12 Best Japanese Restaurants in Annecy

Annecy, often called the “Venice of the Alps,” is celebrated for its crystalline lake, winding medieval canals, and breathtaking mountain vistas. While the region is famous for Savoyard classics like fondue and tartiflette, the city has quietly cultivated a vibrant international dining scene. For those craving precision, umami, and delicate flavors, the local Japanese culinary landscape offers a compelling alternative to heavy alpine cheese.

Finding an authentic Japanese meal in a French alpine town might seem surprising, but Annecy’s residents and visitors have embraced the cuisine wholeheartedly. From high-end omakase experiences to casual ramen counters, the city provides a diverse range of options for sushi lovers and noodle enthusiasts alike. The proximity to local freshwater fish and a general French appreciation for high-quality produce ensures that ingredients are often exceptionally fresh.

However, the popularity of Japanese food has led to a saturation of options, making it difficult to distinguish truly authentic kitchens from generic "fusion" traps. Many restaurants boast about their sushi, but few master the subtle art of rice seasoning or the precise knife work required for sashimi. To help you navigate this culinary scene, we have evaluated menus, ingredient sourcing, and chef credentials to curate a definitive list.

Whether you are looking for a quick, warming bowl of ramen after a day on the lake or an elegant evening of nigiri paired with sake, there is a table for you. This guide focuses on establishments that prioritize authentic techniques, from the temperature of the rice to the quality of the soy sauce. We have considered ambiance, service, and value to ensure a well-rounded dining experience.

Below, you will find the definitive list of the best Japanese restaurants in Annecy. These selections represent a mix of traditional izakayas, contemporary sushi bars, and specialty noodle houses that have consistently impressed local food critics and residents.

A quick stop for lunch on our way to Geneva Airport. Most of the restaurants were already full, so we got lucky when someone had just finished eating here. The food was great. The place was a bit tight and compact, but the service was excellent, which made the experience better overall.
Suzanne Jansen★★★★★
Friendly service, good sushi. Nice spot for watching people pass by.

I arrived 10 minutes before the restaurant opens, good thing i did because after that it was full of people. The restaurant only seats 8 people inside, and another 10 outside. The dishes were amazing! Absolutely delicious! Ratings do not lie! 😂 Price wise it was ok also. You’ll be full just by ordering the bento set. Will definitely come back here on my next trip to the lovely city of Annecy 🖤🖤
Neil Thompson★★★★★
Outstanding! We had a salmon bowl and a tuna bowl and both were fresh and delicious. Great friendly service and a good amount of outdoor seating. Definitely worth the stop
Hannah Muscat★★★★★
Amazing food. Honestly made my day. Only regret is I didn't order more. Super friendly servers. The dorayaki was the only downside. It felt like it wasn't cooked enough in the middle but still edible. I recommend this place. It's just so incredibly delicious. The gyoza was heavenly. Made me wish I lived in Annecy just to eat here again. Cost me 33 euro .

I visited Annecy and came across this teppan yaki and wanted to try it out! Service was amazing, the chef’s skills were impressive and the food was absolutely delicious 😋 Highly highly recommend to check this one out!!
Paweł Książek★★★★★
Amazing, nice and "entertaining" restaurant. Good is made and served in front of you at the table. It is prepared on a grill plate that is on every table. Cheffes skills are good but most important, the ford is very good for medium price. You can choose from different sets and each of them is made for you one by one. I totally recommend this restaurant 😁
Fausto Giani★★★★★
Fantastic restaurant! Great atmosphere and a fun way to have dinner! Highly recommend
Aditya Dharnidharka★★★★☆
A decent offering for Annecy. The chef clearly tried hard to impress and certainly wowed diners experiencing teppanyaki for the first or second time. To earn anything above four stars, however, he would need to refine his knife skills and bring more creativity to his theatrics. The range of sauces also felt limited and left me wanting more. That said, the effort was evident, so I would still give it four stars.

Amazing restaurant that everybody will enjoy the welcome of the owners and also their food. Do not miss going there if you come to Annecy. Do not forget, you need to reserve in advance :):):)

Really fresh food served with salads. Nice waiter. She was quick but it feels rough on her take everything:take order, cleaning, cooking, billing. Very beautiful place for this restaurant. Small but kind of cozy.

Really fresh and delicious sushi and miso soup!!! Great, warm and friendly service from what seems to be a small family run business. We shared this "Lovely" sushi box which was great, although I would recommend they consider adding/substituting a few basic maki (instead of some of the cheese ones) to add a little more variety. Of course, one could also order the maki separately. Toilet available. A few seats indoors and outdoors, but one can also do takeaway. Loved it - highly recommended!!!
Yu-Hsuan Cheng Bachmann★★★★★
The sushi is fresh made and the price for sashimi is super good. Gyoza is also tasty. The service is really nice and friendly. We arrived at 13:30pm and they closed at 14:00pm but they let us finish lunch without stress around 15:00. We will always come over when we are in Annecy.

Happy returning customers review😀 We visited twice during our stay in Annecy for an early dinner takeaway and a quick lunch dining in before catching our bus. We enjoyed the food very much, good portion and express service. We particularly enjoyed our yakitori chicken bowls, eel chirashi, salmon avocado chirashi. Cooked and torched dishes were tasty and sashimi were fresh. The restaurant owner guy was professional, cheerful and welcoming!
Carmen Carrión★★★★★
This place is incredibly cozy, and the food is absolutely delicious. The owners are welcoming, kind, and attentive, making you feel welcomed from the moment you walk in. The service was exceptional, and the sushi was freshly made, beautifully presented, and full of flavor. It's rare to find a place that delivers both outstanding food and such genuine hospitality. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a 10/10 dining experience. Thank you so much for your service! 🙂

I wasn't expecting much. I was just looking for a spot to escape the heatwave. While they did have AC, it wasn't particularly powerful, but it was still much more comfortable than sitting out on the terrace. I ordered the poke bowl and it was fantastic. It was a great combination of fresh fruit, vegetables, and salmon. Also, their sweet shoyu is a game changer. It is perfect for dipping sushi and much more balanced than the standard salty soy sauce.
John Jordan★★★★★
I wasn't expecting much when I came here. I was just hoping for edible sushi. The whole operation feels "fast food" so I had low expectations. I was pleasantly surprised, and honestly the sushi was better than what I get back home in South Florida. I am not a big fan of Salmon, and it seems 99% of sushi in France is some form of Salmon. I was able to get enough tuna to make me happy, though. We had a nice dinner and the friendly staff spoke English too.

My mum had the fried udon and absolutely loved it. The place was spotless, and the service was warm and attentive. We’d definitely come back again.
Olha L★★★★☆
The waitress was very kind and friendly, which made the experience really pleasant. The crunchy sushi(salmon and tuna) were delicious, and although the rainbow roll set seemed like it had been kept in the fridge and wasn’t as fresh as expected, it was still an enjoyable meal overall.

Oh WoW! The food is heavenly good! I only ordered a spicy miso ramen with chashu, the ramen noodle is aldente, the soup is tasty and mild spicy. What exceptional is the chashu that they grilled before. I’ll definitely come back to taste other dishes. Highly recommended 🩷❤️🧡💙🩵💚🩶🤍💜💛

Cute little spot in residential area away from the tourist spots! Early evening meal a couple of times was great. Beef noddles, and chicken noddle big bowls were great.

After a long day at the beach, we happened upon Tapaoo Sushi by chance: But it's worth the stop! A small standard sushi menu, a very friendly young team, relaxed outdoor seating on the terrace, not overcrowded area like Annecy City Centre (just 1 km away). A laid-back atmosphere and fair prices. Don‘t expect Japanese fine dining, but good value for money Sushi The sushi specials, the vanilla mochi, and a good miso soup are particularly noteworthy.

Even if it's a bit far away for walking from the city center, it's worth visiting! We had ramen and it was almost perfect! 5 stars
Brian Lim★★★★★
Came here for dinner and was lucky to get a table for 3. The restaurant quickly became busy with delivery orders. We ordered ramen kaizen, ramen beef, chashu donburi, yuzu iced tea, and matcha mochi. We enjoyed the ramen, especially the beef; the slices were well-seasoned, and the broth was rich. However, the yuzu tea was bland, while the lemonade had a hint of ginger, which my daughter did not enjoy. Overall, we were glad to dine here.
Chong Ong★★★★★
Surprisingly high quality Ramen and Donburi dishes. We were looking for some warm food during a cold wet day and really enjoyed their ramen and rice dishes

Outside Japan, it is not that easy to find good ramen place. I had chasu ramen, the noodle was very good, the soup was bit salty for my taste. The pork was also tender.
Pijus Girdziušas★★★★★
Oh, come on... This was best ramen I've ever had. Mouth still doesn't want to accept bowl is empty. Bouillon was freshly made and full, beef was delicious, noodles cooked to perfection. A bit spicy but overall - very well balanced ramen.

Decent Ramen in Annecy. Picked it up about an hour ago and they forgot the eggs in both Ramens. The wife was pretty disappointed.

Great service, gorgeous little restaurant and nice presentation. Unfortunately the taste was just not part of the experience. I ordered a Beef ramen and although the noodles were good, the beef itself was bland and flavorless and the broth was underwhelming. Will try again in the future as i might have caught them on a bad day.

We visited this place while returning from Chamonix to Paris. I tried the poulet Donburi and chocolate mochi. Amazing presentation and taste. Would definitely recommend the Donburi

This place has amazing sushi but it’s a small spot with few seats so it’s best to get takeout unless space is available. There are plenty of options as you can either grab something from the shelves or order from the menu. In addition to sushi there’s also a large variety of drinks and desserts including Asian desserts and drinks which are amazing. Highly recommend if you’re in Annecy and looking for sushi.

This was one of the most difficult restaurants to review because the ladies working there were very polite and attaintive, also as it is a persuit for a family business which I respect. However, I must be fair to every shop review so I'll say what I thought very openly. The food was clean but not very tasty. I'm against stocking on sushi ingredients in the fridge and this didn't taste fresh, it tasted frozen. As for the rice, it's not made with rice vinegar which gives the sushi the distinct flavor, the tuna was not fresh for sure. The soy sauce was not a good kind as it was salty but lacked on flavor. The wasabi is not natural wasabi, it's imitation wasabi. The rolls had fried onion on top which was not for me at all, but I tried the basic Nigiri style sushi with tuna, shrimp and salmon. It wasn't bad but wasn't amazing, then again for the price it is okay. I would recommend for them to have fresher ingredients with local salmon, try and cook the rice with non-alcoholic mirin made with rice vinegar, and finally include local fish on the menu to be fresh and surely try to add unagi or Japanese fresh water eel to the menu. Also, increase the meat portion on the pieces to balance the flavor or decrease the rice portion.

We wanted to have lunch at 12:10 on a Wednesday and the restaurant was empty. Nevertheless we entered it and a woman offered us a place. We studied the menu for at least five minutes and she didn’t came to ask for anything. She was at another table and made something on her computer and phone. We had the impression that there is nobody in the kitchen and as she didn’t attend us, we decided to leave the place. The following days after I didn’t see any other guests in the restaurant. Strange and I would not give it another try.

It's in an open area of a shopping mall, ground floor. Since I had no idea while looking at the map, it was quite confusing to find the place (given that the location in the map is actually wrong). A good thing is that there's nothing to worry about car parking, there's a huge mall parking lot. Although the service was attentive and they seemed busy handling takeaway orders and deliveries, the dishes fell short of expectations. The mahi mahi ceviche was particularly disappointing - it felt like an unsuccessful experiment where an overwhelming fruity flavor dominated the dish, leaving only the passion fruit notes distinguishable. The balance of flavors you'd expect in a traditional ceviche was missing entirely. The chicken strip rice bowl was okay, nothing particularly noteworthy.
Riri★★★★☆
I went there in a very sunny day, unfortunately the outdoor places are restricted in space. So you are stuck next to other people. Aside from this the food was amazing, the inside was nicely decorated too. The sushi with mango in was a 10/10. Service was nice only thing is that it was a bit difficult to reach our table due to space.

How to Choose the Right Japanese Restaurant

Selecting the right spot goes beyond simply finding a menu with raw fish on it. The difference between an average meal and an unforgettable one often lies in the details of preparation and ingredient sourcing. To ensure you have the best possible dining experience, consider the following expert tips before making your reservation or walking through the door.

Prioritize the Rice. In authentic Japanese cuisine, sushi is often judged by the shari (vinegared rice) rather than the fish. Look for restaurants that describe their rice as warm, loosely packed, and seasoned with a balanced blend of rice vinegar, sugar, and salt. If the rice is cold, dense, or flavorless, the sushi will fail regardless of the fish quality.

Look for Seasonal Specials. A truly skilled Japanese chef works with the seasons. Instead of a static menu featuring only salmon and tuna, look for boards or specials featuring seasonal catches or regional ingredients. In Annecy, this might mean freshwater fish like omble chevalier (Arctic char) prepared with Japanese techniques, indicating a chef who respects both local and Japanese terroir.

Beware of the "All-You-Can-Eat" Trap. While budget-friendly, "à volonté" (all-you-can-eat) formulas often sacrifice quality for quantity. These establishments typically serve pre-made rolls heavy on rice and cream cheese to fill you up quickly. For a true taste of Japanese craft, opt for à la carte dining where dishes are prepared to order.

Assess the Tea and Sake List. A restaurant that takes its beverage program seriously is usually serious about its food. The presence of high-quality green teas (like genmaicha or hojicha) and a curated selection of junmai or ginjo sake is a strong indicator of authenticity. If the only options are standard soda and generic wine, the kitchen may be catering to a tourist palate rather than culinary tradition.

Observe the Open Kitchen. If you can, sit at the counter or glance at the kitchen. A clean, organized workspace is non-negotiable. More importantly, watch how the chef handles the fish; look for precise, single-stroke cuts and careful plating. Hesitant knife work or pre-sliced fish sitting out at room temperature are red flags.

Exploring the Japanese dining scene in Annecy offers a delightful contrast to the heavy mountain cuisine of the region. It provides a lighter, refined option that still satisfies the need for warmth and comfort, especially during the cooler months. Whether you are a local looking for a new favorite spot or a tourist seeking a break from cheese and potatoes, these restaurants deliver an experience grounded in respect for ingredients.

Ultimately, the best meal is one that leaves you satisfied and curious to return. By choosing an establishment that values authenticity over shortcuts, you ensure that your dining experience matches the beauty and sophistication of Annecy itself. Enjoy your culinary journey through the flavors of Japan, right in the heart of the French Alps.
