Perched along Spain’s rugged Costa Brava, Tossa de Mar is the kind of place where postcards come to life. With its cobalt-blue coves, pine-clad headlands, and cobbled lanes, this former fishing village has inspired artists and travelers for over a century. It is the only fortified medieval town remaining on the Catalan coast, giving it a distinct character that sets it apart from its busier neighbors. For history lovers, every stone here seems to whisper a story of Roman merchants, medieval fishermen, and bohemian painters.
Unlike the sprawling resorts further down the coast, Tossa de Mar has fiercely protected its heritage. The iconic Vila Vella, or Old Town, rises above the modern marina like a watchful guardian, offering panoramic views of the Mediterranean. Wandering its narrow streets feels like stepping back in time, far from the sun loungers and souvenir shops below. The blend of archaeological remains and well-preserved medieval architecture makes it a unique destination for cultural tourism in Catalonia.
Exploring the historical attractions here is not just about sightseeing; it is about understanding the rhythm of life on the Costa Brava before mass tourism arrived. From Roman villas with intricate mosaics to a lighthouse that has guided sailors for centuries, the town offers a deep, tangible connection to the past. Whether you are a history buff, an architecture enthusiast, or simply a curious traveler, the legacy of Tossa de Mar provides a compelling reason to look up from the beach.
The town’s history stretches back to the Neolithic era, but it truly flourished under Roman rule. The name Tossa derives from "Turissa," reflecting its ancient roots as a vital trading post. Later, during the Middle Ages, the defensive walls and towers were constructed to protect against pirate raids, creating the dramatic silhouette we see today. This layering of civilizations has created a rich tapestry of historical sites that are remarkably accessible on foot.
To truly appreciate Tossa de Mar, you need to venture beyond the beachfront promenade and climb into the old quarter. The effort is rewarded not only with breathtaking views but also with a sense of discovery around every corner. You might find a quiet plaza that once hosted a bustling market or a hidden chapel where sailors prayed for safe passage. These are the moments that make a visit unforgettable.
While many visitors come for the sun and the clear waters, the historical attractions offer a deeper, more meaningful experience. They provide shade in the heat of the day, a break from the crowds, and a chance to engage with the authentic soul of Catalonia. A morning spent exploring these sites will enrich your understanding of the entire region, making your trip far more rewarding than a simple beach holiday.
Below is a curated guide to the most significant historical attractions in Tossa de Mar. Each site has been selected for its cultural importance, state of preservation, and ability to transport you back in time. These are the places that define the character of this beautiful town and offer the best opportunities for exploration and photography.

The Murallas de la Vila Vella are without a doubt the most emblematic landmark in the area. It is an excellent place for iconic, artistic photos, especially during the golden hour when the light hits the medieval stone against the Mediterranean Sea. The historic path is beautifully preserved, and every corner offers a unique perspective. A must-visit if you are looking for the best photography locations on the Costa Brava.

Walking along the old walls of Vila Vella was one of the nicest parts of visiting Tossa de Mar. The stone walls, towers, narrow paths, and sea views make the whole area feel very special, almost like stepping into a small medieval village by the water. It’s a beautiful place to walk slowly, take photos, and enjoy the views of the beach and coastline.
The walk is a great mix of history and scenery in one place. Every corner had a different view, from the old town streets to the blue Mediterranean Sea.
Michael Stretton★★★★★
Beautiful walk up to the bar/restaurant at the top which had great beer and food (including kids food) toilets up there too and exceptional views of Tossa de mar

What an amazing place. Charming little town with old medial castle. There are many shops/restaurants/bars on the way to road to the Castle. Once inside the old castle walls, it almost feels like you have travel back in time. There are also a few shops and restaurants within the walls. The views from walls and from a church at the top of the hill are amazing.

Castell de Tossa is much more than a historic landmark—it's the soul of Tossa de Mar.
I visited early in the morning and found locals jogging along the ancient walls, couples enjoying peaceful walks, and travelers quietly sitting by the sea, taking in the breathtaking Mediterranean view. There was no rush, no noise—just the gentle sound of the waves and the refreshing sea breeze.
Sometimes, the greatest luxury while traveling isn't a five-star hotel. It's simply finding a quiet place to slow down, breathe deeply, and appreciate the beauty around you.
The medieval walls, stone pathways, and endless blue sea create an atmosphere that feels both timeless and peaceful. Every corner offers a different perspective, making it a place worth exploring at your own pace.
If you're visiting Costa Brava, don't just come here for a quick photo. Stay a little longer, wander through the old fortress, and let this beautiful place remind you that the simplest moments often become the most unforgettable memories.
Highly recommended.

A beautiful and peaceful place to visit. Walking along the historic Muralles de Tossa de Mar offers stunning views of the beach, the Mediterranean Sea, and the charming old town. It was lovely to see families and couples enjoying the area, which added to the welcoming atmosphere.
The views from the walls are absolutely worth it, with plenty of great photo opportunities and spots to simply take in the scenery. A perfect place to explore, relax, and appreciate the history and beauty of Tossa de Mar. Highly recommended!

This is beautiful place to walk to in the evenings or afternoons. Find your way into the outpost from within the city. You will have to get lost and discover your way through. But along the way, you will come across the toasty quaintness that is Tossa. Let some of my photographs explain what I mean.

The walls of Tossa de Mar are absolutely magical and one of the most beautiful historical places on the Costa Brava. Walking through the ancient stone paths feels like entering a medieval painting suspended between the sea and the sky. The atmosphere changes with every corner — narrow stairways, old towers, hidden viewpoints, and breathtaking panoramas over the Mediterranean.
What makes this place unforgettable is the combination of history and nature. The medieval walls overlooking the turquoise sea create views that are almost unreal, especially during sunset when the stones turn golden and the water reflects the light below. From the top, you can see the beaches, cliffs, boats, and the white buildings of Tossa spreading along the coast.
The area is beautifully preserved and full of character. Small cafés, art shops, flowers growing between stone walls, and quiet corners make it feel alive rather than just historical. You can truly imagine centuries of sailors, fishermen, travelers, and defenders walking through the same paths.
I especially loved simply slowing down there — not rushing, but taking time to absorb the textures, sounds of the sea, warm air, and the feeling of history surrounding everything. It is romantic, peaceful, and deeply atmospheric.
Without question one of the most memorable places in Catalonia and a must-visit if you are anywhere near Tossa de Mar.

What an incredible historic gem! The Muralles de Tossa de Mar (the walls of the Vila Vella) are absolutely breathtaking.
This is the only remaining fortified medieval town on the entire Catalan coast, and it’s easy to see why it’s a National Monument.
Climbing (or even just wandering) along these ancient stone walls and towers offers some of the most spectacular panoramic views over Platja Gran, the sparkling Mediterranean, and the rugged coastline.
The mix of history, charming narrow cobblestone streets inside the walls, and stunning scenery is perfect. It’s magical at sunset!
Free to explore, well-preserved, and full of atmosphere with little shops, restaurants, and viewpoints. A must-visit if you’re in Tossa de Mar — it truly transports you back in time while delivering postcard-perfect photos at every turn.
Wear comfortable shoes for the uneven paths and bring your camera.

We recently visited the Vil·la romana dels Ametllers in Tossa de Mar and it was pleasantly surprised by how interesting this archaeological site is. Located right in the town, it's easy to reach and offers a fascinating glimpse into Roman life on the Costa Brava from the 1st century BC onward.
The ruins are well-signposted with clear multilingual explanations (Catalan, Spanish, English), so you can easily imagine the layout of the grand villa — rooms, thermal areas, and the overall structure are still quite visible. It's not enormous, but it's very atmospheric and perfect for a quick, educational stop (20-40 minutes is enough).
Richard Marsh★★★★★
FREE ENTRY.......Not very big, 10-15 minutes, and you will have walked around not very accessible for prams or wheelchairs. As climbing stairs are required. But overall, an interesting visit with my two children to the old roman villa ruins.

This is definitely a must-visit site while in Tossa de Mar. I cannot believe it was free to get in, and the place was so well preserved. A few information boards were missing, but that’s understandable given it’s free. Super interesting to find out about the more ancient side of Tossa
Agnieska Banaite★★★★★
A fascinating and unexpectedly atmospheric historical site in the middle of Tossa de Mar. Walking through the remains of the Roman villa feels like briefly stepping into another era. You can still clearly imagine how people once lived here — the layout of the rooms, fragments of mosaics, baths, storage areas, and the structure of everyday Roman life near the Mediterranean coast.
What makes this place special is the contrast between ancient history and the lively modern town surrounding it. Standing among ruins that are nearly two thousand years old while hearing the sounds of present-day Spain around you creates a surreal and beautiful feeling.
The preserved mosaics and archaeological details are impressive, especially considering the open-air setting. There are informative signs that help understand the significance of the villa and its role in Roman Hispania. It’s not an overwhelming museum experience — rather, it feels calm, authentic, and reflective.
I especially loved how the site captures both luxury and fragility: you can sense that this was once an elegant coastal residence filled with light, trade, movement, and human stories, and now only fragments remain under the Catalonian sun.
A wonderful place for anyone interested in history, archaeology, ancient Rome, or simply discovering quieter cultural treasures beyond beaches and tourist streets.
Kim Hewish★★★☆☆
No tickets needed, just walk through the gate. Only takes about half an hour if you really linger and contemplate how the Roman baths would have been laid out. Unfortunately most of the information plaques have been removed. So difficult to know what any of it might have been. Stairs are a must if you want to see most of it.

Inside the medieval fortress walls in the Vila Vella in Tossa de Mar are the remains of Eglésia Vella de Sant Vincenç, a church with origins dating back to the X century. The walls are much more impressive.
Łukasz Hylla★★★★★
The Església Vella de Sant Vicenç, also known as the Old Church of Saint Vincent, is one of the most intriguing historical sites in Tossa de Mar. Located within the ancient walls of the Vila Vella, Tossa’s medieval old town, this church is a testament to the town’s rich history and enduring cultural heritage.
Built in the Gothic style during the 15th century, the Església Vella de Sant Vicenç served as the main parish church of Tossa de Mar for several centuries. Although the church is now in ruins, its remains still evoke a sense of grandeur and solemnity. The stone walls, arches, and fragments of its once-majestic structure stand as silent witnesses to the passage of time, offering a glimpse into the town’s past.
One of the most striking features of the church is its location. Perched on a hill within the fortified walls of the old town, it offers panoramic views of Tossa de Mar, the surrounding coastline, and the sparkling Mediterranean Sea. The combination of the historical architecture with the stunning natural scenery makes this site particularly special.
Despite its ruined state, the Església Vella de Sant Vicenç retains an air of mystery and reverence. Walking through its remains, you can almost feel the echoes of the past, imagining the life of the medieval town and the people who once gathered here for worship. The site is also beautifully illuminated at night, adding a touch of enchantment to the already atmospheric ruins.
Visiting the Església Vella de Sant Vicenç is a must for anyone interested in history, architecture, or simply looking to experience a more reflective side of Tossa de Mar. It’s a place where the past and present converge, offering a unique and deeply moving experience that adds a rich layer to your exploration of this beautiful coastal town.

A peaceful location with incredible views over Tossa and the sea. On a blazing day it catches the breeze. There's a land train to take to the top, but it's not a long walk and you'd miss out on the ruins.

TONY “Tony” RESINA PEREZ★★★★★
A unique building designed by the Modernista architect Antoni Falguera for the wealthy businessman Joan Sans Moré, in 1906. Its style blends Modernista elements, very evident in the interior, with influences from colonial architecture.
The façade facing Passeig del Mar has been significantly modified, although some original elements remain, such as the undulating capstone, pinnacles and gargoyles, and the staggered openings on the ground floor. The more prominent section of the façade, where the large windows are located, is not original. Unfortunately, the original paintings on the façade, featuring garlands, plant motifs, and two female figures, have not been preserved. However, the interior, around the whimsically shaped openings, many of which are now covered with colorful stained glass, has been preserved. The façade facing Plaça Espanya is completely different, reflecting the style of 18th-century houses.
When the house passed into the hands of the Villalonga family in 1930, some renovations were carried out, such as the marble staircase. Later it was converted into a hotel.

Torre d'en Joanàs

Nanita★★★★★
Torre d’en Joanàs is one of three towers lining the perimeter of the medieval fortress walls in Tossa d’en Joanàs. The tower and the walls that are the only ones of its kind still intact date back to the end of the XIV century. Highly recommend walking around the walls to visit this tower and the others. There are stunning views of the sea next to this tower.

Torre d'en Joanas, located in Tossa de Mar, is a historic 16th-century watchtower perched on a hill. Originally part of the town's defensive fortifications, it offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and the Mediterranean Sea. The tower, with its robust stone construction, reflects the region's rich history and strategic importance during the medieval period. Today, Torre d'en Joanas is a charming historical site that attracts visitors with its scenic vistas and cultural significance, providing a glimpse into Tossa de Mar's past.

Torre de l'Homenatge

Kwanghyun La★★★★☆
Cordola Beach resembles a hidden private retreat or swimming pool, and even the entrance looks like a hole leading to a mysterious place. It serves as a photo zone, and naturally, there is a wide path leading to the back. This is not the only way to go; the path to the left is just a wide plaza. I am not sure if it was created by someone or is natural, but since walking straight from the entrance is the shortest route to get here, it seems a path was created out of a great necessity, whether right or wrong.
Gerard Pol★★★★★
Worth a visit, in the evening it is a very romantic place for lovers, paths, atmospheric restaurants.
Carla Lota★★★★★
The tower is one of the most emblematic elements of the walled town of Vila Vella. This imposing tower, situated in a strategic location, forms part of the walls that protected the town in medieval times, becoming a symbol of its history and resilience.
From its base, one can appreciate the robustness of its architecture, while its elevated position offers spectacular views of the beach and the Mediterranean, as well as the picturesque streets of Tossa. The tower evokes an atmosphere of bygone eras, when the fortress was the heart of the town's defenses.
Visiting the Torre de l’Homenatge is like traveling back in time, an experience that combines history, culture, and unforgettable landscapes. It is a must-see for anyone wishing to immerse themselves in the rich heritage of the Costa Brava.

Also known as Torre d'es Codolar, this is the main tower of the walled enclosure of Tossa de Mar, built in the 12th century and later remodeled in the 14th. The tower has a circular floor plan, with a machicolation surrounding its entire upper section, and is located at the southern end of the wall. It is the largest tower in the entire complex and was responsible for defending the entrance to the port. It is called the Keep because it was the site where the governor of the town took his oath of office.

Located next to the entrance gate of the Vila Vella (Old Town). It is Gothic in style, dating from the 14th and 15th centuries, and features the cross's arms in the form of fleurs-de-lis. There are several images, including that of Saint Benedict, as Tossa was dependent on the Benedictine monastery of Ripoll.

The Cap de Tossa is a truly spectacular headland that captures everything beautiful about the Costa Brava in one place. Walking along the cliffs, with the sea crashing below and the old town behind you, feels both dramatic and peaceful at the same time. Small but very informative and interesting visit to the light house museum.
The front of the house greeted us well and gave a very insightful discussion about the lighthouse and local area.
It's small and has few exhibits but don't let that put you off. The information and video are really good.
Some of the lamp systems used as the primary lighting are on display. I found that really fascinating.
Especially for me I liked (technical bit) a three phase incandescent 1300w 125v lamp. At first glance it looks normal. Looking closer seeing multiple contacts... And realising that it was more than a standard lamp.
Simple things, made me smile.
The front of house was super friendly.
Why not pop in and say hello...
Or just enjoy some fantastic views...

Tips for Visiting Tossa de Mar’s Historical Sites
To make the most of your time exploring the rich history of Tossa de Mar, a little preparation goes a long way. The layout of the town, the Mediterranean climate, and the popularity of certain sites can affect your experience. By planning ahead and following local etiquette, you can ensure a smooth, respectful, and deeply enjoyable visit to these cultural treasures.
- Wear Comfortable, Non-Slip Footwear. The Vila Vella is characterized by steep, narrow cobblestone streets that have been polished smooth by centuries of foot traffic. Flip-flops are a recipe for twisted ankles and slips, especially after a summer shower or morning dew. Sturdy sandals or sneakers are essential for safe and comfortable exploration.
- Visit Early in the Morning or Late Afternoon. Tossa de Mar is a popular day-trip destination, and the narrow lanes of the old town can become crowded by midday. Arriving when sites open or waiting until the tour buses leave in the late afternoon will give you cooler temperatures, softer light for photos, and a much more peaceful atmosphere.
- Respect the Residential Nature of the Vila Vella. It is easy to forget that the Old Town is not a museum but a living neighborhood. Many of the stone houses are still private homes. Keep your voice down when walking through residential alleys, avoid peering into windows, and remember that you are a guest in a place where people actually live.
- Carry Water and Sun Protection. The historical sites, particularly the walled enclosure and the lighthouse, offer limited shade. The reflection of the sun off the stone and the sea can intensify the heat. Bring a reusable water bottle and apply sunscreen regularly, as you will likely spend several hours outdoors.
- Combine History with a Swim. The coves surrounding the Vila Vella, such as Es Codolar, sit directly beneath the ancient walls. A fantastic way to experience the landscape is to explore the towers and ramparts first, then cool off in the crystal-clear water below. This allows you to appreciate the defensive geography of the town from a completely different perspective.
Standing atop the ancient walls of Tossa de Mar, watching the sun dip toward the horizon, you understand why this place has captivated people for millennia. The blend of natural beauty and human resilience is palpable in the stonework and the sea air. It is a destination that rewards curiosity, inviting you to wander slowly and look closely at the details that tell the story of the Mediterranean.
Leaving the historical core and returning to the modern town, you carry with you a sense of the deep roots that anchor this vibrant community. Tossa de Mar is more than a pretty beach; it is a place where the past is not just remembered but actively lived. By taking the time to explore its historical attractions, you have connected with the true essence of the Costa Brava.
