12 Best Italian Restaurants in Aix-en-Provence

Aix-en-Provence is a city that seduces the senses long before you sit down at a table. The golden limestone facades, the shade of centuries-old plane trees, and the hum of the morning markets create an atmosphere that is uniquely Provençal. It is a place where the pace of life slows down just enough to savor a long lunch or a lingering dinner under the stars.

For food lovers, Aix is far more than just a picturesque stop on the Côte d’Azur route. The city’s culinary scene is a vibrant tapestry woven from sun-drenched local produce, fragrant herbs, and a deep respect for Mediterranean traditions. From bustling brasseries on the Cours Mirabeau to hidden gems tucked away on cobblestone side streets, the dining options are remarkably diverse.

Italian cuisine holds a special place in the hearts of the Aixois. Given the city’s proximity to the Italian border and a shared cultural appreciation for olive oil, fresh basil, and ripe tomatoes, it is no surprise that some of the most beloved tables in town serve Italian food. The best kitchens combine French technique with authentic Italian soul, resulting in plates that are both rustic and refined.

However, with so many pizzerias and trattorias vying for attention, finding the truly exceptional spots can be a challenge. A great Italian meal in Aix is not just about avoiding tourist traps; it is about discovering places where the pasta is rolled by hand and the mozzarella is flown in from Campania. It is about finding the perfect balance between a crispy wood-fired crust and a silky, slow-simmered ragù.

We have done the legwork for you, traversing the Quartier Mazarin and the Vieil Aix to sample the best carbonara, the most delicate burrata, and the most inventive antipasti. Whether you are looking for a romantic date night venue, a family-friendly pizzeria, or a chic spot for an aperitivo, this curated list offers something for every palate and budget.

Here is our definitive guide to the establishments that truly honor the spirit of Italian gastronomy in the heart of Provence.

Very good focaccia, I especially liked their homemade pistachio pesto! Nice to be able to customise it fully. Perfect for a fast cheap lunch

Normally love this place but the older woman today was veerrryyyyy cheap with the portions. Almost no cheese nor arugula. The middle was delicious but after that my sandwich was so sad... 😭

Fantastic food, service and atmosphere! Absolutely recommend for a dinner. We ordered the daily special - Agneau with Purée de patates douces and Pommes de terre grenailles confites au romarin. It was tasty and you can feel the chef know what they're doing with all the combinations 😋 The waiter also recommended me a good glass of wine to pair with, which make it even better Seafood linguine is also nice. It might feel less seasoned, but it can't be done without the fresh seafood. Great food, will come back again.
World Traveler★★★★☆
We came to this place because the ambient looks really nice. There's tables outside to enjoy the warm spring weather. I ordered their speciality: "Melozio." I would definately come back again here and order the delicious linguine, which was served in a Parmesan wheel. The espresso was also on point! ☕️

Went here mostly because it had a beautiful patio next to the fountain. Uncontrollable by the restaurant but dinner in the short time we were there was interrupted twice by street performers. It seems to be a stop on their performance itinerary. Got a table without a reservation. The service was friendly and helpful. The food was not good. Had the special rigatoni Genovese and the bolognese. Both tasted like I could cook them at home except both dishes were extremely oversalted.
Tina Frazer★★★★★
My friend thoroughly enjoyed the bolognese here last year and really hyped it up. The bolo really was amazing! Meaty, with perfectly cooked linguini. It's on a cute little Piazza and a violinist was playing the Tango. Lovely!!! Would definitely come back to Maurizio when I'm back in Aix.
Steve Sanders★★★★☆
Outdoor dining at this place for Sunday lunch felt just like eating in Rome, but with cleaner streets, right down to the tiny Amaretto cookie served with your Illy espresso. The linguine frutti di mare was excellent, as was the fruity and quaffable Orvieto. Edit: went back a second time for dinner. The grilled vegetable starter was excellent, but I’m taking off a star for inconsistency. This time the seafood pasta had no mussels. I ordered Orvieto, assuming I’d get the same wine I had Sunday, but got something flavorless. I sent it back and the waiter apologized, but I’m pretty certain whatever he poured me — which was at least better — also was not an Orvieto, as it had a sloped-shoulder bottle.

Nut allergy friendly; I was worried about the pesto sauce but I trusted the servers let the chef know, and they washed down the grill appropriately. Time to food: 13 minutes Arrived at around 9:20PM and was seated at the bar. I went totally with the chef's recommendation. I had a lovely Domaine Combier - Crozes-Hermitage Cuvée Laurent rouge 2024, the Piadina with coppa de parme, parmesan, and red peppers, and a biscoff tiramisu with an espresso to wash it down. Total was 17.5 euro. Honestly, I wish I had found this spot earlier! I ate at several "nice" spots around town during the week. The Piadina here was leagues above the pizza at La Rotunde at half the price. Everyone was polite and friendly. They even do a student discount. It's an amazing quaint little spot.

The five stars must be made up. It’s not a very good place to eat!. Only ate here because we were hungry and it had excellent reviews. A bit of a scam. The few tables in the restaurant were taken so we were seated across the street in a large room that was very noisy and had no ambiance. We were given menus that showed only the piadina or pasta dishes for €8. Since we were hungry, we chose to try out this Italian street food. Ordered penne bolognese and a piadina. It arrived in about 3 minutes - fast but that tells you something. The vegetables in the piadina were still cold. My friend barely touched his bolognese and said it was tasteless. The waiter was very enthusiastic and offered us a dessert that he insisted is part of the meal. I hadn’t seen that in the menu but said ok. He brought me a special tiramisu in a cup and my friend a panna cotta in a cup. The dessert was not at all like tiramisu but it was very good. But when we went to pay, were given a much larger bill - charged 14 euros for the unpleasant food and dessert and water. When i pointed out that the food was €8 on the menu, the woman we had to pay (owner??) pointed to a sign outside the restaurant that says €14 for a dish, drink and dessert. That was definitely NOT on the menu. Such a scam!! It was definitely NOT worth €14. I can get better pizza for €4. AVOID AVOID AVOID.

Super good! Everything is freshly prepared. Had a delicious pasta salad with ham cheese and veg for €8. Perfect light brunch

American family on vacation and we wanted something that was unique but still very familiar on our third day in Aix. Found this place randomly and so glad we had dinner here. All had the piadia meals, which included the sandwich, a drink, and desert for $14 euro. The sandwich is like a grilled wrap- but imagine something super Italian and on steroids. Wraps are boring. This was NOT boring. Loved it. We took their recommendation and ordered one with smoked ham and grilled zucchini. Why is this so good? You can get it to go, dine in and it was also available on Uber eats for delivery. Already missing eating here.

Great fresh homemade pasta, affordable price, tasted like something you could actually get in Italy, and I went here with my Italian friends multiple times so, you can trust me on that !!!

Good food, nice place unfortunately right next to the road with trucks passing now and then. Italian salad with ham and Buratta was the best! Good service and generous portions for the price.

Good small restaurant. We got the pesto with burrata and it was good. The service was friendly. Overall a nice quiet option for lunch in an otherwise very busy town.

We went back twice for dinner in our 3 night stay. This little spot is off the beaten path and offers really warm service and delicious food! With a big menu to choose from and a little deli, the restaurant makes for a very good choice in Aix! In particular our pizza was really excellent and you can definitely taste the quality of the ingredients in the pastas and pizza. The restaurant takes pride in their food and what they offer. The only thing better than the food was the friendliness from all the family involved in this family-fun business - definitely a lot of heart goes into Little Italy.
Moonsado WoW★★★★★
As an American with Latino and Sicilian roots , I’m always on the lookout for real flavor and authenticity and Little Italy By Fratelli ISQUINTA completely blew me away. The food here is outstanding. You can taste the quality in every bite the ingredients are fresh, the spices are perfectly balanced, and every dish feels made with genuine love for Italian cooking. The pizza crust was spot-on: light, crispy, and full of flavor, with toppings that tasted like they came straight from Italy. The sauces were rich and bold without being heavy, and everything had that perfect homemade touch. On top of that, the staff was incredibly friendly and outgoing the kind of energy that makes you feel instantly welcome. You can tell they really care about their guests and take pride in what they do. If you’re in Aix-en-Provence and want a taste of true Italian passion and warmth, Little Italy is an absolute must. I can’t wait to go back it honestly felt like a little piece of home. 🇮🇹❤️🍕

Friendly, warm, cozy space where the owner serves and kisses the guests! And the creme brulèe is better than my nonna’s! The pizza has finesse! The salmon spinach lasagne was heavenly. We are here for a month, we will be back!

I had the pasta with Bolognese and my husband had the pasta with Gorgonzola sauce. Both were delicious! Both were large portions but we still ate every bite. The bread sticks were also really good. Also easy parking.

A small, slightly cramped spot with decent food. It took a while for someone to take our order, but once that happened, the food came quickly and hot, though the pans were not — which actually made for a better customer experience. The gnocchi were great, not doughy as others have suggested, and my companions agreed. The Bolognese was a bit watery and mild in flavor, but still a satisfying meal overall. You pay at the counter, and a maxi portion is available — a good option if you’re very hungry. The regular portion was enough for me, though the price feels steep, especially for the larger size. Recommended if you’re in the area, but not a must-visit.
Sarah Gillett★★★☆☆
Very confused with the high review score of this place. For a place that specializes in gnocchi you’d hope that it would be pretty damn delicious. Whilst the serving size is good, I had the truffle sauce gnocchi and it was extremely bland. The sauce was very thin and lacked flavour. The gnocchi was a little doughy in texture. The woman who worked here was also very unfriendly. Would not recommend as a tourist here, better off spending your stomach space elsewhere!
Ece Muratoğlu★★★★★
Welcoming, sociable and smiling service And cloud-like gnocchi melting in your mouth😋 Also decent pricing Home-made citronade is also very good. And the cafe gourmand is too big to finish alone. Will come back!
Pooja Domble★★★★★
Great gnocchi place. We tried the chicken gnocchi and scampi gnocchi.

My group of friends had gnocchi, 3 different types of gnocchi and lasagna. It was delicious and plentiful. Best of all were the Nonna and her son, proprietors. Don't miss it when you're in Aix: a delightful and delicious experience

Victims of their own success? Had booked a table for 12.45. Arrived at 12.40 and were still waiting to be seated at 13.00 having been told three times we would have our table in two minutes! The place was very busy but obviously short-staffed. We saw several people leave without having been served because they were waiting too long. In the end we gave up and left. Will try another time and see if it's any better.

Avoid at all costs, there is a million places to have a nice pizza in aix so don’t feel obliged to eat at this place. Tourist trap, unorganised and for a new restaurant not clean at all. Mario should stick to pluming.

The food was good. I ordered the raw fish and a pasta+ drink lunch set, price is reasonable. The staff are helpful, there’s an order mistake but they quickly fixed it. Would be great if there are some fan or air conditioning indoor, it was hot during the lunch hour (35 •C) and I was sweating even with iced coffee. Would be more enjoyable if dinning in a cooler restaurant.

My experience at Casa Norma was fantastic! We had dinner on the terrace. Excellent meal including pasta with a very mild and finely chopped anchovies sauce and pasta with rabbit. Wait staff were attentive and able to describe the dishes in detail, along with assistance in the wine selection for different dishes.
Alexandru Drimba★★★★★
Went with a larger group and we made a reservation before hand. Without the reservation you had very slim chances to find a table. We all ate different types of pasta (their main focus IMO), mine was the Amatriciana which was well done. I also had their home-made Tiramisu which was almost the same as an OG italian one. They have some good cocktails available, tried one of the Negroni variant which was very good. But given we're in France the majority of the drinks menu consists of wines, so you have a lot of good options to choose from. The place has a great visual design + the vibe was very friendly, people were talking and having fun. The waiters were also helpful and friendly.

Presentation is almost everything but taste is personal and for me, it was lacking the latter. While a Michelin rated restaurant, a fixed price menu is also not my favorite thing especially when there are 2 prices, There were 6 item at 110 E and 4 for 80 E, the 110 E price included the protein items all 6 courses while the 80 E had 4, no protein. And we are talking bite sized courses, no problem with that .1st course a mini pizza type starter,, then a type of tuna mousse , reminded us of a Hartz Squeeze Up with this crisps, lovely to view but definitely not our favorite, then eggplant rolled around some tomato type chutney with thin eggplant crisps on top, not exciting, sorry but I still cook from scratch, then a prawn came, that was 1 of the 6 , so only 1 came, then a stuffed zucchini flower with a single zucchini stalk, and there is basically a bread/starch with every course that matches the item. Then the last protein which was a fish which while petite and lovely was drenched in a really really spicy sauce so you could not taste the fish, more bread. Dessert was pretty, an almond shape tiramisu, assorted chocolate pieces & a cassata (?) cake, that's the white dessert with pistachios on the top, sort of an interesting take .Service was excellent with an explanation of everything and decor lovely. Took pictures of almost everything to send to our family, it's a family tradition when traveling.

I didn’t expect much since it’s a chain restaurant but for the price, it was so good. There are a lot options on the men, the interior is so pretty. Many sits inside. Italian food, quick and tasty lunch. Great attentive staffs and friendly owner. Clean toilets. Ambience is nice to sit and enjoy food with friends or even with kids. Lasagna was delicious and good portion 18€. It came with salads. My daughter asked to have kid’s menu. Pasta tomato sauce for 15€. We asked but they said it’s a big portion. Anyway in my opinion It’s bit too expensive for it. It’s not worth the price. Will come back and try other food but this time I will make sure to ask for the cost if order outside of the menu.

Essential Tips for Choosing the Perfect Italian Restaurant in Aix

Navigating a city with such a high density of restaurants requires a bit of local knowledge. To ensure your dining experience is memorable for all the right reasons, consider the nuances of dining culture in Aix-en-Provence. The following tips will help you eat like a local and secure the best tables in town.

Book Ahead, Especially on Weekends
The Aixois take their dining seriously, and the best restaurants fill up quickly, particularly on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. If you have your heart set on a specific trattoria, calling a day or two in advance is essential. During the summer festival season, such as the Festival d’Aix, securing a reservation becomes non-negotiable if you wish to avoid a long wait.

Embrace the Aperitivo Hour
Many of the higher-end Italian spots in Aix offer a fantastic early evening experience. Arriving between 6:00 PM and 7:30 PM often allows you to enjoy discounted Spritz cocktails and small bites. This is a wonderful way to sample the atmosphere and quality of a place before committing to a full dinner, mirroring the authentic Italian pre-dinner ritual.

Look for Seasonal Provençal Twists
The best Italian chefs in Aix understand they are cooking in Provence. Do not expect a rigid copy of a Roman menu; instead, look for specials that incorporate local goat cheese, truffles from the Luberon, or artichokes from the market. These fusion touches often result in the most memorable and unique dishes you cannot find anywhere else in the world.

Check the Pizza Oven
If pizza is your priority, glance at the menu or the dining room layout. The phrase forno a legna (wood-fired oven) is what you are looking for. A true wood-fired oven operating at high temperatures is the only way to achieve the leopard-spotted char and airy crust that defines authentic Neapolitan pizza. Electric ovens simply cannot replicate this texture.

Mind the Service Hours
Unlike major metropolitan hubs, Aix-en-Provence generally adheres to strict meal times. Lunch is typically served from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, and dinner service rarely begins before 7:30 PM. If you are hungry at 6:00 PM, you will likely find kitchens closed. Plan your sightseeing schedule around these windows to avoid being stranded without food.

Aix-en-Provence is a city that rewards those who take their time. Whether you are sitting on a terrace watching the world go by with a plate of fresh pasta, or tucked into a cozy corner with a perfectly blistered pizza, the combination of Italian cooking and Provençal ambiance is hard to beat.

The true beauty of this dining scene lies in its variety. From the elegant simplicity of a Margherita made with San Marzano tomatoes to the complex layers of a handmade lasagna, there is an Italian dish waiting to become the highlight of your trip. Venture beyond the main squares, follow the scent of basil and garlic, and you will discover why the marriage of Italy and Provence is such a delicious affair.
