12 Best Cafes Near Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya

Perched on the hill of Montjuïc, the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC) offers one of the most breathtaking panoramic views of Barcelona. After spending hours wandering through its vast collections of Romanesque murals, Gothic art, and modernisme masterpieces, you will likely find yourself in need of a quality coffee break. The area surrounding the museum, stretching down toward the neighborhoods of Poble-sec, Sant Antoni, and Eixample, is a hotbed of specialty coffee culture and traditional Spanish charm.

Whether you are looking for a quick espresso to fuel your walk through the Jardins de Laribal or a leisurely brunch after visiting the Magic Fountain, the surrounding districts have something for every type of traveler. The challenge is often navigating the winding streets of Montjuïc to find the spots that prioritize both atmosphere and bean quality. This guide cuts through the noise to bring you the most reliable and inviting coffee destinations within walking distance or a short metro ride from the museum.

The following selections range from third-wave specialty roasters to family-run pastisseries that have served the neighborhood for decades. We have focused on locations that offer a genuine sense of place, ensuring you can experience the local lifestyle rather than falling into a tourist trap. While Barcelona is famous for its food, the coffee scene has evolved dramatically in recent years, moving beyond the traditional torrefacto roast to embrace lighter, fruit-forward profiles.

You do not need to trek back to the city center to find a great flat white or a perfectly textured cappuccino. In fact, some of the best baristas in the city have set up shop in the shadow of Montjuïc, attracted by the artistic energy of the area. Many of these cafes double as workspaces or social hubs, reflecting the creative spirit that emanates from the museum itself.

For the traditionalist, we have also included spots where you can enjoy a café con leche alongside a freshly baked croissant or xuixo. The contrast between the historic architecture of the museum and the modern minimalism of these coffee bars creates a unique dynamic for your visit. Taking a break at one of these locations is the perfect way to rest your feet while planning the rest of your day.

This list is curated with a focus on consistency, atmosphere, and proximity to the MNAC. We have considered the walkability from the museum’s main entrance, ensuring you won’t have to wander too far off the beaten path to find a quality cup. Whether you are a digital nomad needing Wi-Fi or a couple looking for a romantic terrace, you will find an option that suits your needs below.

From hidden garden patios to sleek Scandinavian-inspired interiors, the cafe culture around the museum is diverse. Prepare to discover the places where locals actually go to get their caffeine fix, away from the crowded La Rambla. Here are the best cafes near the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya to recharge during your cultural excursion.

Way overpriced and no service. We spent over €15 for a pastry, a bottled lemonade, and an iced latte that had no ice and wasn't made with fresh espresso. Absolute rip-off.
Aqeel Ahmed★★★★☆
Not the best selection, but honestly I'd almost give 5 stars if I had tried a coffee or food as well. Super friendly and high service from the guy working the counter
Nicola Ho★☆☆☆☆
Poor service. The staff missed our order, and we politely reminded them about it. Instead of addressing the issue professionally, the staff member appeared offended and gave us unfriendly looks, as though we had done something wrong.
S Y★★★★☆
Small cafe, gluten free croissant available. Lots of seating. Some cold pasta and rice meals, bread, hot drinks, fresh orange juice available.
Georges Younes★★★★☆
A tiny cafe in a huge hall. The cafe is a modern addition to an older room that has been renovated. The renovation has created a unique space that is a mixture of neo-classical columns and arches, an ornate ceiling, and slick white modern architecture with high-tech details. By all means have your coffee, but take the time to explore the grand hall.

What a lovely café! The place feels like an old house, with a warm and cozy atmosphere that makes you want to stay for hours. The service is great, and the coffee is excellent. I haven't tried the cakes yet, but they look absolutely delicious, I'm honestly tempted to break my sugar-free diet for them. The whole café feels almost like an art museum, with so much character and beautiful details everywhere. Definitely worth visiting if you want to enjoy a great coffee in a really special place.

The avocado-radish combo with cream cheese spread was really good—the poached egg wasn’t runny at all which was a bummer! The spice latte has a strong coffee flavour, and the iced matcha latte was just okay.
Lori D★★★★★
Cute place with great espresso, pastries and cakes!! Great service too!! Super friendly. They also have other food too, but we only had pastries and cakes. It looked good, though.
Alicia de Torres★★★★★
Lovely cute spot for coffee and impressive cakes! I’ve been here a few times and the brunch is also good. They have super interesting lattes: matcha, rose, lavender, seasonal ones and chocolate too. An exciting spot to try a different coffee or for a catch up with a friend. They have an impressive selection of cakes, all of which were tasty: I tried pistachio, dulce de leche and ricotta. One thing to note which is interesting is that they do not have decaf coffee because according to service their blend is weak anyways but overall lovely and will continue to come here!

Camelia Art Café is a great spot for a delicious breakfast, but be aware of the kitchen's opening hours. Pros: * Delicious breakfast options * Good coffee * Desserts and tarts look amazing (haven't tried them yet, but they're tempting!) Cons: * Although they open at 8:30 AM, the kitchen isn't ready to take orders until 9 AM, which can be a bit of a wait if you're an early bird.

Coffee Casa is such a lovely spot! I got the vanilla iced latte and it was absolutely delicious and perfectly made. The service was amazing, and the owner Philip was incredibly kind. We ended up having such a nice conversation, which made the whole experience feel really welcoming and personal. I also spotted their new tiramisu iced latte, and it looks amazing, so I’ll definitely be back to try that next time. Highly recommend if you’re looking for great coffee and genuinely friendly service!
Tomi★☆☆☆☆
The place is very overrated, the coffee was mediocre quality, and the barista on 29.03.2026 was very unfriendly. The place was nice however.. If you want good quality specialty coffee, don't come here. UPDATE: In my opinion, your response reflects a lack of the attitude expected in the horeca industry. Instead of showing empathy, it focuses on explaining why the customer’s opinion is not valid. Professionals usually start with a simple “sorry” — not necessarily admitting fault, but acknowledging the guest’s experience. When you have a 4.8 rating and people come from across Barcelona specifically to visit your place, expectations are naturally high. Not meeting those expectations is disappointing, regardless of the technical explanation. In horeca, you are often judged by your worst day, not your best ones — and this might be one of those moments.
Onur Tırpan★★★★★
As I was trying to leave the store after adding sugar, the Lady offered me more sweet pumps which made my drink perfectly the way I like, which is unreasonably sweet for a coffee 🤣 very cute spot. Highly recommend.
Jacob Nomafo★★★★★
Brilliant, there was a line outside when I arrived… not suprised - it’s the best coffee in El Born. I would recommend the tiramisu latte, delicious! 👏
Carolina Oliveira★★☆☆☆
Edited review: always mistrust establishments who give you free food in exchange for 5 star rating. The waitress was super friendly to give me a free gluten free banana cake to go, I even tasted a sample it was ok (maybe the sample was fresher then the give away cakes), but then the free cake was soaked the bag in oil, tasted like 1 week old cake. Not worth it. The coffee was ok but you can find a lot better less than 5 min walking distance. "Super tasty banana cake that is also gluten free! Also grabbed the cold brew, super fresh and good quality coffee." This review no longer applies.

Pamela Munt-Madill★★★★☆
When reviewing a café in a large national monument, I believe you have to consider the extreme stress and demands being placed on the staff at the café. This certainly was the case with the Oval Cafe when I was there for breakfast during a recent visit. As far as atmosphere, this café is in an absolutely stunning historic exhibition hall with all of the glamour and architectural wonder that could be hoped for. Merely sitting in the café transports you back to the time of the world fair when this building was created, and the wonder of the optimism of the era. For that reason alone, taking time to sit in this café and enjoy that atmosphere with a cup of coffee is absolutely worth it. I however, was more hungry than that so I ordered a cappuccino along with a breakfast special, including fresh orange juice, and a pastry. I was completely satisfied with the quality of the coffee and the orange juice and the pastry also were fresh and delicious. On the day I attended, the staff were faced with a rather large and difficult tourist group making progress through the line quite slow. The staff, however, continued to be efficient and polite, really going above and beyond what could've been expected. This is a wonderful place to take time to have a coffee when you're visiting this amazing monument. The coffee stacks up to the view and if the service takes a little longer, there is lots to look at while you're waiting.

Very fast and efficient, great place for a quick stop. And the location has a wow effect located inside the museum mid way stop.Paid 5 euros for the below items. Hope it helps.

Had lunch in the restaurant - very friendly staff and good food. Only took a picture of the mains (marinated chicken thighs & braised beef cheeks) which were great! The cod fritters and spinach croquettes starters were well made, and I especially enjoyed the toasted persimmon with custard dessert.
Radosław Jackowiak★★☆☆☆
Really poor coffee, staff need to practice preparation a lot. Lady who was serving didn’t knew about their breakfast menu, forgot about second drink and poured me 100ml (1/3 of cup)of not the freshiest Orange juice, completly overpriced for this quality, avoid if possible.
hongyuan wang★★★★★
Me, my mom and my dad each ordered a wholemeal croissant, and we all agreed it was the best croissant we ever had. It had beans, chia seeds and other ingredients that verified its flavors. The staff were very friendly and the restaurant was comfortable, a perfect place to rest after a long walk in the museum.

Great place made with finesse and attention to detail. Can be done only by someone who is passionate about coffee at an exceptional level. Felipe was so passionate about the place and was very warm and welcoming. Keep going! Don’t miss the single origin coffees at the entrance coffee shop!

New museum with beautiful huge collection of antigue coffee machines, coffee grinders and many more. It is definitely worth a visit. Also the staff is very nice, big thank you to both Filip and the guide miss with black hair (which name I unfortunatly didn't get), made the experience amazing.
Iana Kondakova★★★★★
I visited the Coffee Museum in Barcelona today, and it was such a wonderful surprise. Even if you’re not a coffee enthusiast, this place is absolutely worth visiting. The museum features an incredible collection of antique coffee grinders, vintage espresso machines, old cash registers, and fascinating pieces that tell the story of coffee through the centuries. The highlight for me was the enormous 1862 coffee grinder — a truly unique and impressive masterpiece. You can see how much passion and care went into creating this collection. Every exhibit has been beautifully restored, and many of them are true works of art. The atmosphere is warm, elegant, and full of history. A big thank you to the owners for preserving such an amazing collection. If you’re visiting Barcelona—or even if you live here—don’t miss this hidden gem. It’s one of those places you’ll be genuinely happy you discovered. After visiting this museum, you’ll never look at a cup of coffee the same way again. ☕❤️
Maja Horvat★★★★★
Great little place for all coffee lovers! I have never seen so many coffee grinders and espresso machines and so well preserved. When you enter the staff gives you a short orientation and presents the most historic pieces. Definitely worth the visit for a different experience in Barcelona. It was also not as crowded.

What a fantastic cafe! I love that it supports local artists, and has loads up for sale. This gives it such a beautiful, eclectic atmosphere. The staff and the food were wonderful, we managed with my VERY limited Spanish and they were patient and kind. FYI, When paying for any art, you will need cash. But for and drinks and food, card is absolutely fine!
Jonathan Alarcon★★★★☆
Pretty good overall experience. The cafe mocha was amazing and the pancakes were delicious. Service was good and the atmosphere was nice. I also loved the art and decoration of the place. Definitely a solid brunch spot and I’d come back again.
Luana Duma★★★★★
I loved it here! This is a perfect cozy cafe where to spent your Sunday mornings with a coffee and something sweet. We ordered a tropical smoothie, a lotus-Biscoff latte, and for food: Lotus cheesecake and crunch. They were sweet, but VERY delicious. I closed my eyes to enjoy every bite of the crunch cake. The coffee had a great taste too! The atmosphere is so pleasant, with a lot of tasteful art. I was lucky to grab the only spot outside as I smoke and it was convenient. I went to a lot of cafes in Barcelona, but this one was my favorite so far. As for the service, yes, you have to ask for the menu yourself and we ordered at the bar directly as to not wait, but it wasn’t an issue for us. The wait for the order was not high.
YAFEA ALYAFEI★★★★★
What a wonderful café for brunch! It's conveniently located right in the heart of the university, just a short 5-minute stroll from my hotel. The acai bowl was absolutely delightful, and I must say, the service was impressively quick and top-notch. Plus, the prices were quite reasonable. I had the pleasure of visiting with a local friend, which made the experience even more enjoyable!
The Duvals★★★★★
This is the perfect little cafe. Absolutely fell in love with it while we were in Barcelona. There is no wi-fi which perfect for spending time together or reading one of the many books on their shelf. The coffee was amazing, the kind where the first sip touches your soul. The ladies speak relatively good enough English to help when ordering and are able to make recommendations. Highly recommended getting your coffee fix here.

Chaitanya Makkena★☆☆☆☆
Absolutely unacceptable. I was served a Minute Maid peach drink that was already expired — the bottle clearly said “30.09.25”, and I bought it on 04.10.25. That means the product was past its expiry date. When I pointed this out to the staff, instead of apologizing, he was rude and dismissive. This is not just unprofessional, it’s dangerous and a complete violation of food safety standards. For a restaurant in such a prestigious location like La Terrassa del MNAC, this level of negligence and arrogance is shocking. Serving expired drinks and then treating customers poorly is absolutely disgraceful. Avoid this place at all costs.
Sean Wakelin★★★★★
We were in awe of the view from the museum on a sunny day and turned around to find a bar up here. We ended up sitting on the steps for 2 hours listening to the man busking and enjoying the view. We were drinking pints of Estrella for €6 per, for half pints they were €3.80. On a nice day I highly recommend.
Peter Grostøl★☆☆☆☆
This looks like a tourist trap and they is also what it is. There are so many good and cheap places to eat in Barcelona so go somewhere else or settle for a cold drink. Their homemade juice is actually good and there is nothing wrong with the view.
Mr_Experience★★★★★
What can I say one of the best views in Barcelona. The fountain below, the views, vibes, mountains in the distance, how can you ask for more. I'll be back!
Aysu Dalkılıç★☆☆☆☆
Unfortunately, we had a very disappointing experience here. One of the staff members was extremely rude and refused to speak English. When we asked something in English, he replied aggressively saying, “This is my country, you have to speak Spanish.” This kind of behavior is completely unacceptable, especially in such a highly touristic area. Even after we chose not to engage anymore, he continued speaking loudly in Spanish in a confrontational way. The view may be nice, but there’s no point visiting a place where you’re treated with such disrespect. Definitely not recommended.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ My favorite morning routine! I loved coming here in the morning, even when tired, because I knew they serve the best coffee around. The croissants were also super delicious! The staff is always in a great mood and speaks fluent English, which is a huge plus. Highly recommended!

Nice cute little place with an extraordinary barista - client experience and a really well crafted and served Ethiopian coffee. ☕️ Obviously, a play to be enjoyed by coffee lovers.
Ali Massadi★★★★☆
Great coffee one type of roast the Colombia- fruity and acid but still so sweet. Limited seats available at the place, but the atmosphere is cozy and cool. Desserts looked good, BUT 😂 Took a peanut butter cookie was too heavy and sticky like having a whole peanut butter spoon in your mouth which affected the coffee taste for sure.
Felesteen★★★★★
Great experience at this coffee shop. Fabian, the barista, was incredibly kind and friendly. I wasn’t sure what to order, but he suggested a dirty chai and it was absolutely delicious. I also tried the chocolate chip banana bread, which was just as good. Highly recommend stopping by!

Artisa Barcelona is an absolute gem! 🌟 We had such a delightful experience there. The quality of their products is top-notch, and every bite was a joy. My favorite is the empanadas. The service was impeccable – the staff was friendly and attentive. Plus, the value for money is outstanding! This is highly recommendable and we will definitely come back.

After dinner my friend and I went to this place for capuccino. It was served with a mini cookie and was so good. We enjoyed the capuccino so much we went back the following morning. This time I decided to try the Moka drink ...capuccino + chocolate + cream. Too bad we only have a short time to spend in Barcelona otherwise we would try their pastries and ice cream. The price was also very reasonable.

Lovely mostly gluten free little cafe. Waitress told us only the croissants are not gluten free. I had some very nice pancakes and bananas and a cappuccino and pricing was very reasonable.

I was nervous about this one- in a high tourist area.. on a square. We took a chance and glad we did! This place was perfect- the drag queens, the great service, the ambiance. The food was excellent and left us with about a 300€ bill for 5 people. Highly recommend the lamb.

The café has a lovely atmosphere and is a nice place to sit and relax. The staff member who served us mentioned that it was his first day, so we do understand that not everything may have gone perfectly. Unfortunately, the food was a bit disappointing. The crème brûlée was overburnt—the sugar topping wasn’t just dark, but had some white, burnt spots as well. It’s a shame because the custard underneath was delicious. The churros were also inconsistent. Some parts were soft and soggy, while one small section un the downside was burnt. The coffee itself tasted good. We ordered iced coffee but were served two cups of hot coffee along with a glass of ice. This may simply have been a language barrier or a misunderstanding. He mentioned, that he dont know whats on the card. Overall, the café has a lot of potential thanks to its beautiful ambiance, and I hope these small issues improve over time.

Mateo, the Barrister, told me about the history of this charming 'hole in the wall' coffee shop. So interesting. First hand made, gas powered espresso coffee machine in Spain. Its still there, although not at work any more! 😁

What a charming stop while exploring the gothic quarter. I had this place marked and glad we had a chance to stop and enjoy a cafe solo and creme Catalan in the same place so many others before us discussed philosophy, politics, music poetry. It was you could feel the history and tradition as we enjoyed a pause in our sightseeing in the gothic quarter. Cafe Solo also excellent. Very rich and full-bodied.

Mesón del Café is one of those timeless Barcelona cafés that instantly feels like home. The atmosphere is cozy and nostalgic, the kind of place where you sit down “just for a minute” and end up staying much longer. The churros with dark chocolate are the star of the show. Light, crisp, and freshly made—perfect for dipping into the rich, velvety chocolate that has just the right balance of sweetness and depth. It’s comfort in the purest form. A delightful Barcelona classic. Don’t miss the churros.

Mesón del Café is a timeless spot in the heart of Barcelona. The coffee is rich and perfectly prepared, and the cozy old-world charm makes you want to linger. The staff are welcoming and add to the authentic, local feel. A perfect place to pause, enjoy a great cup, and soak in a piece of the city’s history.

I like the fact they’re actually chill about laptop usage. Come order a coffee and a nice bit of pizza, connect to the WiFi and relax. Too many cafes in Spain are very hostile to laptop users so it’s refreshing to see. Just don’t overstay your welcome when it’s super busy and not order anything

Tips for Enjoying Cafes Near MNAC

Navigating the coffee scene in Barcelona requires a slight understanding of local customs and timing, especially when you are visiting a major tourist attraction like the MNAC. The way you order, the time you arrive, and how long you stay can drastically alter your experience. To ensure you blend in seamlessly with the locals and get the best possible service, it is helpful to know a few insider tips regarding the cafe culture in the Montjuïc area.

1. Know the difference between "Café" and "Café de Especialidad."
When you order a "café" in a traditional Spanish bar, you will typically receive a small, dark espresso made with torrefacto (sugar-roasted) beans, which can be quite bitter. If you are looking for the lighter, fruitier flavors of a third-wave brew, look specifically for signs that say "Café de Especialidad" or "Specialty Coffee." These shops roast their beans in-house or source them from local Barcelona roasters like Right Side or Nomad.

2. Timing is everything for brunch.
Many of the trendy cafes near Poble-sec and Sant Antoni operate on a late-morning schedule. Most do not open before 9:00 AM, which is standard for Barcelona. If you are visiting the museum right when it opens at 10:00 AM, consider grabbing coffee first, or wait until the afternoon lull. The peak rush for brunch is usually between 12:00 PM and 1:30 PM, so aim for a mid-morning or late afternoon visit to secure a table without a wait.

3. Utilize the "Menu del Dia" for lunch.
While you might just be stopping for a coffee, many of the cafes listed also offer excellent food menus. If you are hungry after traversing the vast halls of the MNAC, look for the "Menú del Día" (Menu of the Day). This is a fixed-price lunch menu that usually includes a starter, main course, dessert, and a drink. It is the most economical and authentic way to eat like a local, often costing significantly less than ordering à la carte.

4. Bring a reusable cup for takeaway.
Barcelona is a city that is increasingly conscious of sustainability. If you plan to grab a coffee to go and enjoy it while walking through the Plaça Espanya or the gardens of Montjuïc, bringing a reusable cup is a great idea. Some specialty shops offer a small discount for bringing your own vessel, and it helps reduce the waste associated with the high volume of tourists passing through the area.

5. Don’t expect table service at specialty bars.
In traditional Spanish terraces, you sit down and a waiter comes to you. However, in the newer specialty coffee shops and brunch spots near the museum, the model is often different. You will usually need to order and pay at the counter first, and then they will bring the food and drinks to your table. If you sit down and wait for a menu, you might be waiting a long time.

The area surrounding the Museu Nacional is a vibrant mix of old-world Barcelona and modern innovation. Taking the time to step away from the museum’s esplanade and wander down into the grid streets of Sant Antoni or the theater district of Poble-sec will reward you with a much richer cultural experience. The cafes here are not just pit stops; they are community hubs where you can observe the daily rhythm of the city.

As you sip your coffee, you will likely find yourself surrounded by a mix of artists, students, and locals going about their day. This is the authentic Barcelona that exists just beyond the tourist facade of Montjuïc. So, take a deep breath, enjoy the aroma, and let the caffeine carry you through the rest of your artistic journey in this beautiful Catalan capital.
