese with Japanese decor. Thereβs nothing βauthenticallyβ Japanese about the food.

The place is truly great, it has a great ambiance and the food is really tasty. The sole downside is that the person who went with me got the wrong drinks and the fact that some elements are made by ai. But anyway the food and the people, which are the most important in a restaurant are truly great.

Good food, but expensive for what it is.
We were staying at the Mondrian, and we felt like having Japanese. There's quality there and we enjoyed the meal, but it just felt steep once the bill landed.
Having said that, our waiter, Tom, was AMAZING! He was super attentive, friendly and we enjoyed talking to him. If I could give more than 5 stars for the service, I would.
Worth a visit if you're not watching the spend too closely, otherwise manage your expectations on price.

Dark, dry and almost black tuna and low grade salmon do not belong at a restaurant. Blunt and dry taste. Someone walks over with pitchers of soy sauce, places a few drops of another average-level soy sauce disappearsβ¦ thatβs all you get apparently. Go elsewhere- bad sushi like this should jot be served at a beach city restaurant ever.

Cute little place with pavement seating and friendly, helpful service. The food isn't terribly Japanese but it was good. We had a selection of sushi (good but the wasabi had zero taste), yakitori (good but quite sweet), gyoza (quite thick fried shell but very tasty), and a beef wok (slightly goopy overpowering sauce but also tasty). Would come back, especially for the sushi, and because the owner was nice.

Mido was one of those places where dinner naturally turned into a full night out. The atmosphere was amazing from the moment we arrivedβgreat music, people dancing, everyone in a good mood, and the whole place had an infectious energy that made it impossible not to enjoy yourself.
The sushi was honestly the highlight for me. Everything tasted incredibly fresh, the presentation was beautiful, and every roll we ordered was delicious. You can tell a lot of care goes into the food, even though the vibe is fun and lively.
What I loved most was how effortlessly the evening flowed. We started by enjoying the food, then before we knew it everyone around us was singing, dancing, and just having a great time. It never felt forcedβit was simply one of those nights where the atmosphere made the experience unforgettable.

We went here cause they had good reviews. I doubt they are real. Its impossible this place has good reviews.
Waited an hour and got 1/4 of my order and told them to cancel the rest.
I got 90% rice and a tiny bit of fish. So if you like eating rice balls as sushi this is your place.
The whole restaurant was waiting for food. Maybe 4 rolls came out in an hour.

Extremely long waiting. Wasabi they give you as if they have stolen it somewhere and not very much. We asked for some more 2 or 3 times. And again very slowly. Tuna seemed to be frozen not one time. The digital menu is not clear. So with no waiter you can not find what you want. And any way you should make an order digitally. Our first and last experience there.

I ordered two different sushi portions, and both were extremely small. The photos on the menu make them look much bigger, but in reality the portions were tiny and definitely not worth the price.
My boyfriend ordered a chicken bowl, it was fine.
I also tried baked rolls (5 pieces) that were supposed to be with crab, but they were mostly just rice with avocado and a very small amount of surimi. This did not match the description at all.
Because of the small portions and the mismatch between the menu and the actual food, I wouldnβt come back.

I appreciate how the waiters are very friendly it was the best part of the experience. The atmosphere is also nice. But the food is seriously overpriced for its quantity and in my opinion it was nothing so exceptional in taste. The cucumber salad was very regular. And the handrolls were very small with very little filling itβs unjustified. The Maguro crudo was the only thing I tried that was really tasty everything else was just alright and way too small. It would have been good if they took payments at the table instead of making people go up front and stand in line to pay, it wasnβt a comfortable ending to the dinner experience.

People working here are very welcoming and genuinely friendly.
In the evening it is very quite here, the only noise you can here itβs AC, but it is very pleasant and going along with the atmosphere of this place.
I mentioned quality of the food already, I can add that it was served pretty quick. And they also manage to prepare other orders for delivery.

A fantastic place! We ordered the curry rice, which was full of flavor and cooked perfectly. The portions were huge, and the owner was so warm and hospitable, making us feel very welcome. Everything was fresh, tasty, and reasonably priced. One of our favorite meals during our trip. Highly recommend!

Disappointing sushi place just outside the city center , despite the 4.7 mark
Good wakame salad and decent salmon sashimi but the sushis were as sad as it gets.
Nice smiling staff
Will I go back? NEVER

The food was cooked quickly and everything was incredibly fresh and delicious! When a lot of places were closed before French dinner time, FUJISHI was open. Itβs more of a place for locals than for tourists, which was a nice discovery for us! Definitely coming back!

Excellent service, the food was amazing and the employees really gentile. If you also consider the prices, it becomes an incredible option to eat well and enjoy a night out in Cannes.
How to Choose the Right Japanese Restaurant in Cannes
Not all Japanese restaurants in Cannes are created equal, and knowing what to look for can elevate your meal from ordinary to exceptional. The cityβs dining scene is competitive, which means the best establishments survive by paying obsessive attention to detail. The following practical tips will help you match the right restaurant to your occasion, appetite, and expectations.
Check the rice before you judge the fish. In high-quality sushi, the shari (seasoned rice) should be slightly warm, loosely packed, and gently vinegared. If the rice is cold, hard, or overly sweet, the restaurant is likely cutting corners regardless of how fresh the fish looks.
Look for Japanese chefs or long-trained European itamae. While not a strict requirement, a kitchen led by a Japanese chef or a European chef with formal training in Japan often signals a deeper understanding of knife skills, aging techniques, and seasonal rhythm. Many of the best counters in Cannes display their chefβs credentials or history.
Lunch sets reveal value and skill. If you want to test a restaurant without committing to a full omakase dinner, book a weekday lunch set. The best kitchens treat lunch with the same seriousness as dinner, offering chirashi, bento, or sushi assortments that showcase their sourcing and portion balance.
Ask about fish provenance and seasonality. A trustworthy Japanese restaurant should be able to tell you where the tuna, sea bream, or salmon comes from and when it arrived. Vague answers or a reliance on frozen, generic imports is a sign that you may be paying for location rather than quality.
Watch how they handle soy sauce and wasabi. Authentic sushi bars apply nikiri (a seasoned soy glaze) directly to the fish, and real wasabi is grated to order. If the default is a bowl of commercial soy sauce and a dollop of green paste, adjust your expectations accordingly.
Book the counter for the full experience. Sitting at the sushi counter allows you to watch the chefβs rhythm, ask questions, and receive each piece at its optimal temperature. In Cannes, where many restaurants cater to a glamorous but distracted crowd, counter seats often reward engaged diners with off-menu specials.
Pair with sake, not just Bordeaux. The best Japanese restaurants in Cannes have invested in thoughtful sake lists, including junmai ginjo and daiginjo selections that pair beautifully with Mediterranean fish. Ask your server for a pairing suggestion rather than defaulting to the wine list.
Cannes may be famous for its rosΓ© and bouillabaisse, but its Japanese dining scene has quietly become one of the most reliable and exciting on the French Riviera. From hushed omakase rooms to buzzing yakitori bars, the city offers a breadth of Japanese cooking that rewards the curious eater.
The true pleasure of eating Japanese food in Cannes lies in the contrast: the precision of Tokyo meeting the produce of the Mediterranean, the calm of a tatami room steps from the flash of the Croisette. Whether you are in town for a week or a lifetime, these tables offer a delicious reminder that great cuisine knows no borders.
