After a morning spent absorbing masterpieces by Titian, Caravaggio, and Rubens, the sensory overload of the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza often leaves visitors with a very specific craving. It is not just about finding a quick bite; it is about extending the pleasure of the day with a quality pastry, a crusty loaf, or a perfectly brewed cup of coffee.
The area surrounding the Paseo del Prado is not just the artistic heart of Madrid; it is also a haven for traditional and modern baking. While many tourists flock to generic chain cafes, the true magic lies in the hidden panaderías and pastry shops that have been serving locals for generations.
This guide focuses on quality over proximity, ensuring you do not waste your appetite on mediocre tourist traps. We have curated a list that balances traditional Spanish techniques with modern artisan trends, all within a reasonable walking distance of the museum.
From flaky croissants that rival those in Paris to traditional Spanish torrijas and ensaimadas, the options are diverse. Whether you are looking for a savory empanada to fuel a walk to Retiro Park or a delicate sweet to enjoy on a bench, this list has you covered.
We have considered the atmosphere, the mastery of the bakers, and the authenticity of the ingredients. The goal is to help you navigate the neighborhood like a local, avoiding the overpriced and underwhelming options that often plague high-tourism zones.
Many of these establishments are small, family-run businesses where the craft has been passed down through generations. Others are new-wave bakeries focusing on slow fermentation and organic flours, reflecting the evolving culinary landscape of the Spanish capital.
To ensure you have the best experience, we have compiled the definitive list of the best bakeries near the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum. Use this guide to turn a simple snack break into a cultural exploration of Madrid’s rich baking heritage.

It looks cute. However, the experience was not good. The waiters seem stressed even though the place was half empty. I requested a table for one and I was ignored while they accommodated people that arrived after (they take no reservations and the whole lower floor was empty).
The food was ok but forgettable. Very lame flat white, eggs and bacon were like in any ordinary cafeteria.

Made it before it got really busy. Food was out very quickly. The Andalusian breakfast with Iberian ham on whole wheat with grated tomato was incredibly delicious. The natural breakfast of yogurt with fruits and seeds was so tasty. Cappuccino was piled high with foamy milk. Loved it.

Very affordable price with good breakfast, simple and makes you full! It’s a hidden gem in the city center if you want to have some
traditional breakfast without paying 20 euros

Maybe I came on a bad day, but the food was terrible. I ordered the Desayuno Americano and it was barely edible. The “bacon” was just heated up slices of ham, so salty it was inedible for me. The scrambled eggs were just ok. The toast was tough and over toasted. The coffee was burnt and again barely drinkable. The juice was fine. The bacon/ham was actually barely cooked at first and I had to send it back. (Attached picture is of the bacon AFTER they refried it, still looks terrible). No apology. Overall very disappointing. Do not recommend at all.

Santo has quietly become part of my routine. The bread is easily the best you’ll find in town. I already have my favorites (the cardamom bun and the canelé), but honestly, the best thing you can do is let yourself try something new each time. Walk in, breathe in the smell of fresh bread, pick something you’ve never had before, and enjoy it slowly. The staff are lovely and there’s a real warmth here, not just from the ovens. And the pastries… truly to die for.

This Panadería is a Hidden Gem in Madrid. Employees were truly kind and had better words that I have encountered for understanding their food. Quality is so invaluable. Texture was Crispy and buttery but not greasy and lean.

I’ve been here 3 times and every time the service has been absolutely lovely. I appreciate that they take their time with each customer to answer questions, give recommendations, and make comfortable conversation. Besides the amazing workers, their pastries and bread are top tier. I’m writing this after eating the Za’atar, Feta, and Sesame roll and I’m stunned. The coquito with the coconut and coffee combination also pleasantly surprised me. I don’t think you can go wrong with anything here.

An excellent bakery near Plaza del Opera on a quiet street. Chef Trabanco is a true craftsman. His creations are beautiful and expertly prepared. So good with the perfect balance of flavors and texture. And he's a super nice guy! The bakery itself is a nice quiet spot away from the tourist spots (and the tourists).

Inside Santa Eulalia gives you the feeling like being in “little Paris”, with cozy old-world decor, books, plants, and exposed brick walls. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and you can really feel the care behind the place.
The pastries and breads are clearly top quality, made with great ingredients and a lot of attention to detail.
I had an excellent cortado with a DELICIOUS hazelnuts bun, the cakes and the breads looked incredible.
Service was very friendly and English speaking. The space is quite spacious and with WiFi so you can enjoy the coffee and the pastries and also work there.

Excellent place to enjoy a sweet and also they have brunch with eggs!
The sweets are just incredible! (Especially pain au chocolates with pistachio and chocolate)
Also coffee was good and eggs were really good portion!
Totally recommended!
Dhoha Rashed Alshalawi★★★★☆
Loved the sweets, but not the coffee. The cappuccino didn’t taste like a proper cappuccino—it was more like instant coffee and lacked foam.
The coffee bar could be more organized and cleaner, especially since the main seating area is right in front of it.
On the positive side, the staff are sweet, kind, and provide good service. The decoration and overall vibe of the place are authentic, and the location is great.

A pastry lovers delight. I was pretty sure I wanted to get only their famous chocolate napolitana and it did not disappoint.. decadent chocolate cake (ish) inside a buttery airy puff pastry. Heaven in a bite. Not too sweet and perfect for some one like me who doesnot have a sweet tooth.
They have huge lines but they move pretty fast. So dont give up. Also there is no chance of them being sold out since they keep bringing out freshly baked goods. Good place to even bring back baked gifts for friends and family. Centrally located at Puerta del Sol. Highly recommend this spot.

Visiting La Mallorquina is stepping into a living piece of Madrid’s culinary history.
Located in the heart of Puerta del Sol, this iconic pastry shop delivers not only exceptional quality but also tradition and charm that have endured for generations. Their pastries are simply outstanding, fresh, delicate, and crafted with precision. The napolitanas, ensaimadas, and classic Spanish pastries are rich in flavor, perfectly balanced, and absolutely unforgettable.
The aroma alone invites you in, and every bite confirms why this place has remained a beloved institution for so long. Whether paired with a coffee or enjoyed on their own, their creations reflect true mastery of traditional Spanish pastry.
The service is efficient despite the constant flow of visitors, a testament to its popularity and reputation.
La Mallorquina is more than a pastry shop, it is part of Madrid’s identity.
A must-visit for anyone who appreciates tradition, authenticity, and exceptional sweets.

西班牙人擠爆的麵包店,點了一個可頌,點餐要直接跟店員喊
The Pastelería La Mallorquina - Sol is one of the most famous traditional pastry shops in Madrid, located directly at the Puerta del Sol, one of the city’s busiest and most central squares.
Founded in 1894, La Mallorquina has become an iconic stop for both locals and visitors seeking classic Spanish pastries in a historic setting. It is especially known for its elegant ground-floor pastry counter and its upstairs café, where customers can sit and enjoy views over the bustling Puerta del Sol.
Signature items include napolitanas de chocolate (chocolate-filled pastries), palmeras, milhojas, and a variety of traditional cakes and baked goods. The pastries are typically rich, buttery, and made in the classic Madrid confectionery style.
Today, La Mallorquina remains one of Madrid’s most recognizable pastry institutions, valued for its central location, long history, and consistent quality, making it a popular stop for a quick breakfast, afternoon coffee, or sweet break while exploring the city center.

Loved La Mallorquina 🎀 Such a cute bakery with a cozy vibe. We had breakfast here and everything was amazing. The croissants were huge, soft, and slightly sweet, and the Napolitana (especially the cream and chocolate one) was a highlight. Definitely one of my favorite spots in Madrid!

Absolutely amazing experience! The food was beyond incredible — everything was fresh, delicious, and beautifully prepared. The service and staff were exceptional, so friendly, attentive, and welcoming.
The place itself was spotless, beautifully maintained, and had such a lovely atmosphere. You can really tell they care about every little detail, from the cleanliness to the quality of the food and the overall experience.
Definitely one of the best places I’ve been to, and I would highly recommend it! I’ll definitely be coming back. ❤️

This little bakery was right around from where we stayed in Madrid. The workers were so incredibly nice and helpful and the pastries were amazing. We went multiple times and tried the strawberry pistachio cake, the carrot cake, canneles, and some other treats. It all was incredible— the carrot cake was the best I have ever had. You can see them making the baked goods fresh when you walk in. One of the best pastries we have had.
Tresha Torreon★★★★★
Lovely café with great pastries! I also really appreciated how accommodating the staff were. I was dining solo and they made me feel completely comfortable, no awkwardness at all. Even though it was quite busy, they still found a way to seat me and made the experience really pleasant. I’ll definitely be back! 😊
Lina★★★★★
Cute and small pastelería, but the little cakes are absolutely amazing. Each one is packed with flavor and clearly made with attention to detail. Despite the size of the place, the quality really stands out.
A perfect spot if you’re looking for something sweet and special. Definitely worth a visit, and I will come back again.
Manuel Gonzalez Vazquez★★★★☆
I usually have coffee with milk and it’s really good. Both the coffee AND the milk are typically not well-taken care of but this place makes them really good. Form me the real deal is when I can have the coffee without sugar. And this is the case here, a a mellow and tasty "café con leche"
The pastries are also high quality, good looking and tasty.
The place is small and quaint and usually packed because there aren’t many tables. The prices are aligned with a gourmet style restaurant. They’re on the high side but I’d say they’re worth the quality offered.
The service is okay. I had a minor misunderstanding that I think they could have handled more elegantly but it wasn’t a big deal.

What an absolute gem in Madrid! La Magdalena de Proust is the perfect spot for anyone who loves truly artisanal baked goods. Their famous magdalenas (made with 100% organic ingredients) are out of this world – fluffy, flavorful, and not overly sweet, just pure perfection. I tried the chocolate-covered ones and the classic ones... couldn't stop at one!
The bread is incredible too – crusty on the outside, soft and airy inside, clearly made with care in their own obrador. We also had some pastries and a slice of homemade tart, everything tasted fresh, natural, and high-quality. They use local, bio, and proximity products, which makes it feel wholesome and special.
The atmosphere in the cafetería is cozy and welcoming (loved the one in Chamberí/Regueros area), staff is super friendly and attentive, even when it's busy. Great for breakfast, a coffee break, or grabbing takeaway treats to enjoy later.
If you're in Madrid and appreciate real artisan panadería-pastelería without the fuss, this place is a must-visit. Highly recommend – we'll definitely be back! 🥐🍰✨ #MadridEats #OrganicBakery

La Magdalena de Proust is a truly special place for coffee and brunch. Everything feels fresh, carefully prepared, and of excellent quality. The ingredients are clearly very fresh, and the products are unique and full of character, especially the pastries and sweets, which were outstanding. The shop also has a wonderful selection if you want to buy something to take away. Beautiful atmosphere, great coffee, and very kind service. Definitely a place worth visiting.

I ordered a tiramisu, a matcha latte, and a detox cold-pressed juice to take away. Everything was lovely, and the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. Great food, excellent service, and a genuinely pleasant experience.

Great cozy cafe with nice pastries.
I had the chocolate tart. Tasted good. The base was well baked and solid, not soggy. The black coffee, Americano was also fine.
The coffee counter is seperate from the desserts/bakery items area. I believe it's two cafes working together? Since the coffee cup had "Cafe Bou" written on it.
Price wise, it's similar to Paul, a French bakery and their tartlette also costs the same. (Around 4 euros). The total for both the coffee and pastry was 6 euros which I think is okay.
The staff cashier lady also has a pleasant aura. And they use an automatic money machine where you have to put in your cash/card and get change from it. Interesting stuff I've only seen in Spain.

Very good bakery with a variety of bread. The service picking up bread was good as I didn’t eat there. The bread was very good and the doughnuts were enjoyed by the kids.

A great place for coffee and a pastry. The service is excellent, as are the pastries!
We had cafe con Leche, a palma and a postre con fruta. The palma was like a baked toasty bread that made us think if cotton candy were a pastry this is what it would be. The little fruit tart was superb and the coffee was excellent. One of the girls spoke excellent English and made ordering much easier than my bad Spanish was doing for us.
The antique mirrors are gorgeous too.

This bakery is a true gem. It makes you feel like you’ve discovered a special local treasure rather than just another tourist attraction. The atmosphere is authentic, welcoming, and full of character, and the quality of the baked goods speaks for itself. A must-visit for anyone looking to experience the genuine charm of the area.
YB★★★★☆
Excellent pastries in a charming little shop. Their almond crossiant is splendid, flaky with sugar crusted crunchy bits filled with a rich oozing marzipan that isn’t too overwhelming
Adi★★★☆☆
I recently visited La Duquesita and tried the chocolate dessert and the turrón dessert. Both were made with high-quality ingredients—the creams were light, well-balanced, and not overly rich, which made them easy to enjoy. That said, the turrón dessert could have featured a stronger turrón flavour, and the chocolate dessert would have benefited from more filling, as it became too repetitive towards the end.
While the desserts themselves were excellent (5★ for food quality), the service significantly detracted from the experience (2★). Despite available seating, we weren’t attended to promptly, and the ordering process felt rushed.
Later, when we wanted to try some chocolate pralines, it was nearly impossible to get a waiter’s attention. At one point, I approached a staff member directly and was dismissed despite her not being occupied, and communication appeared limited when engaging with non-Spanish-speaking customers- a lack of attentiveness toward tourists or international visitors.
Overall, while the desserts are high quality, the service does not match the price point. I’d recommend taking your order to go—the interior is charming, but the experience of staying doesn’t justify it.

Great pastry shop, everything is delicious and has a really good price. Except the personnel is not so nice, they avoid interacting with you as much as possible even though you have to order directly with them and never say thanks or greets customers. Such a lovely place. The girl working there was truly exceptional — incredibly warm, attentive, and genuinely sweet. I know almost every celiac bakery is going to have a review saying they have the best cinnamon rolls, but there’s not a cinnamon roll that could be better than the one from Holy Grain. Even the ones I’ve tried in Copenhagen, the birthplace of cinnamon rolls, can only rank as 2nd after the ones from Holy Grain. The cream cheese on top is perfect not tasting sugary or buttery, really just ✨perfect✨. If it adds any value, this is my first time ever writing a review because it’s just THAT good. If you want to experience the gluten-free heaven you know where to go and what to try!
Simon Cook★★★★★
Have passed here a few times and today I was tempted in.
My dad is coeliac and I will definitely bring him here if only for the service. After ordering a cinnamon roll in my awful Spanish, I was given 2 with one being “in regalo”.
A brilliant first visit!
Richard Römer★★★★★
It’s a really good backery with all gluten free products made from flour out of rice and book wheat. The bread was really good and is a very good alternative for people that want to eat bread, but can’t or doesn’t want to eat gluten.
Today we came again to get something sweet for a coffee break. We had a cinnamon roll and a donut with chocolate and nuts. Both things were so yummy and delicious. The cinnamon roll was sweet and the cinnamon flavor was very good. The donut was very fluffy and had a great taste. You might taste a little difference but in a good way. You won’t miss the gluten.

BEST PLACE IN MADRID TO BUY BREAD. Simply that. Plus empanadas, embutidos from León and Galicia, some selected cheeses, muffins, canned food. It really deserves a visit and buying an hogaza de trigo de 1 kg, you can buy it sliced then freeze it and you will have great bread with olive oil every morning. I recommend together with salt D'Estrenc.

Got the Tarta de Santiago, which was really good but also had an unexpected lemon-y flavor to it. It also wasn’t as dense as I thought it would be, and seemed to lack a strong almond flavor, but overall it was really good and would get again!
Disclaimer: I added my own raspberries to this, it doesn’t not come with lol

I got a Calamari sandwich from another place but I knew that wasn't going to be as satisfying for me because I am not a huge calamari guy so I saw a place with pastries in their glass counters. This place was called Museo del Pan Gallego. Looking for a savory snack I saw they had the Spanish Empanadas. The one I ordered was the Tuna but they also had egg, meat and a couple other options. The only interesting thing was there was no lights on lol. I took my order to go and enjoyed it in front of the Royal Palace.

The place is okay. The products although don’t look fresh at all but they taste good. I got the brownies as recommended from the reviews but it was so stiff, more like a hard cookie. The palmier and the Tarta de Santiago are both delicious. The best part: you walk in and order anything without asking a single question. The Gran Vía location is the original and has the most seating — always managed to find a table.

I’ve been trying gluten free products long time. This place is an absolute must. What a shame the customer service is so deficient. Could be an amazing place! Unfortunately they don’t know how to explain and respond to curious celiac people.
Tips for Enjoying Bakeries Near the Museum
To truly maximize your culinary detour, there are a few unwritten rules and local customs you should be aware of. Understanding the rhythm of a Spanish bakery will help you get the freshest products and the best service. Here are some essential tips to keep in mind before you set out on your tasting adventure.
Time Your Visit Right: Spanish bakeries operate on a different schedule than many other countries. The best selection is usually available early in the morning, around 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM, when the first batches of bread and pastries come out of the oven. Note that many traditional bakeries close for a siesta break in the afternoon, typically from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM, reopening for the evening rush.
Know Your Meal Times: If you are looking for savory pastries or empanadas, be aware that lunch in Spain is late, usually around 2:00 PM. Bakeries will stock more savory items closer to this time. In the morning, the focus is almost exclusively on sweet pastries and breakfast breads, often served with café con leche.
Ask What is Fresh: Do not just point at the first thing you see. Ask the staff, "¿Qué está recién hecho?" (What has just been made?). They will always appreciate the interest and will point you toward the item that is still warm from the oven. This is the best way to ensure you are tasting the pastry at its peak texture.
Look for the Wood-Fired Ovens: Some of the oldest bakeries in the area still use traditional wood-fired ovens. Bread baked in these ovens has a distinct, slightly smoky flavor and a crust that is impossible to replicate in electric ovens. If you see a sign for "horno de leña," prioritize that establishment.
Carry Cash for Small Purchases: While many modern bakeries in Madrid now accept credit cards, some of the older, more traditional family-run shops have a minimum spend for card transactions. To avoid missing out on a famous pastry just because you lack change, keep a few euros in coins or small bills with you.
The beauty of visiting a bakery near the museum is that it offers a moment of calm and authenticity away from the queues and audio guides. It is a chance to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Madrileños going about their daily routines, ordering their usual loaves and pastries with practiced ease.
As you finish your coffee and the last crumbs of your pastry, you will find yourself re-energized not just by the sugar, but by the atmosphere. These bakeries are living history, offering a taste of Madrid that is just as memorable as the art hanging on the walls just a few blocks away.
