12 Best Cafes in Nerja

Nerja’s allure extends far beyond the panoramic views of the Balcón de Europa and the hidden coves that punctuate its coastline. For many visitors and locals alike, the rhythm of daily life here is set to the gentle clink of ceramic cups and the low hum of conversation drifting from sun-dappled terraces. The town has cultivated a coffee culture that balances traditional Andalusian charm with the demands of the modern remote worker and discerning traveler.

Finding the perfect spot to enjoy a morning espresso or a leisurely afternoon café con leche can define your experience of this coastal gem. The best establishments offer more than just caffeine; they provide a sensory snapshot of local life, often pairing robust brews with freshly baked pastries or stunning Mediterranean views. It is a landscape where a family-run institution might sit just a stone’s throw from a sleek specialty roaster.

Because the quality of coffee and atmosphere varies significantly from the bustling tourist centers to the quieter residential streets, a curated guide is essential. You do not want to waste a precious morning on a mediocre cup when a world-class brew is waiting just around the corner. Whether you are seeking a quiet corner to read, a vibrant space to socialize, or the perfect Instagram-worthy iced latte, Nerja has a venue tailored to your mood.

We have spent countless hours traversing the winding, white-washed streets of the old town and the breezy promenades near the beach to bring you the definitive list. Our selections are based on bean quality, barista expertise, atmosphere, consistency, and the overall value offered to the customer. We prioritize spots that locals frequent, as that is often the truest indicator of a café’s longevity and quality.

In this guide, we focus on venues that excel in the art of coffee making while offering a distinct sense of place. You will find a mix of historic institutions that have served the community for decades and new-wave coffee shops pushing the boundaries of specialty beans and alternative milks. Each entry has been evaluated to ensure it meets a high standard of hospitality and flavor.

Whether you are fueling up before a hike in the nearby Sierra de Almijara or winding down after a swim at Playa Burriana, the right café is waiting to welcome you. The diversity of options ensures that no matter your preference for dark roasts, single origins, or creamy cappuccinos, you are covered.

Below is our curated selection of the twelve best cafes currently operating in Nerja, designed to help you navigate the local scene like a seasoned resident rather than a first-time tourist.

Las Cuatro Esquinas translates to “The Four Corners,” and it feels like all four corners of a rugged neighborhood dive bar have been gathered into one room. I stopped in for a cortado and was surprised by the high Google rating. The coffee was intensely bitter. Perhaps it was torrefacto, the roasting style that became popular during Spain’s lean postwar years to stretch lower-quality beans and make them last longer. Whatever the reason, this felt far more like a beer bar than a coffee destination. I eventually asked for extra milk in an effort to negotiate a ceasefire with the coffee. The floors had visible litter during my visit, giving the place a certain “lived-in” character. The restroom continued the theme. There was no hand soap, no paper towels, and the toilet paper appeared to be serving double duty. The overflowing trash bin and overall presentation reinforced the no-frills dive bar atmosphere. The bartender also seemed determined not to let friendliness interfere with authenticity. The flavor definitely wakes you up, not the caffeine. Perhaps this is exactly what many locals appreciate about the place. If you’re looking for a straightforward neighborhood bar where polish is considered unnecessary, you’ll likely feel right at home, especially with a beer in hand. If you’re searching for a memorable cortado, however, I would recommend exploring one of the other three corners of Nerja.

Absolutely OG churros and perfect hot chocolate with it. To my surprise the sandwich was also delicious. Crisp and tasty.
Daniele Alducci★★★★★
I very rerely write reviews, but I have to say this is the very best bar of the entire trip and hands down one of the best I have ever been. Amazing vibe, friendly staff and delicious food, all at a very convenient price. If I were to live here I would come every single day!
Onlythetruth★★☆☆☆
The hot chocolate is not entirely liquid which is great to dip in with the churros. The toast was good and the ice tea natural and refreshing. Great experience overall, except for the fact that it’s pretty hot inside. When we ordered something without specifying the size or quantity they took the most expensive option without asking us. My friend took an orange juice which in the menu costed 2.8€, with no other options of size. When we received the bill, they made her pay 3.3€ for an orange juice of a bigger size that wasn’t even on the menu! We were a group of 6 but they didn’t let us pay separately which was very inconvenient

I absolutely LOVE this place! It’s the perfect combination of healthy and delicious. I usually go for the vegetarian muffin and the three salads. The staff is lovely, the atmosphere is warm, and the prices are more than fair. I would definitely eat here every day.
Matt Cooper★★★★★
Lovely place. Delicious homemade healthy food with a varied brunch and lunch menu. Can even get a cup of decent tea with cold milk! Owners clearly care about what they do and make and were also very very friendly. Just had a nice vibe and setting and clearly gets regular customers. Highly recommended.
Paul Middleton★★★★★
We stumbled across the Good Stuff Café walking down from the bus station, and stopped in for breakfast. The café is Irish-owned, and they have Barry's Tea and a very UK/Ireland-inspired menu. The food was very tasty, with really generous portions, and I have to mention the young English girl who was serving tables. The café was quite busy, and she never stopped. Food was making its way to customers very quickly, and was always delivered with a smile. Crucially, as soon as a table was vacated, it was cleared and cleaned, which isn't always the case on a busy café. The young lady worked very hard and is a credit to the café. Given the good food and great service, it is well worth a visit.

Always a favourite and always such a warm, homely vibe. Thank you so much for a wonderful start to the day with that yummy chia seed pudding with fruits and all the extras. Absolutely gorgeous 😍🥰 Thank you! More love and success to the family x
Gunay Khalilzade★★★★★
I had breakfast here today. I’ll come back to the breakfast in a moment, but first I want to mention how incredibly friendly and welcoming the staff were. They made me feel so comfortable that I could easily have spent the whole day there. As for the food, both the savory and sweet dishes are homemade and absolutely delicious. Everything was fresh. The apple pie was outstanding!! Without a doubt the best apple pie I’ve ever had. Highly recommended!

This is a great small and cute cafe. We went there for breakfast and were lucky to get 4 seats inside. Best iced matcha latte - also the summer edition with strawberry 😋 and the croissants (pistaccio, nutella, whatever) are a dream and come freshly baked.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The most beautiful cafe! I went every morning of my holiday as the coffee was perfect🩷 Such a warm, cosy and cute vibe! So much love is put into every cup of coffee served, the flowers on the cup is such a nice touch (VERY instagramable!!!🤍) Can’t wait to go back to Nerja to go back to this beautiful cafe

Nice coffee and warm croissants and pain au chocolats. All served with a smile by the lovely owner. Cute little cafe. Would definitely visit again.

Me and my partner were staying in Frigiliana for holiday, we discovered this little unique place and first had cocktails there of an evening. They were brilliant cocktails and then we decided to go back for brunch another day and the food was brilliant as well. It all tasted fresh and they gave generous portions. I had a milkshake as well and it was delicious. Not to mention as well it is very well priced but it is cash only so keep that in mind. 🙂

Loved this place! The atmosphere was so warm and welcoming, with beautiful Arabic and Andalusian vibes. It really felt like being at home, especially in the courtyard surrounded by plants. Such a peaceful and charming spot. I would definitely come back! 🌿✨
Avi Shek★★★★★
The restaurant is a hidden gem in Nerja. They have savory crêpes that are, I must say, more savory and wonderful. I tried breakfast with salmon and cucumbers—beautiful. The interior was created with Arabic mosaics, surrounded by many trees, flowers, and an orange tree. The service was wonderful as well. They also have a place a floor above; we chose to sit on the terrace.
BH (Bryan)★★★★★
When I arrived asked to bring my bicycle inside, which was no go.. but then the owner, an all-round feel good guy Pedro came to say hi.. great vibe - worth the visit .. 😀 I'll be back .. coffee was great and the cakes are to die for .. lovely little garden there
Conrad Clancy★★★☆☆
Lovely interior and welcoming to come in. Menu was extensive with selection. We had just the breakfast/ brunch options which were fresh and fine but nothing special for the price you are asked to pay here. Quality is fine, taste was fine, but price on some items bears no relation to value to my mind. Juice menu was good and the drink was very nice but again a bit pricey. Service was not the fastest at 1pm on a Tuesday. Would probably be willing to give it another chance on balance

Steve's Food Adventures★★★★☆
We bobbed in for a quick beer and enjoyed a paella tapas which was suprisingly good. Despite the size restraint of the tapas bowls we both had a couple of mussels a clam and some razor clam in a bed of delicious savoury rice. The seating is outdoor on a bustling street which gives it a great atmosphere.

I hardly write negative reviews, but I was so appalled here that I cannot stay silent. We came here for a churros breakfast (we saw some people sitting on the terrace with coffee and churros). The waiter sort of snapped at us what we wanted to have. We said “churros”, but that was not possible since it was finished and that we could order churros on the opposite side as take away (two minutes before we saw another waiter walking from that place into the cafeteria with a plate of churros). So we asked we could buy the churros there and eat it on this terrace plus ordering coffee and orange juice. Was not possible, so we ordered orange juice only and the waiter walked away. After 15 minutes he snapped whether we still wanted orange juice 🤷‍♀️, so we said yes (don’t ask me why) and had to wait another 15 minutes. I don’t know who peed in the waiter’s coffee that morning to get this grumpy , but what is the guy doing in the hospitality business. The terrace and inside the cafeteria was not even loaded with people. At least the orange juice was fresh. 🍊

Great selection of homemade Spanish food. Tapas - 1/2 portions or full meals. Thoroughly enjoyed it - great prices , friendly staff - will eat there again !

Cafe, bar, restaurant? Well, all in one... And definitely my favorite place in Nerja. Large portions at very reasonable prices, great tapas, very nice and helpful owners. Breakfast is amazing!

We came here several times for breakfast during our stay in Nerja – and it was perfect every single time. The food is fresh, generous, and beautifully prepared. The avocado and salmon toast was especially delicious, and the coffee and fresh juice made the mornings even better. The location is lovely, just a short walk from the sea, with a relaxed atmosphere and very friendly service. A place you’ll happily return to again and again – highly recommended!

Very good breakfast, good coffee. The prices are good... I recommend them! Also the staff is very friendly.

An unforgettable lunch at Kronox Café! I had the pleasure of enjoying a quick lunch at Kronox Café in Nerja, and I couldn’t have chosen a better spot! I ordered the tortilla de gambas with a fresh, delicious salad—and wow, it was truly the best tortilla I’ve ever had. The flavors were just perfect! What impressed me even more was the excellent service. I was in a bit of a hurry, and the team was incredibly efficient and kind, making sure I was served quickly without compromising on quality. If you're in Nerja and looking for a tasty, satisfying meal with fantastic service, Kronox Café is a must-visit. I’ll definitely be back!
Laura Gartside★★★★☆
The best place to watch the sunset in Nerja, such a suntrap and usually someone playing music in the backgroud. Pricey abit higher here but good for 1 glass of wine in the sun!
Denise★★★★★
Stopped here for lunch and had the most delicious chicken kabab salad. Lots of chicken. They also gave me a small appetizer of sorts with green olives, crackers, and a couple slices of cheese. Good service as well. Wide variety in their menu. I will eat here again.

Amazing food. The toast with jamon, avocado and tomato was absolutely great. The service was nice and quick. The prices are very reasonable. Highly recommend.
Bianca Gurzun★★★★★
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Amazing café. The Iberian ham is absolutely exquisite — thinly sliced, full of flavor, and honestly one of the best I’ve ever had. The coffee deserves special mention too: rich, perfectly prepared, and wonderfully aromatic. The atmosphere is cozy, the service is fast and friendly, and you can truly notice the quality of the products from the very first bite. A perfect spot for breakfast or a relaxing coffee break. Definitely a place worth coming back to again and again.
Terry Brown★★★★★
This Cafe is amazing and the staff are excellent and friendly. The food and drinks are great. Highly recommend.
Jonathan Katz★★★★★
Visited October 24. EAT HERE. The three-star rating is undeserved and WAY TOO LOW. Lovely place, pleasant, civilized, comfortably busy, not mobbed like other area bars and restaurants. We were greeted promptly, served drinks and a free appetizer. After a bit we ordered tapas and these were brought promptly, fresh, tasty, tastefully served and ample. Ventresca (tuna belly) was excellent and the salad was fresh and crisp. We could not finish the potato salad—there was too much of it. The waitstaff were pleasant and friendly. Would definitely return.
Claire Churchouse★★★★★
Fantastic fresh, tasty food and great service. So good that we have been twice in a few days.

Had a great experience here. Staff are working very hard. It can get very busy since it is in middle of square and has many menu items. Staff = Busy and doing what they can when rude tourists ignore them. Great job. Food = Best truffle burger! Bun was buttery and perfect smash burger. Chips were on point. Came back later after 22:00 for cheese cake, it was excellent. Some of these reviews miss the context as well as do not understand the hours they are open are not normal for this part of the world. Keep up the good work!
Alexandru Vladar★★☆☆☆
Awful experience due to terrible service. I asked for a non-alcoholic beer twice, but was served a regular alcoholic one. When we pointed this out, the waitress just nodded and did absolutely nothing to fix it. The food was good, but my request for extra jalapeños on my burger was completely ignored despite being confirmed. To top it off, the restaurant wasn't very clean. Very disappointing.
J S★★★☆☆
Albi Urban Café – Nerja The truffle burger was excellent—very flavorful, rich, and honestly so filling I could barely finish it. From a food standpoint, it was really enjoyable and clearly well made. Unfortunately, the service was very disappointing. I waited around 20 minutes before being acknowledged, ended up changing tables just to be noticed, and even after asking for a menu it took several more minutes to receive one. The staff member I interacted with seemed disengaged and unhelpful, which took away from the overall experience. That said, the quality of the food makes this place worth trying, and I’d still recommend it—just be aware that the service may be slow or inattentive.
Habiba Amer★★★★★
Definitely worth trying. We got the urban nachos, sweet avocado salad and the G.O.A.T burger. So yumm so filling definitely recommend.

Lovely little cafe in the snicket between Calle Pintada and post office street. Good coffee and food in a nice courtyard and a very friendly owner.
Melissa B★★★★★
Small cute place away from a busy street. If you have trouble finding it, you just have to go through a small hallway from the street. I enjoyed the short break we had here, the staff is very friendly, the vibe is “visiting family on their back yard”, very chill. We had cafe con leche which was average but satisfying. We also ordered crepes and a toast which we also enjoyed. I recommend this place for a break after long walking, for a quick bite and some energy. 🌸 The only downside, since it looks like a family owned business, they might be missing some options from the menu. And also, the prices are very affordable.

Has become my regular place for breakfast. The coffee has a depth and richness hard to find elsewhere. The bread used has quality. Wine is well selected and very good. But prices are consistent with other cafes. Staff are brilliant. Anthony in the morning, Carlos all day and Dani in the evening. They will have you covered. Be interesting to see how they handle the colder, wetter months as space inside is limited. Would love it if they opened an hour earlier in the morning but absolutely no complaints.

First visit here for lunch. What a lovely place. We sat outside and the table was immediately cleaned by the service staff who welcomed us. He took our order which was promptly delivered. It was delicious and the crispy chicken burger was served in pink and red brioche buns which amused us. The onion rings were also scrummy. The whole experience was a pleasure. I can highly recommend this cafe. Thank you for a lovely lunch

Tips for Enjoying Cafes in Nerja

To make the most of your coffee journey in this beautiful town, it helps to understand the local customs and peak times. The café culture here is deeply ingrained in the social fabric, and adapting to the local rhythm will significantly enhance your experience. By following a few practical guidelines, you can ensure you get the best seat, the best service, and the best price during your visit.

  1. Embrace the Local Timing: Coffee service peaks at different times of the day. Mornings usually see a rush of locals grabbing a quick café solo and a tostada before work, while late afternoons are reserved for leisurely socializing. If you want a quiet table, aim for the lull between 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM.
  2. Know Your Coffee Lingo: While most baristas in Nerja speak English, ordering in Spanish is appreciated. A café con leche is similar to a latte, a café solo is an espresso, and a cortado is an espresso cut with a small amount of milk. If you want iced coffee, ask for café con hielo.
  3. Check for Terrace Pricing: In many Spanish cafes, the price of your coffee can change depending on where you sit. It is often cheaper to stand at the bar (en barra) than to sit at a table on the terrace (en terraza). If you are on a budget, check the menu or ask about the price difference before sitting down.
  4. Pair Coffee with Local Pastries: A coffee is rarely consumed alone. Look for piononos, a sweet local treat named after a Pope, or simply order a media tostada (half toast) with crushed tomato and olive oil. The combination of local bread and a robust espresso is a quintessential Andalusian breakfast.
  5. Cash is Still King: While most modern cafes accept credit cards, many smaller, family-run establishments in the old town have a minimum spend for card transactions or prefer cash. It is always wise to carry a few euros in coins to avoid any awkwardness when paying for a single coffee.
  6. Respect the Siesta: While tourist-facing cafes near the Balcón de Europa may stay open all day, many quality local spots in residential areas close between 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM for the siesta. Always check the opening hours online or plan your afternoon coffee run for after 5:00 PM when many terraces reopen for the evening crowd.

The true magic of Nerja’s café scene lies in its ability to make you feel at home, whether you are visiting for a weekend or a season. It is about the unhurried pace of life, the warmth of the Mediterranean sun on your skin, and the simple pleasure of a perfectly pulled shot of espresso. These spaces serve as community living rooms, where conversations flow as freely as the coffee.

As you explore the town, let this list be your starting point rather than your limit. Nerja is full of hidden gems tucked away in alleys and plazas that are waiting to be discovered. Take the time to sit, savor, and watch the world go by—that is, after all, the essence of the Spanish café experience.
