Santander is a city that rewards a slower pace. The capital of Cantabria wraps around one of the most beautiful bays in northern Spain, where the salt air mixes with the aroma of freshly ground coffee and warm pastries. While the beaches and the Magdalena Palace draw the crowds, it is often the city’s café culture that leaves the most lasting impression on visitors.
The local coffee scene is not about rushing. It is about standing at a polished wooden bar with a café con leche in one hand and a sobao pasiego in the other. Whether you are seeking a quiet corner to work, a sun-drenched terrace to people-watch, or a historic institution that has served the city for over a century, Santander offers a diverse range of spaces to sit and stay awhile.
Because the city is compact, you can easily plan your day around coffee stops. You might start in the bustling center near the markets, wander toward the elegant streets of the ensanche, or end your afternoon near the ferries in Puertochico. Each neighborhood brings a different rhythm and a different style of brewing.
For the specialty coffee enthusiast, Santander has evolved significantly in recent years. Modern roasters and minimalist spaces now sit comfortably alongside traditional Spanish cafeterias. This blend of old and new means you can taste a meticulously sourced single-origin pour-over in the morning and a classic cortado with churros by noon.
We have spent time exploring the city’s backstreets, talking to baristas, and sampling the local pastries to compile a guide that serves both travelers and locals. The focus is on quality, atmosphere, and authenticity. You will find places that honor the heritage of Cantabria and others that push the boundaries of modern coffee.
Whether you are visiting on a rainy Atlantic day or enjoying the rare winter sun, these spaces provide a warm refuge. From the texture of the milk to the crunch of a local pastry, these details matter. The following selection represents the very best of what this coastal city has to offer.
Here are the top spots to enjoy a memorable coffee experience in the Cantabrian capital.

Enjoyed an aperitif, a beer, some tasty olives and a couple of fairly good empanadas here. Excellent location, friendly service and a good selection of food and drink given there’s only one member of staff. Highly recommend.

Absolutely amazing!! Food was delicious with lots of options. We had the small pancakes and a tortilla. Coffee was also very good and we loved the mugs. Owner was also incredibly nice and friendly and speaks english. Definitely will return.

I really like the cups here. They serve Etiopía coffee here, and to be honest, it’s quite rare to find here, in Spain. This is a huge like from me.
What I have concern about is water, it tasted like a tap water, and I’m always scared of the quality of tap water.
The crepes were not as I imagined them. They weren’t flat, and powdered sugar made them worse. I was hungry, and I ate them all, but I won’t recommend it to you.

Creative fusion cooking that mostly hits the mark
Gómez Fusión is a refreshing and ambitious addition to Santander's restaurant scene. The menu blends traditional Cantabrian ingredients with international influences in a way that feels creative without being gimmicky. Most dishes are well executed and genuinely surprising in the best possible way, the kind of food that makes you want to try everything on the menu. The presentation is careful and considered without feeling overly precious. The interior is stylish and comfortable with a relaxed atmosphere that works equally well for a casual dinner or a special occasion. Service is attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. Prices are on the higher side but justified by the quality and creativity on offer. A great option if you want something a bit different from the traditional Cantabrian dining experience.

Stopped for a light lunch whilst in Santander. Friendly, helpful staff and great service.
A ham roll, chicken kebab and a cake along with two coffees all for €11. Really good quality and absolutely unbelievable value.
Highly recommended.
Kasandra Poague★★★★★
Best place to have breakfast in Santander! Cheap and summer yummy. Do not forget to ask for a suizo a la plancha.
I just suggest that the menu clarifys that breakfast comes with coffee and if you want additional juice is $1+. The first day that we went there we asked for juice and the waitress didn't bring coffee. We were only told coffee is not replaced by the juice the second time we went.
Jeremy Gillespie★★★★★
Had a superb lunch at Gomez. We were treated so well by Aldolfo and his colleagues for our 8h lunch!!
Food was great and the wine was particularly good with a fantastic Rose for €12 a bottle!!
Would recommend going there and experiencing the Acorn-fed Iberian ham

Oh that’s a lovely place and working&studying friendly which means you can work from with your laptop. I went to there on Tuesday, it was quiet and relax to work.
Also, I had enparadas which taste was so good, and italian scrambled egg woth mushroom, food&drink were tasteful and joyful.
Stuff were so cute. I had both wine & cortada which were again tasteful.
8/10 place 💖🙏🏼 I woul love to try their hamburger also.

Would definitely recommend for a brunch in the area!

The burgers here are absolutely delicious! The Emmy Burger with caramelized onions is incredible and was definitely the highlight of our meal.
We also tried one of the sandwiches, but it was quite average compared to the burgers and not nearly as impressive.
If you’re visiting, definitely order a burger. The Emmy Burger is a must-try! 🍔

I chose this cafe due to it's proximity near the bus and train station. And that it seemed pretty busy with locals, which is usually a good sign.
The staff were extremely welcoming and attended to my needs immediately.
The menu had an English section, which is fortunate due to my pigeon Spanish.
I ordered a spanish beer, which came immediately and with a smile, and was cold and extremely refreshing.
I ordered the el español sandwhich which came after 8 minutes of ordering. It was a cheese bacon, tuna, omelette asparugus, lettuce tomato toasted sandwich. And was probably the best and most delicious sandwhich I have ever tasted. And was very filling. The bill came to around 10 Euro for the sandwich and beer. Which as a brit is superb value for money. 10/10
Lee-Anne Curtis-Cox★★★★★
Excellent location right opposite the train station. We had the menu of the day which included 3 courses, all meals were well prepared and of good portion size. Free bottle of wine made it a great option! Food was served in excellent time, restaurant is clean and staff friendly and efficient!

Very very good. Cocido Montanas is like beans with chorizo and black pudding nutritious and very tasty, generous potions. For mains I had the pork ribs with salsa of red and green peppers and chips. Tender and tasty.
Very nice and honest hearty meal. Some Spanish friends recommended it to me and I'm so glad I went. Highly recommended. I finished it off with a café can leche and a helado. But there are many desert options.
The menu del dia also includes wine bread and water.

we arrived at 6:20 PM. you don’t get seated by the staffs so we sat on our own. google maps says the place closes at 12AM and food closes at 8PM so he refused to serve us….. there was more than enough time to order, eat the food and clear the table.
it honestly just felt like the worker didn’t want to serve us so we left. very unprofessional place

Their 🍞 breads and sandwiches are freshly made. The cappuccino is just right, not too strong. The place is clean and a good place to meet up with friends, although staff doesn't speak English or with little English, they were able to take our orders correctly. 😉

What a great find - we had an excellent lunch on the pretty terrace / steps outside the restaurant. The waitress was extremely friendly and helpful and the food was soooo good. A truly wonderful family experience. We were a mix of adults and teenagers, enjoying soft drinks and dishes like octopus and chicken wings—all fresh and prepared with genuine professionalism. During our vacation in Santander, I wanted to find a typical, neighborhood place with homemade food, made with that touch of love that makes everything taste so much better. And that's exactly what you find here, where the food is absolutely delicious and the friendliness of the waiter and owners is delightful.
And the prices are very reasonable. We returned to Madrid hoping to come back sometime soon...

Drawn by the renowned fame of its octopus, among other specialties, this modest bar, almost hidden on Ruiz Zorrilla Street, holds great treasures. My friend Juan and I ventured inside to try their famous octopus 🐙 that everyone is talking about. Once seated in their cozy dining room, we were attended to by their professional manager and Chef Berto, who recommended their octopus and other specialties. Following his advice, we opted for some delicious mussels in such a flavorful sauce that we finished it off with a spoon, mussel shells and all! 😋 Next, we moved on to some extraordinary garlic prawns, so exquisite that we once again found ourselves mopping up the garlic with bread. Satisfied and almost full from these starters, as the portions were not only delicious but also generous! 😝 Then came the icing on the cake: their famous octopus. Again, a good-sized portion, beautifully presented and perfectly cooked, accompanied by potatoes and a good paprika, undoubtedly from La Vera, which made this octopus more than on par with any you could find in the best restaurants in Galicia. We were obliged to have an ice cream to aid digestion. I also want to highlight the excellent service, combined with the friendly and professional approach of Berto and his two sons, who know how to do things right and satisfy their customers. 👌 The end result was an exquisite culinary experience to remember and never forget, along with very reasonable prices. For all these reasons, I can only recommend this place to all food lovers and write this well-deserved review. 👍

Very lovely Cafeteria. Stayed in Santander for a few days and have been in to eat every day. Delicious food, big portions in good price. Main, desserts and coffee. Lovely churros for breakfast. Place full of people and nice atmosphere.
And a massive thank you and well done to Gloria, lovely lady working in there for a nice and very welcoming service. Even tho of language barriers she always managed to give us a good food recommendations, small talks and when it was busy she managed to find us a table. Hard working, very smiley and lovely lady. Highly recommend cafe. The food was excellent. The drinks and views were excellent. The waiter was very kind and helpful. We even got free chips with our drinks. The view of the cathedral is excellent. They have a toilet too. If you're visiting the Cathedral, then this should be the place you try too.

Food was okay but it took over 40 mins for my sandwich to arrive. The waitress was very apologetic however we received our drinks too early and we had drank them all before our food arrived. My mam ordered a cheesecake and that took about 20 mins to come! I learned my lesson not to go to bars/cafes in really touristy areas because the service is often slow and food not of a great standard!

Slowest service I've ever experienced. Asked 4 times for a menu before finding them inside myself. Same for the bill. Waiters are lazy. Food is poor

Tips for Enjoying the Café Culture in Santander
To truly appreciate the coffee scene in Santander, it helps to understand a few local customs and practical details. The way locals drink coffee differs slightly from the rest of Europe, and knowing when to go can drastically change your experience.
Understand the local coffee lexicon. In Santander, coffee is traditionally strong and served in small quantities. A café solo is an espresso, a cortado is an espresso with a splash of milk, and a café con leche is half coffee and half hot milk. If you want a larger, weaker coffee, ask for an americano or a café largo.
Pair your drink with local pastries. The region of Cantabria is famous for its baked goods. You should not leave without trying a sobao pasiego, a dense, buttery sponge cake, or a quesada pasiega, which is similar to a cheesecake. Many of the best cafés bake these in-house or source them from trusted local bakeries.
Embrace the "barra" (bar) culture. You will notice that prices are often different depending on where you sit. Drinking your coffee standing at the bar is usually cheaper than sitting at a table. It is also the most authentic way to interact with the barista and observe the daily life of the city.
Mind the local timing. Spaniards generally eat late. Breakfast is often light and can happen as late as 10:00 or 11:00 AM, while the merienda (afternoon snack) takes place around 5:30 PM. Cafés will be busiest during these windows. If you want a quiet experience, visit just after the morning rush or before the lunch service begins.
Look beyond the tourist strip. While the terraces along the Paseo Pereda offer beautiful views of the bay, they often charge a premium for location. For better quality and value, walk a few blocks inland to the streets surrounding the Mercado de la Esperanza or the Plaza de Cañadío. Here, you will find the spots that locals frequent daily.
Bring cash for smaller spots. While most modern specialty cafés in Santander accept credit cards, some of the older, traditional cafeterias still operate on a cash-only basis, especially for small purchases like a single coffee. It is wise to keep a €10 or €20 note in your pocket.
Take your time. The pace of life in Cantabria is unhurried. Waiters will not rush you to pay the bill, and it is considered rude to rush a conversation over coffee. Allow yourself to sit, read a newspaper, or simply watch the world go by. This is the essence of the local lifestyle.
The beauty of Santander’s café scene lies in its contrast. You can sip a cutting-edge natural processed coffee in a bright, minimalist space, then walk two blocks and enter a wood-paneled institution that has barely changed since the 1950s. This duality keeps the city interesting for coffee lovers.
As you explore the city, let your curiosity guide you. The best moments are often found in the unplanned stops—a tiny bakery with a single espresso machine, or a corner bar where the sound of the milk steamer mingles with the chatter of neighbors. In Santander, coffee is rarely just caffeine; it is an invitation to pause and belong.
