Bordeaux is synonymous with world-class wine, but its culinary identity extends far beyond the vineyard. Over the last decade, the city has undergone a gastronomic renaissance, transforming from a traditional meat-and-potatoes town into a vibrant hub for international cuisine. Among this evolution, the Italian dining scene has become particularly competitive, offering everything from wood-fired Neapolitan pizza to handmade pasta and contemporary fine dining.
Finding a truly authentic plate of pasta or a perfectly charred crust in a city saturated with tourist traps can be challenging. While many restaurants claim to offer "authentic" Italian fare, only a select few master the delicate balance of high-quality imported ingredients, regional techniques, and the local French appreciation for fresh produce. This guide cuts through the noise to highlight the establishments that locals actually frequent.
We have evaluated these restaurants based on ingredient sourcing, pasta-making techniques, wine list curation, and consistency of service. Whether you are a tourist looking for a romantic dinner after a day of wine tasting in the Médoc, or a local seeking a reliable neighborhood trattoria, this list offers a range of price points and atmospheres. From the historic streets of the Chartrons district to the bustling terraces of Place du Parlement, these are the spots worth your reservation.
Understanding that "Italian" encompasses a vast array of regional cuisines, we have included specialists in Sicilian, Neapolitan, and Northern Italian cooking. Some of these venues are helmed by Italian expatriates who have brought their grandmother’s recipes to the Garonne, while others are French chefs who have trained extensively in Italy. Each brings a unique perspective to the table, ensuring that Bordeaux’s love affair with Italy continues to thrive.
Below, you will find our curated selection of the twelve best Italian restaurants currently operating in Bordeaux. We have focused on establishments that provide not just a meal, but a genuine cultural experience, balancing the rustic charm of a traditional osteria with the polish expected in one of France’s gastronomic capitals.

I had a wonderful experience at Palatino in Bordeaux. The restaurant itself is very spacious, beautifully decorated, and offers a warm and inviting atmosphere. There are plenty of tables where you can comfortably enjoy a meal with your partner or friends, but I would definitely recommend making a reservation in advance, as there is usually a line at the entrance.
As soon as you step inside, you are welcomed by a charming interior that gives off a stylish 50s-60s vibe. The ambiance is truly unique and adds a special touch to the whole dining experience.
The service is impressively fast, and the staff are incredibly friendly, polite, and attentive. As for the food, it was absolutely delicious. I visited with an Italian friend, and even he confidently approved the authenticity and quality of the dishes.
One of the things that stood out to me the most was the open kitchen located right in the center of the restaurant. Being able to see the food being prepared in front of you creates a strong sense of trust and highlights the cleanliness and transparency of the place.
At the end of your meal, you can conveniently pay through a QR code system provided on the menu. This makes it very easy to split the bill or pay individually without needing to call the staff.
Overall, I truly enjoyed my experience and would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Bordeaux. Thank you for the great ambiance, delicious food, and fast, clean, and excellent service!

Beautiful restaurant. Pizza was great. The rest of the menu did not live up to the 4.9 star review. Salad was under seasoned. Pesto sauce didn't have enough nuts to balance the strong basil.

We had excellent pizzas the other night at this really cool place. From the outside it looks tiny. But when you step inside, it was absolutely huge and jam-packed with noisy diners! It was fully booked but we got counter seats upstairs at the amazing cocktail bar. The all-Italian crew behind the bar never stopped for even a minute the whole time we were there. Great fun, good vibes, thanks to all the friendly, hard-working staff who create great energy!
Jeff Spencer★★★★☆
Classic choice of Italian intetnational cuisine alongside basics like pizza. Impudent enough to offer a range of good italian/sicilian wines in this delightful roman square in Bordeaux. Friendly if slow service, but a great place to watch the world go round.
María V★★★☆☆
Service was very kind, although a bit slow. And unfortunately we were incredibly disappointed with the consistency and flavour of our pizza. both the tomato sauce and the cheese, aka the essentials, tasted plain and a bit acidic to us. Cannot recommend. The burrata dish on the other hand was so amazing I would consider going back just to have it again and also give the pasta dishes a try.

Go for the trio of pizzettas, makes the decision easier. Lots of menu choices and open all day for a late lunch! Seats near the window are a little warm, door further inside to cool off. Salads are good too. Love their online bill payment, so no need to wait for your bill.

CroustilleTotale★★★☆☆
Showed up in a crowded (tables staked up), noisy, smoky restaurant (due to a burnt pizzas).
Service team was doing a good work to serve as much customers as possible.
Standard quality for an expensive price.
Know the brand from Paris, had a better experience.
Je suis probablement tombé au mauvais moment, mais je reconnais quand même une volonté de faire du volume en dépit de l’expérience.

Excellent service and friendly staff. Table for 2 can be a bit ‘cosy’ (quite close to the table next to you) inside but there is also outdoor seating which is better. The food was excellent and we would recommend. Good for groups.

Wow. This place was unreal. From the moment we sat down, Adelie and Ryan were amazing, taking time to run us through the menu and make great recommendations. We had the swordfish linguine and monkfish rigatoni for mains, luigi for entree and then the tiramisu (served straight from the bowl) and another traditional naples dessert. Everything was fresh and very well balanced. Top of the Bordeaux list - a must do.

It waa refreshing to experiemce Italian food which is regional compared to tourist pleasing pallatte. The pasta dishes had depth. Amazingly crafted cocktails and desserts are worth the trip.

Delicious Italian food near our hotel, my husband and I came on a night I was particularly craving some pasta.
I was not disappointed, the pasta is made fresh in-house. We ordered the vitello tonnato to share, each got pasta and were tempted by the grilled dishes (over charcoal!)
Every bite was delicious, I was surprised it wasn’t busier.

My daughter and I had the pleasure of eating at Boccaccio today. It’s a beautiful Sunday afternoon and the restaurant was busy. Nonetheless we were seated right away and service was quick and friendly. We had the Paccheri and papparadelle which were delicious. We also had a yummy Tiramisu. If you want to sit outside you’d better reserve. It’s definitely a wonderful Italian Restaurant. Grazie Mille !

We wanted to grab a quick bite across from our hotel while waiting for check-in, but it turned into a real gastronomic adventure. They serve only a few dishes, the menu changes daily, and you can order set menus only, with different combinations of a starter, main course, and dessert.
The food was absolutely outstanding. I originally ordered just a starter and a main, but enjoyed it so much that I ended up having dessert as well. Everything was delicious.
The only downside is that there is no children’s menu, so kids need to order the same dishes as adults, and the portions can be far too large for a child.

My family and I had a great lunch at Il Vicolo Rosso. They are serving delicious authentic Italian cuisine with a carefully curated menu that clearly prioritises quality over quantity (number of dishes). We tried everything on the menu, and every dish was excellent.
The atmosphere was warm and welcoming. A special touch was the owner taking the time to speak with us after the meal, showing genuine interest in our visit and our impressions of the food.
A truly memorable experience. Highly recommended!

Absolute gem in Bordeaux!
We had an amazing family dinner on the lovely terrace at Il Vicolo Rosso.
The menu is wonderfully straightforward, which makes choosing your meal super easy. The food is authentically Italian and absolutely delicious, the melanzane is so good, you’d honestly want to have it for breakfast alongside your morning coffee!
Even with the authentic Italian flavours, you get that charming, hospitable French service of Claire. She is exceptionally friendly and gave us incredible wine pairings that perfectly complemented our food.
An easy 5-star experience for our whole family. Highly recommended if you’re in Bordeaux!

Really good affordable sandwiches. I’d recommend creating your own; breaded chicken, basil/red pesto and adding pepper oil. Like the dessert options but if it was chilled I think it would taste more fresh

Not bad, but not the best focaccia I have eaten. It was a bit too thin and small focaccia. The ingredients and taste were okay, but not amazing.

Great food and great atmosphere! I came here as a student with my host family to celebrate my last day in France. The staff was very kind and patient even though I didn't speak French very well. The spaghetti was AMAZING and the server recommended a great wine pairing to go with it. The inside was air conditioned which was amazing with the recent heatwave. I highly recommend this location of you're looking for good authentic Italian food!

This place is awesome - the pastas, pizzas, drinks, service - all excellent. We decided to stay on the edge of Bordeaux center and having this restaurant nearby was amazing. Definitely check it out if you are nearby, but even if you are staying in the center and are craving Italian, you should come out here. Lovely outdoor area as well! An absolute must-visit when in Bordeaux!
We had the best pasta alle vongole we have ever eaten in our lives, truly mind-blowing 🍝 The lasagne was equally incredible and packed with flavor.

To be honest we were a little disappointed. The atmosphere is excellent. tables in a busy fun street. The pizza selection on the menu looks interesting. 6 not 4 cheese pizza as one example. The pizza when it came had a great looking crust but the base was very moist, sloppy almost. One small thing warmish Coke with one ice cube. I know we use more ice down under and more was bought when I asked but just a small detail. Apperol was strong.

Ordered 5 meals, the pizza came out uncooked and the dough was raw. Sent it back to the kitchen. Told them we don’t want another one and it still came out.
Meat balls came out frozen, but this was after the pizza incident but didn’t want to send it back as we were very hungry.
The candles are melting to the table and were melting into our drinks without us knowing.
Would not eat this kind of pasta at a school camp.
Jessica Peruzzi★★★☆☆
Actually not a bad place. BUT…. during colder days it is in the shadow. Polpete were overcooked, no Ketchup for fries for the kids, syrup no taste.
Collin Olson★★★★★
This is the best pasta I’ve had in France.
Texture of the pasta is truly al dente. Had the spicy vodka sauce dish with fresh mozzarella. The right amount of heat and balance of flavor. A wonderful depth of all the ingredients working together. My wife ordered the artichoke pasta and the charred artichokes were wonderfully done.
We sat outside at a small table during the early afternoon. After being seated, the waiter took notice that the sun was shining directly on me and offered for us to move tables.
Wifi is free and fast if you’re here for a while.
I would come back to the restaurant 10 times before going to another. Service was cordial, friendly, and courteous.
I highly recommend any pasta lover to come here.
Cindy LaBelle★★★★★
Excellent food with excellent service. The tiramisu was to die. Don’t hesitate just go.
Olga Mironenko★☆☆☆☆
Really bad - the worst italian food but super expensive. For example, tomato and mozarella salad (wasn’t even bufala just regular store mozarella) for 19€. Vitello tonato - have never seen the ratio of 1cm thick cuts with a little but of tuna sauce on top. The mains were almost not edible, Friend got a tuna lasagna - it was completely raw tuna with RAW hard pasta sheets, no salt, no sauce, on a massive bed of arugula. The octopus dish was chewier than gum, honestly a shame they killed an octopus for that. Foccacia - drier than store bought foccacia, hard as a rock, simple white bread.
Have travelled many countries and eaten in a lot of places, top 3 worst place. Really do not recommend, do not set your foot there.
Didn’t even take photos of the main dishes because we were so baffled after the entrees.

Absolutely delicious meal. Very fast, efficient and friendly service during lunch. All the pizzas looked very good, generous portions. Insalada Osteria was incredible and very filling: huge portion size with lots of lettuce, rocket, sundried tomatoes, chicken, prosciutto, burrata and croutons. Very tasty. The Amici Miei pizza was incredible: with meatballs on top and ricotta inside the pizza crust. Supper delicious. We thoroughly enjoyed our lunch and can't wait to be back. The restaurant interiors are very cute and the plates look like a piece of art. Grazie mille!

Since I’ve been in Bordeaux, these are the most generous and delicious pizzas I’ve ever tried!
We came around a month ago and had a good experience so we came back this week for lunch… the pizzas were absolutely DELICIOUS, ultra well served… you could taste everything! I didn’t even have time to take photo of mine but it had big chunks of delicious artichoke and Lots of mushrooms and even fresh basil.
The place is cozy and it takes you straight to the Amalfi coast with all their decoration and colorful plates and tables. Staff is friendly. I recommend 100%!
Practical Tips for Choosing the Best Italian Dining Experience
To truly enjoy the Italian culinary scene in Bordeaux, a little preparation goes a long way. The city operates on a distinct dining schedule, and the best tables are often booked days in advance, particularly during the summer months and the Bordeaux Wine Festival. Understanding how to navigate reservations, menu selection, and local dining etiquette will significantly enhance your experience and ensure you get the most authentic taste of Italy during your visit.
Book Ahead, Especially on Weekends: Bordeaux is a bustling city, and the top-tier Italian spots are small, intimate venues with limited seating. If you have your heart set on a specific pizzeria or trattoria, call or book online at least two to three days in advance. Walking in on a Friday or Saturday night will almost certainly result in a long wait or a polite refusal.
Look for DOP and IGP Ingredients: The hallmark of a superior Italian restaurant is the provenance of its pantry. Check menus for mentions of "DOP" (Protected Designation of Origin) ingredients such as San Marzano tomatoes, Buffalo Mozzarella from Campania, or Parmigiano Reggiano aged 24 months. If a restaurant is vague about where their flour or olive oil comes from, the quality likely suffers.
Embrace the Regional Menu: Avoid restaurants that try to serve every Italian cliché under one roof. A venue offering carbonara, lasagna, sushi, and burgers simultaneously is likely cutting corners. The best chefs specialize; look for menus that change seasonally and focus on one specific region, whether it be the truffle-rich dishes of Piedmont or the seafood pasta of the Amalfi Coast.
Understand the Pizza Oven: If you are going for pizza, ask or look for evidence of a wood-fired oven. The intense, dry heat of a wood fire creates the leopard-spotted charring (leopardatura) that defines true Neapolitan pizza. Electric or gas ovens cannot replicate the smoky flavor or the texture of a dough cooked at 450°C for 90 seconds.
Consider the Lunch Menu: For a high-end experience without the high-end price tag, visit during lunch hours. Many of Bordeaux’s finer Italian restaurants offer a "Formule Midi" or set lunch menu that includes two or three courses for a fraction of the dinner cost. It is the perfect way to sample premium truffle pasta or fresh fish without breaking the bank.
The Italian dining scene in Bordeaux is a testament to the city’s openness to global influences while maintaining a fierce commitment to quality. Whether you are indulging in a creamy bowl of cacio e pepe in the shadow of the Grosse Cloche or sharing a rustic antipasti platter in the Quartier des Chartrons, these restaurants offer a delicious escape to the Mediterranean without leaving the Gironde.
Take your time to savor not just the food, but the atmosphere. The best meals here are leisurely affairs, designed to be enjoyed with a glass of Italian wine—perhaps a Barolo or a crisp Vermentino—and good conversation. Buon appetito!
