Sitting down to a great meal in Saint-Malo is about more than just refueling between sightseeing. In this walled Breton city, food is a bridge between the rugged maritime landscape and the warmth of local hospitality. The challenge for visiting families is rarely finding a place to eat; it is finding a spot where a toddler’s energy and a parent’s desire for authentic French cuisine can coexist peacefully.
The best family-friendly restaurants in Saint-Malo understand that dining with children should feel like a pleasure, not a negotiation. They offer thoughtful children’s menus, swift service that respects short attention spans, and a relaxed atmosphere that forgives the occasional spilled glass of apple juice. Most importantly, they do not compromise on the quality that makes Breton food so memorable.
From the bustling streets behind the ramparts to the breezy terraces overlooking the harbor, the city offers a diverse range of options for every kind of family meal. Whether you need a quick galette before the tide goes out or a leisurely seafood lunch after a morning at the beach, there is a table waiting for you. The key is knowing which kitchens welcome the sound of children’s laughter.
Many of these establishments are rooted in the traditions of Brittany, serving buckwheat crêpes, fresh mussels, and artisanal ice cream. Others bring international flavors to the coast, offering pizza and burgers that have been elevated with local ingredients. In all cases, the focus is on fresh, honest food that appeals to both adventurous young eaters and their more discerning parents.
In this guide, we have selected restaurants that combine quality cuisine with genuine family-friendly credentials. You will find practical details about location, atmosphere, and menu highlights to help you plan your day with confidence. The goal is to help you spend less time worrying about where to eat and more time enjoying the salty air and stunning views.
Below, you will find a curated list of twelve standout establishments that consistently welcome families with open arms. Each one has been chosen for its reliability, its ability to handle dietary preferences, and its understanding of what makes a meal out with children truly relaxing.

Went here twice during a recent trip to St Malo, absolutely incredible food and drink which was very reasonably priced, staff were amazing and helpful. Whole heartedly recommend going for breakfast here!

This is an outstanding little café in a medieval street. The menu is mouthwateringly delicious - original too. It is a gorgeous combination of French and more exotic tastes. We had the Sunday brunch and thought it miraculously good. I dream of a return for second and third helpings. BUT you do need to book. The place is small and deservedly popular

Perfect place for a breakfast, food is great and ingredients are fresh, I tried their "super detoxifyer" (or something like that) and it does help with transit and energy (its a bit rough tastewise tho... but I still recommand).
The atmosphere is very calm, its small and feels kinda like a cafe with great food, very chill.
Would recommand for breakfast, i don't know about other meals but since the food was great I would assume lunch and dinner are good as well.

One of the culinary highlights of our trip to Saint Malo. We ate here twice, returning because the coffee and food were so excellent. Lovely location and nice blankets outside! Thanks for two wonderful experiences 😊

Superb breakfast find. 3 young ladies constantly busy , friendly and the food was great. Perfectly cooked eggs, fresh French bread and salad. Reasonable prices too.

Not hidden but a gem. Food and service with love and care. Friendliness 11/10

Wonderful cafe, amazing service, happy to explain the menu and exceedingly friendly. Excellent food - had the sandwich, soup combo my partner had the duck salad both delicious.

Most delicious and wholesome meal. Very friendly staff. Small menu, but everything we had was delicious, so we'll worth a visit.

For people who love good food made by people who care. A small menu of absolutely delicious recipes made with love. No more expensive than anywhere else! If you're tired of Gallette, Crepe and Moules Frites at every turn, try this place, it's the real deal.
Jeremy Bailey★★★★★
Cafe Cargo Clute absolutely lives up to its Google rating. The owner was incredibly friendly and spent a good five minutes walking us through the lunch menu, sharing his personal favourites and suggesting thoughtful pairings. His passion for the café was obvious, and you can tell a lot of care has gone into curating the menu.
We had the lunch special and tried all three croques—each one was excellent. The salad was fresh and crisp, and the gazpacho was spot on for a warm, sunny day. Of course, we had to try the oysters too, which were fresh and juicy—an absolute treat. A great find in St. Malo—highly recommended!

Great meal and service. We were a group of 16 Americans (we’re a bit loud) which the French don’t like, and it’s a small place, but thankfully we had no complaints! We all enjoyed our food - several of us are vegetarian and they were able to accommodate our requests efficiently. Food was superb & dessert was beautifully presented.

Best meal I've had in France. Such amazing value, very attentive and helpful service. Would definitely revisit when we're next in St Malo!

After a walk along the beautiful local beach we popped into Kidygwen with the hope of a late dinner. From the start the welcome was warm, every effort was made despite our poor French. Food was generous and very fresh, particularly the oysters and prawns. Washed down with local wine, cider and sorbets. Each one delicious! Luca, our waitor, was so very hospitable, he really made our final night in Saint Malo one to remember. Merci Luca! We will be back!

We discovered this restaurant by chance and made it our guesthouse during our stay in Saint-Malo. The owner's welcome is sensational, and the delicious and varied dishes are truly worth a visit. Living in the United States, we rarely visit France, but if the opportunity arises, we will return with undisguised pleasure. Note that the prices are very reasonable.

Fantastic food, great service, and the slightly mad lady who runs the place is very friendly and a fantastic host. The Salmon is absolutely to die for, they smoke it themselves.
The menu is brilliant, 3 courses with a wide variety of things to choose from.
Highly recommended, we went back twice while visiting.

Great ambiance, warm and attentive service, and an unforgettable meal. I ordered the Terre et Mer (surf and turf) crêpe, and it was outstanding. The scallops were perfectly cooked, the smoked duck was rich and savory, and the buttery buckwheat crêpe was wonderfully crisp. Everything paired beautifully with a glass of local cider. A perfect taste of Brittany!
Borja Marazuela★★★★★
Best crépe I've ever had! The savoury crepes were very good but the sweet one with home made chocolate and Chantilly....out of this world! Also very cheap for the quality and the amazing service!
Anne Ngunu★★★★★
From the moment we arrived, the team offered exceptional service — the kind that makes you feel genuinely seen and cared for. They immediately helped us find a temporary parking solution since we had our baby with us, and that thoughtful gesture set the tone for the entire visit.
Inside, the staff brought a personal touch to everything: recommending dishes with sincerity, checking in with warmth, and creating a space that felt both comfortably relaxed and subtly luxurious. It’s rare to find a place that balances those two feelings so effortlessly.
The galettes were superb — beautifully prepared, generous, and full of flavor. Dessert was just as impressive, indulgent without being heavy, and all at a price that felt refreshingly affordable for the quality offered.
They truly lived up to their Google reviews, and in many ways exceeded them. A place that understands hospitality, craft, and heart. Highly recommended.
Daniel Banh★★★★★
Quite a busy spot so better to book in advance. Lots of options for galette and crepes, including vegetarian options. A nice spot for tea as well in the afternoon
Dennis Corsten★★★★★
Excellent place, very friendly and helpful staff, very friendly with our kids. The restaurant looks very nice. The meals are a treat for the eyes and taste wonderful. Very balanced flavours, it is listed and famous as a crêpe restaurant but their omelettes and salades are also very good. They also have a great selection of tea and have some nice wines if that's more for you.
All in all, I would definitely recommend this place when visiting the port of Saint-Malo.

We had dinner at this restaurant for one night, and I must say I was very happy with the experience. The staff were very friendly, and the atmosphere was perfect.
We tried a salad, fillet steak, and rumsteak. The salad and rumsteak were both excellent. The salad was a mix of grilled vegetables (eggplant, bell pepper, etc.) with octopus and was absolutely delicious. The rumsteak with garlic butter sauce was cooked medium as requested, very tender, and melted in the mouth.
The only reason I did not give a 5-star review is the fillet steak. It was tasty but a bit tough and not among the best steaks I have tried, especially compared to the rumsteak.
Overall, I was very satisfied with the dinner.
Steven Padmore★★★★★
Exceptional in every respect. Our waiter could not have been more accommodating, the food was the best we’ve had all week and the Rhum Baba will make you sleep well. Highly recommended.
Chris Astley-Stone★★★★★
This is hands down the best restaurant in town. What is most impressive is that, despite its central location, it doesn't feel like a "tourist trap" at all, it’s an authentic, high-quality dining experience.
We had one of the best meals of our lives here. We started with the oysters, which were incredibly fresh, followed by the salt cod gratin and the fillet of beef. The beef was finished in butter right at the table, and the flavour was absolutely superb.
The service was both attentive and efficient without ever making us feel hurried. We spent nearly two hours savoring the food and the atmosphere. If you are in St. Malo, this is a must-visit for a special meal.

It has been very challenging for me to find a lactose free fulfilling meal in France and this restaurant did a great job. I was able to enjoy a wonderful salad, delicious bread, and very good sea bream filet with potatoes and veggies. I’m very thankful when a restaurant understands and accommodates lactose free in their menu and delivers a high quality meal.
Matilde Ramos★★★★★
Would say this is an affordable place to eat with really good and fresh cuisine. I had the pan fried scallops for starters and they were genuinely amazing. Then had moules, which were as good! Extremely good portions, which makes it more affordable.
It was a little bit noisy but overall very good experience.

The place was nice with decor and cozy style .. but the beef really tough and raw a bit... i could not even cut by knife .... difficult to eat ! I heard a couple just had dinner here , they said food was good .. but my experience not really as they said .... the dessert i had crème brûlée.. it was nice ... anyway it was not good experience

The friendly Garcon out front informed my family of the wonderful selection of choices. There was something for all ages. The food came out very quickly. Such a cute little hole in the wall. Great sunset view. Over priced for sure, but you’re paying the view. Food is alright. We waited 30 mins for a seat on a Friday and then another 20 for a drink after we ordered it. Staff seem unpleasant.
Room for improvement

The cakes were huge! I was there with my wife and our 4-year-old daughter, and the staff clearly saw that.
I ordered three cakes and two coffees, but nobody mentioned that one cake was already more than enough for the three of us, or that the portions were simply not suitable for a young child.
Instead, the order was taken without any advice, and we were served three very large cakes. We obviously took the leftovers with us, but I believe good service also means helping customers order an appropriate amount, especially when you can clearly see that there is a small child at the table.
A simple comment from the staff such as “One cake should be enough for the three of you” would have been much more helpful.
The photo speaks for itself — the portions are enormous.
Lucky Lucky★★★★★
Amazing place with very delicious food and remarkable service. It’s fresh, has a good taste. Anyway be aware of a dessert size, cakes are enormously big, after some starter and Main course it’s almost impossible to eat it all. Highly recommend!
Andrew Malloy★★★★☆
We had a really delicious meal, great burger, great grilled pork with chorizo sauce, great bolognese. Only sadly tainted by an ice cream desert my son had which had coffee sauce in it, not mentioned in the description, either in French or English. Apart from that all the food was lovely, the ice creams were huge, so make sure you have space before ordering.
Rebecca Wooding★★★★★
This place has the best chocolate cake, also does really nice burgers. Friendly service and reasonably priced.
till siebert★☆☆☆☆
We were placed in the last accessible seats after I asked if we could sit down there. It was no problem and the service was quick and friendly. I ordered a salad. My friend ordered ice cream. I ate maybe two leafs of salad as I noticed a bad taste in the dressing. Very sour but also kind of rotten. I immediately lost my appetite. I told the waitress, I couldn't eat it anymore. She was confused and asked what's wrong. I explained. She took it back but looked angry. After a while she offered me the same salad with no vinegar. I thankfully declined. She looked at me like I was crazy and angrily said "you pay for that plate!" I was unsettled by her attitude. I said "ok, whatever". When I asked if I could pay, she told me to go inside, still angry at me, totally unprofessional. I went inside and explained myself again. In a good restaurant that sometimes happens, I said. Sometimes people don't like your food. It doesn't mean everything tastes bad there. And in a good restaurant you just accept that. They answered, I could have ordered something else. I repeated, that I lost my appetite after the taste of the dressing. They didn't understand so I payed and left.

Le Berbere is a love, small and very popular restaurant. The staff are friendly and helpful and the decor is warm and inviting. We ordered our drinks which came with a small bowl of spiced potatoes and olives. We then started by sharing the ‘chicken brick’ which is like a crispy pancake stuffed with a mixture of chicken. Then we had lemon chicken tagine and a lamb tagine with a side of couscous. The food was delicious but be warned the chicken and the lamb come with bones in.
We would definitely recommend eating here but don’t forget to book.

If you want to have a delicious meal, this is the place to go. The lamb was excellent, and the couscous with vegetable sauce was amazing. We absolutely loved everything. The service was fast and polite. I highly recommend this restaurant.

There is a reason why its 'Top Rated' Somewhat hidden on a quiet street inside the Intra-Muros but this place is a real gem in St. Malo. A friendly service and really delicious Algerian food. The tagines and merquez sausages are superb. Thank you for making our St Valentine dinner extra special.

A lot of positive reviews prompted our visit.
Unfortunately, we found this place didn't live up to them for us.
We had an initial very warm welcome, and then we were moved tables to accommodate a party of 6.
The brick starter was excellent.
Both the lamb tagine and couscous were very mildly flavored and I used an entire dish of harissa to try to liven it up.
The meatballs were very bland, and when I advised this I was contradicted and told I was the only person ever to complain. OK, well, possibly? These were replaced with two more merguez, not fully cooked, so had to be put in the mild consomme to cook a bit longer.
For a tourist place I guess it was OK, but we really were not impressed.
Cold wind every time the door opened, for all the people getting takeout.
Mana Neyestani★★★★☆
Is it ridiculous to go all the way to Saint-Malo — the capital of galettes, crêpes, and seafood — and dedicate a meal to couscous instead? Well, I’m exactly that ridiculous! After two days of galettes and oysters, I decided to give in to my deep love for couscous and tagine. I went to Le Berbère and was welcomed by friendly, polite staff and an excellent chicken tagine. After all, a little variety among all the Breton dishes doesn’t hurt!

Had a wonderful dinner here on 26 Juin. I highly recommend Pesk ha farz and Kig ha farz (plats traditionelles Breton). Both were cooked just perfectly and the sauces were beautifully balanced. They didn't overwhelm the flavors of each dish. I'm not an expert on Breton cooking, but this was a top notch example. We were greeted by a very knowledgeable man who really knows his products. Helped us pair a wine with each dish, and brought out a delicious cider to sample before dinner (which in hindsight, went nicely with the pate en croute). He even helped position the table so that we both had a view of the water as the evening went on. It was an excellent meal, with a light-hearted fun atmosphere. If you're in St. Malo, don't miss a chance to try this place.
Vernon Rabbetts★★★★★
Really nice restaurant, the Pesk ha Farz and Kig ha Farz with buckwheat what crumble are real stand-out dishes but the burger looked amazing too, and the foie gras starter and tarte tartin dessert disappeared very quickly.
Service is friendly and the decor warm, and inviting.

Delicious food, great service and a cozy refined atmosphere. A great menu and wine selection, with each dish having its own unique taste. The waiters were all very attentive and friendly. Would highly recommend, with a reservation.

Went there on a weeknight. Despite asking for the deee table outside they said it wasn’t available and told us we could have a place inside. There are a lot of tables and there was one server and the owner. The service was hectic and slow. Once you had your food you didn’t see the server again until the next course. The food was good. The presentation lovely. The outside table wasn’t filled.
Russ W★★★★★
Dined with my wife (Tues 7:10pm). Warmly greeted and seated inside by a window. The restaurant has indoor (ground and mezzanine) and outdoor seating. I had the Kig Ha Farz for a main. Perfectly presented, cooked and taste. The two proprietors were lovely. Attentive and engaging. Plenty of atmosphere without overbearing music or loud chatter. Just a fantastic environment for a relaxed, delicious dining experience. Highly recommended.

Came here for some lunch, met by really friendly staff at the door and we were seated straight away. Super friendly staff in general, the vibe in the place was nice. Food did not take long to come when ordered and it tasted very nice! Portion size was very good and the galets were filled with loads of the stuffing. Overall a very good place to grab some lunch! 🍽️ (loved the way menus were presented like newspapers)

Very nice restaurants with beautiful decors and friendly staffs. Very crowded on both floors. The mussels are ok, not too big and a bit salty. The sweet crepe is the must try one. Only with sugar on top but it’s very flavourful.

This place changed for the last 4 years, it looks more and more like a tourist trap. Not sure what is happening with their food, but it is downgrading every year. It would also be good to hire some English speakers for service - it would definitely help having a conversation when something is needed. Good luck, it is a nice place otherwise.
Bob Morris★★★★★
It was a very pleasant experience. The waitress was very nice and took care of us. She even showed us how best to eat mussels. The mussels were very tender and full of favor. It seems to smaller mussels are more tender than the larger sizes ones. We enjoyed that as our meal today. We used the fries to soak up the cream sauce plus an order of bread and butter. What a great way to enjoy the courtyard in the walled city. You should take this place out!
Hugo Skoppek★★★★★
Great place to poeple watch and meet up with friends. The galettes are excellent and waiters are very friendly and helpful - the senior staff have impressive people skills to handle tired toddlers and difficult guests. I highly recommend this place.
Practical Tips for Dining Out with Kids in Saint-Malo
A little advance planning can transform a simple meal into one of the best memories of your trip. Saint-Malo is a highly walkable city, but the narrow streets and high demand for outdoor tables mean that a few insider strategies can make all the difference. These tips are designed to help you navigate local dining customs, manage timing, and keep everyone happy from the first bite of bread to the last scoop of ice cream.
1. Embrace the Early Seating
French dinner service typically starts later than many children’s bedtimes. To avoid a long wait and a hungry meltdown, plan to arrive for lunch between 12:00 PM and 12:30 PM, or for dinner right when the kitchen opens, usually around 7:00 PM. You will get faster service, a quieter dining room, and the best chance at a table with a view.
2. Look for the “Menu Enfant”
Most of the restaurants on this list offer a dedicated children’s menu, often priced between 9 and 14 euros. These menus usually include a main course, a drink, and a dessert, and they often feature simple, familiar dishes like grilled chicken, fish with rice, or a classic jambon-fromage crêpe. Do not hesitate to ask if the kitchen can adjust a dish for a picky eater.
3. Ask for a “Carafe d’Eau”
In France, tap water is free and perfectly safe to drink. Instead of paying for multiple bottles of sparkling water, simply ask your server for a carafe of water for the table. This small request is completely acceptable in French dining culture and will keep your family hydrated without inflating the bill.
4. Pack a Small “Restaurant Kit”
While the best family restaurants provide high chairs and sometimes crayons, not all of them do. Bring a small bag with a few quiet activities, such as a coloring book, a small toy, or a deck of cards. A packet of wet wipes is also invaluable for cleaning sticky hands after a buttery galette or a cone of caramel ice cream.
5. Share the Seafood Adventure
Breton cuisine is famous for its seafood, but not every child is ready for a full plate of mussels. Order a seafood platter or a bowl of moules-frites for the adults, and let the children try a single mussel or a piece of crab. Sharing a few bites from your plate is a low-pressure way to introduce young palates to the flavors of the sea.
6. Save Room for a Crêpe Walk
In Saint-Malo, dessert is often best enjoyed on the move. Instead of ordering dessert at the restaurant, consider walking to a dedicated crêperie or ice cream stand for a final treat. This gives the kids a chance to stretch their legs, explore a new street, and end the meal with a sense of adventure.
A family meal in Saint-Malo is a chance to slow down and savor the simple pleasures of good food and good company. The city’s restaurants, with their warm wood interiors and views of the ever-changing sea, create the perfect backdrop for conversations that linger long after the plates are cleared. When you find a place that welcomes your children with a smile and serves a galette you will dream about for months, you have found a true treasure.
As you plan your days around the ramparts, the beaches, and the tides, let these restaurants become part of your itinerary. The right meal at the right table can turn a rainy afternoon into a cozy memory or a sunny lunch into the highlight of your vacation. Bon appétit and happy travels along the Emerald Coast.
