Dijon is a city that rewards travelers who look beyond the surface. While the capital of Burgundy is world-famous for its mustard, its medieval architecture, and its role as a historical powerhouse, it also serves as a fantastic base for exploring the wider Côte d’Or region. However, a trip to this charming French city doesn’t have to drain your wallet, especially when it comes to finding a place to sleep.
Many visitors assume that staying in the heart of a historic European city requires booking an expensive boutique hotel. Fortunately, Dijon offers a surprisingly diverse range of budget-friendly accommodations that don’t sacrifice comfort or location. From modern chains on the outskirts to family-run guesthouses in the city center, there is a bed for every type of traveler.
When searching for an affordable stay, the key is to balance the nightly rate with the cost of transportation. Sometimes, a hotel slightly outside the city center offers free parking and lower rates, making it ideal for road-trippers. Other times, a compact room in the historic district saves you money on transit and allows you to walk to the Palais des Ducs in minutes.
The French hospitality industry is well-regulated, meaning even the cheapest hotels usually maintain high standards of cleanliness and service. You can expect comfortable bedding, reliable Wi-Fi, and helpful staff whether you are paying €50 or €150 a night. The real difference usually comes down to square footage and extra amenities like on-site restaurants or gyms.
Because Dijon is a university town and a hub for business travelers, prices fluctuate based on the academic calendar and local events. Booking in advance is the best way to secure the lowest possible rate, particularly if you are visiting during the popular summer months or the famous International and Gastronomic Fair in the fall.
To help you plan your trip without the stress of overspending, we have curated a list of the most reliable and valuable affordable hotels in the area. These selections focus on guest reviews, location practicality, and overall value for money.

Now here's a review that you need to read before ever getting put off my the negative reviews... Let me tell you why.
Ok I am someone who grew up in poverty and as such I get really twitchy if I read reviews that say things like "the rooms are dirty and smelly" because honestly, even in an emergency, I'd rather sleep in the car than in a place like that.
So when my good lady wife booked this cheap n cheerful quick stay for me n my boys on our way from middle Netherlands to the French Alps, i was very dubious indeed.
I fully expected to be met with a 50/50 chance of a dirty smoky room, or a sort of shabby but bearable short stay.... Neither filled me with optimism and I was unfairly grumpy as we approached the motel - tired and in need of a sleep.
Oh but how wrong I was.... The receptionist was fantastic, the rooms spotless... IMMACULATE! with charging ports everywhere, great showers, loads of toilets etc and a decent breakfast for next to nothing.
I was so impressed I asked my wife to rebook on our way back home, and instead of booking one room, she booked two!
Now of course it is possible to get a room, that maybe has been smoked in (against the rules) and maybe even still a bit smelly after a clean.... BUT I'd bet my right arm it would be a very very rare situation and one that could happen in any hotel.
Honestly - the rooms, the bedding, the toilets (even the ones that clean themselves by hosing themselves with water that makes you think someone has pissed on the seat lol) are all immaculate.
I could not be more happy with the place.
Marvin Rijnders★★★★☆
Hotel room was good. Small but had airco and a good small bathroom.
Everything was clean. 4 stars due to the poor breakfest.
This hotel is intended as cheap, nice pass through for us to get to Spain 2 day trip.

I was surprised how quiet the rooms are. Double rooms with sink HC water. Window for fresh air.
Very basic breakfast offering. Lots of parking.
Michael★☆☆☆☆
The place is a rip off. There was a disgusting smell in the room. I didn’t find it safe to sleep there, not knowing what chemical caused the smell. The guy at the reception said I would get a refund. Turns out that is not the case.

Stayed here on the way to skiing. At €31 euros you honestly don’t get better for three of us. I am tight so opted naturally for the cheapest option. There was what I can only describe as human scat on the floor, one of my travel buddy’s spent the whole night itching. Lastly the room was like falling asleep in an ash tray it smelt so bad. All in all for €11 each an incredible 6 hour stay. Let’s just say I wasn’t tight on the route home.

Just a quick over night stop from the alps, back to the uk. As always, this B&B hotel provided us with a great nights sleep. We like the locked parking, super comfortable mattress and pillows, aircon was appreciated, along with lovely hot shower.
This hotel a little more tired than other B&B hotels we have stayed in the past, however it would not deter us from staying again
Gijs★★★☆☆
The location is great for a night on the road in France but I would not stay again. The beds were very hard, the room was too warm (it was not warm outside), the (ineffective) ventilation was noisy and the airconditioning was not working; just blowing warm air, even when put on ‘cold’. The room was clean and the shower great, to end on a positive note. But I’m afraid I can’t recommend it.
Lynsey Gray★★★☆☆
I’ve stayed at many different B&B hotels in France, so I was surprised by this one as I’ve only had good experiences in others.
Firstly parking - near impossible. The car park was full of Europcar vans and trucks, some blocking up to 3 spaces, so we only just managed to get parked.
The machine to gain access doesn’t have contactless which is a bit of a pain, not a big deal, but should have been a clue as to how dated the inside would be.
There’s no lift (not that we could find) so be warned if you can’t manage with stairs or have heavy cases to carry.
The hallways and rooms smell old and stuffy, and the bathroom is very dated, though I will say very clean.
That said we did sleep very well. It was quiet, and the air con was working well.
Mick Dickinson★★★☆☆
I am a big fan of the overall B&B Hotels offer based mainly on price and convenience but disappointed on this stop over at Dijon Nord where the room and bathroom were tired, dated and a bit sad.

Be aware of the arrival after 10pm. We arrived tired and had to be dealing with a machine to obtain a check in... And of course it did not work. After having driven 700km it was not what I expected. The gentleman on the help line was very helpful but it took over 20 minutes to get the check in done ... 20 minutes too much after having been driving for hours and with exhaustion.

Okay I want to be precise, it has been so long and I am late to make this review I took a room in this hotel in 2018, but I can still remember every moment spent there, thanks to their excellent receptionists, as well as the great service, not to mention cleanliness of the rooms and good prices. You can hear everything your neighbors say and do above/below. the shower has no sides so the bathroom overflows. the wifi is good though. I didn't sleep a wink the bed was so bad.

Positive - friendly staff and low price.
Negative - room incorrectly described. Not carpered. No telephone. No toiletries. Could not pay by card as their machine was broken! Really..... No card admin cost with cash... and no receipt offered or given.
Summary - cheap price cheap room. You get what you pay for. Staff were particularly friendly considering we are English and can't speak much French.

Very basic hotel, you get what you pay for. But I wouldn't recommend it, there are better hotels nearby.
Booked hotel in the morning, arrived in the afternoon and the lad in the reception says to me they can't take card payments, I was lucky and I had a 50€ note on my pocket. Next morning, I have to walk miles to town( not buses on weekends) to find a cashpoint.
But That's not all!!!! I was resting in bed, at 6pm cleaner opened the door without knocking it or anything....
Getting worst.... The guy come at 22.00 to ask for the money! When I was going to pay following morning.
I was going to stay one more night, but I refused it and book it in somewhere else.

Great location and polite staff, but unacceptable hygiene issue
On the positive side, the hotel has an excellent location and the rooms are quite nice, equipped with working air conditioning. The staff was also very polite when handling my issue.
However, the lack of cleanliness was shocking. I checked into the hotel on Sunday around 5:00 PM, well after the standard check-in time, so the cleaning staff had more than enough time to prepare the room. Right after entering, I opened the toilet lid and was absolutely horrified. There were old, dissolved feces in dark water. It was clear the toilet hadn't been cleaned or even flushed before my arrival.
After a staff member came up to verify the situation, they moved me to another room. However, management offered absolutely no compensation for this disgusting experience—no partial refund, no room upgrade, and not even a free breakfast. Polite staff and a good location cannot make up for such a massive cleaning failure.
And yes, you hear the doors of neighboring rooms slamming, This interferes with your rest.
Claire Furnon★★★★★
Easy to access parking, elevator going directly to rooms and reception. Employees very friendly and helpful.
The room was bigger than I thought it would be and the bathroom was simple but nice. The included breakfast was really nice and filled with diverse food in the buffet (even some lactose free milk which is much appreciated when you are intolerant like me).
The hotel is quite well located with the tramway stop just next to the entrance (less than two minutes walking slowly).
Only improvement that would make it even better would be having a restaurant in the hotel. After a long drive, the last thing you wish is to get out again to find something to eat before a well deserved sleep. We personally ordered food online but I good restaurant meal is always better.
Rachael Thompson★★★★★
Good value for money hotel in Dijon. Shares communal areas with the Ibis so there's reasonably priced car parking, a bar and a good breakfast. About 10 to 15 min walk into town centre. We had a family room for 3. The extra bed was sort of inside a cupboard, it was ok but lacked a light and power socket
Dmitry Krotov★★☆☆☆
There is a complete lack of soundproofing. Whenever someone closes a door, the walls literally shake. Conversations, movements, and even the creaking bed from neighboring rooms are clearly audible, creating an experience more akin to a budget hostel than a hotel charging 150 euros per night. The ventilation is inadequate, leaving the room stuffy and uncomfortable. Opening the window brings in constant street noise, making it impossible to rest or relax. This level of discomfort is unacceptable given the price point.
Mark Freeman★★★★★
A really good budget hotel. I was stopping over between London and the alps driving and I would recommend this hotel. There is no traffic noise so you get a good night's sleep. Comfortable clean rooms with a good buffet style breakfast for an extra 8.5 euros. Secure car parking is an extra 7.5 euros. There is a casino supermarket within a short walk, plus a couple of cafes.

One of the worst hotel i have ever been to, A front door wich is difficult to close. dirty room and sleeping with your feet almost against the wall, a tv as small as a computer screen and the constant passing of cars on the highway. The shower was even worse less space than in a submarine because the (constantly running)toilet and sink are in the same little cabin. Only upside is the receptionist who tries to preserve a quiet space around the hotel at night. Definitely hope to not have to sleep here again.

The room is very small and the door doesn’t have a working lock from the inside. The room is very clean and didn’t smell so aside from the two issues I have mentioned I have no problems with the room.
The service was great the guy at the counter spoke perfect English which is fantastic as I don’t know a lot of French he was super friendly and helped me sort WiFi and everything out.
My biggest issue with the stay and reason I’m giving it such a low review is the fact the other guests are super loud with speaking laughing watching videos and slamming doors. It’s very annoying to not be able to sleep because of the rudeness of others.
I am doing this as a one night thing but I would suggest staying somewhere else unless you are able to sleep the anything
Tania★★☆☆☆
We booked here as a quick stopover, but the experience was disappointing. The first room smelled strongly of cigarette smoke and had burn holes in the bed cover. The staff member on duty was very helpful and moved us to a smoke-free room, but the hotel overall feels poorly maintained. We were asked to dictate our full card number and expiry date at reception, which didn’t feel secure. We were repeatedly reminded to return the key or be charged, and even warned that taking pillows would incur a fee (which we had no interest in anyway). No soap was provided for handwashing — only a large bottle of shower gel in the shower, which itself did not look properly cleaned. Would not stay again.
P.S.: I appreciate the answer from the hotel owner, but this is the hotel where we stayed and we have payments proof to confirm that.
Marisa Taylor★★★☆☆
Exactly what it's advertised as - a convenient stopping place while travelling. Rooms are basic but can sleep up to 3 people. We had 2 rooms for a family of 5, one had clearly been used by smokers previously as there was a strong smell lingering. The bathrooms are small capsule style but adequate, shower was both hot and powerful enough. Staff are pleasant and helpful both on check in (automatic check in machine only lets you check in one room per booking) and at breakfast. Breakfast is good value continental style with freshly baked pastries, cereals, yogurts, bread etc.

The room had a strong stale smell and the hotel feels very old and worn. The carpet looked dirty and the overall atmosphere was not pleasant. Okay for one short night during a long road trip, but I would not stay longer.
Elio Prifti★☆☆☆☆
The card machine that was supposed to provide the room key was not working, and even when I finally received a card, it would not open the door.
The shower was extremely small — I could barely move inside. It was uncomfortable and clearly not designed with basic guest comfort in mind.
There was also a terrible smell in the room. I had to keep the window open the entire time just to be able to breathe properly.
*** The WORST part: in the middle of the night, around 2 AM, a man (either an employee or the owner) unlocked and opened my room door while I was sleeping. This is completely unacceptable and a serious violation of privacy and safety. I felt shocked and unsafe. There is absolutely no justification for entering a guest’s room at that hour without permission.
Overall, this was an extremely disturbing and unacceptable experience.
Ben De Candole★★★★★

This was a terrible hotel. I have never felt so unsafe staying somewhere with my children.
Upon arrival at midnight, our family of six (four children) was greeted by a staff member who either did not speak English or pretended not to. We were given the keys to our two three-person rooms because the key card system on all doors had been removed and was out of service.
Room 1 had clearly been used and had not been cleaned, while we couldn’t even open the door to Room 2. After reporting this, we were given a key card for Room 2—which could open every room in the hotel!—along with two new two-person rooms on the second floor. The staff member randomly handed out keys from an unmarked box. In other words, these keys could potentially open any room. We were simply told to try them and see what worked.
Since we refused to stay in a room with a broken lock that could only be opened with a master key, we ended up—at 1:00 AM—cramming into a two-person room with two of our children (three people total). The doors to these rooms could not be locked, meaning anyone could walk in at any time.
The rooms reeked of smoke and alcohol, were filthy, and were extremely outdated. The floors hadn’t been cleaned, there were no curtains, and the bathroom smelled awful. We let the children sleep for a few hours, but out of fear that someone could walk in at any moment, we didn’t sleep at all. By 5:00 AM, we left as quickly as possible.
We understand this is a budget hotel, but for €60 per room, we at least expected basic hygiene and security. We will never return.

Unfortunately, this hotel is an absolute disgrace. Sure, it's a cheap hotel, but the rooms should still be large enough to allow for some sort of movement. Four square meters is simply not enough for two people. Every kennel is bigger. The breakfast left a lot to be desired. Even washing at the sink was almost impossible because there's simply no space. I wouldn't recommend it.

It did what we needed, 1 night stop over. Beds were comfortable and room clean. People smoking in the rooms below us blew into our room, room smelt a little like it had been smoked in but could be as we are sensitive being non smokers. What we weren't expecting was the 100s of supped up race cars and bikes. Plus the hundreds of people hanging around from about 9pm!!! Once dark they then started revving and racing the cars around. Plus hooting. This carried on till after 3am. Then at this point, someone was either leaving early or collecting someone and proceeded to hoot every few seconds for about 20 minutes until they got in the car and slammed the door. Won't be booking with this make hotel again, lesson learned. Incredibly expensive for what you get.

All in all, a positive experience. Cleaning should have more attention to details like making the sure the corners of the room are 100% clean. There were also spiderwebs. Just a little more attention to small details would give a more professional touch to the experience. On the other hand, the room had many appliances which was really good to cook a meal and watch TV in the evening. The bathroom was also good and the bed was comfortable. The location is good since it's not far from the city center. Great cost / benefit.

Tips for Booking a Cheap Hotel in Dijon
Finding the right hotel is about more than just looking at the nightly sticker price. To ensure you get the best value for your money and avoid hidden costs, it is important to understand how the local market operates and what trade-offs you might be making.
1. Consider the Tram Line
Dijon has an excellent and affordable tram system. If you can’t find a cheap hotel directly next to the Notre-Dame or the Ducal Palace, look for accommodations near the T1 or T2 tram lines. Staying a few stops outside the hyper-center can slash your room rate in half while keeping you only a 10-minute ride from the main attractions.
2. Beware of Parking Fees
If you are driving to Dijon, always check the parking situation before booking a hotel in the city center. Many historic streets are pedestrianized or have restricted access, and on-site parking at central hotels can cost upwards of €15 to €20 per day. Often, a budget hotel on the outskirts with free private parking is significantly cheaper overall than a "cheap" central hotel.
3. Look for "Logis" or Independent Hotels
While international chain hotels offer consistency, independent hotels and those bearing the "Logis" label often provide better value in French cities. These are usually family-run establishments that include a more authentic French breakfast and offer personalized local advice, often at a price point that beats the big chains.
4. Visit Outside Peak Season
Dijon is busiest during the summer months and during the autumn wine harvest. If your schedule is flexible, consider visiting in late spring or early winter. Not only will hotel prices drop significantly, but you will also enjoy the museums, restaurants, and markets without the tourist crowds.
5. Watch for Breakfast Add-ons
In France, breakfast is frequently not included in the standard room rate, even at mid-range hotels. It is often cheaper to skip the hotel breakfast and walk to a local boulangerie for a fresh croissant and coffee. However, some budget chains offer free breakfast or a very cheap add-on rate, so do the math before you decline.
6. Verify Air Conditioning
Many historic buildings in Dijon do not have air conditioning because they were built centuries ago. If you are visiting during the hot months of July or August, a cheap room on the top floor of an old building can become uncomfortably warm. Always filter for "Air Conditioning" if you are sensitive to heat.
By keeping these practical tips in mind, you can secure a stay that aligns perfectly with both your budget and your travel style. Dijon is a walkable, welcoming city, and where you sleep is simply the launchpad for enjoying the region’s incredible wine, architecture, and history. Whether you choose a modern motel on the outskirts or a cozy room overlooking a cobblestone street, you’ll find that the city’s charm far outweighs the cost of your stay.
