12 Best Cafes Near Basílica de Santa Maria del Mar

Sitting just a few streets back from the bustling waterfront, the area surrounding the Basílica de Santa Maria del Mar is a labyrinth of narrow medieval alleyways, sun-dappled plazas, and artisan workshops. Known as the Born district, this neighborhood is widely considered one of the most atmospheric and historically rich pockets of Barcelona.

While the basilica itself draws visitors from around the globe to admire its stunning Catalan Gothic architecture, the streets around it offer a distinct local rhythm. Here, the scent of freshly roasted coffee beans often mingles with the salty breeze drifting in from the nearby Port Vell.

Finding the right spot to rest your feet after exploring the church or the nearby Picasso Museum is essential to experiencing the neighborhood like a local. However, the density of options can be overwhelming, ranging from tourist traps to hidden gems tucked away in unmarked corners.

This guide focuses on quality, atmosphere, and authenticity, ensuring you spend your time savoring excellent brews rather than wandering aimlessly. We have curated a list of spaces that offer not just great coffee, but also a true sense of place.

Whether you are looking for a quick espresso at the bar, a quiet corner to read, or a sunny terrace to people-watch, the Born has something to suit your mood. These establishments range from specialty roasters to traditional Spanish cafeterías that have stood the test of time.

Below, you will find a carefully selected list of the best cafes near Basílica de Santa Maria del Mar, each offering a unique window into the local café culture. These are the places where the baristas know the regulars by name and the quality of the bean is taken seriously.

Coffee Casa is such a lovely spot! I got the vanilla iced latte and it was absolutely delicious and perfectly made. The service was amazing, and the owner Philip was incredibly kind. We ended up having such a nice conversation, which made the whole experience feel really welcoming and personal. I also spotted their new tiramisu iced latte, and it looks amazing, so I’ll definitely be back to try that next time. Highly recommend if you’re looking for great coffee and genuinely friendly service!

The place is very overrated, the coffee was mediocre quality, and the barista on 29.03.2026 was very unfriendly. The place was nice however.. If you want good quality specialty coffee, don't come here. UPDATE: In my opinion, your response reflects a lack of the attitude expected in the horeca industry. Instead of showing empathy, it focuses on explaining why the customer’s opinion is not valid. Professionals usually start with a simple “sorry” — not necessarily admitting fault, but acknowledging the guest’s experience. When you have a 4.8 rating and people come from across Barcelona specifically to visit your place, expectations are naturally high. Not meeting those expectations is disappointing, regardless of the technical explanation. In horeca, you are often judged by your worst day, not your best ones — and this might be one of those moments.

As I was trying to leave the store after adding sugar, the Lady offered me more sweet pumps which made my drink perfectly the way I like, which is unreasonably sweet for a coffee 🤣 very cute spot. Highly recommend.

Brilliant, there was a line outside when I arrived… not suprised - it’s the best coffee in El Born. I would recommend the tiramisu latte, delicious! 👏

Edited review: always mistrust establishments who give you free food in exchange for 5 star rating. The waitress was super friendly to give me a free gluten free banana cake to go, I even tasted a sample it was ok (maybe the sample was fresher then the give away cakes), but then the free cake was soaked the bag in oil, tasted like 1 week old cake. Not worth it. The coffee was ok but you can find a lot better less than 5 min walking distance. "Super tasty banana cake that is also gluten free! Also grabbed the cold brew, super fresh and good quality coffee." This review no longer applies.

Lovely food, and nice staff. The vibe outside was cozy, though I think the vibe of sitting inside would make a difference for my rating, since you sit close to the road outside. We would recommend booking a table if you plan to come. We came in on a Sunday for brunch, and everything was fully booked, but still got to sit outside. Even though they were really busy, the staff was nice and reassuring. Be aware that it is a 10% fee for sitting outside. They have good food, okay coffee (esthetically i was really pretty though it didn't taste of that much), and really sweet staff. So we would recommend going to this place if you are nearby.
Louisa Ess★★★★★
Such a cute little café! I loved the handmade designs on the drinks—they were so pretty and made everything feel extra special. The breakfast was really filling too. The staff were lovely, and the whole place had a really relaxed, welcoming vibe. Definitely worth a visit, and I’ll be coming back!

You just have to visit this Brunch spot if your visiting Barcelona. Everything about this place was perfect..Despite not having a reservation we were warmly welcomed with the previso that we only had one hour which was not a problem for us and we soon realised why we only had one hour. International Women's Day was being celebrated and the staff were very kind in looking after my wife with an appropriately decorated cappuccino. Service was as good as I have come across and the food was top drawer. Really tasty and so well presented, I just wish I lived a little closer as I would definitely be a regular here..5 stars well justified.

The food was super yummy and decorative. The drinks were delicious, we all got smoothies which came out so cute and decorative. My friend ordered a latte and it was the cutest thing ever. However, my friend is vegan and ordered the vegan burger which ended up not being vegan at all. She was not happy with the vegan food options and for that reason I knocked off a star but we loved our food.

This was a beautiful place to enjoy with family and on top of the food was delicious. My coffee was so cute. The pope is in town, Jessica made me a cute specialty latte. Places you highly recommend, especially if you're coming in with friends or your girlfriends..

This church was stunning and not crowded at all. You can go in for free during certain hours but I was there early and wanted to see the view from the top. Forgot how much I made was it was pretty inexpensive and worth it. The view from the top was wonderful. You could even see Sagrada Família. Highly recommend.
Phong Nguyen Thanh★★★★★
The interior of Basílica de Santa Maria del Mar is beautiful, but honestly not particularly impressive compared with some of Barcelona’s other churches. The real highlight for me was climbing up to the rooftop. It’s a bit tiring, but the panoramic views stretching across the city make the effort worthwhile.
E Scott Parks★★★★★
Basílica de Santa Maria del Mar carries a very different energy than the grand, ornate churches you might expect in a city like Barcelona. This is Catalan Gothic at its most restrained and most powerful. The first thing that hits is the verticality. Those tall, clean columns rise almost effortlessly, creating a wide, open interior that feels unified rather than segmented. There’s very little visual clutter. The space breathes. Light from the stained glass filters in softly, giving just enough color without overwhelming the stone. Built in the 14th century by the people of the Ribera district, it has a kind of working-class pride baked into it. The same port laborers who carried stones for its construction are still carved into the doors, a quiet reminder of who this place was really for. Climb up, if it’s open. The rooftop views stretch across the dense patchwork of the old city toward the harbor, and suddenly the basilica feels connected to everything around it, not just set apart from it. And then there’s the small detail that sticks: a simple sign reading “Auxilios Espirituales” with a button beneath it. A centuries-old building, and somewhere inside, a reminder that people still come here asking for help you can’t exactly photograph.
Shameem Aqsa Manadath★★★★★
A truly breathtaking place that feels both powerful and peaceful at the same time. The moment you step inside, the vast open space, soaring columns, and soft light through the stained glass create an atmosphere that’s deeply calming. Unlike some other grand churches, there’s a simplicity here that makes it even more special—nothing feels excessive, yet everything feels perfectly balanced. You can sense the history in every stone, especially knowing it was built by the people of the city. Located in the heart of El Born, it’s not just a monument—it’s an experience. Whether you’re into architecture, history, or just looking for a quiet moment, this place leaves a lasting impression.
Patrick Clarke★★★★★
I visited on a Wednesday. 8€ for entry. Was pretty quiet, especially when compared to the Barcelona Cathedral. I appreciated being able to access the roof. There’s no signage that indicates the door in the right back gives you entry to the stairs to the roof and you have to give it a good push. The stone stairs are narrow and windy, but the climb is so worth it.

A nice specialty coffee stop in El Born. I tried their Tucán from Colombia, a natural Castillo from Huila rated 89 SCA points, with mango, banana liqueur and marzipan notes. I had it as a flat white. The mango was there but quite subtle for me, with a nice acidity that the milk softened really well without completely hiding the fruity character of the coffee. Overall, very enjoyable and well balanced. I also really liked the way the coffee was served. You get a small tasting card with all the information about the beans, process and expected flavour profile. It’s a small detail, but it makes the experience more interesting and gives you something to compare with what you actually taste in the cup. The place itself was calm and relaxed, with quite a few people working. The only point I would improve is the welcome. The staff were quite neutral, not unfriendly at all, but not particularly warm either. It was a relatively quick stop for us, but definitely a good one. Good coffee, a proper specialty approach and a place worth trying in Barcelona.
Violina Dimitrova★☆☆☆☆
It was not clear where we were supposed to wait and they were rude straight from the beginning. They didnt even let us choose in peace what we wanted to drink or eat and were in so much rush. It was not clear why we have to order, let our drinks sit and wait while they get a table. The table for freed and we tried sitting and they told us rudely not to sit because we have to wait. Its fine to wait but it was never clear what they want us to do. Starting from the girl at the counter to every single one that served us, they were so rude. The low reviews are not surprise. The drinks were okay but you can never enjoy after such service.
Pamela Munt-Madill★★★★★
My coffee experiences in Barcelona up to this point had been very mixed between traditional espresso bars, and Third Wave coffee venues. Hidden coffee roasters sat at the far end of the Third Wave experience with an extremely contemporary atmosphere and a selection of single origin coffees available to try or purchase. Upon entering the café, we were very confused about the seating protocol. Although we had already ordered our coffees and paid for them, we were not permitted to find a seat until our coffee had actually been prepared and was ready to be served to us. Personally, I find that confusion in a café, quite offputting however, some of that could've been the language barrier which I was experiencing. I had ordered a pour over coffee made on their automated pour over machine. This is the first time I've had a pour over made in such a manner, and the result was an excellent and sweet dripped coffee. I chose a Rwandan bean which had been roasted to a medium profile. Although, a much lighter roast and less intense cup of coffee than I usually choose, this was excellently prepared. My companion ordered a latte which was sufficiently intense and aromatic. At the front of the café, they had a traditional claw machine filled with bags of whole bean coffee. For one euro you could take your chance and try to grab a bag. I was unsuccessful, but I thought the concept was amazing. Certainly if you near this café in the El Born neighborhood, you will be treated to a very traditional third wave coffee experience. It is worth a visit for the interesting mechanization and variety of options for single origin beans.
Julian Mora★★★★★
Hidden Coffee is an excellent spot with very good coffee, ideal if you’re in the area. The taste is great, and they provide clear info about the origin of their specialty beans, which adds value. The pastry options work well as a complement. Some people use the space in a co‑working style, and the staff is friendly. Recommended.
SM Mizanur Rahman★★★★★
Way better than Starbucks, let’s start with that. Did not need a metric ton of sugar to make a good tasting coffee, which is what I look for these days. A slightly bitter but very smooth taste of my latte surprised and amazed me. The artwork was the cherry on top. It’s a little small/cozy but there was WiFi and a big table if you need to work.

A genuinely lovely little spot for coffee, something sweet, or a small sandwich — veggie and non-veggie options both. You can see the care the staff put into the craft, with great products matched by even better service. Warm, friendly, welcoming people turning out coffees for a steady stream of travelers and locals alike. Stop in for a cortado, a Vichy Catalan, and a slice of their homemade almond cake.

Their churros were the highlight! They have very little seatings, but it’s a cozy little spot. Coffees were amazing! Services were great!
Yaniv Ohana★★★★★
One of the most talked about places in Barcelona when it comes to coffee, it justifies itself and its status. In such a touristy place you would expect it to lose its identity, but when you see locals coming to buy their coffee there, you realize that they are probably in a different league. And when I say buy their coffee, I am of course talking about the fresh coffee beans that are on sale in a variety of flavors and from around the world. This small place can't accommodate many people, but there is real magic here. There are all the machines there, coffee is delicious, the smell of coffee is there, and overall, reasonable service. Highly recommended.
William ORourke★★★★★
Tostaderos Bon Mercat is one of those Barcelona coffee shops you’re genuinely happy to stumble into. The smell of freshly roasted nuts and coffee is incredible, and everything they sell tastes just as good as it smells. Their selection of coffee is outstanding—super fresh, high quality, and priced fairly. The staff is warm, patient, and clearly knows their products, always ready with great recommendations. Whether you’re stocking up on snacks, grabbing gifts, or just exploring local shops, this place is a must-stop. A true neighborhood gem in Barcelona.

Counter and ordering was busy and chaotic but that's how you know it's a good stop! Delicious coffee and one of the best pastries I had all trip. Some spots to sit and enjoy the morning as well. My cousin was ecstatic to find a place serving extra large coffees.

Flat white was fine - there was almost no acidity and the flavour was deeply concentrated. The milk was a bit overwhipped and overheated. Not the best coffee in Barcelona but still good. Very borderline 5 stars

Hello everyone, unfortunately not recommended. I like the Spanish serenity. But unfortunately I have to say that this is not possible. 3 counsellors out of 6 counsellors serve a woman who does not know what to drink. It was 12:14 noon. A client was taken care of by three people. I was the next turn. A number of people build up after her and after 5 minutes I left the store with nothing. Too bad, but that's not possible. Too bad that the review was not fully read and only half understood.

my partner and i came in for our morning coffee and to buy a few bags of specialty roasted coffee beans. we ended up meeting the owner, who was incredibly kind, patient, and very passionate about coffee! he didn't hesitate to answer our questions and he was happy to share explanations about what made each roast special. you can clearly see how much thought and care went into every aspect of this shop! we would 100% come back again

I just accidentally found this restaurant/coffee shop; it's a perfect place to visit in Barcelona because it's only beside the Sta. Maria Church. They have tables outside so you can experience seeing the locals or being in the plaza. They have a 2nd floor also, which has a good look at the view outside. They accept reservations. The staff are friendly, and they can speak English also, so no worries for other international travellers. The food is great; it’s 100% delicious. The coffee taste is well-balanced between bitterness and aroma. They offer all the courses from appetisers to main courses to dessert. They have two types of menu languages you can choose from, which are English and Spanish. You can enjoy drinking wine. Well, I recommend this place to everyone.

On your walk to the seafront from the metro station you will pass many restaurants along the way. Lots have waiters waving menus at you. Fine if you want a full meal (and if you get lucky - such restaurants serving one-time tourist customers simply don’t try very hard). But if it’s a snack hold on until you get to the last corner and stop here. Perfectly nice outdoor seating area and good quality filled rolls, cookies, and coffee.

Nice place to stop for a coffee or grab a bite. They have a lot of food options from sandwiches to focaccias, salads to lasagnas and of course sweets. The sitting area inside is quite limited but they have lots of tables on the terrace with a beautiful sea view. The staff is friendly.

Superbly located, slap bang in front of the basilica. The iced coffee was very good. I had banana iced coffee, which was a definite first, but surprisingly tasty. The real stars are the cinnamon rolls. So soft and delicious.

Reviewing brunch spots is somewhat of a new challenge, especially in a city like Barcelona, where there are hundreds of them and many feel like variations of the same concept. The real secret to a good brunch review lies in the subtleties: textures, presentation, and balance of flavors,as well as, of course, the courtesy of the staff. Nonna’s brunch is, so far, the best I’ve had in Barcelona. The Hollandaise sauce was impeccably velvety, and the eggs Benedict split and bled in a way that felt almost miraculous. The toppings are more than generous. The bread had a distinctly homemade crunch, far removed from anything artificial. The mushroom and egg toast came with a tartar-style sauce that elevated the entire dish (and, quite frankly, my day). The coffee also deserves a mention. I was genuinely surprised by how good the oat milk cappuccino was, and let’s be honest, oat milk coffee doesn’t always deliver. As promised, a note on the staff: consistently kind, and more importantly, genuinely cheerful, even when the place was full. I’ll definitely be coming back regularly for that oat milk cappuccino.

We found this place because it was near our hotel and what a lovely find. The food was delicious and plentiful. They have food coffee, mimosas and other fresh beverages for breakfast/brunch. We had a large group of 6 and they were able to accommodate. The service was quick, friendly and the price was well worth everything we had. We had French toast, eggs Benedict, pancakes and the chicken sandwich - we couldn’t find any pics so it’s the only one I’m posting. The wait staff is lovely. Don’t miss going here if you’re in the area - definitely worth the trip.

Sooooo yummy. The cafe is super cute inside and outside. The staff were all very friendly and nice to chat with. I had an iced latte and really enjoyed it. The turkish eggs were great. Tips for Enjoying Cafes Near the Basilica

Navigating the café scene in a historic district like El Born requires a slight adjustment to the typical tourist routine. The rhythm here is distinct; locals often stand at the bar for a quick "café solo" rather than sitting for hours, and pricing often reflects where you choose to sit. Understanding a few local customs will not only save you money but will also deepen your appreciation for the neighborhood’s social fabric.

1. Stand at the Bar for a Local Price
In many traditional Spanish cafeterías, the price of your coffee changes depending on whether you sit at a table (mesa) or stand at the bar (barra). If you are simply looking for a quick caffeine fix and a moment to observe the staff at work, order at the bar. You will often pay significantly less than those seated on the terrace.

2. Ask for the "Café de la Casa"
While specialty coffee shops offer complex single-origin filters, traditional spots often have a house blend or a specific roast they are proud of. Asking for the "café de la casa" or a "bombón" (espresso with condensed milk) can introduce you to flavors that are distinct to the region and the establishment.

3. Time Your Visit Around Local Hours
The streets around the basilica are quietest in the early morning, right when the bakeries and roasters open. If you want a peaceful experience and the freshest pastries, aim for a visit between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM. Avoid the 1:00 PM rush when the lunch crowd floods the bars for a pre-meal vermouth and coffee.

4. Look Beyond the Main Square
The Plaça de Santa Maria directly in front of the basilica is beautiful, but the cafes with direct views often charge a premium for the location. To find the spots where locals actually linger, venture one or two streets back, such as the Carrer del Rec or the side streets off Passeig del Born. You will find better quality and lower prices just a stone’s throw away.

5. Pair Coffee with a Local Pastry
To experience the full flavor of the district, pair your drink with a regional baked good. Look for a "xuixo" (a deep-fried, sugar-coated pastry filled with crema catalana) or a simple "ensaimada." Many of the best cafes source their pastries from local bakeries daily, making the combination a quintessential Barcelona breakfast.

The area surrounding the Basílica de Santa Maria del Mar is not just a place to pass through; it is a place to sit and absorb. The history embedded in the stone walls of the Born district is best appreciated from a small table with a warm cup in hand, watching the interplay between residents and travelers.

Whether you choose a sleek specialty roaster pushing the boundaries of modern coffee or a century-old bar where the espresso machine hisses with history, you are participating in a vital part of Barcelona’s daily ritual. Take your time, put away the map for a moment, and simply enjoy the distinct flavor of this remarkable neighborhood.
